Auzweke! Bafwethe.
Bujy Bikwa has been in the industry and he continues to make sure that he owns the industry with his uber-personality and amazing talent. We get to know more about him. On #Ask_IGirls we ask a queston, When is the right time to start dating? Puberty is a stage in life whereby someone grows from being a girl or a boy to being an adult, this stage is linked with a complication of feelings and an imbalance of hormones therefore, people going through this stage are unsure of the decisions they make and should be guided and fed knowledge about the challenges of puberty. In the South Africa with youth struggling to get keys to their success, Lethabo Bereng is chasing all his dreams and allowing no obstacles to take him back. So Lethabo is chasing all his dreams and so far he’s succeding. Our Chef Kagiso Motsumi cooked a storm and this issue he cooked lamb chops with peanut spinach and pasta salad. If showbiz was a pot of gold then Zani Challe would be Midas. This gifted lady was born on November 21, 1998 in the Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town. The multitalented woman was born in a Malawian family, she is the concept that illuminates how entertainment should look, feel and sound. Summer has graced, conquered and left us all looking absolutely dazzling with the Fashion trends that took course during last season but now a season most of us dread is about to make way. Winter does not necessarily mean that we have to look like a ball of clothing nor refrain from looking absolutely Fashionable and fashion blogger and influencer - mahlatse james gives us more information. Success versus significance. What’s the difference, and is there a difference? Being successful is a great personal reward that comes after hard work and an enormous investment of one’s time for a defined goal. Significance on the other hand, is the sense of fulfilment one feels after having helped someone else become successful through an investment of your own time and or money. Mr Shannon Rosenberg explains indepth.

SASSY, T AND R AS TH OF S
TALENTED REIGNING HE KING SLAYAGE!
Bujy Bikwa has been in the industry and he continues to make sure that he owns the industry with his uber-personality and amazing talent. The Zimbabwean-born artist was born as Sthembinkosi Junior Bikwa before he moved to the South African shores during the fall on 1992 with his mother and by the sassy Bujy had already knew what he came to South Africa for. He rose to fame after he was featured on the game show - Dance Your Butt Off where he showed feisty dancing skills that claimed his spot in the industry. Now, known as an influencer, producer, television and radio presenter and recently ventured into music he will still to continue reigning in the industry. We spoke to Bujy about his plans in the industry, life as an influencer and his future endeavors and this is what is what he had to say:
INSPIRATION BEHIND BUJY A lot of people do not know how Bujy came about. Mind enlightening me about it?
Before the whole “Bujy” character started, I was fresh from Orange Farm. I got to YFM known as Junior Bikwa and when we introduced ourselves as part of the Y Academy, at that time we were 12 finalists that were chosen to be part of the academy and I was fresh from the LoveLife Learnership while everyone was from University, I was quite intimidated to be honest but I had to roll with the punches. When everyone as asked to introduce their names I called myself Big Jay because from LoveLife I have been calling myself that but my fellow mates also called me Big Show. My programmes manager asked for my on-air alias and I stated that I will have to go with “Big Jay” and everyone chuckled when I uttered that name but then I ended up resorted to Big Show, they chuckled even more. When questioned why I did not go with a flamboyant alias since I am gay - I immediately thought of “Boogy.” I had to simplify it and that is when the alias “Bujy” was born as it was how I viewed it.
7
THE LIFE OF BUJY How do you consider your life in 5 minutes? I consider my life to be very real and extremely artistic because if someone had to stay in my mind, they would literally move out within 2 minutes because I am forever pondering about being innovative and I am constantly inspired. I would say that I am one individual who learn and meet new people on a daily. Unfortunately, for the industry that I am in being real and authentic, it is really not what people want. So, in a nutshell, my life is the realest, pure authenticity and absolutely exciting.
BUJY BIKWA THE FASHIONISTA You have always been a person that takes the fashion industry on a different level. How do you define your style? What inspires it? I always define my style this way: BIG, BOLD and UNAPOLOGETIC - and that is what most fashionista’s lack. When you look at the likes of EJ Johnson’s style (when he was still plus-sized) and the style of other established plus-sized designers; they were BOLD. It is absolutely somber that people want me to dress like a Gospel artist [no offense] but with being a size 42 (before losing weight I was a size 56) when you are a certain size, you cannot wear clothing that will make you look uncomfortable, the only way is go bigger, be braver and embrace it. Unfortunately, my sexuality does play a major role because I am gay and I will always be criticized about the way I dress myself. All the time when I dress, what inspires me is: I Pray that someone who is my size somewhere can be inspired by my outfit, because we are thought to be big, wear black and blend-in but when you are fully-figured and you cannot blend-in,
8
it is a problem. What I am trying to say is that every time when I dress, when I put on that cape, when I make that statement, when I create movement in my outfits, I am literally liberating that person and that is what inspires my style on a daily. Be big, be brave when rocking the red-carpet because 2 years down the line, Fashionista’s are going to shake my hand for the bold style is displayed.
A CHALLENGE, CANNOT BE A HURDLE There are quite a handful of challenges in the industry what are some of the challenges you faced before coming into the industry? To be honest, when you start in the industry it is quite complex but I had already prepared myself for the industry. There is one thing that youngsters need to understand before they say: “I want to be on television” - they must know what they want beforehand. I knew that there was something different about me from my toddler days up until now. One needs to define oneself before penetrating the industry. When coming into the industry, a sense of understanding of what one wants to do in the industry, it is very vital. I always knew that I wanted to do television and radio but I wanted something that has substance and frankly, radio has always been substance for any entertainer, you can do television but radio will define you intellectually. While in the industry, I knew that there is something different to offer and there was definitely no one like me in the industry. I only had gay guys like 3Sum, Somizi and David Tlale amongst a few that I could relate to but there was no one would talk to the audience like I did as I was still the younger one.
I still recall that I had mentors that would assist me in regards to propelling in the industry, at that time Bhoza from Skwatta Kamp was my mentor, Hlelo and Ntando when they were still on YFM mentored me as well. I used to call them once in a while and converse about radio. I really do not know but perhaps it is because I am smart [laughs] but I knew exactly what I wanted to do.
I grew up looking up to such individuals.
When you see a moment that defines you, a moment that you know you can make it, go for it. I am glad that I started off from being a dusty young man from Orange Farm and escalated myself to where I am now. I did not experience any challenges when penetrating the industry, I experienced them when I was already in the industry.
I saw that I was top three of the most influential gay personalities in South Africa and what I can say makes an influencer is someone that gives another individual a voice and with me I have given a voice of size and homosexuality.
DANCING MADE ME WHO I AM Dancing has propelled you to greater things. After Dance Your Butt Off, what are some of the things you pursued? I can literally say that Dance Your Butt Off gave birth to my television personality and the brand that is Bujy, it gave me the stamp of approval in the industry to say: “Yes, we agree”. When I was on Dance Your Butt Off, I was absolutely flabbergasted that I was that famous [laughs] and I was not even aware that the show was sitting on 7 million views every Tuesday. There was a point in time where I saw my picture on the side-cover of a magazine and honestly speaking I never dreamt of that ever in my life. After, Dance Your Butt Off I worked with MTN and did an advert with them, which came with a lot of lessons such as: responsibilities, who you befriend and who you put on your trust list. When I got eliminated on the show, I went back to work at YFM and ventured into television presenting soon after that I became a socialite and being an MC. I was fortunate enough to work and meet a lot of celebrities such Bonang, Dineo Ranaka and Twasa amongst a few -
Dance Your Butt Off took me from being just a radio presenter to someone that was literally celebrated in South Africa. You were named the most influential gay man of Vuzu’s 10 over 10. What can you say makes an influencer?
An influencer, in my own words I would say its someone that has presence, someone that gives life to another being. I have made a statement to say: actually as much as they think thy certain gay guys do not exist but this does exist. Most of all what I am about, you liberate people to compromise and to work with each other - that is the life of an influencer.
READY TO TAP INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY You are on the verge to release a new song. Can you please tell me more about it. What can your fans anticipate from it? Any collabo’s? I am releasing a new song which will be released by August. I am nervous [laughs] because I was busy with mastering the song. The song is exactly what has always inspired me when I started out dancing, I used to dance to artists such as Destiny’s Child, Missy Elliot and Rihanna just to name a few, it is exactly what made me move when I was young, what made me want to dance. The title of the song is called Body Quake. There are slow songs as well because I am planning to release to release an album. I will be doing visuals for the song first as I want to release a detailed package.
9
My fans an anticipate to dance and I Pray that Hip Hop / Pop diskjocks are going to love it as well. It is really a hardcore song and I am ecstatic about it. Body Quake will make one to quake to be more precise, my fans should definitely be ready. The sypnosis of the song is about someone who is heartbroken, someone who is trying to find love and eventually that long-awaited person does avail. They both find themselves dancing and caught up together. In essence, through all the heartbreak the dance floor splurges with love and glorifies the newly found love birds. I am not doing any collaborations as of yet because I do not want to force myself into artists lives. I am hoping to do a bit of collaborations soon with Fifi Cooper and Gigi Lamanye as I have always been a fan to them both. I would want to collaborate with a female artist on my second single. My second single will be released during the month of October. This amazing single will be dedicated to my lesbian and gay family - the title of the single will be called We Gonna Stand. I hope that everyone will enjoy it.
MULTI-TALENTED AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN STOP ME You are a content producer, radio-presenter, dancer, musician, actor and presenter amongst a few. How do you juggle everything in one? I juggle everything at once because I like keeping busy and one thing that has motivated me was when people would say NO to me and that NO, not being that I am not talented nor am I do not fit their caliber even for the fact that the show does not need me. When people say NO to me and insult me its fills so much fire in me. I moved to television production because I was not acting or being hired anywhere and I came with a concept and had a production company. Mzansi Magic gave me an opportunity to do one if their Mzansi Bioskope called
10
Jealous Makelwane. So, when people say NO to me I always find something to do as I am an entertainer, a creative and I am unstoppable. For me, it is never saying NO and that is how I keep busy. Music is something that I was born with. My father was a musician and my sister - Rudo Love is also a musician, who is currently pushing her music as well. Mainly with Bujy - music is what I always wanted to do, presenting is a skill that I learned through radio and to master. I am still trying to master the auto-cue part of things.
TRICK QUESTION Music or making television? Why did you choose that field? I would like to say that everything happens in a good time as I am so happy. I did radio, moved to television doing a music game show, it is quite amazing how God works. Everything that I have learned, it is going into one bag [laughs]. Music or making television? Both. Anyday, because you make television, you need sound and when you make sound you need the visuals. They are all married [laughs].
MY INSPIRATION DOMINATES AND SO DO I. Who would you say inspires you on a daily basis and why? What inspires me everyday is when I wake up in the morning and say to myself: “What can I do in my life, what best can I do in another person?”
Family inspires me on a daily basis and growing up in Orange Farm, the dusty streets always motivated me to propel and aspire to certain things. I am also inspired by love, I have seen people who have nothing but have unconditional love for each other. As much as I can be an entertainer, I do not want to die sad and lonely without comprehending the meaning of love and that is what inspires me.
THE BRIGHT FUTURE OF BUJY BIKWA What can your fans anticipate from you in the near future? Any endeavors in the pipeline? I am definitely Praying that soon I can make it back to radio because I have been working very hard. I hope my fans can Pray for me to make it back to that direction, it is not easy but I am working my way there. I still feel like my fans need some Buji on-air. More films are underway, more singles are making their way and more shows will be presented. I have a production company and when I am hosting auditions I would love to see each and every youngster to come and audition when I have open auditions.
be where you currently are? I would say to any youngster who wants to be where I am now or aspires for bigger things is to say to them: Ask yourself one question what is it that you want to offer? One thing to always remember is: nothing comes to you in a silver plate, you have to work for it and transmit your energy to the universe. Most importantly be careful who you surround yourself with. Your friends are important, the people that you hang out with will define how far you want to go with life. Do not be afraid to start at the bottom. You can always start on Mzansi Bioskope’s and escalate yourself in that regard. Do volunteer, even if it means MCing free for a gig. Start working on your career now, before you go for that audition. Start pushing your talent, so that when you in the industry, you are ready to receive the best. Always remember: You are young, you are beautiful, most importantly love yourself and always love God, regardless. Go for your dreams child. Run and catch them.
During the moth of October I will be throwing a major Gay Pride event. It is going to be something legendary. I will be working with DJ Eugene and Khanyi Mbau just to mention a few and not be a spoiler.
“Accept that what is yours will come to you in the right way at just the right moment.”
Anything in the pipeline that I am pushing now is definitely music as I am still working on that now.

AUZWEKE #Ask_IGirls
When is the right time to start dating? Puberty is a stage in life whereby someone grows from being a girl or a boy to being an adult, this stage is linked with a complication of feelings and an imbalance of hormones therefore, people going through this stage are unsure of the decisions they make and should be guided and fed knowledge about the challenges of puberty.
It is said that girls mature faster than boys and this relates to them falling ‘in love’ earlier than boys, there are words to consider though – love, lust and infatuation. These three words are separated by a very thin line so they are a bit confusing for many people. However, they should really be put to an understanding because the reason most people end up being emotionally hurt is because they never understood what it is they actually felt for their partner and this is very common during the ages of puberty but not limited to puberty ages. A mother was interviewed for a broader view of the subject; they say age comes with wisdom. Zelda Moriti, a professional nurse and a mother gave the answer that one should start dating once they have psychologically matured so to avoid regrets and disappointments. She advised that one waits for their minds to gain more knowledge because
12
enough knowledge drives one to making wise decisions. Mam’ Zelda does not consider dating as a bad thing as she considers it to be “a preparation for marriage,” she said. It is of course a bit of a challenge to know the age at which one is said to be psychologically matured, this is due to the uniqueness of everybody. No two brains are the same. So she further buttressed that it is better to measure it using grades at school. School is also one factor that should be deeply considered because unlike back then, when people even got married at the earliest age of 15 years, minors have to attend school so to better their IQ level and prepare them for a good future. School was not a major factor back then. Today, a 15-year-old is still considered to be a child because the law of South Africa does not consider someone that age a legal subject yet.
According to Moriti, once a person has a “strong sense of yes and no,” they are ready to be in a relationship because they would be at a stage where they deeply understand what it is they really want for themselves and that would reduce the chances of them regretting their actions. “The reason I would advise not to date prematurely is the negative physical and psychological impacts that comes along with dating,” said Moriti and she added that ages 12-19 are not ready to date because “that’s a peak time for studies and shaping into being professionals,” she said.
girls should start dating from the age of 21 because she believes that is the age when they have it in them to clearly make up their minds. That is the age when someone gets to see many aspects of life clearly.
The negative physical factors that come with dating include premature sex which one would regret after, broken virginity, sex related diseases and pregnancy. The more unwise decisions the person makes the more the number of their sex partners increase and once they reach the maturity level there will not be much to be proud of. All those may lead to dishonesty to yourself and people around you because it is not easy to talk about one’s mistakes, it was said that all those may also lead to depression.
“Parenting is ment for ready independent parents, it requires a lot and remember – a teenager has to focus on studies,” Leboea said. The purpose of dating is considered to be the preparation of the bigger step which is said to be a wedding, this means that dating is the foundation of marriage and the foundation should be strong so that whatever is built on it may be firm and last long.
A 27-year-old female from Pretoria, Nthabiseng Leboea had responses closely related to Moriti’s. She modified that
Leboea also explained that minors should not involve themselves in early age dating as this might disadvantage them in many ways, but her main concern was teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy has hit the country at storm leaving hearts of teenage mothers broken, and teenage mothers themselves hurting.
Therefore, a person should start dating once they are stable in all phases of life so that they will be able to do what they want and not be put under pressure being told what and how a relationship should be like.

ethabo ing dreams 15
In the South Africa with youth struggling to get keys to their success, Lethabo Bereng is chasing all his dreams and allowing no obstacles to take him back. The young star continues to give his fans reasons to never stop cheering and loving him. Lethabo Bereng prominently known as Kamo from Mamello and Pretty from The Hustle is not just chasing but he is catching his dreams, it may seem a little bit too much for a 23-year-old but for him age does not limit the number of tasks one can handle. Life is a journey that needs to be explored and so dreams should not be shuttered or left aside for some other time, Bereng is a multitalented person and he still manages to hold all his duties together and complete them on time. This costume designer, actor and model sees life as a place that needs to be explored, and he believes that life has more things awaiting him. So really, he loves what he does and wants more. As an actor, he said he was proud to fulfil the character of being a transgender and the reason was following that he wants the society to grow into accepting that there are different genders, and transgender should be accepted into the society, according to him the acceptance of transgender will grow a freer society “that is why people fought for freedom, it was about [saying] ‘if you are in the closet come out’,” said Bereng, he further explained that freedom was not necessarily about the struggle but “to just be you, it was time you lived the truth”. The workload may seem a bit too much for somebody his age but he has his own way of keeping everything at equilibrium. “I have a love affair with theatre, and television, and fashion,” said the guy from the west, Bereng. However, when doing so much there is always that one thing that takes the first trophy and for Bereng, fashion is his favourite. He said it himself, “If I had to choose one it’d be fashion any day,” he said it without a doubt.
16
“If there’s no work you make it,”
17
He is looking forward to pursuing more career options. However, he clarified that nothing will stop him from enjoying his free time. “I want to verge into presenting, I want to do radio deejaying, there’s a lot that I want to do and there’s a lot that I want to learn,” said the dream-chaser, Bereng. With all that being said he clearly stated that he takes no work on weekends, regardless of what it is because weekends are specially dedicated to himself and everybody around him. This is his time to associate with everybody, time to catch up on the life outside work and time to give his time away. Bereng is an art lover and it was a bit of a challenge to explain how his love for art was stimulated within him, it is as the say goes that love cannot be explained. He sees it as an inborn thing, a glued part of him, “I always loved art, because from primary – I always loved drawing and painting,” he said. He continued to narrate that he noticed this love during his high school years where he even realised that art is something he wants to take as a career, thus he chose to study drama related subjects. His surrounding did not support him with his career choice claiming that acting does not pay much and competition is in high rates which was claimed that it would decrease the likelihood of Bereng making it in the industry, but his mother was his number one fan. “I believed in acting, if there’s no work you make it,” so spoke Bereng. Here he is making it in the industry, and he said he will appear once again on Mamello season three. Acting is one of the things he loves doing but he does not consider it as his lifetime career, he emphasised that he is still passionate about acting but he wants to be behind the scenes because he is interested in knowing what happens behind the faces people see on screens. One more reason was that he is approached for the same character which is being a transgender or gay and he asserted that he wants to explore different characters. Currently though, Bereng is more focused on modelling and he recently modelled for Black Coffee’s fashion week and he sees it as a key to more modelling opportunities.
18
The dream is to be in the United Stated of America, New York, because of the opportunities open for modellers. He is a tall and skinny guy with the ability to look both like a guy and girl but he said that his features are not largely recognised to be good enough to be a good modeller in South Africa. He stated that South Africans only need to broaden their perception of models. “South Africans still believe in the traditional way of modelling, having six pack and all – and I don’t have that,” he said, but he still hopes to persuade people to see the beauty in being tall and slim. Almost everyone, if not everyone, has that one person they look up to and when he said, “I want to be the Somizi of my generation,” it was pretty much clear that Bereng is aiming for a lot of things, and above the rest he aims to be free just like Somizi himself, and maybe just above him. He knows that not just words will take him there, but “hard work will take you there,” he said so himself. Taking charity back home, Bereng is running an afterschool programme in Mohlakeng, Ranfontein. The purpose is to help people find themselves and be more comfortable in who and what they really are. “I’m just helping them build their self-confidence and self-esteem through dance and theatre,” Bereng. He is using a hand of help from Anne Modula known as Katlego from Muvhango. He highlighted that he wants to take people with him, he does not want to forget his people. The afterschool programme is meant for anyone from high school and above. By Boitumelo Kgobotlo

Lady P The smell and music was so comforting. The oils that they use for the massages are so mild and they work well for even those that have sensitive skins or sinus. The staff are professional and warm. They are able to give you intuitive privacy for you to change and get comfortable. The rooms are so beautiful, with great visual textures making a wonderful environment. The area is like being in a different world, your own world. Overall, the treatment feels good; it made me feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The skin was soft and I left with a glow. The pricing is a winner and I can’t wait to return there again at another time. I give the spa a 4/5 thumbs up. Lady V I highly recommend the health spa! The environment and staff members are so warm and competent. It is a great place to have a wedding, as you can do a
pre-wedding treatment at the spa, including your make-up and have the wedding at the Lodge and even honeymoon there! Social Clubs and other women who are older could get great value at this Health Spa as the treatments have health benefits for the elderly who struggle with joint pains and other movement restrictions. I give it a 5/5 for being reasonably priced and for the large range of offerings they have. Lady W I think it is a great way to celebrate important dates and times in your life. Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa influenced her to be who she is; genres like Hip Hop, Soul, Afro Pop and RnB motivate her and Beyoncé, Mary J Blige, and Michael Jackson are her favourites - just to mention a few. AUZWEKE Mgerezi When O-ties tradition meets modern sophisticaton About O-ties O-ties is a bow tie business by Ongiwe Mnduzulwana. With O-ties tradition meets modern sophisticaton. It is a blend of African print, and modern fabrics to create bow ties and pocket squares.
The idea behind “As I am a creative, fashion fanatic, and an arts person. Making my own clothes has always been a dream of mine. Before I started making the bow ties, I didn’t have any experience of textile maunfacturing. I had a couple of bow ties and traditional top in my collection. That is when I had the idea of making bow ties that are made of African print. I went to buy material, and a sewing machine that I didn’t even know how to use. I asked for help from my younger brother, who makes his own bags.” O-ties can be worn day- to-day at the office, special occasion or a wedding. The designs are very unique and custom made to suit individuals needs.
Vision The innitial idea was to just make the bow ties for gentleman. The ladies have began asking for their accesorries. The is even more demand for actual traditional outfits. With just 3 months since he began handling the needle, he is planning on advancing his sewing skills. Soon he will be extending the range and possibly collaborate with major retailers. Who knows in a long run he can even open his own shop, Darkie it is possible all you have to do is believe. The possibilites are endless, and the creative juices keep flowing. Ongiwe had a dream and all it needed was for him to make it a reality and in just 3 months his brand is needed by people and that forces him to work harder now. We at Auzweke! we want to wish him all the best and we hope that all goes well for him and his brand.

Summer has graced, conquered and left us all looking absolutely dazzling with the Fashion trends that took course during last season but now a season most of us dread is about to make way.
Winter does not necessarily mean that we have to look like a ball of clothing nor refrain from looking absolutely Fashionable. I spoke to Fashion Blogger and influencer - Mahlatse James about what you need to avoid this season and what will be trending. As a lover of Fashion and a trends-spotter this is what he had to say about this seasons trends and a must-avoid: Winter is just around the corner and fashion should not fade since this is more a very drastic season.
What do you think Fashionista’s should look forward to during Winter? Smart layering, considering that our winter is very short-lived in these parts.
32
Heaps of unnecessary clothes. Style should still reign paramount.
What are the trends that are going to be taking the Fashion Avenue by storm? A less focus on dictated trends and a better understanding of including a personal edit into what is largely available in stores.
Do you still think that people should still wear poncho’s? Can you support your answer? Absolutely! I love a good poncho. What better way to fend of the chills that a fuzzy wrap in a blanket style poncho? Ponchos have a cool way of looking amazing on all body shapes.
What do you think is that one Fashion item that is going to trend this season? A utility style bomber jacket.
What do you think is that one attire people should not opt to during winter? Anything that remotely looks like costume.
Which fashion item do you think won’t even make it during this season? Scarves. Thought super necessary, they have moved from functioning as a fashion piece.
As a Fashionista, what inspires your style? People, conversations, travel and books. I feed my mind so much and that always comes through in my clothing.
Your advice for Fashionista’s this season? Wear it because you will.
Your favourite Fashion quote? Fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life –Bill Cunningham. This rings true to my everyday routine.

Success
AUZWEKE Entrepreneur Corner
versus Significance
a young man. By the way, I’m still young, don’t know why I said that. But apart from all of that, where would I get the capital to start? How much capital would I need? Did I even need capital? Did I have the right qualification to start? Should I perhaps have gone to university? All these questions are not only overwhelming but very dangerous too, as it has the potential to derail you and your purpose.
Hi, my name is Shannon Rosenberg and I am a small business owner on the West Rand of Johannesburg. I want to briefly share on my title above, yeah that one: success versus significance. I started a small business exactly one year ago and my reason for doing so is because of a personal conviction. If you’re not wondering about my title, then you should. I had many opportunities to venture into business before I took the plunge. I always anticipated at one point in my life, that I would, it just always seemed unreachable and too much of a sacrifice especially as
34
I eventually did start my business and with very little, in fact with nothing but wisdom and bootstrapping. Bootstrapping is a start-up: an internet-based business or other business type with minimal to no financial resources, or help from investors. My entrepreneurship journey started when I was eight. I sold sweets, ice lollies, we called it ‘chupas’ back in the day and frozen yoghurt, or ‘mayo’ from our home. My dad was my investor for this entrepreneurship venture and this was, I believe, my start in business. Hey, we all have to start somewhere and we all start small and I was taught to never despise small or humble beginnings. My reason for selling sweet treats at the time, was not because I wanted to make money, but because we had only one other tuck-shop in the area and they controlled the market. And we know that if we only have one player in the market, they then have the whole pie to enjoy. Suffice to say, my little tuckshop venture ended, arose again some years later and ended a final time because my desire to play outside in my neighbourhood was greater than my desire to be in business as an eight, 10 and 12-year-old. I’m sure you can appreciate that.
Being in business with the purpose of being successful is great! I will be the first to advocate that for anyone. But being in business to be successful for yourself only is where this article starts tilting. The world today is filled with so called ‘self-made’ men and women, self-made millionaires, heck even billionaires. And we are still not any closer to alleviating poverty or social ills. So how is it that we can have so many people who are successful and we still experience societal issues? Well, here’s my take, when starting out your business, you experience many challenges and these challenges not only challenge you, but the viability of your idea or business. So, you start understanding, that your road to success is not going to be easy, but you buckle down nonetheless and you get ready for the ‘hustle’. nine to five turns into seven to seven for some, weekends become weekdays, and evenings become late afternoons. Sheesh, sleep becomes a luxury to some, not that that’s a bad thing, “A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands, then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit and scarcity will attack you like an armed robber” Proverbs 6:10-11. And on this journey for success, it’s ok to start developing a sense of this is mine as I am the only one experiencing what it takes to make this happen. You’re actually not the only person experiencing it. You see, there are many entrepreneurs on the same road seeking out success. Many have come from difficult backgrounds and some just have amazing ideas and concepts, but the common factor here is, they all strive for one goal called success. A few challenges later, some hurdles on the way and a coupla hoops of fire to jump through and there it is: ‘I’ve made it!’ ‘I am now successful!’ ‘This is my time to shine!’
Great! But now what? Does it become about the fancy cars and untouchable swag? This is where you meet the fork in the road and it too challenges you. Might seem not, but it does, and if you haven’t yet got there, rest assured… you will!
You see, this road challenges your foundation. Are you going to make a difference in the world with your recent found success, your hard-earned success, let’s not forget that you have worked for this right? Or are you going to change your endeavour for success and use it to propel others into successful futures as well? Will your business be the voice in the room with all the suits and shiny shoes to address societal issues by coming up with solutions? Or will you just button up your expensive suit and join in the conversation of who signed the biggest contract this year? Significance is sometimes the road less travelled by many, but it sure is the most scenic! The opportunity to use your success for the benefit of others is possibly one of the greatest journeys you’ll ever embark on. Our beloved ex-president, Nelson Mandela said it best “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Deciding to start a business because you recognise a need in society or in your community is already a good start. A business based on satisfying the needs of others and helping the community is sure to prosper. However, your journey to success also comes with its own challenges, sometimes even more, but rest assured that this road has no fork in it as you are already on the road to significance. The depression - a mental bruise overlooked A harsh scold, shove, push, punch then the next thing you know, you are having a map of bruises.
South Africa is experiencing a spirt of women abuse cases. It has been reported that abuse mostly result from the victim’s significant other or members of their community known to them. Although most of these cases leave victims with physical damages or fatal endings, we often tend to overlook the deep emotional cuts, aches and mental bruises these victims suffer as a result of abuse. A victim of abuse undergoes psychological dents that require professional assistance. Seeking professional psychological assistance does not symbolise weakness and inability to solve personal problems. It simply indicates that one has the ability to identify a problem and is willing to solve it thoroughly. In an effort to empower women, we found pleasure and profound honour to meet with Clinical psychologist Dr M Daventier who will be unpacking the subject of depression induced or that resulted from abuse and offering advice on healing the emotional and mental bruises as accompanying results. Dr Daventier briefly defined depression as one’s gradual change in functioning and behaviour characterised by having low energy levels, inability to sleep, loss of appetite, persistent tearfulness and some flare of aggression. She further supported this definition by indicating that women or girls suffering from
36
depression tend to be less productive in their occupations and studies, they are socially withdrawn and experience a degree of fear of relationships. We should, however, acknowledge that there could be other etiologies that may account for the above mentioned signs and symptoms, consult with your health care provider. Well you may be starting to understand why females from school, church, work or around the neighbourhood have been ‘moody’ of late. Dr Daventier mentioned that if the depression of victims of abuse is not treated, the victims may suffer emotional distress and low self-esteem which may have devastating results such as suicide. “Women across all phases of life are predisposed to abuse” she said, “I mean from childhood till adulthood” she added. Women are susceptible to abuse irrespective of age, race, and social standing. “This may be exacerbated by the reported ineffectiveness of the police in dealing with such cases,” Dr Daventier indicated. She further acknowledged the challenges the police encounter when having to deal with such cases. She further commented that more efforts from companies and the South African Department of Social Development and police services are required in dealing with women abuse.
“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” - Mother Teresa Dr Daventier
In her opinion, awareness and empowerment is paramount for addressing this issue through knowledge and understanding. According to the Dr, both genders need to be equipped with social, coping, and emotional regulation skills. When someone is shouting at you, slapping them is not the best way to put down a fire. “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” unknown source.
The following institutions where identified by Dr Daventier to be the fundamental role players in creating awareness and understanding amongst genders to eradicate women abuse. 1. Residential homes (families), 2. Schools, 3. Churches/religious institutions, 4. Civil society, and 5. Hospitals and clinics. In a home setting, a girl and boy
child will have to be groomed equally and get to be taught social skills. Schools do attempt to teach learners about these skills however, “the curriculum needs to be revised and made more practical than theoretical,” she said. Religious leaders have to initiate or intensify their counselling towards victims and empower their members. “Civil society may contribute towards welfare programs however, corporate wellness programs need more attention and support,” said Dr Daventier.
According to Dr Daventier, hospital and clinic settings have the following services; you will have to contact your local health care provider to find out more: 1. Individual psychotherapy, 2. Marriage or couples counselling, and 3. Group therapy.

BMW M Experience: A track day par excellence!
“6 Hours; 7 hot BMWs and a race track; what can beat this for sheer unadulterated fun?” 38
Compiled by Phuti Mpyane
The Pecking Order
We spend a lot of our time writing about new entries into the SA market and if you read our editor’s week section, we also devote daily time with one or two new cars. We usually divulge much of the everyday experience in car ownership, what nifty features they have, and at times give you a light glimpse into regular road driving performance and the speed that cars carry away from standstill and through corners.
Winfield BMW 745i
Today was different. We are giving a full-on six-hour blow-by-blow account where we drive the religion out of the most scintillating cross-section of BMW M cars on sale. Of course, track driving isn’t the easiest of things to do for the majority of the nation but we expect that the specific Petrosexual is likely to have put in some track time before or, is seriously contemplating visiting a venue soon.
The Track Aldo Scribante is on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. At 2.8 km it’s a compact and fast flowing track, and happens to be one of two of my all-time favourite places to unleash a performance car. It has mix of slow and fast corners and some sections are tricky and technical. Know the track intimately and it rewards.
As a special side show BMW SA also brought out a restored racing Winfield 745i for hot laps while we sample the arsenal of modern street racers. As a tyke I had a raging passion for all things automotive, more so racing cars and you’d find me glued to the box watching all manner of local racing action, some of them where this very same BMW 745i took part in. As a pre-cursor to the action, I get strapped into the passenger side to feel what an eighties race car felt like driven in anger, and get to relive my earlier imaginations of being the late Tony Viana.
BMW M140I I’ve always found that starting low and working upwards towards an earth-shattering climax is ultimately the best way to deal with a bunch of missiles, so first up is the 240kW producing M140i hatch.
The Cars On site we have an E23 Winfield 745i and not all of BMW M products. However the selection is noticeably compact with a BMW M140i hatch; M240i coupe dressed in M Performance bits and a bevy of BMW M4s; a standard coupe; an M3 Competition Pack and the big daddy of them all, the flippantly rare M4 DTM Champion Edition. What we know is that all are street based cars with latent track focus except for a lone BMW 7 Series in V12 M760Li form. 39
This is BMW’s Golf R and Audi S3 rear wheels driven challenger. Expecting an uninspiring result, the light understeer in its nose hits you as early as ‘turn one’; a tight right-hander with an almost hidden apex that needs a leading, and momentarily short squirt of throttle towards a straight-line no more than 50 meters before you have to jump on the anchors again. It’s a surprisingly capable ball of fun and a hoot to drive at the most ragged of edges. You must remember to remove the inside boot cover to liberate its 3-litre engine’s amusing whooshy induction noises.
BMW M3 Competition Pack I intentionally skipped the regular M4 in favour of the modified CP for a legitimate reason. If I could taste the variances of the angrier car first, then I can easily spot the flaws that justify its existence. The Competition Pack gets a more striking look thanks to unique paints and an alloy that provocatively hints at a wider track width, which it enjoys over the regular car. It’s also extraordinarily loud.
Score
You can use its compact dimensions to your advantage on both slow and fast corners. Although the rear can be easily unstuck with throttle at the incorrect moment, it’s largely easy to place on any spot on the track, and its power is suitable enough for proper exits and does a fair job of reeling in the main straight.
BMW M240i Order it with M Performance bits and it arrives with a slightly firmer suspension which is easily exploited. You can carry discernibly more speed and confidence on fast flowing bends. Aside from its fruitier- sounding sports exhaust system it does a commendable job of all-round dynamism. Plus it looks spookily handsome with its longer skirts licked with contrasting paint; lovely design alloys and M stripes.
Score It shoots forward with enthusiasm and it’s professional, clean and predictable on the limit. It suggests total elimination of front-end wash and its rear wheels clamp onto tarmac with tenacity. Its power delivery doesn’t intimidate and at this point clearly shows its domination above a regular M3; my last experience of it being a shot-gun ride with ace BMW works driver Bruno Spengler who drove it ragged minus its traction nanny.
BMW M760Li Under normal circumstances the presence of a big limo on racing tarmac is understandably challenging and sacrilegious, and worse still if its mirrors are filled with the hungry noses of a pair of BMW M4 Coupes. But here it is, and here I am hurling its massive frame at Aldo corners. It has a rear wheel biased xDrive system and a badass twin-turbo V12 up-front. This is going to require a different approach.
Score It’s a tighter, neater riot above an M140i hatch that’s brought upon by an undercarriage tweaked specifically for track antics and the added body rigidity of a coupe style body-shell. It can also be had in manual transmission form for those who want to go sideways more and effortlessly. 40
the back and ultimately unnerving to the novice. To the Competition Pack this is a bunch of flaws but at heart it’s a character-building spice that can enjoyed on a lovely piece of road, and a damn fine excuse to fore-go the mod-cons rich M4 CP and its premium.
BMW M4 DTM Competition Edition
Score Point and coax into bends and use the sledge hammer acceleration of its V12 mill to put a distance between it and the hunting pair of M4s. This is the strategy that was applied to vanquish those coupes and it worked thoroughly. Mind you, the new M760i is thus far the fastest accelerating series BMW in the company’s history with 3.7 seconds claimed to reach 100km/h. Aside from this impressive feat, and a hilariously loud and boorish soundtrack for a presidential limo, it’s no track car.
The moment of the day is delivered by a very special and exclusive car created to celebrate BMW works driver Marco Wittmann’s championship winning ways in the 2016 DTM season. In essence, beneath the skin and the roll-cage, it’s the same BMW M4 GTS that we drove at Kyalami Raceway back in 2016 but features nuanced differences, such as a fixed rear wing instead of the adjustable unit of the GTS. It also lacks the preposterously protrusing front-end splitter system. Its rarity is bolstered by a 200 unit global count with only 15 commissioned for South Africa. It’s the rawest, most pared back of the exalted group here.
BMW M4 This is BMW’s cult car; the benchmark for all BMW products to emulate at different levels. Tickling its throttle while stationary invokes a keenness that should not be messed around with and its regularity below the CP is well hidden. It puts up a sound defense against its pricier, bolder versions.
SCORE
Score If you ignore the lack of heightened musicality, its slight bluntness and the inability to replicate the CPs sharper turn-in; nevertheless, it flexes its customary track-driving capabilities with aplomb. It’s a touch more understeery on the limit; a touch snappier at
Where some of the M cars grouped here can be labelled as focused sports cars, the DTM is pure race car. There is not a single piece Aldo tarmac that it doesn’t pin down with alarming precision and laying down all of its 368kW and 600Nm on tarmac is among the most connected to a road an enthusiast driver can feel. Turn in is incredibly true; the rear axle shimmies about like a race car and the grip on its wheels near mythical. BMW has triumphantly created a DTM car that is allowed an e-tag. It also serves as a basic skeleton for a full-on racing homologation if you want. It’s ready to race, period, and would be an absolute shame if none of the 15 units sold see no track action, instead languishing in posh suburban garages, possibly carpeted and scented. From years and years ago We are all told “time heals everything” But does it really reconcile? If it does is it at your time or at its own time? From a reflection Time calculates life in emotion. Some say good things come to those who wait, then again They say time wasted never be regained. What a contradiction? However, worry not life comes in many forms Every situation or person That leaves or stays in your life is either a blessing or a lesson Like the four seasons Come sunshine come rain Life is happiness and pain.
