With an extraordinary love for life, she dabbles in the world of radio and modelling which bring up th resilience of her opinion. As a teenager watching Yesterday starring Leleti Khumalo inspired her to tell South African stories. “Watching that particular movie showed me the power actors and actress have in describing something to a society, and I wanted to be part of that. She intends to continue being a household name in South African television while culminating a role in the radio and media space.
7
Behind the scene
What was the first TV gig you had? Isibaya is my first ever TV gig.
1. Did you always aspire to be an actor? I have always aspired to be in entertainment in whichever way or form, I started out thinking I would become a musician because of how much I loved writing songs and performing, I also have a degree in writing but it would seem as if God and the universe had other plans for me because I am now an actress. I am not complaining though, I love acting with all my heart.
3. What motivated your acting career? There a couple of actresses that I have watched over the years, both national & international. I loved Leleti Khumalo In the movie yesterday, I remember watching the movie and thinking about how I would love to do what she does. I am immensely inspired by Viola Davis, she is amazing on How to get away with Murder.
4. What do you do besides acting? I am a radio host (which is something I am viciously pursuing), I have been with two radio stations already and I intend to continue with radio because I love it so much. I also love to write. I think once I have established myself and my brand properly in the industry I will begin to write and produce my own content. I dream of having my own talk show, something with a Wendy Williams vibe to it but we will see what the future holds.
8
5. How does it feel to be a woman in the entertainment space? Of course there is plenty more to deal with when you are female in the industry. It goes from the disgusting looks you get from other females who think they are more deserving of the role than you are or misogynistic men who will do and say anything to get you in bed with them. But I think woman face challenges in every other industry they are in, aside from entertainment women are always being challenged. I really hope that this situation changes in the future and both men and women can treat each other with respect.
6. What challenges have you faced in your career? Sometimes when people don’t know you they tend to be disrespectful but I have learnt how to handle that and deal with those kinds of people with ease. There also a lot liers in our industry, people who pretend to be something they are not. I have learnt to take everything at face value and go with actions more than just talking.
7. Did you take part at the national shutdown women’s march on August 1? If yes, why? Yes I will. So much has happened to women in this country, so much happens to women on a daily, I think it’s time we stand up and demand to be heard.
8. Are you involved in helping communities in any way?
Yes, I volunteer as a counsellor at my church. I still want to do something for the small township I grew up in back in the KZN, I have some things set in place and hopefully they will come into fruition.
9. Words to women in SA. You are beautiful and much stronger than you realise. You are worth and all your dreams are valid, always remember to be God first and allow him to put things in place for you.

POOL MASTER Former world pool champion and currently founder of the Soweto pool association, Wetsi Morake, spoke to Auzweke’s Gift Tlou, about his passion for the sports and the development of pool in the country thus far.
Who is Wetsi Morake? I’m a former Africa champion in pool, I’ve also won the world championship. Right now I only play part time as I’m occupied with administrative duties.
Can you please break down your role for us? I conduct administration for pool games in and around the townships. So basically we do leagues, arrange tournaments and also exhibition matches as well as training and development programmes.
How was your career as a pool player? It was great! I had the privilege of playing in European countries, also in Asia where I was representing South Africa in Blackball and that is when I
12
won the world championship.
How were the rewards back then? Back then I wouldn’t say the money was that good compared to now. I remember after winning the world championship there was no price money. So what happened is that, I was offered an opportunity to travel the African Continent and develop the sports. Only 5 African countries played this sport back then but that number has increased to 16 now. Not to mention your European countries which are doing great?
How did your love for pool come about? I started playing at the age 11. We had a restaurant at my house, so I’d play every after school. My brother Prince was my coach alongside his friend Nick Zulu, who was the first South African Champion.
How would you describe the standard of pool?
Are women welcomed to participate?
Well we are striving to be professional but of course, that will be done with ease as soon as we have enough sponsors on board.
Yes! Every team is encouraged to have a women player in the team and a junior to accommodate development. Some black women in the townships are still reluctant to join this sport compared to Indians or whites but hopefully we can narrow the margin in the near future.
How do interested people join the league? We’ve got professional tournaments, whereby in order to qualify you need to play in the league and other open tournaments where anyone can enter. So for anyone interested you need to be a team of 5 and ensure that you’ve got at least one lady in your team and a u/14 or u/18 player.
Tell us more about the league? This is a team based league; each team consists of 5 players. Currently we’ve only got one structure but we planning on expanding in the near future.
Can one make a living out of this? That’s where we headed towards. This previous weekend we had a guy by the name of Sbu Gumede who walked away with R25000. Yes before you couldn’t make a living out of this but things will change now, we are very fortunate to be funded by the national lottery to develop this sport even further. We are also in negotiations with the government hopefully they come on board. Gauteng sports and recreation has also funded us to do a project called tour de pool, going to townships and teach youngsters this sport.

Why is that you’ve only attracted a few sponsors? A lot of sponsors want to put in their money where there’s media coverage. This is something we’ve been struggling with, if we had enough media coverage I’d be telling you a different story right now.
that parents can feel free to release their kids. We are hoping to have these around Gauteng. And educate people from different communities that pool doesn’t have to be about Taverns and alcohol.
How are you planning on grooming the What are your plans next champion? Right now we’ve already approached for the future? a number of schools about It’s to expand and make sure this sport is well known and gets the recognition it deserves. Yes pool is played in taverns mostly, but we’ve already started approaching councillor’s so that we can be offered community facilities like halls in order for us to set up so that kids can play. That way we will be able to attract more kids since it won’t be associated with taverns were the young ones aren’t allowed.
Tell us about the Q Sports Development? That’s a programme which we’ve started. The main aim is to get more venues which are alcohol free and so
14
accommodating this sport at their schools and some schools are already buying into the concept.
Any final message you’d like to share? People need to understand that pool is a sport. It just that some people weren’t educated about this kind of sport but things are slowly coming together and in the near future it will be financialy viable for both man and women By Gift Tlou.

Lobola negotiations
When a man finally meets with a woman whom they want to spend their lives with the first thing they do is to propose and send the uncles to the woman’s home so they can start lobola negotiations. Lobola negotiations part of our culture as Africans the meaning of this is to build relationship and friendship between the two families. I for one have been involved in lobola negotiations and I can say it gets tense when negotiations start, when the anger, aggression heats up you would swear that it will end up in a fist fight. Word of advice when a male sends his uncles you must send people who can talk and who know how to negotiate because if you send people who can’t talk then you will end up paying a lot of money. As a woman, make sure that you also send the best of the best negotiators people who know how to negotiate. On that note let’s note forget that lobola is to build a relationship between two families so don’t sell your daughter rather negotiate a reasonable fee for relationship purpose. Don’t you think that ladies whom they gonna pay lobola for have to atleast have a say during negotiations? Because I think they know their value and worth and they can convince and advice their uncles after all they know how deep their partners pockets are. I know a situation were a guy was charge R80 000 to pay lobola and 5 years later they haven’t payed the balance because that’s too much for him and if his partner was part of the negotiations she was gonna tell the uncles that the fee is too much for his partner that’s way above his budget.
16
In 2016 we see a lot of engagement but no weddings, don’t you think that the engagement ring must come with a date for lobola negotiations or expiry date or else you will be Lord of the rings for more than 2 or more years I tell you. Lobola is mainly a way of appreciation towards the wife’s family. This was done with cows back in the days, but has now converted to money. Cows/Cattle were a symbol of honour to the family for raising a good Makoti and also joining two families together.
Lobola negotiations tips: 1- Find out how much can your man afford to pay for lobola 2- Set up a meeting with one of your favourite uncle and advice him that your man can afford this much, so can the uncles please understand. 3- Day before negotiations no sleep over Why do our families charge a lot of money when coming to lobola? Lobola money does it go to the family or will they help when you get married?
Do you think that ladies deserve to have a say during their lobola negotiations? Precious
Why do our families charge a lot of money when coming to lobola? # Families have become greedy on this. They have turned it out to be some kind of business transaction over time forgetting the real reason for it. Most of the time is the uncles and the people around the table for the negotiations that makes these decisions. The reasons behind this ridiculous amount of money is that they bring things like “the daughter is educated! She has degrees, she doesn’t have a child, but if she does have one with the guy, its also a charge. So they count all this to raise the money to be even more to what it should be.
2- Lobola money does it go to the family or will they help when you get married? # Normally its a token to thank the family for their daughter, and the family can use it for the celebration at the brides home.
3- Do you think that ladies deserve to have a say during their lobola negotiations? # Somehow they do in way of making her parents aware that her man can afford so much. And that they (parents) can tell the people that will be negotiating for her how much money they should ask for. That way its easy because we not playing guessing games.
Leonie Why do our families charge a lot of money when coming to lobola?
• Nowadays families tend to charge a lot of money, because they feel that they’ve maybe taken the wife to school, university and maybe she’s doing well financially. They’ll charge a sum equivalent to what she earns and the lifestyle she lives.
2- Lobola money does it go to the family or will they help when you get married? Good families will charge a reasonable sum in order to help each other with the wedding and traditional ceremony. Some will not even help out with the wedding arrangements and feel that they are entitled to that lobola money.
3- Do you think that ladies deserve to have a say during their lobola negotiations? Yes and No. If you know that you love your man, and want to marry him. You should know exactly how much he makes and if he can afford for a wedding. So you would have a proper conversation when he tells you that he’ll be sending his uncles for negotiations. You would both discuss the budgets and come up with a sum that would suit your lobola, and that will give your family an idea of how much they need to charge. Some ladies would literally treat this as a money making scheme for their family to squeeze money of out the poor guy, thinking he’s monied. Next thing you know he’s in debt and you’re happy that you got married and your family is sorted. This also causes tension in the relationship cause it will take him time to recover from that big debt he took just for lobola. By Thapelo Khumalo

T
hese questions tend to rise in the long run, maybe you are no longer comfortable around your partner, or you have lost interest. Break things off is not always the best option, here are a few things to check if you are in a healthy relationship – they will also help you keep a healthy partnership. Reflect and check if:
Are you comfortable speaking your mind Are you comfortable speaking your mind with your partner? Be able to say whatever to them, without having to consider if what you say will sound stupid. In an unhealthy relationship, one would always have to choose their words for fear of being judged. There is no judgement in a good relationship.
You like yourself around them Enjoying their company is one important factor of a healthy relationship. You must be able to like being around them, whether you are quiet or loud.

You feel safe Safety is one characteristic of love. Feeling safe means being comfortable and being able to rely on them.
Sense of belonging Your partner is your other 100% - feeling a sense of belonging shouldn’t be in question, otherwise the relationship is dysfunctional. You should feel in place, you should feel like this is where you want to be. By: Ayanda Nxonga

FEELING OF BITTERNESS
22
Does this feel like you, a feeling of aloneness? Feeling like he never listened to your silence? Trust became an issue. Attachment became an issue. All was just lies, everything disrespected. Nothing communicated.. Jealousy became your nature, Cause openly there is another. Some other has his attention, time and, care. It does not make sense right, all you did was to give, give and, give. You gave him every - thing, He left and he left you with nothing! You are not alone because something is wrong with you. You are alone because someone walked away with a piece that belongs to you. He took your love to focus on a love of his own. Do you still care? Care for the love of a person that’s careless for self care? It’s time to stand up and take every - thing back. Take your love back. Take your life back. Stop them tears from falling, And challenge the past. For the future is rising, Like a phoenix at it’s best. Stop it with the bitterness. After all life goes on dear lionness! There is a lesson in the past. A gift in the present. And there’s future in a dream... Go on and dream big! Onalenna Shaka
