2017 Conference Theme: Dental Trauma in Children & Adolescents The theme for the 2017 Annual Conference on September 14, 15 & 16, according to Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chair, Dr. Charles Lekic, will showcase to the Pediatric Dental community, speakers with extraordinarily high academic and clinical reputations world-wide.

On Friday, ‘The Legend’, Dr. Jens O. Andreasen will deliver the Keynote session: New studies on the long-term fate of traumatized primary teeth and consequences for permanent successors, and new knowledge and pulp healing events in traumatized permanent teeth suffering luxation injuries.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE / MOT DU PRÉSIDENT Dear colleagues, I hope all of you managed to enjoy the winter months wherever you are located in this great country.

Having said that I am sure we are all excited about the arrival of the summer season. It has been a busy year so far for the Academy.

We face many challenges from the arrival of silver diamine fluoride, re-writing of sedation guidelines across the country, equitable funding for government supported dental programs, etc. I know you will agree that the key to any organization’s success is the perceived value the members receive by supporting the organization. The hard work of our members that volunteer their precious time to the Academy keep us strong. Communication between the Executive and the various committees via regularly scheduled teleconferences with our Executive Director keep our efforts focussed and coordinated. Through our representation on CDSA (Canadian Dental Specialties Association), CPS Oral Health Section, RCDC, AAPD, and government we stay relevant and maintain our national voice. In support of these efforts we currently represent in excess of 90% of pediatric dentists across Canada as members.

A Message from the Chair of the Winnipeg Organizing Committee Dear Members, It is a great pleasure for the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry/Académie canadienne de dentisterie pédiatrique (CAPD/ACDP) to welcome you to the 2017 Annual Conference in Winnipeg!

This exciting event will address the theme of Dental Trauma in Children and Adolescents. We are very pleased to inform the Pediatric Dental community that the speakers selected for this conference are of extraordinary high academic and clinical reputation world-wide.

Dr. Jens O. Andreasen (Copenhagen, Denmark), the father of contemporary dental traumatology will be the Keynote speaker.

In addition we have secured the expertise of Dr. Christopher McCulloch (University of Toronto), one of the top dental scientists in North America, Dr. Leland McFadden (University of Manitoba), past President of the RCDC, and Dr. Rodrigo Cunha (University of Manitoba) a prominent researcher and clinician.

Other features of the Conference will include the 3M Graduate Student Research Presentations, and the CAPD/ACDP Annual General Meeting.

The Conference will take place on September 14-15-16 at the Fort Garry Hotel located within walking distance of Winnipeg’s famous tourist attraction, the Forks, and one of the newest and most acclaimed museums in the world, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Dr. Charles Lekic Chair, LOC, 2017 Annual Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba You volunteered to be the Chair of the CAPD/ACDP Winnipeg Annual Conference in 2017. Why should members and other Pediatric Dentists travel to Winnipeg for this event?

This year the scientific program at the CAPD/ACDP conference will include outstanding speakers among such, Dr. Jens Andreasen, “the legend” and “the father of dental traumatology” we know and practice today. Winnipeg is also the home to one of the best ballet groups in North America, home to the Jets, to many exciting historical sites and the largest Human Rights museum in the world that will be hosting the CAPD/ACDP reception night.

What is your connection with Winnipeg?

I arrived from Toronto 21 years ago to take the position at the University of Manitoba. I was invited to make the changes to the undergraduate program and possibly develop the graduate program in pediatric dentistry.

Collectively, both goals have been fulfilled.

In general, why are events such as the Annual Conference, important for Pediatric Dentists to attend?

The Annual Conference is the place where many very relevant decisions for our specialty are to be reached. It is also an event where important clinical and research information is to be shared that could lead to the improved patient care. It is also the place and time to meet old friends and colleagues.

Specifically, what is it about the scientific program at the conference that will enhance the careers of those attending?

This conference has a unique topic related to dental trauma in children and adolescents. This is an important part of care pediatric dentists provide almost on daily basis. The selection of Dr. Andreasen as the key note speaker and speakers such as Dr. McCulloch, Dr. McFadden and Dr. Cunha will provide the one time opportunity to be part of something special and memorable.

Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

Working with children is fun and they are “special people” in every possible way. At the same time, I worked briefly with adults and I didn’t like it. I apologise to adults for what I just said.

Where did you do your training?

At the University of Belgrade and the University of Copenhagen.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

The fact that there is never the same day when it comes to working with children and that pediatric dentistry is the entire dentistry applied to children. How exciting is that?!

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Working with some parents can be quite challenging. One should not forget, that rarely if ever, it is the “fault of the child patient” but on contrary it mostly relates to the upbringing.

What is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric Dentistry?

The notion that there is one approach in managing a child patient. Trying to use one way approach is the most common reason for being unsuccessful in treating pediatric dental patients.

You have a Committee of Volunteers helping to plan and implement the Annual Conference, including Drs. Jay Biber, Chris Yue and Brad Klus. What is the message you would send to Pediatric Dental Students, Graduates and Active Members about (a) the value of Volunteering?

Volunteering is part of giving back and making the difference. These are the values on which our specialty was founded. (b) the value of getting involved with CAPD/ACDP? Being part of CAPD/ACDP is being part of the professional family. What is more important than to support your “family”?

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

So far I am sleeping well and that I believe is an important part of relaxation.

CAPD/ACDP’s 2017 Annual Conference in Winnipeg will feature these World Class Speakers!

Dr. Jens O. Andreasen: New studies on the long-term fate of traumatized primary teeth and consequences for permanent successors, and new knowledge and pulp healing events in traumatized permanent teeth suffering luxation injuries.

Thursday September 15, 10:30 to 12:00 and 13:15 to 15:00.

Dr. Andreasen received his dental degree from the Royal Dental College, Copenhagen, in 1959. He did his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital in Copenhagen, where he now is an associate Professor.

Dr. Andreasen has authored 400 publications and 12 textbooks, covering topics such as dental traumatology, tooth replantation and autotransplantation, tooth eruption and tooth impaction. In relation to traumatology the Textbook and Color Atlas of .Dental Traumatology is now in its 5th edition and includes 62 contributors.

He founded the interactive Dental Trauma Guide in 2008 which is now being used in 180 countries. It contains information of a series of prospective long term studies of all types of traumatic dental injuries carried out at the trauma center and Department of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery as well as information from 50 animal experiments reproducing treatment scenarios of various dental traumas affecting primary as well as permanent teeth.

Dr. Andreasen has received four honorary doctorate degrees and has been an invited lecturer in 49 countries.

Course outline: 1. Primary tooth traumatic injuries. New knowledge about healing events and healing complications. A survey of 6 fracture types and 6 luxation types.

2. Transferred damage to permanent successors. How big is the risk and can this be predicted knowing the type of trauma and age of the patient?

3. How sensitive to trauma are the various cell components in the developing tooth germ? Can they regenerate after trauma and what happens if this is not the case? . of permanent teeth is very complex and has been analyzed experimentally and 4. Pulpal healing after luxation clinically at the Dental Trauma Clinic in Copenhagen, Denmark for more than 50 years. This lecture will demonstrate these varieties of pulpal healing and the long-term risks related to each injury type.

Learning objectives: 1. What are the possible healing events after trauma in the primary dentition and can they be predicted?

2. How sensitive are the permanent successors to traumas in the primary dentition?

3. Which parts of the developing tooth germ can regenerate after trauma?

4. If pulpal healing takes place after trauma in the permanent dentition, what types of tissue will then be found in the pulpal chamber? Are these healing types stable over time?

Dr. Christopher McCulloch: Healing Potential of Oral Soft and Mineralized Tissues in the Paediatric Patient Friday September 15, 08:45 to 10:15.

Christopher McCulloch is the Canada Research Chair and Professor and Director of the Matrix Dynamics Group at the University of Toronto. He focusses on the biology of the extracellular matrix and how the matrix regulates cellular responses in wound healing, inflammatory and fibrotic conditions.

Dr. McCulloch is a recognized leader in the field of matrix biology as indicated by continuous funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and other federal agencies in Canada for the last 30 years and the publication of more than 280 peer-reviewed publications in high ranking journals. He has made seminal contributions to the field including the role of the extracellular matrix in in shaping cellular responses of fibroblasts to diabetes and to inflammatory mediators.

Dr. McCulloch has also made important contributions in the structure and regulation of the cytoskeleton and how the cytoskeleton affects signaling processes in fibroblasts and contributes to transmission of biophysical signals that alter cellular signaling pathways. Dr. Leland McFadden: Treatment of Facial Injuries in Children and Adolescents Friday September 15, 15:15 to 16:30 Lee McFadden completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia and started his private practice in Winnipeg Manitoba in 1984. .

Dr. McFadden graduated from the University of Alberta with his DDS in 1978. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba involved with graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as with the graduate Orthodontic training program.

Dr. McFadden is the past President of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Manitoba Dental Association and the Victoria Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Rodrigo Cunha: Endodontic Consideration when Treating Complications due to Dental Trauma Saturday September 16, 14:00 to 15:15 Dr. Cunha completed his Undergraduate Dental Degree in 1994, which he obtained from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Campinas (PUCC) in Campinas, SP-Brazil. His post-graduate studies include a Specialty degree in Endodontics obtained in 1997 from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP); in 2002, a M.Sc. degree in Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics), and in 2006, a Ph.D. degree in Dental Sciences both of which he received from Sao Leopoldo Mandic Centre for Dental Research. Dr. Cunha is an Associate Professor at the College of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba at the Endodontics Division. He has taught at the preclinical and clinical levels; has been a guest speaker at many events worldwide such as Brazil, Argentina, USA, Canada and UAE. Dr. Cunha has published a multitude of papers and abstracts in several peer reviewed journals, six book chapters and is a Reviewer for the International Endodontic Journal (IEJ) and Journal of Endodontics (JOE). Dr. Cunha became Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (Endodontics) in 2013 and has extensive clinical experience obtained working in Private Practice limited to Endodontics since 1995.

I had a very influential lecturer while in undergraduate dentistry at the University of Pretoria, Dr. Birgit Shermann. She had specialized as much as one could in South Africa (pediatric dentistry is not yet a recognized speciality in South Africa) in treating only children, and made me realize there was a great need for dentists who enjoyed treating children and were ready to take the extra time our young patients often need.

Where did you do your training?

My dental degree (1982) is from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. My pediatric dentistry training (1990) was completed at Georgetown University and the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I love working with children, as they tell you how they feel with none of the social cues that adults so often have.

What do you find most challenging?

The high rates of decay that we still find in young children i.e. Early Childhood Caries, after 25+ years in the field I am disappointed that we as a profession have not been able to get out the message of prevention to avoid children suffering from the devastating effects of ECC. What is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric Dentistry?

The number of children with ECC. So many people in the public think that children don’t get cavities anymore!

Industry Involvement. You volunteered to be the Co-Chair of the CAPD/ACDP Vancouver Annual Conference in 2013 and now you are the RCDC Representative to the CAPD/ACDP Executive Committee.

Why do you volunteer?

I have LOVED my career as a pediatric dentist, and to use a cliché, I see volunteering as a way to give back to my profession. I hope that my enthusiasm and volunteering will inspire other dentists to get involved.

Are you involved in other volunteer positions other than those with CAPD/ACDP? Yes, I have always been involved in organized dentistry in some way, likely due to the fact that my mother always told me that to make things better you had better get involved!

Besides the RCDC where I am now on the Executive, I also volunteer as an examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as being the BC representative for the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry (a component society of the American Academy of Pediatric dentistry).

What is your message to Pediatric Dentists (Students, Graduates, Active in the Profession) about the value of volunteering (the value to the individual; the value to the profession)?

I believe that by volunteering/being involved in organized dentistry, you receive far more than you give. I have made life-long friends and have colleagues all over the world who I have met through my involvement with pediatric dentistry. I also believe that your patients enjoy knowing you are “giving back”, and that you will increase your practice size, as parents will seek you out, seeing you as a “leader” in your profession.

Looking at a Crystal Ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or dream about) in the next 30 years?

Likely a growth in group practices as “work-life” balance increases in importance. I also hope that prevention will have “won” and that a “cure” for the overwhelming problem of ECC will have been found, so that children are not still having to undergo surgery to restore and remove teeth before their 3rd birthday!

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

I live on Vancouver Island so there are so many opportunities to relax and unwind – spending time with my husband, Michael (who is very supportive of all my volunteering) golfing, reading, walking our dogs or travelling around this beautiful province and country are all some of the ways I spend my spare time.

DR. ELSA HUI-DERKSEN Chair, Scientific Committee You volunteered to be the Chair of the CAPD/ACDP Scientific Committee.

While the committee has many responsibilities, what do you see as the overall goal of the Committee?

CAPD/ACDP is the national voice of pediatric dentistry in Canada. The overall goal of the Scientific Committee is to support the Executive Committee and the members of the CAPD/ACDP on matters relating to the advancement, standards and practice of pediatric dentistry in Canada.

What should CAPD/ACDP members know/understand about the work of the Scientific Committee?

The Scientific Committee is a group of 8 members and the Chair that works year round to support the CAPD/ACDP Executive Committee. The members of the Scientific Committee have varied experience from academics, private practice and hospital dentistry. The Scientific Committee has a number of roles and responsibilities including the organizing and judging of the 3M Oral Care Graduate Student Research Presentations at the Annual Meeting, reviewing literature and making recommendations to the Executive with respect to evidence-based practice of pediatric dentistry. Additionally, members of the Scientific Committee work hard on reviewing evidence-based literature to provide the best possible clinical practice guidelines and national positions on oral health for the pediatric and special needs population. The Scientific Committee also works with the local organizing committees in recommending topics and speakers at the Annual Conference.

From the perspective of the Scientific Committee, what challenges do you see ahead for Pediatric Dentistry as one of the dental specialties in Canada?

Pediatric dentistry is a speciality that I see is the interconnecting circle, much like the caries process. It involves the child, parent, and practitioner with the goal of providing the best possible oral health for the child.

I think that we live in an era where change is happening very quickly. Accessibility to information is readily at one’s fingertips and parenting styles have changed. I think pediatric dentists face challenges daily with social media and more lenient parenting practices. Traditional techniques of behaviour management are less accepted by parents and there is already a trend towards more advanced behaviour management techniques such as general anesthesia, a resource that is already limited in accessibility.

In general, why do you volunteer? (What do you get out of it?)

I think volunteering is a great opportunity to meet other people, learn and give back to the profession. I like that I am continually improving myself as a pediatric dentist outside the clinical setting and can bring all these experiences and interactions into my daily practice.

Are you involved in other volunteer positions other than those with CAPD/ACDP?

Yes! I am an Examiner with the RCDC and absolutely love being a part of. In the past I have volunteered with the AAPD as a consultant on the New Pediatric Dentist Committee and was on the Executive and the President of the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists.

What is your message to Pediatric Dentists (Students, Graduates, Active in the Profession) about the value of volunteering (the value to individual dentists; the value to the profession)?

Volunteering opens doors in all aspects of life and is a great way to help advance our profession.

Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

I think the path was chosen for me…I have a sibling with a special need and it felt just right. I’m humbled everyday by the opportunity to be a part of a child’s life and their oral health.

Where did you do your training?

Two U of M schools– University of Manitoba and University of Michigan.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

My staff and the patients – they all make me laugh and laughter is the best medicine.

Looking into a Crystal Ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or dream about) in the next 30 years?

To be able to magically numb without “the needle.”

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

I like to relax and unwind by building up a serious sweat and taking my mind elsewhere. I love to run, hike, spin and spend time being a Mom.

The CAPD/ACDP Dr. Norman Levine Undergraduate Dental Student Award consists of one award given annually to each accredited Canadian Faculty of Dentistry for a third or fourth year DDS/DMD student who demonstrates aptitude and passion for the field of pediatric dentistry and/or dentistry for persons with special needs.

The recipient should be nominated by the Undergraduate Pediatric Dentistry director in consultation with the respective faculties’ awards committee. The recipient of this award will receive $200.00 and a certificate.

Dr. Brad Krusky Chair, LOC, 2018 Annual Conference in Banff, Alberta You volunteered to be the Chair of the CAPD/ACDP Banff Annual Conference in 2018. What is your connection with Banff?

Banff is such a magical amazing place that I have always loved and am so excited to be able to share it with my colleagues from across Canada and the US. When I was a child we had a cabin in the mountains and I spent almost every weekend enjoying the outdoors skiing, hiking, biking and exploring. We spend so much time indoors, sitting at a chair every day and being able to get out in the mountains grounds me and gives me the energy I need to do what I do every day. It is an exceptional setting for what will be an inspirational continuing education and professional development experience.

Why should members and other Pediatric Dentists travel to Banff for this event?

There is no other place like Banff in the world. Our conference will give you time to enjoy the outdoors as well as the unbelievable Banff Springs Hotel which is legendary in the Rocky Mountains. We are bringing in top notch speakers and combining that with unique experiences and amazing scenery.

The schedule will allow for additional CE hours, in addition to opportunities to explore the town and learn in a peaceful and beautiful setting.

Why is attendance at the Annual Conference (or other professional events) considered to be a career enhancing move?

I have found that the connections I have made at CAPD Annual Conferences and other CE events have been invaluable in my career. Whether it is other dentists, supply companies or speakers, I have learned many new things and developed a network that I can rely on for many things between meetings.

Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

I have always loved kids and always loved a challenge. My goal is to develop lifelong strong and confident dental patients who learn skills in our office that allow them to conquer other fears outside of the dental chair, throughout their lives. I wanted to have a career where I could give back and help those in need, and this speciality has allowed me to do that through various volunteer dental experiences, both local and abroad.

Where did you do your training?

I completed my DMD at Boston University & my pediatric residency and MSc at the University of Michigan.

What do you enjoy the most about your job? What do you find most challenging?

I enjoy the kids and the challenges associated with behavior management when working in a non-sedation environment. Developing relationships with our patients and their families and constantly improving in the way we communicate and understand each other. Interaction with my colleagues and finding ways to continually improve the service we are providing based on research, developments in materials, and equipment advancements.

The most challenging is the business aspect – we are well-trained for clinical work however most of the practice and business management is literally on-the-job training… learning from our mistakes. Which we have!

What is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric Dentistry?

Several - We only handle special needs kids, patients need a referral, we are only here for the tough work and not continuing care, and we all sedate and utilize general anesthetic frequently. All are difficult misunderstandings which are sometimes insurmountable hurdles to overcome – both with patients and with referring general dentists.

Are you involved in other volunteer positions other than those with CAPD/ACDP? Dentistry For All Director of Operations, former Executive Director Why do you volunteer?

I have a skill set that is in demand and there are children all over the world and in our local communities who have no access to quality care. It is my privilege and responsibility to do what I can to heal the world (Tikum Olam)

What is your message to Pediatric Dentists (Students, Graduates, Active in the Profession) about the value of volunteering (the value to the individual; the value to the profession?)

No one has time to volunteer. We are all busy – family, practice, hobbies…investments… on and on. But we must make the time.

Make it part of your everyday routine right now. Schedule it in. We are privileged here in Canada but there are many right outside our door who cannot say that. Whether you volunteer as a dentist, donate funds or supplies, or help someone else to volunteer – I feel we are obligated to our profession to give back and share our expertise with those in need. I also feel that every pediatric program should provide opportunities for their residents to spend time in volunteer situations in their own communities as well as abroad.

Looking at a Crystal Ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or dream about) in the next 30 years?

Anti-caries medications (such as SDF, only better), vaccines, improvements in local anesthesia, material science, and caries removal.

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

Fresh air…the great outdoors. We live in the foothills West of the City of Calgary, in the gateway to the Rockies. We are minutes from Kananaskis Country, and a short drive to Canmore and Banff National Park. Walking in the woods is my favorite thing to do – whether it’s a day hike or cross country ski with my wife Danni, a multi-day backcountry guys hiking trip, or simply strolling in the woods in my back yard with my kids. I love what Mother Nature has to offer and the further away from a cell phone the better! I’m also a lover of local craft beer so that helps in relaxing situations quite often!

Purpose Review proposed changes to the Constitution, by-laws and Rules and Regulations.

 Act, through the student reps at each Canadian Graduate training program as their contacts with the academy. This may involve the dissemination of information to the students, answering any questions from the students, and acting as the students advocate with the academy. Administration and awarding of the Dr. Keith Titley scholarship. Creating the criteria, and implementing the new Dr. Norman Levine undergraduate prize at the Canadian dental Schools.  We are the go to people for the students if they have any questions or concerns  Engage students in the US that might not be aware of the benefits of CAPD/ACDP membership and of being part of the Canadian pediatric dental community.

To propose future meeting cities to the Executive Council, suggest candidates to Chair the Local Organizing Committee, review the LOC guidelines from time to time and ensure that recommendations from previous meetings are documented.

To coordinate the venues, educational program, local activities, entertainment and schedule for the Annual Meeting in consultation with the Executive Director, with the assistance of the Director of Operations, Executive Secretary and Chair of the Scientific Committee.

The Oral Health Section advocates for and promotes optimal oral health for infants, children and adolescents, including children and youth with special health care needs. This section also provides expertise and guidelines for children and youth with special health care needs through a number of programs including the provision of a forum for discussion of important child and youth dental health issues between the CPS and the CAPD/ACDP Committee of the CDA that examines topics and comes up with knowledge based position statements and guidelines that are recommended to the CDA Board for approval.

Ad Hoc Committee of the CDA with a mandate to look at access to care for seniors, notably in LTC and in access to care for infants, notably the age one visit. This is resulting in the campaign to both dentists and the public on the “First Tooth, First Visit – a time to celebrate”.

To insure an ongoing relationship with 3M Oral Care and their sponsorship of the 3M Oral Care CAPD/ACDP Graduate Training Presentation Awards The Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) is the body responsible for accrediting dental, dental specialty, dental residency, dental hygiene and dental assisting education programs in Canada. CDAC also accredits dental services. In Quebec, dental services accredited by ODQ are recognized by CDAC The International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) is a non-profit organization with the objective to contribute to the progress and promotion of oral health for children around the globe. IAPD includes 60 National Member Societies and represents more than 15,000 dentists.
