The Fort Garry Hotel is a designated historic site. Now in its 10th decade, this former Grand Trunk Pacific Railway hotel is one of Winnipeg’s most prestigious landmarks. The “Chateaustyle” architecture with steep roof lines, expansive wall surfaces, turrets, ornatelydecorated windows and lavish ornamentation, is recognized internationally as distinctly Canadian. In 1913 the hotel was to be called “The Selkirk”, but was instead named The Fort Garry, after Upper Fort Garry which once stood at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in the area called The Forks (a 15 minute walk). The special hotel rate is valid until August 14th, if rooms are still available.
