RENO TAHOE SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

Heavy snowfall and majestic mountains make Reno Tahoe the perfect destination for any skier or snowboarder. From ski resorts that focus on lessons for beginners to some of the steepest, most advanced terrain on the West Coast, the region is a historic ski destination. Did you know Squaw Valley was the home to the 1960 Winter Olympics and that athletes from the area often bring home Olympic medals each year? Discover endless adrenaline and scenic views as you ski or snowboard through the fresh powder, groomed runs and epic terrain. With an average of 300 days of sun per year, Tahoe skiing and snowboarding is hard to beat. The surrounding ski resorts offer more than just a typical ski day. With the slopes as close as 25 minutes from downtown Reno, and most within an

hour’s drive, you’ll be able to maximize your day while staying in the city. That means you can fly into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport in the morning and be on a chairlift in the afternoon. And because you’ll love Tahoe skiing so much, the Reno hotel casinos make stay-and-ski packages as accommodating as possible with some of the lowest room rates in the area. Prefer cross-country skiing? Many area ski resorts offer a variety of trails to keep you entertained during your stay. Never cross the same trail twice, unless you want to. So what will it be? Are you a downhill junkee or looking for a relaxing afternoon among the trees and snow?

letter from the publisher Wayne Hansen, Senior Editor

THE REINVENTION OF RENO: THE ‘WORLD’S BIGGEST LITTLE CITY’ Reno, a town known for gambling, divorce and long-dead silver mines, is turning its luck around. Cocktail bars and farm-to-table restaurants are breaking with the city’s seedy past, art galleries are tapping into newfound creative energy. Reno has always lived under the shadow of its bigger-but-younger sibling down south. For the past few decades, the Biggest Little City’s status as a gambling and divorce destination has waned as Las Vegas sold the package deal of dice, glamour and showgirls, and divorces became easier to attain across the US. For a while, Reno’s future seemed destined to become another of the ghost towns that dot the Nevada desert. But these days there’s more going on. Reno’s emerging artists - Reno’s art scene has never been better. With an ambitious art program at the local university and 23 major galleries in Reno, there’s no lack of local talent and venues to display their work. Food and drink from the source - Where Vegas seeks international ingredients and chefs, Reno finds locally. New restaurants are popping up all over town, with chefs who source ingredients from area farms and ranches. Nowhere is Reno’s craft food and drink movement better seen than on East 4th St. This block of once-blighted warehouses and empty brick shells is turning into a source of the city’s best tipples and

treats. Housed in the former train station, The Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery features a menu of pub food with a creative twist (try the fish and chips with malt aioli), plus a lengthy list of house-made beers and spirits. Just down the street, Under the Rose Brewing Company brews European-style beers, like its earthy and spicy French-style farmhouse saison. This district is the place to be for craft beer drinkers. Gateway to the great outdoors - Reno’s access to the great outdoors makes it the perfect gateway for nature lovers, but there’s adventure to be had right in the middle of downtown. BaseCamp, the Whitney Peak Hotel’s new rock climbing gym, is luring climbers to its 7000 sq ft indoor climbing space. Beginners and pros are welcome to test their grip strength at the indoor bouldering park, or try their hands at the 164ft climbing wall outside – the largest in the world. Also downtown, the Truckee River Whitewater Park provides kayakers with a half-mile, heart-pounding waterway containing class II and III rapids.

In summer, cruise into the lake’s crystal-clear waters aboard a kayak or paddleboard. If that’s a little too pedestrian, clip into the bike ride of a lifetime on the Flume Trail, a vertigo-inducing mountain bike trail that hugs the side of Lake Tahoe’s steepest peaks.

Nearby Lake Tahoe has enough year-round adventure to soothe even the gnarliest of adrenaline junkies. Perhaps Tahoe is best known for its excellent skiing, but area resorts and businesses have been tapping into summer activities like obstacle courses and stand-up paddleboarding, turning it into a year-round destination.

Reno/Ta The Gateway to Nevada A Reno has a compact clutch of big casinos in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada. It has a reputation for being a ‘poor man’s Vegas,’ but while in some ways that cap fits, we’re here to set the record straight: Reno is oh, so much more. Beyond the garish downtown, with its photoworthy mid-century modern architecture, neon signs and alpinefed Truckee River, sprawls a city of parks and pretty houses inhabited by a friendly bunch eager to welcome you.

The dazzling lights of flashy Las Vegas have outshined their northwestern neighbor – “The Biggest Little City” – for several decades. But Reno is resurging, offering

its visitors a broader spectrum of entertainment than it did in the past, especially for nongambling travelers. Now, there’s a lively arts scene lining the downtown area’s Riverwalk, which boasts dozens of independently owned galleries, boutiques, restaurants and more. There’s even an eco-friendly boutique hotel (one of the only nongambling, nonsmoking properties in downtown Reno) that boasts the world’s tallest artificial climbing wall. The city is also reclaiming its title as the “Gateway to Nevada Adventure.” With the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe about an hour’s drive to the south and the hiking trails of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west and south, active travel-

ers will find no shortage of heartpumping activities.

But despite a citywide revitalization that’s attracting tech startups and big data companies (take a stroll along Startup Row – on First Street between Virginia Street and Washington Street), Reno remains first and foremost a gambler’s hangout. It can’t compare to its glamorous sibling (Sin City), but Reno does offer a bevy of slot machines and table games, all-youcan-eat buffets, cabaret shows and more for those who come to test Lady Luck.

Where to eat in Reno Much like Vegas, Reno boasts 6

Tahoe Adventure

plenty of all-you-can-eat buffets and upscale steakhouses, but it also offers some unique local eateries serving farm-fresh dishes. Whether it’s for a first date or an anniversary dinner, there are many romantic restaurants to choose from in Reno. Start your evening off with a few cocktails (from their massive martini menu) at Roxy’s Bar & Lounge at the Eldorado or an aperitivo at Calafuria in Midtown. Choose from steak and lobster at the Atlantis Steakhouse or classic Italian dishes from La Strada. If you want to try a few independent restaurants, visit Beaujolais Bistro near the Truckee River for their elegant French dishes and wonderful wine. If you want more French cuisine, chez louie inside the Nevada Museum of Art will give you two dates in one. Centro Bar + Kitchen in the CalAve District and the Wild River Grille near the Reno Riverwalk offer twists on comfort food. For a really special occasion, save up some money and head to LuLou’s for their creative menu and eclectic dishes like grilled duck breast and carmelized sunchokes in truffle oil.

When you need a break from casino dining, locals and visitors suggest trying Campo, an Italian eatery best known for its wood-fired pizzas and tasty pasta dishes. Or, if you’re in search of some healthy, light fare after too many steaks and buffets, head to Great Full Gardens. If its name didn’t give it away, Great Full Gardens features a menu of healthy dishes, many that are gluten-free or vegan. Plus, many of the ingredients come from local farms, as well as the restaurant’s own greenhouse. If you’re looking for more seasonal, locally sourced fare, consider 4th St. Bistro, which receives praise for its extensive wine list. Stealing a piece of California’s tech-pie, the gargantuan Tesla Gigafactory will open its doors here in 2020, bringing plenty of cashedup youngsters to town, and Reno is ready: the transformation of the formerly gritty Midtown District continues, injecting a dose of funky new bars, top-notch restaurants and vibrant arts spaces into Reno’s already unique and eclectic mix. If you like pleasant surprises or just go for the underdog, chances are you’ll love Reno.

Why Go to Lake Tahoe Incredible, extraordinary, mindboggling … try as you might, you’ll have difficulty finding words that do justice to the sheer beauty of Lake Tahoe. Resting on the California-Nevada border, Lake Tahoe has long been a favourite vacation spot, welcoming upward of 2.7 million people a year. Visitors are drawn here by the steep granite cliff sides and towering mountaintops, as well as the crystal-clear waters that have earned Lake Tahoe the reputation of being one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the United States. While the stunning blue lake alone is worth a trip, the surrounding area, also known as Lake Tahoe, boasts miles of hiking trails, dozens of picture-perfect vistas and some of the best skiing in North America. But wait – there’s more. Lake Tahoe seems to have adopted the major traits of its neighbors. You’ll

find San Francisco-style high-end shopping and dining along the lake’s north shore, while opportunities to test your luck reside in the south shore’s Reno-esque casinos. You’ll also find plenty of activities that Lake Tahoe is proud to take credit for, including mountain gondola rides, hot air balloon adventures and scenic cruises across the mirror-like water.

Getting Around Lake Tahoe The best way to get around Lake Tahoe is by car. Because there are more than 70 miles of shoreline at just the lake alone, you’ll find that having your own set of wheels will be most convenient. You can rent a car at the Reno/Tahoe International Airport (RNO) about 50 miles northeast of Tahoe City. To get from the airport to your accommodations in Tahoe, you can rent a car, take a cab (ride-hailing ser-

vices, Uber and Lyft, also operate in the area) or hop on a shuttle. The South Tahoe Airporter offers frequent trips between the Reno airport and six resorts in South Lake Tahoe for less than $30 per person one way. Meanwhile, the North Lake Tahoe Express offers service between the Reno airport and the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee region for less than $50 per person one way. Reno/Tahoe is a premier fourseason destination with countless traveler opportunities, including golf, ski, exciting art and cultural activities and historical attractions, in addition to the gaming and entertainment for which the region is traditionally known. One visit and you’ll return again and again. For more information visit: www.

SHASTA CASCADE The region of Shasta Cascade, also known as UpState CA, and Redding offers an experience of both nature and man-made architectural marvels. Take a quick tour of a few highlights. A visiting to Redding will not be complete without seeing the Sundial Bridge. This glass decked, cablestayed cantilever suspension bridge reaches 217 feet into the sky, spans 710 feet across the Sacramento River, and forms a working sundial. It crosses the river without touching the water, and is surfaced with translucent glass, illuminated from beneath and glows aquamarine at night. Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. The national park is known for its volcanic history and boasts over 700 species of flowering plants and 250 spe-

cies of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park showcases a 129-foot scenic waterfall ranked among the best in California. Nearby activities include golf, hunting, shooting, fishing, boating, birding, hiking, horseback riding, photography, history and more. Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark is a geologic adventure with possible sightings of bald eagles, mountain lions, black bears, tiny cave coral, and gravity defying helicities to magnificent cave drapery. Shasta Dam is a curved gravity dam across the Sacramento River along with several other rivers which creates Shasta Lake. The dam generates hydroelectric power and at 602 feet high, is the ninth-tallest dam in the United States and forms the largest reservoir in California. Tours comprise a 428foot elevator ride to the base of the

dam, into the dam’s inner galleries and the powerhouse among other areas. Our last stop is Shasta Lake, a 30,000-acre/12,140-hectare reservoir, the largest in California. A typical summer day finds the crystal blue waters sprinkled with fishing boats, jet skis, inner tubes—almost anything that floats, especially houseboats. Overlooked by Mt. Shasta’s perennially snow-capped peak, one finds rentals from marinas and resorts, from basic models to multi-tiered, floating palaces, with whirlpool spas, gourmet kitchens, and master suites with flat-screen TVs. With so much more to see and do, the City of Redding and Shasta Cascade is perfect for a short getaway or an extended stay. See their booth at the Vancouver International Travel Expo, at the Vancouver Convention Centre, September 29th.

GO RVING WITH O’CONNOR RV So summer is over and the kids are back to school, the temperature gauge is dropping, and the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. In other words, perfect time for an RV vacation. Across British Columbia, the number of camping destinations with RV Parks and campgrounds offering year-round camping opportunities is growing. Vancouver Island, Thompson Okanagan and the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains regions have the mildest temperatures and offer the greatest choice for winter camping in BC. Unlike the prime summer months where rates are the highest, weekly and monthly rates are now cheaper, and parks are offering quieter RV sites in a predominantly adult environment. Many year-round RV Parks and Resorts have a clubhouse where Snowbirds can mingle for pot luck suppers and other events. Walking trails, local attractions and other activities are usually close by. O’Connor RV has a selection of RV units to suit every type of snowbird and off season vacationer, like their RiverStone 5th wheeler,

that’s only available at O’Connor RV. Boasting stainless steel kitchen sinks and a stainless steel dishwasher, it also comes equipped with a 60” TV, Induction Heat Counter Top, and a fireplace in the bedroom for those colder fall and winter nights. At last count, at least 61 Campgrounds are available across BC for the fall/ winter months, extending as far north as Charlie Lake RV in Fort St John, east to Fernie RV Resort in Fernie, south to

Fort Victoria RV Park in Victoria, and west to Crystal Cove Beach Resort, Tofino. The time is right if you already own an RV, to get it winterized. Call the O’Connor RV’s service department to find out how. Or if you don’t own one, drop in to see the many specials that are available for motorhomes, fifth wheels and travel trailers, so you can hit the road in both comfort and reliability and make British Columbia your Canadian winter camping destination of choice!

Xi’an and the Terra Cotta Warriors Huangdi. All of this is testament to the idiosyncrasies of this man who united ancient China, established its first dynasty, began construction of the Great Wall, and was so powerful that he could order up a burial necropolis for himself that took 700,000 men many decades to complete. Reportedly, everyone involved in the construction was killed in order to preserve the secrets of the site. It has often been said that “if you have not been to Xi’an, you have not been to China!”

Xi’an – An amazing city you can’t miss – Xi’an is famous as a tourist city whose constant history has been responsible for its magnificent culture. It’s treasure house of cultural relics is inexhaustible. Xi’an has a uniquely glamourous night life. Visitors will surely enjoy the night scenery around the Bell Tower and participate in a Tang Dynasty Dinner Show. To watch the music fountain performance while strolling on the ancient Big Wild Goose Pagoda Square is a romantic experience by itself. Here, one can also sing in the KTV or hang out in a bar if not dancing in a disco. The next day one can then savour the beauty of China’s greatest archeological excavation, the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses.

The Terra Cotta Warriors is an amazing 7,000-man army of life-sized foot soldiers, officers, war chariots and kneeling archers spread out four abreast in row after row in pits that lay buried for more than 2,000 years under farm fields until discovered in the early 1970’s by peasants digging a well. Three pits, the largest covering an area the size of a football field and a half, have been roofed and air-conditioned and have become one of the most visited tourism sites in China. The army is very likely only a small part of what still lies under a vast expanse of farmlands and several villages that make up the huge necropolis surrounding the still to be excavated mound under which is known to be the actual tomb of Emperor Qin Shi 27

what’s cooking ABOUT KOREAN FOOD Korean food is some of the healthiest on earth, with an emphasis on vegetables, meats cooked simply and without much oil, and a near obsesson with the fermented vegetable kimchi. Much of the food that exists in Korea today and the customs surrounding it have come from royal cuisine and the complex customs of the ancient court. The food is a study in balance with careful consideration given to temperature, spiciness, colour and texture along with considered presentation. Starting with ritual bowls of rice and soup, the main meal is built around numerous shared side dishes selected to complement each other. The number of side dishes may vary from two to a dozen or more but everyday meals will include at least a few. All dishes are served at once to share, rather than in courses. A Korean banquet consists of many dishes cooked in various ways, including being steamed and simmered, panfried and stewed, fermented and raw. Another cornerstone of Korean food is rice, which forms the backbone of almost every meal, although is sometimes replaced with noodles. Because Korea is a peninsula, seafood is also very popular.

The Koreans have perfected the art of preserving food, so many side dishes are picked, fermented or salted and many are spicy. Kimchi, Korea’s famous spicy cabbage, which has over a hundred varieties using different vegetables, is a constant of every meal. It is adored for its sour tangy crunch as well as being a digestive aid. Other popular spices and sauces include: sesame and sesame oil, chilli pepper paste (kochujang), soybean paste (daenjang), garlic, ginger and chilli pepper flakes. Korean food tends to be intensely flavoured, spicy and pungent. Traditional restaurants often feature charcoal grills in the middle of the table - a type of indoor barbecue. Paper-thin slices of marinated meat (bulgogi – literally “fire meat”) or beef ribs (kalbi) are grilled, cut into pieces, and wrapped in lettuce leaves with garlic, chilli and soybean paste. They’re eaten in one bite as it’s considered the height of rudeness to bite into a lettuce parcel. Koreans also place great importance on the role of food as medicine, using exotic ingredients such as dried persimmon, red dates (jujube), pine seeds, chestnut, gingko, tangerine and ginseng in their cooking and also in specially brewed teas. 28

Talk Time Travel: by James Corea

Picture it, Singapore, 2054, the near future, similar to what you would have seen in the movie Minority Report. That is the feeling you get when you visit Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. At the time of its construction in 2010, it was viewed as the world’s most expensive stand-alone casino property at $8 billion, including the land cost. This strikingly ambitious and fully realized architectural marvel in form, function and creative design was inspired by Card Decks, prominently featuring the three hotel towers, which have 2,500 rooms and suites, and a continuous lobby at the base links the three towers. The resort’s architecture and major design changes along the way were also approved by feng shui consultants. The three towers are connected by a 1 hectare roof terrace, Sands SkyPark, which is what transports the visitor to a futuristic utopia. The SkyPark boasts the world’s longest elevated swimming pool, basically a 146-metre infinity pool, 191 metres above ground. Imagine gazing across the views from this observation point

Country: Singapore Description: Futuristic Accommodations Period: Later 21st Century

including Marina Bay, the Supertree Grove, and the Gardens by the Bay. 12 of these world famous supertrees can be found in Garden by the Bay, with the tallest reaching some 16 storeys high. Maybe it can be used in the next Avatar movie. If you’d like to party like its 2099, then the SkyPark also has rooftop nightclubs, hundreds of trees and plants, and a public observatory deck on the cantilever with 360-degree views of the Singapore skyline. And as if to completely disorient the space time continuum, this futuristically designed marvel throws you for a loop and has installed Venetian styled canals, to harken back to between the 13th and 18th century origins of the original city. The canals run through the length of the Shoppes and one can hitch a ride along the canal on a Sampan, a flat bottomed wooden Chinese boat. As if to put an exclamation mark on the whole futuristic angle, Marina Sands has a permanent show, as of September 1st called, wait for it….Future World. This show as described by its creators “takes visitors on an exciting journey of discovery through

these key narratives – Nature , Town , Sanctuary, Park and Space. Read more at https://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/future-world. html#9tUCvtOIJOykDiCf.99

Marine Bay Sands has already been a feature in major motion pictures, including its destruction in the recent Independent Day: Resurgence, as well as the currently in theatres, Crazy Rich Asians. If something deeper than pop culture attracts you then the ArtScience Museum awaits. Shaped like a lotus flower, the innovative construction has a retractable roof that creates a waterfall from collected rainwater when closed and flows into a reflective pond, and then opens up to a laser show at night. A visit to Singapore already offers a feast for foodies, excitement for explorers, adventure for action seekers, and the scene for socialisers. For the Time Traveller, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel offers an escape to an era that Tom Cruise would run to and not from. And that’s your Majority Report. 30
