Auto shopping for teens: Three cars for new drivers By Dee-Ann Durbin The Associated Press

That’s because they’re big enough to handle the impact of a crash but nimble enough to steer out of trouble. “A great big car like the Crown Victoria is a potent machine in a straight line. many people prefer all-wheeldrive in snowy weather, it can give kids a false sense of security and encourage them to drive too fast in hazardous conditions. On the car’s interior, look for cars with simple controls that don’t require drivers to take their eyes off the road. Hands-free calling systems may be helpful, although they can still be a distraction. Price is a factor, of course, especially since adding a teen to your auto insurance can easily cost several thousand dollars a year. McCartt said used cars from recent model years — with all of the safety features of current models — are a good choice for teens. The Insurance Institute lists its top safety picks for each year back to 2006 on its website, so that’s one place parents can find the safest cars from any given year. Results of U.S. government crash tests back to 1990 are also available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. Here are three new midsize cars, all under $20,000, that Champion recommends for teen drivers. All are Insurance Institute top safety picks for 2011, and all have estimated annual fuel costs of around $2,000, which is average for a midsize car. n Volkswagen Jetta The 2011 Jetta starts at $16,495, significantly less than most of its midsize competition. Among its standard safety features is a crash response system that automatically unlocks the doors, cuts the flow of gas and turns on the hazard lights when it senses a crash. The lowestpriced model gets 29 miles per gallon, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A diesel version gets better mileage, but will cost you around $6,000 more. Although the Jetta is one of the Insurance Institute’s top picks, it didn’t earn the highest five-star rating from the government because of its lower scores in rollover and frontal crash tests.

When choosing a car for your new teen driver, David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ auto test division, recommends cars with four-cylinder engines and critical safety features such as the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, top, the 2011 Kia Optima, middle, and the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, bottom. n Kia Optima
The 2011 Optima starts at $19,200. Among its standard safety features are two sets of side air bags: One comes down from the ceiling and covers the windows and one comes out of the front seats to protect the lower body. It also includes Bluetooth technology, which lets drivers make hands-free phone calls. The Optima gets 34 miles per gallon. n Hyundai Sonata The 2011 Hyundai Sonata, which went on sale in the spring of 2010, starts at $19,395. It has a brake assist system that automatically applies the full brakes if it senses emergency braking,
and traction control, which helps drivers on slick or icy roads. The Sonata gets 35 miles per gallon. There is a hybrid version that offers slightly better fuel economy, but it costs $6,000 more. Regardless of what you choose, make sure kids follow your state’s graduated licensing laws, which may mandate supervised training periods, curfews or cell-phone bans. Those laws have been proven to reduce injuries and deaths. Also, practice safe driving habits yourself. “If you talk on the phone while you’re driving, your teen will think that’s OK, too,” Champion said.
MIAMI — Mouthwash. Comfy robe. Sewing kit. BMW? Hotels increasingly are offering a new amenity: access to luxury cars. The Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne, hosted a fleet of new BMWs available for guests to test-drive for up to three hours. Fairmont Turnberry Isle in Aventura, shuttles VIPs in a Jaguar XJL. Miami’s Epic Hotel has hosted special events showcasing exotic roadsters including Ferraris and Lamborghinis. “When we put a Jaguar out front, it’s subliminal advertising to a degree, because it’s sitting right there for all our members and all our guests to see every day,” said David Feder, managing director of Fairmont Turnberry Isle. The shiny speed machines look good parked in front of the lobby, sure, but they’re also a sales pitch from auto dealers and manufacturers to well-heeled (but hopefully not lead-footed) guests. “It’s product placement both ways,” said Chekitan Dev, a professor of marketing and brand management at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. “Car companies want to get in front of these people because they have money to spend. The hotel is also trying to place its product in front of the car.” The Ritz-Carlton BMW Driving Tour is an annual rollout of new vehicles at a handful of Ritz-Carlton properties. This year, it started in Key Biscayne just as Joe Elyas, a New York City art gallery owner, was wrapping up his honeymoon. Elyas, 40, was more than happy to be placed in front of the product. Make that products, plural: BMW let guests testdrive eight cars, includ-

A vacationing Joe Elyas, of New York, checks out the BMW 335 IS M convertible as BMW event coordinator Mike White, top, points out the car’s features in Key Biscayne. Hotels are rolling out car service as an added amenity. At the Ritz-Carlton on Key Biscayne, guests can check out a BMW for three hours free of charge. ing the MINI Cooper, the Z4 sports car, convertibles, sedans and a sports activity coupe. “The Cooper is the most fun car,” said Elyas, who quickly formed a two-testdrives-a-day habit. “I’d like to take out the Z4 again. That car is ridiculous.” Elyas said he was not in the market for a new car before the trip. But he thinks he might be now, and has been researching the various cars online since he started the test drives. “These guys picked the right clientele,” he said. Stacy Morris, marketing communications manager for BMW of North America, calls the six-year partnership between Ritz-Carlton and BMW a “perfect brand fit.” The tour arrived in Key Biscayne last year. BMW assumes all liability and has staffers on hand to gas the cars up, keep them in good shape and show drivers how to use their features. Test drivers must have a valid license, be at least 21 and be a guest of the hotel. Hotel general manager Derek Flint said there were no mishaps last year aside
from a couple of speeding stops and one man who ran out of gas. While the promotion likely doesn’t drive many people to book rooms at the hotel, he said, the benefit comes from enhanced guest satisfaction. “The feedback is great,” he said. “And we’re connected to that.” Morris wouldn’t release figures of sales connected to the marketing initiative, but said Ritz guests do sometimes end up as BMW owners. Boston resident Nicole Richer, who stayed at the Key Biscayne Ritz-Carlton last year, was interested in trading up from her Jeep Liberty when she and her husband took the BMW X6 out for a run, and then a few spins more. By the end of their stay, they were experts on installing their daughter’s car seat, programming the GPS and using the entertainment system. “It was pretty much sold,” said Nicole Richer, who works in construction management. She bought the luxury sports activity coupe in August.

Whining, balky truck needs a fresh starter By Brad Bergholdt McClatchy-Tribune Newspapers
QUESTION: My truck has begun to make a really strange sound sometimes when I try to start it. The normal sound of the starter is replaced by a high pitched zinging sound, and the engine doesn’t start. If I try starting it several times, it usually catches and the engine starts. What’s up with this? —Adam Heller ANSWER: This is an easy one! It appears from your description that the drive,
an internal component of the starter, is beginning to fail. The starter drive assembly, a renewable part within the starter, contains the starter’s pinion gear and a oneway clutch. When in operation, the pinion gear pushes forward to engage teeth on the engine’s flywheel or flex plate, providing a gear reduction in the neighborhood of 20 to 1. This means the starter spins at about 20 times the speed of the engine (about 200 rpm to 4000 rpm) while cranking. The one-way clutch within the drive allows the starter
to drive the engine, but prevents the engine from driving the starter. Why the clutch? If the starter didn’t disengage from the engine upon startup, either due to operator error or mechanical or electrical failure, the starter would be spun to perhaps 30,000 rpm or faster, resulting in a huge electrical nightmare and possibly an explosion. When driven, the starter becomes a generator providing a sizeable and unregulated power source; it could even come apart due to the very high rotational speed.
The starter drive’s oneway clutch is more specifically called an overrunning clutch. This device resembles a roller bearing with ramps that allow the rollers to freewheel in one direction but wedge in the other. Bicycles use an overrunning clutch in the rear hub to allow you to pedal when desired, regardless of bike speed. If an overrunning clutch becomes worn or mechanically sticky, it may slip when it’s supposed to drive. In the case of your starter, this results in a very fast or “unloaded” starter
spin, as it’s not driving the engine. Subsequent starting attempts may be successful due to heat-up or jarring of the rollers, but not for long. Depending on the starter, the drive may be serviceable — the cost is perhaps $30 — but renewing just this part may be penny-wise, poundfoolish as opposed to installing a remanufactured starter assembly. Other internal starter parts may also be nearing retirement, and you’d be paying for disassembly and reassembly time, in addition to the labor to
replace any parts. Remanufactured starters can be a little spooky in quality. I’d opt for a bigname brand or look for a local rebuilder with a good reputation among repair shops. They all come with a replacement warranty, but labor reimbursement is likely not provided. — Brad Bergholdt is an automotive technology instructor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, Calif. Big questions await Chevy as it Consumer Reports lists prepares to make next Impala top-rated cars – from 1957 By Mark Phelan McClatchy Newspapers
Chevrolet faces big questions about its biggest car as it prepares to build the nextgeneration Impala. The auto industry and consumers appear to be moving away from cars like the Impala, a large, frontwheel drive sedan, Chevy announced recently that it will build the next Impala at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant that already builds the Volt and will soon begin producing the 2013 Malibu midsize sedan. The new Impala should hit the road in 2013, but much about the car remains a mystery. The Impala is one of GM’s best-selling cars — second only to the Chevy Malibu in U.S. sales last year, trailing only the Malibu and Cruze this year. Despite that, it gets little respect. “It’s in a dying segment,” said analyst Rebecca Lindland of IHS Automotive. “Midsize cars have gotten better and bigger, while large crossovers have
squeezed the market for utilitarian large front-wheel drive family cars from the upper end.” The Impala rides on a platform that’s nearly 20 years old. Even with a number of updates over the years, it’s out of date. The Impala’s engines and transmission are among the oldest GM offers. Yet Impala remains a great value for customers who measure a car’s worth by the size of its passenger compartment and trunk. The Impala is the king of cubicfeet-per-dollar. That’s much of the reason the car got so old. Chevy couldn’t figure out how to offer that much space in a similarly priced new car, so it kept building the Impala. Unfortunately for GM, some customers almost certainly decided to buy Impalas instead of Chevy’s smaller, more advanced and more profitable Malibu midsize sedan. They’re going to fix that with the next Impala. It’ll still be big, but it’ll sell
in smaller numbers — by design. The next Impala will be a thoroughly modern vehicle with contemporary looks, up — to-date technology and a higher price. The Malibu is Chevy’s volume play in the familycar business. The plan mirrors what Ford did with the Taurus and Fusion a couple of years ago. The Taurus got bigger and more expensive, and the midsize Fusion went on to win awards and set sales records. GM faces another challenge with the new Impala. It will share some of its engineering with the upcoming Cadillac XTS luxury sedan, which aims to compete with Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Using the same architecture for a world-class luxury car and a big sedan with a base price under $30,000 is risky. If GM succeeds, Chevy will have its best big car in decades. If it fails, Chevrolet and Cadillac will face a new set of questions about their big cars.

I recently stumbled upon three issues of Consumer Reports’ auto ratings reports, dating from 1957 through 1959. I leafed through the 1957 issue with wonder. These cars, now considered collectible, were new then. What did Consumer Reports think of them? Since all cars were large, the ratings were broken up by price into four groups. Chevrolet topped the first group, low-priced cars ($2,253 to $2,631). Tagged a best buy, the Chevy 210 drew praise for its exceptional power, good fuel economy, precise handling, rattle-free body and quiet running. But CR disliked its hard ride. At the other end of the group was Studebaker; the Commander, President and Champion models were judged to be poorly built and “burdensome to drive.”
Group 2, lower medium-priced cars ($2,727 to $3,178), saw Oldsmobile’s Rocket 88 lead the ratings. Testers thought the car was well-engineered, powerful, roomy, reliable and well-built, although styling hindered the 88’s practicality. As you might have guessed, the Studebaker President, the brand’s topof-the-line model, came in last for the same reasons as the rest of the line. A more powerful version of the Oldsmobile, the Super 88, led group 3, upper medium-priced cars ($3,212-$3,849), for much the same reason as it led group two. At the bottom of the heap was the Packard Clipper. The onceproud brand had become little more than a Studebaker President with Packard trim — and we know what the magazine thought about Studebaker. The car Packard once competed with, the Cadillac 62 , led Con sum er Reports’ high-priced car group ($4,054-$5,614). Its
quiet cabin, build quality and high resale value earned the rating, but testers found the Lincoln Capri’s handling and performance superior, while the Chrysler Imperial had a better ride. The Buick Roadmaster came in last i n th is group, ma i n ly because of its overly soft ride and indifferent build quality. Interestingly, there’s also an article on foreign sports cars, of which the magazine said that “most cost less than a Cadillac. They’re half the size and twice the fun.” While CR made no recommendations, there was a photo of the Jaguar XK 140. In some ways, this magazine proves the old saying about antique cars: What’s popular new will be popular when it turns old. This magazine proves it. — Larry Printz is automotive editor at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. He can be reached at larry. printzpilotonline.com.

Car engines shrink under pressure to sip gas, lower emissions By Jerry Hirsch McClatchy Newspapers
LOS ANGELES — When it comes to cars, four is the new six. Stung by high gas prices, more Americans are seeking cars that can get 30 to 40 miles a gallon. And automakers, facing tougher federal fuel economy standards, are eager to meet that demand. Four-cylinder engines now account for about 65 percent of all cars built in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, up from 48 percent five years ago. Six-cylinder vehicle production slipped to 25 percent from nearly 40 percent. The shift marks one of the biggest transitions since the 1980s, when domestic car buyers traded in their big V-8s for smaller six-cylinder power plants. More than a third of the cars U.S. consumers are buying from Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. so far this year are powered by four-cylinder engines. That’s almost double what people bought from GM in 2008, and more than a 70-percent gain among Ford customers. Within five years, about half the vehicles sold in the United States will be powered by four-cylinder engines, said Joe Bakaj, Ford’s global powertrain chief. It won’t be long before four-cylinder engines start to see competition from even smaller engines, especially as federal fuel economy standards become more stringent and gas prices
stay high. Ford on Thursday announced that it will launch a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine. Japanese automakers aren’t exempt from the trend. These companies, which pushed bigger engines in recent years, are finding that more customers want the fuel efficiency of fourcylinder motors. The Honda Accord was once an exclusively fourcylinder-engine car, but by 2000 about a third of all Honda Accords sold in the U.S. were equipped with a V-6. Now V-6 engines account for just 18 percent of Accord sales. Similarly, sales of V-6 Toyota Camrys have plunged to less than 9 percent this year from around 20 percent for much of the past decade. BMW stopped selling four-cylinder engines in the U.S. more than a decade ago, thinking they didn’t fit the profile of its luxury buyers. Now it will offer a four in the new Z4 sports car that goes on sale this year. “The world today is very different from the world of the 1990s,” said BMW spokesman Tom Kowaleski. Jessica Bennett of Los Angeles is an example of that change. Bennett grew up driving gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs in her native Nashville. But this month the 24-yearold professional stuntwoman traded in her Jeep Liberty SUV with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine for a puny 1.6-liter Ford Fiesta sedan. “I was skeptical about whether I would like the

car. I am a stunt girl. I like to go fast. I like things with power,” Bennett said. But the Fiesta’s miserly fuel consumption — it can go more than 30 miles on a gallon of gas — plus a design that allows her to pack swords and other stunt equipment in the back prompted her to make the move. “We were getting just 12 miles to the gallon in the Jeep. We have had the Fiesta for two weeks and we filled it up just once,” Bennett said. The new generation of fourcylinder engines also packs more punch. BMW’s new 2.0-liter engine, for example, will develop more horsepower than the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine it replaces. For decades, auto companies have pushed bigger as better with the motto “There
is no replacement for displacement.” Baby boomers and older generations most likely had their first encounter with the four-cylinder engine when the Volkswagen Beetle made its way to the U.S. in the 1960s. It was so underpowered that the car felt as if it was braking when the driver took the foot off the gas pedal. Later, a flood of Japanesebuilt Toyota, Honda and Datsun (now Nissan) cars and trucks entered the U.S. market. Although often criticized for their lack of power, the vehicles caught on because they offered low prices, reliability and fuel efficiency. Now automakers are encouraging the move to smaller engines, in part because federal fuel economy standards will require the combined industrywide fleet to average 34.1 mpg by the 2016 model year. They are packing the smaller vehicles with the types of options — navigation, sophisticated sound systems, leather seating — once reserved for fancier autos as a way to raise transaction prices and preserve profits. Even so, they are butting heads with some consumers whom the industry had previously convinced that cars equipped with small engines were weak and not much fun to drive. So although BMW will make four cylinders standard for its new Z4, it will still offer a V-6 as an option. “We would be lying if we said there wasn’t a concern,” Kowaleski said.
Q&A: Oil-change routine varies wildly By Steven Cole Smith McClatchy Newspapers
QUESTION: I have a 2003 Ford F-350 diesel pickup that I keep in storage. I try to run it every two weeks, but question how often I should change oil in a vehicle that goes less than 500 miles a year. I have been changing the oil once a year, even though the oil comes out perfectly clear and moisture-free. I know Ford recommends changing oil on the diesel by the number of hours, but being as I put almost no hours on this vehicle, I feel like I am discarding perfectly good oil. Am I? —Harry Booth ANSWER: Once a year seems about right, especially if you are letting the engine heat up enough to reach regular operating temperatures when you crank it up every two weeks. You need the heat to dissipate any condensation that gathers inside the engine. I’d be more worried about corrosion in the brake fluid, degradation of the transmission fluid and
any rubber seals, and making sure you have reasonably fresh antifreeze in the radiator. Vehicles are built to drive, not to sit, and you can damage them as much by storing them as by driving them. Q: I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles, and people are telling me that’s way too often. The cars are a 2002 Mazda Millennia S and a 1989 Honda Civic. I use Castrol GTX non-synthetic oil. Do you think that’s too often? —Alan Fasel A: Is it too often? No. Is it more often than you have too? Yes. Every 5,000 miles is plenty. But if I’m looking for a used car, and I know you’ve been changing oil on your Mazda and Honda every 3,000 miles, I’m assuming you’ve taken care of the vehicles with the same attention to detail — and I’d willing to pay you more for your cars as a result. — Steven Cole Smith is the automotive editor at the Orlando Sentinel in Florida. Appeals court nixes Florida auto audio limits THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAKELAND — A state law making it illegal to blast loud music or other audio from a car stereo system has been declared unconstitutional. A three-judge panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Lakeland ruled Wednesday in a pair of Pinellas County cases. Both motorists were cited for playing their car radios too loudly. The judges found the law is an unconstitution-
al suppression of free speech because it arbitrarily exempts vehicles used for business or political purposes. They also ruled a provision making it illegal for sound to be “plainly audible” from 25 feet or more away from a vehicle was unconstitutionally vague. T he pa nel , t hough , agreed to certify the vagueness issue to the Florida Supreme Court for further review as a question of great public importance.

Racing team shoots for steam-powered land speed record By Arlene Satchell McClatchy Newspapers
FORT LAUDERDALE — A custom-built racing car outfitted with technology developed by a Pompano Beach company will attempt to break the world land speed record for steam vehicles this summer. Under the hood of the Cyclone-Williams LSR car will be a version of the Mark 5 steam engine invented by Harry Schoell, chief executive officer of Cyclone Power Technologies. The Cyclone Engine burns its fuel in an external combustion chamber, where the heat is used to turn water into steam to power the engine, according to the company. That process can be cheaper and cleaner than the traditional internal combustion engine used by most cars that ignites fuel under high pressure inside its cylinders. A commercial version of the car could be one answer to a world of rising oil prices. The Cyclone Power team is optimistic about the LSR car’s chances of beating the existing 148.308 miles per hour record set in 2009 by a British race team. The vehicle’s owner and engineer, Chuk Williams, will be steering the sleek, futuristic-looking car as it attempts history at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats raceway during the Aug. 13-19 Speed Week event. The vehicle has a projected speed of more than 160 mph and its engine sports fast and furious characteristics with much more power off the line than is achievable with today’s internal combustion engine, according to the company. “It’s a plum for the taking,” said Schoell of the record.

For Cyclone Power, the record attempt is a chance to showcase its steam engine technology on a bigger stage. “We want to show people that we have the power source for your everyday vehicle and have it in a way that’s less costly and more environmentally friendly,” President Christopher Nelson said. line, diesel and biofuels. With low emissions and exhaust, it’s environmentally-friendly, according to Schoell. Commercially, the Mark 5 engine could be used in power generators, automobiles, trucks and boats. “If the engine does what it’s supposed to do, we’ll break the record,” Williams said. “Then next year, we’ll juice it up and attempt to break our (own) record.”
