With new models coming, car dealers optimistic By Tom Incantalupo Newsday

MELVILLE, N.Y. — At the traditional start of a new model year, new car sales are a bright spot in an iffy economy, helping to raise hopes that a second recession will be avoided. Despite some clouds on the economic horizon, sales for all of this year are almost sure to finish above last year’s dismal levels. And many signs suggest further growth next year, although no one is publicly forecasting a return any time soon to pre-recession national sales

levels pushing 17 million new cars and light trucks. “Given that there are still pretty significant limiting factors as far as the economy, we look at 2012 as improved over 2011 but perhaps not significantly improved,” said Alec Gutierrez, a market analyst for the Kelley Blue Book Co. Inc., an auto information provider. Kelley expects sales nationally to total 12.5 million this year and just over 13 million next year. During the recession sales fell as low as 10.5 million, in 2009.

Reasons for optimism include pent-up demand. Some local dealers say the increasingly ratty cars being given as trade-ins suggest that buyers who postponed purchases during the recession are running out of time. “Getting a trade with 100,000 miles or more now is the norm,” said Mark Calisi, who sells Chevrolets, Kias, Mazdas and Volvos at his Eagle Auto Mall in Riverhead, N.Y. The average car and light truck on the road last year was almost 11 years old, compared with nine years for

cars and seven for trucks in 2007, according to the National Automotive Dealers Association. Another reason is improving supplies of Toyotas and Hondas, with the restoration of production interrupted by March’s earthquake and tsunami. At Huntington (N.Y.) Toyota/Scion, general manager Lenny Cafarelli said he has 250 cars allocated to him this month — five times the number in June and July. “I’m going to say that by the first See NEW, Page 2

Give right answers to mechanics’ questions By Brad Bergholdt McClatchy-Tribune News Service

QUESTION: I’ve noticed on a few occasions you’ve complimented someone on how they described the problem they had, and said it made it easier to figure out what was wrong. If this is so helpful, I wondered what kinds of things someone should try to look for and mention when they take their car in for repairs. —Kelly Taramino ANSWER: This is a great idea. Providing accurate symptom descriptions and relevant service history information can really make a difference in obtaining a reliable and cost effective diagnosis and repair, particularly with an intermittent problem. A skillful service adviser should be good at extracting useful information, but there is often a shortage of time during a vehicle write-up to think of everything. Here’s an example of how communication can go awry: The customer says, “Sometimes my car won’t start.” Do they mean it doesn’t crank, which is when the battery and starter team up to spin the engine? Or do they mean it cranks but doesn’t actually begin to run, or that it starts and stalls? Each of these conditions has different and multiple diagnostic paths, as well as solutions. Running rough, noises, stalling and “check engine” lights also have many possible diagnostic paths, depending on how or when the fault occurs. n For a no-crank or poor cranking condition, these are helpful nota-

Under the hood tions: Is this the first time it’s occurred? If not, does it happen only in the morning, or anytime? Does the battery require jumping or charging to work? Does jiggling the key, shifter or clutch pedal make a difference? Does the engine start perfectly during a later attempt? Has the battery light illuminated while driving? How much time is the vehicle parked between start-ups? Do the headlamps dim and brighten at times while driving? n Failing to start intermittently or for the first time: Outside temperature? Normal starter sounds? Recommended maintenance completed? Any previous repair attempts? If intermittent, does this occur during cold or hot engine starts? “Check engine” light when running? n Runs rough: At all times, idle, or only during acceleration? Engine hot or cold? Is the engine fairly smooth but lacks power, or is there a thumping roughness or power loss? Is it OK in idle but stumbles when accelerating? None, steady or flashing “check engine” light? Power loss only at high speed or load? Previous maintenance or repairs? Odors or sounds accompanying the condition? n “Check engine” light: Occasional or at all times? If occasional, under what conditions does the lamp first turn on? Steady or flashing? Does the engine run differently when the lamp

Available space prevents a thorough list of all that could be helpful. For the best repair of a tricky problem, write down everything pertinent you can think of and leave the note on the passenger’s seat for the technician to personally review, along with a contact number, should there be additional questions. I always worked extra hard on a job when I had direct or closer contact with the customer, and the outcome was better, faster and often less expensive for them. —Brad Bergholdt is an automotive technology instructor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, Calif. of the year, we’ll be back to normal in ground stock,” he said. With increased supplies of Japanese models have come increased incentives on them — rebates and the like, said Gutierrez. “Expect to see GM and Ford and Chrysler try to answer the Japanese in some way with additional incentives,” he said. Incentives usually stimulate sales. More positives are low interest rates on loans and improved availability of credit. Mark Schienberg, president of the local dealer group, said significant new products also should help, including two mainstays for their manufacturers: the Toyota Camry and Honda CR-V, the former now on sale, the latter due by year’s end. A redesigned Chevrolet Malibu is due early next year and a redone Nissan Altima later in the year, along with a new compact Dodge sedan. The 2012 model year traditionally begins Oct. 1, though most new models introduced since last Jan. 1 have been designated 2012s, while most to come after Jan. 1, 2012, will be 2013s. zon, experts say, include the economic uncertainty that’s hurting consumer confidence. For that reason, dealer Calisi is less optimistic than some others in his industry. “The basic fundamentals for people to

buy cars and trucks are not there,” he said. “If the economy grows, sales will grow.” But, Schienberg said, “The auto industry continues to defy what’s going on out there in other economic sectors.”

2012 BMW 3 Snappy Sonic another sign series lighter of Chevrolet’s evolution and roomier By Mark Phelan

2012 CHEVROLET SONIC LTZ HATCHBACK:

Detroit Free Press

By Jerry Hirsch Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES — BMW will introduce a new version of its popular 3-series sports sedan that will weigh less but have bigger dimensions, giving rear-seat passengers more space. The 2012 model, which will appear at dealerships in February, is crucial to BMW’s strategy in the United States and for its global sales, said Tim Urquhart, an analyst with IHS Automotive. “The BMW 3 series is in many ways the company’s keynote model,” Urquhart said. “It is the bestselling premium passenger car model in the world and has long set the agenda as being symbolic of BMW’s wider corporate strategy at any given point.” BMW has sold more than 60,000 of the current model vehicle in the U.S. this year, far outpacing other small luxury sedans, including its second-most-popular rival, the Mercedes-Benz C class, at 39,000 cars sold, as well as offerings from Audi, Infiniti and Lexus. The automaker, which unveiled the car at an event in Germany, did not provide information about fuel economy or U.S. pricing. The 2011 model starts around $35,000. The new generation 3 series will have many of the same styling cues as the current model, and one version of the sedan will come with a four-cylinder engine. And for the first time, BMW also plans to sell a hybrid version of the car. BMW stopped selling four-cylinder engines in the U.S. more than a decade ago, thinking they didn’t fit

BMW also is going to an eightspeed automatic transmission in the new 3 series, another move that is expected to improve fuel economy. the profile of its luxury buyers. But more automakers are shrinking their engines to meet more stringent fueleconomy standards. Four-cylinder engines now account for about 65 percent of all cars built in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, up from 48 percent five years ago. Six-cylinder vehicle production slipped to 25 percent from nearly 40 percent. BMW, however, doesn’t expect to be giving up any performance in the new car. The new power plant will come in the less expensive 328i. It will be a turbocharged four-banger that produces as much as 240 horsepower. That’s slightly more powerful than the six-cylinder engine in the current 328i. BMW says the new 328i will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. The more expensive 335i model will come with BMW’s 6-cylinder engine. BMW also is going to an eight-speed automatic transmission in the new 3 series, another move that is expected to improve fuel economy. The car also sheds 88 pounds, which should help improve fuel efficiency.

The 2012 Sonic subcompact is the latest strong entry from small-car specialist Chevrolet. Wait. Let me try again. I promise I’ll get through that sentence without laughing. Give me one more chance. Chevrolet’s not a small-car specialist. Never has been. But still ... The three newest, and three of the best, cars in Chevy showrooms are the subcompact Sonic, compact Cruze and Volt. Something’s going on here. Chevy built its brand image on powerful sports cars, roomy family sedans and rugged pickups. Chevy’s honor roll includes the Camaro, Corvette, Malibu and Silverado, not benighted small cars like the Chevette, Vega, Cavalier and Cobalt. But all of a sudden, Chevrolet is pumping out excellent small cars like a Pez dispenser. The Sonic’s impressive list of features includes 10 air bags, a spunky and fuel-efficient turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, responsive handling and attractive, contemporary styling. The car’s interior materials and voice recognition for hands-free phone calls need work, but the Sonic has a lot going for it. Chevrolet’s new line of small cars could be the start of something big. The Sonic was a risky bet, but it appears to have paid off. Chevrolet bet that it could develop a subcompact that would compete with Asian small-car experts like Honda, Hyundai and Toyota. The United Auto Workers Union bet its members would make unprecedented concessions to build the car in the U.S. at a price that challenges vehicles from Mexico, Japan and Korea.

The 2012 Sonic subcompact is the latest strong entry from small-car specialist Chevrolet. The Sonic is the only subcompact built in the U.S. It’s the latest among new subcompacts that have more features, comfort, style and performance than earlier small cars. It competes with the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris. Prices for the Sonic start at $13,735 for a sedan with a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. Hatchbacks start at $14,635 with the same engine and transmission. Adding a six-speed automatic raises the price to $14,805 for the sedan and $15,705 for the hatch. All Sonics come with 10 air bags and other safety features including antilock brakes and stability control. An optional turbocharged 1.4-liter engine and six-speed manual transmission give the Sonic plenty of pep and add 1 m.p.g. to its EPA highway fuel economy rating. The engine and transmission cost $700 and are available on the Sonic LT and LTZ. I tested a Sonic LTZ hatchback with the turbocharged engine and six-speed manual. It cost $17,935. All prices exclude destination charges. Sonic prices are competitive with the other comparably equipped subcompacts.

The hatchback’s exterior design has crisp, sporty lines. The front view is particularly strong, with four large round lights bracketing a bold twin-port grille. The sides are noteworthy for sharp creases over the front fenders and rear-door handles concealed in black trim around the windows. The passenger compartment has more room than the Fiesta, Accent and Yaris. Headroom is particularly generous. The hatchback offers a useful 19.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity — 30.7 with the rear seats folded flat. The Sonic’s gauges are easy to read. Their design appears to be influenced by motorcycles and video games. The stalks, dials and controls feel solid and substantial, but the interior materials are very basic. Just about every surface is covered in hard plastic. The front seat could use more storage bins. A sunglass holder and a center armrest with storage underneath would be welcome. The Sonic’s voice-recognition system for hands-free phone calls is poor. The sound quality of hands-free calls is quite good, however. Wind and road noise are minimal, even at high speeds and over bumpy surfaces. The Sonic’s handling is responsive and enjoyable. The steering provides good feedback. The suspension absorbs

bumps well and holds the car stable through fast curves and other enthusiastic maneuvers. The Sonic’s quick steering and small size make it ridiculously easy to park. The 1.4-liter turbocharged engine revs eagerly. It generates peak torque of 148 pound-feet at just 2,500 engine rpm. The shifter is slick, the clutch light. The high torque at low engine speeds provides strong acceleration, but only through the first three gears. Fourth, fifth and sixth gears are all overdrives, with tall ratios that top out at 0.61:1. That contributes to fuel economy, but leads to frequent downshifts when dicing in traffic. The Sonic I tested rated 29 mpg city, 40 on the highway and 33 in combined driving. The combined rating matches the best subcompacts on the road. The Sonic’s looks, features, performance and price help it stand out in spite of the interior’s unappealing materials. Chevy and the UAW backed a long shot when they bet on the Sonic. It came home a winner.
