Aftermarket mirror makes OnStar available for non-GM vehicles

Camry, meet OnStar.

General Motors’ OnStar service, a longtime leader in safety with its army of live on-demand advisers, is now available in the form of an aftermarket rear-view mirror called OnStar For My Vehicle that can be installed in almost any car.

OnStar FMV will be available Sunday for $299.99 plus a $75 installation fee at Best Buy stores nationwide.

Service plans for the OnStar FMV unit start at $18.95 a month, or $199 a year. GM says the mirror is compatible with more than 90 mil-

lion vehicles.

The mirror provides access to OnStar services such as automatic crash response, hands-free calling, turn-byturn navigation and help in finding a stolen vehicle.

An accelerometer inside the OnStar FMV detects when a car has been in a crash and automatically rings an OnStar adviser who can locate the car and direct emergency personnel to the location. “We can now package everything into one unit and contain it in that unit,� said Vijay Iyer, director of public affairs and corporate communications at OnStar.

There are quirks to the

OnStar FMV’s approach, though.

The unit is not integrated with a car’s sound system. So as commands issue from the mirror, such as turn-by-turn directions or an incoming call, the car stereo is not briefly quieted as it is in an OnStarequipped GM car. This can make the prompts a bit hard to hear.

OnStar FMV does not allow for some of the service’s more advanced features such as vehicle diagnostics, which can deliver instant warnings on things like tire pressure and send drivers a monthly email detailing the car’s condition.

The one snag I hit during my testing in an OnStarprovided Ford Explorer was when OnStar FMV had trouble confirming that I wanted directions to get to work, and it offered to take me to a live adviser. The adviser was having computer issues and couldn’t help send the directions to the unit. She apologized and politely asked me to call back in to the system for help from another adviser as she was unable to transfer me.

By the time I reached a second adviser and vehicle directions were downloaded to the mirror, the whole process took 4 1/2 minutes.

But that delay is a fluke

among OnStar’s 3 million calls each month, Iyer said. More than half of GM drivers keep OnStar once the promotional period expires, and 60 percent of those drivers renew later, he said.

The real power in OnStar, though, isn’t in navigation or hands-free calling — tasks that several other gadgets do much better without a monthly fee. Rather it’s the safety features, which first wowed consumers in 1996.

The mirror’s emergency button can be used for health emergencies or if a driver witnesses an accident. The service can also be used to quickly ask for roadside assistance for

breakdowns or flat tires.

Ford, which leapfrogged ahead of OnStar with its focus on the smartphone and Bluetooth technology, is now testing its own network of live operators — an admission of sorts that customers value connecting directly with a real person.

Among OnStar’s 6 million subscribers in the U.S., Canada and China, there are 20,000 emergency service requests each month, Iyer said.

It’s that peace of mind that will draw people to the OnStar FMV, even as the service works to catch up to an increasingly technology-hungry customer base.

GM to invest $328 million in Michigan assembly plant

DETROIT — General Motors Co. will invest $328 million in its Flint, Mich., assembly plant, creating or preserving about 150 jobs as the automaker prepares for next-generation full-size pickups, expected in 2013.

“That is the bread and butter of General Motors,” Dana Rouse, the United Auto Workers bargaining chairman at the Flint factory, said of the pickups.

Some of the factory updates are already in progress. For instance, the plant’s shutdown during the first two weeks of July allowed some of the work to be done. Still, the plant will likely close for about eight weeks next year to prepare to build the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, people familiar with the plans have told the Free Press.

“This investment will allow us to continue build-

ing award-winning full-size pickups that offer better fuel efficiency than ever before without sacrificing features and functionality,” said Cathy Clegg, GM vice president of labor relations.

GM had already said it would add a third shift worth about 750 jobs to the Flint factory this year, with the positions going to transfers and laid-off workers.

Monday’s Flint announcement is part of the 4,000-

job, eight-state hiring blitz CEO Dan Akerson trumpeted in May, as GM prepares for U.S. consumer demand for cars and trucks to continue to grow.

GM has already announced the bulk of those jobs, including 2,500 new jobs at its Detroit-Hamtramck factory.

GM’s burgeoning pickup inventory has worried analysts this year, even before Flint’s third shift has started building trucks.

The automaker ended June with a 122-day supply, and GM says it wants to trim that to 100 to 110 days’ worth. That’s still well beyond analysts’ typical recommendations.

Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, has told the Free Press that GM plans to trim production as truck inventories increase.

But GM is comfortable building inventories in the coming years, he said, so it doesn’t run short when

it transitions to the nextgeneration pickups.

The Flint factory is still waiting for GM to greenlight a plan to spend $417 million to build a new paint shop for the truck plant by June 2015, which would allow the factory to become more productive and could require the plant to add a few more workers.

The Michigan Economic Growth Authority last month approved state tax credits for that proposal.

One bad switch can mess up the rest of your gadgets

QUESTION: My 2003 Dodge Dakota cab is always hot, and cycling the switch through all the positions does not help. In even mild weather I have to open the windows or turn on the AC. The thermostat is new, and the truck runs somewhat cool.

I suppose a shutter somewhere is stuck or broken?

Any simple way to trace and fix something like this?

Also, the passenger side electric window cannot be controlled by the passenger. The master controller by the driver works just

fine to raise and lower it. I replaced the switch on the passenger side, but to no avail. Any idea where to go next?

ANSWER: Ross, Your Dakota uses a gadget called a blend door to regulate HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) temperature output.

Incoming ventilation air is directed by the blend door to pass either through the heater core, around it, or a specified blend. Blend doors allow quick changes in temperature as opposed to vehicles using a hot water control valve, which regulates heater core temperature. The down

side is most blend door vehicles run a continuous flow of hot engine coolant through the heater core at all times, which warms up the neighborhood.

It’s possible your blend door or the electronically controlled actuator that drives it is sticking, allowing some ventilation air to pass through the heater core, regardless of your temperature selection. A scan tool check for diagnostic trouble codes would likely show a code for an out of position blend door if this were the case.

Before surrendering the job to a pro, how about verifying ventilation outlet temperature, using a

Under the hood digital cooking thermometer or non-contact temperature gun, a tool that’s now surprisingly affordable. If the outlet temperature is more than four or five degrees higher than ambient temperature, there may be a blend door issue. Another trick is to pinch off one of the heater hoses — there are two of them, thumb diameter, under the hood, leading to the firewall — and see what effect this has on outlet temperature. If outlet temperature drops,

this also points to a possible blend door problem.

I’d also check the rearof-hood weather strip. If it’s out of position, damaged or missing, your HVAC system may draw in heated engine compartment air through the grille at the base of the windshield. Servicing the blend door parts is a time intensive job, as the instrument panel must first be removed.

Your inoperative passenger window is either caused by a faulty driver’s side switch or disconnected yellow wire leading from the lockout, or kid inhibitor, switch to the passenger door.

It seems odd the master switch could do this, but both master and slave, or passenger side, switches contain normally closed contacts, which allow a pathway for the electricity to be used by the other switch. In other words, the switch that isn’t being used can be the problem.

Prior to renewing this more expensive switch, write back and I’ll send you more detailed testing instructions.

Toyota, Ford hybrids get top marks in environmentalist ranking

LOS ANGELES — Toyota Motor Corp. and Ford Motor Co. are producing the best hybrid vehicles, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

In its annual review of vehicles that run on gasoline and electricity, the organization ranked the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrid as the

top vehicles in the non-luxury segment of the market.

The nonprofit group rated the Lincoln MKZ hybrid, built by Ford, and the Lexus CT 200h, a Toyota product, as the top luxury models.

The rankings are based on a combination of fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions and the number of “options” that buyers are forced to purchase when buying a hybrid

version of a vehicle as opposed to how the standard gasoline model is sold.

“We are comparing each model to its conventional gasoline counterpart,” said Don Anair, an analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists.

“The hybrid MKZ gives you a huge boost on fuel economy.

You go from 21 to 39 miles per gallon.”

The Prius, which is a ded-

icated hybrid model, was measured against the Toyota Matrix because they have a similar engine size, performance and interior space, Anair said.

Hybrid versions of sportutility vehicles, including the Chevrolet Tahoe and Volkswagen Touareg, generally fared poorly in the rankings, although the Toyota Highlander, Lexus 450h and

Cadillac Escalade did get good marks. The hybrid Volkswagen Touareg, for example, gets less than a 10 percent improvement in its global warming emissions over the conventional version, the group said. Most hybrids get about a 40 percent emissions reduction.

Some “automakers are using the technology to increase power over the con-

ventional model rather than to achieve fuel savings,” Anair said.

The top-selling hybrids achieve 30 mpg or better, he said, and that should be a guideline for automakers who want to have success in the market.

Anair said several automakers were working to make hybrid models more accessible for consumers.

One-stop car shop offers vehicles for movies, TV

LOS ANGELES — It looks just like any other car lot in the San Fernando Valley, with its own showroom, parts department and body shop.

But this business, on the site of a former Cadillac dealership, isn’t open to the public. Picture Car Warehouse is a one-stop car shop for Hollywood filmmakers where the vehicles themselves are the stars.

There’s the iconic yellow Volkswagen bus from “Little Miss Sunshine,” the gold Pontiac that actor Dwayne Johnson powered in the thriller “Faster,” and the classic 1966 Plymouth driven by Jerry O’Connell in the current CBS series “The Defenders,” today valued at $175,000.

Picture Car leases hundreds of police cars, fire trucks and school buses, period autos and custombuilt vehicles to producers of commercials, TV shows such as “Mad Men” and “Castle,” and movies, including “X-Men: First Class” and “Men in Black III.” Despite the slowdown in production that has squeezed many local service companies as work has migrated out of state, the company has emerged as one of the leading players in the so-called picture car business. Hollywood has long been the center of cutting-edge designs for cars used in films and TV, including the George Barrisdesigned Batmobile depicted in the 1960s TV series “Batman” and the modified DeLorean in “Back to the Future.”

“We opened up in 2003 and we’ve gone crazy ever since,” said Picture Car founder Ted Moser, a veteran transportation coordinator for such movies as “The Town” and “2 Fast 2 Furious.”

Moser started with just 25 cars and two employees.

Today his company has about 750 vehicles and more than 40 employees, who include painters, mechanics, body shop experts, graphic design-

ous year, Moser said. Cinema Vehicle Services in North Hollywood remains the largest player.

Moser’s foray into the film business began two decades ago when he was running an auto repair shop in Parker, Colo., and he was hired to repair some cars for a TV pilot.

“My vision was to build a place where transportation coordinators could find everything they need in one spot,” Moser said.

On Monday, a trailer had just hauled off a 1968 Chevy Cheyenne pickup truck for a scene in the locally filmed HBO series “True Blood.”

A shiny LAPD car parked near the showroom had just returned from a Sprint commercial shoot in downtown L.A. and earlier appeared in an episode of the TV series “Entourage.” And a yellow school bus just featured in the Comedy Central show “Tosh.0” was parked nearby.

Although feature film work has slowed in Los Angeles, Picture Car has managed to follow the business to

other states. The company recently shipped two dozen Plymouths, Ford Galaxies and other cars from the ‘60s and early ‘70s to New York, where “Men in Black III” is being filmed. An additional 50 cars, many fitted with futuristic solar panels, were sent to Louisiana this year for the upcoming sci-fi film “Looper,” starring Bruce Willis.

Steady work also comes from still shoots and commercials. Advance Auto Parts enlisted Picture Car for a TV spot showing sky-diving store employees replacing a battery on a car as it is literally falling out of the sky.

Three Honda Civics were especially designed for the aerial shot, which was filmed in Yuma, Ariz.

Picture Car supplied various vehicles for AMC’s “Mad Men,” including the Cadillac driven by Jon Hamm’s character and a 1963 John Deere tractor called for in one episode that was difficult to find. Moser helped find the tractor somewhere in Ohio. “He gets what it takes to make things happen,” said Duke Foster, transportation coordinator for last season’s “Mad Men.” The company rents out its vehicles for $350 a day but also specializes in making custom-built cars to match the specific design and type of action called for in a script. In the Ben Affleck crime caper “The Town,” for example, Moser and his crew had to install a 350-horsepower engine into a Dodge Caravan that served as a getaway car.

Moser and his team often need to disable computer systems, anti-lock brakes and air bags so cars can perform the way directors want.

“A director will say, ‘I want that car to spin the tires, go to two blocks, hit the brakes, slide the rear end down the corner and then hit that pole,’” Moser said.

“We have to make the cars do stuff manufacturers don’t want them to do.”
