Autauga County accident kills man, injures another

A two-vehicle crash Saturday evening has claimed the life of an Autaugaville man.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the accident occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Othell Motley, 76, was critically injured when the 2001 GMC Jimmy in which he was a passen-

ger was struck by a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Jacqueline C. Gibbons, 60, of Tallassee.

“Motley was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Baptist Medical Center South, in Montgomery, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” ALEA said in a statement.

Gibbons was injured and transported to Jackson

Hospital, in Montgomery. The driver of the GMC Jimmy, James Steele, 65, also of Autaugaville, was injured and transported to Baptist Medical Center South.

The crash occurred on Autauga County 33, approximately seven miles northwest of Autaugaville, in Autauga County.

No other information is available as troopers with the ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.

Honoring a military man

On September 14, Major Graden “Grady” E. Loveless passed away. He may not get the attention of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, but I’ll be at his funeral on Monday, even though Maj. Loveless was a frequent critic of my columns. That’s because we both shared something in common: a desire for our men and women in uniform to get the same ability to vote as civilians.

Ever since I started writing for the LaGrange Daily News, I think I’ve received email critiques from the Grady. Occasionally, we would agree on something. Even in a sharp disagreement, he always kept things professional. Sometimes I’d get a “I don’t know where you’re coming from,” followed by an invitation to the Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast, an event not to be missed. He was a big supporter of Toys for Tots, which I now run for annually in Auburn thanks to Grady.

At LaGrange College, I get my students to do research for those who come to us with questions, whether it’s conducting a survey, running a statistical analysis, or any other subject. You’ve probably read a few of them that my undergraduates and I have done.

After the 2008 election, Maj. Loveless emailed me, upset after reading that many members of the military didn’t get the opportunity to vote. “Is this true?” he asked me. Can you look into this?

I admit that military voting wasn’t on my mind. I figured all was going well because I just didn’t hear much about it. Challenge accepted! Grady was right. We found that members of the military just didn’t get the chance to vote. Only a third of the 1 million ballots sent to the military and overseas voters were cast in 2006. Additional studies showed that many states really needed to upgrade their absentee voting. For those new-found critics of absentee ballots and mail-in voting after the 2020 election, you think about those serving our country, and how important their vote is.

Congress did pass the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act in 2009, which President Obama signed into law. It revised UOCAVA, mandating that absentee ballots get to the military and overseas voters 45 days before the election. But Grady pressed us to keep looking into military voting issues. And yes, we found something.

Sure, the states were good about having their primaries 45 days before the election, giving time for those ballots to get to the military. But a number of states held runoff elections less

than 45 days after the primary. There was no time for our armed forces to get their votes to pick the nominee. Some states held runoffs just two or three weeks after the primary.

So, my students and I wrote several columns, and published them anywhere we could. We got a lot of supportive replies. The Justice Department either read our columns or coincidently sued every state we listed that was in violation of the MOVE Act. We called Secretary of State offices, and they promised us they were sending a blank ballot with the original ballot. It wasn’t a perfect idea (what if your candidate loses in the primary and doesn’t make the runoff?). But a number of states did reform their runoffs, holding primaries early, and runoffs well before the Fall Election to actually follow the MOVE Act and avoid trouble with the Justice Department.

I recently learned that Grady actually enjoyed our email exchanges. He’d also be pleased to know that military voting rates rose to nearly 50 percent in 2016 and 2020. But if Grady were alive today, he’d remind us that we could do better by our armed forces when it comes to ballots.

Alabama State Board of Education

School board members are some of the most selfless public servants in Alabama. This accolade goes to the Alabama State Board of Education, and more specifically local school board members. These members are tasked with a very important mission but receive very little compensation for their time and efforts. They are indeed public servants.

The Alabama State Board of Education is a nine member body that sets public education policy for K-12 schools. The governor is an ex-officio member of the board and the remaining eight members are elected to fouryear terms from single member districts of approximately equal population. There is no limit to the number of terms a school board member may serve. The seats are partisan driven. Currently, our state school board has six Republican members and two Democratic members.

Given the fact that members are elected, rather than appointed, it is somewhat surprising that our current eight members are so well-qualified and suited to be state school board members.

Dr. Wayne Reynolds, who represents District 8, best exemplifies this statement. He has a doctorate in education and has spent over four decades as an education administrator. He is retired and brings his experience and wisdom to the table. In his early years, Wayne was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran. He and his wife Carol reside in the Limestone/Madison area. Wayne is a Republican and was re-elected to his second four-year term earlier this year.

Marie Manning has just been elected to District 6, which is a Republican district. She will begin her first term in January. Prior to her recent election to the state school board, Marie served as Vice President of the St. Clair County Board of Education. During her stellar career in

education, Marie was as a classroom teacher, vice-principal, principal and superintendent.

Dr. Yvette Richardson represents District 4 and is a resident of Montgomery. Yvette is a Democrat and was re-elected to another four-year term in the Democratic Primary. She has a doctorate degree from the University of Alabama and has had a distinguished career in education.

Tracie West is a Republican member of the board from District 2. She was re-elected to a second four-year term in the Republican Primary. She hails from Auburn and, as would be expected from this area, is well-qualified and versed in education knowledge and policy. Prior to being elected to the state school board, Tracie served as a member of the Auburn City Schools Board of Education, including serving as president of that board.

There are four members up for re-election in 2024, Jackie Ziegler, Stephanie Bell, Tonya Chestnut, and Belinda McRae, provided all four decide to seek another term.

Jackie Ziegler of Mobile is a Republican board member and represents District 1. She was first elected in 2016, and is an experienced and successful educator. She is a graduate of the University of South Alabama. She was a classroom teacher, then longtime principal in the Mobile County School System. She is married to State Auditor Jim Ziegler.

Stephanie Bell, who represents District 3, is by far the most veteran member of the board having first been elected in 1994 and re-elected to eight

consecutive terms. At the end of her current term, she will have served over 30 years. She is a stellar member, an asset to the board, and hopefully will run again. Stephanie is a lifelong resident of Montgomery as is her husband.

Dr. Tonya Chestnut, a native of Selma, is a Democrat and represents District 5. She has a doctorate in education and is the former Dean of Alabama State University College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Belinda McRae of Hamilton is the Republican board member for District 7. She is in her first term. Belinda taught English and art for 25 years in the Marion County School System and served on the Marion County Board of Education before being elected to the State School Board.

Choosing the State Superintendent is probably the most important task of the Alabama State School Board and the Board made an excellent choice when they selected Dr. Eric Mackey as Alabama State Superintendent of Education. Dr. Mackey is a former school superintendent and former Executive Director of the State School Superintendents Association.

Most of our former governors did not take their ex-officio role as seriously as Governor Kay Ivey. Governor Ivey has been a very active and dutiful member of the Alabama State School Board.

In closing, allow me to not only give accolades to the state school board, but also a tip of the hat to all local school board members.

Alabama physicians are taking action to reduce the number and potency of opioid prescriptions and to increase access to medication that rapidly reverses opioid overdoses, according to a new report released last Thursday from the American Medical Association.

The report shows opioid prescriptions in Alabama decreased 41.6 percent from 2012-2021. From 2020-2021, opioid prescriptions in the state declined 1.6 percent, marking the eighth consecutive year the number of opioid prescriptions in Alabama has dropped.

The dosage strength of opioid prescriptions fell 52.7 percent from 2012-2021 and dropped 6.5 percent between 2020-2021. Prescriptions of naloxone to treat patients at risk of an opioid overdose rose 851 percent between 2012-2021 and 35.4 from 2020-2021. Physicians and other healthcare professionals accessed the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program more than 5.5 million times in 2021, an increase of three percent from 2020. Healthcare providers who dispense opioids in Alabama must report the information to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to help physicians detect the abuse and misuse of prescriptions.

The Medical Association of the State of Alabama was one of the first medical associations in the country to offer a continuing education course to train physicians on

safely and effectively prescribing opioids. Since 2009, more than 8,000 prescribers in Alabama have completed the course.

“Alabama physicians are advancing the fight against the opioid crisis by continuing to reduce the number and potency of prescribed opioids in our state, and by furthering our education on opioids,” said Dr. Julia Boothe, President of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. “While we are making good progress in these areas under a physician’s control, Alabama is in a worsening overdose epidemic due primarily to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, which is found in more than 75 percent of counterfeit pills and other substances. No community is safe from this poison.”

Fentanyl overdose deaths in Alabama increased a staggering 135.9 percent from 2020 to 2021, (453 deaths in 2020 to 1,069 in 2021).

Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, chair of the American Medical Association’s Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force, said fentanyl is “supercharging” the increase in fatal drug overdoses.

“What is becoming painfully evident is that there are limits to what physicians can do. We have dramatically increased training and changed our prescribing habits, reducing the number of opioids prescribed while increasing access to naloxone, buprenorphine and methadone. But illicitly manufactured fentanyl is supercharging this epidemic,” said Dr. Mukkamala.

A Prattville man was arrested after a traffic stop turned into a foot chase. Tuesday morning a Trooper within the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Alabama 143 and Alabama 14 in Elmore County.

“The driver, identified as Joseph Wise, 32, of Prattville, assaulted the Trooper then fled on foot,” ALEA said in a release. “Several units from various divisions within ALEA responded to assist in the search including ALEA’s Aviation Unit, Special Agents and SWAT Team Members within the Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and

additional Troopers within ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, along with deputies from the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) K-9 Team.”

Prattville man arrested for assaulting trooper in Elmore County Opioid prescriptions in Alabama fall for eighth year

Within two and half hours Wise was apprehended without incident and booked into the Elmore County Jail. Wise was officially charged with resisting arrest, third-degree assault, escape and criminal mischief. Citations were also issued for window tint and driving with a revoked license.

Wise has a $27,000 bond available to him.

No officers were injured over the course of the incident.

Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.

Clair is a Shepherd mix, sevenmonths old and only about 45 lbs., so not a big gal. She was found as a stray and brought to the shelter but no one ever came for her. She is a very sweet dog that loves to play and does have some extra energy to channel. The bowls in the kennels get quite a workout after breakfast every morning! Clair is smart, willing to please, is very respondent to treats and loves attention.

and $50 for cats under one-yearold; cats over one-year-old can be adopted by approved adopters for a fee of their choosing. One of the four seasons that we experience here in the United States is Autumn. This season is commonly referred to as Fall. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year when the hot Summer weather begins to fade into cooler, crisp days. The leaves on the trees change from green to beautiful shades of red, yellow, orange, and brown. Fun events like pumpkin carving, hayrides, corn mazes, fall festivals, and Fall sports, such as Football, are all happening in communities across the Country. Popular Fall holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving occur in October and November. Many people enjoy baking with pumpkins that are harvested in September and October. The first day of Autumn always occurs in late September and lasts about three months; this year the first official day of Fall is September 22, 2022. The first day of Fall is always determined by the Autumnal Equinox--the day when the Sun is directly over the Equator in the Northern Hemisphere. The farther away we are from the Sun, the cooler and shorter the days will become. Because Autumn is the transition to cold weather, it is also a time when many people prepare their homes for the Winter. Animals begin to gather food in the Fall and prepare for the Winter months, while birds begin to migrate south for the Winter. Enjoy this beautiful season!

Summer heat has returned following a brief tease of fall weather. Tomorrow may be the first day of fall, but it definitely isn’t time to close the swimming pool just yet!

Two Sundays ago was September 11. This National Day of Remembrance is observed in a variety of ways throughout our country. Most of the observances feature the heralding of first responders and average people stepping in to do the right thing in time of crisis. Most of the visual observances bear the slogan “Never Forget”.

Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week: Malik Owens

The votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week is Wetumpka wide receiver Malik Owens.

Owens, a junior for the Indians football team, earned 439 of the 1,015 total votes cast. He beat fellow Wetumpka student and volleyball player, Julie Boshell, by only 25 votes in one of the closest races this season.

Boshell earned 414 total votes while Edgewood Academy athlete Gabe LeMaster earned 162 votes after his stellar game last week.

Owens had one of the best games of any Wetumpka offensive player this season. The junior wideout secured six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown in Wetumpka’s win over Park Crossing last week.

Owens was making catch after catch to move the chains in the game, but his biggest catch came just after halftime.

While scrambling in the pocket, quarterback Nate Rogers found Owens wide open down the left sideline.

Owens made the catch and raced 50 yards for the touchdown to put the Indians up by two possessions.

His catch helped the Indians earn their first region win of the season as Wetumpka moved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in region play. The Indians now set their sights to Russell County tonight for another region matchup.

Wetumpka pays tribute to 1979/1980 state championship basketball teams

The City of Wetumpka will celebrate its first two state championship basketball teams this week.

Wetumpka will pay tribute to its first two state championship teams, the 1979 and 1980 Wetumpka high school basketball teams, in a special ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Wetumpka Civic Center.

“The highlights of the ceremony will be a powerful documentary maiden presentation that depicts how these two teams transformed a town through their basketball accomplishments as integration began to take hold,” Lewis Washington said in a press release.

DALTON MIDDLETON: My thoughts about each team five weeks in

We are five weeks into the 2022 high school football season, which means we are roughly halfway done with the regular season.

Most teams have played four of their 10 regular season games up to this point, with one bye week, but there are a few teams that have played all five weeks of the season.

Whether they’ve played four or five games this fall, I’ve been able to get a pretty good idea of how good each team in Elmore County is and what each team is about. Here’s what I learned about each team so far.

WETUMPKA

Wetumpka is the real deal. Through five weeks, the Indians have a 4-1 record and they’re only loss came on a last-second touchdown to Pike Road, the defending 5A champs.

They are currently 2-1 in region play with three region games left, and it’s possible the Indians are sitting at 8-2 or 9-1 with a home playoff game come November. Are they legit contenders? That’s yet to be seen, but they’re good.

The always potent Wetumpka defense is allowing 16 points per game, and they’ve held three of their four opponents to 10 points or under. The offense, on the other hand, is averaging 32 points per game and has not been held under 24 points yet this year.

The Indians are rolling and they have an energy and swagger about them that can take them a long way.

STANHOPE ELMORE

Don’t look at Stanhope’s record. It does not tell the whole story.

The Mustangs are 1-3, but all three of their losses have been by one possession. They are a good team playing a really tough schedule, and it only gets tougher.

Russell County and a two-point loss to Montgomery Carver, which is undefeated this year.

There’s a really, really good chance that Stanhope can have a 3-3 or 4-2 region record at the end of the year and in a decent spot come playoffs. The Mustangs just have to learn to get over the hump of a close game. They have all the talent in the world, they just haven’t been able to run a close game into a win yet.

HOLTVILLE

Holtville’s team has proved it can score and play extremely well this season in two games, but the Bulldogs have also played pretty poorly in two games. They are 2-2 this season and while the talent is there to have a good season, they have to be more consistent.

In four weeks, they’ve gone blowout win, close loss, blowout win, and then close loss. If they want to be able to make a run in the playoffs, they will have to find some consistency over the next month.

Their next two region games are Jemison and Marbury. They should win both games, but they have to be consistent and play well to clinch that playoff spot. That means winning two games in a row, Bulldogs.

ELMORE COUNTY

Elmore County has jumped out to a 3-1 record this year, and they’re solid. They’ve had the benefit of a fairly weaker schedule, but that along with a new coach has brought upon a sense of confidence in the Panthers.

You’re seeing that unfold as the Panthers blow out teams this year. They got a taste of humble pie against Central Clay County, but a

loss early in the season is never a bad thing. Elmore County has the offensive weapons to score at will with Payton Stephenson, Garrett Allen, CJ Wilkes and Jabari Murphy.

If they rebound off this loss and start clicking, watch out for them. The Panthers will continue putting points up.

TALLASSEE

Tallassee is currently on a threegame losing streak and the Tigers are 0-2 in region play. The Tigers have some talent with players such as Tyler Ellis, Cade Everson, DJ Leonard and others, but they have to slow down on the penalties.

It seems every time the Tigers get a big play this year, it’s wiped out by a personal foul or an unnecessary hold. They have the talent to play smash mouth football like they usually do, but they just have to put it together quickly.

If they don’t, it can turn out to be a rough season really quick. Three must-win region games await the Tigers in the next month.

EDGEWOOD ACADEMY

Edgewood’s record, much like Stanhope’s, doesn’t need to be too focused on. The Wildcats are 1-3, but they have arguably the hardest schedule in AISA.

Their biggest issue is the run defense.

Edgewood has allowed over 300 yards on the ground in two of their four games this year. If they can clean up that, they have a chance to make a run. They’re currently 1-1 in region play, and they have Macon East and Hooper Academy left.

Hooper should be a win for the Wildcats, at least in my mind. Macon East, if the Wildcats play well, could go either way.

Stop the run, and your offense is strong enough to be able to score some points. The offense hasn’t been too consistent, but it is explosive and can put up points.

Elmore County volleyball claims Block Party championship

The Elmore County high school volleyball team dominated its way through the Block Party championship on Saturday.

Elmore County, which hosted 11 total teams in Eclectic for its ninth annual Block Party Tournament, went 5-0 and won the tournament championship. The Lady Panthers lost only one set the entire day and beat Wetumpka, 2-0, in the championship match.

“I think one thing that worked for us, especially towards the end against Wetumpka, was the absence of service errors,” Elmore County coach Kim Moncrief said. “We were making some bad errors earlier in the week and we were making our serves and our defense played great.”

Elmore County avenged its loss to Wetumpka earlier in the week. The Lady Indians came to Eclectic last Monday and beat Elmore County, 2-0.

Moncrief saw a lot of service errors in that matchup, and her team played much better on defense.

Wetumpka has a potent offensive attack with Khloe Harris leading the charge. Star Angier, Madison Young and Madison Milton are also all more than capable of killing the ball for multiple points every set, but Elmore County was able to counter that with great play on the back row.

That defensive play led the Lady Panthers to their second consecutive Block Party championship win over Wetumpka.

“We’ve got a really good back row with Hailey O’Brien, Natalie Sullivan, and Taylor Ann Eason,” Moncrief said. “The three of them, especially in the championship game, did a really good job of getting the ball off the floor. I think yesterday, they did an excellent job of doing that. Coranda (Lozada) and Lizzy (Brown) also played back there and played well. We were able to substitute girls back there all day and that helped keep everyone refreshed.”

Elmore County only lost one set the entire game. The Lady Panthers opened the tournament with back-to-back matches against Booker T. Washington and Horseshoe Bend at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and the Lady Panthers took both games, 2-0.

Elmore County then had a break until the bracket play began, and the Lady Panthers were seeded No. 3 in the tournament.

Elmore County beat Horseshoe Bend again, in the first round of the bracket play, and then faced Beauregard in the semifinals. Beauregard, another solid Class 5A team, took the second set against Elmore County but the Lady Panthers were too much in Set 3.

That set up the championship match with Wetumpka, which was the No. 1 seed. The Lady Indians swept through the day as well, beating Benjamin Russell, Brewbaker Tech and Tallassee in pool play.

Elmore County’s dominance in the tournament was set up by a tough early portion of the schedule. The Lady Panthers played handfuls of teams in higher classifications and high rankings, and lost early in the season.

But that’s prepared Elmore County for area play, which they are currently 3-0 in, and prepared them for tough matches against teams like Wetumpk and Beauregard.
