By Cliff Williams Staff WriterAverage gasoline prices in Alabama have fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.16 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,348 stations in Alabama.
Prices in Alabama are 21.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 29.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 2.9 cents in the last week and stands at $4.86 per gallon.
The Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce held its annual luncheon to install new officers and board members for the first time in a while Thursday.
The COVID-19 pandemic put a hamper on gatherings but the chamber celebrated the successes of business in Wetumpka.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Alabama was priced at $2.87 per gallon Sunday while the most expensive was $3.89 per gallon, a difference of $1.02 per gallon. The national average is up 0.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 59.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

ences in trends between regions,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Some West Coast states saw prices rise 35 to 55 cents per gallon in the last week as refinery issues continued to impact gasoline supply, which fell to its lowest level in a decade in the region, causing prices to skyrocket. While I’m hopeful there will eventually be relief, prices could go a bit higher before cooling off. In addition, OPEC could decide to cut oil production by a million barrels as the global economy slows down, potentially creating a catalyst that could push gas prices up further.”

GOP poised for congressional gains
For over 100 years, political history has revealed without deviation that when a Democrat wins the presidency in a presidential year, that in the following mid-term congressional elections two years later that Republicans make gains in the U.S. House of Representatives. That truism has become more pronounced in the last few decades.
This history will be repeated in the upcoming November 8 General Election. Every indication and polling suggest that the GOP gains in this year’s General Election will be significant.
In talking with people in the know in Washington, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that there will be major Republican gains in Congress. This prognosis is not only anticipated by Republican strategists but is even being acknowledged by Democrats on the Hill and throughout the nation. Moreover, even the liberal mainstream media is cognizant of this GOP sweep on the horizon.
Currently, the Democrats have a very slim 221 to 214 majority in the U.S. House. For some reason, probably because the tea leaves indicate a GOP takeover of the House, there is an inordinate number of Democratic congressmen retiring this year. This makes the pick-ups for the GOP more sustainable. Incumbency and seniority are omnipotent in Congress. Therefore, the likelihood of the GOP taking over the majority is enhanced by these retiring Democrats.
The conservative estimate by most experts is that there will be a 30 to 36 seat swing to the Republicans in November. If that estimate is accurate that would change the House from a 221 to 214 current Democratic majority to a Republican majority of 250 to 185. This solid Republican majority
STEVE FLOWERS Columnistwould change the philosophical tilt in the national arena. In today’s polarized, toxic, partisan environment both parties’ members of Congress vote lockstep along party lines. You may as well have a robot voting their congressional voting machines. It would be more efficient and economical. You would not have to have millions for congressional staffs or offices, which costs millions per congressman and their only duties anyway were to work to insure the congressman’s reelection every two years.
The early prognostication of a 30 to 36 seat pickup in Congress by Republicans has been tempered somewhat with the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This issue is not a winner for the GOP. Most Independent, a good many Republican, and almost all Democratic female voters are pro-choice. The striking illustration of this pro-choice leaning was revealed earlier this year when voters in ruby red Republican Kansas voted 60-40 against outlawing abortion in their state. This issue along with the Democratic socialist bailout money may have tempered the anticipated GOP congressional landslide. However, Democratic President Joe Biden’s approval ratings are abysmal. He is at historical low polling approvals, especially among all important Independent voters. The primary reason for Biden’s demise and the obvious elephant in the room is the out of control economic inflation rate on consumer spending in the country. It is approaching a 10% level. This is
devastating politically for Biden and the Democrats. Americans vote their pocketbook, especially in congressional elections.
Another detriment to Democrats is Biden’s first year decision to completely disregard immigration laws and create carte blanche open southern borders for every undocumented immigrant to invade the country and offer them all of the welfare and government privileges and services of state tax dollars. This open door infringement does not sit well with Republicans or Independents and probably not with some minority Democrats.
The liberal social agenda of House Democrats regarding LGBTQ issues appear over the top to most mainstream Christian Americans. If truth were known, even Eastern religions are not comfortable with these overt favorable treatment towards social mores. My observations of Southern African American people are that they are very Christian oriented and are Bible reading and do not adhere to this agenda either.
This congruence of economic, social and deficit spending is dovetailing into a devastating mid-term congressional wipeout for Democrats. This tsunami will probably spill over into the U.S. Senate, also.
The Senate is 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, dead even.
Republicans could win a majority in the upper chamber. It will be close. The key senate battles will be in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and our neighboring state of Georgia.
We will see in less than five weeks.

The broken window theory comes here
Although I’ve lived in Tallassee for a number of years and worked here even longer, I’ve never let go of my initial impression of our community as an idyllic little mill town. Certainly, it’s easy to see on a week like Homecoming – our town comes together and recognizes the class from 20 years ago and it’s celebrated with a bonfire, a candlelight ceremony, a parade and a couple of pep rallies – but there are those darker moments, too. These are the times in which you can see that even a small place like ours can somehow find itself dealing with issues that used to only affect big cities.
The Broken Window Theory is a widely circulated set of concerns first put forth by sociologists James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in 1982. Wilson and Kelling posited that small criminal acts within a community, such as graffiti and broken windows, create a breeding environment for greater and more serious crimes.
For example, an area with broken glass and graffiti might become a place where miscreants can congregate. Every family may not check on their children after dark. I think all of us are guilty of either being up to something at one time or another or being oblivious to the fact that people around us are up to something!
A British experiment tested the broken window theory, and these were the results.
An addressed envelope, visibly containing a €5 note (for us, let’s think of a $5 bill), was sticking out of a post office box. The first half of the experiment took place in a clean environment, with no broken glass nor graffiti. 13 percent of passersby went for the envelope.
MICHAEL BIRD ColumnistFor the second half of the test, graffiti was introduced on the post office box and the area around it was littered. In the second group, 27 percent of the people tried to grab the envelope. Over a quarter of the second-half participants tried to commit a crime just because the area looked like a place where a crime could be committed!
“One un-repaired broken window is a signal that no one cares, and so breaking more windows costs nothing,” Wilson and Kelling wrote.
One need look no further than an area in our own town: the East Tallassee Shopping Center.
Once home to several businesses including the Mill Store Number Two, there are still several businesses there including Godwin’s Flowers. Coach Godwin has been in business since 1971. His floral shop is located at the end of the block, and every year after the Homecoming parade, he is there with refreshments for all the parade participants. No questions asked, no expectation of a purchase, just a friendly gesture.
On the back wall of the East Tallassee Shopping Center, there is a disturbing growth in graffiti. It began in the summer of 2020, and for a while someone stayed after it by cleaning it up or painting over the words. But now, there is more than one person can handle.
It may seem petty to be disturbed by graffiti, but another example can be found on a STOP
sign near Southside Middle School.
Spraypainted across the sign is the word CIRPS. I believe the artist intended for it to say “Crips,” as in the street gang, but since they misspelled the name of the gang, it appears to be an advertisement for a breath mint like CERTS or something.
Vandalism leads to other small crimes that can become larger crimes. The question is, how much are you willing to accept? And what would you do if something important to you was destroyed or defaced by graffiti or broken glass?
Several years ago, the historical marker at the Fitzpatrick Bridge detailing the story of how Mount Vernon Mill No. 1 became the only Armory to survive the Civil War was defaced by vandals. Someone spraypainted the entire marker and made the tale of the Armory unreadable.
Local citizen Danny Phillips spent weeks up there, painstakingly cleaning and repainting the sign. Today, one would never know that the historical marker had ever been defaced.
My grass isn’t always cut to perfection, and my siding needs pressure-washing. There are plenty of things I could do in my classroom and at my job that would help. By no means am I pointing a finger at anyone – my former principal, Ron McDaniel, used to say, “for every finger I point at someone, I’ve got four pointing back at myself.”
There is no easy answer. A citizens brigade with jugs of bleach cannot take on an entire city. However, we cannot always just think that “someone else will take care of it.” It is our job as members of the community to take pride in what we call our own.
Pet of the Week – Phoebe
Phoebe is an elevenyear-old female Torti whose entire world was turned upside down when her loving owner passed away. Phoebe was petrified at first, but staff at the shelter have found she is an incredibly loving and sweet lady. They’ve also found is that Phoebe is perfectly fine with dogs (her two dog buddies have found their new homes) but she does not like other cats. Phoebe does like to hide but talks and rubs all around you and loves to be held and petted.
The staff doesn’t think
Phoebe has ever been around children, but older children should be fine. She has also likely never been around men, but the shelter is sure she can learn to love a man who loves her right back. Phoebe has been thoroughly vetted and has a clean bill of health and is a beautiful lady with many, many years of love yet to give. She can only go to an indoor only home.

Leif Erikson and the vikings
The Vikings were a group of people from Scandinavia who lived in what are now the areas of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Among these Vikings was the son of Erik the Red, Leif Erikson, who was the first known Scandinavian to reach North America around the year 1000 A.D. Erikson was born in Iceland and had family roots in Greenland. Today, many people with Scandinavian heritage celebrate Leif Erickson Day on October 9. Erikson and other Vikings sailed the seas of Europe from 700 to 1000 AD and were also known as Norsemen, or Northmen, because of where they originated from. At home they were farmers, but abroad they were fierce warriors at sea--the term Viking meant pirate. Vikings sailed in longships. These ships were long, double-ended vessels powered by many oars. Manpower was always abundant among the Viking raiders which made robbing and pillaging an easy task. They stole many riches as they conquered lands in Europe. Most Vikings were at sea because of overcrowding in their homelands. Although the Vikings all eventually converted
to Christianity, they originally believed in what is now referred to as Norse mythology centered on the Viking heaven, Valhalla. Vikings believed that this was the resting place of all Scandinavian warriors, especially those who died in battle. The leader of Valhalla was the god, Odin. Upon death, a Viking joined Odin’s army. Another popular character from Norse mythology, which has recently been depicted in popular movies, was the Norse god, Thor. Thor was said to have a hammer that only he could carry. History often depicts the Vikings’ attire to include helmets adorned with horns, yet there is no real evidence to support this theory. The celebration of the spirit of discovery, exploration, and bravery of Erikson was made official in The United States on September 2, 1964 when Congress declared October 9 Leif Erikson Day.

Mr. Rogers taught that the response of God to crisis is seen in the helpers. Whenever disaster or tragedy strikes, anyone wondering where God is in the midst of it needs only to look to the helpers. There you will find the image and presence of God.
This understanding should be all anyone needs to possess in order to be a helper. If we ever wonder if we should offer help to someone else, we can think on this teaching and have our answer. Are we our brother’s keeper? God’s answer is always yes.

Wetumpka’s Ingram signs NLI with Faulkner soccer program
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorWetumpka’s Ethan Ingram has always wanted to play college soccer, and now he will get the chance to do that.
Ingram, a senior defender for the Indians’ soccer team, signed his National Letter of Intent with Faulkner University last week. He is the first Wetumpka soccer player to sign with a college in recent history, and neither him or head coach Stephen Horn can remember the last player to do so.
“It’s an amazing feeling to get to play soc-

Horn, who has coached Ingram since he was in the eighth grade, agreed that the feat was amazing.
“It’s awesome to see him sign because he’s been here since he was in the eighth grade,” Horn said. “He’s been playing for us since then and he’s been starting for each of the last three years. We finally have a kid who

By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorTwo Former Wetumpka football stars will face each other this weekend in Montgomery.
JD Martin, a running back for Jackson State University, and Colton Adams, a linebacker for Alabama State, will face each other on Saturday, Oct. 2 as Alabama State plays hosts to Jackson State at 2 p.m.
The game will be a SWAC conference matchup and will serve as Alabama State’s homecoming game. The matchup will be televised on ESPN3 and will be on ESPNU at 9:30 p.m as a re-recording.
Martin, who helped lead Wetumpka to a AHSAA
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week is Wetumpka quarterback Nate Rogers.
Rogers earned 348 of the 585 total votes cast. He beat out Elmore County wide receiver Garrett Allen, who had 193 total votes. Edgewood Academy’s Gabe LeMaster earned 44 total votes this week.
Rogers, like he has done over and over again this season, shined in the Indians’ homecoming win over Greenville. In the 42-21 win last week, Rogers accumulated three touchdowns and over 100 yards both through the air and on the ground.
He completed 7 of his 16 pass attempts for 150 passing yards and a touchdown, and he rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns to complete his game.
This season, Martin is third on the team with 74 rushing yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. He is averaging 3.7 yards per carry and his longest run is nine yards.
He has also been effective in the passing game as he has recorded six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. He is seventh on the team in receptions.
Martin has helped lead Jackson State to a 4-0 record this season. The Tigers are 1-0 in conference play and they have been blowing out their opponents.
His performance helped the Indians move to 5-1 with the win against Greenville on Sept. 22.
He continued his play for another week and led his Indians to a win over Stanhope Elmore on Friday, Sept. 29. Wetumpka is now 6-1 and has already earned
more wins this year than they did all of last season.
Against Stanhope Elmore, Rogers threw a touchdown pass and caught a touchdown pass on a trick play. The Indians turn their sights to a matchup with Carver Montgomery this weekend.
A look at each region’s playoff race
As we enter Week 8 of the high school football season, the playoff picture is starting to clear up for each team in Elmore County.
DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorJust from the outside looking in, it looks like we may have a home game or two, while most teams make the playoffs. There may be one or two that don’t make it to the postseason, however.
There are a lot of scenarios left to be played with just four weeks of the regular season left. The point of this column is to give you all a better picture of what lies ahead for each team.
Hopefully we all have a better idea of what each team in Elmore County has the chance to do by the end of it.
Let’s start with Wetumpka, Stanhope Elmore, and the rest of AHSAA Class 6A, Region 2.
There are seven teams in Region 2. Carver Montgomery, Park Crossing, Pike Road, Russell County, Sidney Lanier, Stanhope, and Wetumpka.
Through three or four games each, there’s a decent understanding of how the region will end up. Stanhope Elmore currently has a 1-2 record, which is in fifth place and on the outside looking in.
Sidney Lanier is 2-1 right now and in fourth place. Stanhope and Lanier play this week. If Stanhope wins, the Mustangs will be in the fourth spot and will most likely be in the playoffs. The Mustangs need to win this weekend and win on Oct. 21 against Park Crossing.
If they can win those two games, they should be the No. 4 seed due to tiebreakers over the bottom three teams. If they lose either of those two games, it’s going to be a short season.
Wetumpka is currently in third place in the region standings with a 3-1 record. The Indians are behind Pike Road and Carver Montgomery, which are both 3-0.
Wetumpka plays Carver this Friday, which could very well determine which two teams are hosting a playoff game.
If Wetumpka wins this week, the Indians will be in a three-way tie for first place. If they lose, they’ll stay in third or fourth place and will have to wait and see what happens with Sidney Lanier.
Regardless, Wetumpka has won three region games already. They’ve basically locked in a playoff spot.
AHSAA Class 5A, Region 4
There are six teams in this region, including two area teams. Beauregard, Central Clay, Sylacauga, Valley, Elmore

County, and Tallassee.
Beauregard and Central Clay are both 3-0. They’ve already clinched playoff spots. Elmore County, Tallassee, and Valley are all three tied for third place with a 1-2 record.
Elmore County has lost to Central Clay and lost to Tallassee. They play Beauregard this Friday in what needs to be a must-win. If the Panthers lose this week, next week’s game at Valley will likely be a play-in game with the winner making the playoffs.
Losing to Tallassee really hurt the Panthers’ chances.
On the other hand, Tallassee could be sitting in a decent spot despite the 1-2 record. The Tigers have lost to both Beauregard and Central Clay, the two region leaders.
Tallassee gave itself a head-to-head tiebreaker with the win over Elmore County last week. If the Tigers beat Valley this Friday at home, they’re in the playoffs.
If they lose, they’ll have to beat Sylacauga next week and await results from Elmore County and Valley on Oct. 14. Nothing too complicated. Tallassee is in a decent spot. Elmore County has to work a little more.
AHSAA Class 5A, Region 3
This is another six-team region with Holtville being joined by Demopolis, Jemison, Marbury, Selma, and Shelby County. The Bulldogs are currently tied for second in the region with a 2-1 record.
Holtville is in a good spot. The Bulldogs have already beaten Jemison and Shelby County, and really just need one more win to secure a playoff spot. They play at Marbury this week, who is 0-3 in region play.
If Holtville beats Marbury this weekend, they’re in the playoffs. It’s as simple as that this week.
AISA Class AA Region 1
There are only five teams in this region, so Edgewood Academy only has four region games. They four teams joining the Wildcats are Chambers Academy, Abbeville Christian, Hooper Academy and Macon-East Academy.
Edgewood is currently 1-1 and tied for third place. The Wildcats are playing Macon-East (1-0) this week and then Hooper Academy (0-2) next week.
Win one game, and you’re in the playoffs. The Hooper game seems like the easiest, as they’ve already lost to a team Edgewood beat 40-0. But you play the games.
Just beat Hooper and you’re good, Edgewood. If you lose to them, madness will begin.
Playoff races are fun, and every single team in our area has a chance to be in one. We may have one or two slip through the cracks, but every team is in control of its own destiny right now.
It’s as easy as just winning.
bama State defense and currently leads the team in tackles.
Adams has a team-high 41 tackles this year, 10 more than the next closest defensive player. He has 19 solo tackles and 22 assists, while also tallying 3.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
With Adams leading the team, the Hornets have held three opponents to 13 points or less. Only one team
is earning his dues basically. He loves Faulkner and I don’t remember the last time we had a kid sign, so this is awesome.”
Ingram had two offers, and he chose Faulkner over a college in Mississippi. He got on the Faulkner radar via its recruiting coach, Matthew Tarpley.
Tarpley, as well as serving as the recruiting coach at Faulkner, is an assistant coach for the Tallassee high school program. He’s seen Ingram play for years at the high school level, and reached out to Ingram and told him he wanted Ingram to play at Faulkner.
So after staying in contact with coach Tarpley, Ingram decided he didn’t want to go anywhere else and committed.

TALLASSEE:

Tallassee beat Elmore County, 26-20, last week; Valley lost to Central Clay, 12-6.
Both teams are 1-2 in AHSAA Class 5A, Region 4 this year.

ly, really like their program,” Ingram said. “I like the way they build their attacks up from the defense and the energy that they play with is amazing. I really like the college. Faulkner felt like the place I wanted to be.”
Building the attack from the defense is something that Ingram already succeeds at in high school. He plays in the center of the defense, so he is the one who starts the attacks and passes the ball to the midfielders.
His goal for his senior year is to get build up his touches, and to get faster at making his passes. With the speed of his passes increasing, he also wants to work on his pass accuracy.
Those skills, along with just his pure speed, makes Horn believe he can be great at the next level.
“He’s really, really fast for a center back,” Horn said. “He’s very tenacious and he plays with a lot of passion. That’s really what separates him from other players at the high school level.”

PUZZLES & HOROSCOPE
ARIES (March 21-April 19) Someone older or more experienced might rain on your parade today. Perhaps they will say or do something that affects your possessions or your wealth. They might withhold permission for something. On the upside, this might be a chance to learn from the experience of someone older or wiser. In either case, keep your eyes open. Tonight: Listen to others.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) This is a tough day to deal with bosses, parents, the police and VIPs. If you ask them for something, their response will be, “Talk to the hand.” You might be caught off guard. You might get busted for something you did. Tread carefully! (What happened to yesterday’s great vibes?) Tonight: Show respect.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Travel plans might be interrupted today. Or perhaps rules and regulations will become an obstacle for you when traveling or dealing with higher education, publishing, medicine or the law. Something will probably stop you in your tracks. Stay positive. Tonight: Pay attention.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Check banking and nancial matters, because something unexpected will occur today. You might suddenly have trouble accessing money or resources that you expected to get. Obstacles and problems are likely. Fortunately, a family member might help and come through for you. Tonight: Be helpful.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Although partners and close friends might throw cold water on your suggestions, ironically, you might be able to pull something together today. This is because you are convincing and persuasive. Nevertheless, an authority gure might catch you off guard. Caution. Don’t get rattled if someone tries to pull rank. Tonight: Cooperate. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Work-related issues with other countries or people from other cultures might encounter some speed bumps today. Something might be canceled or blocked. Supervisors might be on your case. Fortunately, on the whole, nancial matters are favored. Go with
what works and be careful. Tonight: Follow rules. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Parents should be vigilant today because this might be an accident-prone day for your kids. Be aware of this. Meanwhile, social plans might suddenly change. Rules, regulations or obstacles might affect sports, social events and children. Check the facts and details beforehand. Tonight: Relax. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Stock the fridge, because something unusual might take place at home today. Surprise company might drop by or a parent or an older family member might make demands on your time. Prepare for the unexpected. (Food and drink always help.) Tonight: Be ready.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Pay attention to everything you say and do, because this is a mildly accident-prone day for you. Meanwhile, it’s easy to get caught up in a negative narrative, which creates worry. Don’t do this to yourself. Mark Twain said, “Some of the worst things in my life never even happened.” Tonight: Stay positive.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Keep an eye on your nances, because this is a tricky day for money. You might nd money; you might lose money. Likewise, do what you can to protect your belongings from loss, theft or damage. Be alert! (The world needs more lerts.)
Tonight: Observe.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Today you feel more conservative and more low-key. Yet ironically, you also might feel rebellious, or something unexpected might happen. It’s denitely a mixed bag. Slow down and be aware of everything happening around you. If something unexpected occurs, don’t overreact. Take it easy. Tonight: Be open. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Today you might feel cut off from others, kinda lonely. Quite possibly, it is you who is choosing not to reach out to others. You might even want to hide. (It’s one of those days.) Perhaps something going on behind the scenes makes you feel unsure about something. Relax. Tonight: Enjoy solitude.

DISPLAYING HISTORY
Good Hope Baptist turns 175 years old
By KAITLIN FLEMING Managing EditorOn October 1, 1847, a group of 13 men and women gathered in Eclectic, Alabama to establish Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Good Hope. James Thompson, J. C. Ingram, John Ware, Young D. Harrington, Robert Stewart, Priscilla Thompson, Mary Ingram, Mary L. Thompson, Rebecca Ware, Tabitha Harrington, Clarissa Jackson, Hartha Higginson and Mary Stewart became the charter members of what is now known as Good Hope Baptist Church.
It wasn’t until November 8, 1848 that the members received their first building — a wooden structure with wooden shutters and windows that the church would outgrow one hundred years later.
In 1948 the congregation undertook a building project that would be completed a year later, on July 31, 1949. The total cost of the new brick facility was $24,451.80 and when the building was dedicated on July 31, the church was debt free.
The original building built for $600 in the mid 1800s was dismantled and the wood used for the new building. In the meantime, the church met in the Flea Hop Community House while the new church was constructed.
The church didn’t stop growing there. The congregation continued to outgrow the facilities and in 1967, more room was needed, and an annex was constructed on the east side of the church for more Sunday School classes, a pastor’s office and large fellowship room for gathering.
The cost for the annex was $12,000. The church underwent the improvements, debt free once again, and work was completed by members of the church for the most part.
The 1990s saw even more growth and building improvements for the church.
In 1991 a committee was formed to
plan construction on the west side of the building. Due to costs, the church decided to divide the improvements into two phases. The addition included an unfinished basement area, and the west wing of Sunday School classes was completed in May 1992 at a cost of $118,000. A 10-year loan was made to complete the addition, and it was paid in full by May of 1994. In 1996, the second phase was completed which included renovating the fellowship hall and basement area. The cost for this project was $43,374 and was completed in September 1997.
It was long after the renovations were completed in September 1997 that planning commenced on a new building, the majority of which is still used to this day.
In May 2000, a committee was formed to move forward on erecting a new structure on the 15.53 acres near the original church that had been purchased in October 1998 by auction for $57,750. After three years of prayer and planning, a new facility was becoming reality.
The groundbreaking was April 24, 2004, and the first service was held in the new facility on Easter 2005. The cost this time was $1.8 million.
The church finished up a round of
improvements in 2011 with the addition of a new wing of Sunday School classes, expansion of the sanctuary and the addition of a Family Life Center. The debt for the new church and the additions has since been paid in full and Good Hope Baptist Church is now debt free. A feat that Fran Taylor, a secretary for the church and a member since 1988, says was all God’s work.
“God has been faithful to us,” Taylor said. “When the church was first built, it was paid off quick. To God be the glory. All of it is the faithfulness of God. It was nothing that we did.”
The 175-year-old congregation has decided for their anniversary celebrations this year, they will “emphasize how God has been faithful” to them.
The celebrations kicked off on October 2 but will go on for quite some time. A large celebration will be held November 20. The church will host a worship service at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon, a display of church memorabilia, choir singing and even more.
Taylor is asking anyone and everyone with any ties to the church, current or past, to donate whatever they may have in way of memorabilia, photographs, church history or stories
relating to Good Hope Baptist Church.
The request is quite a task, as the church’s website states the congregations has over 600 members, but Taylor is hopeful that they can get in useful items to share with their current members.
MISSION MINDED
According to Taylor and the original name of the church, the congregation is “mission-minded.” The members volunteer their time to their community and to different communities through mission trips.
“Our church is very mission-minded,” Taylor said. “We’re supposed to reach out to others and help them become more like Christ. Every church is supposed to be like that.”
The Good Hope Baptist Church hosts several community events every year, including the upcoming Fall Festival on October 30. The church will have bounce houses, hayrides, trunk or treat, food and more for the event.
Taylor also mentioned the church’s annual July 4 celebration and community event.
CHURCH LEADERSHIP
Taylor spoke about the strong leadership the church has had over the years, including pastor Kenneth Hill who has been serving in his capacity for over 20 years.
She also mentioned Tim Lawrence, the church’s minister of music who has also been there for 20 years and Davy Kincaid, the minister of youth and children.
“Having ministers and leaders involved with children influenced the growth of the church,” said Taylor.
“The children of the church become the adults of the church.”
Anyone interested in donating items or discussing the history of the church may call Fran Taylor at 334-399-4724 or Libbye McGhee at 334-312-0610.
