A virtual teacher at Elmore County School’s Edge program has been arrested and charged with school employee distributing obscene material to a student.

Jackie Sumners isn’t native to Wetumpka but can remember the opening of the Bibb Graves Bridge.

Sumners celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family at the Jeanette Barrett Civic Room.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Emmanuel Andre Wilson II, 32, of Montgomery turned himself into authorities Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson was the head basketball coach at Holtville High School and was placed on administrative leave Jan. 13 according to Elmore County Schools superintendent Richard Dennis.

According to Wetumpka police chief Greg Benton, this was not a random shooting.

“He was inspired by the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, South Carolina and the wildlife arts festival in Thomasville,” Eifert said. “He wants that for Wetumpka.”

Sumners said there are a few simple things to follow to live a long life.

“You got to live good,” Sumners said. “You got to roll with the punches.”

General election is upon us

Believe it or not, our 2022 General Election is upon us, November 8 to be exact. It seems to be going under the radar screen of most Alabama voters. There will be a record breaking low voter turnout because there are really no contested statewide races. Why? Because we are a one party state when it comes to state offices. All 21 of our state elective offices are held by Republicans.

The Democratic party does not field serious candidates because it is a foregone conclusion that a Democrat cannot win an elective statewide races in the Heart of Dixie. The best they can hope for is 40 percent.

Thus, the Democratic candidates have no money to spend because nobody takes them seriously, and the Republican candidates, who are flush with campaign cash, do not want to waste their money because it is a foregone conclusion that they are going to win. Therefore, with not much money being spent for advertising, the average voter may not realize there is an election, which equals a very low turnout.

The real 2022 election was held in May and June when the Republican Primary took place. Winning the Republican Primary is tantamount to election in Alabama. Just because the real 2022 election was held in May instead of November does not mean it is not an important election. It is a very important election. All of our constitutional statewide offices are being elected for the next four years, including Governor, Attorney General, State Agriculture Commissioner, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer and State Auditor.

Governor Kay Ivey is the Republican nominee for Governor.

She is seeking her second full term. This will probably be Kay’s last hurrah. She will win 60 to 40.

State Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate is the Republican nominee for this important Alabama post. He will be reelected 60 to 40. He did not even have an opponent in the Republican Primary.

Attorney General Steve Marshall is seeking his second term. He is a solid conservative Republican and will win easily.

Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth is going to be reelected to his second term on November 8. Like Marshall, there is no doubt that he is conservative.

Marshall and Ainsworth are young and formidable. They are also from the same county. It would be interesting if they faced off against each other in the 2026 Governor’s race.

Young Boozer will be elected to his third term as State Treasurer. He served two consecutive fouryear terms, waited three years, took over from John McMillan a year ago, and will win another full term on November 8. He has done a tremendous job as Treasurer and is probably the most qualified person to ever serve as Treasurer in my lifetime. He will more than likely have the longest tenure as State Treasurer in state history.

Two young Republicans were elected to constitutional offices in June, Wes Allen as Secretary of State and Andrew Sorrell as State Auditor. Both have bright futures

in Alabama politics.

Even though he is only 46, Wes Allen has already spent 15 years in elected office. He was Probate Judge of Pike County for 11 years and State Representative for Pike and Dale for 4 years. Secretary of State is an important post in state government.

There will be jockeying among Ainsworth, Marshall, Pate, Allen and Sorrell to see who gets the most votes on November 8 as all are eyeing the 2026 races. All have Libertarian opponents.

Forty-year old Katie Britt will be elected to her first of many to come six-year terms as our United States Senator. She will more than likely be the top vote getter on November 8. She is already being touted as a superstar in Washington.

For those of you who do vote, we have some important Constitutional Amendments on the ballot. Our original 1901 Constitution may be one of the most flawed and is the most amended in the nation. There is outdated, overtly racist language in our Constitution that has no relevance in today’s world and needs amending out.

The Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform, a group of outstanding Alabama leaders, has worked diligently to update our antiquated Constitution. I would encourage a “Yes” vote for the first constitutional amendment on the November ballot.

Moving on to new chapters

W

ith a blessed heart, I pen today’s editorial, one of my last official acts as the publisher of Tallapoosa Publishers, Inc.

Next week I will be moving on to a new chapter of my life when I start retirement in South Dakota. Yes, it will be cold, but as I told the staff, one does not get to choose where your grandkids live.

Since I was hired as publisher of Tallapoosa Publishers, Inc, I have been able to really understand, over time, the culture and fabric that makes this community special.

Despite some tough economic challenges, the communities we serve have exhibited an admirable resiliency, rebounding into thriving communities with promising futures. I admire the fortitude of many groups, including the chambers of commerce, area city councils, business leaders, and city administrators whose neversay-die attitude helped make that

possible.

Looking back, I am proud of the many things we accomplished, including major changes in our digital presence, the incredible recognition we received from the Alabama Press Association which includes four consecutive General Excellence awards, and most importantly, assembling a team of VERY good people.

Editorially, we put out a fine product that focuses on being the local comprehensive source of news and information. Our community and our readers have embraced these efforts as our digital circulation is growing by leaps and bounds. With the tremendous growth of our digital

components, we cement Tallapoosa Publishers, Inc. as the most attractive advertising avenue for area businesses.

I’m so proud of the tremendous progress made by TPI since the day I first walked through the doors. Although those improvements happened while I was here, they were the result of a team of caring, devoted people. Most have lived in Tallapoosa and Elmore counties all their lives and are dedicated to providing you with a great community newspaper. Rest assured that drive and dedication will remain long after I walk out the door the final time.

I hope you continue to embrace your local newspaper, as it really is your paper. I would like to express my gratitude to the community and Kenneth and Mary Lyman Boone for making Kim and me feel at home. I wish you nothing but the best in the future. I truly thank you for six and a half very special years.

Neptune is a Lab/Pit looking mix, male, almost nine-months old, about 45 lbs. He came to the shelter as a stray and is a bit shy in nature but not timid. He is playful but not hyper, loves attention and treats — but who doesn’t! Just a wonderful young dog seeking a family he can call his own.

Perhaps make a special ‘pet candy bowl’ with small doggy or kitty treats that your children can safely share with them they have their own ‘treats.’

Glow sticks & rings help our children be more visible but best kept out of reach of pets as the contents are very bitter and could cause distress to your pet if chewed.

Wild and fun costumes are part of the holiday, but our pets may not feel the same way and could become scared of even protective so best to keep your pets safely apart from humans in odd and scary costumes. Keeping them separate from party antics will also help protect them from being fed inappropriate food, treats and candy by kind, but uninformed party guests.

Some pets are fine wearing a costume while others find it quite stressful. If you do dress

up your pet, make sure the costume doesn’t constrict its movement, hearing or breathing. Never leave a pet wearing a costume unattended and also check to make sure there are no dangling pieces that your pet could get caught in or chew on. And if your pet seems distressed then please don’t force your pet to stay in a costume.

Please also keep your pets in another room or part of the house if you are opening your door for trick-or-treaters! It would be easy for a pet to escape, and we certainly don’t want a pet to be freaked out by scores of children in all manner of costumes resulting in either a lost pet or, worse, a bite. And make sure pets and ‘candle lit’ Halloween decorations are not left alone to help prevent them being knocked over and an accidental fire!

And just to be safe, make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case it does escape through an open door while you’re distracted with trickor-treaters.

Every year on October 31, children of all ages enjoy Halloween. This fun holiday occurs each year in the United States and is a fun day for many people. Adults and kids dress up in costumes, and children often go door-to-door in their neighborhoods in the evenings to receive candies and treats after saying “Trick or Treat!” Today, the most important thing to remember when “Trick or Treating” is safety. Many kids no longer go door-to-door. Instead, they attend “Trick or Treating” events at places such as malls, churches, and community centers. When going out, be sure to always have a large group of people with you at all times, and remember to include an adult. Wear costumes that are bright in color, and use a reflector if you are walking in the dark. After the fun and before you enjoy your treats, have a trusted adult verify that your candy is safe to eat. Be courteous to other “Trick or Treaters” and to those who hand out candy. Don’t forget to say “Thank you!”

Wetumpka’s Jackson commits to Troy football

Dorion Jackson had never played defense before this season began, but the senior safety has already seen the position change pay off.

Jackson, a senior at Wetumpka, recently committed to play college football at Troy University.

“I’ve been dreaming about this since I first stepped on the field at six years old,” Jackson said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s the constant love they always give me. Half of our

coaching staff went to Troy, so why not? It’s close to home. It’s home sweet home. You can’t ask for anything better.”

Jackson began talking to the Troy coaching staff this summer when he attended a camp on June 11. He impressed the coaches at a 7-on-7 with his ball skills, but Jackson had no film of him playing as a safety.

So coach Jon Sumrall and company asked him to continue to send them film of him tackling throughout this season. So after

sending the Troy coaching staff all the film and highlight plays he’s made this season, he finally got the offer he was searching for.

“They pulled me into the office and told me that I did exactly what they wanted me to do. I got them the film that they wanted me to get, and they offered me. They asked me to show them that I can tackle, and I showed them.”

It should be a fun basketball season

Football season is coming to an end, and basketball season is right around the corner.

Basketball teams around the county were able to begin practice last week on Monday, Oct. 17. I have been on my honeymoon, so that’s why there hasn’t been any practice or preseason stories.

But I am scheduled to come back on the day this column comes out, so I wrote this column ahead of time. None of you probably care, but here’s my pre-season thoughts on each team around the county.

WETUMPKA

Wetumpka enters this basketball season with some questions on both the boys and the girls teams. Both teams have a new head coach and lost some key players from last year’s team. The only solid for each team, however, is that they both return an extremely talented guard.

Nate Rogers returns for the boys after averaging over 20 points per game this year, but the Indians will need a big to step in and take the place of PJ Merkerson, who averaged 20+ last year but graduated.

One high scoring point guard can’t carry you in 6A. Have to find someone else.

On the girls side of things, do-it-all Zariah Fannin returns after averaging 14 points, 5

the coaching staff has shown him nothing but love since he began talks with them.

After every game, the Troy staff reaches out and sends a letter and just keeps in contact. At the last camp Jackson attended, coach asked for some film of him making tackles and making plays on the defensive side of the ball.

So when Sumrall offered him, he committed the same day. Not only did he appreciate all the constant support from the staff, but he thinks he can make a real difference on the Troy defense.

“I think I bring great ball skills to their defense and I can tackle,” Jackson said. “I don’t shy away from contact. There aren’t many tall safeties like me that can move like I can.”

Jackson could never have imagined signing to play college to be a safety even two years ago. During the COVID-19 season in 2020, he was forced to play in the defensive secondary because of players sitting out.

He played well, but moved right back over to offense after the regular starters came back from sitting out. During his junior season in 2021, Jackson played strictly offense and recorded nine catches and over 100 yards.

When Bear Woods took over as head coach, he expected it to happen because of how defensive-minded Woods is. He was still shocked, but he’s now happier than he could ever be on offense.

“I’m thankful for the position change,” Jackson said. “It makes the game fun. Every play, you get to come up and demolish someone. There’s just a great energy you get from defense in general. You get to violently take the ball away from people all the time.”

BASKETBALL

AUSTIN CHAMPION, FOOTBALL School: Edgewood Academy

Last week: Edgewood seems to be peaking at the right time, and it is due in large part by excellent quarterback play. Much like Stephenson, Champion exploded on Thursday with 159 yards passing and three touchdowns, adding a team-high 67 yards on the ground and a score. Champion did miss four of his

They’re coming off their best year under head coach Kelvin Stokes. We’ll see if they can keep improving.

On the boy’s team, Stanhope was easily the most diverse and spread out team last season with nearly six players averaging double digits. About half of those kids return this year, and the team will be highlighted by Josiah Scott and Dillon Barnes.

HOLTVILLE

Holtville’s boys team easily has the biggest question mark entering the season. The Bulldogs have a brand new coach this year and they lost their top six leading scorers. Every player that played prominent

The girls team should be better. The Lady Bulldogs set the record for the most wins in a single season in school history last year, and they return nearly every single player on the roster. If Holly Smith, Ana Brown and others can keep improving, they can be a force.

ELMORE COUNTY Both of Elmore County’s teams will be good again this year, especially from the guard po sition. The boys lost two bigs in Cole Downey and Zion Reed, but Player of the Year Payton Stephenson can score at will and fellow point guard Garrett Allen will be with him. They’ll make some noise.

The girls lost three really good seniors in CK Bolton, Bri Autrey and Seanna O’Daniel, but they return some talent. Junior guard Kyasia Brown started to make a name for herself midway through the season, and the Lady Panthers had a plethora of young talent.

TALLASSEE

Tallassee’s girls can’t be much worse than they were last year, no offense. They graduated a few seniors, but they return the bulk of their team and they welcome in a new head coach in LD Bell. Everything I’ve heard of Bell is positive and my interactions have been positive, plus I see them putting in work on social media a lot. Should be an improved year.

The Tallassee boys

lost the area’s leading scorer last year when guard Jalyn Daniels graduated. He was the heart and soul of the team last year, but the Tigers seem to always replenish great guards a nd scorers every season. A lot of multi-sport athletes return this season when football season ends, so be on the lookout for them.

EDGEWOOD ACADEMY

Edgewood’s girls had the best season around the county last year and they had the best season in school history as they claimed the first girls basketball state championship. They lost three players and their head coach from last year, but the bulk of the team returns.

Darryl Free takes over the girls program as well as the boys, and as long as Lindsey Brown and Jaylyn Str ength are there, the girls basketball team should be the favorite to win again.

I would also not be surprised to see the Edgewood boys be one of the favorites to win the championship this year as well. Free has done a fantastic job coaching them, and they came pretty close last year when they lost in the semifinals by less than 10 points.

Guards Austin Champion and Cooper Hall, both all-county selections last year, are back to lead the Wildcats while they return every single player.

The team started three juniors and two eighth graders last year. Keep an eye on them.

Elmore County Commissioner Bart Mercer will serve as the chairman of the Elmore County Commission as commissioner Troy Stubbs steps down to assume his role representing District 31 in the Alabama House of Representatives.

Stubbs is the Republican nominee and faces no opposition for the seat in Montgomery in next month’s election.

“My last day as a county commissioner will be Nov. 7,” Stubbs said at Monday’s Elmore County Commission meeting. “However this is the last county commission meeting I will participate in.”

Commissioners praised Stubbs for his six years of service to the Elmore County Commission most of which was as chairman.

“We could all talk for a long time,” fellow commissioner Mack Daugherty said. “Thank you so much for what you meant to this commission and the citizens.”

Daugherty said he will still work with Stubbs going forward in his new position.

“This is not the end of our relationship,” Daughertyy said. “We look forward

to visiting you at the state house with a long list of needs from Elmore County.”

Mercer was elected to the commission two years after Stubbs but Mercer spoke with Stubbs before either served and as Mercer decided to campaign for the commission.

“We started this life journey together,” Mercer said. “It has been an honor to serve with him.”

Commissioner Desirae Lewis Jacson said Stubbs was instrumental in educating her and Henry Hines on the way to serve as a county commissioner.

“When we came in, you led us and made sure we didn’t make any errors,” Jackson said. “You treat everyone right and the same.”

Stubbs thanked his family, fellow commissioners and employees of Elmore County.

“I have learned a lot along the way,” Stubbs said. “When we made the decision to move here and put down roots, my wife told me to quit complaining and do something about it. I did but I don’t think this is what she meant.”

Daugherty nominated Mercer citing Mercer’s experience and Mercer was unanimously approved by the commission to be chairman.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Mercer said. “We look forward to him serving us in the legislature. It takes us all working together to move Elmore County forward.”

Mercer appointed Daugherty to continue service as vice-chair of the Elmore County Commission.

The governor’s office is responsible for selecting Stubbs’ replacement on the commission.

Local legislation sought to move to an appointed Elmore County Board of Education Superintendent

The Elmore County Board of Education recently met to discuss moving from an elected superintendent to an appointed one.

“There was much discussion and a resolution passed by the Elmore County Board of Education to make modifications to the superintendent position, specifically for that position to become an appointed position rather than an elected position,” Stubbs said. “There are many statistics supporting this, specifically we are one of the few remaining counties in Alabama that have an elected superintendent. Alabama is one of less than five states that has elected superintendents.”

The commission approved the board of education’s request seeking local legislation for the matter. It now will be presented to local legislators to take up in the Alabama legislature.

Recognizing domestic violence

The commission approved a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Family Sunshine Center Executive Director Tay Knight spoke to the commission about the importance of awareness on the issue.

“One of the things about domestic violence is it is not always physical,” Knight said. “It can be emotional, financial abuse. We know domestic violence is not limited to any one group.”

Knight said the center served about 1,400 individuals in the last year involved in domestic violence situations. The center currently has a home with 24 beds serving 35 individuals and another 30 individuals in transitional housing.

In other action the Elmore County Commission:

• Approved minutes of the Oct. 11 meeting.

• Approved warrants from Oct. 1 to Oct. 14 in the amount of $3,803,489.

• Postponed a public hearing for a retail beer off premises transfer license for Holley Mart 6 to G Mart by Georgia Road LLC in Eclectic due to an advertising issue to 5 p.m. Nov. 14.

• Approved Operation Green Light resolution to help bring awareness to veterans and veterans issues.

• Approved advertising for the continuation of a lodging tax.

• Approved a memorandum of understanding with the Alabama Department of Corrections for maintenance of Marion Spillway Road.

• Rejected all bids for renovations to Hohenberg Field as bids greatly exceeded estimated costs. The renovations are a joint project between the Elmore County Commission, Elmore County Board of Education and the City of Wetumpka.

• Approved a bid for a dry bulk tanker for public works.

• Was reminded the Elmore County Administrative Complex would be closed Friday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. The complex will also close at noon Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Friday, Nov. 25 for Thanksgiving and will reopen Monday, Nov. 28.

The next meeting of the Elmore County Commission is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14.
