Firstly, We would like to acknowledge and honor the land we plan to build the community of Grove with. It is home and habitat for magnificent old growth Firs and Pines, Ravens, Elk, Fungi, Geraniums, Whitetail Deer, Soils and so much more. We thank and ask the land for people to join this natural community and call it Home. We also acknowledge the disturbance this project can cause to the land. We aim to minimize and offset this disturbance by designing something that has a positive impact on the land, families, and community. We hope this project can be an exemplary starting point for a shift in how development is done and a challenge to conventional development to positively impact the greater community, ecosystem, and families whom will call it home. This challenge continues to inspire the creation of Grove. With Appreciation,

¿What is Grove? -A community that preserves and restores the natural ecosystem while introducing optimal living for both the human and non-human.
For a paradigmatic shift with a regenerative future and thriving forests we must look for the recognition of our elders and their knowledge.
-Twentyfive acres of biodiverse land with a well balanced flow of plant and wildlife that allows the harmonious coexistence between natural living ecosystems. -Fifteen living-building homes that recycle water, produce energy and share communal pathways and roads. These homes encircle a restored central wetland (pond) that services the greater habitat. -One Seed Barn that creates biodynamic space for co-work and co-creation, family gatherings, social impact events and a greenhouse for food growth. The barn will be beneficial impact for the watershed it belongs to.

Story of Big Sky 12
Every place is unique and has its own story to tell and in order to live harmoniously with it, we must learn to listen. From Geology to Urban Analysis, every piece of information can be transformed into principles of design. This place is a beautiful open canvas, a space that is primed for optimal living with dynamic people to flourish in a way they see fit. Being aware of its own Story will enable stewards to be creative within it.

Biology
The Gallatin Watershed is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, which is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states. In addition to having a diversity of small animals, the National Park of Yellowstone is notable for its predator–prey complex of large mammals, including eight ungulate species (bighorn sheep, bison, elk, moose, mountain goats, mule deer, pronghorn, and white-tailed deer) and seven large predators (black bears, Canada lynx, coyotes, grizzly bears, mountain lions, wolverines, and wolves).

Records of bird sightings have been kept in Yellowstone since its establishment in 1872. These records document nearly 300 species of birds to date, including raptors, songbirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl. The variation in elevation and broad array of habitat types found within Yellowstone contribute to the relatively high diversity. Many of the birds are migratory species. Reptiles are less studied than amphibians in Yellowstone. There are 6 confrmed species: bullsnake, prairie rattlesnake, rubber boa, sagebrush lizard, common garter snake and terrestrial garter snake. And 5 species of amphibians: Western tiger salamander, boreal chorus frog, Western toad, Columbia spotted frog, and plains spadefoot toad.

United States Main Watersheds
National Parks 34
The United States has 63 protected areas designated and known as national parks that are operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. National parks must be established by an act of the United States Congress.
35
National parks are designated for their natural beauty, unique geological features, diverse ecosystems, and recreational opportunities. National monuments, on the other hand, are frequently chosen for their historical or archaeological significance. While legislatively all units of the National Park System are considered equal with the same mission, national parks are generally larger and more of a destination, and hunting and extractive activities are prohibited. Montana lists 8 out of 63 National Parks and its imperative to be aware of the relevance they have in the sorrounding ecosystem.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
LEWIS & CLARK.
Crown of the Continent. Glacier’s pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and spectacular lakes are a great experience. With over 700 miles of trails, Glacier is a hiker’s paradise for adventurous visitors seeking wilderness and solitude.
The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is approximately 4,900 miles long, extending from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the mouth of the Columbia River, near present day Astoria, Oregon. It follows the historic outbound and inbound routes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as the preparatory section from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Wood River, Illinois.
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic wonders. In the depths of winter, the hot springs of Yellowstone appear as colorful jewels amongst the snow.
BIGHORN CANYON. National Recreation Area The vast, wild landscape of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area offers visitors unparalleled opportunities to immerse themselves in the natural world, and experience the wonders of this extraordinary place. With over 120,000 acres, one can find an astounding diversity in ecosystems, wildlife, and more than 10,000 years of human history to explore.
BIG HOLE NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD On August 9, 1877 gun shots shattered a chilly dawn on a sleeping camp of Nez Perce. By the time the smoke cleared on August 10, almost 90 Nez Perce were dead along with 31 soldiers and volunteers. Big Hole National Battlefield was created to honor all who were there.

GRANT-KOHRS RANCH. National historic site
Wide open spaces, the hardworking cowboy, his spirited cow pony, and vast herds of cattle are among the strongest symbols of the American West. Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site preserves these symbols and commemorates the role of cattlemen in American history.
NEZ PERCE.
National historical park Since time immemorial, the valleys, prairies, mountains, and plateaus of the inland northwest have been home to the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people. Extremely resilient, they survived the settling of the United States and adapted to a changed world. Nez Perce National Historical Park consists of 38 places important to the history and culture of the Nimiipuu.
LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD. National monument
This area memorializes the US Army’s 7th Cavalry and the Lakotas and Cheyennes in one of the Indian’s last armed efforts to preserve their way of life. Here on June 25 and 26 of 1876, 263 soldiers, including Lt. Col. George A. Custer and attached personnel of the US Army, died fighting several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors.

Integrated Design Process
38
Like every other process, design takes time and gets influenced by every person involved in it. The multifactorial nature of a project like this is always a challenge but in the end, is also its greatest strength. This series of back and forward iterations that we call Integrated Design Process (IDP) assembles a larger number of specialists in different and yet complementary subjects to define, evolve and refine every aspect of the global design. Despite the physical distance between the team members, work has been enhanced in digital environments in which collaboration is perfectly feasible.

Conceptual: Work Shaping. 42
After data collection, conceptualization becomes the most important aspect of design. This stage provides cohesion and a set of guidelines regarding the scope of work and the desired outcome where concepts is shaped in collaborative sessions. The most important aspects in this stage is the bifurcation of design subjects, although masterplan is still the main focus, housing units take their own relevance and design exploration starts.

Architectonic: Concept as a form 50
After numerous iterations, masterplan and housing units derive in a architectonic scale. Roofs, windows, materials and most important of all, interaction between them. This last stage before drawing construction documents is, perhaps, the most intense regarding collaborative work.

Wetland restoration 54
Conceptually, wetland restoration was always the main topic in masterplan design. Since very early schemes, potential arrangements revolved around optimal hydrological performances. Natural water flow and projected water cycles were primary subjects to design and for early construction work on site.

Energy performance By Daniel Ibarra
62
Preliminary environmental considerations synthesis. The historic weather data was analyzed using the Bozeman Yellowstone Int. Ap. located 36 miles from Big Sky in order to establish the environmental design goals. During 2/3 of the year, the climate is too harsh to suggest any passive means to achieve comfort, during this period the design will aim to reduce the heating loads, focusing on energy efficiency and during the moderate and warm period during summer, the design will aim to achieve thermal comfort by passive means. The main strategies suggested after a rst round of parametric studies, were to procure south and west orientations to beneffit from the solar heat gains. An ideal window to wall ratio (WWR) was suggested for each orientation. Double glassing for all the orientation should be applied into the construction set adding up, air tightness and high insulation. High insulation can be achieved by many means; the design team chose thatch walls for some of the facades which has proven to be a thermal and sustainable material. Thermal Mass strategically placed in the interior can help to retain heat gains during winter and fresh up during summer, in combination with a proper natural ventilation strategy. A solarium was integrated into the upper floor linking the staircase, this guarantees even heat distribution during winter, and during summer it will function as a chimney exploiting the 37 stack effect During the future design stages, the environmental design team will evaluate the impact on thermal comfort and energy performance of specific design features, assisting the design to achieve our sustainability goals.

Concept
Mimicking the way tree groves are a small unit that reflects and improve the nature around the place, we want to create house groves that associate with nature and enhance its ecosystem by honoring and merging into the natural energetic flow.
A legacy of prehistoric traditions of nature conservation, sacred groves are patches of forest that rural communities in the developing world protect and revere as sacrosanct. Deeply held spiritual beliefs ensure that not a tree is felled no a creature harmed within its boundaries. Treasure troves for naturalists, the groves often serve as the last refuge for magnificent and ancient trees, as well as for species of lianas, medicinal plants, macaques, deer, birds, lizards, frogs and other creatures that have become rare elsewhere in the landscape. -Madhav Gadgil Gr o v e Bi g S k y , M o n t a n a
In this natural landscape, the wetlands are the very centre of these homes and, just like branches of a tree, each one of them is interconnected by water in a harmonious way.

Particular ways of inhabiting these houses are possible thanks to a flexible room that has been designed to meet a large number of different dynamics inside the house. Families can adjust solariums to their specific needs. One can choose between an extra bedroom and a perfectly lighted workspace or between a tv room and a greenhouse.
