The first irrigation water rights in Colorado were granted in this area during the 1800's. This irrigation ditch is still in operation today. Los derechos de riego fueron concedidos. Los ductos siguen en funcionamiento hoy en dia.

1,830 - 1848 a.d.

Zebulon Pike came into San Luis Valley and was taken prisoner by the spanish. Zebulon Pike llega al Valle de San Luis y es tomado prisionero por los españoles.

The Old Spanish Trail, a major trade route, witnessed a brief but furious heyday between 1830 and 1848 as a trade route linking Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles, California. La antigua ruta española era una ruta de comercio que conectaba Santa fe, Nuevo Mexico y Los Angeles.

John Fremont led an expedition into the San Luis Valley during the winter, he is known to have gotten lost during his journey. John Fremont lidereo una expedicion al valle de San Luis en el invierno y es conocido por haberse perdido en su travesia.

First settled in 1851, the oldest town in Colorado, San Luis, is located in Costilla County in the southeastern part of the San Luis Valley. San Luis lies at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range with Culebra Peak at 14,047 feet above sea level in elevation towering above. San Luis es el poblado mas viejo de Colorado, situado en la parte sur-este del valle a los pies de la montaña Sangre de Cristo a unos 14,047 pies sobre el nivel del mar.

By 1878 the railroad had reached the newly founded Alamosa which soon became destined to be the rail hub for the area. Para 1878 llegan las redes ferroviarias a Alamosa convirtiendola en el nucleo ferroviario de la zona.

Parishioners established Our Lady of Guadalupe. The first building was erected in 1858 and was a jacal structure - a hut with a thatched roof and walls consisting of thin stakes driven into the ground close together and plastered with mud. With the discovery of gold and silver in the San Juan and La Garita mountains on the west side of the San Luis Valley, a huge influx of miners and adventurers entered the area. Con el descubrimiento de plata y oro en las montañas de San Juan y Garita en la zona oeste, llegaron mineros y aventureros a la zona.

The San Luis Valley is the 4th largest producer of potatoes in the U.S. San Luis es el 4to productor de papa en el pais.
