Present day state of the site: A landfill surrounded by beautiful mountains and a Bay
Baylands - Burden to Asset
The Bay Area is in a peculiar position. Not only is it facing serious threats of climate change and sea level rise, it is also highly prone to issues of social inequity and a massive housing crisis.
In such a dire scenario, the lack of interest in the development of 950 acres along the Bay is a massive burden on the region.
The proposed design attempts to acknowledge the existing barriers - physical, political and environmental - in the city of Brisbane and turn them into assets not only for the new city of Baylands, but for the entire region.

BURDEN
Baylands - Burden to Asset
CONTEXT
The site is full of barriers - physical, infrastructural, environmental and social. There is resistance from Brisbane in any kind of investment in upgrading its neighbor and a baggage of heavy infrastructural investment from the past. 7
CONTEXT
The site holds prime real estate, parts of which are in San Francisco county as well as San Mateo county. Baylands - Burden to Asset

LEARNING FROM HISTORY Construction of Highway 101

Introducing a lake and canal to combat Sea Level Rise
Rerouting 101 to free the waterfront
Beginning work on the green and blue to mend the toxic soil
The rerouting of 101 will be enabled by the landfill mountain that will be cut during the construction of the new landscape. 23

SPECIAL PLACES
The Geneva Avenue marks the only diagonal in the scheme. The avenue is a commercial corridor which has a wide linear park in the middle.
The edge of the Bay has water storage units and views to the Bay.
The Lake marks the edge of the Bayshore Blvd and offers gathering places.
The site offers places for reflection and recreation, apart from being self-sufficient in terms of public establishments. 31

With a new train station at the heart of the new development and various important public buildings sprinkled across the site, a bus network makes the public transit system robust and the site walkable. 35
CONNECTIVITY
Pedestrain Friendly Areas + Bike Routes
Pedestrian friendly regions close to the Canal and the Lake
Bike Lanes in all he major streets on site and along the Bay
The walkability is enhanced by a network of local parks, portions of the site reserved for pedestrians and ample room for bikers. Baylands - Burden to Asset
GIFTS TO BRISBANE
Since Brisbane was so stubborn about the status quo of the site, the new design offered some gifts to Brisbane residents so as to expedite the process and please this important Stakeholder. - A Regional Park -A new Train station - A Waste Management system - Access to the Bay 37

WIND
One 3MW windmill powers 1ooo units. 20 windmills for 20,000 units. Baylands - Burden to Asset
WASTE
Precedent: Hammarby Waste Management System
Each block has a waste disposal system. The network is connected underground to the Waste Management Facility on site. 49
WASTE WATER
Precedent: Hammarby Waste Management Plant
The Agriculture blocks process their waste water through living machines. The waste water on the rest of the site gets processed in the waste Management plant. The biofuel thus produced is used in cooking and the processed water is used for irrigation. Baylands - Burden to Asset
GRAY WATER
Precedent: Hammarby Waste Management Plant
The Agriculture blocks process their gray water through living machines. The gray water on the rest of the site gets processed in the waste Management plant. The biofuel thus produced is used in cooking and the processed water is used for irrigation. 51
