WHERE IS AGRIGENTO ?

Agrigento

is a city on

the

southern

coast of

Sicily (an

Island of

Italy) and

capital of

the

province

of

Agrigento.

It is

renowned

as the site

of the ancient Greek city of Akragas, one of the leading cities of Magna Graecia during the golden age of Ancient Greece. Population (31 December 2008): 59,136 of inhabitants

HISTORICAL PART : The Valley of the Temples


The colony of Agrigento The city of Agrigento lay the foundations in the year 581 B.C. by the inhabitants of the Islands of Rhodes and Crete. It was an economical and political center. Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the important cities in the Mediterranean world. Standing on terraced levels at the top of a plateau, with a city plan resembling a chessboard, Akragas was one of the largest Greek cities on the Mediterranean Sea.


The

Temples


One of the most famous historical attractions of Sicily is the Valley of the Temples, just outside Agrigento. The Valley of the Temples is considered a tourist destination and it is one of the most principal icons of the Island. It is the biggest archaeological and landscape park that covers an area of about 1300 hectares. All the site was inserted into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The Valley of the Temples is an archaeological site which consists of eight temples (and various other remains) , built between about 510 BC and 430 BC:

8) the Temple of Asclepius (the God of Medicine) The temples are divided into two groups to visit: -the first one is the eastern group which consists of three buildings from the years 500, 425 and 450 B.C. They carry the names Hercules (Heracles), Concordia and Juno (Hera). -the second one that is the western group can attract the visitor's interest for various reasons, especially for the Temple of Zeus, which is amazing for its huge dimensions. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact.


We have chosen to examine in depth Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples because it is a fascinating and interesting place, where you have to go to do a fantastic experience at least once in your


life. In fact it is rich in culture, history, traditioins and also near one of the greater sea of the Mediterranean zone.
