’m about to get on a plane to India to do a six-week yoga course. By the time you read this, I’ll be in Rishikesh doing sun salutations. I’ve been wanting to do this yoga retreat for about four years but it can be hard to fit a six-week break around life, work, partner, etc. But now the time has come and all I can say is, what on earth was I thinking? What utter madness ever possessed me to think that this was a good idea? Six weeks! It’s a lifetime! It’s going to hurt and they’ll make me get up really early! Don’t for a second think I’m some bendy, pretzel-like little yoga bunny, goodness me no. I’m about as bendy as a fork. People don’t look at me and think, ‘she does yoga’. They look at me and think, ‘she’s no stranger to a quiet night on the sofa with pizza and popcorn’. But there’s no backing out now. I’ve bought the plane ticket and got my visa. This is it. I’m off to the land of downward dogs. Happily, my husband is going to pop over half way through to do a week of yoga for beginners himself, that’s my lifeline. Anyway! Enough about my life story, let’s have a quick word about what you’ll find in this issue... there’s some good stuff. Distance healing (mindblowing), climate crisis (scary), the results of the three month Quit Sugar challenge (illuminating)... yes, it was me and my husband who did the low sugar challenge. I was hoping the kilos would melt from my body like ice-cream on a hot day but it was not to be. My body is seeemingly very attached to my fat stores and is not going to give them up without a fight. The whole anti-sugar bandwagon that’s now rolling is fascinating though suddenly the sugar industry is being compared to the tobacco industry and being blamed for turning the world obese. Read our summary of The Men Who Made Us Fat on page 23. I’ll let you know how the six weeks of yoga goes in the September-November issue of Awakenings.

8 June, World Oceans Day

The global sea level has risen by about 10 to 25 cm (up to about 10 inches) over the last 100 years. Sea level rise is attributable to global warming. Humanity’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are leading to changes in climatic patterns. The most harmful GHG emitted by human activity - carbon dioxide accounts for 85 per cent of the increase in the Earth’s temperature in the past 10 years. When you save energy you reduce the use of fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas - the greatest source of human carbon dioxide output. Simple steps to reduce your carbon footprint—like turning off lights and appliances when not in use, switching to compact fluorescents, carpooling or biking -- can help. Find out more about how to take action at www.unep.org. “If we are to fully benefit from the oceans, we must reverse the degradation of the marine environment due to pollution, overexploitation and acidification.” UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon

wealthmanagement

If you think the world is making headway on climate change, think again. We’re on the fast track to creating a planet that’s uninhabitable and drastic change is needed now. The world needs to go on a low carbon diet.

T

he human race is speeding down the road to an uninhabitable planet, with temperatures too hot to live in; too high to grow food. In 2013, the world reached 400 parts per million of C02 in the atmosphere. This is the highest level in three million years on this planet and flies in the face of the ‘carbon budget’, that is, the amount of C02 the atmosphere can absorb without having devastating effects on the world. Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Sustainable World Global Leaders’ Summit on 20 January 2014, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director Earth Institute, Columbia University, plainly outlined the dire situation the planet faced unless humans got real and serious about reducing fossil fuel usage. Sachs said that the problem is that our fossil fuel-based energy system is leading to global scale change that is unprecedented in the geologic history of the planet. It threatens the fundamental survival of at least hundreds of millions of people this century.

HELL ON EARTH

“We’ve already increased the temperature on the planet by nearly one degree; one more degree and we reach tipping points that are extraordinarily dangerous for our children but we’re not on the path of two degrees, we’re on the path of four degrees right now. “Even the mainstream report of the International Energy Agency, which is the leading organisation for keeping this data, is a four degree centigrade world. You can’t even imagine how dangerous that could be, where’s the food going to come from? What is the quality of life going to be? We’re still playing games. We have nice projects but nice projects do not solve the problem

and we know scientifically what it would take, we’re emitting about 35 billion tonnes of C02 this year. By 2050, in a much larger world economy, we have to be emitting less than 15 billion tonnes,” Sachs said. “If you do the carbon arithmetic, we need to get from 35 billion tonnes per year to about 12 or 13 billion tonnes a year by mid-century. In per person terms, right now there are seven billion people on the planet so we’re about five tonnes per person. There will be nine billion people by mid-century so we need to get to about 1.6 tonnes per person, in a global growing economy. “So the world economy is going to grow by three times but we have to cut back by more than half our carbon emissions, what does that mean? It means we need to keep the coal under the ground; it means changing to electric

9

the oil industry that by 2030 our vehicle fleets must be electric powered, they cannot be internal combustion engine if we’re serious about this problem. So far we’re not serious about the problem, I pity our children and I’m scared for them because we’re not facing the honest carbon budgets of the planet.”

CASH AND COAL

The reality is that, if not one more drop of oil was pulled out of the ground, there is already enough oil and coal in reserve to meet the carbon budget. Use this up over the next 40 years, says Sachs, stop spending billions on exploration to find more and use that money to make the transition to renewable energy – which is critical for the survival of the planet. “Instead of investing tens of billions of dollars in new oil and gas [exploration] when we have enough already, we would be investing that same money in the energy transition worldwide? “Our politicians have a short term time horizon and the short term is continue to produce fossil fuel, that’s how we’ve grown up and that’s what the engineers know by and large and that’s how the world continues

In 2013, the world reached 400 parts per million of C02 in the atmosphere. This is the highest level in three million years on this planet. vehicles, it means radically different building codes, it means facing the fact that when we produce power, our energy has to be emitting about 100 grams of C02 rather than the 700 grams per kilowatt hour [of electricity generated] that is now emitted when we produce electricity. This is straight forward arithmetic but our political systems do not want to face straight forward arithmetic because it means making choices. It means telling the coal industry that unless you have carbon capture and sequestration, the coal must stay under the ground. It means saying to

to grow. You look at how many new coal-fired power plants, more than 1000 are in construction or been approved for development right now. We are increasing the number of internal combustion engines by hundreds of millions in the next 20 years. What are we doing!? It’s not so hard to do a spreadsheet to show how we are moving to a dangerous planet but we don’t hear any of that in these discussions, we only hear the good news, we don’t hear the bad news and that’s the problem. We have to get real about a different direction, which is a different kind of energy system. One that cont. overleaf

is low carbon. The only low carbon sources are nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal or carbon capture and sequestration. There is no low carbon vehicle system except if we move to fuel cells and to battery. This is straight forward, so we have to make those choices and that’s what global agreements should be doing.”

LOW CARBON DIET

Sachs said that one way to make the energy transition is to give the production rights to those who have the reserves right now. “Run down the reserves, let the market price be very high, that would be good for the Middle East and good for the oil companies, I don’t care about that, that’s fine, but don’t produce more reserves. “Let’s understand that we’re on a dropping diet of fossil fuel and we’re on a rising diet of low carbon energy. Current

shareholders would do just fine but companies wouldn’t waste their money with tens of billions of dollars of finding reserves of things that can’t be used safely in the world. This is the big mistake and it comes because our financial markets are even more short-sighted than our politicians. It used to be that great banks financed great industry, they’d invest in a 20 or 30 year forward industry but you look at our great banks right now, they’re all short-term traders, they don’t even know how to finance an industry an

CLIMATE CHANGE FAQS Is there any harmless energy system? “There is no energy system that is completely harmless so we have to make choices. The problem is that our fossil fuel-based energy system is the most dangerous of all because it is leading to global scale change that is unprecedented in the geologic history of the planet. It threatens the fundamental survival of at least hundreds of millions of people this century so I personally support nuclear energy for example, not because it’s perfectly safe but because it’s safer than a fossil fuel energy system. I support wind and solar power, not because it’s perfect, they use land, they threaten the local environment but they don’t threaten the global environment in the same way. So we have to make serious choices but we should understand it. In China, you cannot breathe the air, your eyes water and you can’t even see. The last time I flew into Beijing, I had to circle for an hour because there was no visibility

www.awakeningsme.com

page 8-10 climate change_3pages_Tam.indd 10

more, all they know is quarterly returns so all they want to do is trade existing securities, they don’t know how to finance a new energy sector for the world. So that’s my challenge for Wall Street or the city of London, stop being traders, start being investors again and that means creating a new energy industry not simply trading the shares of the existing energy industry, which is what they do because all of these companies are led by traders right now, not by industry builders. We need new industry.”

Professor JEFFREY D. SACHS is the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is Special Advisor to United Nations SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals. He has authored three New York Times bestsellers: The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011).

to land at the airport. That’s the problem with coal, China has to move beyond coal because it’s damaging, it’s killing people, it’s leading to disease and it’s also the number one cause of greenhouse gas changes now. So there is no perfect system but it’s the relative problem that needs to be fixed.” What do we all need to do? “By mid-century we need to get to about 1.6 tonnes of C02 per person (we’re now at about five tonnes per person), in a global growing economy. In order to do that, you need plans. Governments need plans. You have to do everything; you have to go to electric vehicles, you have to go to clean, low carbon electricity systems, you have to go to very well insulated, air-locked buildings that use about one fifth of the energy, you have to go to smart grids. You have to do everything because it requires very radical transformation that means operating on many different fronts, not one magic bullet. And that will require 30 or 40 years of change with concerted effort globally, global co-operation on all these new technologies. We’re not serious about this yet, we’re just telling ourselves nice stories.”

I

t is common these days to find energy healers advertising distance healing to people that are unable to attend a therapist in person. Skeptics have frequently been dismissed such claims as impossible and hence fraudulent. Even those making them could only ask for clients’ trust, without being able to provide any logical or scientific explanation. In the last few years however, new discoveries from quantum mechanics have validated the existence of ‘non-locality’ as it’s called at the microcosmic level and a plethora of scientific analyses of distance healing have verified its veracity at the macrocosmic level.

QUANTUM MECHANICS AND THE HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE

One of the reasons that these discoveries are not better known is that the maths is hard and the conclusions fly in the face of our everyday experience of ‘reality’. Professor Richard Feynman, a pioneer of quantum mechanics who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965, is quoted as stating, ‘I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.’ Even Albert Einstein, the father of general relativity theory, denounced quantum physics as a flawed theory in 1935, saying it inferred bizarre and nonsensical concepts such as ‘spooky action at a distance’, whereby particles could somehow ‘communicate’ instantaneously with each other over vast distances. This seemed to contradict Einstein’s theory that nothing could travel faster than light; hence he concluded that quantum physics had to be wrong. In the last few decades however, some of the most modern and technologically advanced experiments conducted in linear accelerators have proved Einstein wrong and quantum physics correct. Simplistically, if you split a particle and put one part say in the Stanford

In Healing Beyond the Body, he reports the results of many meta analyses of Era III medicines Linear Accelerator and the other part in the CERN facility, then when you change the direction of spin on one part of the particle, the other part also, simultaneously, changes direction. That is the demonstrated fact of non-locality. But how does the one half know what its other half is doing? The answer seems to be some sort of energetic entanglement at the quantum level with an omniscient and omnipresent field of information which is ‘just there’. A metaphor that was coined by Professor David Bohm is that of the ‘holographic universe’. If a hologram is smashed into millions of pieces, each piece contains the whole picture but from a different perspective. This holographic universe or entangled field of information is now being given many names by different branches of science

and medicine, such as the knowing field, the info-realm, the collective consciousness, the Akashic field. Metaphysically it has traditionally been called God or Brahman or Allah. Non-locality finally starts to explain how each one of us as a piece of the holographic universe is capable of accessing all the information that exists ‘out there’ so long as our brains can ‘tune in’ at the right frequency, just as you need a light source vibrating at the right frequency to read a hologram.

DR. LARRY DOSSEY’S THREE ERAS OF HEALING

Dr. Larry Dossey in the USA describes three eras of healing. Era I is the now old-fashioned Western model which believes the body is simply a mechanism and the only solutions are physical or pharmacological. Era II, which is gradually becoming the accepted norm, derives from the work of psycho-neuroimmunologists and neuroscientists and admits there is memory in cells throughout the body, not just in the brain. It accepts the psychosomatic effects of one’s own consciousness on one’s own cont. overleaf

14

awakenedminds cont. from pg13

body. This allows us to have a highly significant influence over our physical and emotional health through our thoughts and beliefs. Era III is where the mind is described as ‘non-local’ and unconfined by either space or time. It recognises that our non-local mind may affect healing both within and between people. Non-contact and distance healing become possible with non-local mind, as do healings backwards and forwards in time (for instance working with past lives or the ancestors).

EVIDENCE

Just as linear accelerators have proven the existence of non-locality at the quantum level, Dossey and others have been working to collect the evidence that proves the existence of nonlocality at the mind level. In Healing Beyond the Body, he reports the results of many meta analyses of Era III medicines. For instance, studies conducted over two decades at the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Laboratory show that non-local awareness operates through time as well as through space, showing odds against chance of one hundred billion to one that mentally sent images chosen at random from a computer data bank, are actually perceived by the ‘receiver’ precognitively up to several days before being sent and before being selected by the computer. The Soul Medicine Institute has set up the first international database of energy psychology case histories. It is peer reviewed and conforms to the Consort Standards and the Standards of the National Institutes of Health. In a book based on the results reported to the Institute, Dawson Church and Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. document over one hundred scientific studies, and dozens of medically verified ‘miraculous’ cures, that demonstrate the power of thought, prayer and belief.

Era II, which is gradually becoming the accepted norm, derives from the work of psychoneuroimmunologists and neuroscientists and admits there is memory in cells throughout the body, not just in the brain Hundreds more similar reports are now available and the bibliography to my book [see author box out] lists a number of useful sources of this research.

IMPLICATIONS

For most people, accessing the inforealm is most easily achieved through experiences such as meditation or plant medicines. And access brings us new ways of healing ourselves, physically and emotionally, giving us much greater control over our own health and destinies than many of us have been conditioned to believe. Many healers are also able to access the info-realm and this work outside conventional space and time is what the traditional shamans have been doing for centuries. One interesting observation that emerged from the work of Robert Beck as far back as the 1960s, is that healers’ brains appear to operate in a particular electromagnetic frequency range which is in alignment with the frequency of the Earth’s magnetic field. Church reports Beck’s work as follows. ‘The Earth resonates

www.awakeningsme.com

page 12-14 distance healing explained_Tam.indd 14

at an average frequency of 7.8Hz, while the dominant brainwave frequency of sensitives, such as shamans and healers, comes close to 7.83Hz, and may, at times, beat in phase with the Earth’s signal, thereby causing harmonic resonance... They appear to be tapping into a universal frequency that is implicated in healing, and is effective regardless of the belief structure of the healer.’ So distance healing seems to involve the healer entering into an altered state of consciousness that allows access to the info-realm and connection or entanglement with the client through that universal energy field. Just because distance healing can work of course doesn’t imply it always will work. As with attending a healer in person it is essential to pick someone that you resonate with. Neuroscience tells us that mirroring the neuronal pathways of a grounded and empathic therapist is one of the keys to helping traumatised clients, so the clienttherapist relationship is crucial whether in person or at a distance – but that is a topic for another time!

EVELYN BRODIE works in London, UK, as a shaman, a Reiki Master and a craniosacral therapist, helping clients to release trauma, stress, depression, physical illness and limiting beliefs. Previously she was an economist, financial broadcast journalist working for the BBC, Sky News, CNBC and Bloomberg, and executive communications consultant. She tells the full story of this u-turn in her beliefs and way of living in her book, ‘Corporate Bitch to Shaman - A journey uncovering the links between 21st century science, consciousness and the ancient healing practices’.

Paint away your problems: The power of art as therapy Creative expression has the power to change your life, writes Jan D’Sa, a molecular biologist-turnedartist who discovered this for herself after picking up her paintbrush saved her life and sanity.

C

reative expression is a powerful tool for healing, meditation and de-stressing. With more people opting for alternative paths to health, wellness and happiness, expressing yourself creatively – be this anything from art, to woodwork, dance, cooking or making model aeroplanes – is an effective tool for rebalancing and releasing stress or pent-up emotion. Yet, increasingly creative expression is taking a back seat to social media. The technology available at our fingertips makes it difficult to tune out the

Facebook feeds, Twitter alerts or photo galleries on Pinterest. As creative beings, we need outlets to express ourselves and nurture our inner selves. It does us no good to choke the pipelines of our creative souls by letting distractions of the outer world take over our lives. Living life without creative expression leaves us feeling repressed and robotic. From here, the inner darkness can manifest as illness and the depression that destroys relationships with ourselves and with others. I know this from personal experience.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 16-19 art therapy_Tam.indd 16

For years, I repressed my creativity to the point of disowning it completely. As an adult third culture kid, I was faced with the perennial ‘I don’t fit in because I do not belong anywhere’ imbroglio. Added to that was the criticism from business peers who couldn’t understand how a molecular biologist like me could also be artistic. So I shut down my creative side to survive in the corporate world of engineering and medicine. My shackled creative being, relegated to the dark corners of the universe, kept calling for attention

and expression but I refused to listen. For 10 years, I blocked my creativity and denied my emotions. As a result I hit rock bottom and this was the impetus I needed to resurrect the imprisoned creative self. That’s when I bought some art paper and pastels, sat on the floor, and started to paint. This was three years ago and I’ve never looked back.

ART AS A HEALING TOOL IN CLINICAL SETTINGS

Since the beginning of time, mankind has used the arts in a cultural setting for building strong community bonds. This has included painting, sculpting, drama, dance, music, poetry and singing. It was only in the 20th Century that the arts was used formally as a field called ‘art therapy’ when doctors observed mental health patients expressing their feelings through painting. Since then, hospitals and health institutions around the world use art in conjunction with traditional medications to help improve the patient’s state of mind. When art is used alongside psychotherapy and psychiatry, the patient is helped by both the doctors and the art therapists to deal with emotions and fears that are bottled up. According to a research paper by Stuckey and Nobel1, patients prefer art therapy to verbal communication because the art modalities help them express how they feel where words cannot. Visual art therapy has many facets to it: painting in various media, sketching, doodling, clay work, sculptures, art journaling, and all forms of handcrafting (such as crochet, knitting, embroidery, textiles making or jewelry making). Art therapy has been used with prisoners, with sexually abused children, with terminally ill cancer patients, with those who suffer from chronic depression, and with those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. With cardiovascular diseases and diabetes being the number one killer diseases in the UAE, it is possible to use creative activities to help decrease stress that can be the underlying causes of such chronic diseases. cont. overleaf

BENEFITS OF USING ART IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Not only is painting used in therapy, it can be used in daily life. You do not have to be an artist to be able to creatively express yourself. It’s not about learning a particular painting technique or taking a formal art study program. That means that excuses such as, ‘I am not a writer, I am not a musician, I am not a dancer, I am not an artist,’ etc don’t hold true. Art offers a safe place for us to be just as we are without any judgement. It is a sanctuary in the midst of our chaotic life. It’s about allowing us to awaken the deep desires we once had. Art opens endless possibilities in our imagination to find creative methods of expressing anything we want to. For many, it has a calming effect, which then decreases stress. For those of us who reach out for food or other unhealthy substances when we want to stuff down emotions, art gives us a chance to find better and healthier coping strategies.

YOUR ‘GET ARTY’ KICK START To get your creative juices flowing, buy a set of coloured crayons, pastels or acrylic paints and a paper pad then take 20 minutes to draw, paint, doodle… whatever comes up when you ask yourself the question, ‘Who am I?’ Find 20 minutes of alone time. Turn off all mobile phones, TV and other distractions. Close your eyes, take three long breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Breathe from your stomach. Meditate for a minimum of one minute up to five minutes (optional) Ignore the chattering mind and thoughts that may attack in droves. When you find that this is happening, simply draw your attention back to breathing from the depths of your stomach. Now, gently bring to mind the topic of ‘Who am I?’ into your awareness. Go deep in your body and feel this question in your body. What is it saying to you? When you feel that question, what colour, smells or fragrances come to mind? Pick the colour crayons of choice and start to draw whatever you feel like. Do not draw from your mind, but engage from your being. Your deeper self knows it all. Use music if that helps. Refrain from any sort of judgement or critical voices that may come up. Take 15 minutes to paint away and find a way to close this exercise, perhaps with three deep breaths. Enjoy your piece of art!

If you already practice prayer and meditation, great. In my case, I found that creative expression paved the way to daily prayer and meditation, as well as mindful eating, exercising and clearing the clutter. Of course, life didn’t change the minute I applied acrylics to canvas. Being creatively blocked for a very long time meant that I had to take baby steps. In time, painting helped defrost major writing blocks. More recently, painting has become my way of delving deeper into my third culture and cross-cultural identity. Art has truly become the perfect point of alchemy, where life becomes whole. 1Stuckey, HL and Nobel, J. The Connection between

The three month

‘Quit Sugar’ challenge

Is sugar the sweet poison that some claim? A married couple go low-sugar for three months to see what happens to their bodies and moods... words by Tamara Pitelen.

I

s the amount of processed sugar in the modern diet responsible for everything from diabetes and obesity to cancer? How difficult is it to cut refined sugar out of your life and what happens if you do? That’s what my husband Adrian and I are aiming to find out with a three-month low sugar diet. You may have read part one in the previous issue of Awakenings where we wrote about doing a two-month challenge… we decided to add a month. This story takes up where we left off at the end of the last story. To recap, we’ve adjusted our normal eating to avoid any food with more than five grams of sugar per 100 gms and any beverage with more than zero grams of sugar per 100 gms (except milk – Adrian is still drinking milk and I’m drinking unsweetened almond milk). To give an example of how this has changed things, Adrian now eats a whole new breakfast – no more branflakes (20gms of sugar per

100gms), low-fat yogurt (10gms of sugar per 100gms) and orange juice (basically all sugar); instead our usual breakfast is now two free range eggs and smoked salmon – the sugar went down but the price went way up. Along the way, we’ve discovered that there are a number of approaches to the low-sugar lifestyle. Some people simply cut out refined, added sugars like sugar in tea, cake, biscuits, fizzy drinks, etc. Other people go even further and avoid all foods that the body processes as sugar – this is everything from honey and agave syrup to bread, pasta, potato, fruit, rice, and so on. The approach we were initially following is recommended by anti-sugar author David Gillespie, an Australian man who lost 40kgs apparently effortlessly by going low sugar and then wrote a best-selling book about it called Sweet Poison: How sugar makes you fat.

page 20-23 Low sugar challenge_Tam.indd 20

WEEK NINE: GLUTEN AND DAIRY FREE

It’s been exactly two months since we went low-sugar. For the last 10 days, we’ve upped the ante and also gone gluten-free, caffeine-free and dairy-free as well because we bought a book by Dr Mark Hyman called The Blood Solution 10 Day Detox Diet. Hyman says we’re all sugar addicts and the $1 trillion industrial food system is the biggest drug dealer around, contributing to tens of millions of deaths every year. He writes: “You are hooked - a junkie mainlining some of the worst, deadliest drugs on the planet: sugar and anything that turns to sugar in your body.” So we’ve been following Hyman’s suggestions and both Adrian and I are starting to notice some changes. My cholesterol has gone from a “worryingly high” 206 mg/dl [the medical assistant at LifeLine Medical Centre who tested

me a while back] to a safe-zone 120 mg/dl. Measuring cholesterol is a bit confusing though. We bought one of those home test kits so we could test ourselves once a week. For no reason we can figure out yet, the results can swing wildly from week to week.

WEEK 11: DETOX REACTION

I’ve just come out of a five-day cellular detox crisis that felt like something between having the flu and falling off a wall. I felt battered. At first, I didn’t realise it could be a detox reaction. I woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a bus so I called in sick at work and dragged myself off to the doctors. It felt like a bad cold or flu was kicking in, you know, when you’re aching all over and a bit emotional. I felt exhausted and just craved being allowed to sleep for about two days. I’m embarrassed to say I even cried in the doctor’s office out of selfpity, it’s a surprise she didn’t prescribe me anti-depressants. Much to my consternation though, the doctors and nurses couldn’t find anything wrong with me. They took my temperature, did blood and urine tests as well as

whatever else they test with their stethoscopes and thermometers but I was absolutely fine as far as they were concerned. So why on earth did I feel so utterly, indescribably awful? I asked the doctor, getting all teary again. She didn’t know and told me to come back in a few days if I hadn’t improved. For the next two days, I didn’t leave the house, the aches and pains in my hips and lower back were so bad I took painkillers at night and slept in our spare bedroom so my thrashing about and moaning didn’t wake up Adrian. Looking for answers, I re-read a book called The Body Talks: Heal Your Weight by Judy Cole. She describes the difference between a regular digestive detox, which lasts a few days or a week or two, and a deeper, cellular detox. Here’s what she says about a cellular detox: “We are detoxing the residues of foods our bodies have not properly eliminated from the blood and then have stored in the cells over many years. It takes the body at least two months to flush the accumulated food intolerance residue out of the cells, during which time you will have ups and downs of feeling great and terrible! A

21

commitment to an initial strict avoidance of your foods for two months is a must on the long road to completely healing your weight… try and avoid them for four months in order to allow a deeper healing to take place in your cells. If for example food has been the cause of irritable bowel symptoms such as bloating, pain and gas, these foods will have left your gut inflamed. This damage can take as long as five months to repair…” According to Coles, symptoms of a cellular detox include: r %FFQ GBUJHVF BOE TMFFQJOFTT r Emotional outburst r Worsening of some disorders r Cravings r Nausea r Headaches above the eyes r Cold or flu-like symptoms r Strange aches and pains in the body r Skin reactions such as acne, rashes, cracked lips r Changes in the menstrual cycle, which will rebalance in three to four months So, did I experience a cellular detox? Maybe. After five days, all the symptoms had vanished. According to Cole, a really deep detox can take six months to a year. As the body feels safe to release some of the gunk stored in your cells into your blood stream for removal from the body, you’re going to feel terrible. It will pass, you’ll feel ok again and then if the body still feels safe (ie, you haven’t consumed anything that causes intolerant reactions), it will dump another load of gunk from the cells to the blood stream, and so on.

THREE MONTHS

A couple of unexpected changes have been to my fingernails, tongue and menstrual cycle – apologies if some of the details to come are a little ‘too much information’ for the more squeamish reader but I’m going to be reasonably forthright in case my experience helps someone reading this – maybe you. cont. overleaf

For the last few years, I’d been unable to grow my nails longer than the fingertips. My nails would crack, break, or split and cuticles were dried out and ragged. They’re still hardly ready for any hand modeling jobs but for the first time in many years, my nails are now getting some length. Another thing is that, in the past for as long as I can remember, I always had a vaguely unpleasant thick white coating on the back of my tongue. It’s now noticeably decreased, almost gone at times. As for my menstrual cycle, that has significantly changed. For many years, I’ve had an unusually short cycle; it would come round every 21 to 24 days. But for the last two months the cycle has been 30 and 35 days. Is it connected? It’ll be interesting to see how if that balances out in the next few months.

THE SUMMARY

It’s been a really interesting experiment. Three months ago, Adrian ate branflakes every morning along with a freshly squeezed orange juice. Today, he wouldn’t touch those foods with a barge pole. We’ve had slips and slides along the way of course, it wouldn’t be realistic to think we wouldn’t but we’re convinced that avoiding sugar, gluten and dairy the majority of the time has made a positive difference to our health.

LOW SUGAR CHALLENGE RESULTS Ok, it’s the moment of truth... how did the bodies of our two guinea pigs change after three months of low sugar? That is, eating no food with more than five per cent sugars per 100gms? (Well, most of the time, the guinea pigs did slip up a couple of times...) TAM SAYS: “Feeling a bit trimmer is nice but I won’t lie, after three months of big dietary changes, I was hoping for a few more kilos to drop off. That didn’t happen and for me one of the realisations has been that there isn’t going to be a quick fix ‘lose 10kg in 10 weeks!’ miracle. For me and my body, things take time. Achieving optimal health is a long-term process requiring consistency. Yes, my nails and skin are better but they’re not flawless and I still have digestive issues. Still, I’m convinced that eliminating processed sugars reaps health rewards so we are going to continue our low sugar lifestyle… most of the time. And when we do eat sugars they will be natural sources like dates - we will be absolutely avoiding anything with high fructose corn syrup read the next page for the reasons why.” ADRIAN’S RESULTS

ADRIAN SAYS: “I also have much better skin. I suffer from eczema that I associated with tiredness and stress, but that is now all but cleared up. I am also prone to spots, which have reduced significantly. On the feeling healthy front, I have significantly less indigestion and as a result I sleep much better. I also feel much better within myself, put can’t really put a finger on that other than I feel healthier. My figures show that I am lighter, leaner and better hydrated than at the start, but some of this I have to put down to additional exercise in the final few weeks. I will continue to stay low sugar as I see and feel the benefits, but the occasional slip is bound to happen. As they say “a little of what you like does you the world of good”, which is the philosophy I intend to follow. As for the rise in cholesterol, the week before the final weigh and measure, that figure was considerably lower - we haven’t figured out yet why cholesterol can swing hugely from week to week. I’ll keep an eye on it though.”

THE MEN WHO MADE US FAT The alarming rise in levels of obesity around the world motivated reporter Jacques Peretti to go in search of the people responsible for revolutionising our eating habits. He produced a documentary for the BBC about it called The Men Who Made Us Fat. We’ve summarised the main points here but it is well worth a watch, go to www.bbc.co.uk Today, there are 1.4 billion overweight adults in the world and 500 million obese ones. British people are on average three stone (19 kg) heavier than they were in the 1960s. In the BBC documentary, The Men Who Made Us Fat, Jacques Peretti investigates the men responsible for the transformation in our eating habits; how business changed the shape of a nation, as well as how the food industry choreographs temptation. Obesity rates have doubled since the 1980s and according to Peretti, we’re in a war between our bodies and modern accessibility to fast and processed food. In 1971, US President Richard Nixon appointed Earl Butz as Secretary of Agriculture. Butz had a vision to merge the country’s army of small farmlets into enormous, industrial farms of unprecedented output. “Get big or get out” was Butz’s motto and his plan was to grow more corn than ever before, in order to keep food prices cheap and housewives happy who would then vote his party back into government. Soon, these new, larger harvests of corn became feed for the cheaper beef flooding the supermarkets and huge surpluses of corn were being created – this was soon turned into a brand new food thanks to some Japanese scientists, it was a cheap industrial sweetener called High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). This cheap corn sweetener has ended up in just about every processed food imaginable – take for example the typical American fast food meal of a burger, fries with tomato sauce and a Coke; the beef is from cows fed on corn; the Coke and tomato sauce are sweetened with corn syrup; the bread for the bun is made with corn syrup, and the fries are cooked in corn oil.

SUCROSE VS FRUCTOSE

The biggest health impact though was when HFCS replaced sugar in fizzy drinks like Coke and Pepsi in 1984. The reason was a no brainer – HFCS was a third cheaper than sugar. In two decades, fizzy drink consumption in the US has gone from 350 cans per person per year to 600 cans per year. The damaging difference between regular processed sugar and HFCS is how it affects the body. There’s something very specific about fructose that accelerates obesity, namely, the effect of fructose on the liver. According to endocrinologist, Dr Robert Lustig, fructose is easily converted to fat in the body, and scientists have found that it also suppresses the action of a vital hormone called leptin. “Leptin goes from your fat cells to your brain and tells your brain you’ve had enough, you don’t need to eat that second piece of cheesecake,” said Lustig in an interview with Peretti. When the liver is overloaded with sugars, leptin simply stops working, and as a result the body doesn’t know when it’s full.

Bitter sweet: Was the start of mass production of high fructose corn syrup in the 1970s the trigger for the global obesity epidemic? “It makes your brain think you’re starving and now what you have is a vicious cycle of consumption, disease and addiction. Which explains what has happened the world over,” Lustig said. Americans eat about 90lbs of added sugar per year. This is like a tsunami of sugar hitting the liver, which impacts fat in the blood leading to heart disease as well as fat in the liver, leading to diabetes and chronic diseases.

SUGAR JUNKIES

Why is it that we just can’t seem to get enough sugar? Because it is literally addictive. Sugar takes the brain prisoner by activating the same circuitry that is activated in addictions. The havoc that processed sugars have wreaked on global health and obesity is now being more widely studied and accepted but this is a recent change. For the last 40 years, accepted wisdom was that we were all getting fatter, quicker because of fat. It was American scientist Ancel Keys who convinced the developed world that dietary fat, particularly animal fat, was the cause of heart disease (interestingly, the more subtle finding in his work that did not get so widely promoted was that animal protein and fat increased heart disease while plant fat decreased it). One scientist who disagreed with Keys’ anti-fat stance was UK Professor John Yudkin. In 1972, Yudkin wrote a book called Pure, White and Deadly , which outlined how the rise in heart disease correlated to the rise in the consumption of sugar. This was not a popular argument with the influential sugar lobby however and Yudkin was basically black-listed and discredited by powerful sugar-funded opponents. As a result, the case against sugar was forgotten and the low-fat obsession took hold. The result? Obesity rates in the UK are now 10 times what they were in the 1970s and the amount of sugar eaten has increased by 31 per cent since 1990 because of the ‘invisible’ sugar added to products like tomato sauce, soft- drinks, yogurt, baked beans, etc. When dietary fat became public health enemy number one, the food industry spied an opportunity and before long our supermarket shelves were swamped with low fat products everything from yogurts to mayonnaise, biscuits and desserts. The low-fat industry boomed. Fat was taken out and sugar was put in. As a result, profits for the food industry have soared and so have obesity rates.

Going gluten free A beginner’s guide to the why and how of removing gluten from your diet.

W

hat is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in all forms of wheat, rye and barley. It is most commonly found in food but also hides in medicine, vitamins and make-up. The first thing you should do when starting a gluten-free diet is schedule a meeting with a skilled dietitian or nutritionist. A dietitian or nutritionist can help you learn the basics of a gluten-free diet and help you find ways to adapt your lifestyle. What happens if you eat gluten? Gluten is essentially toxic to people with Celiac Disease. Unlike an allergic reaction, someone with Celiac will not go into anaphylactic shock if they eat gluten, instead experiencing physical symptoms such as: diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, skin rashes or headaches. Continuing to consume gluten puts you at risk for long-term damage to the small intestines. There is no medical treatment to prevent the body from attacking the gut once gluten has been ingested. The gluten-free diet Gluten is a protein found in all forms of wheat, rye and barley. It’s most commonly found in food, but also can hide in medicine, vitamins and makeup. After being diagnosed, you should schedule a meeting with a skilled dietitian or nutritionist as soon as possible to help you learn the basics of a gluten-free diet and find ways to adapt it your lifestyle. How quickly does the glutenfree diet work? Patients who strictly follow the glutenfree diet can begin to experience relief of symptoms within a few days, although it can take up to six months for the small intestine to heal in children and potentially two years to repair fully in adults. Don’t expect immediate results, just keep following the gluten-free diet and you’ll feel better soon enough!

What are some unsafe ingredients to avoid especially when ordering/eating out? Barley, Bran, Croutons, Dextrin, Rye, Macha, Malt, Oats, Rice Syrup, Tabbouleh, Udon, Wheat.

tree nuts (such as almonds), quinoa, fresh fish (cod, salmon, etc), fresh shellfish (clams, oysters), fresh meats/ poultry (unbreaded), honey and water (including bottled, distilled, spring).

What are some safe ingredients? Milk (not flavoured with ingredients that contain gluten, such as malt), 100 per cent fruit or vegetable juices, fresh fruit and vegetables, butter, eggs, lentils, beans (in their natural, unprocessed form), peanuts, seeds (such as flax),

How do you maintain a balanced diet while gluten-free? Adjusting to a gluten-free diet can be tricky, so it’s important to ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Fortunately, many of the healthiest foods, such as vegetables, fruits, beans/lentils, nuts

25

and seeds, low-fat unflavoured dairy products, lean meats, fish, and chicken are naturally gluten-free. On the other hand, some glutenfree products increase the sugar or fat content to compensate for texture and flavour changes that can result from the removal of gluten. Look for products that do not have sugar, syrups, or fat listed high on the ingredient list. When first starting a gluten-free diet, it also can be beneficial to meet with a dietitian or nutrition specialist who will help you get started and stay healthy.

A raw deal: Why eating only raw food isn’t always right First up, this story is not an attack on our dear raw vegan friends, we commend their aim to tread more lightly on the planet and being raw vegan is always preferable to a burger and fries lifestyle. Yet, while raw food should be part of everyone’s diet, aiming to be 100 per cent raw vegan isn’t the best diet for everyone and can even be detrimental to health. Words by Alison McLaughlin.

O

ne of the latest food trends is consuming a diet that is purely made up of raw foods. The thinking behind the raw food movement is based upon the idea that when foods are cooked they lose many of their nutrients. Thus, if foods are uncooked and unprocessed they are automatically better for us. Consuming

raw foods on a regular basis is an important part of healthy lifestyle. In fact, I encourage my clients to eat raw foods every single day because they support a healthy digestion system. But, eating only raw foods should not be defined as being the healthiest way to eat. In fact, some foods are not always better for you when they are eaten raw.

Research has shown that cooked vegetables make nutrients more bioavailable for our bodies to absorb. Specifically, when some vegetables are cooked, they end up having higher amounts of antioxidants (carotenoids and phytochemicals) when compared to their raw form. This increase in antioxidants is from the breaking down

of cell matrix (where nutrients are bound) in vegetables. For example, the lycopene in tomatoes is more accessible to our bodies when tomatoes are cooked and cooking carrots makes the beta-carotene more available for the body to absorb. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach are also high in nutrients such as calcium and magnesium, which is more available for our bodies to absorb when these vegetables are cooked. Just one cup of raw spinach contains approximately 100 mg calcium, whereas one cup of cooked spinach contains approximately 260 mg of calcium. Some raw foods can decrease thyroid function. Cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussels sprouts), although highly nutritious, release a compound called goitrin during digestion. Goitrin can interfere with thyroid function and the synthesis of thyroid hormones. When you consume goitrogens, they may inhibit your body’s ability to absorb iodine - an essential mineral required for thyroid function - and reduce your body’s ability to produce thyroid hormones that regulate energy use. Low levels of thyroid hormones - a condition called hypothyroidism - are associated with unexplained weight gain and poor health. Individuals with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and iodine deficiency may benefit from cooking these vegetables, which takes away most or all of their goitrogenic properties. Sure, if we cook foods until they are burnt or turn black, they will lose the majority of their nutrients. But some raw food proponents make it seem that cooking healthy foods such as vegetables means they become ‘processed’ foods. This is simply not the case. Processed foods come in packages. There is nothing processed about having a side of steamed vegetables for dinner.

JUNE - AUGUST 2014

page 26-29 Raw not always right_Tam.indd 27

One of the most preferred cooking methods to maintain/enhance nutrients in vegetables is steaming. Research shows steaming can increase antioxidant capacity, while boiling may lead to a loss of nutrients, especially water soluble nutrients such as vitamin C, folate and thiamin. Other methods of cooking such as baking, stewing, grilling, and microwaving have been shown as beneficial for breaking down the cell walls in vegetables (making more nutrients available). Cooking breaks apart fibres and cellular walls to release nutrients that otherwise we wouldn’t be able to absorb from the same raw food. Lastly, it’s important to realise what foods you will be missing out on if you eat solely raw foods. For example, someone who only eats raw foods will usually not be able to consume any kind of legumes such as beans and lentils – unless they have the time, patience and skill of a raw food chef. Legumes offer a wide variety of nutrients, and are a good source of protein and fibre. Eggs are another food that should not be eaten raw (but can be), because of the possibility of being contaminated cont. overleaf

BEGiNNEr’S GUidE To rAW vEGANiSm Raw veganism is a plant-based diet that involves no cooking. No food is heated above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). Raw vegans believe that foods cooked above this temperature have lost much of their nutritional value and are less healthful or even harmful to the body. In raw vegan speak, cooking is killing. Foods are eaten fresh, dehydrated with low heat, or fermented. Many raw vegans refer to ‘live’ foods versus ‘dead’ foods. Live or uncooked foods are said to be filled with vital life energy so juicing and blending green smoothies are usually key elements of this diet. Raw veganism is an extension of the vegan appreciation for animal welfare, with the added spirituality of a life force, called chi or prana. Dead or cooked foods are said to be depleted of their life energy, as well as most of their nutrients. Among raw vegans there are subgroups such as fruitarians, juicearians, or sproutarians. Fruitarians eat primarily or exclusively fruits, berries, seeds, and nuts. Juicearians process their raw plant foods into juice. Sproutarians adhere to a diet consisting mainly of sprouted seeds.

with salmonella. Eggs are one food that should not be intentionally cut out of a diet, as they are full of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, high quality proteins, and antioxidants that support eye health (lutein and zeaxanthine).

THE BOTTOM LINE

Eating raw foods is just one part of a healthy diet. I recommend eating a variety of raw and cooked foods to reap the health benefits that both have to offer.

rAW vEGAN riSKS Tooth decay: Some people on a raw food diet rely so much on fruit that their teeth begin to erode: from acids in the fruits that wear down the tooth enamel, from sugar promoting decay, from dried fruit sticking to the teeth and further promoting decay, and from a general mineral deficiency. Nutritional deficiencies: On a raw vegan diet it’s difficult or impossible to get vitamins B12 and D, selenium, zinc, iron and two omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, without taking supplements. Vitamins D and B12, and Omega 3 fatty acids are nutrients that women particularly need as they age. Child development: A child raised on a raw, vegan diet without proper supplementation would likely develop severe neurological and growth problems due to a lack of vitamin B12 and other nutrients. rAW Food QUEEN’S U-TUrN Victoria Boutenko is one of the world’s most well-known and influential raw foodists. She has been integral in bringing raw veganism into the mainstream with several books including 12 Steps to Raw Food, published in 2000. However, more recently, even Boutenko has backed away from a regimented attitude on the raw food diet, here’s part of what she wrote in her blog on 9 January 2010…

did YoU KNoW? Most scientists agree that eating meat and then cooking food enabled the development of the human brain. Cooking in particular opened up a new world of calories and nutrients. Our raw vegan cousin, the gorilla, has three times the body size of humans, but one-third the brain cells; it grew muscular on plants, but not smarter because the diet did provide consume enough calories to evolve the brain. “I noticed feeling progressively more sensitive when talking to people who were struggling to stick to a 60%, 70%, 80%, or whatever % raw diet. All of a sudden, I realized that my book 12 Steps to Raw Foods (first edition) contained fanaticism about 100% raw foodism. Soon I completely revised this book and published the second edition, which I find to be a much kinder book, and perhaps more useful because of that. I shredded and recycled the left over copies of the old edition. “I have noticed that when I was telling other people about myself being a 100% raw foodist, it came across as if I was claiming to be a better, higher, more spiritual person. I felt so uncomfortable that I repeated in every lecture, “I am just a woman in a green dress. Please don’t put me on a pedestal.” “We are all pioneers, still in the beginning of our research of the human diet. Nothing is set in stone and our bodies continually change. For example, while I enjoyed gourmet raw food in the beginning of my raw journey, for several years now, I have completely eliminated food prepared with nuts. In recent years I have decided that it can be healthier, to eat a bowl of cooked green vegetables than a whole jar of raw nut butter.”

Beauty products in your kitchen T

oxic products exist almost everywhere – from supermarkets to department stores – and in bright, shiny packaging, looks can be deceiving. Despite seductive advertising, some of these well-known brands contain harmful chemicals (like parabens and petrochemicals) proven to be carcinogenic. But as consumers we have a choice as to what we put on our skin (so by default into our bloodstream and through our organs) and many safer alternatives without the hefty price tag, are overlooked. Often you don’t need to look further than your pantry to find an effective tried and tested remedy that has worked well for centuries. Not only do you save money with these eco-friendly options, they are also good for you. After all, they are edible. As well as doubling up as skincare, the natural wonders below can also be used for medicinal purposes. I’m a big fan of the following:

Toxin-free, natural homemade skincare is often overlooked yet produces fantastic results. By Sarah Bladen.

WHAT: LEMON JUICE

Truly a beauty wonder, lemon juice can fade age spots, freckles, and combat acne. It’s also a natural facial ‘peel’ and a super cheap way to get hair highlights. Skincare: Using lemon juice on your face helps to tighten and shrink pores, fight acne and fade freckles and pigmentation. Got a pimple? Dab a drop of lemon juice on it when you go

awakenedbeauty to bed at night - the L-ascorbic acid in lemons is the active ingredient in many commercial acne products. If you’re after a lighter complexion or want to fade pigmentation, the citric acid in lemons can whiten, brighten and lighten your skin. Squeeze the juice of a lemon or two into a little bowl then, with a cotton ball, apply to your pigmented areas and leave it on for up to 10 minutes before thoroughly rinsing with cool water. For best results, exfoliate first. Mix a pinch of sugar or sea salt with the lemon juice. Some people do this daily; for other people that’s too often. Initially, try every second day to gauge how your skin reacts. Like any bleaching or fading cream, lemon juice only works with regular use and results are gradual. If you’re after some subtle highlights in your hair, lemon juice is also the

way to go. One method is to combine lemon juice and hair conditioner, comb through your hair and sit in the sun before washing out. Repeat at least once a week for significantly lighter hair. Warnings: Like any depigmentation treatment, lemon juice will make your skin more sensitive to ultraviolet rays so be extra vigilant with sunscreen. If you’ve got dry skin, undiluted

31

lemon juice can exacerbate the condition so mix equal quantities of water and lemon juice in a little spray bottle. Just watch out for cuts, lemon juice can sting. Be careful if you’re already using other topical medical treatments, the lemon juice may not be a good combination. Medicinal Benefits: First thing in the morning, one of the best ways to detox your body is by drinking a tall glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon. Once in the body, lemon juice acts as an alkaliser, restoring your PH levels and boosting your immune system. WHAT: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

This has been used as folk medicine for eons and with good reason. This magical liquid has fabulous healing properties and helps ease problematic skin – from blemishes to sunburn and eczema – it greatly reduces inflammation. It also acts as a toner and skin brightener. Skincare: To make your apple cider vinegar (ACV) face wash, pour a tablespoon of ACV into a small bowl with three tablespoons of warm water and apply to your face with a cotton ball. If you have sensitive skin, use five tablespoons of water to a tablespoon of ACV. As your skin gets comfortable with it, you can go down to two or even one tablespoon of water. Either leave on for 10 minutes and rinse or apply face oil over the top. If you’re concerned about how your skin will react, first apply the diluted ACV to your wrist and leave it an hour to check for any redness or irritation. For an all over body treatment, add a cup of apple cider vinegar and a cup of Epsom salts to a hot bath to draw toxins out through the skin and help

jumpstart the cleansing process. This can also help relieve joint pain as well as skin conditions like eczema and acne. Medicinal Benefits: It is a brilliant natural remedy for sore throats and it can also double up as a natural mouth

freshener. Many have raved about Apple Cider Vinegar for its detoxifying effects since it decreases glucose levels and fights a myriad of infections. For more tips and ACV beauty recipes, check out www.organicauthority.com. cont. overleaf

WHAT: COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil has been shown to protect you from viruses, bacteria, infection, cancer, brain and heart problems... plus it beautifies your skin, burns fat and boosts your thyroid. For thousands of years coconut oil has been one of the most loved hair conditioners and for good reason. It has an amazingly repairing effect on your hair cuticle and is good for scalp health since it contains antibacterial properties and nutrients. Besides being a fabulous hair serum, it’s the perfect skin enhancer – a thin layer is highly moisturising for your complexion. You can make various recipes using coconut oil or just use it by itself. To make your own moisturiser, scoop about two cups of coconut oil into a mixing bowl – break up into chunks if necessary and whiz it on high to whip the oil until it’s soft and fluffy. If you like, add a few drops of essential oil for the scent. Then transfer into a storage container and use in place of lotion and body butter. Great for an overnight super hydration treatment.

Medicinal Benefits: Many rave about the nutritional value of drinking coconut oil. You can either add it to protein shakes or as an extra topping on a salad; otherwise you can drink it on an empty stomach. Classed as a super food, coconut oil is a low carb drink and is

said to fight viruses, improve your brain function as well as burn fat. For more tips and coconut beauty recipes, check out www.wellnessmama.com, www.goodgirlgonegreen.com and www.thecoconutmama.com.

ou might assume that having an acupuncture facial would involve quite a few little needles in your face. And you’d be right (15 of them, in my case) but what you may not assume is that you also end up with needles in other parts of your body, like your legs, stomach, hands, etc. This is because what goes on in the rest of your body shows on your face. So if you have a sluggish digestive system, you could end up with acne. If you have puffy eyes that are creating eye bags, it could be the result of inflammation in one of your organs. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s believed all the main meridians start or end in the face. Whatever is ailing the body shows up in the face. On a basic level, this can be understood when you think about what happens when you get angry; your face gets red and your facial muscles constrict. So whether it’s fine lines, sagging skin, little red veins, acne or puffy eyes, the cause probably lies somewhere else in your body, so says Acupuncture Therapist Dr. Alireza Najafi Germi, which is why you need to get to the root cause if you want to look younger or just slow down aging. “Yes, needles in the face will help production of collagen and elastin to boost elasticity but needles will also be needed in the area of the root cause, which could be the legs or stomach or elsewhere,” Dr Germi says. “Causes of aging in the face can be symptoms of underlying problems such as stress, hormone imbalances, digestive issues… etc. The causes can be emotional as well. I had a client who suddenly suffered acne after her father passed away. Grief affects the lungs which in turn can have a big impact on the face and skin. This is why each person needs different treatment.” So far so good but can acupuncture facials really help with ageing or problem skin? Only one way to find out so, in the name of research, I underwent the process of having a course of 10 acupuncture facials, which means getting needled twice a week for five weeks.

SESSION ONE

The initial session takes the longest (about an hour and a half) because you must first discuss your health and medical history with Dr Germi. This looks at diet, past and current health issues, lifestyle, and so on. After that, it’s time to get on the table. First, Dr Germi placed six or seven needles in my lower legs; one in my hand and a couple in my stomach, to help with digestive issues. Apparently, one of the acupuncture points in the lower leg was to stimulate collagen production, which helps with giving skin more of that youthful elasticity. He also put a needle in my foot, which helps with anxiety. Most of the time it’s relatively painless having all these needles stuck in your skin but there is the occasional sensitive point – which means it’s an area that needs work, said Dr Germi because there’s only pain if there’s a blockage.

35

While he leaves the needles in the lower half of the body to do their work and before he places the needles in the face, Dr Germi gives you a full facial using Jasmin products – a top quality, certified organic Australian brand. The facial includes cleansing and toning, a scrub, mask and moisturising. This is all extremely pleasant. I emphasise the ‘extremely’. For fifteen to 20 minutes, you’re left to relax with the needles in your lower body while the Jasmin face masque dries – this is usually when I fall to sleep. Then Dr Germi washes off the mask, takes out the first lot of needles and commences placing the second batch, which are the ones that the go in your face. Happily, they’re much thinner than the needles used in other parts of the body. They go in the standard areas that show aging like the crow’s feet by the eyes; the frown line in the middle of the forehead, and the lines at the corners of the mouth.

I went back to the office after that first session and was told by the first two people I met that I looked ‘glowing’ and ‘great’.

Session 4

Any nerves I had in the first session about being stuck full of needles are gone. There’s the odd needle that pricks a bit when it first goes in but it’s nothing of any significance – getting my eyebrows threaded hurts more than this does.

Session 5

I’m going back on that statement about it not hurting more than threading. Dr Germi found a very sensitive point on my foot today – I almost kicked him.

Session 10

I’ve really enjoyed by twice weekly acupuncture and facial sessions with Dr Germi. I think I can see a difference but this is a subtle effect and not the same kind of transformation that you get with a surgical facelift. One benefit I didn’t consider when I started this was the boost your whole body gets from just having all this acupuncture. It’s also a kind of forced time-out twice a week. You can’t do much when you’re covered in needles so you end up meditating, relaxing, unwinding… that’s an unexpected benefit as well. The big question though, is do I look better? Yes, I think so but it’s not the kind of dramatic difference that other people would notice. Although, lots of people don’t even notice when you get surgical work done on your face and eyes, often people just think you’re looking fresher for some reason they can’t put their finger on. That’s what you get with an acupuncture facelift – fine lines decrease, your skin is smoother and some of the issues that may be causing you to age faster are reduced. This is no one-fix-wonder like surgery though; acupuncture facials offer the best results as an ongoing and regular part of your anti-aging routine.

AcUpUNcTUrE FAcEliFT FAQS How does it work? Acupuncture, a form of traditional Chinese medicine, is designed to free up chi, or energy. When the needles are applied to the body and face, production of collagen and elastin is stimulated, which ‘plumps up’ the skin. In addition, any problems in the body causing premature aging or skin issues are addressed. What does it do? Skin becomes smoother and firmer and there are fewer wrinkles. Fine lines are erased and deeper lines reduced. There is less sagginess, a lifting of droopy eyelids, and a clearing or reduction of age spots. As an added bonus you also get an overall overhaul and rejuvenation that is not confined to your face. Who should get it? Anyone wanting a ‘lift’ without opting for surgery. For best results, start the treatments in your 30s or 40s to maintain a more youthful appearance as you move into your 50s and 60s. Is it really the same as a surgical facelift? No. The Acupuncture Facelift gives you about 30 to 50 per cent of the results of surgery but it gives a whole lot more than surgery does with regard to all over body and organ rejuvenation because this is a whole-body treatment. Plus, if you start having the acupunctures sessions earlier in life while keeping unhealthy lifestyle habits in check, you may never need to resort to surgery. What does it cost? For a 10 session course of five Acupuncture Facial sessions twice a week with Dr. Germi at Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, the price is AED 5,000 with the Jasmin organic facial included. But if you tell them you want the Awakenings magazine discount, the price is AED 3,500 with the Jasmin organic facial. Alternatively, pay in advance for 10 sessions of Acupuncture Facelift without the Jasmin facial and the regular price is AED 3,150. The Awakenings discount price is AED 2,500. See page 50 for vouchers.

Eco Formula What have fast cars and motor racing ever done for the environment? You may well ask… Adrian Maul reports on green engineering in Formula 1 cars and Formula E, the electric car racing series.

P

robably the most exciting news to hit my desk regarding motor racing recently is the news that the FIA Formula E Championship series is due to start its first races in September this year. This series will use completely electric cars and the first season will have 10 races around the world ending in June 2015. Ten teams with two drivers each have signed up for the first season, which is great news, as is the fact that the series is operating as an ‘open championship’ format, which means that this will enable

manufacturers and constructors to showcase their technology. The cars are anticipated to have performance figures of 0 to 100 kmh acceleration in around three seconds and a top speed of 225 kmh. for those of you in the UK during July and August there are a number of free pre-season test sessions at Donington Park Racing Circuit, details can be found at their website www.fiaformulae.com/testing. I for one cannot wait for this series to start and wouldn’t if be great if a race could be held in the UAE for the second season?

FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX

Yes, I know that a petrol-head event like the Formula 1 Grand Prix is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when one considers eco motoring but believe it or not, there is a green agenda even here. It comes down to fuel-efficiency; using fewer fossil fuels is everyone’s goal. The engineers behind the production of performance and racing cars are striving to get the most performance out of every drop of fuel that their car carries. This is where it gets interesting since there is a direct relation to getting the most power from a drop of fuel and the efficiency of the engine. Therefore the ultimate race performance engine should by definition be fuel-efficient. Remember, no race team wants to carry excessive heavy fuel in their car as all excess weight is a burden that slows them down. Crucially, the technology

JUNE - AUGUST 2014

awakenedmotoring

developed to improve the performance of these fast cars often makes it into the production cars that you and I are able to buy. Ironically, it is the vast amount of money that pays for this motor racing technology that ultimately makes your and my car more efficient.

NEW F1 RULES

This year, Formula 1 (F1) motor racing has introduced a number of new rules to challenge the manufacturers. In particular, the changes relate to engine size, fuel consumption and hybrid technology: 1. Engine size The previous series of F1 cars had 2.4 litre V8 engines, which has changed for this season to 1.6 litre V6 engines with turbo chargers. This means that F1 cars now have smaller engines than the average for cars in many countries around the world including the UK, USA and UAE. Smaller engines supported by turbochargers to improve power and efficiency is no new thing though and many manufacturers such as VW and Ford have been using this technology for years, though with mixed results and some controversy as to how efficient these engines really are when compared to their larger predecessors. F1 coming to the stage in this area though is bound to see improvements to this technology in the future. 2. Fuel Consumption Perhaps a much more interesting area is the new fuel limits. In the previous season, there were no limits to the amount of fuel a car was able to use per race and on average they used about 225 litres. The new rule limits them to 100kg of fuel, which is about 140 litres - a reduction of around a third. This is significant as the F1 engine manufacturers will have to focus on the fuel efficiency of their engines or the cars will not make the 305km distance that F1 races are run over. This still gives a pretty poor average fuel consumption figure for

JUNE - AUGUST 2014

page 38-39 Motoring_Tam.indd 39

The vast amount of money that pays for this motor racing technology ultimately makes your and my car more efficient. the F1 cars of about 45 l/100km, but they are moving in the right direction as last season this was 75 l/100km. 3. Hybrid Technology For a number of seasons, F1 has used a form of hybrid technology to boost power and preserve energy otherwise lost through braking. The Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) converted braking energy into electrical energy that can then be used to provide additional power on demand. This year however this technology has been advanced with two systems employed to recover energy, the Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic (MGU-K) and Motor Generator Unit – Heat (MGU-H) along with an Energy Store (ES). The MGU-K works similar to the older KERS recovering energy from braking, it can also act as a motor under acceleration posting power to the drive train. The MGU-H connects to the

turbocharger and converts heat energy from exhaust gases into electricity. This can then be used to either provide power to the drive train, or drive the turbocharger to overcome the low revs turbo lag associated with turbochargers. 4. Turbochargers Turbochargers were originally designed to make cars go faster, a side effect of this however is that by their very design they enable fuel to be burnt more efficiently. So car manufacturers can use smaller, more efficient engines in their cars. Conventional turbochargers have two connected turbines, one that is spun by exhaust gasses which in turn spins the other turbine to compress the air prior to feeding it into the combustion chamber to concentrate oxygen and produce a bigger explosion. In essence, it’s accepted by all but the most obtuse climate-denier that the invention of the motorcar has had a devastating impact on the environment. We can’t however uninvent them. We need to evolve them into something that significantly reduces environmental harm and it is the engineers working feverishly on the engines in supercars and racing cars that are bringing new technologies to the table that will eventually be used in everyday production cars.

Children and

depression Yes, even a child can suffer from depression and one in five children have a mental health issue. Child therapist Tim Hydari answers some of the most common questions about mental health disorders faced by children.

perceived stressor. They might have difficulty concentrating, show irritability, struggle to sleep at night, become socially withdrawn and/or have low self-worth.

Are there different types of anxiety?

I

t’s not just adults who can suffer from depression and other mental health issues. Sadly, even children can find themselves overcome by the ‘black dog’ – so called by depression sufferer Winston Churchill. Depression is a negative state of mind and mood that adversely impacts a person’s (including children’s) thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of wellbeing. Of course this state is different to the regular sadness that a child will feel in their day-to-day life along with other natural feeling states. However when the sadness becomes persistent or debilitating or if disruptive behaviour develops and affects a child’s attention and thought patterns, interests, conduct, peer relations, schoolwork or family life, then it might be that a child is struggling with depression.

What are the symptoms of depression? For a child, some symptoms of depression might be feelings of irritability, anger, hopelessness, worthlessness, as well as social withdrawal, fatigue, physical complaints (stomach aches, headaches) that don’t respond to treatment, changes in appetite and sleep and thoughts of suicide.

How do you tell if a child has anxiety? How do parents know if their child is struggling with anxiety? Whilst anxiety can be termed as a worry, nervousness or unease about something with an uncertain outcome, it can become a state of concern when it stops a child from functioning normally. Children with anxiety disorders tend to overreact to a

Anxiety disorders can take different shapes. For example, phobias are a type of anxiety. When a child develops a phobia, it means they have an intense and irrational fear of a specific object such as animals, the dark, medical procedures etc.). Then there is social phobia/anxiety, which is an intense fear of social and performance situations. Sometimes children exhibit selective mutism, which is a refusal to speak in situations where talking is expected or necessary and instead turn their heads, chew or twirl their hair, avoid eye contact or withdraw into a corner. Children might also worry excessively about school grades, family issues, relationships with peers, or performance in sports. This would be considered generalised anxiety and is sometimes diagnosed as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). Other types include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) when a child has unwanted and intrusive thoughts (obsessions) whilst feeling compelled to perform rituals and routines (compulsions) to try and ease anxiety. Also post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is when children have intense fear or anxiety, sometimes completely avoiding people, places or activities, after they have witnessed a traumatic or life threatening event.

Why do children feel anxious? One reason children feel anxious is when they are separated from their primary caregiver. It’s natural for children to experience separation anxiety between 18 months and three years old when a parent leaves the room or goes out of sight. Usually children can be distracted from these feelings. I’m sure many mothers reading this have found that their child cries when first being left at daycare or pre-school, with the crying usually subsiding after the child becomes engaged in the new environment. However if your cont. overleaf

child is slightly older and unable to leave you or another family member, or takes longer to calm down after you leave than other children, then the problem could be separation anxiety disorder, which is believed to affect four per cent of children (most common in kids ages seven to nine). Many children with separation anxiety commonly worry about bad things happening to their parents or caregivers. Therefore extreme homesickness or feelings of misery when not being with loved ones can often occur. Other symptoms include refusing to go to school, camp, or a sleepover, and demanding that someone stay with them at bedtime.

What does a parent help? Parents need to try and monitor these behaviours and communicate with their child without them feeling insecure or judged. It is thought that at least one in five children suffer from some sort of mental health concern. If that is indeed the case then it is certainly important for parents to get their children help if any symptoms appear to be chronic and debilitating to the child. It’s important to communicate with the child’s teacher so as to track any changes when in school. It’s crucial to note that development (language, motor, social etc.) in children varies from child to child however if a perceived problem persists, seek advice from a professional. Special attention should be given to problems that persist across a range of settings (at home, at school, with peers etc.), changes in appetite or sleep, social withdrawal, regression (return to younger behaviours such as bed-wetting), constant tearfulness, signs of self-destructive behaviour (nail biting, self mutilation or head-banging) or persistent thoughts of death. When a parent is to communicate with a child it should be done in a straightforward manner and at a level that is appropriate for the child’s age. Whilst pre-school children need less information, school age children often want more specifics. Some parents have found it useful to compare a mental health concern with a physical illness. So explain to them

that just like they go to the doctor to seek help for their flu that isn’t allowing them to do the things they usually do, they will go to a therapist to help them deal with feelings that are interfering with their school work or their home life.

How can a parent use play to bond with their child? Play is a great method for parents to bond better with their child. Before engaging in particular activities, parents need to understand that play is where children show us their inner feelings and experiences that they usually can’t or won’t talk about. So it’s of paramount importance that parents join their children where they

www.awakeningsme.com

page 40-42 mental health.indd 42

live in order to receive what they have to share and engage in activities with their children that their children show interest in. This will immediately bring about better communication. I would suggest parents suspend reality whilst they are playing with their children to allow for a multitude of interesting possibilities in communication to arise. For example parents should try and reverse roles with their children in a playful way. This will provide great insight into the dynamics of their relationship. Of course the disclaimer here would be not to take what comes out of it personally. That’s just counter productive. Play between parent and child is supposed to be supportive and fun. Parents should also refrain from judgment in play and instead let the child lead whilst following with good humor, patience and guidance. However the latter should be used only when necessary so as to avoid controlling an activity too much. Parents should also try to be in the moment. It surprises me the amount of times parents complain about their children’s attention deficit yet they themselves cannot engage their child in an activity that he or she has chosen without their mind wandering off somewhere else. In regards to particular activities, any game that a child and parent enjoy playing together can bring them closer. However some games are actually about connection including games like peekaboo, hide-andseek, tag and playful roughhousing. These games play with the idea of closeness and distance. However the easiest way to improve the parent-child bond would be to share a giggle. Ask your child to get you to laugh and you’ll immediately know what they find funny. Then do it.

Detox holiday in

Turkish paradise Sianji Wellbeing Resort is Turkey’s prime wellness destination. People from all over the world come to lose weight, rejuvenate and regain their spark. Kaya Peters spends eight days on their Raw Food Detox Program and here she reveals the benefits of this unique holiday with Awakenings magazine.

S

ianji Wellbeing Resort is one of world’s top hotels dedicated to cleansing body, mind and spirit, while educating guests on the basics of healthy living. Based on the alkaline and raw food diet, guests choose from different programs tailored to individual needs. In addition, the resort provides education on health and food preparation, high quality spa treatments and therapies, as well as healing activities to support the detox process. The main programs offered are the ‘Master Detox’, ‘Raw Food Detox’ and ‘Alkaline Diet’. The master detox is a full juice cleanse; the raw food detox allows for several daily meals made of the finest raw ingredients. The Alkaline Diet also incorporates cooked foods and focuses on the right balance between acid and alkaline food intake. All programs are supported by a variety of healing therapies, treatments and activities: Daily yoga and Pilates classes are offered, as well as fitness based exercise in the fully equipped gym or Thalasso pool. Guests have unlimited access to the amazing spa; are taken on walks in the surrounding nature or can relax in the living room while enjoying the breathtaking ocean view.

GRAPEFRUIT AND CINNAMON

Upon arriving at Bodrum airport, I am taken to the resort by airport transfer, where General Manager Muhammet Gurkan is waiting to give me a warm

welcome. I am taken to my private sea-view suite and served a green salad for my evening meal. The staff of the hotel is friendly and helpful. The room is spacious, light, and a perfect environment to withdraw and immerse myself in the Detox Experience to come. I take a bath in my private Jacuzzi while overlooking the ocean and prepare myself for a good night’s rest in my comfortable king size bed. The next morning starts with fresh apple ginger juice and a small portion of grapefruit sprinkled with cinnamon and sesame seeds. After breakfast I am booked in with the resort’s detox specialist to discuss my program and tailor it to my individual requirements. Çisem Cakir (www.inrawwetrust.com) is a beautiful young woman with a passion for her work. Trained as a raw food chef she consults the guests and monitors their progress on the programs. She also provides educational sessions and gives classes on raw food preparation and making the shift to a healthier lifestyle.

BODY ANALYSIS

I am taken through an extensive intake and body-analysis, which shows I have a couple of kilos to lose and mostly too much water retention. The results come as no surprise as the challenge of running a business in Dubai for the past 18 months has taken its toll on my body. Çisem suggests I start with the raw food detox but also try the master detox (only juices) for a day or two. The raw food detox consists of a combination of juices, salads and gourmet raw food meals, served about every three hours. The meals are delicious, mostly prepared with vegetables, seeds, nuts and some soaked grains. There is plenty of green juice and wheatgrass served as well, and in the evening I enjoy a huge, colourful salad. In addition I take probiotics every night, as well as spirulina in the mornings (a green algae with amazing healing benefits). cont. overleaf

The first three days of the program are tough. I feel nauseous, tired and heavy. I sleep about fourteen hours a day and limit my exercise program to outdoor walking and a bit of stretching. After day three, the worst of the detox crisis passes. I start feeling very clear minded and full of energy. I decide to switch to the Master Detox and fast for a day and half on juices. Then I do another two days of raw food and the last day I have vegetable soup and white fish for my dinner, as my body clearly has enough of the cold foods. My detox program is supported by daily presso therapy, which drains the lymphatic system, as well as outdoor walks, steam bath and sauna and amazing massages from a Balinese therapist named Ria. I am consulted by the on-site doctor to see whether there is anything in particular in my medical condition which asks for attention.

climate, we automatically pick foods, which are lighter and have a cleansing nature. Fresh fruit, vegetables, salads and grilled white fish are best eaten when living in tropical and subtropical temperatures. Cold weather asks for more building foods, like longer boiled stews, meats and starchy vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes.

PROS AND CONS

MUST DOS

In Chinese Medicine, raw foods are classified as cold and cleansing so a raw food detox is a highly effective way of detoxifying the body. However, it can also cause some difficulty for people with weak digestive systems. Personally I am not able to digest such an abundance of raw food, and therefore could not be on a diet like this for extensive periods of time. There are different opinions about the raw food diet. My personal opinion as a whole food nutritionist with a background in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine); is that a program like this is great once a year, but in general we should not be eating 100 per cent raw. Salads, sprouts, soaked nuts and other raw foods should definitely be a part of our diet. Overcooking food does kills a lot of their nutritional value and therefore it is best to lightly steam or broil vegetables, while retaining their vibrant colours. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the climate we live in affects the way we eat. When living in a hotter

THE RESULTS

At the end of my program, I am again submitted to an analysis. I have lost two kilos of water weight and 1.5 kg of fat. My face looks younger and slimmer and my body feels great and much lighter. The cleanse has been beneficial and effective. In the days after the cleanse, I stick to eating white fish, salads and vegetablebased dishes. I return to Dubai ready for a new year with a lot of motivation to incorporate some of what I’ve learned into my daily life.

Detox and fasting rituals have been part of the human diet for centuries and practiced by ancient cultures, tribes, religious groups and people living in close contact with nature. In earlier times, where the pace of life was slower and man lived in a much more natural way, there was less exposure to toxic influences. In today’s society we face high stress levels, breathe in artificial air, eat contaminated and toxicated foods and drink bottled water. No wonder the body starts showing signs of imbalance. Investing in your health on a detox holiday is a great way to come back to yourself and embark on your journey towards living a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Prepare yourself! Upon booking you will receive an extensive explanation on how to prep yourself in the days before your detox holiday. This means cutting out certain foods and drinks in order to minimise the detox crisis; Take your swimsuit! Using the healing Thalasso Pool, Turkish steam bath and sauna will accelerate your detox process; Break your detox correctly: After cleansing, your body will be in a purified state. Therefore it is of the utmost importance you break your cleanse in the best way possible, with natural foods that do not put any strain on the delicate digestive system. The staff will provide you with a full list of info upon arrival.

Spa Review: The Aloe Vera & Cucumber wrap in floatation bed at De La Mer Fitness and Day Spa

H

ow do you get the sensation of floating without getting wet? In a flotation bath at De La Mer Fitness and Day Spa. It’s a brilliant concept. You’re lying on a kind of massage table which is positioned over a bath but with the flick of a switch the table slowly transforms and gently lowers you into the warm bath… but there’s a thin water-proof material between you and the water so there you are, floating, but not actually getting wet. It is unbelievably relaxing, you will fall asleep in the warm embrace of the water. In fact, there’s a ‘back in the womb’ feel to the experience. I should mention though that the floating is the second part, the first part involves being scrubbed all over and then slathered in aloe vera and cucumber, which is left on to do its work on your skin while you’re in the floatation bath.

JUNE - AUGUST 2014

page 47 Spa review_de la mer.indd 47

Both aloe vera and cucumber are known for their hydrating and soothing effect. This wrap is perfect for overexposed, sun-burnt or sensitive skin. It reduces body temperature while moisturising and creating new cell growth. Afterwards, you take a shower and you’re given an all over body massage. It’s a wonderful way to relax and unwind or just treat yourself. Don’t be in a hurry to leave though. De La Mer Day Spa is a hidden gem. Located on Jumeirah Road, it has a 14,000 square foot garden and swimming pool as well as an array of facilities and treatments for women, which makes it a great place to spend the day (they’ll order meals in if you do). Using organic brands Voya, Elemis and Nimue, De La Mer Day Spa offers a range of massages, scrubs, face and body treatments. On the ground floor, there’s a full hair as well as a well-equipped gym complete with the option of a personal trainer.

A hammam and a VIP room on the second floor is all about relaxation. Hire the VIP room for a group of friends and enjoy treatments, the Jacuzzi and relaxation with total privacy. Similarly, the walled garden offers privacy with more space. A pool, Jacuzzi and seating areas encourage members to enjoy the outdoors. Weekly yoga classes also take place in the garden.

Price: AED 80 for a day pass to use the spa’s facilities (excluding treatments) or AED 300 for a monthly pass. Women only. neanderthal man goes new age

Detox drama Neanderthal Man is a 40-something, ex-British soldier who collects exotic knives and can strip down a semi-automatic rifle blind-folded. Until recently, he thought ‘chakras’ was a Latina pop star whose hips don’t lie. But things changed for the cardcarrying caveman when he met the Tree Hugger… this issue, he survives detoxing…

D

etoxing. Whose bright idea was that then? The health evangelists would have me believe I’m loaded with toxins. Not sure I believe them. I’ve never seen any and don’t know how they’d have gotten inside me. Do they hitchhike in on cheese toasties? Tree Hugger though, has it in her lovely little head that we’re full of these toxin things, whatever they are. She says this is very bad and that we need to get them out! How do you get them out? No surprises for guessing; it involves raw vegetables. Why can’t toxins be flushed out with beer? Why can’t they be chased away with ice-cream? It’s just so typical. Raw flipping vegetables. Yes, even I accept that we’ve been over

indulging recently. The problem is, there’s always a reason. Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter, the sun’s shining, the neighbour’s cat had babies… and yes, perhaps blaming Tree Hugger for boil-washing my clothes till they shrunk was not an entirely accurate explanation for why I’m not fitting into my trousers so well anymore. To do this detox, Tree Hugger booked us into a wellness resort for seven days. Apparently, we can’t just eat vegetables at home. We need to pay an eye-watering fortune to have chefs highly trained in not doing very much with vegetables and seeds prepare our food. I can grate a carrot but you don’t find me calling myself a gourmet wellness vegan chef.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 58 Neanderthal man.indd 58

Anyway, so we get to this resort and we’re told that because we’re on the detox diet, we can only have food from the buffet that has a yellow label. Any purple-labelled food is strictly off limits and all the staff had been briefed so don’t try sneaking any, it would be confiscated. Naturally, there was to be no carbohydrates, caffeine or alcohol but we could have all the wheatgrass and spirulina juice we desired. No limits, knock ourselves out. After the first day, I woke up with this strangely familiar gnawing feeling in my stomach. Then I remembered; it was hunger. Hadn’t felt that in a while. We went up for breakfast. Not a sausage or piece of bacon in sight. Breakfast options were several vegetable dishes, vegetable soup, grapefruit, pumpkin seeds, salad (salad!) and all the herbal tea or caffeine-free coffee alternative sweetened with dried stevia leaves we could drink. Anything worth eating had a purple label and the breakfast buffet was guarded by a swarm of SS Waffen storm troopers dressed as waiters. After breakfast, what were we going to do? No TV! Entertainment options were: read a book; listen to a talk on nutrition; have some kind of therapy, and lay by the beach or pool. I read a lot of books that week. Cookbooks mostly, the pages are a bit sticky now from where my tears fell onto the recipes for mouth-watering delights like Beef Wellington (‘… sit the beef fillet on a roasting tray, brush with olive oil… sob…’) and Chocolate Marquise (‘… pour the melted chocolate into the butter mixture, and carefully stir… boo hoo’). It was the longest week of my life. If this is detoxing, I’d rather keep my toxins thanks very much. I’ve told Tree Hugger that I’m choosing the next holiday. There will be enough food and drink to sink a ship and an IMAXsized, flat-screen TV in our room. But she really is going to have to stop boil washing my clothes.
