editor’s letter

Welcome!

Your guide to wellness and healthy living in the UAE Published by

here are some great quotes in this issue of Awakenings. Let me throw a couple of them by you now: ‘You are what you eat so don’t be cheap, fake and fast.’ You can find that in the Crohn’s Disease story - an enlightening insight into how food can be so much more powerful than medication for healing (pg 28). I’m also loving the ‘your genes hold the gun but your lifestyle and environment pull the trigger’ quote. This is from the Epigenetics story (pg 14). Basically, you might have a gene that predisposes you to cancer, obesity, dementia or whatever but it’s your lifestyle choices and the environment you live in that determine whether this gene will switch ‘on’ or not. Even more empowering, a gene that has been switched on can be switched off again with lifestyle changes. According to the doctor quoted in the story, it’s the massive amounts of sugar and gluten we’re consuming that play a huge part in switching on so many disease genes - from diabetes to cancer, Alzheimer’s, auto-immune conditions, thyroid disorders and so much more. Some believe the modern diet and lifestyle is also responsible for conditions like autism and ADD. One thing that’s undeniable is that we have a global pandemic of diseases that not so long ago were very rare. Something’s going on. The question is whether we, as a species, will figure it all out in time and change our ways. On a lighter note, you’ve got to have a go at baking the vegan blackbean brownies (pg 37), I can vouch for their utter deliciousness. In our story ‘Sinful to Saintly’ we took four much-loved wicked desserts and tweaked the recipes to transform them into nutrition-packed treats. Still on the food theme, right now, as I type this, there’s a pot of chicken bone broth simmering on the stove. I am a convert to broth - it’s said to be a magical liquid that heals just about anything you can think of so I am anticipating miracles. There will be bitter tears if I don’t get at least one miracle. After all, you have to simmer this stuff for about 12 hours. Some people simmer it for up to two days! The DEWA bill! Before this, the longest I spent cooking something was three minutes for boiled eggs. So anyway, yes, I should getting my first miracle any day now. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Epigenetics:

The future of healing is here Could a genetic test help you dodge a disease like cancer or Alzheimer’s? By finding out early that you have a gene predisposing you to diseases like obesity, cancer, heart disease, or dementia, you can take steps to reduce the chances of getting the disease. This is the basis of epigenetics, a new frontier in medical science. www.awakeningsme.com

page 14-17 Epigenetics3.indd 14

A

few years ago, the general belief was that if something was ‘in your genes’ you were stuck with it. We thought our genetic profile was chiseled in stone and you just had to make the best of what you got. The new science of epigenetics is turning all of that on its head. Yes, you might have a gene that predisposes you to cancer or dementia, fibromyalgia, migraines, thyroid deficiency, obesity, arthritis, or some other condition but you have huge control over whether the gene is activated or not. And if you do activate it, there’s also a chance it can be turned off – or at least cooled down. It turns out that our genes are not so much chiselled in stone but written in pencil and they can be erased and rewritten.

LIGHT SWITCH

Dr Nashim Ashraf of the DNA Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness in Abu Dhabi says, “Genes are like a light switch, that’s how people should think.” “Epigenetics is the new science of medicine that modifies the expression of the gene.” This work is the specialty of the DNA Health Center’s team of US-trained and US-certified professional medical and naturopathic specialists. “So you have the genes you were born with, I can’t change those but what I can do with diet, supplements, hormone replacements, and other treatments, is either turn off the gene or turn on the gene, like a light switch. “Basically, people think genes are your destiny but that’s not quite true,” Dr Ashraf says. “Your genes hold the gun but your lifestyle and environment pull the trigger. Meaning you can modify your genetic makeup to prevent diseases from developing that you thought you were destined to have - that is epigenetics.” Scientists now know that our genes are in constant dialogue with our environment. Our genes respond to stress, diet, activity levels, and other environmental changes.

15

So you have the genes you were born with, I can’t change those but what I can do with diet, supplements, hormone replacements, and other treatments, is either turn off the gene or turn on the gene, like a light switch. So what does this all mean? Especially in a world now groaning under the weight of a pandemic of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, auto-immune diseases, digestive issues, and more. What it means is how you feed and move your body; how you deal with stress and negative emotions, and what toxins such as radiation, BPAs and pollution you are exposed to, have much more impact on the diseases you will or won’t get than your genetic profile. Biology is not destiny; you create your own future with every bite, breath, thought, step, puff, reaction, etc.

It’s never too soon to get yourself tested through a healthy wellness check, says Dr Ashraf. “The first thing we try to impress is do not wait till your 60 years old for that. It’s too late! You should have a healthy wellness check from the age of 30. The human body starts deteriorating from the age of 25; your hormones start decreasing… that’s when you should be tested. For people with a high incidence of disease in the family, they should come earlier.”

JOLIE MASTECTOMY

One of the most famous cases of using Predictive Genetic Testing (PGT) to make decisions about future disease

In May 2013 Angelina Jolie revealed that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy after tests showed that she carries the BRCA-1 cancer gene, which doctors said gave her an 87 per cent chance of contracting breast cancer. cont. overleaf

risk has been Angelina Jolie. The Hollywood movie star got herself tested for the genes that predispose someone to breast cancer. Jolie got tested because breast cancer is prevalent in her family. Unfortunately, she did have the breast cancer genes and the wisdom of traditional medicine was that she was a ticking time bomb. “The genetic test is for BRCA-1 and BRCA-2,” Dr Ashraf says. “If you have these two genes you have a 90 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. “For 80 per cent of people, the most common time in which cancer comes is the fourth and fifth decade of life. “Due to Jolie’s age at the time, it was almost certain she would develop the disease in five to seven years so she decided, rightfully so I believe, that she would have a bilateral mastectomy. That’s epigenetics. So yes in this case surgery had to be done, which is extreme but in future that will change because we are working out how to silence these genes.” While medical science has figured out how to turn some genes off, it has not so far figured out the BRCA genes. But hopefully, says Dr Ashraf, Jolie’s daughter or granddaughter will not have to resort to surgery as in time we will discover the keys to turning off these genes as well.

SIMPLE CURES

So how do you turn off genes related to disease? Through herbs, exercise, antiinflammatory foods, anti-oxidants, stress management, detoxing, etc. Incredibly, one of the most effective ways to turn off genes that predispose us to disease is the humble spice turmeric. One of the most potent antiinflammatory effects known to man, the yellow spice turmeric is extremely effective in ‘cooling down’ these inflamed or triggered genes. According to Dr Ashraf, the challenge though lies in getting enough turmeric to be effective.

CASE STUDY Full Name: Haitham Rashid Alnaqbi Age: 35 Nationality: Emirati Condition: Overweight Result: Lost 16kg in four months with DNA Center of Integrative Medicine and Wellness in Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi In the last six years, Abu Dhabi resident Haitham Alnaqbi had gained 20 kilograms. Wanting to address this, he went to the DNA Center in September 2014 and signed up for the weight-loss programme. Haitham admits that his weight gain was largely due to lifestyle, for example eating sweets or soft drinks, while watching TV or driving long distances. Dr. Nasim and his team did extensive tests including taking samples of Haitham’s blood and saliva. The tests determine if someone has a genetic predisposition to being overweight, whether any food intolerances are contributing, and more. The samples were sent for analysis to the US, UK and Germany. “Based on the test results, Dr. Nasim explained to me that my weight gain has led to an increase in cholesterol (the bad triglycerides), an acute shortage of vitamin D, a vitamin C deficiency as well as a lack of essential minerals. After reviewing the results, Dr. Nasim tailored a diet programme, gave me supplements to increase the essential vitamins and minerals needed by my body to release fat, as well as giving yoga lessons and comfort.” “After four months, the results have been amazing. My weight came down almost 16kg and there was a significant decline in cholesterol while the vitamins and minerals reached required levels. “I have benefited from learning about the health risks around me and how to avoid them, and from which foods to eat and which to avoid based on my blood type (DNA map). With the help of the centre, I hope to achieve my goal.”

“Increase it in your diet, yes, but if I have a patient in whom I want to use turmeric as a medicine, then I give them a turmeric capsule, which is available in any good organic health food store. I take it myself every morning, 1 gram. A friend of mine in Seattle drinks it in a smoothie every morning. This is the science under epigenetics, it is nutrigenomics – nutrition and genetics.”

TOXIC TRIGGERS

The research into what turns the genes off is ongoing but alongside that and possibly more important is figuring out what turns the dormant gene ‘on’. With the global epidemics of cancer, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and so on, there’s something we’re doing as a human race that is turning on these genes, what is it? No surprises for guessing that according to experts like

www.awakeningsme.com

page 14-17 Epigenetics2.indd 16

Dr Ashraf, it’s sugar, processed foods, pesticides, cigarettes, etc. The diet and lifestyle of the developed world is triggering these dormant mutated genes. “We’re eating genetically modified foods - tomatoes are being crossed with fish – can you imagine a fish gene going into a tomato!? We’re bombarded with environmental toxins like pesticides and radiation from computers, cellphones, microwaves… these are all examples of the increased and changing landscape of toxins and environmental hazards that we are being exposed to that, even just 50 years ago, people were not. “The biggest killer today is metabolic syndrome, which means obesity, high fat, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. I believe this is triggered by the sugar in our diet, by our sedentary lifestyles, fast foods and too many carbs,” Dr Ashraf says.

Your genes hold the gun but your lifestyle and environment pull the trigger. Meaning you can modify your genetic makeup to prevent diseases - that is epigenetics.

UAE GENE TESTING

For those concerned about future illnesses or conditions that might be written in their DNA, the DNA Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness offers evaluation and treatment by a US-trained multi-disciplinary medical team that covers all corners of health and wellbeing. Services include, a personalised blueprint for health assessment; a Full Body Imaging CT Scan/early detection screening for cancer and cardiovascular risk; comprehensive functional genetic and metabolic testing; bio-impedance analysis; heart, lung and tissue analysis; testing for food sensitivities, as well as a holistic treatment plan that offers everything from traditional and alternative medicine, to aesthetic procedures, and yoga and spiritual therapies. “If someone comes to us and says, “I just can’t lose weight…” we approach them here at DNA not by saying ‘ok, how many calories will you burn, what is the latest fad diet…’ no, you have to start with genetic profiling of that individual. There is a gene called FTO, Fat Associated Obesity gene, if you have this, you have a 50 per cent

MAY - JUNE 2015

page 14-17 Epigenetics2.indd 17

chance of being obese. Or you may have increased appetite because of a problem with your hormone leptin; you may have an issue with insulin resistance; you may have an issue with breaking down fat or enhanced absorption of fat, and so on. So the first thing we do at DNA is look at the individual and their complete basic genetic makeup specific to their condition. Someone comes in for migraines, 80 per cent of that can be prevented or improved by removing food allergies. We are seeing children here with autism and hyperactivity disorders, women with severe hormonal issues and none of them realise it’s all triggered by food. “Once we have the results, the patient meets with our multidisciplinary team, we have a UStrained doctors, integrative medicine specialists, a naturopath, homeopath, Ayurvedic specialists, Yoga teacher, exercise specialists, and more. Dr Ashraf says that the whole concept of holistic integrated healthcare is that having a genetic mutation doesn’t mean that in most cases that you will actually have the disease, but it makes you at more risk.

17

“We are talking about the most common chronic conditions, like heart disease, chronic pain, migraine, cancer, thyroid… a multitude of conditions that make us age fast and die sooner. So instead of calling it anti-aging, I think the proper term is healthy aging – there is no such thing as anti-aging, I don’t like that term. “We do a panel to check you for being susceptible to things like fibromyalgia, or chronic headaches or pain. We all say, ‘why do I get it’ it’s because you may have that gene so you have to super bombard that patient with the right antioxidants and supplements and you have to detoxify them… you have to remove the toxins. Also called predictive medicine, it’s the new frontier of medicine and it’s what we do here at the DNA Center.”

DNA GENETIC PROFILING Intrigued? Want to find out if you have any disease timebombs counting down inside you? For those concerned about future illnesses or conditions that might be written in their genes, the DNA Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness offers check-up packages ranging in price from $1800 for an entry level check to $9500 for a three-month package that offers everything available; extensive tests and comprehensive treatment plan with five day detox. The centre also offers stress management packages; nutrition analysis and food sensitivities; sleep apnea screening and evaluation; weight-loss and detox; bio-aesthetics; anti-aging and beauty therapies, and cosmetic surgery. 1. Ayurveda

A

yurveda is the ancient healing science that explores physical, mental and emotional health to understand an individual’s unique energetic constitution that determines their body type and current imbalance. Ayurveda has a branch of Paediatric Medicine known as Bala Tantra or Kaumarabhrithya – healthcare for children through diet, lifestyle and the use of medicinal herbs. According to Ayurvedic Medicine Practitioner Dr. Asha Ann George, Ayurveda describes three aspects of mental ability: dhi (acquisition or learning), dhriti (retention), and smriti (recall ability). “When these three mental functions are balanced, a child’s mind and memory will be quick and bright. Ayurvedic treatment helps children attain these,” Dr Asha says.

How can Ayurveda help children?

“Treatment plans help improve immunity as well as calm and strengthen the nervous system – primarily through rejuvenating therapies and herbal formulations. Proper practice of Dinacharya (daily regimens), dietary advice etc. helps children maintain health and prevent diseases. Childhood diseases are treated with medication, therapy and lifestyle changes.

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using Ayurveda? Ayurveda enhances immunity, growth and memory in children. Effective treatments are for respiratory conditions like bronchitis, asthma, allergy, sinusitis, skin diseases, digestive disorders (eg anorexia and constipation), musculoskeletal disorders, joint pain, and rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Dr. Asha Ann George, Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, 1080 Al Wasl Rd, Dubai. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email hello@ breathandhealth.net.

2. Homeopathy

Dating back 200 years, homeopathy remedies are made of substances found naturally in nature and are suitable for very sensitive people, pregnant women and children. The treatment aims at building resistance to illnesses and improves immunity. Dr. Carol Ana Monteiro has practiced Classical Homeopathy for the last 10 years. She says children respond well to homeopathic remedies and recovery is quick. Remedies are gentle and have no side effects. Homeopathy is excellent for children struggling with delayed developmental milestones.

How can it help children?

“The therapy helps build children’s immunity against common childhood infections and illnesses that hamper intellectual development in their formative years. Homeopathy makes children more resilient to common childhood diseases.”

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using homeopathy? “Defective dentition (development of teeth), delayed walking or motor development, ADHD, eczema, bronchial asthma, sleep apnea, rhinitis and sinusitis, immunity building, bed-wetting, epilepsy, food allergies, pica (compulsive cravings to eat non-food items such as clay or paper, etc).” Homeopath Carol Ana Monteiro can be contacted through Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre. Tel +971 4 348 9940 or email dr.oseela@ breathandhealth.net

3. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy, also known as Physical Therapy, is a branch of rehabilitative medicine aimed at helping patients maintain, recover or improve their physical abilities.

19

Physiotherapist Shah Zaib Raza says it involves exercises, stretching, mobilization, manipulation and usage of different electric modalities. Treatment is provided to regain loss of function and muscle strength, to alleviate pain and to promote mobility after muscular weakness. Several studies have found that physiotherapy is one of the main treatments that help special needs children with their various physical challenges.

How does it help children?

“Balance training and coordination exercises for children with special needs help them in getting the right gait pattern. Giving them different orthotics helps their mobility. Getting them into society more quickly.”

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using physiotherapy? “I have seen remarkable affects in treatment of different kinds of Cerebral Palsy, although severe forms of Cerebral Palsy and Intellectual Development Disorder don’t respond.”

When would you advise parents to consider physiotherapy for their children?

“If their child frequently falls in walking or jogging or if the child is not achieving normal developmental milestones on time like neck holding, sitting, standing etc. they should come immediately for therapy. If child’s gait pattern is not normal then therapy is recommended.” Physiotherapist Shah Zaib Raza, Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, 1080 Al Wasl Rd, Dubai. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email hello@ breathandhealth.net.

4. Yoga Therapy

In yoga therapy, a personal practice is prescribed according to physical, emotional and physiological needs and circumstances. For example, a practice may be designed to maintain health cont. overleaf

and fitness, or to help remedy asthma, back or knee problems, hormonal issues, emotional disorders, chronic physical or psychological conditions. It can also enhance sports performance and facilitate meditative practices. Yoga Therapist and Personal Growth Coach Nermeen Hassan says yoga is a wonderful way to develop children’s character and physical body. “The combination of chanting or counting with asanas [poses] can help children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Linking movement specific to yoga with the animal kingdom or nature sparks children’s creativity and imagination.”

How does it help children?

“It depends on the age and the condition of the child. A child aged five or six with hyperactive tendencies and/ or no discipline can channel their extra energy in a group class. A child with scoliosis can be helped through asanas such as trikonasana. In most cases we can reduce the curvature of the spine as the child’s musculoskeletal system is still under development. We then alter the program and practice to fix the twist or at least stop the degeneration.”

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using yoga therapy? “Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), disciplinary issues, scoliosis, kyphosis, knee problems, lower back pain and sciatica, shoulder and neck problems, blood circulation, allergies, breathing problems, and digestive system problems such as acid reflux, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). High blood pressure, Multiple Sclerosis and diabetes can be controlled as opposed to healed.” Yoga Therapist and Personal Growth Coach Nermeen Hassan, Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, 1080 Al Wasl Rd, Dubai. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email hello@ breathandhealth.net

5. Occupational Therapy (OT)

Paediatric Occupational Therapists assess and treat motor, social, emotional, and behavioural skill development. This also improves the child’s confidence, self-esteem, social skills and general wellbeing. Occupational Therapist Divya Rajan says OT is about helping children develop skills in creative and fun ways.

How does it help children?

“With daily living skills; fine motor skills; gross motor skills; sitting; posture; or perceptual skills; such as telling the difference between colours, shapes, and sizes; body awareness and its relation to others; visual skills for reading and writing; play; coping; selfhelp; problem solving; communication, and social skills. The list could go on.”

What conditions are healed using Occupational Therapy?

“Occupational therapy is used in a variety of pediatric conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Developmental Coordination Disorder, and Sensory Processing Disorder, to name a few.”

www.awakeningsme.com

page 18-21 therapies for children2.indd 20

When would you advise parents to consider OT for their children? “If the child is having difficulty coping with their peer group, whether physically, cognitively, emotionally or socially, consider seeing an occupational therapist.” Occupational Therapist Divya Rajan, Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, 1080 Al Wasl Rd, Dubai. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email hello@ breathandhealth.net.

6. Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional therapy or counselling is key to mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. A nutritional therapist focuses on illness prevention through evaluating what the client consumes as well as habits that directly impact the nervous system, i.e. sugar, caffeine, etc. Nutritional Therapist Shivani Sarsthi says that what a child consumes makes a world of a difference if they are experiencing mental health conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), sleep disturbances, anxiety, etc. Finding the food triggers that

7. Play Therapy

A form of psychotherapy, Play Therapy helps children release, understand and overcome social, emotional and behavioural difficulties through play. Sessions can be one-on-one or in a group. The therapist will take a child’s case history using information obtained from parents and teachers, set goals with them and target these during the intervention. Play Therapist Tim Hydari says it’s the perfect modality for helping children between the ages of four and 12 deal with problems they themselves do not understand or cannot verbalise by using their natural form of communication – play.

How does it help children? enhance certain behavioural patterns is important. As a child is growing, their health is directly influenced by the dietary choices.

Q. How does nutritional counselling help children?

“Nutritional counselling for children and their parents helps with illness prevention, stabilising a healthy mood and promoting healthy tissue and bone growth in a developing child. The key factor is planting a healthy foundation for good eating habits. Later in life it is difficult to reverse poor eating habits and introduce new ones.”

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using nutritional counselling? “I have seen benefits in children struggling with mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD.” For nutritional counselling, Shivani Sarsthi can be contacted at Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, 1080 Al Wasl Rd, Dubai. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email shivani@ breathandhealth.net.

Apart from achieving goals outlined with the child’s parents and teachers (e.g. increased attention span, better verbal expression of feelings, etc.), Play Therapy helps a child: • Experience catharsis (purging of negative emotions) • With wish fulfilment (achieve goals and feeling states that might not be attainable day-to-day) • Role-play (children who improve their role-playing skills better understand their own as well as other people’s feeling states) • Self-confidence • Form a positive attachment (attaching to a positive role model helps children feel secure, appreciated and understood. Studies suggest a direct correlation between positive attachment and improved social, emotional and behavioural skills).

What kind of conditions have you seen healed using this approach?

“Anxiety disorders (e.g. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), disruptive behaviour disorders such as Oppositional Defiance Disorder; Pervasive Developmental Disorders (e.g.

21

Aspergers), eating disorders (Bulimia), and mood disorders (e.g. depression).” Contact Play Therapist Tim Hydari at Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre. Tel +971 4 3489940 or email tim@breathandhealth.net.

8. Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a light touch modality targeting the nervous system to help bring balance and stabilize health. It works by inducing a parasympathetic (rest and digest) response, which is the state necessary to facilitate the body’s natural healing response. Craniosacral therapist Shivani Sarsthi specialises in children and teens with mental health conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, trauma, bullying, etc.

How does it help children?

“Craniosacral Therapy works through assessing different pulses, rhythms of the craniosacral fluid (CSF) and mobilization of tissue through techniques such as light traction of the head away from the spine. Essentially, this creates space and allows more mobility amongst tissue and joint space. This positively impacts nervous system health.”

When would you advise parents to consider Craniosacral Therapy for their children? “This type of therapy is indicated for a child experiencing sleep disturbances, past trauma, bullying, ADHD, depression and/or anxiety.” Breath and Health Alternative Medical Centre, Villa 1080, Al Wasl Road,

Going forward, what are your plans for the business?

EG: “We have a lot of plans – but it all depends on the demand and needs. We trust the wisdom of the universe. We will all see together what is coming in the near future.”

What do you think of the wellbeing sector in the UAE? In your opinion, how has it changed and evolved?

ELISA FAUSTO

FOUNDER, INSPIRE YOGA + PILATES + FITNESS

After 20 years living in the UAE, a passion for wellness saw Filipina Elisa Fausto and her husband John consider opening a superfoods café but this plan was passed over in favour of a yoga and Pilates studio and on 1 October 2014, Inspire Yoga + Pilates + Fitness opened for business.

P

lease describe your business

EF: “Inspire is an everyday oasis for nurturing mind-body balance with heated and non-heated yoga, Pilates, and other fitness routines.”

What were your motivations for starting Inspire?

EF: “Passion for wellness and helping people live a healthier, happier and more balanced life. My partner and husband John and I had two thoughts for pursuing this passion: the first was to open a superfood café, the second was a yoga and Pilates studio. “We dismissed ‘food to wellness’ as we have no formal training in the food industry. I was drawn to opening a studio that promotes life-balance and breaking the stereotype of the people that practice yoga. The idea of Inspire was born: to provide a space for everyone to feel accepted at whatever stage they are in their wellness journey. “Our belief is that yoga is for everyone, regardless of age, gender, occupation, health condition and/or fitness level.”

How hard or easy has it been to get your business off the ground?

EF: “The seed of opening a studio was planted two years before the shoot actually broke ground. Once we made

the decision, everything happened quickly. We did a lot of research, financial planning and even on-the-job training at successful studios in other countries. This helped frame our plans. “As partners, my background is service (heart) and John’s is numbers and business (head), Yin and Yang one might say.”

What were the biggest challenges? EF: “The challenges we faced were finding the right space (we love where we are!) and the right builders (we had to change contractors which caused delays). “Since opening, the biggest challenge has been convincing people to come and try Inspire. This is for two main reasons: people who already practice yoga have studios they go to and for the people who haven’t ventured into yoga yet, we had to convince them that yoga/Pilates is for everyone and would greatly benefit them in so many ways.”

If you could go back and advise yourself when you were first deciding to do this, what would you tell yourself?

EF: “Make sure that your resources, resolve and patience run deep. It’s not going to be easy.”

Going forward, what are your plans for the future?

EF: “We will be starting suspension yoga and our series of ‘I-50’ Fitness Programmes. In time, we want to ‘Inspire’ more of Dubai followed by Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.”

What do you think of the wellbeing sector in the UAE? In your opinion, how has it changed and evolved?

EF: “More people are conscious, aware and willing to make little lifestyle changes to live a healthy, quality life. From modern medical facilities to different avenues of wellness including healthy food and fitness practices, wellness in the UAE is definitely moving forward.”

Inspire Yoga + Pilates + Fitness Indigo Central 8, Sheikh Zayed Rd, Dubai 052 777 6108 info@inspiremeyoga.net www.inspiremeyoga.net

What has response been like?

EF: “The response has been amazing. We are most proud that our clients tell us that they look forward to their visits. “We love seeing people progress in their practice. We have a regular client who had a lot of back and leg issues as a result of his other fitness activities

and long sitting hours at work. He now comes almost every day and says his aches and pains have diminished, that he feels huge changes in his body, is stronger and definitely more flexible. He attributes these changes to the practice of yoga and Pilates at Inspire.”

Today, the pair are ThetaHealing Masters with Certificates of Science in ThetaHealing as well as the Official Representatives for Lebanon. They teach all levels of ThetaHealing in five-star hotels in the UAE in addition to offering one-on-one sessions at their healing space in Motor City.

How do you describe your business?

MBS: “Awakening is a healing space in Motor City focused on ThetaHealing, a powerful technique that teaches you how to shift your brain wave into theta (dream wave) in order to witness the unblocking of fears, phobias, resentment, abuse, traumas and any negative limiting beliefs from the subconscious mind.”

A good reputation is also definitely key, so if you are kind, compassionate and generous to your clients they will recommend you.”

What were the biggest challenges?

MBS: “Absolutely wonderful from both local and expat clients and students. We have so far facilitated more than 60 classes and certified more than 700 practitioners. ThetaHealing resonates with all ages and cultures and covers a wide spectrum of issues in life from health to love and wealth. “Tony and I are strong believers in the power of the mind especially when it is in synergy with the unconditional love of Creation. MBS: “We are thrilled and honored to announce the big news that we will be hosting Vianna Stibal the Founder of ThetaHealing in November 2015 for the first time ever in Dubai. The classes will take place at Anantara Resort & Spa The Palm where we will be also teaching all our classes this year. “We also got recently appointed by Vianna Stibal as the official Representatives for Lebanon and we have just started teaching and spreading ThetaHealing there. Lebanon was welcoming and ready for change. “As for the UAE, our 2015 calendar includes so far 10 classes; in addition to Vianna’s four teachers’ training classes. We are also working on introducing ThetaHealing to large-scale gyms and to the corporate world as we believe in the strong positive influence that it can have on the individual performance and therefore the growth of a company and its success.”

How hard or easy has it been to get your business off the ground?

Winning the battle with

Crohn’s Disease Sama Afach suffered with Crohn’s disease for three years. In huge pain and discomfort, she persevered with medicines that didn’t work and doctors who didn’t know how to heal her. Then she found the DNA Health Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness in Abu Dhabi…

riginally from Syria and working as a banker in Abu Dhabi, Sama Afach developed Chrohn’s disease in 2011 at the age of 28. At the time she was depressed but did not see a connection with that and what was happening in her body. Crohn›s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus. An immune disorder, the body basically attacks its own digestive system, this causes inflammation through the whole tract and breaks down the internal tissue.

PAIN & DEPRESSION

“I didn’t know why I had it or how I got it,” says Afach. “I was suffering with ulcers in my mouth, I was depressed, I had inflamed and swollen gums, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and difficulty swallowing food because it burnt the tract. I also had difficulty defecating and ended up with four anal fistulas in my rectum that got worse when I had a depressive period. I had seven operations for anal fistula in three years! I lost 40kgs in the last four years and I used to pray to just die, to go to bed and not wake up. “The doctors told me that there is no obvious reason for why Crohn’s disease starts. It could be a hormone disorder, genetic inheritance, or a psychological issue. No one could offer a clear explanation for how it starts and why the body suddenly decides to attack itself. Doctors told me there was no cure. It would go up and down and the only thing they could do, they said, was to keep it under control with anti-immune medication that lowered my immunity so it had less power to attack... (what!?) I had to have very expensive injections once every week – thank God they were covered by my health insurance. At the beginning, this reduced the symptoms but my

No healing, despite all this medication. Until one thankful day, I found the DNA Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness on the internet while searching for weight-loss packages. Initially. I met them about lost weight - I didn’t know that this was the turning point of my life.”

MESSAGE IN A BODY

“When I mentioned my Crohn’s disease, the DNA team directed me to their medical experts. They said

the body is not stupid; my immune system is getting triggered for a reason. So they did a host of genetic, hormone and general tests. For me, the most important one was for food allergies. I was shocked to discover that I was allergic to almost all the foods in the world, everything from vegetables and fruit, to meat, nuts and sugar. The most deadly food group for me though was dairy products, which funnily enough was the main food group I consumed on daily basis. What happened, they think, was that due to long-term, high inflammation from a particular food, cont. overleaf

“In conclusion, I can say that the DNA team has saved my life. They added years to my life and added life to my years. I’m still in the recovery stage but I’ve stopped all the old medication. All my previous consultants are shocked that my body finally reduced the inflammation and started healing but they didn’t believe this was a result of changing my diet. They insisted I keep taking the medication because they

thought that for some reason my body finally decided to respond positively to their medication. I actually stopped taking the medication a long time ago. “I’ve been to my dentist every six months for the last two years, and he is also shocked at how my gums have returned to pink, are no longer swollen and there’s no more thrush in my mouth. Finally, my advice to everybody is you are what you eat, so don’t be cheap, fake and fast. Reconnect with your body and feel how Holy every part of it is and how great every part of it works only for you. Remember, be careful what you say to your body because it is listening. The

healing power of

bone broth From anti-aging and detoxing to healing joints and gut lining, bone broth is a centuries-old tradition that is fast coming back in fashion as its incredible health benefits are realised, writes Therapeutic Chef Neha Jamani.

A

n ancient tradition that has become a health craze - bone broth has turned into an uber trendy beverage that’s currently taking the US by storm. You might think a bone doesn’t have much to offer in terms of nutrition. But locked away inside its shell is a wealth of essential nutrients and minerals, anti-inflammatory and gut-healing properties, and good fats. Homemade broth is full of nutrients underrepresented in today’s modern diet and comes in a form the body can easily absorb. Folk wisdom throughout the world values broth for its healing properties. Until the modern era most households kept a stockpot simmering over the fire or on the back burner. They regularly ate from it and continually added whatever ingredients became available, making long cooked soups and stews the original ‘fast food’. Here are some of the health benefits of bone broth:

1. Collagen: Anti-aging and joint-healing

Collagen is a structural protein that builds strong skin; it is also the glue that holds the body together. Collagen supports the skin and internal organs, it helps our skin retain its youthful firmness, suppleness, elasticity and protects it against ageing and wrinkling. In nature, collagen is found in the skin, bones and joints of the animal. Cooking the bones breaks down the collagen so it becomes more easily digestible. This form of cooked collagen is better known as gelatin. Collagen production in the body slows down with age and ill health, causing skin, joints and other body parts to become drier, less pliable, thinner and weaker. Drinking bone broth is a good way to supplement the body and consume a natural form of collagen.

2. Rich source of minerals and Amino Acids

Bone broth is extremely high minerals and amino acids. Bones from land

A centuries-old tradition, bone broth is rich in the minerals and amino acids that keep us youthful. It heals the gut lining, supports joints, and detoxes the body of toxins.

animals are rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Fish and seafood broth are rich stores of iodine, which helps protect a sluggish thyroid – a major cause of weight gain, thinning hair and loss of energy. The mineral content from the bones is drawn out into the water and one

can know this for certain, because the bones are often crumbly when the broth is done cooking. Smaller bones like chicken and fish can sometimes entirely dissolve in the broth. Additionally some of the star amino acids in bone broth include glutamine, glycine, proline and alanine.

3. Supports the Digestive system

Bone broth is very healing for the digestive track and it helps to prevent inflammation that leads to aging. It is a rich source of glycine, which stimulates the production of stomach acid to aid digestion. Glycine is also an important component of bile acid which is necessary for the digestion of fat in the small intestine and also helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Glutamine is another amino acid abundantly found in both broths. It is well recognized for its health giving potential and is a natural remedy for ‘leaky gut’, which is an unpleasant and sometimes dangerous condition where the barrier between the gut and the rest of the body isn’t working properly. Allowing the molecules that should stay inside the gut to cross over into the bloodstream and potentially set off a cascade of auto-immune reactions. Glutamine helps maintain the function of the intestinal wall preventing this damage from occurring. It also helps the villi of the small intestine to heal and grow which is very important for people suffering from malabsorption.

5. Supports Detox

An often unknown fact of consuming bone broth is that it supports the body’s natural detox pathways. Glycine an amino acid present in broth is a key player in detoxification. Glycine supports the liver to remove and get rid of anything dangerous from the body, helping it to re-energize and de-age the cells. Glycine is also a precursor amino acid for glutathione, a powerful cancer-

4. Joint Health

Broth made from bones and joints contain several nutrients that help strengthen our own skeletal system. The collagen in broth supports the bones, tendons and ligaments and other flexible tissues. Another benefit of bone broth comes from glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) a family of carbohydrates in bones and connective tissues, which show positive effects on reducing joint pain. The best known GAGs are Glucosamine, consumed by thousands in supplement form to support joint health, and Hyaluronic which has been used as an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. According to the principle “like feeds like” broth gives our bone strength and flexibility, and our joints cushion and resilience.

curbing, age-slowing antioxidant that also supports liver detoxification. Bone broth is a valuable supplement food for all of us. It can be used as a foundational ingredient in soups, stews and sauces and also therapeutically for colds, digestive disorders, joint problems and skin health. With a myriad of bio available minerals and anti- ageing nutrients one can say it is time to put bone broth back on the table and nourish out bodies from inside out.

BONE BROTH FAQS Confused about bone broth? Let’s sort that out, right here, right now! Here’s your beginner’s guide… • Broth vs soup: What’s the difference? A stock is a flavourful liquid extract produced by simmering bone and/or vegetables and aromatics. Stocks are usually used to flavour other dishes like soups, stews and sauces and also as a cooking medium for grains, pasta and vegetables. Broths are similar to stocks but not quite the same, while there is some debate in the culinary world about the technical difference between and broth and a stock – a broth is generally considered salted or seasoned that can be consumed on its own. • How does long vs short cooking time affect the broth? A lab analysis by Biodynamic Wellness, CA in 2013 showed that longer cooking times affected the mineral content of the bone broth. The four top amino acids found in bone broth glutamine, glycine, proline and alanine were three times higher in long cooked broths compared to short cooked. Typically poultry bones can be cooked for anywhere between six to 24 hours, and harder bones like lamb or beef bones can cook for eight to 48 hours. • What’s the difference between homemade and store-bought broth? Broth often labeled as stock in stores often relies on high temperature and fast cooking techniques that result in a watered down version that does not gel. One misses out on some of the health benefits that can only be achieved by low temperature slow cooking which results in a gelatin rich broth. Additives like MSG and flavours are often added to store-bought versions of broth, so if you are interested in the healing properties of bone broth it is better to make your own.

Vegan Black Bean Brownies

Like a rich, moist and delicious chocolate cake, it’s hard to believe the main ingredient in these vegan brownies is black beans.

37

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons chia seeds, ground ¾ cup warm water 1 can (15oz) black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup dates, pitted ½ cup almond meal 1/3 cup raw cacao powder ¼ cup coconut oil 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of sea salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 175C degrees. Combine ground chia seeds and warm water in a bowl, stir and set aside for 10 minutes. In a food processor add all the ingredients, including the chia mix. Process until as smooth as possible, scraping down the sides and bottom occasionally, about 3 minutes. The batter will be thicker than a usual cake batter. Pour the batter in a lightly greased muffin pan and bake for 30 minutes. The top of the brownies will be firm and the edges will start to pull away slightly from the sides. Let the brownies completely cool, before gently removing them from the muffin tin. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

n Japan, women are paying a fortune in high-end salons to have live snails slowly glide around their face. The beauty industry is no stranger to bizarre and wacky anti-aging treatments. Let’s not forget sheep placenta in face cream but now it is the slimey, sticky substance excreted by snails that is being lauded as an anti-aging miracle. The reason is Helix Aspersa Muller extract (aka ‘snail slime’, this is the ingredient that the snail uses to quickly regenerate its own shell and skin when damaged (which is different to the stuff it uses to move around). Laboratory analysis of this extract shows that it contains a host of beneficial components for the skin including glycolic acid, collagen, elastin, allantoin plus many vitamins and minerals. Can it help repair human skin as well? Yes, according to scientific studies. Snail extracts have been increasingly used in numerous dermatologic conditions and recent literature attributes healing, soothing and antiaging properties to them.

SNAIL’S PACE

One study in 2009 called The efficacy of Helix aspersa Müller extract in the healing of partial thickness burns: a novel treatment for open burn management protocols found that snail extract is a

natural, safe and effective alternative treatment in open wound management of partial thickness burns in adults. “A total of 27 adult patients with deep partial thickness facial burns (group A) were treated by application of a snail extract cream twice daily for a maximum period of 14 days or until full epithelialization [wound is healed]. Results were compared with those of 16 patients (group B, control) treated by moist exposure burn ointment (MEBO).” The 27 people treated with the snail extract healed faster and had significantly less pain than the 16 people treated using MEBO. One manufacturer of organic beauty products to take advantage of snail extract to make anti-aging skin products is Dr Organic Ltd. Dr Organic has combined snail extract with organic aloe vera leaf juice; Sodium hyaluronate, a powerful and natural polysaccharide found in high levels in youthful skin with proven moisturising and anti-aging properties; Lemongrass oil for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; Lime oil and May Chang oil.

NO SNAILS WERE HARMED…

… but they were a little stressed out. The first thing many animal lovers are concerned

41

about when it comes to animals being used in products for humans is whether any are harmed in the process. No snails are harmed when the extract is harvested but they do undergo slight stress. Dr Organic says the process is as follows: 1. The snails are raised in a natural organic environment inside pots. Before undergoing the extraction process, the animal is carefully selected by weight, size as well as flesh and mucus colour. 2. The snail mucus extraction process is carried out after submitting the snails to gentle stress conditions for a short period of time. 3. There is no damage to the snails shell or skin but as they are extremely sensitive to touch, they sense a possible threat. 4. After a short period of stress they are placed onto a sterile surface where they carry out the secretion. This way, the secreted emission, which is different to the one the snail uses to move around, is much more enriched in regenerating substances and antioxidants. 5. Once the snail secretion is obtained, the snail is cleaned with distilled water and returned healthy back to its breeding place. This process of raising live healthy snails and the extraction method has been certified organic.

Snail Gel softens wrinkles, smooths skin, has antioxidant protection and improves hydration. Dr Organic combines snail extract with organic aloe vera leaf juice, sodium hyaluronate, lemongrass oil for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, lime oil and May Chang oil. Top toxic

ore and more natural beauty brands are appearing on shop shelves as consumer demand increases with more people realising how much harm environmental toxins can do to our health and wellbeing. For years, brands have been putting harmful ingredients in the products you apply to your skin and face, which can be potentially toxic once they reach your brain and internal organs via the skin. The body’s biggest organ, the skin absorbs whatever you put onto it and certain chemicals are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conclude that ingredients in products such as shampoos, hair-dyes, anti-perspirants, perfumes, cosmetics, face and body

creams etc, may be playing havoc with hormones that control our reproduction and development. Here are the top toxic ingredients to avoid and why.

1. Isopropyl Alcohol (SD-40):

Promotes brown spots and premature aging of skin. This drying and irritating solvent strips your skin of its natural moisture. Made from propylene, Isopropyl Alcohol is a petroleum derivative that’s found in many skin and hair products, fragrance and antibacterial hand washes. Symptoms of over-exposure can be nausea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness.

2. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine) and TEA (triethanolamine):

Ethanolamines are a hormone disruptive chemical that can form cancer-causing

nitrates and nitrosamines. Found in many shampoos, shaving creams and bubble baths, they are still widely used in the US but already restricted in Europe due to known carcinogenic effects.

3. DMDM Hydantoin and Urea (Imidazolidinyl):

Exposure may cause weakening of the immune system and cancer, plus irritations to the skin, allergies, depression and joint pain, amongst many other symptoms.

4. Synthetic Fragrances:

Many of these synthetic ingredients may be toxic or carcinogenic. Observations proves that fragrances can affect the central nervous system leading to depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioural changes.

any of us live in a busy world and teeter on the edge of sensory overload. We’re bombarded with things designed to attract our attention, from other people’s voices to ringing phones and near constant visual stimulation. There’s a theory that when one sense diminishes, another sense heightens as compensation. I was curious to see what would happen if I put myself in a situation where there was little to stimulate my vision, hearing and senses of smell, taste and touch. I’ve spent the last 13 years exploring alternative healing modalities, so I was excited to try floating at Point Zero in Dubai. This was my second float, but my first time at this centre.

WATER WOMB

Floating can help to relax the mind and body; the many mental, physical and emotional benefits include enhanced creativity, improved problem-solving abilities and accelerated healing of physical injuries. If I’m feeling irritated or a bit low, I’ve found that soaking in water mixed with sea salt or Epsom salt helps to cleanse my aura of negative or excess energy. I chose to use a floatation pod rather than a cabin, which is like a shallow minipool. I was shown into a nicely decorated room with a private shower and a pod that looked like a combination of a giant egg and a spaceship. An attendant talked me through the process, (shower, float, shower again), and explained which buttons to press for light, total darkness or a constellation of tiny lights, and which I could use to open the lid of the pod or call for assistance. I really appreciated the attention to detail; the Center supplied everything from slippers to earplugs and lovely-smelling shower products. I climbed in, closed the lid and opted for darkness. I love silence, and the quiet was so complete that I could hear my heartbeat. The salty water felt soft, and it was glorious to be able to lie back and surrender. It took me a few

MAY - JUNE 2015

page 44-45 beauty2.indd 45

A two-hour float is equivalent to eight hours sleep - making it great for jet lag. seconds to trust that I could relax my neck and allow the water to support my head. Such a relief when I did! I wonder if it’s like being in the womb, and not having to think about whether your needs will be met. It never crossed my mind to worry about anything; I was just delighted to be exactly where I was.

EXTRA-SENSORY PERCEPTION

The first time I floated several years ago, I was intent on paying attention to any images or sounds because I’d heard that sensory deprivation could enhance extra-sensory perception. In case you’re curious, I didn’t have any visions but I do remember hearing things. This time, I had no goals or expectations, and my experience was very body-centred. It felt as if I was doing myself a great kindness, and I spent some time thanking my body for everything it does for me and all that it allows me to see, smell, hear, touch and feel. It’s not uncommon for people to fall asleep while they’re floating; apparently a two-hour float is equivalent hours sleep, so floating can help with jet lag

and insomnia. I’m a huge fan of sleep – I consider it my gift to the world because I’m much nicer when I’m not awake – but I spent most of my time in the pod happily waving my limbs around and pretending that I was flying. It felt like a special sort of freedom. I had no way to gauge how much time had passed, but then I have a very dodgy sense of time even when I’m not in a floatation pod. Luckily, a light turns on when the session is over. I was so relaxed that I walked out in my slippers and had to return to collect my shoes! My conclusion as I left Point Zero, smelling of fruit-scented conditioner and yawning loudly? I am grateful to have this body, and I don’t mind bearing my own weight, but I’d also love to carry the sense of being very safe and completely supported with me all the time. Hunger Games:

Diary of a 10-day fast in Thailand

For a first-hand experience of the benefits of fasting as well as daily DIY enemas, Alexandra Salkova McKenzie headed to a resort in Koh Samui for 10 foodless days of meditation and introspection.

ost of us have heard about the benefits of fasting; It rests the digestive system and frees up energy for healing and detoxifiying the body; it enhances mental clarity and promotes an inner stillness that is said to enhance spiritual connection. I decided the time had come to experience it myself. A few last minute arrangements later I was in the beautiful island of Koh Samui, Thailand. My intention was to detoxify and rejuvenate my body as well as to clear my busy mind. I arrived at the resort late at night, was shown into my room and was told “tomorrow”.

Day 1: Initiation

• 2.30pm: Herbs • 4pm: Psyllium and Bentonite clay shake • 5.30pm: Herbs • 7pm: Psyllium and Bentonite clay shake • 8.30pm: Herbs During the fast, you need to drink plenty of water. The resort also offered diluted watermelon and pineapple juice and clear vegetable broth. TIP: Research resorts prior booking.

Day 2: Activation

After a restless night and with bleary eyes I got up early so as not to miss anything. I found the reception: the social area/ restaurant/beach front, sat down at the table and waited, ready for action. The sun slowly rose and the world gently woke up. Fellow vacationers started to turn up. It seemed time had stopped, the population replaced with slow motion zombies. A health consultant with no watch and a big smile arrived and introduced the newcomers into the program. The reality of fasting hit me and my stomach knotted in fear. We were shown around and given Oxygen Magnesium Powder to prepare our colons for cleansing. Exploring the neighborhood on this day was not recommended, unless you were close to bathrooms. A typical day in the resort: • 7am: Psyllium and Bentonite clay shake • 8.15am: Herbs (variety of herbal and mineral drops and Colloidal silver) • 8.30am: Yoga class • 10am: Psyllium and Bentonite clay shake • Colonic cleanse • 11.30am: Herbs • 1pm: Psyllium and Bentonite clay shake • Colonic cleanse

I woke up early to do the yoga class, which was to be held in the resort’s new yoga shala, an open-air structure with spectacular views of the ocean and an amazing rooftop for meditation. Unfortunately, the resort yoga instructor was a camouflaged fitness enthusiast and the classes were not ideal for hungry, energy-lacking, fasting vacationers. Movement is very important during detoxification. However, when energy levels drop or healings get activated, it’s rest that’s required more than anything. TIP: Bring a great book, as you’ll have little energy for anything else.

Day 3: Interaction

By day three, I was familiar with the program and so was curious to find out more about my fellow fasters at the resort. They were an eclectic group. My program buddy was a lady from Australia who had tried fertility treatment for many years. At 46, she delivered a healthy baby boy. Now age 50 she chose to have some healthy time for herself. There was a gentleman from South Africa, living in Abu Dhabi, who arrived for a 28 days program. An Ethiopian lady was there to set an example for her daughter, who was sick and ignorant of ways to make life changes. While a gentleman from Qatar was there to heal his diabetes. A few young women from India and Australia were there to lose weight and become happier.

I saw many hopes, dreams and expectations. The conversations during the day were fascinating, full of inspiration. TIP: Write a diary.

Day 4: Introspection

I felt fine, although a little hungry and lacking energy. Unlike others, I had not lost any weight yet. When we eat, our body uses the energy source – glucose. The excess glucose is stored in the liver and kept as glycogen for times without food, or when asleep. During sleep our body uses glycogen to recover tissue and to heal. The same happens when we fast. When glycogen is depleted, our body switches to ketosis - using fat as energy. This usually happens after three days. After seven days of fasting, the body preserves the protein and starts turning nonessential cellular masses (fibroids, bacteria, degenerative tissue etc.) into energy. These changes may also bring up emotions.

Day 5: Appreciation

I woke up early and as always I did my yoga routine and meditation on the roof of the yoga shala. I watched the dark starry night turning into dawn, a perfect time for meditation. The resort is situated on a spectacular beach and my retreat buddies often joined me for morning walks. Today, I was quite hungry. Food was a hot topic of every conversation. During ‘meal’ times, we shared our desperate recipes: mixing the vegetable broth with diluted beetroot juice. Or mixing the strong ginger tea with diluted pineapple juice. The resort’s hot topic was always food. We all spent hours discussing how to bake bread. We created a strong bond, promising to meet next year in Italy - to learn how to bake bread while drinking wine, eating cheese and prosciutto. TIP: Bring your own herbal teas.

Day 6: Hunger games

I woke up tired but opted for kayaking in the sea. The sea was protected by a coral reef and great for swimming. The corals are home to colorful fish, attracting snorkelers and fishermen. Mornings were calm and the picturesque scenery reflected in the sea like a mirror. The view from the resort was astonishing. Today, I noticed my body was detoxifying. My tongue had a white plaque coating, which was a good sign. My Australian buddy cheered out “we all have a white sock on our tongues”. I felt tired and very hungry. Local doves were making fun of me cooing “cacao! CACAO!” I was dreaming about my organic cacao in the kitchen at home.

Day 7: Indulgence

I slept more than 10 hours and woke up refreshed and dare I say it, energetic. I was still hungry but didn’t feel like eating. Feeling chipper, I set off for a trip to the town. It is a charming little place with a welcoming atmosphere. Local traders prepare a breathtaking display of Thai food. I walked through the market taking in exotic aromas of fresh grilled fish, noodle dishes, fresh fruits and herbs. TIP: Sample the local cuisine before you start the detox.

Day 8: Invigoration

I woke up feeling amazing. Everything had shifted. My body had released weight and I felt crystal clear space around my head. Fasting increases awareness. During my morning meditation I observed that my vision was clear and also my hearing and sense of smell seemed heightened.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 46-48 Travel detox2.indd 48

Part of our program was a daily massage. I chose lymphatic massages to help with detoxification. I always asked the masseuse to use coconut oil, as a natural sun protection. It worked beautifully instead of sun block. Additionally, I used coconut oil for oil pulling. In the morning, before you brush your teeth, take a spoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for about 20 minutes. Do not swallow. This method assisted me with reducing bacteria and improving taste in my mouth. TIP: Get coconut oil.

Day 9: Mindfulness

I woke up feeling better than ever, ready to break my fast. Breakfast was a fresh papaya. Lunch was raw Vietnamese rolls and dinner, a vegetable soup. I chew it consciously, allowing all my senses to acknowledge the myriad of flavors. The best food I have ever had. Mindfulness in all things is the key to happiness and health.

Day 10: Rejuvenation

Through my stay I had watched people leaving - happy, slimmer and grounded. Today it was my turn. Rejuvenated from being out in nature, in a relatively unpolluted environment (no chemtrails in the sky), I left Thailand with plans to keep up the raw vegan foods, do a one-day a week fast and the recipe for raw Vietnamese rolls.

neanderthal man goes new age

Neanderthal Man is all about the chickens Neanderthal Man is a 40-something, ex-British soldier who collects exotic knives and can strip down a semi-automatic rifle blind-folded. Until recently, he thought ‘chakras’ was a Latina pop star whose hips don’t lie. But things changed for the card-carrying caveman when he met the Tree Hugger… this issue, he gets clucky...

I

’ve been worried about chickens lately. Worried to the point of obsession. It started when Tree Hugger made me watch one of them horrific videos on YouTube that show how the poor little mites are kept prisoners in tiny cages where they’re so traumatised and miserable that all their feathers fall out. Honestly, sometimes I wish she’d just let me live in blissful ignorance. Since watching that video, I’ve had nightmares about turning into a giant chicken and being forced to lay eggs all day in a cell so small I can’t turn around. A couple of nights ago, I woke up screaming about omelettes and yesterday in Spinneys

supermarket I burst into tears when a woman put a box of eggs laid by caged hens in her trolley. “No, please no,” I pleaded through tears, “don’t support this barbarism. Look, buy these free range eggs from this lovely organic farm in the Irish countryside… for the love of chickens, please lady, do it for the chickens…” I think she went to get security but Tree Hugger hustled me out of there and into a café for a nice cup of tea and a sit down where she stroked my head and said ‘there there’ a lot while I told her about how we had to do something to save the chickens.

I have a friend in the UK who keeps chickens in his garden. He rescued the old girls from one of those awful battery farms that was going to kill them. Battery chickens tend to get destroyed after a year of life – I say ‘life’ but it’s more like ‘living hell’ - however their natural lifespan is about five years and they can lay eggs for most of that time. I want some rescue chickens! I want to liberate some imprisoned hens from captivity and nurse them back from being featherless and traumatised to happy, healthy and feathery. In the UK, rescuing battery hens has become quite a movement but not so in the UAE. I’m not sure how chickens would cope with being in the garden in Dubai’s summer though. I guess we’ll have to let them in the house when it’s hot. I’m sure Tree Hugger will be ok with that. We can put them in the spare bedroom. Chickens make great pets; apparently they’re really affectionate. And we’d have an endless supply of free-range eggs! So if our two cats object to the new family members, I’ll point out that at least the chickens contribute to the household. That, frankly, the cats had been freeloading for too long and it was time to get their paws dirty. But maybe the cats will come to love the chickens like feathered sisters and then we’ll film them all doing something cute and funny, it’ll go viral on YouTube and make us millions. Yeah, that’d be eggcellent.
