Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za A truck lost the load it carried at the N12 off-ramp on Voortrekker Avenue this past Thursday. tame TIMES was alerted of the accident by the Alberton CPF, and upon arrival at the accident scene learnt that the truck was on its way to HollywoodBets.

Travelling down Voortrekker towards Alberton City, the truck driver was forced to turn down the Kimberly off-ramp as he was trying to avoid a vehicle crossing Voortrekker from the

N12 on-ramp. Luckily the driver managed to avoid an accident with any vehicles, but unfortunately in the process of avoiding one accident the side of the truck burst open and lost its contents, which included alcohol and cigarettes.

Speaking to tame TIMES, the driver expressed his disappointment with the way many people, especially drivers, stopped and helped themselves to the alcohol and

cigarettes. He feared that he would face losing his job because he would not be able to account for the stock.

The driver, who was travelling alone to make the delivery, eventually was assisted by four homeless men who helped him pack the unbroken bottles.

SAPS arrived to restore order, as many passers-by were showing interest in the remaining alcohol.

The beginning of the year is always an interesting time as the wheels begin to turn and humanity grapples with the ideas of how they will make the new year a better year. I came across an interesting quote which I feel will be helpful to my personal and maybe even your pursuit of perfection.

This week we shift focus from education to the coming voter registration weekend (8 – 9 February) and World Cancer Day (4 February). We also had a chat with former Springbok player and current member of the coaching staff at the Alberton Rugby Club. While on the Springboks, we would like to congratulate the Blitzbokke on their Vegas victory over the past weekend.

A toast to the Toastmasters Amy-Mae Campbell

Many people find it very intimidating to speak in front of others and difficult to interact with others, which could ultimately mean the difference between landing that dream job or not, or getting the right message across. Toastmasters, an international society that originated in the USA in 1948, aims to tackle these fears head-on by empowering the toastmasters with confidence and various communication skills.

There are many English-speaking Toastmasters clubs in South Africa, but until recently there were no clubs catering for the Afrikaans-speaking community. Last year, a few existing toastmasters identified the demand for an Afrikaans-speaking club in Alberton and started the first official Afrikaans Toastmasters club. The Alberton Afrikaanse Toastmasters Klub held their first official launch for this year on Thursday 23 January and they are very excited for the year ahead.

“For me this club is about the passion I have for Afrikaans. I want to teach people how to overcome their fears of communicating in their mother tongue,” explains the President of the Afrikaanse Toastmasters Klub, Adri Rothmann.

Rothmann wants to challenge the idea that the Afrikaans language will fade out and she believes that clubs such as these will preserve and promote the language. “People say that Afrikaans is dying out, but we have more English people here joining the Afrikaans club because they see what a colourful language it is, and they want to learn the language and the culture behind it as well.”

Toastmasters welcomes not only those who battle to communicate effectively, but also excellent public speakers who are willing to teach others their skills. Rothmann

emphasises the fact that it is a social environment where everyone can learn from one another. The club will focus on various communication skills, depending on your specific needs; these include: offthe-cuff conversations, prepared speeches, presentations, interview skills, and more.

In addition, they also pay attention to more intricate details such as the purpose of a speech, the language, the time allocated for the speech and how well nervousness is controlled.

The club also aims to offer workshops to grade 11 and 12 learners who need to prepare for university or the working environment where communication skills are vital. Club members who excel can also partake in national and

international Toastmasters competitions for public speaking (in various categories) and win cultural bursaries and prestige titles.

Rothmann recently won the national title for the best speaker in Southern Africa.

The Afrikaanse Toastmasters Klub needs more members in order to carry out their goals, and would like to invite anyone, English and Afrikaans, who is interested to contact them, or attend one of their meetings.

TARGETED: Police advise residence to remain vigilant as thieves are always looking for a safe target

Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Four men descended on an unsuspecting resident of Grayville Street in Meyersdal on Thursday 23 January a little after 18:00.

The four men surprised the Meyersdal homeowner and his family shortly after he had arrived home from picking up some fruit from a deli shop in Alberton, and in a traumatic assault, which lasted less than ten minutes, they got away with jewellery leaving no one in the family of six, harmed.

According to the homeowner his gate had been giving them problems, so upon his arrival he proceeded to offload his groceries from his car into the house. When he returned to close the gate he was met by a silver hatchback with four male occupants, three of the occupants were armed. They then ordered the entire family into the house and the fourth male shut the house’s front door and the four well-spoken males proceeded to make their demands.

The victim’s wife, daughter and his three grandchildren were guarded at gunpoint.

The adults were relieved of all jewellery they had on at the time. One of the suspects then demanded they be shown to the safe. When the homeowner told them he did not have a safe, one of the men threatened to harm one of the children.

Fearing for his family’s life the homeowner revealed the location of the safe.

While the men were preparing to get away with the safe, the wife managed to hit the panic button, triggering the alarm and the suspects fled.

The suspects escaped in the silver hatchback, which looked to the victims as a Hyundai or a Honda.

Brackendowns officers who attended the scene warned against leaving gates open as thieves are looking for soft targets.

In an unrelated housebreaking in Douglas Harris Street last Tuesday morning, thieves made their get-away in a maroon Range Rover with a white top.

Die dubbelkajuitbakkie het deur die middelste spergedeelte tussen die N3 Noord en die N3 Suid gebars, in die lug opgeskiet en tollend die Nortjés se BMW 530D vanuit die lug aan die bestuurder se kant getref.

Die BMW se hele dak, sowel as die sleepwa se deksel, is deur die bakkie afgeruk, voordat dit so ent agter die sleepwa op sy kant te lande gekom het. Pieter se gesin het oorleef met beserings. Tiaan se kop is baie erg beseer, Ulindi het haar hand gebreek en Ruan het sy arm sleg gebreek, maar ongelukkig kon Pieter nie die slag oorleef

nie.

Daar was drie mense (al drie ook van Alberton) in die bakkie - die bestuurder, wat ‘n meisie in haar vroeë twintigs was, haar kêrel en ‘n vriendin. Die vriendin (21) is ook tragies oorlede in die ongeluk.

Dit is Ulindi en haar seuns se wens dat die gemeenskap Pieter sal onthou vir die mens wat hy was. Sy beskryf hom as iemand wat Jesus elke dag uitgeleef het. Hy was ‘n pastoor van die AGS kerk en hy het vanaf 2000 tot 2003 drie kerke in die Thokoza en Katlehong areas gehad, waar hy en Ulindi, saam met enkele mense wat vrywillig gehelp het, duisende maaltye per maand aan armes verskaf het. Tydens die begrafnis, wat op Dinsdag 14 Januarie in die AGS gemeente Kardia gehou is, het Ulindi in haar huldeblyk aan Pieter onder andere gesê, “Baie dankie vir wie en wat jy is. “‘n Wonderlike, liefdevolle man, ‘n onverbeterlike, liefdevolle en baie trotse pa wat jou kinders geleer het om die Here te dien met alles, en dat geen droom onbereikbaar is nie.”

New business hub set to attract billions

Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za As part of a major overhaul plan of the A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club, formerly known as Alberton Rugby Club, Lawrence Sephaka and a few other prominent figures in South African sports have joined the club. Lawrence forms part of a team of administrators who have been recruited in order to realise the vision introduced by Manie Reyneke, who is no stranger to the local club.

Sephaka met the game of Rugby purely by chance back in the mid-1990’s as a youngster at Reigerpark High School. His introduction to the game was thanks to a coach at the school and some brutal honesty on his behalf. Sephaka explains that he was in love with soccer before his introduction to rugby, his size though prompted a coach at the East Rand-based school to approach him and suggest that he join the rugby team, which was in dire need of players.

The now former Springbok player at that moment made the best decision he could have made, he took up the invitation and joined the team.

“I made the best decision,” an obviously happy Sephaka told tame TIMES, “I look back now and I realise soccer was not my thing.”

Sephaka explains that he realised that this game was life-changing at age 17, when in 1997 he found himself sharing camp with the 1995 World Cup winning Springbok team.

“At school level I found that my game was improving every year. When I started playing

things were pretty interesting as I found my way around the rules of this new game. Once I was acquainted with it there was no turning back,” Lawrance said.

At age 16 Lawrence was already exposed to first team rugby while at Springs Technical, and although his rugby career was already being molded he maintained focus of his grades in the classroom.

The love for the game prompted him to push himself even more and this dedication paid off as he was soon inducted into the junior structures at the Lions Rugby, where he later met Manie who describes Sephaka as a down to earth individual.

Lawrence brings a wealth of experience to A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club, both to the players (forwards) who he will be taking through the paces of scrums and lineouts, and the rest of the coaching staff who will learn the responsibility their positions come with.

Reyneke’s vision is cantered around the absorption of professional sportsmen into the administration of the various recognised sporting codes in South Africa.

The result of this will be a gradual improvement in the standard,” said Reyneke, “and that is why Sephaka was brought in, so that we can take the club to the next level.”

The very same club that had fostered the likes of Derick Minnie, Ruan Nel, Jaco Kriel and Andre Pretorius is back in the business of creating local heroes. tame TIMES is fully behind A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club and encourages the Alberton community to do the same.

On 4 February people from all over the world will dedicate their thoughts and time to cancer survivors and sufferers around the world. This year, the theme of World Cancer Day is “debunk the myths around cancer.” The aim is to disillusion the public about false beliefs surrounding cancer, and to substitute these with the correct knowledge they need to detect cancer earlier rather than later.

World Cancer Day started in 2000, at the first World Summit Against Cancer that was held in Paris. The intention was, and still is today, to increase global awareness of cancer, to commit to improving the quality of life of cancer patients and to acknowledge the need for continued investment in and advancement of cancer research, prevention, and treatment. World Cancer Day has come to represent an annual reaffirmation of the importance of these goals.

According to Prof Michael Herbst, Head of Health at CANSA, cancer awareness has become exceedingly important in the 21st century. “While there have been numerous advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, factors that should contribute to the decline of the disease, the number of new cancer cases diagnosed each year has globally continued to increase,” Prof Herbst explains.

Erika Marais, a nurse at the CANSA Alberton branch, says that what makes cancer so dangerous is that it is an illness that starts within (cells that function abnormally), which makes it much more difficult to prevent. There is also no one test that can determine whether you have cancer at all, or not. One has to run specific tests for specific cancers in order to spot them. This is why cancer knowledge and identifying warning signs are so important.

Make 4 February your day to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Do something special for a cancer patient or celebrate life with a cancer survivor, and spread messages around causes and prevention of cancer.

Talking about radiation Supplied by Netcare

Treatment may include the use of drugs (chemotherapy or hormone therapy), surgery and radiation therapy. In radiation therapy high energy doses of radiation are used to destroy cancer cells. It is often used in conjunction with surgery in certain types of cancer, depending on the site, stage and potential risk for relapse.

The most common form of radiation therapy is external beam radiation.

It points high-powered x-rays from outside the body straight at the tumour to eradicate cancer cells. This differs from x-rays used for diagnostic purposes, with high energies in the megavoltage range used in radiation therapy.

During therapy, both normal and malignant cells are harmed.

However, cancer cells are more sensitive to radiation as they are replicating much more rapidly.

The objective of radiotherapy is to kill as many cancerous cells as possible while preserving healthy cells. This is achieved by delivering the radiation in low doses over a prolonged period (four to seven

weeks).

Like any treatment radiation has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages -It may substantially lower the chances of recurrence of breast and lung cancers when used in conjunction with other cancer treatments.

-Unlike chemotherapy, radiation is precisely delivered to one particular location, so it is possible to limit damage to healthy cells to only the immediate surrounding areas.

Disadvantages -Fatigue -Skin irritation -Diarrhoea -Nausea -Vomiting - Mouth and throat problems

Reporting pets and taking care of them *Supplied by Alberton SPCA Alberton SPCA continues to take in numerous animals each day. Some of these animals come in as ‘strays’. Strays have to wait seven days before they can be put up for adoption and during that time they can become ill, which reduces their chances of finding a home.

If you find a dog or cat, please report it to the SPCA because there might well be a distraught owner searching for their pet. When you keep a lost animal without notifying the SPCA or advertising where you have found it, you are in fact stealing from someone else. If the owners do not come forward, you can no doubt keep the animal in question. Do not assume if it’s a stray, it’s unwanted.

The best way to ensure your missing pet is returned to you, is to have a microchip inserted into the pet. This is a tiny unobtrusive chip injected into the animal with your details, so that we can have your details in a central database.

At Alberton SPCA, they charge R250 for

a microchip. If you do it when you adopt a cat or dog from Alberton SPCA, the chip only costs R200.

Other pets, especially dogs, are brought to the SPCA because their owners do not want them anymore. They complain that their dogs aren’t obedient. Last week we started our discussion on depression, and distinguished between three different concepts of depression, namely symptom, syndrome and disorder. This week we discuss disorder.

A disorder impacts not only the person’s behaviour but also causes a significant impairment in functioning as it persists over a longer period of time. This kind of depression is deeper entrenched, handicapping the person to rationally think and deal with their current problems and emotions. Often decisions made in this phase are highly regretted later on. This kind of depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the body and are often hereditary. Distinctions can be made between various types of depression disorders, of which Bipolar are most probably the best known. A psychologist can diagnose a depression disorder. It is alo best to consult a psychiatrist for medical treatment of a disorder.

Ek onthou nog duidelik hoe ek en my boeties skelmpies perskes gepluk het uit ons bure se perskebome, en sodra ons oom Sarel met die een houtbeen hoor aangeskoffel kom het en roep “julle klein klitse!” dan het ons ‘n vinnige lyn gesny oor die muur, so dat jy net stofbolle sien trek het. Die dogtertjies het weer vir ure buite met rek om die bene “England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales” gespeel en spookstories vertel in die nag.

Ons kinders sou soms ook vir ure weg wees op ons fietse en tok-tokkie speel die hele buurt deur.

Maar o wee, ek is bevrees dat my kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders uitmis op hierdie avonture, omdat hulle al hoe minder belangstel in verbeelding en meer staat maak op hulle selfone en rekenaarspeletjies vir vermaak.

Dit is nou wel die elektroniese en tegnologiese era en ek sal nie ontken dat e-posse en selfone die lewe in baie opsigte ook geriefliker gemaak het nie. As ek met enigiemand moet kommunikeer dan kan ek binne sekondes al my boodskap by hulle uitkry. Dit spaar my beslis rookseine en posduiwe! Ek onthou hoe ek in die verlede toe Gysie op die grens was vir maande geduldig moes wag om ‘n briefie of twee van hom af te ontvang in die pos.

Nee kyk, dit was maar anderste tye daardie.

Ons het werklik geweet hoe om ons verbeelding aan te wend. Ek onthou nog hoe ek en my familie opgewonde voor die ou draadloos gesit en luister het na Niel Armstrong se aankoms op die maan, waar ons geen visuele beelde gehad het nie en self moes dink hoe dit op die maan sou lyk.

Soos wat een generasie oud word, is dit seker tyd om sekere tradisies af te skaf en nuwes aan te leer. Ek is redelik eng as dit by sekere dinge kom, soos om skottelgoed met die hand te was (ek glo nie in skottelgoedwassers nie), maar ek het darem ‘n selfoon en ek kan met trots sê dat ek e-posse en sms’e kan stuur. My kleinkinders het my mooi touwys gemaak.

Tip: Die wêreld gaan vandag so vinnig vooruit, maak seker dat jy jou kinders nog leer hoe om eenvoudig net kinders te wees, wat nog boom klim en maaltafels ken en hulle verbeelding kan gebruik. Anders, wat gaan die ouers maak as die beurtkrag inskop?

Dalk sal ‘n spookstorietjie of twee tog handig kom.

History: The Mighty Men Conferences the Johannesburg region.

In a meeting held at Shalom Ministries in Greytown, ‘Oom Angus’ spoke to us and handed the baton over to Victor Lemmer, founder of Summit of God Ministries, to host the Mighty Men Conference in Johannesburg. This will be an annual event and the first will take place in March.

“Being on Oom Angus’ farm in July 2013 was such an honor, but the hard work starts now. We are blessed and honored to host this event with God as our focus point,” said Victor Lemmer.

The original Mighty Men Conferences took place seven times on Angus Buchan’s Farm Shalom in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal. The final two, held in 2009 and 2010, each attracted between 200 000 and 300 000 conference goers.

Most of those who attended the conference called it a life-changing experience.

According to Lesley Ashwell, who has been attending the conference ever since it started, “It was absolutely awesome and humbling, seeing grown men cry.”

“Angus said it is the last one held by Shalom. From now on there will be Men’s Conferences all over, but they will not be organised by Shalom,” said Shalom Ministries’ spokeswoman, Bianca Ortmann.

E-toll billing complaints pour in The Democratic Alliance (DA) has received over 300 e-toll billing complaints from the public since the call to submit queries to them.

This is ahead of the DA’s intended submission to the National Consumer Commission.

Below are a few of the bizarre complaints the political party have received: • A resident in the Western Cape who has not travelled on Gauteng’s roads since the implementation of e-tolling has received two invoices to date, one of which was for a motorcycle, when in fact her only vehicle is a Corsa Lite car.

• A resident received a sms from SANRAL to say that he owes R00.00 and has been handed over to the VPC • People who do not even own a vehicle or have a drivers licence are receiving sms’s from SANRAL with outstanding debt. One of these sms’s was for an amount of R1362.63 • Many people have received a final sms warning without having received an official

invoice • Gauteng residents who do not travel on tolled roads are receiving sms’s for final pay notices from SANRAL The most common complaints are people not receiving invoices, incorrect amounts for actual travel and bills going to people who have not travelled recently.

Mmusi Maimane, the DA Gauteng Premier Candidate said, “It is clear that the billing system is not working. Not only is the e-tolling system unjust in its implementation but residents are now faced with mounting billing challenges.

I want to encourage people to submit their billing complaints to us by sending an e-mail to enocentn@da.org.za or tweeting a picture of their sms or bill @DA_News using the hashtag #No2etolls.”

Maimane will then take these complaints to the National Consumer Commission as part of his plan to fight e-tolling at every turn, both now and if elected Premier of Gauteng in 2014.

Emergency 10111: language complaint investigated At a meeting between the Gauteng Head of the 10111 emergency call centre of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and AfriForum, the civil rights organisation was assured by the SAPS that the complaint regarding the refusal of service in Afrikaans by a 10111 operator was taken seriously. This meeting follows an incident two weeks ago when an emergency call from AfriForum was disconnected after Afrikaans service was requested.

According to Alana Bailey, Deputy CEO at AfriForum responsible for language matters, AfriForum was assured that disciplinary steps have already been instigated against the operator who was unwilling to assist in Afrikaans. AfriForum was also assured that multilingual service will be made available on all shifts, as far as possible. If an operator cannot speak the caller’s language of choice, everything possible will be done to refer the call to someone who can assist.

Following the abovementioned incident, AfriForum has launched a complaints line to inquire from the

public whether they’ve encountered similar problems, and several complaints from across South Africa were received.

Those complaints were also brought to the attention of the SAPS. The SAPS requested that members of the public who are dissatisfied with the service of 10111 call centres, should report their problems to their complaints line at 0860 13 0860.

This is necessary to ensure that problems are identified and solved.

A huge problem for the SAPS is people abusing the emergency line with triviality and prank calls. During one weekend alone, the SAPS emergency call centre in Gauteng received 40 000 calls of which only 3 500 were serious. This puts staff under immense pressure, it results in calls from people in life-threatening circumstances going unanswered, and it wastes resources funded by taxpayers. AfriForum has undertaken to assist the SAPS in creating awareness among the public of the fact that 10111 is a service solely for the reporting of emergency situations, which necessitates

immediate response or where lives are threatened.

“AfriForum appreciates the urgency with which the SAPS has dealt with our complaints and will gladly assist them in ensuring that the 10111 emergency number is not abused.

We will inform our members on a continuous basis to memorise emergency numbers like the fire brigade and emergency medical services and to refrain from calling 10111 when these services are needed,” Bailey said.

“People should remember that a triviality like a noisy dog in their suburb is not a reason to call 10111, even if the barking is annoying.

Parents also need to teach their children that a prank call to 10111 can cost someone’s life and that it’s unacceptable under all circumstances.

The abuse of an emergency number is a punishable offence.” The SAPS and AfriForum will stay in contact to jointly address any further language or other problems with regard to the emergency service number.

Suspect arrested for dagga possession On Friday 17 January Alberton SAPS had a followup awareness campaign at Ronebult.

It shows that the message did go through as SAPS received numerous tips which we are working on. To show that SAPS are committed to working with the community, on the very same day Lt Col Maswanganyi and Const Mgedezi managed to arrest one suspect for possession of dagga.

Crime against children (part 1) Know emergency numbers by heart.

Children should never approach a vehicle unless they are absolutely sure they know the occupants.

Teach children never to accept sweets or ice cream from a stranger if the parents are not present.

Teach children that molesters and abductors usually look like everybody else.

Be observant to be able to identify any abnormal behaviour from your child.

If children routinely see the same car parked or following them on their normal walking routes from school, they should report it to trusted adults immediately.

Educate children so they know about sex, pornography and drugs.

Every child should at least know a trusted neighbour who is at home during the day that can be notified in case of emergency.

If a stranger in a car asks you a question, don’t get close to the car, and never get in.

Listen to what children tell you about their lives, friends, school, worries, and fears.

Boy arrested for firearm possession One firearm was removed from the streets of Alberton on 19 January at about 20:15.

The police were called to a certain pub in Randhart with information that someone was in possession of a firearm.

On arrival the police found Mark, a Fox security guard, with a suspect and a firearm on the ground. After interviewing the two it was established that the suspect, a near-adult boy, stole his mother’s firearm after he was teased at the club.

He drove home, stole the firearm and went back to the pub but was stopped by Mark before he could reach the pub, after he heard the mother calling for help on the CPF radio. The boy was arrested on scene for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

An investigation is going on so as to determine how the boy got hold of the firearm. It is likely the mother will be charged for negligent handling of a firearm if it was not in the safe, or if the boy had access to the safe keys.

The mother might also lose the licence to possess the firearm and the firearm taken for good from her. The arresting officers were Const Nthlane and Const Mdluli.

Preparation for the upcoming Elections 2014 – What’s it all about? elections: Register *Article supplied by Manny de Freitas MP.

I’M REGISTERED TO VOTE...

In 2014, South Africa will not only celebrate 20 years of freedom from apartheid, it will also hold the country’s fifth national democratic elections.

With the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announcing a second and final round of voter registration on 8 and 9 February.

WHEN WILL THE ELECTIONS BE HELD? The elections must take place some time in 2014, but the final date will only be known once the president has proclaimed it in the Government Gazette.

WHO MAY VOTE? To be eligible to vote, you must: Be a South African citizen.

Be at least 18 years old.

Have a green bar-coded ID book, or an ID smartcard, or a temporary identity certificate.

These are all issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

Finally, you may only vote if you are registered on the voters’ roll.

HOW DO I REGISTER TO VOTE? Any time before the president proclaims the date of the election, you can register at your local IEC municipal office – but you must first contact the office and make an appointment.

The IEC has a list of municipal offices with all the contact details you need.

On the weekend of 8 to 9 February, you can register from 08:00 to 17:00 at the voting station for your voting district. Find your voting station using the map on the IEC website, or phone 0800 11 8000 on Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.

DO I HAVE TO REGISTER BEFORE EVERY ELECTION? Unless you have moved into a new voting district, you only have to register once. If you have moved, you have to register for your new district. If you remain on the voters’ roll for your old voting district, you will only be able to vote at your old voting station. You may have to register again if your voting district changes.

HOW DO I CHECK IF I AM CORRECTLY REGISTERED TO VOTE? You can check if you are registered to vote, and for the right district, in a number of ways: Send an SMS with your ID number to 32810.

Check your voter registration details online – this will also give you the address of your voting station.

Phone the IEC’s call centre on 0800 11 8000 – this is toll-free if you phone from a landline.

Check at your voting station during the registration weekend of 8 to 9 February.

Check at your local municipal electoral office during office hours.

HOW OLD MUST I BE TO REGISTER? Even though you may only vote if you are 18 or older, you may register on the voters’ roll from the age of 16.

HOW DO I REGISTER FROM OVERSEAS? Go to your nearest South African embassy, high commission or diplomatic mission with your valid ID and passport. Note that you can’t register with only your passport – you must have your ID document as well. Both documents must be valid.

CAN I VOTE BEFORE I LEAVE SOUTH AFRICA? If you will be overseas on Election Day and would like to vote in South Africa a few days beforehand, you can apply for a special vote at your municipal electoral office.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I REGISTER? Go to your voting station, municipal electoral office or, if voting overseas, your diplomatic mission.

Fill in the Application for Registration as a Voter form. Your ID book will be scanned.

A bar-coded sticker will be pasted in your ID book.

Note that completing the form and receiving a bar-coded sticker doesn’t mean that you’re registered; it only means that you’ve applied for registration. Your application must still be processed, which may take up to seven working days.

In Gauteng alone over 242 000 new registrations were recorded on the registration weekend.

South Africa is preparing for a second voter registration weekend where citizens can register at their nearest voting station. This is in anticipation of the National and Provincial Elections, which is scheduled to take place in April or May. But what is this all about? Didn’t we just have elections only three years ago? Every five years elections are held where all registered voters can vote for the party of their choice, who sends their representatives to Parliament.

This election is known as the National Elections. On the same day, another election is also held, elections for the Provincial Legislatures. Here too registered voters are able to vote for the party of their choice that also sends their representatives to Provincial Legislatures. Provincial Legislatures are the Province’s Parliament. This is why voters receive two ballots when they arrive at their voting station to vote. The more votes a party gets the more seats, or Members of Parliament or Members of the Legislature, the party will be allocated proportionally.

Only South African citizens who are registered to vote get onto the voters roll and are thus eligible to vote. You only register once off as a voter and are not required to register every time there is another election. However, if you have previously registered and have since moved to a different address you are required to go to the nearest voting station nearest to your new address to advise the IEC (Electoral Commission) of your move and therefore the new voting station that you are allocated to. This will ensure that you are on the voters roll for that particular voting station.

Once you are registered as a voter you are permitted to vote in any subsequent election. On average about two years after the General and Provincial Elections, Local Government Elections (LGE) are held. This explains why 2011 elections were LGE. LGE are a little different, as instead of receiving only one ballot as you do for Parliament and the Provincial Legislatures, in LGE a voter is given two ballots. One ballot provides the voter the opportunity to vote for the party of their choice. Here too, just like the National and Provincial Election, parties send their representatives off a list proportionally.

However, this accounts for only half of the councillors elected. The other 50% of councillors are directly elected off the second ballot.

These elected councillors serve as your councillor in a demarcated area called a ward. A ward is usually a collection of adjoining areas and suburbs.

The IEC works hard at encouraging more and more people to register so that the number of voters is as large as possible. The November voter registration weekend appears to have been a success. IEC statistics indicate that there was a good turn up of people to register. In Gauteng alone over 242 000 new registrations were recorded on the registration weekend. This is good news all round as this solidifies our democracy and ensures that more people make direct decisions about the people that will be representing them in the various legislatures.

The IEC has not yet supplied the detail of how many people registered in the South but from the DA’s records we can confirm that over 15 000 new registrations took place in the South alone.

The next step is for more people to register in February and the final step is up to each one of us: to vote on Election Day for the party that you believe will make South Africa better.

The IEC held the first voter registration weekend for the 2014 elections last year during the month of November. This election registration drive took place safely at most of the approximately 22 300 voting stations, which will be used for the 2014 elections.

By Nieto Hernandez Imagine it really didn’t matter if you voted or not. Imagine votes really didn’t count, or worse, imagine scores of South Africans did not wake up on 27 April 1994. Now stop imagining because the truth is that every vote counts and the only better tomorrow will be influenced by those who follow the guidelines; register to vote, then vote.

Even though I set out to discuss the importance of voting, I quickly realised we vote every day. For what more is voting if it isn’t choosing the direction in which you want your life’s ship to sail? What more is voting if it isn’t deciding what you like over what you dislike?

The real question about voting should actually be a question which addresses choices, and that is where, in my opinion, many in our beloved South Africa miss the point. Choosing should always be premised on the individual’s ability to process information as an individual. Many of my countrymen find themselves devoted to old teachings or for the religiously inclined; faithful to old commandments.

Being stuck in old ways fails the progress of the entire nation, but that is hardly the worst consequence; the worst is that the growth of the individual is severely compromised.

The most disturbing reality I’ve observed in our generation is the lack of interest in the options available to voters. How does one make an intelligent decision without scrutinizing the offerings?

As almost all the colours that represent our political landscape have been recently delivering their manifestos and holding rallies, I question the number of ‘new’ faces at these gatherings. Are there any who attend with an open mind ready to be swayed, or have the minds been made up?

In short, I just want to know what informs the vote. Do I vote green because I don’t like orange, or do I vote green because I’ve actually considered what both are offering and have as an individual decided that green represents my ideals?

Journey to 30 something

Sharing in Ocean Basket’s voyage Every person has to enjoy their job and luckily for me I do. I am very blessed to be afforded the opportunity to attend interesting and sometimes luxurious events obviously with the notion of me writing about it.

Last week I got to spend a day sharing in Ocean Basket’s voyage and got to meet the founders of this well known franchiseGeorge and Fats Lazarides. How many people can say that?

What this entailed was meeting at the Ocean Basket in Melville, which is still dressed in the original Ocean Basket decor and always will be. Media were welcomed with lovely platters of sushi (I declined as I don’t eat sushi).

Manny Nichas, the director of the Ocean Basket group and George Lazarides, the founding partner told the story behind the growth and development of Ocean Basket.

After this we travelled on bus, where we were treated to some bubbly (once again I declined. By this time I am sure the PR company was thinking, ‘why did we invite her?’) to Menlyn Park Shopping Centre to the first Ocean Basket store ever opened where we had lunch.

Here we met Fats, brother to George and the leader of the business, as well Grace Harding, who is responsible for the overall running of the business. She is the rose among all the Ocean Basket thorns.

So what did I learn from the day besides being reminded that I am a lover of prawns.

Well the first Ocean Basket opened in 1995.

They currently have 176 stores in nine territories (7 in Cyprus, 2 in Mauritius, 2 in Dubai, 1 in Nigeria, 1 in Gabarone, 2 in Swaziland, 3 in Namibia, 1 in Lesotho and 2 in Zambia.)

However their target for 2017 is to have 300 stores in 16 territories. They will be taking their wildly successful concept to the rest of Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Ocean Basket has bagged the award for most loved restaurant in Cyprus last year and recently were awarded the International Hotel and Restaurant Quality Award in Madrid. No wonder Ocean Basket is South Africa’s largest chain of seafood restaurants.

The best for me was when we climbed back on the bus to find two delicious Baklava waiting to be eaten on our seats - this item I did not decline but ate happily on my way back to Johannesburg. @laurellewilliam laurelle@tametimes.co.za

Flamboyant, charismatic, passionate and melodious beyond belief; this is how Dutch superstar Herman van Veen can be described. Van Veen visited South Africa this month and performed at Emperors Palace on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January at the Theatre of Marcellus.

Van Veen has performed in South Africa before, but what made this show even more memorable, was his talented accompanist: the world famous guitarist Edith Leerkens.

Herman van Veen is a musician in every sense of the word: he is a performer, a singer, a composer and a multi-instrumentalist. Apart from this, he is also internationally admired for his creative miming and sketch performances.

In his most recent performances at Emperors Palace he lived up to these expectations, and gave the audience every reason to call him a superstar in South Africa as well.

Van Veen sang Dutch, French, German and English songs and especially appealed to the Afrikaans audience, as Afrikaans and Dutch are very similar languages. He and his three-man band intrigued the audience with a skilful and beautiful combination of various musical instruments, such as piano, violin, marching drums and bongo drums, bass guitar and acoustic guitar. Van Veen played each of these instruments at various stages throughout the performance, and even used the piano ledge itself or a speaker for percussion.

His music has a rich, classical acoustic and almost jazzy sound, outlined with creative harmonising of voices and musical instruments. His performance often mirrored that of a narrator sharing stories with the audience or reciting poetry. His songs also don’t have clear choruses, but sometimes almost flow into one-another, only separated by dramatic thumps on a drum.

Van Veen is a very energetic performer; he would often jump up and down to the beat of a song, or physically act out the words of his songs. He also humoured the audience by pretending to be falling over, or by trying to keep a note for as long as possible, which the audience enjoyed immensely.

Van Veen concludes his South Africa music tour with two final performances at the Paul Culver Amphitheatre in Grabouw, on Friday 31 January and Saturday 1 February.

Hierdie atletiekbyeenkoms is die eerste geleentheid van drie wat die atlete het om voor te berei vir die opkomende Intertegnies en Puk-interhoër, wat net om die draai is. Marais Viljoen het hierdie byeenkoms gemaklik gewen, en die res van die seisoen lyk belowend.

Volgens Mnr Van Zyl, onderhoof van Marais Viljoen, is die afrigters nog besig om in elke item die beste atleet uit te soek. Atlete wat potensiaal wys het by hierdie vriendskaplike byeenkomste kans om teen ander skole deel te neem, sodat hulle kan sien waaraan hulle moet werk. Die deelnemende skole was Hoërskool Elspark en Hoërskool Linden. Daar lê nog twee vriendskaplike byeenkomste voor.

Wednesday 15 January was the beginning of a new chapter of many children’s educational journey. All the grade R and grade 1 Frances Vorwerg School learners were excited to get started with their school work and making of new friends.

SA number one junior Kyle McClatchie is primed to lead a quartet of talented juniors in a two-day test against France at his home course, the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, at the end of January.

The Ekurhuleni junior recently took the number one spot on the South African Golf Association’s junior rankings after lifting the Dr Bam Nomads National Order of Merit title in a play-off.

McClatchie will be joined by reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Thriston Lawrence

from Mpumalanga, Nomads SA Boys u/17 champion Jovan Rebula from Southern Cape and reigning Kenya Open Amateur champion Hennie du Plessis from Polokwane in the two-day event.

The 16-year-old KES scholar was delighted with the chance to represent South Africa in the curtain-raiser to this year’s South African Stroke Play Championship.

“Getting international exposure is always a plus for us, but you also couldn’t ask for a better way to prepare for the Stroke Play than to go toe-to-toe against the French,” said McClatchie.

“We know we will have to bring our best to the course, because the French are always tough competitors.”

The format for the test will be foursomes and singles on both days and the matches will be contested on the Masai Mara course at Serengeti.

“It’s pretty cool that we are playing at my home course, but the Masai Mara is a really tough layout and I just hope I can use the advantage to gain an early edge,” said McClatchie. “The fairways are deceptive because they appear wide, but if you hit it just a little offline, you can be in real trouble. And the greens are very undulating, so you have to hit it to the right side of the pin to score.”

The four French juniors facing the South African onslaught are Alexandre Daydou from Cannes Mougins Golf Club, Paul Elissalde from Biarritz le Phare and Chantilly Golf Club’s Thomas Le Berre and Victor Veyret.

Following the Test, the eight players will complete the 144-man field chasing glory at the 35th South African Stroke Play Championship at Benoni Country Club from 4 to 7 February.

Elouise Minnie was die toppresteerder en spog met 11 onderskeidings; Emma Wessels pronk met 10 onderskeidings en nog drie leerlinge het 9 onderskeidings behaal. Daar was nog 9 leerlinge wat almal 8 onderskeidings behaal het. In die algemeen het 63% van Helpmekaar se leerlinge ‘n gemiddeld van 70% en hoër behaal; 90% van die leerlinge se eindjaar-rapport was beter as hul graad 10, 11 en 12 rapporte; 28% het vyf onderskeidings en meer behaal en in totaal was 54% die laagste gemiddeld.

Motswako Soul has launched

Melo’s music is what she would like to call Motswako Soul, a combination of Setswana and English lyrical poetry on a soulful-jazzy melody.

Motswako Soul artist Melo the SoulSista, real name Tumelo Tshetlo, is finally releasing her debut single titled Thato on 31 January.

After collaborating with a number of popular Motswako artists and award winning Hip Hop muso Cassper Nyovest (of Gusheshe fame), she is now taking her leap of faith as a solo artist.

Her single titled Thato is a glamorous township tale of love. Melo’s music is what she would like to call Motswako Soul, a combination of Setswana and English lyrical poetry on a soulful-jazzy melody.

Her ability to play the piano while singing

adds a distinct touch and flavour that makes up the ‘Melo the SoulSista’ brand and image.

Born in Mafikeng, she is not only a singer, but also a pianist, entrepreneur, and songwriter. She was formerly known as only Soul Sista, but later combined Soul Sista with Melo to what she is now known as Melo the SoulSista.

While driving home in the afternoons I couldn’t help but notice a few dedicated students busy training, even before the reopening of school, on the track running at Marais Viljoen High School. I guess starting off early prepares you better, it gives you that extra edge over your competitors and sets you apart from the rest.

Remember you are a pro in the making,

when you’re in sport your name is already written in the history books. It’s entirely up to you to make that dream come true. Your destiny starts with you.

All that hard work you’re putting in now will bare you good fruit when you go head-tohead with your competitors, whether they’re from your school or part of an inter-school challenge. Your efforts include more than just practice on the field, with your mental strength, willingness to compete, and dedication determining whether you will make

the podium. If you want to collect medals, only hard work will make it possible for you.

Keep in mind that if better is possible, good is not enough.

Ensure that nothing distracts you from reaching your goals, when it’s time to focus on your academics shift your gear to academics mode and stay focused.

When you take to the field, sport mode.

It doesn’t matter if you’re taking part in track and field, hurdles, sprint, long jump, or high jump, it is you striving to be the best at it.

ndu@tametimes.co.za Two combinations of the Golden Lions took on the NWU-Pukke on Friday 24 January in a pre-season warm-up game.

The Lions emerged winners with a 52 – 14 final score.

The Lions, who will be participating in the 2014 Super Rugby competition, beginning on 15 February, used the warm-up game to test various forward and backline combinations. NWU-Pukke faced two completely different Lions teams over the first and second halves of the game. Lions coach Ackermann changed his entire first half backline at the beginning of the second half, and gradually substituted his forwards in a bid to give players some game time and to test player combinations.

Although the Lions played without many of their big name players, it only took three minutes for the Johannesburg side to cross the Pukke defence for their first of eight tries. Springbok Sevens takes third Las Vegas title

The Springbok Sevens side successfully defended their Las Vegas title over the weekend. The Blitzbokke’s successful campaign earned the South African side their third Las Vegas title in four years.

Going into the fourth round of the HSBC Sevens World Series, which was hosted at the San Boyd Stadium in Nevada (USA), South Africa (56 points) was second on the log, just behind New Zealand who were sitting on 58 points.

The Blitzbokke began their successful defence strongly as they made light of all their competition during the preliminary stages of the Vegas tournament. South Africa won all their pool A fixtures, which were matches against Wales, Canada and Kenya.

South Africa then progressed through the quarterfinals after convincingly beating Argentina 36 – 0. At this point the Springboks had already exceeded the expectations of their captain, Kyle Brown, who stated that a finish in the top four would help the Blitzbokke keep up to the World Series leaders.

Samoa was the next side to fall at the hands of the South Africans when they lost 14 – 0 in the semi-final fixture, which took place

in the early hours of Sunday morning (local time).

Later on Sunday, South Africa met up with New Zealand in the final game on the USA leg of the World Series.

The Springboks won the game 14 – 7 and by that not only successfully defended their title, but also managed to top the log having a one point advantage over New Zealand.

The next stage of the HSBC Sevens World Series will take place on 7 – 8 February and will be hosted at the Westpac Stadium in New Zealand.

By Craig Norris You ask yourself, where to now for Smith, De Villers and co, after the premature retirement of Jacques Kallis? Which I’m sure took everyone by surprise.

It had to come at some stage, but not right now with the Aussies taking on the Proteas in a three match test series soon. I honestly thought that Kallis had another couple of years left in him at this level, in which he could have tried to break Tendulkar’s record of the most test match centuries.

His stats show what a cricketing great he actually was; and that he is probably the best all-rounder the game has ever seen.

A very private person, Kallis went about his business in quiet fashion and then the announcement we all dreaded.

I recall what a nightmare start he had to his test career. He could not buy a run, but he repaid the selectors for having the faith to persist with him. It certainly paid off, but the current Proteas men will have to very quickly fill the void Kallis has left, if they want to remain the number one test team in the world.

At the moment, the Aussies are on a high after crushing England in the Ashes Series, as well as winning the ODI Series on last Sunday. Michael Clarke and coach Darren Leeman have set a goal for the Aussies to become the number one Test and ODI team in the world within the next couple of years.

It will take some doing, as a number of the current squad members are on the wrong side of thirty. A pity no Kallis, but we must move on and hopefully we can tame Clarke and co. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel are key for me in this contest, as they will need to take wickets early in the innings and bowl the Aussies out cheaply.

It’s a task England could not perform, as they allowed Australia to set huge totals, as well as England’s batting letting them down. Our top order batsmen will hopefully not be intimidated by Mitchell Johnson, who certainly got up the noses of Alistair Cook’s men. Johnson not only bowled very quickly at the English, but was also seen to be quite verbal.
