CONGRATULATIONS: Lisa Nunes with her Best Overall Achiever trophy and Principal Minnie with the trophy for the Top School in the District. Lisa Nunes from Alberton High thought that her seven distinctions at the end of matric were as good as it gets. What she didn’t anticipate was that her academic achievement would also place her at the top of all the 2013 matriculants in Ekurhuleni. Lisa is currently the best overall performer in Ekurhuleni with a final matric average of 94.4%. On Wednesday 29 January the top three matriculants in Ekurhuleni for 2013 were invited to attend a prestigious function held at Emperors Palace, where they received their awards: full bursaries and laptops. Their bursaries were awarded by the Ekurhuleni mayor, Mondli Gungubele, in person. “I didn’t even expect it. When I got there I didn’t realise I was top until I saw my name on the programme next to Best Overall Performer,” Nunes explained. “It was overwhelming.” Nunes managed to get distinctions for all of her subjects. Getting seven distinctions was Nunes’ main goal, and even though she achieved it, it was no walk in the park. Nunes was head

girl at Alberton High, which put much more pressure on her to achieve her academic targets, as she had to fulfil her duties around the school as well. “Matric made every day a challenge with very late nights and early mornings. It was often a struggle to have all my work up-to-date, whether it was my school work or work related to my duties at school. There were many times that I just wanted to give up or present mediocre work or efforts opposed to giving 100% of myself. I am however pleased that I never gave up that challenge,” Nunes explained. According to Mr Matt Minnie, Principal of Alberton High School, Nunes has always been all-rounded and a top achiever, “She is very dynamic, she took part in various activities. She achieved from grade eight onwards, but never did we ever think she would win this title. We knew she would do well, but she absolutely excelled. So we’re in the seventh heaven with her achievement,” Mr Minnie said delighted. This is the first time in Alberton High’s history that a learner from Alberton High School is awarded with
this prestigious and much sought-after title. Alberton High School’s class of 2013 also landed the school the title as the top school in the district. The last time the school attained this title was in 2010, and Mr Minnie is very proud of all the students and especially his staff. “I’m lucky to have this fantastic staff,” he says satisfied. Nunes has been accepted into medicine at Wits University this year and she is very eager to start her studies. She feels that medicine is a way for her to make a difference in people’s lives, “I really like helping people. To me, it is not about the money, the title or the white coat. Medicine is a way of helping people in a way that they can’t help themselves,” she explained. For Nunes, her matric year has definitely been the most difficult, but most rewarding year of her life thus far. She advises the class of 2014 to work hard from day one and not to wait for due dates. But above all, she advises the matrics of 2014 to enjoy the last year of their school journey.

A note from the Editor Going on about planning for the entire month of January, the previous week has, in my view, shown us the danger of decisions taken outside of a plan. Before last week Tuesday, Mamphela represented credibility and was the custodian of the hope for change, this week that reputation is absolutely tarnished. What is the moral here? Spend a little more time planning and, once that has been done, do all in your power to keep to that roadmap. By Ndu Ngwenya This week we would like to congratulate Alberton High School and Lisa Nunes for the achievement of Best Overall Achiever and Top School in the District. We wish the school all the best with all future plans, and Lisa we wish you all the best with your studies. Exciting news for our female readers - it’s the month of love and we are giving away a date with John Owens (Mr South Africa). See our competition page for details on how you can win. Don’t forget to share your news with us at www.tametimes.co.za, as a citizen journalist, and also put yourself in line to win.

CJ Fuchs-industriële ontwikkeling (vervolg) Dr Daan Grobler and Yvonne Grobler
asook Electrolux huishoudelike elektriese apparate vervaardig. (From: Home Is Where The Town Is, Supplement to Alberton Record, 27 January 2005 and www.fuchsfoundation. co.za/history.htm.) Councillor Estelle Visser has added her voice to the four-year-long and still pending projects where open trenches, puddles, dilapidated walls and exposed servitude pipes have become the subject of an annoyance to residents of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns. Throughout the year 2013, and especially towards the last quarter, Clr Visser was prompted to find some real answers regarding the long-stretching project. What she did discover was that Rand Water was in the process of appointing a new contractor to complete the half done project. Through communication with the water board the councillor was assured that a contractor would be appointed by 30 November 2013, a date which was later changed to 30 January 2014.
“I dealt with a very efficient young man from Ekurhuleni, who made it his burden to locate the relevant department and I’d like to thank him for his tireless work,” said Clr Visser. She added that she would maintain communications with Rand Water to ensure that residents can once again feel safe and return to enjoying their parks. On 30 January tame TIMES sent out a communication enquiring, among other things, if a contractor has been appointed and when residents could expect work to commence. At the time of going to print no response was received. We will none the less continue to follow up on this issue until such a time that the smoke has been cleared. When it comes to heart attacks ‘forewarned is forearmed’
Every year thousands of South Africans fall victim to a heart attack – but what exactly is a heart attack, what are the symptoms and what should you do when one suddenly strikes? A heart attack happens when there is a narrowing of the heart arteries or a blood clot cuts off the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the
heart muscle. Despite the high number of deaths caused by heart attacks, the good news is that if you act quickly enough at the first sign of a heart attack, you could save your life and limit damage to your heart. Heart attacks are generally caused by coronary heart disease (CHD), a condition
You should familiarise yourself with the hospitals in your area that have the most appropriate facilities to deal with heart attack, or any other medical emergency, for that matter. Seeking assistance at the most appropriate medical facility should result in early treatment, better outcomes, time saving, cost saving and above all, saving a life. You should also have emergency assist contact numbers readily available should a medical emergency occur. The recently launched, Netcare Assist app, which can be downloaded for free from Apple’s App Store South Africa, Blackberry App World (for devices older than Blackberry10 handsets) and the Android Market, also offers an invaluable lifeline for any person caught in an emergency situation. Netcare Union Hospital offers a range of cardiac services. The cardiothoracic unit at Netcare Union Hospital comprises of a 15bed dedicated cardiac intensive care unit, two catheterisation laboratories, as well as a cardiac surgery department with a dedicated cardiac theatre. The unit offers the full spectrum of interventional cardiology, performed under the guidance of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists. These include coronary angiogram, coronary angioplasty, coronary stenting, 3D echocardiography, rotational arthectomy, intra-vascular ultrasound and transcatheter aorticvalve implantation (TAVI).
A heart attack often starts with mild symptoms that may not be particularly painful. Many people experience a tightness or squeezing sensation in the chest. It is important to get emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms for two minutes or more: •
Pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the centre of the chest.
•
Chest pain moving outwards to the neck, shoulder(s) or arm(s).
•
Severe pain, sudden weakness, dizziness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath.
Symptoms may vary from person to person and may even differ from men to women. Women don’t always get the same classic heart attack symptoms as men and many often mistake these symptoms for other health conditions. For example, some women experience pain in their arms, back, neck or jaw. They may also suffer from stomach pain and fatigue.
What can you do to prevent a heart attack? “Smoking, eating a diet that is high in fat and cholesterol, not exercising as well as being overweight or obese all increase your chances of getting coronary heart disease or suffering a heart attack. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and making healthy choices you can decrease your chances of having a heart attack drastically,” says Dr Mamdoo. According to Resa van der Merwe, hospital general manager at Netcare Union Hospital, we all need to take responsibility for protecting our heart’s health. “Don’t wait for the consequences of your lifestyle choices to impact your health negatively. Start choosing the healthier lifestyle today,” she notes. “In the event of a heart attack be sure to keep three important points in mind. Recognise the symptoms of a heart attack, call for help immediately and get to the most appropriate hospital promptly,” encourages Van der Merwe.

where the coronary arteries (the major blood vessels that supply the heart with blood) become blocked with deposits of cholesterol, known as plaques. During a heart attack one of these plaques bursts, causing a blood clot to develop which then blocks the supply of blood running through the coronary artery, thereby triggering a heart attack. The first hour after the onset of a heart attack is called the ‘golden hour’, which is a critical time as the heart muscle starts to die within 80 to 90 minutes after it stops getting blood. It takes about six hours for the affected areas of the heart to have irreversible damage. Most deaths and cardiac arrests happen during this period. According to Dr Farouk Mamdoo, a cardiologist at Netcare Union Hospital, “most people tend to ignore the symptoms of a heart attack until it is too late because of fear of embarrassment or a false belief that the problem is related to reflux.” However if the symptoms are correctly identified and appropriate medical care is received quickly within this period, nearcomplete recovery could be expected.

CPF Crime Prevention Tips
Crime against children 2 Teach children from a young age that crime is a reality. Talk to your child every day and take time to really listen and observe. Learn as many details as you can about your child’s activities and feelings. Encourage him or her to share concerns and problems with you. Let your children know that they can tell you anything and that you’ll be supportive. Remember, a stranger is anyone you and your parents don’t now or don’t know well.
Have your child ask for a secret password if someone unfamiliar tries to pick them up. Teach your children common-sense rules that can help them keep safe and build the self-confidence they need to handle emergencies. When reporting a missing child, you need a clear, recent photograph and all basic information about the child. Remember the Golden Rule: Strong families = Strong children

Response to Tannie Trixie Anonymous reader writes:
I would like to raise my concerns, as these days our kids can do what they want and when you give them a hiding, like the Bible says, then you are the one in hot water. Kids can kill their families due to the fact that discipline is not implemented. Look at how kids speak to their parents and the parents can’t do anything about it. Court cases are even opened because the parents gave their child a hiding, like in the old days. Why can’t the law allow a parent to correct
their children? In my opinion, it will make the world a better place and respect for mankind could be saved, perhaps. I am who I am because I got a good spanking when I was out of line. Schools need to teach respect and should stop teaching children about sex in schools and teach them about the Word of God and what the Bible teaches us. The right way of living. Only then, I think, this land will change and every person will repent and turn from their wicked ways.
Consider the cat Sadly cats rarely do well in shelters and the adoption rate for cats is very low. They are sadly misunderstood but are wonderful companions. They love to boss their owners around, train them to meet their demands and coach them to ensure they get the care, attention and affection they feel is their right. Generally, cats need less attention than dogs in that they’ll sleep between 14 and 18 hours a day. A cat is a long term commitment – that cute little kitten will grow up into a cat and can live for 15 years or more. The most important thing about owning a cat is ensuring it’s been sterilised. A cat with her mate and kittens can, in six years, produce 420 000 kittens. Female cats are called Queens while male cats are called Toms. A male cat will mark virtually every surface they can back up against, roam and get into savage cat fights if allowed
out. Unsterilized females can come into heat as often as every other month for eight to ten days and yowl loudly during this time to let you and the neighbourhood cats know it. Adopt a cat today and you won’t regret it! To adopt a cat from Alberton SPCA costs R300 and includes sterilisation, vaccinations and deworming. A microchip costs an additional R200 if required. Call 011 907 1568 for more details or come and visit our cattery and see what beauties we have needing homes.

Daar is ‘n leuse in die Grootboek wat sê, “Spare the rod and spoil the child!”
Pak slae is wreed!” Pak slae is wreed?

Recognition was eventually given to the fact that children, from babies right through to adolescents, did indeed experience depression
Depression (3) For many years depression under children and adolescents was not recognised. This could be attributed to various factors, such as adults perceiving childhood to be a carefree and fun phase of life and therefore dismissing any symptoms of depression or misinterpreting symptoms of depression as expressions that is part of the current developmental stage of the adolescent. As recognition was eventually given to the
fact that children, from babies right through to adolescents, did indeed experience depression, it was also recognised that the symptoms manifested differently, not only in comparison to adults, but also depending on the developmental stage the child was in. Please consult a psychlogist if you suspect your child suffers from depression. Jahwe Rapha Councelling centre can be contacted on 082 495 8401

READY TO EDUCATE: Impak’s National Sales and Marketing Manager, Pierre Kilian, handing over the newly-adapted study material for 2014 to the Alberton Study Centre owner Gerda du Plessis. The Alberton Study Centre started as a home schooling support facility about nine years ago. Gerda du Plessis, owner and manager of the centre, started giving extra lessons to home schooling learners from her home, and eventually this learning aid initiative grew enough so that she could open the Alberton Study Centre. Since its beginning, many successful and grateful individuals have passed through its doors. According to Du Plessis, study centres such as these are ideal for learners who have very strict and demanding calendars, due to

their professional hobbies or extra-curricular activities, and need a study timetable that fits into their lives. Professional BMX riders, surfers, dancers and models have matriculated through the centre and are leading very successful lives. At the moment there are about 40 learners at the centre, from grade 3 level to matric, and for Du Plessis this is ideal as each learner gets individual attention. Many children who feel that they do not fit in at big schools, due to medical conditions, psychological factors or bullying, for example, get home schooled and feel that the centre caters for their individual educational needs. In addition, the students write accredited exams here and they are tutored by qualified facilitators. The Alberton Study Centre forms part of Impak, a home and academic centre education system. On Thursday 30 January, Impak visited the Alberton Study Centre to supply them with newly-adapted academic material for the year that is aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Standards (CAPS) as prescribed by the National Department of Education. Du Plessis is very proud of the centre’s progression and excited about their new study material and the year ahead. “To see a light sparkle in a child’s eyes when they say “Ah, I’ve got it!’ is what it’s all about,” says Du Plessis. “I believe that every child here is a God-send.”

Community assistance leads to arrests SA’s criminals: Const Teffo and Const Moremi and the suspect. On 21 January, Const Teffo and Const Moremi of Germiston SAPS were asked by their commander to help an individual to collect his clothes from his place of employment as they would not allow him in. The two members then escorted the man, unaware of what happened. On the way they asked him for the address, and realised that it was that of a house that suffered a breaking. The officers interviewed him further and he told them he was a security guard at that house and that he had stolen the safes from the house and sold them at a scrapyard in Alberton. He was dismissed and not allowed back in the house to take his clothes, and that is why he called the police for help. He was then asked to take them to the said scrapyard and the safes were recovered. A firearm and a gun were found inside the safes. He was then arrested and charged for the crimes at Alberton SAPS.

No rest for EMPD law enforcer On Thursday afternoon, 30 January, at 15:50 an off duty Metro Police Officer of the Ekurhuleni K9 unit was taking a deserved afternoon nap before working night shift at Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park. His restful sleep was interrupted by his dogs barking outside. As the officer looked outside to investigate the reason for his dogs barking, his neighbour’s house alarm was activated almost immediately. The next moment an unknown male jumped out of his neighbour’s yard. The metro police
officer confronted the suspect in the street and requested the assistance of the public to help him. Mamphela: in out in OUT My Head Voice: Time for What happens now change: SA Dear Dr Mamphela, don’t we usually wait a little longer for the floor crossing antics?
The facts to me were that the ANC were after freedom and fairness and I agreed with that idea, even as a young child.
Citizen journalist, Melody Donovan writes: The other night I took out my party paraphernalia, whistles, balloons and party blowers. What was there to celebrate on an ordinary Wednesday night? A news broadcast. Doctor Mamphele Ramphele announced she was joining up with the DA in its presidential council and something in me was ecstatic. I listened carefully to her speech and as she spoke I could hear nothing she said was laced with a bunch of false promises. Her words clearly showed that the woman was wise and mature, that she was from the same heart as our late and great Mr Nelson Mandela. It was so obvious to me that what she was saying was first and foremost intelligent and she knew that the folk of our land had become unhappy, downtrodden and tense with the way things had been run. For me, a mature South African that lived through the apartheid era and the changes from 1994, it was elation; at last things would become great for all the people of SA. All through the sixties and seventies I had watched the horrors connected to apartheid mannerisms and as a young adult been subjected to government suppression. One could say that I was an activist of sorts back then and a supporter of the ANC party and its desires. The facts to me were that the ANC were after freedom and fairness and I agreed with that idea, even as a young child. Mr Mandela fought for what was right, but it was short lived. Along came others to take over and if one looks today at the quality of life for most SA people it still has not really happened to the fullest. Think about how much each and every one of us are badly affected by every rape, criminal acts, the sick and dying children in rural areas subjected to poor sanitation and inadequate water. This living experience is not life and certainly not freedom. It is fear, stress and suffering. It is definitely time for change and people with great hearts and minds to join together and take a stand on behalf of the country’s people and put things right for all in one strong fighting party. We need Doctor Ramphele and others like her with the Mandela belief of a great South Africa. I say let them come and stand firm. Give us back clean good hospitals that are well stocked and run. Give every one of our children a good education, encouragement and something to purpose towards. It has been 20 years of waiting and waiting and the stress has gotten to us all. We are still a suppressed nation living in our land and it has to stop! The time for true freedom is right now.
INDECISION: Mamphela Ramphela and the DA’s political confusion ends in ultimatum. “I know Mamphela as a principled, fiercely determined person who loves her country deeply and devotes her life to the cause of making democracy work,” said DA leader Helen Zille during a media briefing on Tuesday 28 January. The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced that they had approached Dr Mamphela with an invitation to stand as the party’s presidential candidate during the 2014 elections. The AGANG leader accepted the invitation stating that both organisations were to put together their strengths and their reach to take full advantage of this historic moment. The move by the DA and AGANG comes at a critical point in South Africa while all parties prepare their election efforts. A couple of weeks back EFF leader Julius Malema and IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi smoked
the proverbial peace-pipe in a move which resulted in the two leaders agreeing to allow campaigning in strongholds without any interferences. The marriage however failed to last a week due to much indecision mostly on the part of Mamphela and AGANG SA. Reports of a party ignorant about the a Tuesday announcement hit social media networks and news reports almost immediately after the announcement of the DA presidential candidate. As of Sunday 2 February, the miscommunication between the leaders had succeeded in causing futher confusion. The leaders who were singing each others praises began this week as estranged lovers, with Hellen stating that Mamphela cannot be trusted to see decisions to completion.
COPE welcomes the consolidation of opposition parties The President of Congress of the People (COPE), Mosiuoa Lekota, has welcomed the forthcoming merger of Agang SA and the Democratic Alliance. Lekota said that COPE has for some time advocated a closer working relationship between all opposition political parties. “Soon after the formation of COPE, we were right at the forefront of reorganising opposition politics to make sure that we do not work against each other, but rather with each other, especially on areas where there is clear agreement,” Lekota said. “We have recently taken this commitment a step further with the establishment of the Collective for Democracy, where the African
Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) agreed to co-operate on 20 areas where the parties have taken a similar position,” Lekota said. He added that COPE welcomes every move that strengthens the opposition and promises a change in government. As the late Nelson Mandela had envisaged, the realignment of South African politics has begun in earnest. “This development (merger) is good for South Africa, and will go a long way in promoting multi-party democracy with a robust opposition and change of ineffective government,” Lekota closed.

Agang SA members feeling betrayed, DA members feeling optimistic ahead of the elections, ANC insulting the ability of black people to make anti-ANC decisions without being coaxed, these are just a few happenings for the week. Happenings which leave one question on the lips of many South Africans; what happens to Agang SA now? Well, knowing a bit about the campaigning process I can guess a few possibilities likely to happen. Firstly, because Mamphele’s face will be next to the DA logo on our coming ballot, I think it’s safe to assume that Tannie Hellen and the campaigns team at the DA will be parading their new find all over the country. If this happens then I’m sure you would understand how Agang’s parades would be compromised, unless they also find themselves a new face to parade... I’m sure Lindiwe Mazibuko would appreciate the position. By the way, just as a side thought in the form of an open question: Dear Dr Mamphela, don’t we usually wait a little longer for the floor crossing antics? Back to the issue at hand - in the second scenario, Dr Mamphela gracefully gets off the fence she’s currently sitting on. A vocal advocate for morals and fairness, Mamphela must realize the depth of the situation her decision places on all the volunteers, leaders and followers of the brand ‘Agang SA’. These people, whom she fondly refers to as ‘citizens’ (reminds me of Lady Gaga and her ‘little monsters’), proudly wore the rainbow wheel because they believed in the ideals she presented and the hope she embodies. In my second scenario she does the noble thing, she steps down. This move may help the citizens rebuild, they already do not have enough time to salvage the already sinking boat. The next possibility, and by now I’m sure you realise the escalation of the drama, the citizens push Dr Mamphela off the fence. I must admit Agang is a unique party leadership problem. We all have come to know leadership issues are inevitable within new parties; EFF’s Malema vs Kunene, COPE’s Lekota vs Shilowa, and if anyone knows the name of Kunene’s new party kindly send it to me so I can also watch their looming squabble. Agang’s struggle though is a ‘Party vs Leader’ problem and my feeling is that if she won’t take the step, then the structures with in the fledgling party must expel her. In the last and most dramatic scenario, the volunteers, leaders, followers and Mamphela realise that Agang is not growing as quickly as it should be and call it a day. In my opinion, though harsh, this option actually makes real sense if you consider that some analysts have gone as far as calling Agang SA a stillborn. Folks, this is the excitement of pre-election party politics and the 2014 elections are already promising to be interesting. I was serious about King Kenny Kunene’s party, what is it called? Taking a stand against e-tolls Even dogs are
against e-tolls The JOY Dogs joined the e-toll protest on 25 January, which started in Wemmer pan. There was a great turnout of bikers and cars and the JOY Dogs were welcomed in the protest. However, even though the focus was on the e-tolls, protesters still wanted a picture with these beautiful dogs.
Hundreds of bikers protesting against e-tolls
The sticker many cars displayed in their windows “proudly e-tag free” On Saturday 25 January hundreds of bikers and vehicles in Johannesburg South protested against the e-toll system. The protestors gathered at the Portuguese Hall, situated on the corner of Wemmer Pan and Victoria Road, and made their way onto the highway from the Comaro on-ramp.
Many bikers covered or even removed their number plates in protest against the e-toll system. Other protestors had their vehicle hazard lights on and displayed “proudly e-tag free” stickers in their windows. The protestors continued north towards Pretoria, passing through all the gantries. The SAPS and Metro Police also followed the strike and lead the protestors from the beginning to the end of the route. Various online invitations advertising the strike appeared on social media, such as Facebook, and internet sites a few days before and up until the strike. “Take a stand against this corrupt and unjust system,” and “highway robbery” were among the verbal protests posted on many of these pages.
Why I’m not getting tagged? Mondli Magwaza writes Why I’m not getting tagged? Simple, because the road belongs to me and I have already overpaid for it. In the 2013 budget speech, R32.9 billion was allocated to SANRAL for road improvements, which came from taxes collected from me and you. A little more than R2 comes off every liter of petrol I fill in my car; this produces over R40 billion rand per annum in revenue and is specifically for infrastructure development, also known as my roads. I also pay my vehicle license fees annually, from which the Gauteng transport department rises well over R2 billion per annum. Let’s roll back to a stone left unturned. In 2006, SANRAL undertook the so-called Gauteng Freeway Upgrade Project, estimated at R6 billion, which 5 years later ended up costing me and you over R20 billion. This equates to over R100 million per kilometer, which by the way was actually a few centimeters resurfacing of existing roads. Competition Commission’s investigation proved that the society was over-charged for all the work, but the investigation was called off just as it was close to pointing fingers on the individuals that benefited from these exaggerated costs What’s e-Tolling? In 2009. Electronic Tolling Company was awarded a R10.1 billion tender to extract money from Gauteng motorists through e-Tolling, ETC by the way is 85% owned by a European company KAPSCH, which publicly announced that they will earn R670 million per annum from the e-toll system. Take a moment to imagine the amount of schools, clinics, and of course roads (hello) that could have been built with all this money. The fuel levy mechanism on the other side goes straight to developing our roads. If this was really about the roads, the Treasury
would have added a mere 9c to the fuel levy from 2006. By now they would have accumulated more than R 7 billion, more than enough to keep our roads at the international standard that we are used to (the freeways are there, let’s give it to them), while maintaining SANRAL’s credit rating and keeping them focused on building roads and us, the tax payers, on working to build South Africa to what it could become. This is not some national road in Malawi! Our head of state with his reasoning poses a question, “Why should the whole of South Africa pay for Gauteng roads?” Well Mr President, excuse me for thinking like an African, but Gauteng roads are South African roads. The entire country benefits from us driving around them every day to work our butts off to be able to contribute 41%, i.e. R 400 billion, of South Africa’s social tax revenue. Yet, in return, Gauteng only receives 10% from the national budget. It only makes sense, Mr President, that a country benefiting so much from Gauteng’s economic activities contribute in making sure that its citizens have the roads to continue doing their business. I am an African. I then conclude that this harsh and painful “thank you” the ruling party is giving to its voters for affording it the majority that it enjoys in parliament. I see my beloved South Africa as a golden goose, with a potential of laying unlimited golden eggs for the benefit of us and generations to come, but greedy and impertinent mechanisms are being applied to reach into its guts and pull the egg from it leading it to a slow and painful death. The propaganda is tricking you into believing that the streets are not yours. I refuse to be naïve.

Bridge the gap
04 February 2014
Young boys paid to steal dogs for dog fighting Citizen journalist Melody Donovan writes:
See these and more pictures at www.tametimes.co.za So many notable things have happened in our country since 2009; Manto Tshabalala passed away (2009), we hosted a successful FIFA World Cup (2010), we denied Dali Lama entrance into the country (2011), Oscar Pistorius became the first amputee to compete at the Olympics (2012), Marikana (2012), we lost the father of the nation, Nelson Mandela (2014). Yet today, five years since its section was dislodged by a truck, the pedestrian bridge above Swartkoppies remains the one thing many Albertonians wish had been affected by change. As a former Kenton Primary School learner, I have some fond memories of how, after school, my friends and I would quickly dash across the bridge to visit friends who lived in Jackson Street while waiting for our parents to pick us up. I have memories of crossing the bridge during school fund raising efforts, a night walk and many other occasions. Today I look at the bridge and ask myself how
do current students not only of Kenton, but Glenview, Dinamika, and even up to Bracken High School cross over Swartkoppies. I ask myself, how residents are affected by the current stateof the bridge. Can we even call it a bridge? Whatever the answers may be, I, over the past week, decided to visit this monument of failure. What I realised was that as it stands it is now a den for thieves and frankly a major horror waiting to happen. All around its dark corners evidence of crime and drug use can be observed and unsightly graffiti now almost covers the entire Holzgen Street side of the bridge. Will it take the death of a child or maybe a drug related murder to wake us up? I ask this because as things are, we are slowly allowing ourselves to fall asleep. Ask yourself when last you were in a council meeting, and when last your mutterings actually fell on ears which can and should bridge the gap?
Alberton Child Welfare: A safe haven for children Alberton Child Welfare is a non-profit organization (NGO) that specialises in the protection of children. It started in 1940 as a charity initiative run by volunteer social workers, and in 1966 it was endorsed by the National Social Development Department as an accredited NGO. Last year the centre assisted 1000 children from various family backgrounds, such as homes afflicted by sexual abuse, family violence, neglect or are orphans, to find safer homes. This year they wish to continue helping families, but with the help of the community. Alberton Child Welfare is a temporary home for children between the ages of one and 12, who come from broken homes. The centre’s aim is early intervention into hostile family environments, where they temporarily remove the children and, with a court instruction, return them once the parent or guardian has agreed to improve the circumstances at home. In some cases, however, the perpetrator is in the family and the child or the perpetrator has to be removed permanently. According to the Director at Alberton Child Welfare, Elmarie Kennedy, many of their children therefore need to be placed in foster care, but foster
homes are often fully occupied and the centre cannot accommodate more than 20 children conveniently at a time. According to Kennedy, the solution is to find a larger facility that can accommodate more children during this transition period. Currently, the centre has a property in Thokoza that is big enough, but it needs to be upgraded and renovated. The windows and the roof need to be repaired, the doors need to be replaced and certain areas on the property need to be paved evenly, as there are currently uneven, cracked areas that are danger hazards for little ones. Kennedy kindly asks that if there is anyone that knows a landscaper that might be willing to help them with the property, it will be greatly appreciated. They are also always grateful for donations in the form of nappies, baby formula, school bags or school stationery, or even tin food to store. If there is anyone who is interested in helping Alberton Child Welfare to materialise their goals, or who would like to make a donation, contact the centre on 011 907 3004/5 for more information. There are many children out there who can benefit greatly from even just a single donation; every little bit helps.
I was watering my garden one afternoon around three and I noticed a young child dragging a medium sized dog by his two front feet. The dog was panting furiously and was obviously very anxious. I was just about to call out to the boy through the gate when a young man in a Polo vehicle stopped and began speaking to him through the window. The man looked at me and so I asked him politely if I can help in any way. Turns out that the youngster, after being questioned by the man, who spoke his language, told that he was given the dog by a school friend and needed a lift to his home in Natalspruit with the dog. Both of us were immediately suspicious of the boy’s story because the dog had no lead or collar and was being taken against his will. It was not long and two older boys came walking down the road and the young boy quickly told the man that he was running away from them because they wanted to steal his dog for themselves. It took a lot of cajoling, both soft and harsh talk to get the truth out of these three youngsters and when a policeman joined in and took out arresting ties they opened up in total fear. The horror of the truth of this story is both shocking and astounding. The three boys had left Natalspruit after school with the definite intention of stealing a dog. Could be a young pit bull, staffie or even a soft young pup of any breed, they were not fussy. What happens is that they apparently are paid sometimes up to R50 for a dog, and if it is a pit bull or staffie it is trained in a dog ring for fighting. Other pups are used as bait dogs to excite killer breeds. Horrible to hear this fact, but they take these stolen dogs, of which some are not fit for
fighting, out of people’s gardens to their area. Too many of them are skinned alive and dripping blood and flesh and are thrown into a ring of two fighting dogs as bait. Apparently this action gives the fighter dogs more confidence to kill easily. I was so shocked I could no longer speak. Close to tears at the thought of what goes on in some community’s and how easily R50 could be the prize money to encourage such criminal activity in youngsters. All the boys were younger than twelve and the one dragging the dog was around eight years old. The boys readily admitted all of this to us and said that it was usually easy to steal a young dog who would come to the gate to play with them, sometimes for a tennis ball. If the gate was still locked it was harder to get to the dog, but with three of them together it is worth trying if it meant getting paid money for the dog. The particular dog on that day was a young pit bull and friendly enough, and after they admitted the theft they showed the policeman the house where they had gotten the dog. The owner came down the road and reclaimed his pet. Dog theft is a terrible fact taking place every day in our society. Our expensive and beloved pets, which we are expecting to live with us for many years still, are stolen from our property and can end up in the most horrible of situations. The only thing I can urge each and every home owner is be on guard. It is happening all over and it is terrible, so do not let your young pups be too visible to the outside and especially when they are very young, or until they are old enough to guard the gate and bite if they have to.
Do you want your healthy glow back
Since I was a small girl I wanted to become a Beauty Therapist. I loved everything that had to do with beauty treatments and helping others. After school there were a few obstacles so that I could not follow my dream immediately. I first studied Marketing and Business in Stellenbosch and then went on a two year working holiday visa to the UK. That was the most awesome time in my life and prepared me for life back in South Africa. This also gave me the opportunity to travel through the UK and Europe. With the money I saved in the UK it was possible to start my studies in South Africa at the well-known Camelot International to become an International Aesthetician. I was so thrilled that at last I could work and live out my dream. I started my own salon in May 2004. In the last 10 years I gained valuable experience. It is a privilege to live out my passion and for this reason I personally
attend to each client. The salon is centrally situated in Raceview and boasts a number of added benefits, including secure parking right in front of the salon, tranquil one on one treatment spaces, scientifically proven award-winning and patented products and extended hours (Monday to Friday) to benefit working people. Grace Trinity’s first-borns
Front: Bronwyn Bentley and Calsea Harvey. Middle: Minenhle Ntshanyase, Shannon Aube, Shannon Beck, Tanur Sham, Donnae Nunan. Back: Jean Fowlds (coach) and Anton Stadler (only male teacher at Grace Trinity) The year 2014 is a very special year for Grace Trinity School for Girls, as they not only have their first class of matric students but their brother school Saint Declan’s has their first intake of five grade R boy learners, and by the end of February their athletics field will be operational. tame TIMES visited the school and caught up with the 2014 matrics during their Physical Education lesson. There are currently five grade 12 learners. All five girls said that it is exciting to be the first matrics, however they are feeling the pressure to set the standard for the rest of the matrics in the years to come. “But we are going to pull it off, we will get a 100% pass rate,” they all said in agreement. Principal Debbie Robertson told tame TIMES, “These girls are our ‘first-borns’; the ones that have led our school since their grade 9 year. They have had the responsibility of legacy placed on their shoulders, and they have truly carried that responsibility with grace and dignity. We are extremely proud of them; each and every one has grown into a confident and mature young lady. We wish them the absolute best year – the jewel in their crowns.” According to Robertson, many of the parents had been asking, since the opening of the girls’ school, whether there would be a school

for boys. “When my husband (Derrick) and I had our own son, it was something we could personally start envisioning. We always ask the question ‘What would be best for our own child?’ during the development process, so now the boys’ school is a reality for us.” St Declan’s is in the process of being built and they are already open to Grade R boys. In January 2015, grades 1-6 will be available. All academics and general school-running will be on different campuses. “We have an incredible principal lined up for St Declan’s who is itching to get started. The two schools will interact for some extra-murals, and of course for major school events such as school plays, fundraisers, matric farewells and the like. The focus will always be on monastic schooling, as we believe the best academic results are achieved this way,” Robertson said. The major ground works for the athletics field was completed last week, and the installation of irrigation and 12000 square metres of grass will start from next week. tame TIMES asked Robertson if they ever thought it would get to this great level of success in such a short space of time, when her and her husband started this school. She replied, “We shake our heads every day. We are truly blessed, and are so privileged to be on this incredible journey with God, our girls, and our parent body.”

Marais Viljoen High School held their annual grade eight concert at the school last week (27- 30 January). Each year the grade eights prepare a show for their parents, teachers and friends that the prefects put together and practice
with them on the grade eight camp. The concert is ideal for all the new learners entering high school to bond and to become part of the school’s traditions. The theme this year was ‘It’s a kind of magic’.

The non-governmental organization Karabo, situated in Brackenhurst, has offered support and assistance to many school children, teachers and parents over the years. They strive to create school environments where teachers and children feel supported, safe and happy and their new programme called Conscious Discipline enables them to do just that. The Conscious Discipline programme targets the education system at school and aims to create a positive climate that promotes optimal development of all children, staff and faculty. They use the method of brain stimulation exercises that teaches teachers how to understand and discipline children in a constructive way, and it develops the emotional intelligence of the child. The bigger purpose is to establish a positive connection between the teacher and the child, in order to create a safe learning environment where the child feels that he or she belongs somewhere- to the school family. According to Marjonneke de Bruyn, a play therapist at Karabo, this programme has been successfully implemented in the USA,

where it originated and where a decline in bullying, drug abuse and suicide has also been attributed to this programme. Karabo is busy launching this programme in South Africa now and they have arranged to start workshops at Montanus Primary, South Hills Primary and Alston Primary. Conscious Discipline also targets parents and teaches them in separate workshops how a child’s brain functions and how to discipline them in a constructive way, to ensure the optimal development of the child. They teach the parent how to deal with tantrums, for example, and where it comes from in order to solve the cause of the problem. Karabo uses practical and fun exercises, such as learning nursery rhymes, doing puppet shows and physical stretching and breathing exercises to teach the child assertiveness, self-control, how to process aggression, how to communicate their feelings in order to build self-worth and selfesteem. The child learns to self-regulate their behaviour and to connect with and care for others as a family. In addition, Karabo has trained community workers to offer counselling for vulnerable children who need to cope with loss. They have centres offering support for this in Katlehong, Thokoza and Eden Park as well. If you are interested in Conscious Discipline and would like to find out more about Karabo’s workshops or support groups, contact them on 079 322 7348 for more information. You can also help them change lives by making a donation to FNB, account number 62074012122, branch code 250942.

Investing in education Outstanding teachers
PROUD SMILES: Kgomotso Mtwazi from Magaliesburg State School and Sifiso Mbele from Esokwazi Secondary School receive a bursary check on behalf of the Gauteng 2013 matric top achievers. MEC Barbara Creecy and Gauteng Premier Ms Nomvula Mokonyane awarding them with the bursary cheque.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has allocated over R200 million towards tertiary education for learners from no-fee paying schools. The GDE has awarded 1125 university bursaries and 1600 FET (Further Education and Training) bursaries to Gauteng’s matric 2013 top achievers from no-fee paying schools. The official award ceremony took place on 27 January at Turffontein Race Course. The aim of the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) bursary scheme is to ensure that financial constraints do not hold learners from disadvantaged communities or households back from acquiring tertiary education. The GDE is proud to announce that over the last four years, they have been able to award bursaries directly to no-fee paying schools.
“If we want to break inequality, we must invest in our learners. Our responsibility does not end with grade 12,” said Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. The bursaries will fund the student’s degree or diploma for the whole duration of the course. However, it is up to the learner not to drop out or fail. The reality is that the GCRA bursary scheme cannot fund everyone who has fared well in matric. Mokonyane therefore asks that each bursary recipient makes the most of the financial support they are getting, as there are many other learners who are also deserving. MEC Barbara Creecy and Premier Mokonyane call on the community, and especially the private sector, to invest in learners who are unable to enrol for tertiary education because of their financial situation. “If you assist someone, it will benefit South Africa immensely and change lives,” said Creecy. According to Mokonyane, the GDE has partnered with the private sector to finance deserving students, but she feels that the business sector could do more to invest in education. “The government cannot provide internships; this is where we need the private sector to come forward. We have a database of graduates who can fill their positions,” explained Creecy. Mokonyane emphasised that education is not merely a government issue, but a national and local community responsibility as well, “Ordinary citizens with the ability, put a child through university to give back for what you have received. It takes a village to raise a child.”
The following Bracken High School teachers received outstanding teacher awards in their respective subject areas:

Owens is a 32-year-old native from Pretoria. He grew up in a very small town called Eikenhof, but moved to the Jacaranda city during his school years. He calls himself a late bloomer, having not had any interest in anything to do with modelling or fashion. Mr SA, John Owens has some refreshing views and opinions and is not afraid to air them. He wastes no time in setting the record straight about the stereotypical image that a Mr SA title holder is nothing more than an attractive underwear model. Owens is far more interested in the corporate side of things than modelling and has worked at the same private property trust, which develops holiday resorts all over Africa, for the past 12 years. It’s apparent that John not only loves what he does, but is also very good at it. For the past eight years he has been nominated as one of the company’s top five salespersons in Africa. His secret to success? “I am a people’s person. That is probably why I enjoy doing what I do to such an extent.” John started his voyage to becoming Mr SA a few years ago when he got a great opportunity to do a shoot for PhD Underwear. John says he was ‘bullied’ into taking part in Mr SA, but in the end it completely changed his life as he saw the opportunities such a title could create for a person. Before John won the Mr SA competition, tame TIMES spent a day with him and the other contestants at Gold Reef City where John said that he believed that the winner of Mr SA should really use the brand to create awareness, about not only the competition but also important issues and challenges in life. Mastering the black and red
Tsogo Sun once again has a new thrilling tournament running at thirteen casinos Roulette Masters. Media and celebrities got to experience the highs and lows of the game this past Thursday night in a decadent night of red and black extravagance at Back o’ the Moon at Gold Reef City Casino. It was Edith Venter who came out tops in the mini Roulette Master Tournament, either she gambles a lot and knows how to play the game or the glamorous life is just second nature to her. What is Roulette Masters all about? It is a first for the Tsogo group and is designed to inspire thrill-seekers to try their luck for the top prize of R1,7 million. The tournament started on 13 January and runs until 14 March, so you still have time to see if luck is on your side. The grand finals takes place on 29 March at Gold Reef City, where a minimum of R1.7 million in prize money and a guaranteed first prize of R1 million will be won. Every weekend for nine weeks, roulette heats will be held at the 13 Tsogo Sun casinos – where patrons will be able to buy-in to the tournament for R100 per entry. Qualifying rounds in the Roulette Masters will be played at each casino, with between one to five players constituting a heat. After buying in, each player receives chips and must play every spin. Players will be given three spins of 90 seconds each and at the end of three spins, the chips remaining will be totalled and scores will be entered onto the leader board. Players can enter as often as they like, especially if they don’t make the leader board or feel their present
score is too close to the qualification cut off level. At the end of the nine-week qualifying period, the player with the highest chip winnings from a single buy-in will automatically qualify for a seat in the casino finals and the next 20 players will play off for the remaining six seats in the casino finals.
NOTICE OF FINAL REVIEW OF THE BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED RAND WATER PALMIET TO KLIPFONTEIN O6 PIPELINE WITH ITS ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES, EKURHULENI METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY, GAUTENG PROVINCE NEAS Reference: DEA/EIA0001333/2012 DEA Reference: 14/12/16/3/3/1/626 Notice is hereby given of the joint public participation process and public review period in terms of: the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA); and the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) (NWA). Nemai Consulting have been appointed by Rand Water as independent environmental consultants to undertake a Basic Assessment Report for the proposed construction of O6 Pipeline which will extend from the Palmiet Pumping Station to Klipfontein covering an approximate distance of 25 kms, Ekurhuleni Municipality, Gauteng Province. The project forms part of a number of projects intended to augment the water supply to the Palmiet Pumping Station Supply System. The Palmiet Pumping Station provides water to the Meyersdal reservoir of Ekurhuleni through pumps at lower pressures than the Palmiet – Klipfontein system. Please note that this is the final review of the Basic Assessment Report (BAR). The BAR has been amended to include a second alternative which was not initially considered. This alternative includes tunnelling from Signal Hill to north of Gillooley’s intersection. This is necessary due to space constraints along the Van Buuren Road servitude and the possible impacts on the existing O2 Pipeline. Currently it is difficult to maintain O2 pipeline and there is no space for an additional pipeline. A large portion of the O2 is concrete pipeline so working too close to this will add to the risk during construction. The area within Van Buuren Road is well established and fully developed with existing underground infrastructure. Furthermore, Van Buuren is a busy road thus construction will cause large impact of traffic. All landowners affected by both alternatives will be notified of the public review of the BAR. Further, a forty (40) day review period has been provided to ensure all stakeholders have adequate time to comment on the proposed project. Public Participation A public meeting was held during the initial public review period. An additional public meeting will be scheduled if requested. All registered Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) will be notified of the date and venue. The Final Basic Assessment Report (BAR) and Water Use License Application (WULA) are available for review from 04 February 2014 to 17 March 2014 at the following locations: Venue Alberton Public Library, Alwyn Taljaard Avenue, Alberton Germiston Public Library, c/o Queen and Cross Street, Germiston

Baring Bryan Adams Johnny Clegg
Bryan Adams on his Bare Bones Tour. Bryan Adams walks on the stage dressed in all black with a top hat and takes his place with his acoustic guitar. This is what fans experienced this past weekend at the Big Top Arena at Carnival City. No fancy band or no show-stopping stage design, just Bryan Adams baring his musical soul and outstanding talent, occasionally accompanied by gifted pianist Gary Breit. And by all means this was more than enough, actually exceeding expectation. This Bare Bones Tour shows the Grammy
Award winning musician is all natural talent. This unplugged tour provides a rare opportunity for fans to enjoy Adams’ last three decades of music history with hits like Cuts Like a Knife, Summer of `69, Kids Wanna Rock, Can`t Stop This Thing We`ve Started, (Everything I Do) I Do It for You, Open Road and Thought I`d Seen Everything. Adams even sang a Kristofferson song, Help Me Make It through the Night, whom will also be playing at Big Top Arena on 22 March and interestingly enough both of them have sung a duet with Barbara Streisand. Adams shared this with the audience, telling them how he was sent the song ‘I Finally Found Someone’ by a producer and changed it as it ‘didn’t work for him’. A few weeks later Streisand phoned him and asked him why he changed her song. He replied, “Well are you going to put down the phone?”; Streisand said, “No, I like it.” This interaction with the audience gave fans a glimpse of the real Bryan Adams, reflecting his humorous personality. Adams’ status as one of the great songwriters of our time has been solidified with a Grammy Award, 18 Juno Awards and an American Music Award. He has also been nominated for three Academy Awards and five Golden Globes. This show was something amazing. Adams has to be one the best love songs writers and singers. His songs are every woman’s dream and his voice just adds to the already amazing song. Every song he sang was known to the audience, showing his huge success and popularity. Adams told Carnival City patrons, “Music is the closest thing to magic we will ever come across”; and that is true, his Bare Bones Tour was exactly that - magic.

at Emperors Arguably one of South Africa’s most prolific musicians, Johnny Clegg will soon return to Emperors Palace’s Theatre of Marcellus, for two shows on 7 and 9 February. Clegg will wow fans with a rare, unplugged performance. This is a very intimate show and will include storytelling by Clegg, where he will share details about his life and personal views of the political history of South Africa and abroad. The show is a personal journey, which is uplifting, moving and also humorous at times. With more than seven million albums sold worldwide, Clegg has wowed audiences through his live performances, including appearances with Nelson Mandela. The singer-songwriter has not only won a number of national awards, but also international awards for his music and outspoken views
about apartheid and migrant workers in the country. A dancer, anthropologist, academic, activist and French knight, Clegg has released two dozen albums, including the most recent, Human, in 2010. While all these tags are fitting, none of them can accurately describe the energetic, passionate artist, who has become one of South Africa’s greatest musical exports. Recently awarded three honorary doctorates, by Dartmouth College, CUNY and the University of the Witwatersrand, on Freedom Day in 2012, Clegg received the Presidential Ikhamanga Award as part of the National Orders ceremony. A National Order is the highest honour a South African citizen can receive for his/her contribution to the country.

Frozen gem at Ster-Kinekor
Eastgate Ster-Kinekor is showing the treasure of animated 3D movies now - Frozen, The Musical. Extravagant care was taken with the miniature. The technical perfection is remarkable and the small details make it beautiful. Every scene is mindbogglingly exquisite. One of my favourite parts was the stunning ice palace and watching it materialize brought me back to my childhood with its belief and beauty of magic. The atmosphere, architecture and organic richness is fascinating. It almost felt like it was a real piece of history and is worth seeing in 3D.

Wearing your heart on a badge
BADGE PROUD: Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve, wear it on a badge. Non-profit children’s organisation Cotlands kicks off its heartfelt campaign in the month of love – February. This new campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of emotional development in a child’s life, and how play helps to build the bond between parent/caregiver and child. Cotlands has created five unique badges that are fun and stylish to wear. Each badge sells for R5. All proceeds go to Cotlands, which provides early childhood development in under-resourced communities. “We hope that through this campaign we raise awareness for the importance of bonding between mother and child. We also aim to raise funds for our work with vulnerable children and their caregivers,”
said Cotlands CEO Jackie Schoeman. “This campaign is a wonderful way for us to share the love and spread the word that children need love to thrive in later life,” added Schoeman. The badges, that have the words: Play, Love, Laugh, Learn and Keep Calm, are a trendy way of publically displaying your support for children’s rights. Cotlands encourages schools and community groups to get behind the initiative and support children in need. To join the campaign you need to purchase your badge online. For purchases of R100 and over, delivery is free. To purchase a badge visit www.cotlands. org or contact Sharon Smith on 011 683 7201 sharon@cotlands.org.

Why Foodimals are good for you
Making offices a safer place
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouthwatering comedy left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood thought he saved the world when he destroyed his most infamous invention, a machine that turned water into food causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint soon learns that his invention survived and is now creating food animals – foodimals. Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world – again. The film opened in SA cinemas on 31 January. BANANOSTRICH - Yellow banana with ostrich legs added. • Bananas help your heart. • Bananas help your muscles move well. • Bananas help your stomach feel better when it’s sick. BARRY - The shy, young strawberry that befriends Flint and his friends upon their arrival on the transformed island of Swallow Falls. He’s a sweet little guy! They’re an excellent source of vitamin C and just 100g has a whole day’s supply. • The small seeds embedded in their skin providea good source of dietary fibre • They’re also a good source of folate (one of the B vitamins) • Their natural sweetness comes from the sugars fructose and glucose. BLUEBERRY - Barry’s smaller cousin. Blue and juicy! They provide you with some natural sugars for energy. The darker their colour, the sweeter they taste and the more of a treat they become. • They’re a good source of vitamin C • They provide dietary fibre, although they have less than blackberries. CARROT - Organic, orange, observant. Doesn’t have much to say. • They’re the reason why the whole family of brightly coloured compounds in foods were called carotenoids – they’re such a rich source, especially of beta carotene. Their bodies can convert beta carotene to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps with night vi- sion - that’s why children are told to eat carrots so they will be able to see in the dark! • With many vegetables cooking destroys some of their vitamins, but you can absorb more beta carotene from cooked carrots than from raw ones. If you prefer to eat carrots raw, that’s fine because even one carrot has two day’s supply of beta carotene. Baby carrots have even higher levels. • They’re sweetly delicious whether they’re old or young because they have some natural sugars, but younger carrots have more folate, one of the B vitamins which may help prevent birth defects in babies. • They’re a really good source of dietary fibre KIWI BIRD - The green fruit transformed into squat birds. They’re high in vitamin C, with 100g of kiwifruit having one and half times as much vitamin C as the same quantity of orange. • They’re also a good source of vitamin E. • You can’t see much fibre in their flesh, but their tiny black pips make them an excellent source of dietary fibre. SASQUASH - The legendary mountain-dwelling creature created from…squash. • It is an excellent source of vitamin C • It has some dietary fibre and potassium. • Squash that is darker in colour supply some beta carotene. TOMATO - Is just a tomato. They’re the richest source of lycopene, a carotenoid that scientists think could be important for the health of the prostate gland in men. The riper they are, the more lycopene they have. • They’re a good source of vitamin C (cherry tomatoes have even more vitamin C) and they supply some vitamin E, folate and dietary fibre. • Cherry tomatoes and those tomatoes that are deep red in colour are also a source of beta carotene. WATERMELOPHANT A pachyderm of the living summer fruit… with babies. • Vitamin C - helps your immune system. That’s the system that helps keep you from getting sick. • Vitamin A - makes your eyes strong. • Vitamin B6 - helps fight infections. • Vitamin B1 - helps your body use food for energy. • Lycopene - an antioxidant, may help prevent cancer.
04 February 2014
As from February 2014, Makrosafe will be offering a full Health and Safety Certificate course that has specifically been put together to cater for students with little or limited knowledge about health and safety principles. The course will silence any complaint about ‘not enough professionals being available’. The disconnect between graduates and the workplace is enormous. This year alone, thousands of South African graduates are expected to enter the job market. But only a few will be lucky enough to find an appropriate job. Those who struggle will do so for many reasons, but even the lucky ones will experience difficulty in adapting to the workplace. This is because few colleges and universities manage to adapt quickly enough to lecture to an ever-changing market and to release students that meet industry’s demands. The health and safety industry isn’t much different from other industries with talks about ‘insufficient capacity or lack of trained professionals’ doing the rounds continuously. To answer the need, Makrosafe will introduce a new certificate course from February this year. The Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course has been specifically designed to provide training to those with even only a very basic level of understanding of health and safety. When the course was designed, the objective was to put together a programme that would appeal to and cater for a ‘lay-man-
off-the-street’ and train him up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. The student should also be able to apply the learning in a practical manner. The course aims to achieve this by embedding knowledge and focusing more on the practical aspects to ensure the student can do the job, rather than aiming at seeing how well a person can memorise information provided and regurgitate that information on an examination paper. Once a student has completed the course, he or she will have the know-how and the experience required to perform the tasks. The course is also based on adult outcomes based education principles. This gives the candidate the opportunity to network in a typical group environment, thereby understanding and gaining knowledge of various industries, hearing different views and opinions and improving his or her own communication skills. Offering the full scope The Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course covers the full health and safety scope and includes aspects like legislation, functions of a Health and Safety Representative, principles of Health and Safety, risk assessment and implementation and evaluation of safety management programs. The course is divided into different chapters. Each chapter can be presented individually and at a different time. This makes it possible to spread the course over a longer period, instead of being lectured for to 10 days consecutively. The course content has been put together by a team of dedicated and experienced health and safety professionals, who are able to draw knowledge and information from the vast database Makrosafe has created since it joined the industry, many years ago. The course is fully recognised and accredited by the Health and Welfare SETA. The course also does not expire, as it is a skills program qualification, which does not require that refresher training for the particular unit standards have to be done. As accidents in the workplace occur every day, the South African industry can certainly do with more health and safety professionals. Since 2010, the government has already been calling on the business community to assist in creating another five million jobs in the coming years. If only a small percentage would attend the Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course, the call will be answered and the target will be met. More importantly, workplaces in South Africa would become a safer place.

SABC to give boxing more coverage
Gwazela vs Mboyane. Photo from MBOLO PHOTOGRAPHY
Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC), Boxing South Africa (BSA) and the Department of Sport and Recreation finally reached an agreement that local boxing will get enough airplay on television screen.
The latest development is a result of resolutions taken at last year’s Boxing Indaba. Live boxing coverage had dried up on SABC screens from 2010. Well-decorated boxing trainer Nick “Mthakathi” Durandt once lashed out at the SABC, accusing the public broadcaster of killing the sport. The outspoken trainer/manager, who has produced 30 world champions, said at that time that “the constant television blackout of live

matches was to the detriment of boxing.” Acting SABC chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng said the move of broadcasting boxing matches on their television channels was motivated by the need for all parties to serve all South Africans accordingly. “We are at this stage working on a broader SABC strategy that includes bringing back live boxing on-air. As the public broadcaster, we are ready to showcase the South African boxing talent in the next fiscal year.” Speaking to tame TIMES Boxing, South Africa spokesperson Loyiso Mtya said the recently signed boxing broadcasting deal is the best news heard within boxing circles in a long time. He said boxing fans initially thought that the sport is fading because of lack of exposure. “We have some of the best boxers in the country who are not known by fellow South Africans due to lack of publicity. Our boxers leave the country to compete internationally and come back victorious. However, fellow South Africans do not know anything about their great boxing achievements. Boxers such as Simphiwe Vityeka went to Australia and managed to gain two world titles. However, a large number of South Africans didn’t know much about his great boxing triumph,” said Mtya. The former WBO Pan African champion Vusi Malinga from Katlehong said his last boxing fight that was broadcasted on SABC was in 2011 in Mafikeng. He was fighting for the IBF title against Michael Domingo from Philippines. “One of the biggest boxing matches I have fought in 2012 was the IBF world title against Leo Santa Cruz in United States of America. I was disappointed that it wasn’t broadcasted in any of the three SABC channels. Last year I also fought for the IBF world title against Stuart Hall in the United Kingdom. Again that big boxing match wasn’t broadcasted by any of our SABC channels,” concluded Malinga.
Maximise opportunity at FNB Varsity Cup level of rugby and the teams and players, take the competition very seriously.” Ross’ words are echoed by former Springbok Captain Francois Pienaar, “The FNB Varsity Cup is such a valuable contribution to building a sustainable talent pipeline for our national and provincial teams.” “Ross’ rise to professional ranks is proof that the current formula of nurturing rugby talent is working. The fact that we have a former varsity player captaining one of the top teams in the country is testament to the success of talent development efforts,” Pienaar said. Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Kaizer Chiefs secured another three points when they triumphed their Soweto rivals, Moroka Swallows, on Friday 31 January. Amakhosi’s 2 - 0 win over the Birds marks Chiefs’ eighth consecutive PSL win and extended their lead on the log to ten points clear of
second-placed SuperSport United. Chiefs started the game with their foot firmly planted on the gas and it only took four minutes for them to find the back of the net through Kingston Nkatha. The second goal came late in the second half through Knowledge Musona’s cheeky chip over the advancing goalkeeper.
Delivering a professional experience Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Next in our series of personnel profiles at the A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club is the man responsible for overseeing all the coaching at the club, head coach Kaya Malotana. Malotana’s journey to the Alberton-based club shares one name in common with Lawrence Sephaka, who we profiled last week. The vision of Manie Reyneke, which includes building the club up to a semi-professional structure, has turned to be the passion of the Eastern Cape-born winger. Kaya started playing Rugby in the former Transkei (now Eastern Cape Province) and although this was in no way professional, this stage was fundamental to the love of the game which propelled him all the way to the 1999 IRB World Rugby Cup. “I started playing in proper structures in 1991, when I was at Queens College Boys High. It was not too long before I made the first team, which I played for in 1993 and 1994,” Kaya told tame TIMES. In 1994, Molatana participated in the Boarder Schools Craven week, and in the same year he was integrated into the South African Schools Academy. These achievements would have excited many a Rugby enthusiast, but Kaya confesses that at this level he had no ambition of playing anywhere else except within Boarder Rugby structures. “I was just enjoying my rugby. All I wanted to do was to make the grade for provincial rugby,” said the cool, approachable and often amusing Malotalna. Kaya soon was called up to the u/19 Junior World Cup side, which was captained by Bobby Skinstad. Although he had no ambition to play at the highest levels, coaches
saw the drive he possessed, especially during 1999 after suffering a dismal season in1998 due to injury. The comeback from the 1998 season landed him in the Springbok Green and Gold for the World Cup tour in the British Isles. Molatana now turns his focus to transferring his experience and implementing his plan, which he explains should take up to 3 seasons to achieve. “We firstly need to create an attractive enough platform for local boys to want to join the team. Then, once we have the numbers, we need to allow every player to experience a professional level of the game. My vision is anchored on growth and this applies to players and coaches alike. We want to uncover provincial players and also to transfer a discipline which will transcend the field, but also permeate into players’ personal and professional lives,” said Kaya as we wrapped up our brief conversation. Look out for the last of our personnel profiles in next week’s edition.
