“BEE is ‘n noodsaaklike program.

Share a Little, Save a Life:
A note from Become a stem cell donor today the Editor Of all things bright and beautiful, the sunflower stands tall. Always lifting its head, always looking up, always seeking the warmth and the light. What better symbol of hope than a Sunflower in a world which is so often dark and made darker still by the onset of a tragic illness? Simple, bold and strong, it is a universal symbol, used by many organisations around the world, always as a symbol of light and strength and hope. Founder-Director of the Sunflower Fund, Tina Botha’s teenage son, Chis Corlett, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. His only chance of survival was a bone marrow stem cell transplant. At the time The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SAMBR) had less than 1000 donors. After his first unsuccessful autologous transplant and an unsuccessful search over 6 million donors worldwide for a second unmatched transplant, Tina began her crusade to find him a suitable donor. During this time, in 1999, The Sunflower Fund formed in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett and Darren Serebro’s heroic struggle against leukaemia. It was formed by a group of parents whose children had contracted leukaemia, and in some cases lost their battle against it. Their aim was to increase the number of donors on SABMR. They hoped to give Chris and other
patients a chance at finding a suitable donor. Their hard work paid off and Chris had a donor. He underwent his second transplant and life seed normal. Unfortunately, Chris relapsed and passed away. Sunflowers of Hope was painted by Chris before his death. Other, in their days of darkness, have done the same. What a better symbol to be attached to a cause, which Chris and Darren fought so bravely for. The Sunflower fund has to generate funds to fight this good fight, but they still need more donors. Finding the correct donor match depends on tissue type and because people’s genetic makeup is so varied and their tissue types are inherited characteristics, the chance of finding a suitable match is slim. In South Africa we have even more unique combinations of tissue types and therefore we need larger registry that proportionately reflects these unique tissue types. The people of South Africa are what it takes to help the Sunflower Fund save lives. You may be someone’s only chance, so why not give a little to save a life? For more information on joining the South African Bone Marrow Registry or if you have any other queries regarding the Sunflower Fund or donating to the work that they do, call toll free: 0800 12 10 82 or call Shelby at 082 467 5427.
Good news to all existing and new clients! You are welcome to join me at my new premises at 83 Lombard Street, Cnr Jacqueline Ave, Raceview.
This past week has indeed been one of my better ones since this year began, and as I sit here trying to put my finger on what exactly it is that makes me feel this way, all I can attribute to this is the phenomenon of getting involved. We had quite an interesting week with the weekend’s voter registrations, the midweek visit from the DA’s Provincial Premier candidate and various other inspiring community related developments. I think that often we are too hard on ourselves because things do not happen as they are expected to, or because we initially don’t look like we are even interested in participating. I say this referring to the born-free generation. But then when the time comes to act, we act. A huge shout-out to Jeané Joubert, Nicole Delpede, Antoinette Volschenk, Monique Stander and all the born-frees who registered this past weekend. tame TIMES were involved in the annual Alberton Business League Bowls and the Parkrun.
By Ndu Ngwenya These activities must have also contributed to my ‘feel good week’. I encourage young and old to try these activities, even if it’s to just break out of routine. I could go on and on about the week behind us, but I feel it would serve better if I close off this week with a Lee Ann Womack lyric: “When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.” Stay blessed.
Donate blood and show some love February, the month of love, is celebrated as a romantic day to declare one’s love for another. At the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) we celebrate this love every month. Make a patient’s Valentine’s Day special this year by donating blood. All blood groups are very important. However Group O is the group that is often in short supply. The demand for this is much higher as it can be used for patients of all other blood groups. If you belong to the blood groups A and AB, why not consider becoming a platelet donor? Platelet donation is a simple process that takes about one and a half hours to
complete. The blood is processed through a cell separator, which retains the platelets and returns the other blood components to the donor’s system. This procedure enables people to donate platelets every month. According to Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager at the SANBS, their daily collection of blood needs to be 3000 units in order to maintain a good blood stock level. The SANBS therefore encourages all eligible donors to share their liquid love this month and commit to donating blood a minimum of four times a year. As a gesture to say “thank you” the SANBS has a special gift for those who donate four units in a calendar year.
In order to become a blood donor you must: - Weigh at least 50kg - Be between the ages of 16-65 - Lead a safe sexual lifestyle - Be in general good health; and - Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient.

As per my daily routine I go to teach every afternoon. I was in the vehicle with my four kids and another teacher. We take the N12 Kimberley every day. As we were just passing the Sun Hotel (the old Formula One) I asked my friend if he saw what the truck just did. That’s when I completely slowed down. The robots were red. There was a line of traffic on either side. The truck was facing down heading towards Alberton town. He drove over the island, cut across the main road on the wrong side and headed for the off-ramp. As he took the turn for the off-ramp he knocked the kerb. At that time I was the first car waiting to take off (at the side of the hotel). At the speed he was going when he
knocked the kerb his truck tilted slightly and that’s when all his crates started falling off the truck. I panicked. As the crates started falling bottles started breaking. Other concerned drivers started reversing an allowed me to reverse or else the bottles would have all landed on by bonnet. I am a Muslim and beer is totally forbidden for me. We were more in shock that our car was now contaminated with the beer and the stink was disgusting. To my disgust this truck driver carried on almost halfway down the ramp. Only when he realised what had happened did he stop. I immediately had to leave because I needed to get my car cleaned. God saved us from another man’s hurry and negligence.

He-Man: Alberton men invited to share
By Clara Freedman
There are times in our lives when we are faced with making decisions that will affect not only our own lives, but those of others around us. We often put off and delay making up our minds, thinking or hoping the problems will resolve themselves. Most of the time it is the fear of facing reality and then taking steps to overcome those fears. It is at times like these that you will find there is help, help from people who care; reaching out to you, helping you to not give up and walking the road with you. Openness and admitting to a problem are not the only solution; an additional route to a solution present themselves in the form of a sympathetic and trustworthy ear, that trustworthy person you can turn to for assistance and guidance without fear of judgment. He-Man is a relaxed environment where men of any age, race and situation can come and share their troubles and find that sympathetic ear. Situated at AmcareSteppingstone (behind the Lemon Tree Centre), the sessions will commence on 18 March. This project was established as a response to a question posed by tame TIMES’ columnist Nieto Hernandez, in a piece titled ‘Time to man-out?’ (Available at www.tametimes.co.za) Attendees and supporters of the group will be identified with a knotted blue and green
ribbon. The knot in the ribbon serves as a reminder not to give up. When there seems to be no light in sight, as if you are alone, do not give up. Victory waits just around the next turn, whether you are on the road to recovery or beginning a new life filled with hope. The peace of mind gained from a problem shared, reduces any problem to half a problem.

Ellen Gladys Williams was born on 13 February 1914 in Kimberly, at the dawn of World War One. This year, on Friday 13 February, Ellen turns 100 years old, and apart from a hip replacement, a hearing aid and cataracts in her eyes, she is as fit as a fiddle. Ellen is the only one in her family to reach the 100-year mark. Her husband and all of her nine siblings have passed on, and the closest anyone in her family has come to her lifetime was her grandmother, who passed away at the age of 99. Ellen can still communicate perfectly and her mind is healthy. She remembers all of her loved ones and she suffers from no illnesses. She is content with her life and now focuses on her children and grandchildren. “I did a lot through God’s grace. I’ve done everything I wanted. I can now sit back and see what [they] do,” she says. Despite her age, Ellen can easily bend over to touch her toes. She cooks dinner every day and she even has Facebook. According to Ellen’s son, Arthur Williams, her recipe for a healthy life was good food, a loving family and keeping busy by travelling overseas and by selling various goods for profit.

CANSA to host its 11th Shavathon CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Governor, Manny de Freitas said that it feels almost unbelievable that the CANSA Shavathon is now 10 years old and that 2014 is the 11th National CANSA Shavathon. “Hundreds of thousands of South Africans of all walks of life have shown their solidarity with cancer survivors at the past annual Shavathons, when they have either shaved or sprayed their hair,” De Freitas said “CANSA plans on making this year’s Shavathon the biggest yet,” explained De Freitas. As it has been done in previous years, corporates, schools and organisations will have the opportunity to host their own Shavathon between 24-28 February. Official CANSA Shavathon events will take place at shopping centres across the country on Saturday 1 March, where the cost to shave or spray (which is easily washed off) your hair or donate a ponytail is R50 for adults, and R25 for children under 12 years of age. By shaving or spraying your hair, it is a visual sign of solidarity with those who have undergone and are undergoing cancer therapy when they loose their hair. In
addition to the options of shaving or spraying their hair, people also have the opportunity to purchase a CANSA Wrap for their hair (at a cost of R50) and to also donate their ponytail at CANSA Shavathons across the country. Ponytail donations received by CANSA are handmade into wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair as a result of their cancer treatment. Great pride is taken in making the wigs, to ensure the wig is as close to a natural look as possible. Wigs are available at all CANSA Care Centres and provided at no cost to the public. To donate a ponytail, hair must be at least 22cm in length, and must be clean and dry. De Freitas said that all funds raised go to the important programmes that CANSA runs in the fight against cancer.
The harmful effects of marijuana The immediate effects of taking marijuana include rapid heartbeat, disorientation, lack of physical coordination, often followed by depression or sleepiness. Some users suffer panic attacks or anxiety. The problems do not end there, according to scientific studies the active ingredient in cannabis, THC, remains in the body for weeks or longer. Marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke. One major research study reported that a single cannabis joint could cause as much damage to the lungs as up to five regular cigarettes smoked one after another. Long-time joint smokers often suffer from bronchitis. The drug can affect more than your physical health. Studies in Australia in 2008 linked years of heavy marijuana use to brain abnormalities. This is backed up by earlier research on the long-term effects of marijuana, which indicate changes in the brain similar to those caused by long-term
abuse of other major drugs. A number of studies have shown a connection between continued marijuana use and psychosis. Studies show that the mental functions of people who have smoked a lot of marijuana tend to be diminished. The THC in cannabis disrupts nerve cells in the brain affecting memory. Cannabis is one of the few drugs that causes abnormal cell division, which leads to severe hereditary defects. A pregnant woman who regularly smokes marijuana or hashish may give birth prematurely to an undersized, underweight baby. Over the last ten years, many children of marijuana users have been born with reduced initiative and lessened abilities to concentrate and pursue life goals. Studies also suggest that prenatal (before birth) use of the drug may result in birth defects, mental abnormalities and increased risk of leukemia 1 in children. (www.drugfreeworld.org)

Psalms is

Busting animal myths There are many different myths surrounding animals. Here are two fairly common beliefs that are not true and the facts are given. MYTH: Worm under a dog’s tongue. FACT: Unfortunately this myth is still believed today and causes untold pain and suffering to dogs. It is thought that dogs have a worm under their tongues and the removal of which is called ‘worming’ and is supposed to prevent the dog from biting, should he ever go crazy. It results in the cutting out of the lingual fraenulum, which unfortunately contracts and curls up like a worm and strengthens the belief that it is indeed a worm. With this ligament cut out, the dog has no control over his tongue and this can result in the dog dying due to severe swelling of the mouth and an inability of the animal to drink or eat.
MYTH: Cats need to drink milk. FACT: Cats do not need milk. It does not aid their metabolism or digestion. In fact, most cats can be lactose intolerant. Too much milk is likely to give them diarrhoea. Some cats may experience diarrhoea after just a small amount of milk. A diet of healthy commercial cat food or raw food and water is all the cat needs to meet its dietary requirements. Next time you hear something about an animal, check it out first.

Depression (4) Almost 20% of adolescents between the ages of fourteen and eighteen years suffer from different degrees of depression. Suicide can be seen as one of the most visible effects of depression. According to a study from the University of KwaZulu-Natal one out of every 12 South African high school pupils has tried to commit suicide. Apart from the immediate effect of depression on the adolescent, which include a likelihood to criminal activities and dropping out of school, long term effects range from very
troubled teenage years on to that of an adult needing to cope with many additional challenges such as recurring depression, suicidal behaviour, substance abuse, not furthering studies after school, having poor work records and/or finding it difficult to find employment. It is therefore of utmost importance that a parent have their child assessed if they suspect a possibility that their child might be suffering from depression. Krejcir accused denied bail weekend successes Alberton SAPS:
Jan Mofokeng, from the organised crime unit in Germiston, is the sixth suspect arrested in the kidnapping case that has kept Krejcir behind bars since November.
Two accused, of the five arrested, in a plot to kill Krejcir investigating officers, Paul O’Sulivan and Colonel Nkosana ‘Killer’ Ximba, have been denied bail. Sergeant Nandi Nkosi and Zodumiso Biyela appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on 6 February on Schedule 5 offence charges. Magistrate Deon Schnetler stated due to the nature of the charges against Nkosi and Biyela, they needed to prove that it would be
in the interest of society to be granted bail. Schnetler denied the accused bail as they did not fulfil the requirements. The case was remanded to 18 February, when Nkosi and Biyela will join Siboniso Miya, Owen Serrero and Jacob Nare on charges of conspiracy, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of stolen vehicles and theft. with the attempted murder and kidnapping charges connected to Radovan Krejcir appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on 6 February for his official bail application. Jan Mofokeng, from the organised crime unit in Germiston, is the sixth suspect arrested in the kidnapping case that has kept Krejcir behind bars since November. The state advocate, Lethabo Mahiane argued that numerous witnesses in the kidnapping case have been threatened. Mashiane said some of the witnesses are in a protection program but not all of them. Mashiane further argued that Mofokeng knew where the witnesses live and who their families are, therefore the court should oppose bail. The case refers to an incident in June where the six suspects allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a man whose brother, known only as ‘Doctor’, disappeared with a 25kg shipment of drugs he had been recruited to help smuggle through OR Tambo International Airport. They are accused of keeping the man at Krejcir’s Money Point business in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, for four days and assaulting him.

Kinderverkragter Safety first verdeel familie Amy-Mae Campbell
While many of us were out at various registration stations we could be reassured of our safety. Something that we often take for granted, but if you pay attention to some news feeds from other parts of the country where incidents of petrol Brackendowns Const Moloi and bombs being thrown at Capt Foord. registration centres and violence aimed at officials and voters, that perception over safety would be altered quickly. Upon our visits to various stations in the Alberton area we took notice of both SAPS and EMPD officers manning the stations and making sure the frustrations were limited to perhaps initially visiting the wrong voting station. We at tame TIMES would like to acknowledge the efforts and take some time to thank the officers for their relentless drive to make ours a safer community.

Safety tips at home: Prevent housebreakings - Know all emergency numbers - Never leave keys in a gate or lock - Make provision for good outside lighting; remember outside lights that are on during the day draw the attention of thieves. - Don’t leave your garage, front or backdoor open or partially open, it serves as an invitation to burglars. - Never open the door automatically whenever the doorbell rings or if someone knocks. Make sure the person wanting to enter is expected. - If your house alarm goes off or you hear strange noises or your dog barking, switch on the outside lights and investigate with caution. Do not go outside before you are sure it is safe. If you have a panic button, keep it close at hand and use it if you see anyone on your property. Don’t wait, you can always call to cancel the response.

The origin of Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day has its origins in the ancient Christian and Roman society. It is still uncertain exactly where Valentine’s Day originated from, but according to History. com, one of the legends refers to a priest and martyr named St Valentine, who served in the Catholic Church during the third century in Rome. According to one of these legends, Emperor Claudius the Second outlawed marriage for young men as he decided that unmarried men were better soldiers. Valentine is said to have fought to redeem marriage and in the end paid with his life. Another legend has it that Valentine fought for Christianity in oppressive Rome and was imprisoned. Valentine apparently fell in love with the jailor’s daughter and sent her a secret love letter declaring his love for her that was signed “from your Valentine”, which we still use today. Valentine’s Day was thereafter celebrated in memory of St Valentine’s death. Valentine’s greetings were only documented in print around the 1400s. The oldest documented Valentine’s letter was written in 1415 by an imprisoned duke to his wife during the battle of Agincourt. Another description of Valentine’s Day is that it was a Roman festival, Lupercalia, which was celebrated on 15 February. The festival was held in celebration of the Roman god Lupercus, who, according to Roman mythology, started the tradition of drawing a woman’s name each year at this

festival who would then become his sexual partner for the year. Pope Gelasius the First was not thrilled with this custom and changed it to young men and women drawing the names of saints that they would emulate for the year. The tradition of young men seeking women’s affections during the February festival became an annual celebration known as Valentine’s Day.

Valentines parkrun
The dance of passion By Unathi Qubeka It has been said that the tango provokes sensual tension between all men and women in the dance hall. With Valentines Day on Friday, Tango Fire - Flames of Desire is a must see for all couples. The skilled display of dexterity and craft seeps extravagantly from the stage. Tango Fire is an incredible show to watch. The choreographer seems to have pre-empted the need for variety in style, creating an exciting spectacle of Argentinean creativity. The choreography becomes progressively elaborate and dramatic. A little knowledge of tango is required, as it is an art form that demands some interpretation; ignorance could make one mistake the beautifully flowing movement as “rubbery-leg-dancing” with sultry dramatic pauses. Tango Fire is a series of various scenes - a patchwork of dances. The accompanying quartet is superb; filling the theatre with music that carries the audience to another continent where cigars and rich coffee mingle easily. Tango Fire is brought to you by the Tango Fore Company of Buenos Aires. These Argentinean dancers show South Africa just how sensual and passionate they get about dancing. Seat prices range from R100 to R250, and tickets are on sale by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com, or on 0861 670 670.

Jack Valve.
Vir meer inligting, kontak Mark Assante by 071 879 9263.

Holy Rosary High School pupils Shellsea Branquinho, Kim Watson, Zarina Cooper, Kelsey Maskell, Bianca-Jade Sutton with members of the ‘Old Hogs’ motorbike group, with front: David Cohen, Amy Driver and Gabriel Ferreira. Real men don’t hit women, this is the slogan for the Ride for a Purpose initiative that was launched by the Holy Rosary School on Thursday 6 February. Party busses and hundreds of bikers are meeting at Holy Rosary, in Edenvale, on Sunday 30 March to ride to Hartebeespoort Dam - all for a cause. The person behind the initiative is 15-yearold Amy Driver, whose aunt was a victim of domestic violence. Four years ago she was killed by her own husband. Amy and her mother have managed to rope in many sponsors with the support of Holy Rosary to raise awareness about social responsibility and domestic violence. Even though the school started this initiative, it stretches far beyond the school and they encourage other schools and communities to participate in this soon to become annual event. Amy wants to debunk the myth that domestic violence is limited to disadvantaged or poor communities, and replace it with the reality:
that it can happen even in the wealthiest of homes. Holy Rosary has incorporated this initiative into their debutantes programme, where all the money raised will go towards this initiative. The Ride for a Purpose bike rally symbolises a unity against women abuse. All the funds raised during this rally will go towards the Jess Foord foundation. Everyone is welcome. Date: 30 March 2014 Time: 09:00 sharp Depart from: Holy Rosary’s Shanahan Park, Adjudant Road, Elma Park, Edenvale. Destination: Route 66 saloon and diner, Hartebeespoort Dam. Tickets: R250 per bike and party bus passenger (includes Sunday Carvery) and under 12’s pay R100 (including bus ticket and Sunday Carvery). Booking is essential; the deadline is 20 March. For booking information contact Shareen at shareen@reds-explo.co.za or on 073 1302 176.
Folk music has become commercial over the past year with a number of folk singers becoming part of pop culture. It was only a matter of time before folk music reached film, and Ster-Kinekor being a trend setter gave us the opportunity to experience the folk world first hand last Wednesday night at a special screening of Inside Llewyn Davis at Rosebank Mall’s Cinema Nouveau. What better way to celebrate folk music than with our home-grown folk singer Matthew Mole, who performed an intimate set with a number of his famous hits such as Autumn. He also performed one of the prominent songs in the film called Hang Me, Oh Hang Me. Inside Llewyn Davis, a film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, known collectively as The Coen Brothers, centres on Llewyn Davis, a struggling Folk singer who just lost his singing partner, and how he tries to get a proper recording deal in the 1960s while battling life’s hardships at the same time. The film is loosely based on true events. Stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan give us a real look at the life of a struggling artist in a not so popular genre of music and, whether you like folk music or not, you can’t help but respect the genre in its entirety. The film has already been nominated for two Academy awards, making it a must see. And if you’re a fan, Justin Timberlake has a cameo in the film.

Albertonians need Costly crossing of lines to be made aware Unhappy reader writes:
My prepaid meter was cut off on 29 January 2014, due to late payment. I immediately went to the Ekurhuleni Offices and paid my account. The lady there phoned the technician to put on the power and I returned to work without any concern. After work I arrived home at the same time as the technician. I went outside to thank him for coming to put the power back on, only to get confronted with a story that the box was tampered with and I will have no power. I told him this was ridiculous and that I would take this further. I also enquired as to why the box stands unlocked on the pavement, as anyone has access. The technician said it was not his problem and I should contact Ekurhuleni with my query. For two days I drove up and down to the Ekurhuleni Offices, to no avail. I then went to the Police Station and signed an affidavit as proof of my innocence, which I took to the Ekurhuleni offices early the next morning (Friday 31January). I asked to have my track record checked for the three years I have lived at this address and they refused to help until I paid a fine of R2052.00 for tampering. I was told that Ekurhuleni is not responsible to prove who did the tampering even though the box stands open on the pavement. I have also contacted my local counsellor, Estelle Visser, and she had forwarded the e-mail to Ekurhuleni for comment. I paid the fine and asked them to mark the receipt “Without Prejudice” as I had no choice but to pay to have my electricity reinstated. The gentleman laughed at me and grudgingly wrote it on. As I am a single mom
I find this unfair to my children and myself as we were without power for three days. My food went off in the fridge and had to be thrown away. My Security was also at risk as there was no connection to the company concerned. Warning: If you see your electrical box open on the pavement, please contact Ekurhuleni immediately or you could also be in the same situation. SECURITY CONCERN: Unlocked electricity boxes a common sight in Alberton
Chris Kruger, a businessman in Brackenhurst, incurred expenses and losses in excess of R10 000 as the result of two power failures that affected the area in which he conducts business. The first power failure took place on 9 January and the second one happened on 28 January. Kruger explains that his frustrations began when the initial failure was rectified. “I learnt soon after the power returned that something was wrong, all my equipment was running backwards and effectively malfunctioning.” Kruger explains that this seemingly bizarre occurrence, caused by the swopping of phases, would never happen with normal household appliances, which operate at 220 volts, whereas heavy industrial machinery operating at 380 volts would be severely affected. “When I saw my carwash machine running backwards and the compressors taking in air instead of blowing it out I realised we were in trouble. Firstly because the machinery is designed in Germany and maintained by one person in South Africa. We would suffer loss of business during the inevitable downtime due to damages. Secondly, because of the financial implications linked with the
repair process - I’d have to foot the bill.” Kruger decided, after unfruitful consultation attempts with Ekurhuleni, that he should sort out his machinery himself, and this worked for him although it cost him. This solution worked well until the next power failure, as the resulting rectification happened with another swopping of phases. Following the second breakdown Kruger made efforts to speak to the Chief Electrical Engineer, who acknowledged that the switching of phases could cause damage to three-phase equipment. Chris told tame TIMES that the simplest and most considerate thing that the electricity department could do is communicate, through all available means, when they will be switching phases. “When I spoke to the electricity department I got an indication that they would be switching phases again in the winter season, and this scares me as a business owner, because I may face the same problem when winter comes,” said a concerned Kruger. tame TIMES would like to know if any other businesses have suffered similar implications. If you have been affected or know of anyone who has, please share with us, as a Citizen Journalist, on www.tametimes.co.za.

Ekurhuleni expects payments The delayed delivery of printed municipal account statements is not reason enough for customers not to pay their accounts or to pay them late, says the Ekurhuleni municipality. The on-going interruption of postal services has seen a number of frustrated customers not receiving their statements on time and they have either skipped payment or paid late, thus incurring arrears on their accounts. “We are aware of the strike by post office workers. However, it was in view of circumstances like these, amongst others, that the municipality introduced numerous options that only serve to make accessibility
of statements and payments easy. The nonreceipt of a statement does not exempt any person from the liability to pay such an account,” metro’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe said. Residents are encouraged to pay similar amounts to the previous month’s statements should they not have received their current statements “Due dates for payments are fixed and don’t change from month to month. When in doubt, customers may phone the numbers at the back of their previous statement,” Gadebe added, “alternatively they can e-mail their account numbers, including contact details, to accontenquiries@ekurhuleni.gov.za.”

Warning to senior citizens Concerned reader writes:
I’m an elderly woman residing in South Crest. During the course of last week two gentlemen travelling in a small white bakkie knocked at my gate. When I asked who they were, the men identified themselves as electricity meter inspectors subcontracted by the electricity department. The men requested that I open my gate and allow them to inspect my prepaid meter. I immediately refused to allow them access into my home as they could not produce any formal identification, they were not in uniform and their vehicle didn’t have any markings that I could relate to the job they said they were here to do. I also explained to them that I have received several text messages about posers robbing unsuspecting homeowners. The men and I had a drawn-out discussion and I eventually allowed the one guy in to check. When he arrived at the meter, he didn’t do
much ‘inspecting’, all he did was look at the seal on the box, and then he took a photo and told me the meter was tampered with. I asked him how this was true and he couldn’t explain. I escorted him out, where he and his friend then asked me if they could see my electricity card to see if it corresponded with their files (just a pile of papers). I showed them my card and they remarked, “Granny your meter and card correspond with faulty systems we have on record.” I again asked how, but they couldn’t say. All they told me is that they would be back the next day and that I would have to pay a fine. The men haven’t been back and I haven’t heard anything from Ekurhuleni. I am now convinced that I was almost a victim of a scheme to extort money from me. I write this as a warning, mostly to the elderly: Do not open your doors to anyone unless they prove that they are indeed whom they say they are.

High schools urged to register for debating league
Bracken High’s new teachers
Ekurhuleni high schools are encouraged to register for the 2014 Solid Foundation Debating League. The registration was opened on 3 February and is set to close on 20 March. The league will commence on 3 May and end on 25 May with the finals. This year the Solid Foundation Debating League is targeting 100 high schools from all over the Ekurhuleni metro. Sithembiso Mdlalose, the Tournament Director said that they have partnered with the Wits Debating Union to provide a top quality tournament compared to last year. “The schools that did not receive invitations and application forms from the Department of Education in the Ekurhuleni region, but they can get them through contacting our organisation representatives. The league invites 5 speakers to the round robin debates. It can be a combination of the juniors and seniors (Grade 7-12) debaters. However, if a school has two separate teams the juniors and seniors should inform the league

representatives in advance. This is because seniors are allocated 8 minutes for speeches, with 4 minute response speeches. The junior’s speeches are 7 minutes with 3 minute response speeches.” The debaters are required to wear their school uniforms during the league. There will be four prepared motions for the entire weekend. Schools need to be accepted in the tournament via registration in order to receive the prepared motions. Each school is required to provide a person willing to function as an adjudicator for their school, for which training will be provided. He added that they are appealing for assistance in terms of running the league. Mdlalose said people can sponsor any form of donation, such as awards to be presented to the winners, transport, printing, funds and food. For more information regarding the debating league contact Sithembiso Mdlalose at 084 902 3013 or e-mail: Sithembiso.tobias@gmail.com.

Final voter registration Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za South African citizens eligible to vote in the 2014 election, which will be held on 7 May, as of President Zuma’s announcement, took to the registration stations this past weekend (8 – 9 February) to take advantage of their final opportunity to be on the voters’ roll. tame TIMES visited several registration stations to hear the views of the community, and also just to document responsible citizens going through the process that will ultimately see them exercising their right to choose their government. Many parents were seen at the station accompanied by their children in scenes that would assure even the biggest cynic that, as a country, we are ready to own the future direction of South Africa. These are some of the faces we encountered on our travels to various stations in the Alberton area. Feel free to send us (ndu@tametimes. co.za) your photos and your experience of the registration process. See more photos on www.tametimes.co.za.

SA conquer French at Serengeti Alberton Angling Club results
The South African juniors defeated the French in a two-day Test at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate. South Africa’s top four ranked juniors rallied to a five point victory against the French in the final round of a two-day Test at the Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate on Saturday. The South Africans dominated the first round 4.5 – 1.5, but the local heroes came under a little pressure when the visitors claimed one of the foursome matches and halved the other early in the final round. The livened-up chase by the French only seemed to fire up the South Africans. The country’s number one Kyle McClatchie employed his local course knowledge to lead a spirited comeback, handing Chantilly’s Victor Veyret a 7 and 5 drubbing that put the Proteas back in control, while Southern Cape’s Jovan Rebula defeated Thomas Le Berre from Chantilly 4 and 3, and Limpopo’s Hennie du Plessis survived a hard-fought scuffle against Alexandre Daydou from
Cannes Mougins to triumph 1-up. “The team spirit of this side was pretty obvious when Kyle, Jovan and Hennie, having already secured the victory, all went to support Thriston (Lawrence), who was entangled in a tough battle against Paul Elissalde,” said team manager, Eden Thompson. The battle between the reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion and the top ranked French junior from Bairritz le Phare lasted the distance, with the match ending in a draw and Lawrence securing half a point to give the South Africans an 8.5 – 3.5 victory. “It was a great battle against Paul,” the Mpumalanga teenager said. “None of us wanted to sacrifice a single point and I am thrilled that I was able to get a half point for the team.” Thompson said the spirit in the camp was truly inspirational.
Jordaan announces changes at SAFA
Jordaan and SAFA take on the challenge of overhauling Bafana Bafana. Photo from wikimedia.org Dr Danny Jordaan, President of SAFA, has announced that after a three-day meeting with Lekgotla of the National Executive Committee (NEC) members, SAFA is to embark on a major overhaul concerning the following areas and others: •An increased emphasis on the development of youth teams and women’s football. •The reintroduction of inter-provincial tournaments for men and women. •Tightening of lower league regulations to improve standards. •A greater emphasis on scientific research to improve player performance. Part of this program will be in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and other institutions of higher learning. “If we are to have a national team that can compete with the best in the world, then we have to strengthen development at all
levels in order to produce players capable of beating the best in the world,” said Dr Jordaan He said that the Lekgotla had acknowledged that women’s football has not been receiving the attention it deserved. “We will be working harder to identify and develop promising young women to help them achieve their full potential,” he said. Jordaan said that the Lekgotla had decided on several steps to ensure the success of the program. A top SAFA team will engage with the Minister of Sport, universities and school sports governing bodies to decide on practical steps to strengthen youth teams. SAFA also intends to create footballing academies in all nine provinces, the first of which has already been established in KwaZulu-Natal. “I am aware that there is speculation surrounding Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund. I read in the news that this coach or that coach is coming to take over from Gordon. Well, I want to say that, at the moment, there is no vacancy,” Jordaan added. Dennis Mumble, SAFA’s chief executive who has been charged with implementing the changes, stated that although this will be a costly exercise, he believes government, football bodies and sponsors will be available to assist in the implementation. “We are confident that this money will be found because it is so obviously important to all of South Africa. The future of South African football is riding on this if we are to achieve our objective of consistently being among the top 3 teams in Africa and the top 20 in the world.”

Lions take a beating at Ellis Park Ilze Moore
ilze@tametimes.co.za
The full strength Sharks team annihilated the tame Lions in their final warm up match on Friday night at Ellis Park, winning 57-14. The Lions knew there was a slim chance of making a comeback against the fierce Sharks team, who had a huge lead (31-0) as the whistle blew at half time.
In the first 90 seconds Springbok player Odwa Ndungane was the first over the try line, after an initial break by fly-half Patrick Lambie. Lambie continued creating opportunities for his team through solid tackle kicking and dangerous attacking runs. Ndungane scored another try in the 14th
minute, after which another try followed four minutes later by Pieter-Steph du Toit, taking the Sharks to a 19-0 lead after Lambie’s conversion. They continued their relentless attack with tries from Francios Steyn and Stephan Lewies. Ackerman stated before the clash against the Sharks that it was imperative to avoid injuries and rested some of their key players, as the players were preparing for Super rugby. The young Lions team found it very difficult to make their way back into the game against the Sharks, as the team filled with Springbok players continued with their relentless attack after half time. The Lions finally got onto the scoreboard when Stephan Vermeulen added the first try to the score sheet, but this was short lived as the Sharks scored shortly after in the 65th minute. Their efforts were futile following Coenie van Wyk’s try, which was converted to take the score to 50-14. S’bura Sithole added the final points of the game, ending the score at 57-14.

OFF THE PITCH
Where have all the crowds gone? We all know that it is the avid cricket spectator paying at the gates that contribute to the coffers of all the Cricket Governing Bodies around the world. In one way or another, around the world, we have By Craig Norris seen spectator numbers dwindle up and down in all formats of the game. I ask myself why the stadiums in general are half full, or even a quarter full, especially for Test Match Cricket and some of the ODI games across the globe. Can it be the cost of paying for a ticket to get through the turnstile and enjoy what is on offer, or is it that we are spoiled with live television recordings? We stop and think, why bother going to the stadium when I can stay at home and watch the game? I am spoiled and can save on traveling costs, I can also check on what is currently happening with all the other live games around the world from the comfort of lazyboy with my remote. The ICC needs to rethink their marketing of Test Match cricket if they want to move forward in the right direction, and get a bump in filled seats in all the Test Arenas. Australia seems to have the right formula as their stadiums are always brimming to the rafters. The KFC Big Bash is an example. Yes, granted that the Aussies have given the English a whipping in all formats of the game in the last few weeks, but you and I know one swallow does not make a summer. The organisers of the next Cricket ODI World Cup have promised that they will make the game more affordable for the everyday man and will ensure that the stadiums are full. However, it was great to see that our National T20 final on Sunday, a great contest with the Dolphins beating the locals by 2 runs, had a packed Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Good luck to the Proteas , who will hopefully experience a full-house crowd at Centurion Park with the first Test Match vs the Aussies.
