On 10 February at about 16:00 the body of Paul Ferreira, a 39-year-old Portuguese male, was found stuffed in a refuse bag inside a municipal bin on the back of a Nissan 1400 bakkie that was parked in a parking lot near Home Affairs in Alberton. The victim had multiple stab wounds. After investigation the municipal bin was traced to a house in Bassonia. Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson said, “The murder was allegedly committed in Bassonia on the very same day. The wife of the victim was arrested for questioning concerning the matter.” tame TIMES was on scene in Bassonia and witnessed the wife of the deceased, who is believed to be 29-years-old, being escorted by police. At first she seemed calm, but had occasional emotional outbursts when they escorted her. The SAPS forensics unit was also on scene, as blood was found in the house. After following leads on two other possible suspects who are allegedly involved in the murder, another arrest was made on 12 February. The 29-year-old male suspect was found in Westbury. tame TIMES is in possession of more information that was gathered at various points of the investigations, however with investigations still ongoing this information can’t be published. Visit www.tametimes.co.za and tame TIMES facebook page for live updates of the scene that evening.

The establishment of a new, A note “happy” township (the fifties) from

18 February 2014

the Editor A casual snap in the 1950s after wet weather in Thokoza. An interesting thing happened in the written history of Alberton as the town’s financial wealth grew. It yielded a list of achievements: the first sports stadium, the new civic centre, the six-lane highway, and so on, and the quality of human life in the town became lost under the welter of physical landmarks. Perhaps the loss of humanity was symptomatic of the times, for this was when Hendrik Verwoerd became Minister of Native Affairs, and “Separate Development” was enforced. So between the establishment of the first public library, the ambulance service and fire brigade, the new rail link to Alrode and the six-lane highway on Voortrekker Road, we find the brief note that the Mentz Commission had earmarked Palmietfontein for a black township. The purchase of Palmietfontein (for 76 321 pounds) had been accomplished by 1958, by which time the “old location” housed some 12 000 people “in most unsatisfactory conditions”. What is omitted is that this was the place known as Amagogokweni (since a “gogok” is a tin canister or drum, the name roughly translates as The Place of Tin) and was as vibrant and as loved by its inhabitants as the more sophisticated Sophiatown was to people in Johannesburg. In 1958 Verwoerd became Prime Minister. The following year the people of Amagogokweni

A well-known bus from yesteryear. were moved to the new township at Palmietfontein called Thokoza, meaning “let us be happy”. And the place where the tin town had stood was aptly renamed Verwoerd Park, which became a white suburb in 1971. The selection of an airfield for the new township had created at least one problem for the residents. Since an ideal airstrip is completely level, what happens to storm water? In the case of Thokoza, it just stayed there. The fifties saw the establishment of Alberton’s municipal bus service, amid the traditional storm of protest from rate payers (nine buses were provided for white passengers, and ten for black passengers), the public library began and the first maternity home opened its doors. Clichés are cliché because they work and, as cliché as this may By Ndu Ngwenya sound, goodbyes are hard to deal with. I would like to wish my colleague and friend, Ilze Moore, all the best as she leaves for South Korea to explore a new career. I wish you growth and success in all your endeavours. While on the theme of clichés; the past week was not without its fair share of pre-election drama as the DA took to the streets, protesting against the government’s failure to deliver on the promise of 6 million jobs. Read up on this and other political developments on our build-up to elections feature on page 10. On the lighter side of things, how did you and yours enjoy your Valentine’s Day? We would love to hear how you were swept away, so send us your stories or photos on www.tametimes.co.za.

Missing child found Justice served: Theologo in Brackendowns “I will be visiting Kirsty’s grave on Sunday and will lay her to rest knowing justice was served,” Leisha Du Toit, Kirsty Theologo’s cousin told tame TIMES after Judge Borchers handed down Lindon Wagner and Robin Harwood’s sentences on 12 February in the South Gauteng High Court. Harwood and Wagner were found guilty of murder and attempted murder after the pair were involved in the dousing (with petrol) and setting alight of Kirsty Theologo and Bronwyn Grammer. The incident took place in Linmeyer on 21

October 2011. Although both girls survived the ordeal, Kirsty died a few weeks later. Wagner was given a life sentence plus 18 years (to run concurrently), while Harwood was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Another co-accused, Courtney Daniels, was found guilty of common assault last year in November, and was given a five year suspended sentence. Harvey Isha was aquitted. Visit www.tametimes.co.za to view a video interview with Lindon Wagner’s mother and Liesha Du Toit, photos as well as previous articles on the case.

HIGH EMOTIONS: Palesa Swanpoel inside the police car and her mother Rochelle Swanpoel waiting to receive her. Palesa Swanpoel (9) went missing from her house in Peterson Street, Eden Park in the early hours of the morning of 10 February, around 3:00. She was found the same day, around 10:30 in Brackendowns, Alberton, alive and with no physical harm done to her. Rochelle Swanpoel, the mother, said Palesa enjoyed watching television, especially at night and early in the morning before she goes to school. “I woke up in the morning around 3:00 and she was awake. l asked her to fetch water for me, as l had a sinus problem. I went back to sleep and when l woke up around 5:00 l checked for her in the sitting room, where she usually watches television, and she was nowhere to be found. The main house door was closed but unlocked and we started searching for her all around our area but we could not find her. She left the house wearing a top and a gown and shoes,” said Swanepoel. The police were informed of the missing girl; the dog unit police force, the police helicopter and members of the community joined the search around the area and the surroundings open spaces and veld. The

child was not found and the police also informed the nearest police stations of the missing child. Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong Police Station said at around 10:30, while conducting a search, they received a phone call from the Brackendowns Police Station that the child was found in their area. “It is alleged that a domestic worker saw the child in Brackendowns walking with three unknown males, wearing the same clothes that she left home with. The domestic worker alleges that she saw the child for the second time now with no gown but wearing a pink tracksuit trouser. She said the child was alone crying and screaming for help. The child told the domestic worker that she does not know the three men that she saw her with and that she is lost and needs to go home to her parents. The domestic worker informed the police. The child was taken to her parents first and afterwards for medical check-up. It was confirmed that nothing physically harmful has been done to her. She is fine but traumatised in that she can’t recall what really happened,” said Captain Ndobe.

CTC Gift vouchers give beggars a fighting chance Have you ever felt guilty when passing a beggar on the street corner? Alberton CMR offers you a brand new way to show you care - Committed to Care. Most people are aware that you are not doing anyone a favour by handing out cash to beggars. A number of beggars use the cash to buy alcohol or drugs, and you can never be sure whether it is only an easier option than working. CMR Alberton now sells ‘Committed to Care’ Gift vouchers to the value of R25 per voucher at the CMR offices in Alberton, used to purchase a food parcel.* An interview will be held with the person to assess their situation. Sometimes beggars need more than food to survive the day. They might need to be taken to a shelter and will often need counselling to redeem their self-

esteem. The CMR social workers have the experience and knowledge to work with and assess these situations. The CTC voucher will give the recipient the chance to be enrolled in the CMR’s employment database. Funds raised with the sale of the coupons will be used to purchase ingredients for the food parcels and to assist with the cost of counselling. For more information on how to obtain CTC vouchers or to get involved with the project, whether you are a corporate or an individual, contact Ankia Jooste, Communications Manager at Alberton CMR on 011 907 2922. Alternatively you can visit: www.tametimes.co.za *Terms and conditions apply.

More movement Fall in love with in political parties Sweetie Pie Babies

COPE MEMBER: Vanessa Hani left Agang SA and is now a member of COPE. Congress of the People (COPE) welcomed Vanessa Hani, a former high-ranking Agang SA member and the daughter of late struggle veteran Chris Hani, on 11 February to their political party. Congress of the People feels this change is further testament to the growing appeal of COPE and further demonstration that the party remains the only viable opposition to the ruling party.

“Hani is a very dynamic young woman and we are confident she will add a lot of value to our movement,” COPE General Secretary Lyndall Shope-Mafole said. “It has been a difficult decision to make, but COPE has in a sense always been part of my home,” Hani said. “It is a pity that our people continue to hold on to the promises of a better South Africa that shall never be realised under the current leadership. “We have placed loyalty above integrity,” Hani said. “I feel I have joined a ship with a captain that has been tried and tested,” added Hani. Hani said her vision is to see a South Africa that is a true democracy and is accountable to the people. She said the current state of affairs where one party dominates the political landscape is not healthy for South Africa’s democracy. “COPE is a party that is willing and ready to work with everyone, that is one of the issues I considered before making this decision,” concluded Hani.

Woman @ Work celebrates Valentine’s Day Amy-Mae Campbell

LADIES IN RED: Sharon Smith (Cotlands), Toni Mackrell, and Lorraine Sutherland (guest speaker for the evening). On Wednesday 12 February the ladies of the Woman @ Work networking forum held their first event of the year at the Glenvista Country Club, to welcome their new members and to celebrate womanhood. The theme of the event was Valentine’s Day and the topic was ‘celebrating the woman you are’. All the ladies dressed-up smartly in red and spoilt each other with goody bags and Valentine’s presents that were sponsored by the forum members. Each month the ladies have networking events, where they have the opportunity to promote their businesses and to make friends and contacts. At each event they also donate to a charity of choice as part of their Woman @ Work Cares initiative. This month, the ladies decided to donate to Cotlands and a few of the ladies

were especially generous and donated up to R5000. The guest speaker for the evening was Lorraine Sutherland, a motivational speaker, etiquette teacher and businesswoman, who spoke about celebrating womanhood and the qualities of a healthy and confident women. Her advice was to love the skin you are in, to make positive affirmations every day and to be passionate about what you do in your life. The owner and founder of Woman @ Work, Toni Mackrell, who started this forum five years ago, was very pleased with everyone’s support and input into making the evening a success. A total of 120 ladies attended the event, and currently she has nearly 5000 registered ladies on her database. She is very excited about the year ahead and hopes to welcome many more fabulous ladies to the forum.

If you love dolls, then Sweetie Pie Babies is the perfect place for you. Sweetie Pie Babies is a reborn baby doll nursery in Alberton, where beautiful lifelike babies are created and where broken dolls are repaired and restored. According to Karin Lange, having a lifelike reborn baby doll is a new craze that is quickly gaining momentum in South Africa. Karin Lange and Elizabeth Ebersohn import doll kits from overseas and create true lifelike vinyl dolls. Sweetie Pie Babies each have a unique appearance and personality. The dolls are dressed in real infant clothing and their hair, which is micro rooted using premium quality mohair, can be delicately styled with baby products. The dolls are made of vinyl material, because it is soft to the touch like real baby skin. To add weight, ensuring a real baby feel, the bodies are filled with poly-pellets and soft fill, while the limbs are filled with glass beads. Each baby is fitted with a magnetic pacifier, which adds to a more realistic appearance. The restoration is done by Karin, who to date has restored far over 100 dolls. Most of the dolls that Karin received to restore were filled with cat sand and terribly rooted with thick plugs of hair. Sweetie Pie Babies are very delicate and they are therefore much sought-after. These lifelike dolls are lovely play-dolls for children. However, they should be cared for just as a real baby. These beautiful dolls are ideal for displaying around the house, where

their presence can keep you company. A doll collector in Alberante collected 16 dolls from Sweetie Pie Babies and is completely in love with them. Elizabeth also specialises in look-a-likes, by way of supplying a few photos she can create dolls that resemble the real baby. They have therapeutic value and it has been proven that senior citizens suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia benefit immensely from these dolls. Elizabeth once created a look-a-like doll for a client, resembling her daughter, who sadly passed away of cancer, which was very sentimental to the client. A Sweetie Pie Baby costs between R2400 and R2700, depending on the size. The most popular size is newborn, but they also stock Prem-babies and babies aged 0-3 months. The reborn baby has his/her own birth certificate, a baby-blanket and a soft toy, bracelet, pacifier and pacifier clip, nappies and a complete baby outfit. Karin and Elizabeth display the dolls every Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00 at 16 Bloutulp Street, Verwoerd Park, Alberton. The public is welcome to visit anytime during week-day afternoons. Contact Karin on 076 411 1784 or Elizabeth on 082 447 0900 for more information and also visit their website at www.sweetiepiebabies.com. Be prepared to fall in love.

My Head Voice:

Where do we leave the issue Opposition is not necessarily enmity; it is merely misused and made an occasion for enmity - Sigmund Freud I would forgive anyone who didn’t know that the previous week’s scenes in Johannesburg were actually about a genuine problem for South Africa on all sides of the country’s political landscape - the unacceptably high statistic of unemployed South Africans, especially youth. Although the cause may have been legitimate and noble, a number of fundamental blunders by both DA and ANC could have ended in a Marikana sequel. People’s lives were (either deliberately, or as consequence of shortsightedness) placed in danger for the sole benefit of a political branding exercise. The DA must be applauded for speaking up against mediocrity. In the past all the government has succeeded in doing is to make it increasingly difficult for entrepreneurs to conduct business and, as a result, placing more pressure on itself as the population who does not qualify is now more reliant on social grants and crime. That having been said, I question the direction of the protest. In SA, although the line may be blurred, there is a separation of party and state. So when we vote we vote for the party we want to assume the role of government, the party

is not however the government. So mistake number one (the opening of the can of worms), was marching to Luthuli instead of the Union Buildings. The second blunder on the cards was the day and time this march was scheduled for. Unemployment affects all South Africans, it would have served the cause much better if South Africans with and without jobs stood together to make the government realise the issue’s seriousness. On the ANC’s side of the fence, I fail to understand why they had to bus in armed people into Jozi to protect Luthuli House. What was the DA’s presence threatening? The second blunder of the ruling party, which brings up a question about standards, was the fact that only a few days before the strike they were condemning Malema’s EFF for promoting violence. What peace will be realised while we stand with bricks in hands and with clenched fists? All of these have robbed South Africa of an opportunity to find multi-party solutions to our very real problem. Let’s chat. Let me know what your thoughts on this topic are via e-mail voice@tametimes.co.za or drop me a tweet @NietoVoice.

Albertonians need to be made aware: Response Concerned rate payer writes: Reading the letters last week, I am of the opinion that Ekurhuleni should ensure that their service providers who carry out the electricity readings each month for the Rates and Taxes statements be taken to task for not ensuring that the boxes are locked once they have completed taking all the readings. Surely a penalty clause was inserted into the contract that would keep the service provider on their toes? Just drive down Rae Frankel Street, from Hennie Alberts Street, and see how many boxes stand open. Sometimes all the way to the one at the corner of Walnut Street and Tamarisk Street. I do my own reading and then lock the box myself. Once again lack of control from Ekurhuleni regarding their service providers who probably have a fat contract with them. No control at all.

CANSA Shavathon 2014 launched The CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Governor, Manny de Freitas officially launched the 2014 CANSA Shavathon at the Head Office of Mamba Strike Force Security company, who sponsored the launch. A CANSA certificate of thanks was handed to Mamba Operations Director, Kevin Norman and Marketing Head, Dominique Munro. Mamba Managing Director, Jonathan Hendricks and Finance Director, Jenny O’Connor were also thanked. In his address, De Freitas explained that CANSA is blessed to have the number of dedicated volunteers that it has. These volunteers, who De Freitas described as “unsung heroes”, give tirelessly to the cause of cancer. “This is visibly evident during the Shavathon,” said De Freitas. He provided statistics that pertain to the Shavathon, these include that over 60 000 tins of colour spray are used, over 1 600 hair clippers are used and that more than

300 shopping centre venues in South Africa are hosting CANSA Shavathon events on 1 March. Over and above that, over 400 workplaces and corporates participate in the Shavathon. New initiatives have been introduced, such as the online Shavathon introduced last year. “Although only 25 people participated online in 2013, collectively they raised an incredible R81 502,00. We hope to expand on this this year,” explained De Freitas Manny de Freitas said that the funds raised go to the services that CANSA provides, which include supporting 7493 cancer patients through 110 support groups and 2950 trained care and support volunteers. To launch the Shavathon 2014, the first person was sprayed and the first person was shaved for the year.

Vandag is steeds so.

Hallo al my lojale lesers!

beradingsentrum / counselling centre.

Uittreksel uit: As ‘n Kind se lag verdwyn – Gous & Gous 2009 Jahwe Rapha Beradingsentrum gekontak word by 082 495 8401

Child protection All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse

*Supplied by PSARU and Alberton Child Welfare

When are you considered a child? The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 stipulates that any person aged 0-18 years is a child. Adults are aged 19 and older. What are children’s rights? All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Parents who neglect their children or severely assault them are also overstepping their boundaries. We have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 to report suspected cases of child abuse to police, social workers or any designated child protection organisation in the area. If you are aware of child abuse and you turn a blind eye, you can also be prosecuted when it is eventually reported. By law, parents are not allowed to physically hit or belt a child at all. However, many parents believe in a proper hiding. When parents discipline a child, however, it must not be traumatic, as the child can report the adult for physical abuse in severe cases. Why should we protect our children and why is it important to look after them? Child protection is not merely a right, but it is important for their development. Any child needs to grow in all aspects of their lives: physically, emotionally, economically, spiritually, culturally and mentally. Parents and/or guardians and even the larger community are responsible for proper development of our children. Important definitions: Physical abuse: any act that results in inflicted injury or death to a child. Assault is a severe form of physical abuse inflicted through belting, for example. Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities. It is abuse whether the child has consented or not. Neglect is deliberately not providing for a child’s physical needs (such as food, warmth, shelter or protection from danger). Failure to seek or follow through with medical care and failure to make provision for the child’s education is also seen as neglect. Emotional and psychological abuse: a pattern that harms or limits a child’s emotional development or sense of self-worth. It can take the form of criticism, threats or rejection,

ignoring, isolating, taking advantage, corrupting, swearing at a child and lying to a child. Child exploitation is exposure of a child to the following situations: Child Labour Slavery Sexual exploitation Child-pornography Child trafficking How do you know whether a child is being abused? Check for warning signs, such as frequent bruising or injuries that cannot be explained, and a change in the child’s usual behaviour. Other signs also include obsessions, inappropriate sexual behaviour, inappropriate anger, bed-wetting and difficultly sleeping or nightmares. Important to know: In South Africa, there has been a significant increase in child abuse, especially with boys. According to national stats, approximately one in five children are abused. It has been proven that approximately 80% of the sexual abuse offenders are well known by the family and/or the children. The stereotype that only men are sexual perpetrators is a myth; women are equally dangerous. The abuser often abuses. It is a vicious cycle of perpetration. The child stores the traumatic memory and once the child is an adult with children of his or her own, abuse is an automatic reaction that is triggered. Adults who were abused as children need to speak about their experience in order to divert from this cycle. Do not try to do your own investigation of the abuse. If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, report it to the police, the Department of Social Development or your nearest designated protection organisation. You can approach the Department of Social Development; phone the police helpline on 10111; contact the Alberton Child Welfare organisation on 011 907 3004/5 or 083 367 5843, or phone Elmarie Pretorius from PSARU on 0860 287 223 or e-mail her at elmarie@psaru.co.za to report a case or to find out more about trauma counselling.

‘Kinderverkragter verdeel familie’ – correction tame TIMES would like to apologise to Elmarie Pretorius from the People Search and Rescue Unit for exposing her name as a source in the article ‘Kinderverkragter verdeel familie’ that was published last week. We spoke to her for general information regarding cases like these and there was a misunderstanding regarding attributing the information for this case to her.

Pretorius writes many articles regarding child protection and children’s rights and there was just a misunderstanding regarding where to attribute to her and where not. Pretorius spoke about this specific case as she is involved in it, but she meant to demonstrate the larger situation and never wanted to exploit anyone involved in the case.

Battle over streets

Now we wait to vote The last voter’s registration weekend is done and dusted, and the fifth national general elections will be held on 7 May. What do South Africans do up until Election Day? For people who have already made up their mind who they will be voting for, they will watch how political parties campaign in order to gain votes; and those who are still undecided will use these election campaigns to help them make their choice.

According to Provincial Electoral Officer (PEO) of IEC Mr Masego Sheburi the commission had determined a target of 1,1 new registrations to achieve an organisation wide 80% enrolment of eligible voters. Below is the breakdown of the Gauteng results: × Organisationally IEC have surpassed the target with a registration figure of 1 259 500. × Gauteng has contributed 339 728 new registrations out of total activity of 815 692 during the past weekend. × This represents 26,13% contribution to the national registration figure.

× Consistent with a youthful campaign, the majority of new registrations are persons aged 16-29 years of age. The registration for this age cohort is 257 985. × While IEC fell short of reaching the 80% registration target as a province, they have nonetheless surpassed the psychological 6 million mark in that the provincial segment of the voters roll. They retain their position as the biggest voting bloc. × An important area of performance is that they availed convenient opportunities to voters to check and update their registration details. In this regard 437 604 persons have updated their details by re-registering in different Voting Districts. × An already entrenched trend of there being more females than males on the voters roll perpetuates with 51% of new registrations being by female voters. Please note, for the South Africans who have not registered yet, you have until 7 May is proclaimed and Gazetted to visit IEC or municipal offices to register.

Zille and DA have lost the plot

Clr Izak Berg (National Chairperson of the Independent Ratepayers Association of SA) writes: First it was the turn-around by the DA on BEE, followed by the disaster with AGANG and now the march in Johannesburg. What did she think by organising this march? There could only be one loser, the DA - and did they lose this round by a knock-out. There are many other means of showing muzzle and the disapproval with the ruling party than to march through the streets of Johannesburg, resulting in businesses to close in fear of political violence, costing these businesses an arm and leg in revenues for the day (which can lead to job losses, not job creation). Rather fill a stadium with your supporters than having them running around in the city for cover. One needs to ask who are her advisers, or

is it a fact that once she has put her mind on something then hell with her supporters and followers? Politics is not kindergarten Helen. These actions have left all DA supporters with egg on their faces, as one of their own councillors has put it. Is there a leader in the DA to stand up against Zille and called for her head after these disasters? I don’t think so. The fact that Zille and the DA has requested a leader from another party to be their Presidential Candidate in the upcoming elections (which backfired), shows that Zille has no confidence in the current leaders of the DA. How can she and the DA then expect the voters to have confidence in the DA and their leadership?

ANC supporters arrived heavily armed to protect their Headquarters. The DA in Gauteng embarked on a protest march on Wednesday 12 February. The march, which was the party’s expression of concern over the Government’s promise of 6 million jobs, was planned to follow a route from the Westgate Ria-Vaya bus station (Johannesburg) down to Sauer Street, where the ANC’s Headquarters are situated (Luthuli House). The Democratic Alliance’s march, according to JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, was legal as of an application made on 13 January and SAPS and JMPD officers were prepared to have their hands full, anticipating clashes with ANC supporters. The situation became increasingly hostile when scores of ANC supporters arrived to meet the DA on route to Beyers Naude Square, which was the eventual ending point as Luthuli House became a dangerous

prospect. The two groups were closely guarded by police and all measures to avoid physical clashes were put in place. Although no reports of injuries surfaced, a few ANC supporters were arrested for public violence. The police had to fire teargas into the crowds and eventually DA leadership opted to call the march off before any memorandum was delivered. While the ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu denied violence from ANC supporters, DA leaders Mmusi Maimane and Helen Zille gave statements accusing the ruling party of intolerance and violence, which are signs of disrespect towards the Constitution. Send us your views on this story as a Citizen Journalist and stand a chance to win with Bundi (See competitions page).

Reader advocates stronger opposition Makgopa Gareth Setati writes:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is continuously letting the democratic project down, and at this rate the moment may be nearing for an official alternative opposition to replace them. If it is not an epic political fumble like last week’s Agang shenanigan, then it’s the provocative marching to Luthuli House, despite the scores of injuries that occurred two years ago when they pulled a similar stunt at COSATU House. The DA’s behaviour is tattletale of the general poverty of opposition politics in South Africa. Democracies are observed to function better when there is a strong and viable opposition, petty politicking for the sake of electioneering and the appeal to populism to solicit the liberal media’s attention are all attempts to remove the spotlight from their lack of creative and substantive contribution to resolving the current deadlocks that our society faces.

The DA, and all other opposition parties, “in defence of democracy”, must shake off this cheap populist politicking, and instead stick to principled politics, contest and march for substantive national issues such as the matter of transparency in party political funding, for example. If there is ever a wish to contest government policies, there are channels for the DA to challenge this. They can march to the Union Buildings. What sense is there in launching a risky provocative protest march against a relatively unchanged manifesto of another political party? Is it the desperations of election season? In the final analysis, for as long as opposition politics is characterised by this chronic lack of substance, and an acute propensity to be guided by populism and pettiness around election season, our democratic project will remain in its infancy.

Pregnancy awareness week

EAGER TO EDUCATE: Nurse Carin Hanekom and dietician Candice Lawrence. Monday 10 February marked the start of National Pregnancy Awareness Week. The purpose of this week is for moms-tobe to have the opportunity to find out more about a healthy pregnancy at their local hospitals. The Netcare Clinton Hospital held an information session in the maternity ward, where interested pregnant women could come for advice on how to manage their changing bodies, what diet to follow to ensure that the baby is healthy and what to expect during and just after labour. All the ladies also received pregnancy magazines and little goodies, like dummies, to store for the big day. Nurse Carin Hanekom, who works in the lactation ward, and dietician Candice Lawrence eagerly answered every lady’s questions to ensure that they left the hospital well-informed. “It is very important to eat healthy during pregnancy. You can develop pregnancy-related diabetes if you do not eat correctly,” warned Lawrence, who did a presentation on a healthy diet during pregnancy. Hanekom explained how to breastfeed correctly and she emphasised the importance of including the father in the pregnancy experience, so that the mom has support and to allow the baby to bond with both parents. NUTRIENTS NEEDED: Pregnancy nutrition; important nutrients to consume during pregnancy: - Folic Acid - for healthy brain and spine development - Essential fatty acids (such as Omega-3) builds healthy brain cells - Calcium - for bone and teeth development - Iron - ensures a healthy placenta and helps the baby to build his/her own store to prevent anaemia during the first six months - Water - necessary for growing cells and for breast milk production - Calories - for the baby’s brain to grow healthily - Also remember that it is natural and healthy to gain weight during pregnancy; an average weight gain of approximately 13.6 kg is recommended.

Styling hair

according to your hair-type Hairstylists are always warning their clients to use products that are ideal for your specific hair type. However, what are the main hair types and how must one treat and style each one? tame TIMES spoke to local hairstylists and got a few tips: Main hair types and how to style each: Curly: after shampooing and conditioning the hair, use a good curling cream to lock the curls in. Scrunch-dry the hair with a towel and off you go! Curly hair is ideal for a wash-and-wear style. Tip: do not touch or brush the curls once they are dry, because it will get fluffy and frizzy. If you frequently straighten your hair to get rid of curls, use a proper heat-protective spray or lotion that protects the hair against flat irons as hot as 230 to 260°C. Straight: the biggest challenge with straight hair is its inability to hold a style. Use a styling aid, such as hair

spray, a strong mousse and a curlingtong to add body and bounce to flatstraight hair. Tip: hair sprays have different levels of strength, but we usually categorise them into two categories: hard hold and soft hold hair spray. Use hard hold when you want your hair style to last very long. Hard hold is ideal for matric farewell dances or fancy functions and if your hair is in a style that it does not naturally take. Use soft hold hair spray on a normal day to support your hair style and to keep a natural look. This is also ideal for ladies who frequently touch their hair. Hard hold tends to make the hair look hard. Course: this hair type is naturally very dry and frizzy; it is therefore important to use products that moisturise the hair to make it look silkier. Tip: use hair treatments or masks when your hair feels as if it has been compromised by too much dye.

Fine: this hair type is usually very limp and in desperate need of body and volume. To style, use the same advice given under straight hair, but remember that fine hair can break more easily. If your hair is fine and you dye it frequently, the chemicals can compromise the protein in the hair. Elastic bands that are too tight can also break fine hair easily. Tip: the more damaged and dull your hair feels and looks, the more you need to cut it. Overall, make sure to cut your hair every time your style grows out.

Valentine’s Day in the clouds

Miller Boomtown brings the Boom

BEWITCHING COLOURS: The wheel beautifully lit up at night.

Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com

Imagine sitting next to your loved one with a glass of champagne, overlooking the glittering lights of the Johannesburg skyline from 55m up in the air. On Friday 14 February, Gold Reef City re-opened their magnificent Big Wheel and gave couples the opportunity to experience it together for Valentine’s Day. Gold Reef City’s Big Wheel was sent to Holland, where it was made, by ship for nine months to have it serviced and repaired. It has now been re-erected and re-opened to the public, and the Gold Reef City VIP guests and media were the lucky ones who had the honour to experience it first. All the guests received chocolates and champagne to enjoy on their Big Wheel ride, while romantic music played in the background. Afterwards there was a buffet and a chocolate fountain to enjoy. When it got dark, the wheel was beautifully lit and changed colour from pink, red, green, blue, and purple, to yellow. The wheel might seem less intimidating and less nerve-racking than the other rides at the theme park, such as The Anaconda or Tower of Terror, but the moment one’s cart slowly creeps up and stops at the top of the wheel, it is enough to make even the bravest people quiver. It is a majestic structure that quietly demands respect and offers a beautiful perspective on Johannesburg, as it turns slowly enough for you to cherish every moment of your experience up in the sky.

BREATHTAKING VIEW: The beautiful Johannesburg skyline as seen from the top of the Big Wheel.

Miller Boomtown promised and they delivered. Hip-Hop alum Kendrick Lamar along with SAMA winner Khuli Chana, Reason and Miller Marketing Manager Carmen Hobbs gave media the rundown of the event at a Miller Boomtown Press Conference at the Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst on 8 February. Carmen Hobbs expressed Millers’ devoted interest in Hip-Hip in South Africa and internationally, and just how much Miller is excited to have a heavyweight act such as Kendrick Lamar, due to his stamp of approval in the Hip-Hop world. Carmen shared that the concert in Johannesburg was sold out, with Johannesburg Stadium filled with 12 000 fans and this was just one of many steps to showcase Hip-Hop and what it has to offer.

She teased that we should look out for something big towards the end of the year. Khuli Chana mentioned that the show will be different and that he will give it his all. Reason was humble at being part of an international act, and to perform for such a huge crowd. Hot off the heels of his concert in Durban and a ground-breaking Grammy performance with Imagine Dragons; Kendrick Lamar shared his reasons behind his international hit “Swimming Pools, Drank” and how he keeps himself relevant - by staying devoted to what he does. Future collaborations he would love to have are with acts such as Nas and Erica Badu. Kendrick Lamar ended with his inspiration for his latest album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, sharing his experiences growing up in Compton, the situations he found himself in, and becoming a man. For more on Kendrick Lamar, see a video on www.tametimes.co.za.

1ste: Christiaan Bruwer (Randhart), 2de: FC Kotzé (Randhart), 3de: Frohan Henning (Orion)

On 18 January, a panel of 5 people sat down to interview a very nervous group of candidates for the prestigious Peermont Education Trust scholarship; they selected 8 promising young people for the full scholarship, all from Ekurhuleni. In addition to having their fees paid, these lucky students will also benefit from the support of the Peermont team in the form of mentorship and coaching as well as workshops. Together all the service providers ensure that the students have the very best advantage and this is what enables the Trust to maintain an 85% pass rate. The students will be mentored by the Trust Administrator, Jenny Findlay. “This is the

critical difference that the Trust bursary offers and it is extremely important for young people that come from disadvantaged communities. By meeting with the students monthly, problems are identified early and assistance can be offered.” “I would like to run a big corporation someday, be an influential member of the public and have an input in economic policies that are being drawn up. This will help me achieve my goal of effecting change in South Arica and steering the country in a direction that I see as best for all. I look forward to eliminating barriers and breaking marginalisation,” notes a scholarship awardee, Lesedi Molaba - B.Sc. Actuarial Science - Wits.

Alberton High rewards Dinamika top presteerder vereer their academic achievers On Thursday 13 February, Alberton High School held their academic awards evening, where they handed out trophies and certificates of merit to all the grade 8 to matric learners who excelled academically at the end of last year. The teachers presented the achievers with bronze, silver and gold medals and certificates; there were also trophies for the best subject

achievers and the top learners also received money vouchers and academic scrolls for their hard work. The evening was not only a proud one for parents and children, but also for the teachers, who wore their graduate robes on stage and enthusiastically applauded for each of their learners. The principal, Mr Minnie, congratulated the matric class of 2013 for securing Alberton High the

spot as the top school in Ekurhuleni. He thanked his staff for each of their learners’ achievements, and said that they make him a proud stakeholder of Alberton High. Mr Minnie concluded his address with the topics: determination and perseverance. He gave the learners the following advice for the year ahead: “Make every day a masterpiece. You are the architect of your own future.”

NekNomination hits the SPCA

Make the most of World Spay Day World Spay Day is traditionally the last Tuesday in February each year. This year, Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg will be celebrating this important day on 25 February and they invite their welfare clients to visit them before the date to book their animals for a free sterilisation on the day. The following conditions apply: - You are an existing hospital client - Your animal is vaccinated up to date and is checked by the vet at the normal consultation fee, before 22 February - Animals must be healthy and under 1 years of age and free of disease, not pregnant, on heat, with only one testicle or suffering from any pathology of the reproductive tract - Only 1 sterilisation per family is allowed - Only 20 places are available on a first come first served basis, if the conditions have been met - The veterinarian will make the final decision about bookings. Sterilisation ensures that pets live longer, healthier

lives and make better pets. It helps to reduce the risk of disease (e.g. mammary tumours, uterine infections), decreases aggression and reduces the number of unwanted animals born that end up in shelters or are given away to unsuitable homes where the problem of unsterilised animals will be continued. Sterilisation makes good financial sense too, as money does not need to be spent feeding more animals than one can afford. AACL invite their hospital clients (those needing welfare assistance), to visit them in the consulting hours: Monday-Friday 09:00-11:00 and 13:00-15:30, Saturday 08:30-11:00. The standard consultation and vaccination fees will apply. For more information contact Sr Cindy Price on 011 435 0672.

NekNomination originated in Australia and is the latest craze whereby you consume alcohol in one go on camera and then nominate a friend to do likewise. When South African Brent Lindeque was challenged, he decided South Africans could do it better and bought food and drink for a homeless man. Brent said at the time, “I’ve decided to create something positive out of the random global phenomena of NekNominations.” Tamlyn van Tonder’s church, Crossroads, decided to challenge their members and when it was Tamlyn’s turn she opted to give food to Alberton SPCA. Tamlyn is a 21-year-old university student and her generosity was gratefully received. As Tamlyn said, “I wanted to spread the love as I have a soft spot for all animals and love them dearly; I decided Alberton SPCA would be a worthy recipient.” Alberton SPCA was delighted with the donation and sends a big thank you to Tamlyn. They now challenge others in the community to get involved,

whether by donating dog and cat food, cat litter, dog, puppies and cat tick/flea powder, collars and leashes, A4 paper, postage stamps, A4 laminating pouches, to name a few of our needs. You can drop donations there too, including any 5 cent coins (or other denominations) you may have.

Chief Instructor at Bul Pae Academy, Sabum Michelle Rahl is proud to share the success of her youngest students who have now been graded as the Academy’s youngest SA-ITF SA Belts. Bosabum Jarren Downward (9), Bosabum Zach Nicolis (9) and Bosabum Liam Du Plessis (9) all started Taekwon-Do at the age of 4 years old. Bosabum Keyin Kroukamp (11) started at 7 years old. All the Bul Pae Academy young stars have been competing since they started and are mainly gold medal holders in their respective categories. Their grading consisted of a written exam for 40 minutes, where the average mark was 79%. The rest of their grading took almost 2

hours. Sabum Michelle Rahl explains that the young stars’ dedication to Taekwon-Do is amazing and bares visible fruits, not only in the dojang, but also at school and their lives.

No more sleeping for the Lions Jéan de Witt 011 862 8500 Marnitz Boshoff was able to overcome massive pressure to put a drop goal between the posts, giving his team a one point lead to end the game with a score of 21-20 It was a proud day for faithful Lions supporters this past Saturday, when their team made a triumphant return to Super Rugby by beating the Cheetahs on their home ground. The well-deserved man of the match recipient, Marnitz Boshoff drew first blood in the opening minutes of the game, through a converted penalty kick. The Cheetahs followed suit shortly after, while adding the opening try for the competition, scored by winger Raymond Rhule. Despite this setback, the Lions kept their cool and patiently crept their way back to a half time score of 10-9 to the Cheetahs home side. Less than ten minutes into the second half, the Cheetahs managed to cross the try line once again. Boshoff, despite suffering a dangerous tackle

that resulted in a yellow card against the Cheetahs, continued his stalwart performance by converting two more penalties. The home side converted a penalty of their own, putting the Lions at a two point deficit nearing the close of the match. A penalty against the Lions right in front of the posts seemed like it might be the final blow to put victory beyond the Johannesburg team’s reach. The Cheetahs’ Elgar Watts rushed the kick and ultimately missed, leaving a very slim sliver of hope for the Lions team. With but a minute remaining, Marnitz Boshoff was able to overcome massive pressure to put a drop goal between the posts, giving his team a one point lead to end the game with a score of 21-20, ensuring that everyone knows - the FIRST GAME WIN: Marnitz Boshoff was the man of the match recipient. Lions are back!

South Africa’s Stacy Lee Bregman tied for third with Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters, where American Cheyenne Woods captured her first pro title with a two shot victory at RACV Royal Pines Resort in Queensland. Bregman dropped two shots on her outward nine, but eliminated the damage with gains at the 14th, 16th and 18th holes to close with a 72. Lennarth, meanwhile, came home in three under 69 to join Bregman on 12-under-par 280. The pair finished four shots behind Woods, who held off a spirited charge from Australian amateur Minjee Lee and claimed the glory with a final round 69. Bregman had a solid 2013 and the joint third finish following closely on a top 15 placing at the season-opening in New Zealand. The fast start has shot Bregman to second in the rankings and bodes well for the Johannesburg pro, who is chasing a first win in her eighth season on the Ladies European Tour. Fellow South African Ashleigh Simon was at the lower end of the leaderboard after an opening 74, but showed that she is shaking

the rest of the festive period off with a final round 70 to tie for 39th on with compatriot, former LET number one Lee-Anne Pace, among others. Pace closed with a 72.
