Verjaarsdagvieringe by Laerskool Randhart.

Occupational Health and Safety is a healthy decision With only 5% of the matriculates having been accepted into university this year, completing short courses or a part-time certificate in Health and Safety could not only change the future of aspiring learner’s, it can also make a meaningful impact on the lives of many others. Some shocking statistics were released at the start of the new production year by the Department of Labour. Over 24% of the SA labour force is currently unemployed while, on the other hand, 160 000 incidents and accidents were reported in workplaces in SA last year. Christopher Guy of Makrosafe agrees with analyst’s observations which reveal many people are jobless because their education no longer meets industry requirements, but says that everything is in place to have this changed. “Makrosafe was recently informed that it’s Health and Safety Certificate course is now fully recognised by the Health and Welfare SETA,” he says. “Ever since, we have received much interest in this course, as it is divided into six different modules for which classes can be attended on a part time basis. And to accommodate learners even more, we bring the classes to the student’s region, instead of expecting them to come to our facilities,” he adds. No basic understanding required The course has been put together with the objective to take a ‘lay-man-off-the-street’ and train him or her up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. Learners are updated about things like legislation, health and safety principles, risk assessment, inspections, health and safety functions, implementation and evaluation of health and safety programmes, and in groups of 10 there is ample time to go through the material, or to have things discussed. It is Makrosafe’s mandate to enhance the quality of training in the industry. Learners who have completed the course are assured that their certificate is accepted by the industry. Accreditation by HWSETA demands that systems have to be in place, quality standards have to be met and investment in learning material as well as assessors and moderators were made.
Divinity through
Humanity
By Nieto Hernandez
There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land Det:15:11. There will always be poor people in the land - as much as this statement sounds condemning and negative, I see its outcomes or its promised results as necessarily humanising. That having been said I must add this disclaimer: I do not subscribe to the type of poverty that is purposefully imposed on people for the gains of others. The poverty I think the scripture refers to is the type which should prompt one to execute divinity through humanity. Goodness centres most, if not all, of Earths beliefs. So whether one believes in God, Allah, Shembe, Krishna or any other deity, the abovementioned scripture calls on humanity to fulfil or execute that divine attribute. I was prompted to comment on what I’m now spotting as a trend, the aloofness towards the plight of the poor. In many instances things are even made easy for us. Giving can be done through charity organisations, or through corporate initiatives such as KFC’s add Hope campaign or even the beggar at the traffic light. Debate is always going to be sparked over the correctness or incorrectness of the method used in giving, but consider this: we are blessed to be a blessing and you may be the only hope someone experiences. So while we are locked in endless debate, we miss out on playing our part in divinity’s plan to penetrate the hearts of humanity. Let’s chat. I know many opinions exist regarding this week’s topic so let me hear them at voice@tametimes. co.za or drop me a tweet @NietoVoice.

A note from the editor Come support our home club, who will be participants in The tame TIMES Golden Lions Alberton Rugby Sevens Tournament
By Ndu Ngwenya
Stormers team. I must admit, I was sceptic about Saturday night’s game, but my faith was quickly restored. The Lions have their foot firmly on the accelerator. That just makes me think how fickle we are as human beings. We will love you when things are good and ridicule or lose hope when things go pear-shaped, or maybe that’s just me. Still, on rugby, I hope I’ll be meeting a lot of you this coming weekend at the A Square Forklift Rugby Club. Come support our home club, who will be participants in The tame TIMES Golden Lions Alberton Rugby Sevens Tournament. Come out and enjoy the social atmosphere, which the folk at the club have prepared for us. On successes, we as tame TIMES would like to congratulate Laerskool Randhart on their 40th year anniversary and wish the school and its staff and learners all the best as for the coming milestones. We look forward to the next 40 years.
Mall of the South: coming soon Many residents of the South want to know more about the proposed Mall of the South that will be situated on the corner of Swartkoppies and Kliprivier Road. tame TIMES spoke to Waldo Marcus of Zenprop Property Developments. Marcus explained that a special media launch is being planned for the end of April. “We want to keep the suspense a little and therefore we are only sharing a little generic information regarding the development. At the media launch we will share renderings, tenants that have signed up and take media through the details of the development and what we have in store that will make this a very unique shopping experience.” Marcus did however say that Mall of the South will be aimed towards the high-end shopper living in the Southern Suburbs of Johannesburg. “It will have ample parking that is very easy to navigate, with direct access into the retail levels. We expect completion towards the latter part of 2015. “ With regards to leasing opportunities, this will be communicated to the community after the media launch.

Comment: Body found in dustbin Reader writes: I would like to mention that the Alberton Crime Intelligence received information regarding the man whose body was dumped in a dustbin, and left in the parking area in front of Home Affairs last Monday, from a member of the public. When officers of Alberton Police Station arrived at the scene there was a crime reaction vehicle already present. The officer informed them that the white male was deceased and that he was stabbed several times with an unknown object. When the officers arrived at the address the vehicle was registered to they found a bloodstain in the garage. After further investigation they found a blood-stained
Warning to businesses Local businessman Manie Van Vuuren, of Sha-Mani lodge, has over the past four months been engaged in a tiresome battle to recover funds from a nonpaying client. The struggle began several weeks before, on 30 November 2013, the date of an event organised by Juanita van der Westhuizen, and has to date seen the businessman resorting to pricey legal processes in pursuit of a solution. According to Manie, who is in possession of a dossier full of correspondences between Sha-Mani and the client, alarms started ringing when Van der Westhuizen neglected to pay the balance for the booking of the venue. “Ms Van der Westhuizen was required, by contract, to settle the balance for her booking three weeks before the date of the event. All we ever received from her was a deposit of R2500, so as a result I instructed my staff to bar entrance into the venue,” said van Vuuren.
Manie explains that the event eventually took place after Juanita and several other parties pleaded and even signed an agreement binding them to pay the R18 342.85 balance via an electronic transfer on that same day. When that did not happen more arrangements were made with the client, including an arrangement to make the payment in two months. “In my opinion Ms Van der Westhuizen had no intentions to pay, how could she make a booking well aware of the costs and knowing her financial standing, promise to pay, then all of a sudden have unfathomable money problems. We have all the documentation in place and are going to fight this even if it is just for the principle, but our experience should serve as a warning to other businesses,” said Manie According to Manie, currently Van der Westhuizen is no longer answering her phone and showing no intention to honour any of the made agreements.
knife, wrapped in a refuse bag, at the back of another bakkie. The officers cordoned off the crime scene, where it was suspected that the man had been murdered and contacted forensics from Mondeor. Proper investigation was done at the home in Bassonia and sufficient evidence was gained to indicate that the man had indeed been murdered at the home. Two people have already been arrested, including the deceased’s wife. The second suspect arrested is a man and a third suspect is expected to be arrested soon. I just want to thank the four officers from Alberton North SAPS that did this magnificent job in but a day.
tame TIMES update: A third suspect (31) was arrested in South Hills yesterday morning for the murder of Paul Ferriera. He is believed to be the female suspect’s brother who is the wife of the deceased. The first two suspects(wife and other man) who were arrested shortly after the murder were both denied bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.

Take up the calling The inaugural Johannesburg Mighty Men Conference will take place from 7-9 March 2014 and all men from age 12 are invited to be a part it. In 2009 and 2010 Angus Buchan said that the Mighty Men Conferences will be held all over South Africa and will not be arranged by Shalom Ministries anymore. During the last 3 years Oom Angus started “handing over the baton” to a few guys. In Gauteng it was handed over to Victor Lemmer, visionary leader of Summit of God Ministries. Although Angus Buchan confirmed that he will not be attending any Mighty Men Conferences in South Africa this year, he is confident that God will enable the current leaders to make a success of the conferences. “We must realise that the Mighty Men Conference is not about any man, it is about God and if anyone goes to the Mighty Men Conference for Angus Buchan he is going
for the wrong reason,” Angus said during a meeting held on 8 July 2013. The message for the Johannesburg conference will be: Taking up the responsibility of being the Prophet, Priest and King of your family and your home. “We believe that all men are called to attend this conference. It doesn’t matter what race you are or which church you belong to. Non-church goers are most welcome. We also believe that even if you know God and follow Him, He might need you there to mentor the guy next to you.” Tickets are very limited and you are urged to buy a ticket as soon as possible. With the health and safety rules in this area and the fact that they do not have open farms, they are very limited on tickets.

SAB moulding young entrepreneurs
Dr Vincent Maphai, Millicent Nyembe (recipient of R200 000 business grant), Boipelo Nkadimeng (SAB ED Manager) and Anda Maqanda (2013 KickStart overall winner). The South African Breweries (SAB) youth entrepreneurship development programme, SAB KickStart, at a breakfast meeting held at the SAB World of Beer (Johannesburg) on 18 February, selected its Top 18 National Finalists for 2014. The finalists, chosen by an independent panel of adjudicators based on a criterion of growth, sustainability, character and industry, each received a business grant of between R100 000 and R200 000, as well as business development support over a 12-month period. SAB KickStart, which was established in 1995, is focused on developing

and supporting sustainable youthowned businesses, as well as high impact entrepreneurs who are able to make a contribution to South Africa’s job creation needs. “It is important that big business in South Africa use their resources, experience and knowledge to help small business become sustainable and strong contributors towards the country’s economy. This means investing more than just capital but offering the support and guidance needed to carry these businesses through to success,” says Boipelo Nkadimeng, SAB acting Head Enterprise Development and Community Partnerships.
Solidariteit Helpende Hand
One of the top 18 finalists, Marcia Mofokeng from Katlehong, received a business grant of R130 000 to assist with the growth of her aluminium manufacturing business. Marcia currently employs one person in her business, which was established in 2011. Her company manufactures window, sliding and shop-front doors in accordance with design specifications of her customers. The next step in the program will be the announcement of the final top three winners, who will be awarded additional grant funding for their businesses later this year during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Getting to know Mr SA How is your child’s vision? The date has been set for the Win a date with Mr South Africa competition. On 6 March, the lucky winner will be treated to a dinner sponsored by Thaba Ya Batswana, a limousine ride courtesy of Supreme Limos, flowers from On
tT- Are you excited about the night? John: I am intrigued and interested to spend a time with someone from the public to find out their views on Mr SA and maybe see where I can include the public more to strengthen the brand. tT- Please share your worst date experience John: I would definitely say it’s a date where there is nothing in common. I have had a few of those. The whole night is planned and from the offset there is a clash of personalities. Nothing worse than spending the entire night on a date and both parties would rather be at the dentist.
Time Arrangements and a great night of conversation and getting to know John Owens, Mr South Africa 2013. tame TIMES caught up with the hunk of a man to hear about his experiences, including his worst date. tT- What is your best pick up line? John: To be honest I do not believe in pickup lines and I have never used them. I rather believe to be honest and direct without any tricks. But I can share one that I recently saw my cousin use. A guy takes his phone and goes up to the table where a girl that he is interested in sits (this is usually in a club or bar) and takes the light on the phone and acts as if he is looking for something under her table on the floor. Eventually the girl will ask him “what are you looking for” and he answers “your telephone number”. tT- What advice can you give when going on a first date? John: Do’s - Just be yourself, girls are very observant on the first date and they will see straight through fakeness. Don’ts - Don’t be mucho (girls see enough of that), don’t talk about yourself the whole night, rather her than you (believe me girls are way more interesting then men). tT- What is the first thing you are attracted to in a woman? John: Besides what she looks like, I would have to say the connection we have. People have to have an instant connection because beauty will fade.
When was the last time you had your child’s vision assessed? And we do not mean can they see on the black board or read, we mean monocular and binocular visual performance. In the past we screened many grade 8’s entering high school and found some alarming results. Last year we screened 306 children and here are some of the results: 10,4% of the children had visual acuity of below 6/6 (20/20); 7,2% of the children had monocular accommodation problems; 7,5% of the children had convergence problems; 18 out of the 306 children had very poor distance vision. The average reading age for the 306 grade 8’s were only slightly higher than that of a grade 6 child. As you can see a large number of children have some form of undetected eye problems. Early eye exams are important because children need the following basic skills related to good eyesight for learning: Near vision, Distance vision, Binocular (two eyes) coordination, Eye movement skills, Focusing skills, Peripheral awareness, Hand/eye coordination. Another alarming thing we see during these screenings is many of the children have
spectacles but do not wear them, mainly due to the following reasons: The frames are too small for them; They are shy or dislike their frames; Forgot them at home; The frames are broken. If your child has glasses or contact lenses, ensure that they wear them and are comfortable with them. Also have your child’s eyes tested at least once every two years to ensure good vision that could aid in improved school performance.

Don’t buy fauna and flora from street vendors Ivan Parkes, the Chairman Gauteng Conservancy and Stewardship Association was most disturbed to see Aloe marlothii being sold on the side of the road. This was seen on the corner of Voortrekker and Hennie Alberts Road in Alberton on 15 February. “We are pleading with people not to buy these plants as this is encouraging the destruction of our biodiversity. We suspect that these plants are being stripped from the veld in the Magaliesberg Biosphere,” Parkes
said. Aloe marlothii facts: Aloe marlothii’s national tree number is 29.5. It can grow 2 to 4m high but occasionally up to 6m or more. Flowering time from May to September, occurs in vast numbers and is not threatened. If this wanton removal of the indigenous plant caries on, though, they will become threatened. The plants that were seen could be between The Aloe that was seen being sold 50 and 100 years old. on a street corner in Alberton.

Hy verkies minimalisme in ‘n huis.

The flying squad recovered a Toyota Fortuner, while doing routine stop and search, which was stolen in Mpumalanga.

DEFENCE SPLITTING: Stefan Watermeyer finished off a move, which began in the Lions’ half, ending in the Lions’ only try for Saturday’s game. The Lions maintained their unbeaten Super Rugby run with a 34-10 win over the Stormers. The win over the Western Cape Stormers secured a second home victory for the Gauteng team. The Lions opened the scoring on Saturday night through Stefan Watermeyer early in the first half. Watermeyer’s try was converted by the Lions’ currently in-form
kicker Marnitz Boshoff. Boshoff, who is responsible for all 21 points that resulted in the Lions victory over the Cheetahs only a week ago, was again the reason for the smiles of many Lions fans as a result of his 6 penalties and 3 drop goals. The Lions victory did not come without a few low points. Two Lions players received yellow cards. Franco Mostert
and Julian Redelinghuys were handed yellow cards in the second half. This ill-discipline offered the Stormers, who were 22-7 down at the end of the first half, a chance to claw back into the game in the second. At the end of the game the Stormers only converted 3 points, which was no match for the Lions’ second half 12 points.

OFF THE PITCH
Who has the best job in cricket? I’m sure many of us have sat at home stuck on the couch, viewing ball-by-ball play and commented about field placing, or wondered aloud about certain selections or annoyingly criticised the preparation of the pitch. But through all of our passion as fans, what would be the best job in cricket? The coach has the unenviable task of steering the ship and trying to accumulate enough positive results so as not to find himself joining the football managers in the unemployment line. Alas the coaches, no matter how successful, are eventually judged, unfairly probably, on a series that does not go according to plan. Case in point is Andy Flower, who fell on his sword following England’s humiliation in Australia. The captain, responsible for team decisions and delivering on the coaches’ promises, as well as blending new and experienced players into formidable teams, is the second most important job in the game. What about umpiring? Stern faced older gentleman, reminiscent of old school headmasters, standing dutifully out on the cricket field making pinpoint and pressure decisions. Decisions that could have a bearing on the final results and players’ careers going forward into the 1st class arena. Is commentating the job? Often where ex-players criticise the new generation. A place where cricket becomes poetry and a simple single can be made to sound like a celebration. Especially on radio where descriptions are more vivid and poetic. What about bat-maker, now that’s a job in cricket isn’t it? Do you fancy the idea of spending days or weeks crafting out a bat for one of the world’s best? Starting with a solid block of willow and carving, planning and sanding that block to create a masterpiece that scores a hundred on debut? I think all of these jobs in cricket are worthy of consideration. We know from experience that some carry more burdens than others and some have higher expectations than others, but each is uniquely important to the game. After careful consideration and through research, I can now determine that I will stick to the one cricket job that I am very good at - that of spectator. It’s a safe job. No one will take it from me and no matter how often I fail there is always a job for me the next day. Indeed, I think it is the noblest job in all of cricket.
