Ontploffing by fabriek laat een ernstig beseer Stephanie Conradie

stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za

BESEER: Die beseerde man word in die helikopter gelaai

Volgens Dr Ivan Campbell,

algemene praktisyn by Clinicross in Alberton, is die MPV ‘n seksueel oordraagbare virus.

Man rewarded for donating over 130 litres of blood Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held their annual blood donor awards ceremony for Egoli East on Saturday 15 March, at Gold Reef City Casino. A total of 70 donors received milestone awards for their loyal contribution. Jacob Conradie, who started donating blood in 1962, was awarded for his impressive contribution of 137. 5 L. The awards were categorised into ten different donating milestones, which are calculated according to the amount of blood units that a donor has donated. A milestone is awarded for every 25 units of blood and one unit equals 500 ml of blood. All the donors who have donated 20 units of blood before the age of 25 received the Club 25 award, and further awards were given for every 25 units from the 50 milestone onwards. Conradie reached his 275 unit milestone this year, which took him 52 years to achieve. Conradie received the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek medal for his lifelong contribution. According to Delene Duncan, Egoli Zone Donor Services Manager, SANBS values every single donor’s contribution beyond words. The award ceremony is a way of thanking the community for their support and to remind them of how much they value

Duncan explained that it is important for them to reward their donors in some way to show them that their loyalty is much appreciated: “We must acknowledge our donors; we need loyal donors, as they are the safest donors. It motivates them [to continue donating],” Duncan said.

60 Years and still going strong On 1 April 1954, in Hendrik Potgieter Street, a Dutch couple unlocked the doors to what would end up being the largest Outdoor Store of its kind in Alberton. Wim Vunderink and his wife Truus, who had emigrated from Hengelo, Holland just 18 months earlier, started this Dutch delicatessen called Die Blou Meul. They built up a steady clientele and always delivered the best service to their patrons. After being in business for 5 months, it became clear that the store they had sold their sweets, cold meats and other food items in, had become too small and the Vunderinks expanded the shop to the open store next door. Within one weekend, Mr. Vunderink had broken down the wall and got the New and Bigger Die Blou Meul ready for business by Monday morning. In 1955, Mrs. Vunderink retired from the store and they became proud parents to a girl, Wilma in 1956. They later went on to have 3 more children, Hettie, Jaap and Paul. Alberton expanded and so, with the hard work and personal service, Die Blou Meul once again became too small. On 1 April 1956 Die Blou Meul opened its doors in what is now the Elderslie Building in Van Riebeeck Avenue. Mr. Vunderink realized that his friends, just like him, were keen hunters, fishermen and campers and it was there for just a question of time before a space was made in the store for fishing equipment. The “Angler’s Nook, as it was sometimes referred to, expanded by also stocking camping and sporting equipment. The new Alberton Sports Centre at Die Blou Meul devoured more and more space and soon it was clear that the food department, where it all started, was to be closed and the sporting and camping gear would get sole right on the premises. The premises in Elderslie (formerly Justra) Building had long been too small to meet the requirements of Alberton Sports Centre of Die Blou Meul and on 1 April 1965 Die Blou Meul moved to larger premises at 67 van Riebeeck Avenue. But, the reputation of Die Blou Meul was spreading. Every month brought new product and new customer demands. Alberton’s growth was also a factor. Again, space became a problem, and Wim Vunderink heard a rumor... The Reno Bioscope was closing, and he quickly acted on it... And on 1st April 1974 Die Blou Meul moved to its present home at 43 Van Riebeeck Avenue. In 1969 a young man named Calie Henning started working for Die Blou Meul. He was a hard worker and Mr. Vunderink taught him the ins and outs of the trade. He also married Mr. Vunderink’s eldest daughter, Wilma. When Die Blou Meul turned 21 in 1975, Mr. Vunderink gave over the reins to Calie Henning. Sadly, Mrs. Vunderink passed away in 1977 and Mr. Vunderink in 1979. For the next 15 years, Die Blou Meul was the organizing party of Die Blou Meul Kampeerskou, that was later replaced by Alberton Mardi Gras. Calie also bought Reno Bioscope in 1983 and by doing so, made this the permanent residence of Die Blou Meul. But Calie was not a man who could sit still and in 1992, he built an indoor shooting

range on the premises where clients would come for training and get acquired with the necessary skills it took to handle a firearm. In 1994, a buying group, called The Outdoorsman was born. This initiative was created in order to be able to purchase larger quantities of stock to compete with better prices of mass stores country wide. And it worked. Unfortunately in 1998, Calie and his wife, Wilma was in a horrific car accident, where Wilma was killed and Calie was very badly injured. After their daughter, Vicky returned from England and later their son, Jacques too, it was time for them to join the business. Calie had made a full recovery and later got married to Irene Hayward. Today Calie is enjoying the fruits of his hard work and not actively involved in the business anymore, but is extremely proud to say that his children have now taken over the best outdoor store in town. Vicky is handling the financial and administrative duties of the business along with her assistant Linda, and Jacques is living out his passion by actively being involved in all outdoor departments of the business. They too have big dreams for Die Blou Meul and along with their staff of 16 experts, believe it will be realized. The firearms and bow hunting departments have something of everything a hunter will need to get that trophy and have the perfect hunting trip. Even for the target shooter, all the equipment is readily available. Jaap, Hendrik and Lucas are keen hunters themselves and together have over 4 decades’ experience in the field. Piet has been working in out Indoor Shooting Range for the past 15 years. Here you can come, 7 days a week, to test out your new firearm, or just stay in practice and get Our camping department is up to date with all the latest gadgets and tents and accessories to make your camping and outdoor experience even more comfortable and enjoyable. Danie and Elliot do their best to assist with any gas queries and camping equipment requests. Fish also got smarter and with the new technology and tricks we have up our sleeves, you are sure to have a fruitful fishing trip. We supply our local schools with school wear and have also now acquired the right to sell the school uniform of a new school in Glenvista. We also have camouflage clothing and appropriate footwear for all types of outdoor activities. You will always be welcomed with a friendly smile from Margaret and Carol at our reception and cashiers desks. We would also like to invite new Albertonians and people from across the country, reading this, to come and say hello, or drop us a line or an e-mail. Alberton Home The disappointments and frustrations Affairs wasting water of being a councillor in this ANC run Sharron van Greunen writes: I was at Home Affairs in Alberton last A Councillor writes Metro weekend and the taps at the washbasins, It is now 9 months since the 2013/2014 budget was approved with the miserly sum of R 500 000.00 allotted for paving in the three Alberton Wards. Since then I have been asking, negotiating and begging for my portion of this amount in order to finish the paving in the Fore St park. To my total frustration, I have been given every excuse in the book, and the promises of speedy action all the way from the roads official to Asanda Mojova, the Senior Enginer and even the COO, have come to absolutely nothing. The paving is still not done and I wonder if this money will be spent before the end of the budget year. Then there is the saga of the R1mil per ward, Lungile Mtjali project which was announced by the Mayor, to great fanfare in June last year and rehashed various times. Well! Despite having been singled out and told that the project proposed by the Ward 37 Committee was one of the 3 projects which were accepted and having gone to all the trouble of preparing a detailed proposal and business plan, we are still waiting for any form of action and the year is almost over. At a meeting with the MMC Bennet Nikani and various officials, I and a member of my ward Committee were assured that there would be an on-site meeting and that this project would soon go ahead in Ward 37 but so far, once again, these seem to be empty promises. However there is always another trick up the Mayor’s sleeve and the latest is the approval

by Council of the EMM’s “CUSTOMER SERVICE CHARTER” which, amongst many other things, promises the following: In all our Customer Care Centres you will always be treated with courtesy. You will be received by informed and responsive staff. We will endeavor to answer 90% of your calls within 5 rings and acknowledge 90% of your email within 2 working days. We will keep records of complaints and ensure feedback on all concerns. We will apologize for any mistakes The residents and ratepayers also have the right to: Be treated with courtesy at all times Get prompt and efficient service Get accurate information regarding all aspects of the services provided by EMM Have a clean and safe environment Be consulted on service delivery matters The ratepayers of course also have certain obligations, e.g. Paying for their services and using them wisely Report service breakdowns immediately and utilizing municipal services effectively. Dear Mr Mayor, the promises you made during your budget speech have definitely not materialized. Will this Metro be in a position to implement the new “Charter” effectively. Let the residents of the Metro be the judges of that!

Sy was 3mnde swanger gewees.

We were never even welcomed by the captain. 95% of passengers were Indian heritage South Africans, as it was a Lotus fm cruise, but they only served beef and pork which Indians don’t eat. We were expecting a lovely Mutton curry, and then they served a dull mince curry. When we arrived at the Portugese Islands, everyone waited anxiously to get of the ship and enjoy the warm sun and lovely beach, but to our dissapointment they announced that we will not be getting of as the winds were too strong, we went up to the deck and felt it was only a little breeze. I would just like to warn people to do their homework before going on a MSC Cruise. Talk to other people and ask for their opinion first. Find out what their experiences were and make an informed decision. If you had a bad experience on the MSC Cruises, please write in and let us know.

CPF gives crime prevention tips:

Your alarm system

How often do we hear people complaining that their Security Company did not react when there was a break in at their premises? When we abide by the “audi alteram partem” rule – hear the other side, the Security Companies informed us that after investigating these allegations, they discovered that some “backyard technicians” were at “work”. It seems that when the house owners discussed their faulty alarm systems with friends and families, they receive ample offers to “fix” the problem – with the above as the consequence. This irregularity can cost you dearly when your insurance company refuses to refund your stolen goods. Therefore, don’t try to spare costs on maintaining and fixing your alarm systems – it can cost you dearly in the end!

CREATIVE PIGGY BANKS: The animal banks that Door of Hope are selling to raise funds for their new property. Another fabulous gathering of working women took place at Glenvista Country Club on 19 March. Toni Mackrell, founder of Women@ Work, once again tasted success and many women left feeling positive and ready to change their attitude. The theme was ‘Live, Love and Laugh’ and guest speaker, Debbie De Jager, a certified John Maxwell Coach, explained that in order to achieve these three valuable ingredients of life one has to have a good attitude. She added that attitude is an expression of what is happening inside of the person- their inward feelings. Her main emphasis was that a bad attitude affects the person who has it more

than anyone else. De Jager gave advice on how to change your attitude. She said you have to evaluate your present attitude by identifying wrong thinking, feelings, behaviour and clarify a positive attitude and commit and carry out your choice. Secondly you have to have an attitude of gratitude and one must write a statement of purpose and have a desire to change. The charity of choice was Door of Hope Children’s Mission. They are a Glenvista based home for abandoned babies and are giving children a second chance at life. Carmen Pretorius, the operations manager explained their new Piggy Bank project, where they sell beautiful animal shaped piggy banks, is to raise funds for another property. This property will be a children’s village where they will house toddlers who are waiting for adoption and children who are classified as unadoptable due to various ailments and conditions. Due to limited space in their current houses they have to turn away babies and with the adoption process taking much longer because of the new childcare act, babies are with them for much longer periods of time.

to perform at Carnival City

POLO FEVER: Finalists of Turffontein’s Triple Crown Competition can’t believe their luck, two more Polo Vivos are up for grabs, the next being 29 March at the Classic Carnival. Another 10 finalists will be drawn on 29 March at the second leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown; these finalists will be another step closer to driving home in a brand new Polo Vivo. Turffontein Racecourse plays host to the Classic Carnival which is expected to draw large crowds and sees numerous traditional carnival themed activities complimenting the top class South African horse racing. The growth in the Triple Crown series has been partly due to the organisers ensuring a variety of family focused activities, competitions with large prizes and mostly due to their decision of making access to the race course free of charge. Michael Varney, National Marketing Manager of Phumelela commented, “Each leg of the Triple Crown has been themed and after the success of the first leg which featured the Johannesburg Prawn Festival we are very excited about the Classic Carnival and of course the second of three Polo Vivos which we will be giving away”. Apart from enjoying the live entertainment, beer garden and Carnival atmosphere, by

simply being at the Big T race goers will be able to enter the competition to win one of the three Polo Vivos. From a racing perspective both the second legs of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and SASCOC Triple Crown will be run and first leg winners Arcetri Pink and Louis the King will be fighting it out in their respective fields to get a step closer to taking the Tiara or Crown title. Trainer Geoff Woodruff and jockey Robbie Fradd enjoyed huge success as the winning trainer and jockey of both these races and so the pressure must be mounting. The inter-provisional competitiveness will be rife when L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Cape Town Noir travels to Gauteng to compete for the Horse Chestnut Stakes only adding to the premium racing the day has to offer. Finally, this is also a special weekend for some of South Africa’s exported thoroughbreds who will be racing in the Dubai World Cup to be broadcast on a big screen for spectators to enjoy. Gates open at 11:00 and entry is free.

Mayor to reflect SASSA payment saga on progress

Ekurhukeni’s Executive Mayor; Clr Mondli Gungubele, will deliver his State of the City Address (SoCA) tomorrow (March 26) at the Germiston Civic Centre at 10am. “This is a speech in which the Executive Mayor shares with the people of Ekurhuleni progress made since the last local government elections in 2011, progress made in the present financial year and the way forward in terms of delivering on the mandate given to the city by the electorate two and a half years ago,” explains mayoral spokesman Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini says matters relating to job creation, poverty alleviation and inequality, and progress on strategic mayoral programmes such as the Aerotropolis, beautification of lakes and dams, the integrated public transport system and digital city will dominate the speech. He says matters relating to job creation, poverty alleviation and inequality, and progress on strategic mayoral programmes such as the Aerotropolis, beautification of lakes and dams, the integrated public transport system and digital city will dominate the speech. The public can expect that the speech will also reflect on achievements of the past 20 years of democracy. Although the Ekurhuleni Metro is only 13 years old, the region itself has been in existence as the East Rand for years. In actual fact it was at the World Trade Centre in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, where the Codesa which led to the birth of the new nonracial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa was held. “Obviously 20 years later we have a story to tell and the mayor will certainly do that,” Dlamini explains.

Pensioner Hendrik van Niekerk from Alberton has travelled to Timbuktu and back in an attempt to claim back outstanding pension money. Van Niekerk is still waiting for his back-pay of R7673, which, according to SASSA’s records, has been paid out in October 2013. Van Niekerk, however, never received the money. Van Niekerk applied for a pensioner’s grant at the South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Germiston in June last year. However, due to their systems being offline at the time, Van Niekerk only received his first payment three months later. According to Van Niekerk, SASSA explained to him last year that they had a backlog of administration and payments to which they were attending. They acknowledged that they were behind on his back-pay and assured him that they were aware of the situation. Van Niekerk has travelled to SASSA, Home Affairs and the Germiston City Hall pay point every month since November last year, but to no avail. He is either referred to another office, or he is told to wait until the end of the month. In addition, Van Niekerk suffers from Parkinson’s and he feels that it is unacceptable to expect him to go through so much effort for money that is rightfully his. “I feel that I am getting older; I am not able to do everything that I once could. It is unfair. They owe me this money,” Van Niekerk said. According to Priscilla Masemola, Grant Administration and Customer Care Consultant at SASSA, pensioners must collect a form at SASSA that shows that the back-pay money has been made available to the pensioner. The pensioner must then present the form at the pay point and request the money in cash. Masemola confirmed that Van Niekerk’s money has been allocated to him, according to SASSA’s database, and advised him to follow the above-mentioned steps. Masemola also advises first-time pensioners to collect their first payment at the pay point in cash, as the SASSA card might take a while to activate, which could cause further backlogs. Pensioners who do not draw their full pension before the 20th of each month may stand the chance of having a frozen account, as the SASSA office would assume that the money is not yet needed, or that the person may have passed away. This is also a possible reason why pensioners may not see money on their cards, even though it has been paid out. In this case, the same steps need to be followed as for back-pays. Masemola further explained that the delay was probably due to the massive backlog that SASSA has been battling with for the past three months. Masemola said that the Germiston branch is overwhelmed with social grant enquiries from various areas, such as Boksburg, Alberton and Kempton Park, either because those areas’ offices have closed, or because they only operate certain times. Masemola urges community members to request that a branch is opened in their area if they are unsatisfied with the speed and accuracy of SASSA’s services. For more information regarding back-pays and pension payments, contact the SASSA helpline on 011 776 8022.

Regular car maintenance critical as economy slows down vehicle sales Recent sales statistics show that people are holding onto their current vehicles for longer, and resisting the urge to buy a new set of wheels. According to the National Automobile Association of SA (Naamsa) South African vehicle sales dropped 3.1% in February compared to the same period last year, with new passenger car sales falling by 5.4%. “Following four successive years of growth in domestic new vehicle sales, prospects for this year would be affected by subdued economic growth, above average new vehicle price increases as a result of exchange rate weakness and upward pressure on interest rates,” the association said. This means the regular maintenance of motorists’ vehicles is more critical than ever, says Les Mc Master, Chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA.) “Regular maintenance is key to extending the life of your car, and will help you pick up smaller repairs early enough to prevent more serious faults occurring further down the line.” He advises motorists to keep a close eye on the car’s manual and schedule maintenance accordingly. “Even better, set a recurring reminder on your phone to alert you to get your vehicle checked annually. Keeping up with your car’s recommended maintenance schedule can help avoid costly problems with your cooling system, drive-train, suspension and other components.” Motorists should also ensure their car is serviced by a reputable workshop that only uses quality oil, fluids and parts. “Although at that moment it might sound like an attractive option to service your car for as cheaply as possible, the financial implications in the long run will outweigh the apparent short term benefit. It’s never wise to scrimp on your car’s maintenance costs.” In addition to regular maintenance there are a number of other things motorists can do to extend a car’s life. Motorists should regularly check the level of fluids in their vehicles, such as the antifreeze, oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid.

“Even if your car doesn’t leak fluids, it can develop a leak quite quickly which results in a dangerously low level of fluids. It’s also important to change the oil regularly as this will improve your mileage and protect your engine. To find the recommended mileage between oil changes check your vehicle’s service manual, and if still unsure consult with an accredited MIWA workshop. It’s important to change the oil filter as well - there is no sense in putting clean oil through a dirty filter, and filters are cheap and available at any parts store,” says Mc Master. He also advises motorists to monitor the thickness of their vehicle’s brake pad to prevent the pads from wearing down to metal. This will cause damage to the brake disks and possibly the callipers as well. It’s worth noting that disks and callipers are much more expensive to replace than pads. Another tip to make the brakes last longer, is to use the hand brake where possible, he says. “Even if you are driving a car with an automatic transmission, use your hand brake regularly, especially if you’re parked on an incline. It helps keep the brakes adjusted in the rear of the car and makes them last longer.” Furthermore, rotate your tyres often as it reduces uneven wear and tear on the tread, thus extending the life of the tyres too. Generally they should be rotated diagonally - front right to rear left and front left to rear right. “You also need to check your tyre pressure regularly. Proper tyre inflation will help the tyres handle better and last longer, and it will help you get the most out of a tank of petrol. It’s also a good idea to have your tyres regularly checked for wear.” But most of all, don’t ignore small problems. Pay close attention to a vehicle’s noises and also to its warning lights and even cosmetic things, like a piece of rubber trim that’s loose, he says. “Ignoring a problem only allows it to get worse, and parts for aging vehicles are often difficult to locate.” To find an accredited MIWA workshop near you, visit MIWA’s website at www.miwa.co.za

TB screening campaign

Non-profit organisation, Cotlands has begun a massive immunisation campaign that will see hundreds of children screened and treated for TB. As an organisation that puts the rights of children first, Cotlands has undertaken to assist government with a TB campaign, by screening children. Last week they focused on the following areas: Eldorado Park ext 3, Princess Mobile Toy Library site, Selby Mobile Toy Library site, MBV building ELG and Bellavista. Cotlands will be in the following areas this week. Contact Thabo on 011 683 7201 for more information or to make a booking. 26 March- City Deep Village from 8:30 to 10:30 27 March-South Hills from 9:00 to 11:00 What is TB? Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB primarily affects the lungs, but it can also affect organs in the central nervous system,

lymphatic system, and circulatory system among others. The disease was called “consumption” in the past because of the way it would consume infected people from within. When a person becomes infected with TB, the bacteria in the lungs multiply causing pneumonia; the patient experiences chest pain and has a persistent cough which often produces blood. In addition, lymph nodes near the heart and lungs become enlarged. As the bacteria try to spread to other parts of the body they are interrupted by the body’s immune system. The immune system forms scar tissue or fibrosis around the bacterium, which helps fight the infection and prevents it from spreading within the body and to other people. If the bacteria manage to break through the scar tissue the disease returns to an active state; pneumonia develops and there is possible damage to kidneys, bones, and the meninges that line the spinal cord and brain. TB is generally classified as being either latent or active. Latent TB - the bacteria are inactive but present in the body. The patient has no symptoms and is not contagious. Active TB - the bacteria are active and make the patient ill. Active TB is contagious. TB is a major cause of illness and death worldwide, especially in Africa and Asia. Each year the disease kills almost 2 million people. The disease is also prevalent among people with HIV/AIDS. *Information sourced from www. medicalnewstoday.com.

Yesteryear T20 Specialists I have watched the first week of the World T20; and wondered whether the top cricketer’s from the eighties and nineties would have adapted and competed with the top players of today in the shortest version of the game. I am convinced that the players from yesteryear would certainly have challenged the players from today. Going back twenty to thirty years, we were quite happy with cricket then and would have quite simply accepted the run rates on offer. As I mentioned in a previous article regarding One Day Cricket in the eighties, 30 runs off the first ten overs in a 50 over game was acceptable and a great start to say the least. The modern version of T20 Cricket has given a different thinking and approach towards the current 50 over game, including Test Cricket. Batsmen are continually improving on their strike rates; and who knows what will be a respectable start to a T20 game in the opening power play of the first six overs in the future, let alone Test an ODI Cricket. On average the last three or four over’s in a T20 game arguably now goes for 50 plus, but in time going forward, we could see twelve to fifteen an over in the first power play. Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Lance Klusener, Brian Lara, Mark Greatbatch; and Jonty Rhodes to name but a few, are my selection of players who would have matched this and won many games for their country. In an ideal world, it would be great to make comparisons but, alas it is not the case. Last week I mentioned how important it was to make sure that our top batsmen in the current World T20 faced as many over’s as possible; and again it proved costly in the Proteas loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday. We are now chasing the eight ball and I firmly believe that AB De Villiers and David Miller should open the Proteas batting. Food for thought.
