monica.supra@tametimes.co.za The Miss SA beauty pageant has introduced many fiercely intelligent and beautiful ambassadors to South Africa in the last 50 years. Shané Venter, a vibrant young lady from Alberton, entered this prestigious competition with great hopes of fulfilling her lifelong dream. She was chosen as one of the Top 25 semi-finalists for Miss South Africa 2016, which brings her just that one step closer to the reality of reigning as Miss South Africa. During Miss SA’s reign, she will represent South Africa at both the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants. There, she will be involved in promotional work and celebrity appearances. She will travel locally and abroad, meet dignitaries,
celebrities, the privileged, the underprivileged, the sick and the needy. That is the expectation today, as it has been growing steadily since Norma Vorster was crowned Miss SA in 1956. To become our country’s ultimate representative, Schané needs votes from the public. Let’s support our local girl by ‘liking’ and sharing her photo on Facebook and let everyone know how proud we are. We wish Schané the best of luck for her Miss SA 2016 journey and To vote for Schané Venter, search for her page on Facebook will keep our readers updated. and show your support. *Photo sourced from Facebook

SEABISCUIT?
My favourite month of the year has arrived. Not only because my birthday falls in October, but the weather is perfect outside, the spring smells reach their peak and of course, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a cause very close to my heart, and the October ‘’pink paper’’ is without a doubt my favourite concept. To start off, we have some information on the importance of mammograms, as well as risk factors on page 8. We also have information about the Breast Health Foundation as our organisation of the week. We had a terribly crazy week at the office, with the tame TIMES Community Cup now behind us for 2015. The annual fundraiser was a great success thanks to all our sponsors and players. You can see some of the photos on page 5, and visit our Facebook page to see some more of the action that took

place on t h e day. I was very excited to discover that we have our very own Miss South Africa 2016 finalist in Alberton. The lovely Schané Venter needs the community’s help to make her dream come true. We as a community can be proud to have such an outstanding young woman representing us. Make sure you check the front page again for details on how to vote for Schané. I would like to take this opportunity to send my sincerest condolences to one of our designers, Stephanie Els and her family. Her aunt sadly lost the battle against cancer last week. We are all thinking of you during this difficult time. We dedicate this newspaper to your aunt in loving memory.

Omtrent alle kleure is taboe. En alles met ‘n strepie, of kolletjie. Jy kies toe maar die dag ‘n valerige hemp en vat die pad. Wees so-en-so laat by die SABC, ons kry jou by die deur, het hulle gesê.
Alberton: WHAT A HISTORY
ALBERTON’S EQUINE CORNER:
NEWMARKET
Alberton’s first introduction to thoroughbred horses came courtesy of the Rothschild family, owners of the land where New Redruth was laid out in 1912. They built up the stud farm called ‘Redshield’ in the general area where Newmarket was later established. The agricultural holdings owe their existence directly to the establishment of the Newmarket Race Course in 1937. After the re-surveying of a part of New Redruth from agricultural to residential stands, there was a need for ground to accommodate the peripheral industries associated with racing. For many decades afterwards, it was the hub of the horse racing fraternity, with stables and training arenas lining the long streets. Lincoln Street forms the western boundary of the suburb. It was named after a now-defunct race course in Lincolnshire, England. Parallel to it runs Doncaster, the name of a race course in South Yorkshire, England. Ascot Road connects Lincoln Road to Heidelberg Road. Ascot is the name of a race course in Berkshire, England. Derby is the shortest street. A derby is a race for three-year-old horses, named after the Derby Stakes run at Epson Downs. Epsom Road again connects Lincoln Road and Heidelberg Road. Epsom

Downs is a race course in Surrey, England. Running into Garfield S t r e e t in Alrode, Goodwood Road commemorates a racecourse in Chichester, Sussex. The tiny suburb of Newmarket Park was proclaimed in 1974. The driving force behind it was Len Oats, owner and trainer of the horse Java, which won the Johannesburg Summer Handicap three years in a row from 1956 to 1958. That explains the first choice of the suburb name, Java Park, a suggestion that was rejected. The street names Leonard and Hanson were Len Oats’s Christian names. The other street is Elandsfontein Drive, the name of the original farm. For information on the Alberton Heritage Society, please call 011 869 9417 (BeverleyAnn Small). URGENT REQUEST FROM Primrose SAPS SUCCESSFUL ALBERTON SAPS ARRESTS
Alberton SAPS is requesting assistance from the community to help trace Mr August Cloete, who must appear at the Palm Ridge Court on an alleged two counts of murder that took place on 6 October 2014 in Pieter Uys Street in Alberton North. His last two known addresses were in Eden Park and Alberton North. After his case was removed from the court roll temporarily, Cloete moved away from
both known addresses without informing the investigating officer. The case was reinstated by the court and a summons was issued on 2 September 2015, but it cannot be served as the suspect has changed all his contact details and is nowhere to be found. It is believed that Mr Cloete might be around the Kimberley area. Anyone with information of his whereabouts should contact Sgt. Zakwe on 083 617 9037 or 011 865 7400.

TWO ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED CHILD TRAFFICKING It is alleged that a 27-year-old woman from Phumula sold her two-week-old child with the help of a friend. The father of the child was present, but unaware of what was going on. The two friends were allegedly using their phones to seal a deal with a third woman.
When the time came for the transaction to be finalised, the father was sent outside. While he was gone, the third woman took the child after paying R5 000. When the father returned, he was told that the child was stolen. The police were called and a docket of kidnapping opened. An investigation was
launched and it was later established that the child was sold by the mother. They found that the child, along with a buyer, was at the mother’s place of residence. When the police got there, the buyer was nowhere to be found. The child, however, was found with a man who was made to believe that the child
was his. A case of child trafficking was opened and two women were arrested. They appeared in the Palm Ridge Court on 29 September to answer to the alleged charges, while the third woman (buyer) is still at large. The child is currently residing with the father’s parents.

Keeping your dog’s and cat’s teeth cleaned is very important. After all, they can’t tell you they have a problem. In cats a mild ‘fishy’ smell is normal but anything over and above that indicates a serious problem. For dogs again, if their breath smells bad, it’s likely they too have a problem such as gum disease or tooth decay. You can buy special dog or cat toothpaste and brushes at any vet or pet shop. Never use human toothpaste on your pets. For dogs, chewing rawhide or special dental chews helps reduce the tartar buildup but ideally you should also brush their teeth regularly. Cats too can have dental treats but as with dogs these should not be a substitute for proper brushing. There are guidelines on the web on how to clean your pet’s teeth so it’s worth checking out - www.petmd.com or www. aspca.org. Obviously the earlier you
introduce your pet to having its teeth cleaned the better, but when it is combined with tasty treats most pets soon accept it. At least once a year you should take your pet to the vet for a full dental clean under anaesthetic because keeping their teeth in tip-top condition can reduce illness and make for a happier and healthier pet.

Organisation OF THE WEEK The Breast Health Foundation is a section 21 company that was established in April 2002 to educate the public on breast cancer, breast heath, and to increase breast cancer awareness and empower women. By educating South African women on breast health issues, the Breast Health Foundation facilitates a sharing of health education with their children, husbands and partners, other family members, as well as their wider circle of friends and associates. By putting paid to the many myths surrounding breast cancer, as well as providing an open forum where women can come forward with their problems, the Breast Health Foundation looks forward to earlier diagnoses and better survival rates. The Breast Health Foundation has a number of initiatives running throughout the year to raise awareness and knowledge of selfbreast examination techniques. Their educators are also available to speak at corporate functions and guide corporates on how to raise awareness in the workplace. When a person is diagnosed with breast cancer, they, as well as those close to them, experience trauma and shock. It’s enormously comforting and helpful to be able to talk to someone who has been through a similar ordeal. The Breast Health Foundation established Bosom Buddies in 2005 to provide information and emotional support to all those affected by breast cancer. The project is an integral part of their ‘’Breast Cancer Chain of Survival,’’ redefining perceptions of breast cancer and promoting a positive mindset of survival recovery and quality of life. The Breast Health Foundation exists solely on donations and project funding. Statistics show that one in 29 South African women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This figure is even higher in urban communities in South Africa, where the incidence is as high as one in eight. While these statistics are frightening, the good news is that more women are surviving a breast cancer diagnosis than 20 years ago, thanks to a combination of advanced medical treatment and most importantly of all, early diagnosis. During Breast Health Awareness Month (October), the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) and Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA a sub group of the RSSA) are stressing the importance of mammograms and how regular mammograms and breast examination can possibly save your life. The importance of early detection of breast cancer cannot be emphasised enough in a bid to optimise treatment and hopefully avoid the need for invasive treatments. Of all the cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in South African women, constituting

more than 50% of all cancer diagnoses. Mammography reported by radiologists is the foundation of early detection of breast cancer. Mammography and breast MRI are the only recognised imaging screening tools for breast cancer and multinational, multicentre trials have demonstrated a reduction in the death rate from breast cancer in women regularly screened by mammography, due to the early detection of breast cancer. Mammography is the mainstay examination, breast MRI is used in special circumstances. Modern mammography is done with a very small radiation dose and there is no evidence to suggest that mammography itself can produce breast cancer or that the radiation

presents any danger to any other part of the body including the thyroid gland. The mammogram is the first imaging method for screening when there are no lumps or symptoms or to provide further information if a lump or abnormality is detected. Mammography is often followed by ultrasound in both screening and symptomatic examinations. “The radiologist’s aim is to detect breast cancer before any of these signs appear. This is why we encourage South African women to have regular mammograms to ensure that if there are any malignant cells, they are caught early and can be treated appropriately,” says Dr Godinho, President of RSSA.

Age - The risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About one out of eight invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45, while about two of three invasive breast cancers are found in women age 55 or older.
The RSSA recommends that women aged 40 or older should have a mammogram every 1-2 years.
Family history - Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have this disease. Having one first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman’s risk. Having two first-degree relatives increases her risk about three-fold. Personal history - A woman with cancer in one breast has a three to four times increased risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast. This is different from a recurrence (return) of the first cancer. Dense breast tissue - Women with denser breast tissue (as seen on a mammogram) have more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue, and have a higher risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately, dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors to spot problems on mammograms.
Lifestyle factors – excessive alcohol use, little to no physical activity, smoking and diets high in saturated fats increase the risk of breast cancer.

NASA research suggests that Mars once had more water than Earth’s Arctic Ocean. According to NASA scientists, who, using groundbased observatories, measured water signatures in Mars’ atmosphere, a primitive ocean on the Red Planet once held more water than the Arctic Ocean. Scientists have since been searching for answers as to why this vast water supply had left the surface. “Our study provides a solid estimate of how much water Mars once had, by determining how much water was lost to space,” said Geronimo Villanueva, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the new paper. “With this work, we can better understand the history of water on Mars.” NASA’s Mars Exploration Program seeks to characterise and understand Mars as a dynamic system, including its present and past environment, climate cycles, geology and biological potential. These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original
Putin conscripts 150 000 new troops into Russian army Vladimir Putin has conscripted 150 000 new troops into the Russian army as the country unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Syria, Daily Mail reported. This happened while Iran and Islamist group Hezbollah prepare for a major ground offensive. Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria, backed by the country’s Lebanese allies, Hezbollah, and rebel fighters from Iraq and Afghanistan. A Lebanese source claimed that the Iranian ground forces were soldiers and officers,

escape
Eyewitness News reports have alleged there is reason to believe some Correctional Services officials may have helped Radovan Krejcir smuggle items into his prison cell, in the hope of making an escape attempt. According to the reports, Krejcir, convicted of drug dealing, kidnapping and attempted murder, had planned a dramatic escape from prison involving helicopters and luxury cars. During a recent raid of his cell, a 9mm pistol, four cellphones and other items were found hidden. An important diary was also found which may help police crack other cases. According to the reports, this was Krejcir’s fourth attempt to escape prison, but luckily information from intelligence sources prompted a raid on his cell. Several people have been questioned in relation to the event. Despite the find, police remain confident that they will be able to keep him behind bars. (www.ewn.co.za)

Indian toddler charged with theft Police in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh named two-year-old Ravi along with three men in a police complaint. Police attempted to arrest Ravi on Tuesday, causing his alarmed father to take him to the district court, where he explained the situation to senior police officers, whereafter Ravi’s name was taken off the complaint. A theft had been reported from Bajehra village in Sitapur on 20 September. On the basis of a complaint by the victim, as well as other villagers, police registered a case of theft and trespassing against four men, including the toddler. It isn’t clear why Ravi’s name was included in the initial complaint. The three accused adults have been arrested and lodged in jail. (www.bbc.co.uk)

Dating after abuse Lizeth Kotze
Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za The trauma experienced in an abusive relationship is intense and damaging. Getting back on the scene to start dating again after something like physical or mental abuse in a previous relationship is understandably daunting. The good news, however, is that with proper healing, you will be able to venture into a new relationship with confidence. One of the major areas of your life that will need repairing is your self-esteem. It is quite possible that, after an abusive relationship, your self-esteem is not what it used to be. Boosting your self-esteem should thus be your number one priority on the road to recovery. Spend time with yourself, start to love yourself again and focus on the idea that you deserve better. This will not happen overnight, so be patient with yourself and
give yourself ample time for the healing to take place. Trusting yourself as well as others will be another area of concern. Do not blame yourself for the abuse and trust that only you know what is best for yourself. Trust that you are deserving of a loving and respectful relationship. Also, trust that you are much wiser and that you are now capable of spotting any warning signs that might ring a bell in any new relationship. Once you start dating again, you will most likely find that you are much more alert for any negative behaviour your new partner might display. This will enable you to leave before you fall victim again. Believe in yourself, pay attention to the process of healing, and rebuild your selfesteem and confidence. Remember, time is your friend and after healing the scares of the trauma, you will be better, stronger and wiser for it.

Lizeth Kotze Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za We are quick to believe that the words ‘mental health problems’ are associated with things like ‘the nut house’ and strait jackets. We could not be further from the truth. Mental health problems should not be viewed as a problem limited to those we like to call ‘insane.’ Everyday issues like substance abuse and depression, to name but a few, also fall into the category of mental health problems. Those of us who are lucky enough not to suffer from any mental health problems are quick to judge, stigmatise and even discriminate against those who do suffer from the one or other mental health problem. This just makes matters worse. By doing so, we are causing those who suffer from these kinds of problems to develop low self-esteem, to withdraw from society and in some cases even to isolate themselves completely. We need to understand that
these people do not have a choice and that their mental health problems are real and should be taken seriously. It was therefore decided to make ‘Dignity in mental health’ the theme for the 2015 World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated on 10 October. The reasoning behind the theme is to encourage society in general to get better educated on the topic of mental health problems in an attempt to dampen the stigmatisation thereof. Encouraging society to better understand, as well as to sympathise with, those with these kinds of problems, could help mental health sufferers a great deal. Basic human rights like being treated with respect and enjoying a place in society without being judged or discriminated against are meant for all, and not only for those without mental health problems. Let us show support to those who struggle with mental health problems by assisting them by any means possible.
Choosing what and where to study next year With application deadlines looming at higher education institutions around the country, many Matrics have not yet decided what much less where - they are going to study come February 2016, says Peter Kriel, Head of the Faculty of Business at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution. IMAGINE YOUR IDEAL CAREER It may sound obvious, but the first thing you need to consider is what you see yourself doing after graduation, and what your ideal job would be, says Kriel. “One of the biggest mistakes often made by prospective students is not considering what they actually want to be and do a decade from now, which results in them settling for educational opportunities and environments that are not suitable. This failure of vision more often than not results in academic failure ….” Kriel says it is rare for a Grade 12 to be 100% clear on this question, “But you have to grapple with the various ideas for your future, and in doing so also take into account your choice of subjects at school, and your broad direction. For instance, do you want to go into business, education, law or science?” DO BROAD RESEARCH “Investigate the kinds of qualifications which are likely to land you in your field. That will narrow down your list of available courses and institutions. Also be realistic in understanding that reaching your goal may require a building block approach. You will not become the CEO of a large company with only an undergraduate degree. In fact, you may not even qualify to access an undergraduate degree, in which case you may have to do a relevant Higher
Certificate first to give you access to a degree course,” says Kriel. DO DETAILED RESEARCH “At this stage in your decision-making process, … identify all institutions of higher learning in the geographical area of your choice that offer the qualifications that interest you,” says Kriel. Kriel says the easiest way of finding a list of available institutions, as well as their accreditation and registration status, is to go to the website of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and follow the Qualifications and Part Qualification link. FILE YOUR APPLICATION Find out as much as possible regarding the courses and institutions, says Kriel. “This includes application closing dates and institutionally specific entrance requirements, but also other aspects such as class sizes, and student and career support. It is recommended that you apply to all the institutions where you meet the criteria, to keep your options open. “Make sure your application form and supporting documentation are in place. Very importantly, do not wait for your Matric certificate to apply. Your latest available results will suffice for at least conditional acceptance, and waiting for your final results could mean there are no spaces left in your course of choice.” FOCUS ON YOUR MATRIC “… passing your Grade 12 exams as well as possible is arguably the most important first step in realising your dreams for the future, and doing better than expected could open doors that you may, during your decisionmaking process, have considered closed,” he says.

SASCOC JOINS SETE 2015 as a Conference Partner SASCOC is South Africa’s national multi-coded sporting body responsible for the preparation, presentation, and performance of teams to all multi-coded events, namely the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Games, All Africa Games, Olympic Youth Games, Commonwealth Youth Games and Zone VI Games. SASCOC has joined the 2015 Sports and Events Tourism Exchange as a Conference Partner and will be part of the debates around growing Sports and Events Tourism in South Africa and preparing for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. “South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is excited to be involved with the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange 2015, for the fifth year running. It is of paramount importance that government, private sector and sporting bodies come together to support the growth on our continent of sporting events. This year will feature, amongst others, discussions on the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the next seven years planning, to ensure another successful mega event, another first for Africa” said Chief Executive of SASCOC, Tubby Reddy. SASCOC will also make it possible for 20
local sport federations to attend the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange Conference, taking place on the 28th & 29th October 2015, at the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice! Menlyn, in the City of Tshwane. “It is very exciting to get SASCOC on board again. SASCOC is a key partner when it comes to bidding and hosting international sport events. This partnership demonstrates the government’s commitment to growing the sports tourism industry,” said Sugen Pillay, conference director and director for business development at the awardwinning Thebe Reed Exhibitions. SETE 2015 will also feature a host of international and local speakers and plenary sessions, discussing topics such as Golf Tourism in South Africa, linkages of School Sports Development and growing Domestic Tourism, international marketing trends of events and many more. The annual Sports and Events Tourism Exchange is the only event of its kind in Africa and provides a platform that brings together businesses from the Sports, Events & Tourism industries, and encourages collaboration between these sectors, consisting of a two-day conference, table top exhibition and networking events.

Hope for Springboks Heyneke Meyer said on Sunday that he will adopt a ‘’mixed approach’’ to his selection for the World Cup match against the United States tomorrow. The announcement came after the South African team continued its World Cup recovery with the most stunning result in Rugby World Cup history, by beating Scotland 34-16 on Saturday, backing up their 20-point win over Samoa the previous week to go to the top of Pool B. Just by winning in London, the Springboks will ensure safe passage to the quarterfinals. If they register four tries, it will also guarantee a log-topping finish in their

Pool. A mere four-day turnaround to the closing pool game might be the only pitfall. Heyneke Meyer told Sport24 this weekend that ‘’It is very good to have got this (Scotland) game behind us; you learn hard lessons and every single one is tough.’’ He added that the USA will be up for the match against the Springboks, waiting for them. He watched their last game against Scotland, he said, and it was immensely physical. We as a nation stand behind our team. It seems the loss to Japan was just a blip for the Springboks; qualification in first place looks likely now for the two-time Rugby World Cup champions.
