I wouldn’t describe myself as a mall rat.

It’s usually hot and loaded with so many people.

Usually, I will download a map of said shopping centre, find the closest parking, walk at a brisk pace, get what I need and leave.

But not before I have checked online to see what it is I want and if the specific shop has it in stock.

I am, however, very excited about the opening of Mall at Newmarket on Thursday.

Some of my favourite shops we can expect are definitely the Food Lovers Market and Waltons. I’m crazy about stationery, as my colleagues very well know and proved it by buying me 17 pink pens for my birthday.

There’s something about a Food Lovers Market that just makes me happy: the smell of fresh fruit, lavish displays of different food (especially cheese – I love cheeses, as Suzelle would say). There’s a shop I can spend some time at!

We have received the first of the Matric Farewell photos and, I must say, Cassidy van Wyk and her partner Brad Bedser looked absolutely stunning at Alberton High’s Matric Farewell on 2 October. It’s a lovely time of year, when the students show just how beautiful they can look.

On a more serious note, it’s common knowledge that there were some issues regarding scholars who weren’t invited

to their Matric Farewell, due to certain

standards they didn’t meet.

On page three, we have a letter from a member of a school governing body to explain just how difficult it is for schools when school fees aren’t paid. Prioritising is of paramount importance in life, which includes your children’s education.

We hope to see everyone at the opening of Mall at Newmarket on Thursday. If you spot us, come and say ‘Hi’ and take a photo with us!

The Alberton Figures Models and Talent branch held an awesome Think Pink Cancer Awareness Showcase and Graduation on Saturday 10 October at the Brackenpark Hall.

The entire show was dedicated to creating cancer awareness and the off-stage presenters educated the audience and students about cancer facts between the various classes of junior and senior models and dancers.

The shining stars outdid themselves with their beautiful costumes and sequences and truly represented the pink theme of the day.

The fabulous pink-and-grey stage backdrop complemented their costumes and was completed by a large array of pink balloons.

Many thanks to the wonderful judges who took the time and made the effort to attend our show – Monica Supra, Editor of the tame TIMES, Nadine Nolte, a model who attended the 2015 IMTA, and Desiree Oliphant, the current Mrs UN South Africa.

Desiree delivered some inspiring and heartfelt words to the students and truly uplifted everyone’s spirits.

Congratulations to all the students who achieved top scorer and won or placed best-dressed - you all worked really hard and deserve the recognition, as well as the beautiful dancers - your sequences and solo dances completed the fantastic show.

It takes courage to perform on a stage in front of a live audience and each and every one of the students showed that they are true performers.

EN NATALSPRUIT Die oop stuk grond waar Alberton City in 1986 gebou is, kan hier duidelik gesien word.

Met die uitbreiding van Alberton deur die insluiting van New Redruth en die nuwe woonbuurt Florentia in die 1930’s, het die Stadsraad gepoog om ’n vergrote stadsaal op die Eeufeesplein

by Van Riebeecklaan op te rig. Die publiek het beswaar teen die verlies van die oop ruimte gemaak. Selfs al is die ou stadsaal in 1938 aansienlik vergroot, het dit vinnig te klein geword om met die groei van die dorp tred te hou.

Ná afloop van die Tweede Wêreldoorlog in 1945, was die munisipaliteit dringend op soek na grond nader aan die middelpunt van die uitgebreide dorp.

Tussen Voortrekkerweg en Natalspruit was ’n gebied van 39 akker wat nie in 1912 saam met New Redruth as dorpsgebied geproklameer is nie. Daar het twee ou historiese plaashuise van die Meyer-familie uit die 19de eeu langs ’n watervoor uit die spruit gestaan. In 1940 het sakeman Nicholas Kapousousoglo Transvaalhuis opgerig met winkels op die onderste verdieping en woonstelle bo.

Hy het in die 1940’s onsuksesvol probeer om die woongebied Nicholasville daar te stig.

Sedert 1944 het J.F. Gerald sy groentetuine op die oewer bedryf.

In 1951 het die Stadsraad ’n aanbod gekry om die grond en alle geboue vir £65 000 te bekom. Die transaksie is in Oktober 1953 beklink, maar eers in 1962 is daar ernstig begin met beplanning aan die nuwe munisipale sentrum. Al die historiese huise is gesloop en die woonstelbewoners van Transvaalhuis moes ander huisvesting vind. Die welbekende Portugese tuine waar groente direk uit die grond gekoop kon word, het verdwyn.

Ons versoek hoofde en Graad 4-onderwysers vriendelik om vroegtydig met die Alberton-erfenisvereniging in verbinding te tree as hulle later die jaar of vroeg volgende jaar ’n besoek van die Erfenisvereniging verlang.

Met so ’n besoek gee ons graag met ’n skyfievertoning ’n oorsig oor Alberton se geskiedenis en help die leerders met hulle werksopdrag wat deel van die kurrikulum uitmaak.

Foweystraat het heeltemal van die kaart af verdwyn, terwyl die grootste deel van Saltashstraat gesluit is (sedertdien vervang deur Alwyn Taljaardstraat, vernoem na die Stadsklerk). In Februarie 1976 is die Burgersentrum se salekompleks geopen. Twee jaar later het die groot nuwe poskantoor in Du Plessisweg die publiek begin dien. In Januarie 1984 is die munisipale kantoorgeboue tussen die bogenoemde twee geboue, amptelik geopen. Met nog heelwat beskikbare ruimte, is die Alberton City-winkelsentrum in 1986 gebou en later aansienlik vergroot. Die ou familiebegraafplaas tussen Voortrekkerstraat en Clintonweg is in 1990 verwyder om vir meer parkering plek te maak.

Vandag was toe die dag. Kettingsaag, veiligheidsbril, gereed. Stort vir ‘n uur om die kloue semi-sag te kry. En toe knip ek maar. Sommer met die eerste nael skiet die knipsel soos ‘n ‘’38 special’’ amper by my ruit uit. Die honde blaf, die werkers hardloop rond. Niemand weet wat aangaan nie. Maar ek doen... ‘’Nee jammer almal, ons word nie beroof nie. Ek snoei net my toonnaels’’.

Maar nou ja dis gedoen. Nou weer myself voorberei vir die volgende keer. En Trixie weet ook as ek laat was, was dit omdat ek my toonnaels moes sny. Dit was werklik omstandighede buite my beheer.

BEHEERLIGGAAMSLID SKRYF

“AS SWART KINDERS VERNIET KAN SKOOLGAAN, KAN MY KIND OOK.” Dis ʼn feit dat swart kinders in nieskoolfondsheffende skole (non-paying schools) ook uitgelewer is aan die heel swakste omstandighede denkbaar. Geen of min toilette, geen handboeke, dikwels geen skoolbanke, afwesige onderwysers en oorvol klasse. (Ek het al ‘n swart skool besoek waar daar tot 80 kinders in een klas sit en waar ander leerlinge onder die bome klas kry.) Is dit werklik wat jy vir jou kind begeer, meneer en mevrou? Die rede hoekom skole skoolfondse hef, is juis om bogenoemde situasie te voorkom.

“DIE SKOOL SAL MOS DIE GELD IEWERS KRY, AL BETAAL EK NIE.” Waar, meneer en mevrou? Elke skool kry ‘n klein bedraggie per jaar van die onderwysdepartement. In ons skool se geval is dit minder as R400 000 uit ‘n totale begroting van byna R7 miljoen. Hierdie geld mag net vir water en ligte en handboeke aangewend word. Werk self uit hoe ver dit strek as jy in ag neem dat die gemiddelde bedrag water en ligte by ‘n skool R60 000 per maand beloop. Dis reg, dis heeltemal te min

“EK KAN ALLES AAN DIE EINDE VAN DIE SKOOLJAAR BETAAL.” Weer verkeerd! Die skolewet bepaal dat skoolfondse alles aan die begin van die jaar betaalbaar is. Skole is egter nie onredelik nie, en gee daarom die vergunning dat ouers oor tien maande kan betaal. Sodra jy een maand se betaling mis, kan die skool reeds met die nodige, voorgeskrewe wetlike stappe teen jou begin, nes enige ander maatskappy aan wie jy geld verskuldig is. Wie gaan vir die daaglikse uitgawes betaal as almal eers aan die einde van die jaar betaal?

“DIE SKOOL HET NIE SO BAIE GELD ELKE MAAND NODIG NIE.” Woon gerus jou skool se begrotingsvergadering by en dan sal jy verstaan waarvoor die geld aangewend word. Die heel grootste uitgawe is gewoonlik vir salarisse vir beheerliggaamsposte. Dis

“SKOLE BETAAL NIE WATER EN LIGTE EN SULKE GOED NIE.” Verkeerd. ʼn Skool wat skoolfondse hef, moet soos ʼn (gesonde) onderneming bedryf word.

Niemand kom ʼn skool meer tegemoet nie, nie eers die munisipaliteit nie. Die dae van gratis enige iets vir skole is lankal verby. Boonop moet ʼn skool se boeke jaarliks ge-oudit word, en selfs dit kos geld. En waar moet al hierdie geld vandaan kom as tussen 40% en 45% van ouers (dis ons skool se realiteit) net elke jaar weier om te betaal? ʼn Skool vra nie veel van ʼn ouer nie, behalwe om stiptelik skoolfonds te betaal en betrokke te wees by die skool se fondinsamelingspogings deur van jou tyd en kundigheid te gee. Is dit werklik te veel gevra in ruil vir ʼn goeie opvoeding vir jou kind? (En terloops, die wat so graag skinder oor beheerliggaamslede se betrokkenheid, niks keer jou om te doen wat hulle bereid is om te doen nie. Jy het nie ʼn idee hoeveel van hul tyd én geld die meeste BL-lede vir die skool gee nie.)

Dit is tyd dat gewone ouers besef ons skole is ons verantwoordelikheid net soveel as wat dit die skoolhoof, personeel en beheerliggaam sʼn is. Die regering gaan ons nie hiermee help nie – ons sal self die deure moet oophou.

So, voordat jy volgende keer weer die personeellid of beheerliggaamslid wat bel oor agterstallige skoolfondse vloek en skel (ja, dit gebeur daagliks!) dink ʼn slag mooi. Jy benadeel nie die regering nie, maar jou kind, sy toekoms en jou eie gemeenskap. Onthou dit wanneer ʼn skool gedwing word om te sluit of Afrikaans as onderrigtaal te laat vaar net om die deure oop te hou.

Niemand keer jou om jou kind na ‘n townshipskool of na ‘n skool soos Parklands High te stuur nie – daar hoef jy nie skoolfondse te betaal nie. Die regering gee jou die keuse tussen ʼn gratis skool en ʼn skool waar jy skoolfondse moet betaal – die keuse bly joune. Die onderwysdepartement het ʼn formule waarvolgens die aantal personeel vir elke skool bereken word, en hulle betaal slegs die salarisse van daardie aantal onderwysers, nie ʼn sent meer nie. Elke ekstra onderwyser in beheerliggaamsposte moet deur die skool self betaal word.

hierdie ekstra personeel wat sorg dat jou bloedjie die nodige aandag kry en nie net nog ‘n nommer word in ‘n klas van 50 of 60 (of 80!) kinders nie. Alles wat by ‘n skool gebeur, moet deur die skool self betaal word: van die fotostate wat nodig is vir omsendbriewe en vraestelle, tot onderhoud aan die geboue “DIE REGERING GEE SUBSIDIES VIR OUERS WAT DIT NIE KAN BEKOSTIG Laat ons vandag en terrein, die NIE.” reguit praat: daar Verkeerd! Die skolewet bepaal dat ouers wat dit nie kan bekostig nie, het ‘n kultuur van korting kry, maar die regering dra wanbetaling posgevat nie een sent by tot hierdie sg. onder veral wit, “subsidie” nie. In Afrikaanse ons skool se geval kwalifiseer ouers as dit by ongeveer ‘n kwart van die ouers werklik vir korting, en daardie korting skoolfondse word deur ander ouers se betalings en kom. fondsinsamelings gesubsidieer, nie deur die regering nie. telefoonrekening, water en ligte, bou van nuwe klaskamers, busse om “EK KWALIFISEER VIR KORTING.” Dit word (gelukkig vir die arme skole) aan die kinders mee te vervoer… Die lys is lank. die hand van ‘n stel streng riglyne wat Meneer en mevrou Wanbetaler, iemand moet deur die onderwysdepartement opgestel selfs vir die toiletpapier en instandhouding is, beoordeel. Jy moet werklik behoeftig van die badkamer betaal wat jou kind by wees, en jy moet ook bereid wees om al die die skool gebruik. En daardie iemand is vereiste dokumente in te dien vir behoorlike gewoonlik die ander ouers. Skaam jy jou nie? beoordeling. Dit sluit bankstate en die regte dokumentasie van SARS in. Ouers “EK IS GESKEI EN MY MAN MOET DIT en wettige voogde op staatspensioene EINTLIK BETAAL, NIE EK NIE.” en ongeskiktheidspensioene kwalifiseer Weer eens verkeerd. Die konstitusionele hof byvoorbeeld, maar moet steeds aansoek het in 2013 bevind dat art. 40 van die Skolewet doen en bewys dat hulle dit nie kan bekostig albei geskeide ouers verantwoordelik hou nie. Dieselfde geld vir werklose ouers. En vir die betaling van skoolgeld. Die skolewet bepaal dat die hulle sal bevind as alle enkelouers daarop betaling van skoolfonds ‘n statutêre (dus, aandring dat die kind(ers) se biologiese pa wetlike) verpligting is. Dit beteken dat dit of ma die skoolgeld moet betaal.” (Beeld, 6 voorgeskryf word deur die wet, en ook September 2013) ingevolge die wet strafbaar is. Daarom mag skole jou hof toe neem as jy nie betaal nie.

Boonop teken jy ‘n kontrak met die skool om te bepaal wanneer jy jou kind inskryf – jy pleeg dus ook kontrakbreuk. om selfs net die water en ligte vir die jaar te betaal. Al die ander geld wat nodig is om die begroting te laat klop, kom uit ouers se sakke, of word deur fondsinsamelings ingesamel.

Elke ouer wat nie sy kant bring nie, plaas ‘n swaar las op die res van die ouers.

SE RVI CES

Baie mense is ontsteld omdat ‘n skool in Alberton geweier het dat matriekleerlinge met agterstallige skoolfonds die matriekafskeid bywoon, en hoewel ek dit nie goedkeur nie, verstaan ek die frustrasie wat ‘n skool dryf tot sulke drastiese stappe. Veral nadat daar blykbaar herhaaldelik die afgelope paar maande met die wanbetaler-ouers gekommunikeer is oor die feit dat hulle nie skoolfonds betaal nie.

Ek weet uit ervaring hoe sukkel skole om ouers sover te kry om skoolfondse te betaal en om betrokke te wees by dinge soos fondsinsamelings vir die skool. Almal verwag privaatskoolstandaarde, maar wil verkieslik so min moontlik daarvoor betaal. By die skool waarby ek betrokke is, is daar sedert 2009 ʼn yslike R9 miljoen se onbetaalde skoolfondse deur ouers wat dit kan bekostig, maar bloot te slaprug is om hul verpligtinge na te kom.

Laat ons vandag reguit praat: daar het ‘n kultuur van wanbetaling posgevat onder veral wit, Afrikaanse ouers as dit by skoolfondse kom. Dis ironies dat dit meestal ook hierdie groep ouers is wat die hardste skree teen dubbelmediumskole - juis hulle sal uiteindelik veroorsaak dat baie plaaslike skole hierdie roete sal moet gaan.

Ons as beheerliggaamslede het al elke argument in die boek gehoor waarmee wanbetalers hulself probeer regverdig. Hier is die gewildstes:

The 2016 Local General Elections are just around the corner – maybe not for voters, but certainly for political parties, which have to enthuse their branch members, raise funds, choose councillor candidates, put up posters, debate issues and recruit party agents.

Commuters have probably already noticed the odd billboard on the highway highlighting government progress in the area of local government.

The media is already experiencing an increase in press releases from political parties. A few weeks ago the EFF leader called South Africa a failed state [iol.co.za] that outsourced everything, including toilet paper.

This is just the beginning. The red T-shirts, the blue T-shirts and the yellow T-shirts are still coming; along with opinion polls, posters on poles and the inevitable mudslinging – who can forget the ‘open toilet saga’ of

2011?

Sadly, the real needs of those who desperately need service delivery are too often forgotten as campaigners bearing free T-shirts, berets, braaivleis - even booze – try to out-charm each other into the hearts of voters via their stomachs. And the race for easy headlines often blurs the lines between one party’s policies and those of the next. Perhaps it is time to set an upper limit on the election budgets of our political parties. Ours is supposed to be a proportional representative system which was designed to allow maximum expression for the vibrant diversity of voices that constitute the Rainbow Nation, yet smaller parties cannot even think about competing with the DA’s blue tsunami of street posters or the ubiquitous smiling-face-of-our-leader yellow T-shirts distributed by the ANC. Of course the red beret has a fashion appeal among the youth quite apart from its political significance, but somebody has to pay for all these promotional items – and the voters never seem to be informed about who the funders are.

Vandag is dit ook waar vir ons. Hy weet wat dit is waarna jy smag, hy ken jou behoeftes en nood. Nog voordat dat jy gevra het, is hy bewus van dit wat jy nodig het.

As ‘n kranige rugby ondersteuner homself, het Mnr Buytendorp gemeld dat sport ‘n uitstekende wyse is om jong leerlinge verskillende dissiplines aan te leer wat uiters noodsaaklik is in ‘n toenemende veeleisende moderne lewe. Hy het dan ook vir Zandri baie sterkte toegewens met haar projek en die finale beoordeling wat plaasvind op 31 Oktober 2015.

Mnr Wium Uys, huidige skoolhoof van Leeuwenhof Akademie het met groot trots vir Zandri bygestaan in die proses.

Leeuwenhof Akademie vier hul 20ste bestaansjaar in 2016. Zandri is reeds deel van Leeuwenhof Akademie sedert 2005, toe sy as 3-jarige as Graad 000 leerder ingeskryf is. Leeuwenhof Akademie beywer hul vir Christelike Nasionale holistiese opvoeding van hul leerders en bemoedig onafhanklike inisiatiewe soos Zandri se projek ten sterkste aan. Dit is die kultuur van hierdie Akademie wat leerders soos Zandri die selfvertroue en deursettingsvermoe gee om ‘n verskil te maak waar nodig Zandri het dan ook besluit om as deel van haar projek, Rugby with a purpose, ‘n persentasie van die gelde te skenk aan die J9 Joost Van der Westhuizen Fonds.

Dit is wanneer ons sien hoe ‘n jong leerder soos Zandri Swanepoel, ‘n projek soos Rugby with a Purpose aanpak met doeltreffenheid, entoesiasme en ywer dat ons weet n jong burger van ons land stel die voorbeeld vir ander om te volg en dat die toekoms van Suid Afrika met sulke verantwoordelikheid positiwiteit voorspel.

Zandri Swanepoel, het hierdie uitdaging aangepak in samewerking met Leeuwenhof Akademie in Gauteng. In die gees van die Wêreldbeker Rugby toernooi, het Zandri besluit om haar projek te inisieer rondom Rugby with a purpose. Die projek behels die insamelling van fondse asook rugby toerusting wat dan aan minder bevoorregte skole in haar omgewing geskenk sal word.

Dis met groot entoesiasme en ywer wat Zandri begin skakel het met moontlike donateurs om haar projek te ondersteun.

Mnr Conrad Buytendorp, Handelaarshoof van Hyundai Bruma, het by die aanhoor van Zandri se projek, dadelik sy Tak se steun aangebied in haar projek. Dit was met groot entoesiaisme en opgewondeheid dat Zandri op 12 Oktober 2015,‘n tjek van R5000 in ontvangs geneem het vanaf Mnr Buytendorp.

Haar huidige skoolhoof Mnr Wium Uys het haar in die oorhandiging ondersteun.

Correct information

leads to arrest After a business robbery occurred at a pub in Second Avenue, the barlady managed to give the police information which helped them to recover the vehicle used in the execution of the robbery.

They were robbed of money, cellphones and jewellery. One suspect was arrested after being found driving the car and was charged with the robbery - he has already appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court to answer to the alleged charges. The car was confiscated and booked at SAPS 13. Victims of crime must try to collect as much information about perpetrators as possible, says SAPS, without disobeying their commands - as this will help the police to solve the crime quickly.

business-breaking Alberton Sector Teams, Flying Squad and security companies managed to make nine arrests for a business breakin that was in progress at one of the banks in Voortrekker Street. It is alleged a sector member received a complaint about an alarm and went to check. Four men were seen running away from the bank premises and police gave chase and arrested them.

Their phones were taken by the police and when one of the phones started ringing, and the police answered it, the caller said, “I broke the window from inside and looked outside but I cannot see you.”

The police then realised that there were still

more suspects inside the bank and called for backup. The bank manager was called to come and open the bank. Inside, five more suspects were caught busy drilling a hole in the safe, unaware of what had happened to their ‘colleague.’ The suspects, whose ages range from 36 to 65, allegedly gained entry through the back door by grinding a hole in it.

Brand-new equipment with a value of about R20 000 allegedly used in the process was confiscated by the police and booked at SAPS 13. The case has been transferred to the Provincial Investigation Team, but thanks go to the members of Shift B.

Stolen goods recovered While on patrol, police managed to recover two stolen screens. This was after they saw a man carrying a heavy load and stopped to search him. He then threw a schoolbag and everything else on the ground and started running. In the schoolbag the police found tools and a VW Computer box.

No one was arrested.

In a separate incident, police recovered cables that were cut loose at the open space behind BP Garage at the corner of Heidelberg Road and Old Vereeniging Road after being alerted by security officers who had been chasing two men who were allegedly busy stealing the cable. No one was arrested but all the items have been booked at Alberton SAPS 13.

Illegal shebeens raided Liquor confiscated from illegal shebeens was destroyed by Sgt Philemon Mashamaite and Cpt Solomon Matlou at Alberton SAPS. To sell liquor without a license is an offence and members of the public who are found breaking the law will be arrested and the liquor will be confiscated. It is also an offence to sell liquor to anyone under 18.

Resilience successes Resilience Gymnastics Club, which is based in Robertsham, sent 27 of their Artistics Girls and Boys levels 1-3 gymnasts through to take part in this year’s competition.

All 27 gymnasts did extremely well at their first friendly competition in Kempton Park, where 13 of them took overall places in the top three rankings and most gymnasts finished in the top 10 rankings.

At the Central Gauteng Regionals, 11 gymnasts were placed in the Top Three rankings, with Tanielle Smith winning her section and Joshua F e l i x Southon finishing second overall in h i s section. The majority of the gymnasts reached To p 1 0 rankings

at these competitions again. Twenty-five of these gymnasts will be awarded their Central Gauteng Half Colours for their achievements.

All gymnasts qualified for the North Zone Competition (mini Nationals). Tanielle Smith finished first as champion at this competition. Outstanding performances were given by the gymnasts, who were competing for the first time, with some only starting a few months before the beginning of the competition season.

A big thank you for all the hard work and extra training goes to all t h e gymnasts and their coaches Roxanne and Tracy van Herwaarde.

In other RWC news, New Zealand beat France in ruthless fashion and Argentina thrashed Ireland, setting them up to take on Australia, which beat Scotland with a controversial last-minute penalty after South African referee Craig Joubert called a deliberate offside.
