Freedom Friday Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za The Department of Arts and Culture decided to spend this year’s Valentine’s Day honouring the Freedom Friday campaign by encouraging South Africans to celebrate their love for their country. They held a big Freedom Friday event at Eastgate Mall and encouraged the patrons to join in the celebrations. Dancers entertained the crowd and the local music group GB Collective performed a few songs where they incorporated former president Nelson Mandela’s quotes about freedom into their lyrics. The Department of Arts and Culture launched the official countdown clock to South Africa’s 20 years of democracy in October last year. The campaign is gaining more momentum this year and the Department has dubbed every Friday ‘Freedom Friday’ up until 27 April, when our democracy is officially 20 years old. The campaign is geared towards giving the public the opportunity to pay tribute to South Africa’s 20 years of democracy and to celebrate freedom. The Department has joined hands with Lead SA, the Government Communications and Information System, Proudly SA and Brand South Africa to start this campaign and they are spreading the spirit of celebration by doing a national roadshow. As part of the road show, they visited various shopping malls and points of interest countrywide where they handed out free goodies, such as badges, books and flags that symbolise freedom and democracy. The Department calls on all South Africans to celebrate Freedom Friday every Friday up until 27 April by acknowledging the positive changes that have occurred in South Africa since democracy, and by volunteering to help your community where help is needed.

Horrific cases of animal abuse in a four day period The Bedfordview/Germiston SPCA have found another three horrific cases of extreme neglect and cruelty to animals that they had to attend to within a four day period. Laurence Kingston from the SPCA stated, “These incidents must stir in all of us an undertaking to take greater care, love and give attention to our precious pet dogs and cats. We make this urgent appeal to all responsible animal owners and lovers of animals to visit your local veterinary hospital immediately and seek medical treatment or advice if anything troubles your pet. You may also contact SPCA Germiston and Bedfordview.” The first incident reported was in Castleview, Germiston. A female, Tina, was found to be in a terrible condition and was totally emaciated. When she was brought to the SPCA, they were forced to humanely euthanise her. Three other incidents reported were two in Albermarle and one in Katlehong.

In the Albemarle incident Snoepie, a female Cross Breed, white colour, was suffering severe trauma from extreme cancer growth. The second pet dog was a Maltese, who was very ill and had a deep gash/cut on her head. In the Katlehong incident the SPCA received a call to rescue a stray dog running around on a school property. After a brief chase around, the SPCA managed to secure the dog and discovered an extreme case of skin and flesh removal. Kingston stated, following investigations the SPCA suspects that boiling water was the cause. Staff member Piet brought the dog back to SPCA and because of the extreme trauma, agony and suffering the dog was going through they had no option but to humanely euthanise the dog.

TOTAL NEGLECT: Family pet found who had to be euthanised.

Where do we leave the issue By Nieto Hernandez I would forgive anyone who didn’t know that the previous week’s scenes in Johannesburg were actually about a genuine problem for South Africa on all sides of the country’s political landscape; the unacceptably high statistic of unemployed South Africans, especially youth. Although the cause may have been legitimate and noble, a number of fundamental blunders by both DA and ANC could have ended in a Marikana sequel. People’s lives were (either deliberately, or as consequence of short-sightedness) placed in danger for the sole benefit of a political branding exercise. The DA must be applauded for speaking up against mediocrity. In the past all the government has succeeded in doing is to make it increasingly difficult for entrepreneurs to conduct business and, as a result, placing more pressure on itself as the population who does not qualify is now more reliant on social grants and crime. That having been said, I question the direction of the protest. In SA, although the line may be blurred, there is a separation of party and state. So when we vote we vote for the party we want to assume the

Opposition is not necessarily enmity; it is merely misused and made an occasion for enmity - Sigmund Freud role of government, the party is not however the government. So mistake number one (the opening of the can of worms), was marching to Luthuli instead of the Union Buildings. The second blunder on the cards was the day and time this march was scheduled for. Unemployment affects all South Africans, it would have served the cause much better if South Africans with and without jobs stood together to make the government realise the issue’s seriousness. On the ANC’s side of the fence, I fail to understand why they had to bus in armed people into Jozi to protect Luthuli House. What was the DA’s presence threatening? The second blunder of the ruling party, which brings up a question about standards, was the fact that only a few days before the strike they were condemning Malema’s EFF for promoting violence. What peace will be realised while we stand with bricks in hands and with clenched fists? All of these have robbed South Africa of an opportunity to find multiparty solutions to our very real problem.

Krejcir-linked cop gets R5000 bail

The third Hawks officer, Jan Mofokeng, arrested in connection with the attempted murder and kidnapping charges connected to Radovan Krejcir appeared in the Palm Ridge Court on 12 February for his official bail application. Jan Mofokeng was granted bail of R5000. He will appear with Krejcir and the other accused. Mofokeng, from the organised crime unit in Germiston, is the sixth suspect arrested in the kidnapping case that has kept Krejcir behind bars since November. The last time Mofokeng appeared in court the state advocate, Lethabo Mashiane, argued that numerous witnesses in the kidnapping case have been threatened. Mashiane said

some of the witnesses are in a protection program, but not all of them. Mashiane further argued that Mofokeng knew where the witnesses live and who their families are, therefore the court should oppose bail. The case refers to an incident in June where the six suspects allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a man whose brother, known only as ‘Doctor’, disappeared with a 25kg shipment of drugs he had been recruited to help smuggle through OR Tambo International Airport. They are accused of keeping the man at Krejcir’s Money Point business in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, for four days, and assaulting him.

Owen Serero’s case Khuli Chana case awaits decision from DPP postponed One of the men accused of trying to kill police investigators looking into Krejcir’s activities appeared in court on 12 February. Owen Serero was arrested last month as one of four suspects accused of conspiring to kill forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and Colonel Nkosana “Killer” Ximba. In court Serero complained about a pain in his leg and alleges that he is not receiving medication for it at the Pretoria Central Police Station. In a prior appearance Serero requested for a transfer to a correctional facility as he was not allowed to bath at the station he is currently being detained at. Magistrate Simon Radasi denied the move to a different facility, as the court order stated that he be detained at the Pretoria Central Police station. As the case continues at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, Serero’s other crimes will be prosecuted, for the moment, in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. It was revealed last week that Serero had been linked to a series of hijackings, and had escaped from police custody after being arrested. Serero’s case was postponed to 10 March as prosecutor Penny Pillay, for the state, requested for a postponing so she could complete pending investigations.

The case in which South African hip-hop star Khuli Chana was shot last November by Bedfordview police is awaiting a decision from the Directorate for Public Prosecution (DPP). According to a statement from SAPS Brigadier Neville Malila, “The investigation into the matter has been finalised and the case docket was discussed with the Senior State Prosecutor and referred to the office of the Directorate for public prosecution (DPP) for a decision. Both case dockets, the Attempted Murder charges opened against the members of the SAPS as well as the attempted murder charges against Khuli Chana, are at the office of the DPP for a decision.” The initial claim from the SAPS following the incident stated that it was a case of mistaken identity. This later changed with the SAPS saying that the musician was shot and injured by police after failing to stop and trying to run non-uniformed police officers over who tried to stop him outside a petrol station on the M1 in Midrand. The incident happened after police had been searching for a group of men who had kidnapped a Bedfordview businessperson and requested a ransom. One of the suspected kidnappers, Enoch Motsepe, a detective from Silverton, Pretoria, was arrested after the ransom money was collected in a bathroom at the garage. He is still in custody and is suspended from service. The case has been remanded until 1 April for further investigation. A warrant of arrest was issued for a second suspect who will be arrested soon. Investigation into the kidnapping is continuing.

SPCA Bedfordview and Germiston calls on all responsible pet dog and cat owners residing in the Bedfordview and Germiston areas to have their own animals sterilized free of charge. We can accommodate a maximum of 15 pet dogs and cats and registration for this

free sterilization offer will be strictly on a first come first served basis. Please contact only SPCA Germiston and Bedfordview at 011 825 5033 and quote ‘ World Spay Day Special ‘ whereby the SPCA staff will take down your details, register your pet animal and provide other information.

Make the most of

World Spay Day World Spay Day is traditionally thelast Tuesday in February each year. This year, Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg will be celebrating this important day on 25 February and they invite their welfare clients to visit them before the date to book their animals for a free sterilisation on the day. The following conditions apply: - You are an existing hospital client - Your animal is vaccinated up to date and is checked by the vet at the normal consultation fee, before 22 February - Animals must be healthy and under 1 years of age and free of disease, not pregnant, on heat, with only one testicle or suffering from any pathology of the reproductive tract - Only 1 sterilisation per family is allowed - Only 20 places are available on a first come first served basis, if the conditions have been met - The veterinarian will make the final decision about bookings. Sterilisation ensures that pets live longer,

healthier lives and make better pets. It helps to reduce the risk of disease (for e.g. mammary tumours, uterine infections), decreases aggression and reduces the number of unwanted animals born that end up in shelters or are given away to unsuitable homes where the problem of unsterilised animals will be continued. Sterilisation makes good financial sense too, as money does not need to be spent feeding more animals than one can afford. AACL invite their hospital clients (those needing welfare assistance), to visit them in the consulting hours: Monday-Friday 09:00-11:00 and 13:00-15:30, Saturday 08:30-11:00. The standard consultation and vaccination fees will apply. For more information contact Sr Cindy Price on 011 435 0672.

Unsurprisingly the JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department) denied permission for the DA to march on the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House. Equally unsurprisingly, every march led by the ANC or its alliance partners are allowed to take place unhindered. The DA was forced to go to court to ensure that they can indeed peacefully march through the streets of Johannesburg. But this is not just about a march, it is about protecting the Constitution and ensuring that it is not in danger. If my right to the freedom of peaceful expression is curtailed, then your right is being curtailed. Plain and simple. Ironically, the ANC are claiming that the DA is being “provocative”, yet it is the ANC that used disturbing language by saying that it will form a “ring of steel” to defend Luthuli House. What is it defending when the DA has clearly stated that it wishes to march peacefully? What does President Zuma mean when he says this march is “dangerous”? This march is an opportunity not only to highlight that the ANC is not creating jobs, and that its manifesto confirms this, but it is also an opportunity to protect our Constitution, which we see being eroded day by day by the ANC. It is not up to the ANC to decide who may or may not march. Anyone should be able to do so even if the ANC or anyone else doesn’t like it. It is the Constitution that is supreme, not the ANC or its president.

Clr Izak Berg (National Chairperson of the Independent Ratepayers Association of SA) writes:

First it was the turn-around by the DA on BEE, followed by the disaster with AGANG and now the march in Johannesburg. What did she think by organising this march? There could only be one loser, the DA - and did they lose this round by a knock-out. There are many other means of showing muzzle and the disapproval with the ruling party than to march through the streets of Johannesburg, resulting in businesses to close in fear of political violence, costing these businesses an arm and leg in revenues for the day (which can lead to job losses, not job creation). Rather fill a stadium with your supporters than having them running around in the city for cover. One needs to ask who are her advisers, or is it a fact that once she has put her mind on something then hell with her supporters and followers? Politics is not kindergarten Helen. These actions have left all DA supporters with egg on their faces, as one of their own councillors has put it. Is there a leader in the DA to stand up against Zille and called for her head after these disasters? I don’t think so. The fact that Zille and the DA have requested a leader from another party to be their Presidential Candidate in the upcoming elections (which backfired), shows that Zille has no confidence in the current leaders of the DA. How can she and the DA then expect the voters to have confidence in the DA and their leadership?

Battle in the streets

Now we wait to vote

WE WANT OUR VOICE TO COUNT: Wychwood Primary was used as a voter registration station. The last voter’s registration weekend is done and dusted, and the fifth national general elections will be held on 7 May. What do South Africans do up until Election Day? For people who have already made up their mind who they will be voting for, they will watch how political parties campaign in order to gain votes; and those who are still undecided will use these election campaigns to help them make their choice. According to Provincial Electoral Officer (PEO) of IEC Mr Masego Sheburi the commission had determined a target of 1,1 new registrations to achieve an organisation wide 80% enrolment of eligible voters. Below is the breakdown of the Gauteng results: × Organisationally IEC have surpassed the target with a registration figure of 1 259 500. × Gauteng has contributed 339 728 new registrations out of total activity of 815 692 during the past weekend. × This represents 26,13% contribution to the national registration figure.

× Consistent with a youthful campaign, the majority of new registrations are persons aged 16-29 years of age. The registration for this age cohort is 257 985. × While IEC fell short of reaching the 80% registration target as a province, they have nonetheless surpassed the psychological 6 million mark. They retain their position as the biggest voting bloc. × An important area of performance is that they availed convenient opportunities to voters to check and update their registration details. In this regard 437 604 persons have updated their details by re-registering in different Voting Districts. × An already entrenched trend of there being more females than males on the voters roll perpetuates, with 51% of new registrations being by female voters.

prospect. The two groups were closely guarded by police and all measures to avoid physical clashes were put in place. Although no reports of injuries surfaced, a few ANC supporters were arrested for public violence. The police had to fire teargas into the crowds and eventually DA leadership opted to call the march off before any memorandum was delivered. While the ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu denied violence from ANC supporters, DA leaders Mmusi Maimane and Helen Zille gave statements accusing the ruling party of intolerance and violence, which are signs of disrespect towards the Constitution. The DA in Gauteng embarked on a protest march on Wednesday 12 February. The march, which was the party’s expression of concern over the Government’s promise of 6 million jobs, was planned to follow a route from the Westgate Ria-Vaya bus station (Johannesburg) down to Sauer Street, where the ANC’s Headquarters are situated (Luthuli House). The Democratic Alliance’s march, according to JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, was legal as of an application made on 13 January, and SAPS and JMPD officers were prepared to have their hands full, anticipating clashes with ANC supporters. The situation became increasingly hostile when scores of ANC supporters arrived to meet the DA on route to Beyers Naude Square, which was the eventual ending point as Luthuli House became a dangerous

the ruling party. “Hani is a very dynamic young woman and we are confident she will add a lot of value to our movement,” COPE General Secretary Lyndall Shope-Mafole said. “It has been a difficult decision to make, but COPE has in a sense always been part of my home,” Hani said. “It is a pity that our people continue to hold on to the promises of a better South Africa that shall never be realised under the current leadership. We have placed loyalty above integrity,” Hani said. “I feel I have joined a ship with a captain that has been tried and tested,” added Hani. Hani said her vision is to see a South Africa that is a true democracy and is accountable to the people. She said the current state of affairs where one party dominates the political landscape is not healthy for South Africa’s democracy. “COPE is a party that is willing and ready to work with everyone, that is one of the issues I considered before making this decision,” concluded Hani.

Pregnancy awareness week

EAGER TO EDUCATE: Nurse Carin Hanekom and dietician Candice Lawrence. Monday 10 February marked the start of National Pregnancy Awareness Week. The purpose of this week is for moms-tobe to have the opportunity to find out more about a healthy pregnancy at their local hospitals. The Netcare Cinton Hospital held an information session in the maternity ward where interested pregnant women could come for advice on how to manage their changing bodies, what diet to follow to ensure that the baby is healthy and what to expect during and just after labour. All the ladies also received pregnancy magazines and little goodies, like dummies, to store for the big day. Nurse Carin Hanekom, who works in the lactation ward, and dietician Candice Lawrence eagerly answered every lady’s question to ensure that they left the hospital well-informed. “It is very important to eat healthy during pregnancy. You can develop pregnancy-related diabetes if you do not eat correctly,” warned Lawrence, who did a presentation on a healthy diet during pregnancy. Hanekom explained how to breast feed correctly and she emphasised the importance of including the father in the pregnancy experience, so that the mom has support and to allow the baby to bond with both parents. Info box: Pregnancy nutrition; important nutrients to consume during pregnancy: - Folic Acid - for healthy brain and spine development - Essential fatty acids (such as Omega-3) builds healthy brain cells - Calcium - for bone and teeth development - Iron - ensures a healthy placenta and helps the baby to build his/her own store to prevent anaemia during the first six months - Water - necessary for growing cells and for breast mild production - Calories - for the baby’s brain to grow healthily - Also remember that it is natural and healthy to gain weight during pregnancy; an average weight gain of approximately 13.6 kg is recommended.

Styling hair according to your hair-type Hairstylists are always warning their clients to use products that are ideal for your specific hair type. However, what are the main hair types and how must one treat and style each one? tame TIMES spoke to local hairstylists and got a few tips: Main hair types and how to style each: Curly: after shampooing and conditioning the hair, use a good curling cream to lock the curls in. Scrunchdry the hair with a towel and off you go! Curly hair is ideal for a wash-andwear style. Tip: Do not touch or brush the curls once they are dry, because it will get fluffy and frizzy. If you frequently straighten your hair to get rid of curls, use a proper heat-protective spray or lotion that protects the hair against flat irons as hot as 230 to 260°C. Straight: the biggest challenge with straight hair is its inability to hold a style. Use a styling aid, such as hair

spray, a strong mousse and a curlingtong to add body and bounce to flatstraight hair. Tip: hair sprays have different levels of strength, but we usually categorise them into two categories: hard hold and soft hold hair spray. Use hard hold when you want your hair style to last very long. Hard hold is ideal for matric farewell dances or fancy functions and if your hair is in a style that it does not naturally take. Use soft hold hair spray on a normal day to support your hair style and to keep a natural look. This is also ideal for ladies who frequently touch their hair. Hard hold tends to make the hair look hard. Course: this hair type is naturally very dry and frizzy; it is therefore important to use products that moisturise the hair to make it look silkier. Tip: use hair treatments or masks when your hair feels as if it has been compromised by too much dye.

Fine: this hair type is usually very limp and in desperate need of body and volume. To style, use the same advice given under straight hair, but remember that fine hair can break more easily. If your hair is fine and you dye it frequently, the chemicals can compromise the protein in the hair. Elastic bands that are too tight can also break fine hair easily. Tip: the more damaged and dull your hair feels and looks, the more you need to cut it. Overall, make sure to cut your hair every time your style grows out.

Keeping your children safe Supplied by SAPS Child safety tips Know your full name, parents’ names, your address and phone number. Tell your parents about things that make you feel scared, uncomfortable or sad. Know the difference between a good secret and a bad secret. A good secret is fun to keep, like a surprise party. A bad secret feels bad to keep and makes you feel scared. Strangers: Never tell strangers my name or where I live. Buddy System: Use the “buddy system” and avoid walking or playing alone outside and in public places. Yell No, Run and Tell: Yelling and running are better safety ideas than trying to hide. If a stranger approaches you, YELL “No,” RUN to where there are safe adults, and TELL an adult. Safe Distance: Stay a safe distance (approximately three arm-lengths) away

from strangers and stranger’s cars, even if a stranger seems nice. Run in the direction opposite from the direction the stranger’s car is traveling. Fight Back: It is okay to yell and fight; anything to get the stranger to let go. Yelling is the most important thing I can do, and to yell, “No!” “Help!” or “Danger” to get an adult’s attention. Home Safety: Keep all the doors and windows locked when you are home alone, and to go to a neighbour and call 10111 if a window is broken or if the door is open when you get home Doorbell Safety: Answer the door by asking, “Who is it?” Never say that you are alone, and never open the door when alone, unless it is someone my parents told me to expect and let in. Phone Safety: Never say that you are alone when a stranger calls. You can say, “Mom/ Dad can’t come to the phone now, can I take a message?”

tame TIMES would like to apologise to Elmarie Pretorius from the People Search and Rescue Unit for exposing her name as a source in the article ‘Kinderverkragter verdeel familie’, which was published last week. We spoke to her for general information regarding cases like these and there was a

misunderstanding regarding attributing the information for this case to her. Pretorius writes many articles regarding child protection and children’s rights and there was just a misunderstanding regarding where to attribute to her and where not. Pretorius spoke about this specific case as she is involved in it, but she meant to demonstrate the larger situation and never wanted to exploit anyone involved in the case.

Child Protection All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse

When are you too old to be called a child? The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 stipulates that any person aged 0-18 years is a child. Adults are aged 19 and older.

take the form of criticism, threats or rejection, ignoring, isolating, taking advantage, corrupting, swearing at a child and lying to a child.

What are children’s rights? All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Parents who neglect their children or severely assault them are also overstepping their boundaries. We have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 to report suspected cases of child abuse to police, social workers or any designated child protection organisation in the area. If you are aware of child abuse and you turn a blind eye, you can also be prosecuted when it is eventually reported. By law, parents are not allowed to physically hit or belt a child at all. However, many parents believe in a proper hiding. When parents discipline a child, however, it must not be traumatic, as the child can report the adult for physical abuse in severe cases. Why should we protect our children and why is it important to look after them? Child protection is not merely a right, but it is important for their development. Any child needs to grow in all aspects of their lives: physically, emotionally, economically, spiritually, culturally and mentally. Parents and/or guardians and even the larger community are responsible for proper development of our children.

Child exploitation is exposure of a child to the following situations: Child Labour Slavery Sexual exploitation Child-pornography Child trafficking How do you know whether a child is being abused? Check for warning signs, such as frequent bruising or injuries that cannot be explained, and a change in the child’s usual behaviour. Other signs also include obsessions, inappropriate sexual behaviour, inappropriate anger, bed-wetting and difficultly sleeping or nightmares.

Important definitions: Physical abuse is any act that results in inflicted injury or death to a child. Assault is a severe form of physical abuse inflicted through belting, for example. Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities. It is abuse whether the child has consented or not. Neglect is deliberately not providing for a child’s physical needs (such as food, warmth, shelter or protection from danger). Failure to seek or follow through with medical care and failure to make provision for the child’s education is also seen as neglect. Emotional and psychological abuse: a pattern that harms or limits a child’s emotional development or sense of self-worth. It can

Important to know: In South Africa there has been a significant increase in child abuse, especially with boys. According to national stats, approximately one in five children are abused. It has been proven that approximately 80% of the sexual abuse offenders are well known by the family and/or the children. The stereotype that only men are sexual perpetrators is a myth; women are equally dangerous. The abuser often abuses. It is a vicious cycle of perpetration. The child stores the traumatic memory and once the child is an adult with children of his or her own, abuse is an automatic reaction that is triggered. Adults who were abused as children need to speak about their experience in order to divert from this cycle. Do not try to do your own investigation of the abuse. If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, report it to the police, the Department of Social Development or your nearest designated protection organisation. In Alberton, you can contact the Christelike Maatskaplike Raad on 011 9072922, or phone the police helpline on 10111; or contact the Alberton Child Welfare organisation on 011 907 3004/5 or 083 367 5843 to report a case or to find out more about trauma counselling.

Female swimmers Holy Rosary tackles conquer Midmar Mile social media challenge

GOOD DEED NEKNOMINATION: Holy Rosary matrics with Mrs Nixon, at the Edenvale Methodist Church, donating sandwiches to those in need, an act of kindness in response to the social media craze ‘NekNomination’. Holy Rosary Matrics recently accepted a challenge from High School English teacher Mrs Mia Nixon to do a random act of kindness in their community. The girls collected sandwiches and dispersed them to the needy and homeless at the Edenvale Methodist Church on 10 February. This act was inspired by the latest social media craze ‘NekNomination’, involving drinking. South Africans have interpreted this in a more positive manner after viewing South African Brent Lindque donate

a sandwich, chocolate and cool drink to a homeless man in response to a NekNomination. These random acts of kindness not only inspires the community to do good for others, but is also a clear message to the youth of our country that irresponsible drinking is not acceptable. The school nominated St Benedict’s matrics and 94.7 Highveld Breakfast Express to do another random act of kindness.

Swimmers take on St Henry’s Midmar Invitational Gala Holy Rosary High School Midmar Swimming team recently participated in the St Henry’s Midmar Invitational Gala in Glenwood, Durban. The girls swam incredibly well, coming second out of eight schools from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

SWIMMERS: Midmar Mile team. Holy Rosary High School recently headed down to Howick, KwaZulu-Natal to participate in the annual Midmar Mile. Thirty girls and two staff members took part, with grade 11 pupil Jessica Whelan being the first female out the water in the noncompany team event last Saturday, and placing 7th overall in the main individual event (Women 14 – 30 years) last Sunday.

St Catherine’s heads attend invitational dinner

St Catherine’s High School Head Girl and Boy were invited to the Germiston Rotary Club Dinner on 30 January. The pupils said, “We had an entertaining evening over an excellent supper, and were addressed by Professor Adele Thomas. Professor Thomas gave an extremely enlightening speech on The Ethics in Leadership. She was an outstanding speaker and had the audience in the palm of her hands for a half an hour. She certainly gave all the ‘heads’ some inspiring motivation.” After dinner and the speech the head pupils from the different schools were able to mingle, and new contacts were made. They saw it as a very worthwhile evening and enjoyed by all. St Catherine’s High School’s head pupils, Neo and Mandisa, thanked the Germiston Rotary Club for this special evening and the opportunity to do so some networking.

Bennies Rugby Festival to get underway With the rugby season upon us the St Benedict’s preparatory are ready to pull up their socks, put on their boots, tie the laces to take on the upcoming St Benedict’s Preparatory U/13 Rugby Festival. The festival is scheduled to take place from 27 February – 1 March and is positioned as the largest facilitated Junior School Rugby event in the Province. Its key focus is to support transformation in rugby and developing the skills of previously disadvantaged children. Three development teams will participate in the festival. Two of the teams will be selected by the Golden Lions and the third team is St Benedict’s supported Orchards Primary School. The St Benedict’s Preparatory School have since 2010 provided the opportunity to underprivileged ruby players from local communities to participate and compete in its rugby festival, allowing the boys exposure to top local and visiting schools from other provinces. St Benedict’s Prep, together with the help from generous sponsors, provides a full match kit, transport, team photographs, coaching

clinics facilitated by the Golden Lions players, daily meals and players’ packs to all players of the three development teams during the festival. The Golden Lions have committed to support and endorse the festival and will actively be involved before and during the festival. The school has been extremely fortunate having received generous donations from its sponsors, old and new. Bennies invites all parents, their friends and business associates to attend the festival in support of all the boys playing. The Prep School’s promise to its visitors is the opportunity to enjoy good rugby, good food, a selection of beverages and a variety of other fun events to keep the little ones happy.

Overwhelmed and ecstatic; those are the only words that can describe seeing England-born Johnny Clegg and his band live. From the moment you sit down, anticipation from fellow audience members hypes you up. Wearing a pair of black tracksuit pants, a black t-shirt and with all his Zulu instruments surrounding his feet, Clegg has a natural way of making the crowd feel as happy and content as he looks. Familiar songs were heard along with an interesting tale of Clegg’s adventures and life-changing experiences continued between each song, as well as a joke or two to ensure a quality show. Clegg touched on his experience with Mandela and how he had changed his heart and was dear to him. He also made reference to how his journey with Zulu music and other aspects of Zulu culture led him to a junior lectureship in Social Anthropology at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwaterstrand. In order for Clegg to learn how to play traditional Zulu music, he first approached Sipho Mchunu, a migrant worker who was a street musician. Clegg learned Zulu and an athletic style of Zulu traditional dance called Indlamu during his time with Mchunu as well. Clegg is quoted in the past, during the struggle, that he wanted to be able to play to everybody, that is all. It is a simple thing, but in South Africa it was a political issue. Clegg expressed in his performance how glad he was to now be able to perform without the struggle, but his music is a reminder of it. Johnny Clegg has a stage presence like no other and should he be performing again in Johannesburg, tame TIMES recommends this as a show for your bucket list. Please visit our website: www.tametimes. co.za for more information and our Facebook page for videos of the concert.

Barloworld GM Bruma impresses in Soweto Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

The Barloworld GM Bruma car dealership spent Saturday 15 February displaying their new vehicle range to the locals in Soweto. According to Gizelle Bunting, New Vehicle Sales Manager at Barloworld GM Bruma, this was the first time that the dealership went out into the community to advertise their brand, and they aim to use this method of marketing more often. The locals at Chaf Pozi in Soweto were very inquisitive to view the vehicles that were on display; which included the Chevrolet Trail Blazer, Isuzu KB, Opel Astra OPC and the Chevrolet Sonic RS and Astra GTC. The sporty Opel Astra OPC was a definite favourite among the locals. The cars were parked between the two majestic Soweto Towers; and while the bystanders were inspecting the vehicles, the Barloworld staff handed out roses and chocolates for Valentine’s Day. At the end of the day, the dealership secured two potential buyers who were very interested in the OPC and the Trail Blazer. Overall, the Barloworld staff were satisfied with how the day turned out; they received many inquiries and they were able to establish a better relationship with prospective clients. “The purpose was to create brand awareness among the youth in the heart of Soweto. It turned out great,” said Kabelo Sethusha, who works in Barloworld GM Bruma’s retail department, on behalf of the dealership. Interested clients can contact Bunting on 011 607 7823 or at gizelle.bunting@ bwmr.co.za for more information.

No more sleeping for the Lions Marnitz Boshoff was able to overcome massive pressure to put a drop goal between the posts, giving his team a one point lead to end the game with a score of 21-20

Jéan de Witt 011 862 8500 It was a proud day for faithful Lions supporters this past Saturday, when their team made a triumphant return to Super Rugby by beating the Cheetahs on their home ground. The well-deserved man of the match recipient, Marnitz Boshoff drew first blood in the opening minutes of the game, through a converted penalty kick. The Cheetahs followed suit shortly after, while adding the opening try for the competition, scored by winger Raymond Rhule. Despite this setback, the Lions kept their cool and patiently crept their way back to a half time score of 10-9 to the Cheetahs home side. Less than ten minutes into the second half, the Cheetahs managed to cross the try line once again. Boshoff, despite suffering a dangerous tackle that resulted in a yellow card against the Cheetahs, continued his stalwart performance by converting two more penalties. The home side converted a penalty of their own, putting the Lions at a two point deficit nearing the close of the match. A penalty against the Lions right in front of the posts seemed like it might be the final blow to put victory beyond the Johannesburg team’s reach. The Cheetahs’ Elgar Watts rushed the kick and ultimately missed, leaving a very slim sliver of hope for the Lions team. With but a minute remaining, Marnitz Boshoff was able to overcome massive pressure to put a drop goal between the posts, giving his team a one point lead to end the game with a score of 21-20, ensuring that everyone knows - the Lions are back!

FIRST GAME WIN: Marnitz Boshoff was the man of the match recipient.

OFF THE PITCH

Where to now for South African Cricket?

The next couple of years are e x t r e m e l y important for the Proteas and the growth of the new boys currently playing in the u/19 World Cup. Yes we are proud to be the number By Craig Norris one Test team at the moment, but how long will it last? Do we have the depth in our ranks to maintain this position? Current structures in place would suggest that we are doing it right, but I am not so sure. The development of the game in this country has had its problems in the past few years with the quota system, including interference from selectors, and some have suggested that we are not selecting teams on merit. What will come from the current crop of players in the u/19 World Cup, you ask yourself. Will these future stars of our game be the great players going forward and replace the likes of Gary Kirsten, Jonty Rhodes or Jaques Kallis, to name but a few? The unexpected early retirement of Jaques Kallis will obviously put pressure on our National team to perform. Any team, let alone a national team, can ill afford to lose the services of such a great player. It certainly showed in the first test match against the Aussies at Centurion Park over the last few days. Smith and co were seriously wanting in all departments of the test match. I chatted to a couple of prominent youngsters throughout South Africa this week, playing for their various franchises last week, and they admitted that their only goal was to get an IPL contract and somehow secure a future in the game. It is quite sad and the perception I get is that it is all about the money and not the game. At least three seasons in the IPL would set you up nicely for retirement, according to the numbers being thrown around. Where has the value gone in playing the game for the love of it and not the money? Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, we will see our u/19 team being crowned as champions. A great grassroots start to the modern senior game. Good luck boys.
