WILL THE TRUTH BE REVEALED?:George Louka(right back), also known as George Smith, leaving the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court. Image by: Alon Skuy, first appearance on timeslive.co.za George Louka, who allegedly killed strip club owner Lolly Jackson, has been successfully extradited from Cypress to South Africa earlier this month. He briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 18 February to start his trial. However, the case was postponed to 7 March. Lolly Jackson was shot dead at a house in Edleen, Bedfordview on 3 May 2010. Louka is accused of committing the crime, as he allegedly phoned the Gauteng crime intelligence chief, Joey Mabasa, shortly after the murder and confessed to killing Jackson. However, Louka has argued that he was

merely a witness to Jackson’s murder, and contacted Mabasa to report the crime and not to own up to anything. Louka fled the country shortly after Jackson’s murder and claimed that he was assisted out of South Africa. According to SAPA, he attempted to appeal against his extradition order in a Cypress court and tried to convince Supreme Court judges that he would not be safe in South Africa and that he was a target for assassination. However, Louka lost the appeal and he was sent to South Africa. It has been reported that Louka has, in interviews with newspapers, admitted that

he cannot reveal too much about Jackson’s murder, as there are very powerful and important people who will go down if he does. According to News 24, forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has said that they do not suspect that Louka killed Jackson, but that he is the key to helping them put the pieces of the puzzle together. Investigators hope that through Louka’s case they can exploit not only the criminals involved in Jackson’s murder, but also those of the larger local crime underworld. Louka is facing charges of murder, possession of stolen goods, and money laundering.

Cotlands gave them a Cotlands wrapped toy bin, which their employees and general public could put toys into. The property company put up flyers and posters to promote the toy drive. Themba Ndaba, the Cotlands driver, picked up all the toys they collected and Cotlands is very grateful for their support.

There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land - Det:15:11. There will always be poor people in the land - as much as this statement sounds condemning and negative, I see its outcomes or its promised results as necessarily humanising. That having been said I must add this disclaimer: I do not subscribe to the type of poverty that is purposefully imposed on people for the gains of others. The poverty I think the scripture refers to is the type which should prompt one to execute divinity through humanity. Goodness centres most, if not all, of Earths beliefs. So whether one believes in God, Allah, Shembe, Krishna or any other deity, the abovementioned scripture calls on humanity to fulfil or execute that divine attribute. I was prompted to comment on what I’m now spotting as a trend, the aloofness towards the plight of the poor. In many instances things are even made easy for us. Giving can be done through charity organisations, or through corporate initiatives such as KFC’s add Hope campaign or even the beggar at the traffic light. Debate is always going to be sparked over the correctness or incorrectness of the method used in giving, but consider this: we are blessed to be a blessing and you may be the only hope someone experiences. So while we are locked in endless debate, we miss out on playing our part in divinity’s plan to penetrate the hearts of humanity. Let’s chat. I know many opinions exist regarding this week’s topic so let me hear them at voice@tametimes.co.za or drop me a tweet @NietoVoice.

The five people accused of attempting to murder investigators involved in Czech fugitive Rodovan Krejcir’s case appeared in the Alexandra Regional Court on 18 February. The case was postponed to Monday 7 April. According to SAPA, the National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman, Phindi Louw, said that there are further investigations that still need to be finalised before their trial can commence. The five suspects, Nandi Nkosi, Zoe Biyela, Siboniso Miya, Owen Serrero and Jacob Nare, were arrested for allegedly plotting to kill forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and crime intelligence officer Colonel Nkosana ‘Killer’ Ximba, who are analysing the Krejcir case. Earlier this month two of the five, Nkosi and

Biyela, were denied bail. The two women are charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, of unlicensed ammunition, of stolen vehicles, conspiracy to murder, and with theft. Both women have denied any involvement in the alleged plot in their affidavits.

tT- Are you excited about the night? John: I am intrigued and interested to spend a time with someone from the public to find out their views on Mr SA and maybe see where I can include the public more to strengthen the brand. tT-Please share your worst date experience John: I would definitely say it’s a date where there is nothing in common. I have had a few of those. The whole night is planned and from the offset there is a clash of personalities. Nothing worse than spending the entire night on a date and both parties would rather be at the dentist. tT-What is your best pick up line? John: To be honest I do not believe in pick-

up lines and I have never used them. I rather believe to be honest and direct without any tricks. But I can share one that I recently saw my cousin use. A guy takes his phone and goes up to the table where a girl that he is interested in sits (this is usually in a club or bar) and takes the light on the phone and acts as if he is looking for something under her table on the floor. Eventually the girl will ask him “what are you looking for” and he answers “your telephone number”. tT-What advice can you give when going on a first date? John: Do’s-Just be yourself, girls are very observant on the first date and they will see straight through fakeness. Don’ts-Don’t be mucho (girls see enough of that), don’t talk

Hunt makes her dream come true With dreams of writing a book, final inspiration struck for blind author Leanne Hunt on New Year’s Eve in 2010 and now the novel Jozi Gold is the end result. As an avid lover of 702 talk radio, the Linksfield mother closely followed their World Cup countdown. Leanne noticed that everyone was getting on board, making proudly South African merchandise, and the contractors were working endlessly to finish stadiums and roads. It was a very vibrant time and she was inspired by the goodwill of the people. However, Hunt was conscious of the tensions that came along with hosting an event of this stature, which brought along many nasty elements. With this as an inspiration, Hunt set out to write Jozi Gold. Set in Senderwood, Jozi Gold explores the contrasting atmosphere of pride and tension during the 2010 World Cup. The book follows Jeannie Parker, who believes that she is in a happy stable marriage with her husband Craig. It’s only when her sister arrives from Sydney and notices that Craig is hiding something that her views start changing. The book takes you on Jeannie’s personal journey that leads her to discover her true worth and the fight to hold onto it. Jozi Gold is the perfect book for a woman who is ready to start living for herself.

The book is meant for someone whose children have left home and is looking for a fresh start, among others. “It is for women who desire to be their true authentic self, maybe even find themselves again,” said Hunt. Hunt was diagnosed with Star Gardt’s disease at the age of 14 and was deemed legally blind at the age of 17. However, this did not stop Hunt from studying. She completed her English Honours Degree with distinction at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She went on to be a freelance journalist, advertising copywriter, a PR editor and even ran a community newspaper in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. Clearly writing is a natural talent and gift. Hunt wrote a one act play, Private Views, and it won the best original script at the Edenvale Acting and Drama society in 2011. Hunt will be having her official book launch at Book Galore Greenstone Mall on 7 March from 17:00 to 19:00. Be sure to get a copy signed by her. Jozi Gold is available at Exclusive Books or Exclusive Books online, Amazon and Kindle books and Porcupine Press. For the love of the community On Valentine’s Day Primrose SAPS went out to the different sectors in Primrose to engage with the community. The theme was “For the love of the community” and the aim was to inform high crime areas about the types of crimes that have been occurring frequently and to give tips on how to prevent these crimes. According to Sergeant Styles Maome, the two target areas were Sunny Ridge and Malvern East area. One of the most frequent crimes is theft from cars when drivers leave valuable belongings in sight. In Sunny Ridge there have been many house robberies and the police wanted to warn and educate the community face to face. All the police officers marched around the area with colourful police vans to advertise their awareness campaign. The station commander, Sergeant Patricia Fakude, addressed the community throughout the parade. Officers from social crime prevention, the chair of Primrose CPF and cluster commander Brigadier Phumla Mdlankomo were also present. “On behalf of the station managers we would like to thank all participants of the event, especially our community members who took part. We hope that it will bear fruit for us,” said Sergeant Maome.

Peaceful protest march Missing teen Approximately three thousand members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) converged in an open field at the corner of Linton Jones and River Roads in Germiston on the morning of 14 February, with the intention of marching to the Germiston Civic Centre to present a memorandum of their grievances to Ekurhuleni Municipality. Ekurhuleni Metro Police in conjunction with SAPS members provided a safe passage for the marchers from Linton Jones into Power and Joubert Streets, until they reached the parking lot at the intersection of Queen

and Cross Streets. Subsequent to SAMWU leadership addressing their members, a memorandum was handed by SAMWU Chairperson Sipho Nkwanyana to the City Manager, Khaya Ngema, who was accompanied by the Chief Operations Officer (COO) Dr Imogen Mashazi, Head of Department (HOD) for Human Resources Lerato Gumbi, and the Acting Chief of Police Jabu Mapiyeye. The City Manager gave his response and thereafter the members dispersed peacefully to their various destinations. Linia Jena (17) was reported missing by her cousin at Germiston Police Station on 8 February. She is from Zimbabwe and had lived with her cousin in Dinwiddie, Germiston. She was last seen on 7 February at about 06:00. The cousin is not sure where she went but believes that she met somebody via social networking on her cell phone. It is possible she may even be in Pretoria. Linia was wearing an orange shirt, red long sleeve jacket and pink shoes when she went missing. BMW M3 loses control A BMW M3 lost control on 15 February around 23:00 by Germiston Lake. The passenger has two suspected broken arms and a head injury, however the driver is not injured. Emer-G-Med took the passenger to Tambo Memorial Hospital. It is alleged that both are suspected of drinking.

OUT OF CONTROL: The BMW M3 was found on its roof.

Rape suspect arrested Primrose police arrested a 31-yearold male rape suspect on Friday 14 February. The victim allegedly agreed to have sex with the suspect for money, but the victim’s conditions weren’t met and she then refused to have sex with him and was forced to follow through with it. According to Sgt Maome of Primrose SAPS, the victim reported that she and her friends were walking home when an unknown man driving a bakkie stopped near them. The man asked the victim whether she would be willing to have sex with him if he paid her, to which she agreed. The victim suggested that they have sex in her room at her residence, but the man refused. Against her will, the man drove to Walkers Street, parked on the pavement and forcefully had sex with her. Police suspect that the victim may have been a prostitute in Primrose. “As police we condemn the behaviour of both the suspect and the victim. The suspect should not have forced the victim to sleep with him, while the victim should not have entered the vehicle of an unknown person. We are discouraging such activities,” said Maome. The suspect has since appeared in the Germiston court and the matter has been postponed for bail application.

Make a safer career choice

With only 5% of those that matriculated having been accepted into university this year, the future for aspiring academics looks bleak. But completing short courses or a parttime certificate in Health and Safety cannot just change the future of aspiring learner’s, it can also make a meaningful impact on the lives of many others. Some shocking statistics were released at the start of the new production year by the Department of Labour. Over 24% of the SA labour force is currently unemployed while, on the other hand, 160 000 incidents and accidents were reported in workplaces in SA last year. “It is shocking to know that so many people are sitting at home because their education no longer meets industries requirements, while the absence of sufficient Health and Safety Officers is the reason why so many accidents can still occur,” one analyst said. Christopher Guy of Makrosafe agrees with the observation, but says that everything is in place to have this changed. “Makrosafe was recently informed that it’s Health and Safety Certificate course is now fully recognised by the Health and Welfare SETA,” he says. “Ever since, we have received much interest in this course, as it is divided into six different modules for which classes can be attended on a part time basis. And to accommodate learners even more, we bring the classes to the student’s region, instead of expecting them to come to our facilities,” he adds.

No basic understanding required The course has been put together with the objective to take a ‘lay-man-off-the-street’ and train him or her up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. This means that participation is open to virtually everybody. Learners are updated about things like legislation, health and safety principles, risk assessment, inspections, health and safety functions, implementation and evaluation of health and safety

Ster Kinekor’s night for the ladies On 19 February Ster Kinekor in Eastgate spoiled all the ladies with an exclusive prescreening of the fantasy love story a Winter’s Tale. Ster Kinekor started the national event ‘Girlfriends Getaway’ in celebration of the New Year. The initiative was launched this month at cinemas countrywide and they are planning to make it a monthly event. All the ladies received goody-bags filled with vouchers and magazines from various sponsors

programmes, and in groups of 10 there is ample time to go through the material, or to have things discussed. It is Makrosafe’s mandate to enhance the quality of training in the industry. Learners who have completed the course are assured that their certificate is accepted by the industry. Accreditation by HWSETA demands that systems have to be in place, quality standards have to be met and investment in learning material as well as assessors and moderators were made.

Bulldog trials booming senior side.” This past Saturday the Bullodgs played a game against Springs. This was a friendly match before they take on the Lions seven-a-side tournament in Alberton on 1 and 2 March. Last year the Senior Union Bulldogs were the runners up when they lost with one point against UJ in the last seconds of the final.

The Union Bulldogs had their annual trials on 15 February and it was a huge success. Louis Odendaal, the club manager said, “A lot of players showed tremendous talent that is above average for February. In the junior trials some players showed their talent, which can get them playing for the

Riding the Storm

Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za

The Lions maintained their unbeaten Super Rugby run with a 34-10 win over the Stormers. The win over the Western Cape Stormers secured a second home victory for the Gauteng team. The Lions opened the scoring on Saturday night through Stefan Watermeyer early in the first half. Watermeyer’s try was converted by the Lions’ currently in-form kicker Marnitz Boshoff. Boshoff, who is responsible for all 21 points that resulted in the Lions victory over the Cheetahs only a week ago, was again the reason for the smiles of many Lions fans as a result of his 6 penalties and 3 drop goals. The Lions victory did not come without a few low points. Two Lions players received yellow cards. Franco Mostert and Julian Redelinghuys were handed yellow cards in the second half. This ill-discipline offered the Stormers, who were 22-7 down at the end of the first half, a chance to claw back into the game in the second. At the end of the game the Stormers only DEFENCE SPLITTING: Stefan Watermeyer finished off a move, which converted 3 points, which was no match for the Lions’ second began in the Lions’ half, ending in the Lions’ only try for Saturday’s half 12 points. game.

OFF THE PITCH

Who has the best job in cricket?

I’m sure many of us have sat at home stuck on the couch, viewing ball-by-ball play and commented about field placing, or wondered aloud about c e r t a i n By Craig Norris selections or annoyingly criticised the preparation of the pitch. But through all of our passion as fans, what would be the best job in cricket? The coach has the unenviable task of steering the ship and trying to accumulate enough positive results so as not to find himself joining the football managers in the unemployment line. Alas the coaches, no matter how successful, are eventually judged, unfairly probably, on a series that does not go according to plan. Case in point is Andy Flower, who fell on his sword following England’s humiliation in Australia. The captain, responsible for team decisions and delivering on the coaches’ promises, as well as blending new and experienced players into formidable teams, is the second most important job in the game. What about umpiring? Stern faced older gentleman, reminiscent of old school headmasters, standing dutifully out on the cricket field making pinpoint and pressure decisions. Decisions that could have a bearing on the final results and players’ careers going forward into the 1st class arena. Is commentating the job? Often where ex-players criticise the new generation. A place where cricket becomes poetry and a simple single can be made to sound like a celebration. Especially on radio where descriptions are more vivid and poetic. What about bat-maker, now that’s a job in cricket isn’t it? Do you fancy the idea of spending days or weeks crafting out a bat for one of the world’s best? Starting with a solid block of willow and carving, planning and sanding that block to create a masterpiece that scores a hundred on debut? I think all of these jobs in cricket are worthy of consideration. We know from experience that some carry more burdens than others and some have higher expectations than others, but each is uniquely important to the game. After careful consideration and through research, I can now determine that I will stick to the one cricket job that I am very good at - that of spectator. It’s a safe job. No one will take it from me and no matter how often I fail there is always a job for me the next day. Indeed, I think it is the noblest job in all of cricket.
