Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Sam Hazley from Elma Park walked away with the grand prize at the lucky draw held at the Emirates Lifestyle Booth during the recently concluded Jo’Burg Open. The prize package includes two economy class flight tickets to Dubai, three nights stay at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai and hospitality passes to the DP World Tour Championship. The lucky draw was the culmination of the Emirates “Spot the Cap” promotion held during the JoBurg Open at the lush Royal
Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course in Linksfield. The airline handed out over 8000 caps during the tournament and Hazley was amongst the thousands who turned the greens into a sea of red. Spectators had to complete an entry form after being spotted wearing their Emirates cap by the Emirates crew. The draw was held on the final day of the tournament in front of hundreds of golf enthusiasts who watched Fouad Caunhye, Regional Manager, Emirates Southern Africa pick the winning name. Hazley who had already left the course to watch the last hour of the tense battle
between George Coetzee and Justin Walters at home said, “I never expected to win and at first I thought it was a prank.” “I enjoy golf and am elated at the opportunity Emirates is giving me to watch some of the world’s best golfers in Dubai.” Caunhye said, “Engaging with our customers and fans through sports has been an integral part of Emirates’ brand strategy. It makes sense for us - as an airline that connects the world - to align our brand with prestigious golf tournaments where the world’s most talented players come together. We will continue to work with our partners to celebrate the value of sport and deliver meaningful experiences for golf fans.”

Glenoaks visits the SPCA
SPCA manager Laurence Kingston gives the school learners a tour of the kennels.
On Wednesday 12 February 2014 the learners from the Glenoaks School in Kensington, Johannesburg, paid the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA a wonderful visit. The learners have chosen the Bedfordview/Germiston SPCA to form part of their school project for 2014. During the year the learners will be learning more about the SPCA and how it operates. They will also be taught what they can do to create awareness of dogs and cats. Laurence Kingston, the SPCA Manager, took the youngsters on a tour of the dog and cat kennels and introduced them to the offices and staff. He explained the various duties and functions of the SPCA to them and answered as many questions as he could. “We found this so refreshing coming from our younger generation,” Kingston said. Everyone, animals and staff, was very excited about the visit and the SPCA staff is looking forward to helping the learners their school project.
Condolences to Igesund Family The African Peoples Convention (APC) would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to Gordon Igesund, the National Coach of the South African soccer team as well as his family for their loss. APC wish the Igesund family strength during this difficult time and we would like to assure you that during this time of bereavement your pain is felt by all South Africans. Igesund Snr passed away on Monday, 10 March 2014 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, four children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The recent heavy down pour has, according to weather services, broken a 14 year record, this is however no record to be excited about. The recent rain has been interfering in the daily routine for many Gauteng citizens. Many activities which we often take for granted have over the past three weeks become the subject of careful consideration. After two weeks of non-stop rain many parts of Gauteng have been flooded, with some residents already calling for help from disaster management. This has raised a number of questions in my mind, the leading being; “what is the status of Gauteng’s readiness to deal with any natural disaster?” It’s no secret I’m a lover of the of the John F. Kennedy quote:” the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining”. In the situation we find ourselves in, Kennedy’s words are a little too late. I mean how much confidence do the states of the roads inspire? My answer is: none at all. I cannot trust that a government, unable

to repair a pothole, could possibly be be adequately equipped to deal with the aftermath of a natural disaster. The second question I have is one for the citizen; when are we going to give credit to the government where they have performed? In as much as we have experienced flooding in areas of the province, the flooding is not a trend, in most instances drainage systems have been able to cope with the heavy downpour and that, in my books, deserves at least a mention. Maybe our problem is not the pothole, but the inability to spot government efforts. Take it from a citizen who has not been directly affected by floods, I would rather live with a pothole. Mmusi visits Bedfordview
BELIEVE: DA’s Gauteng Premier Candidate; Mmusi Maimane, believes in the provinces potential. DA’s Gauteng Premier Candidate, Mmusi Maimane, stopped over in Bedfordview on Tuesday 11 March. Maimane’s visit forms part of the DA’s election campaign, which carries the hopes of the party winning the Gauteng Province and loosening the ruling party’s reigns after this year’s election. Maimane was greeted by a welcome dance prepared by the DA Youth. The intimate meeting of residents was addressed by the charismatic DA leader at the Bedfordview Town Hall. Addressing the residents from their level as opposed to using the stage platform, Mmusi confessed his growing appreciation of the diversity embodied by the Eastrand. In the introduction of his address he explained that the ANC is not the enemy and related a story which highlighted what he refers to as the

‘metaphoric we.’ “The first time I voted, I made a mark next to the ANC’s logo. I was compelled by the legacy of Apartheid which led black people to emphasise the group at the expense of the individual. The ANC we voted for was the progressive ANC of Nelson Mandela and Mbeki. We cannot be naïve though, the ANC today, under President Zuma, has failed and it is therefore time for change,” said Maimane. The DA speaks of a Gauteng province which has over 2 million unemployed people while the ANC boasts of creating 5000 unsustainable extended public works jobs. “I have visited many parts of the province and what we encounter is unacceptable. If we really want to address our challenges we need to create an environment which is conducive for businesses to thrive, it means eliminating the red-tape which makes it difficult for start-up businesses to thrive.” Maimane went on to address, among other talking points: BEE, the economy, jobs. “Under President Zuma’s administration, the economy has shed 1.4 Million jobs, and this has forced South Africa to a regression visible through Xenophobia and Afrophobia. BEE is a necessary program, we cannot ignore historical imbalances, but the program was never meant to penalize business. BEE will propel change if given to the right government,” Maimane said. Quotas do not put the proper person in the office and that actually works against the aims of balancing the scale, he added. In his closing statement Mmusi compared the democratic process to the game of cricket, where one team places a target during their batting innings. According to Mmusi, that initial score does not determine a winner, the winner can only be determined once the other team has chased their total. “ANC has played their innings and come 7 May 2014, ons sal hulle ‘n pakslae gee”.
Serrero court appearance postponed The trial of Owen Serrero was postponed on Monday 10 March due to him not being in court. Serrero is in custody, suspected of being linked to the attempted murder of officers investigating a case against Radovan Krejcir. As a result of Serrero’s failure to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, a later date for the hearing was set (17 March). Prosecutor Penny Pillay expressed disappointment at Serrero’s contempt saying “It is difficult to find someone who does not want to be found in a full holding cell. On his next appearance he will be dragged out of the cell to court if necessary.” Serrero faces an attempted murder charge, three charges of robbery, two of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, three of motor vehicle theft, one of contravening traffic laws, one of interfering with an investigation and one of escaping from custody. Two of Serrero’s co-accused were denied bail in February. During earlier court appearances Serrero complained of ill-treatment at the Pretoria Central Police Station. At time of going to print no further updates were available on the case.

20 years of water delivery
The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa, together with the Premier of Mpumalanga Province Mr. David Mabuza, officially launch the 2014 National Water Week (17 – 23 March), as well as the Bushbuckridge Integrated Water Scheme in Mpumalanga yesterday. The awareness week campaign has the theme “Water is Life - 20 Years of Water Delivery for Social and Economic
Development”. The theme coincides with South Africa’s celebrations of 20 years of freedom and democracy. This year, the Department will celebrate the success of Government’s water delivery programmes and management during the two decades of democracy. This is an important achievement given the backlog inherited in 1994. Two decades ago, around 14 million people did not have access to safe drinking
water and some 21 million people did not have access to a basic level of sanitation. In the 20 years since democracy, the Department has provided water to millions of South Africans with access to clean water. As custodians of this awareness week, the Department of Water Affairs is encouraging all South Africans to focus on the need to restore and preserve the integrity of this most precious resource.
New Ekurhuleni refuse removal calendar Residents in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan district must take note of the new calendar for dustbin collections and waste removal. The new calendar was implemented this month and the dates shown here are fixed for the rest of the year. South Africa’s National Water Week is from 17 - 23 March and while a lot has been said about the quality of water around the country, it should not detract from the importance of drinking adequate water during the day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So while we all know it is important to drink enough liquid during the day, do you know how much and what you should be drinking? Health professionals recommend that women drink eight glasses, or 2 litres of water per day and that men need even more, up to 12 glasses of water per day, 3 litres. Peter Jordan, Principal Officer at Fedhealth, said that we should take care not to drink too much fruit juice, flavoured water, sweetened sports drinks and sweetened tea and coffee. “Rather eat fruit and drink water to get your fluid intake,” Jordan said. “You can always enhance the flavour of water by adding lemon, cucumber slices, mint leaves or pieces of fruit.” Is tap water as safe as bottled water? According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who oversee bottled water and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who regulate tap water, the two are generally comparable in terms of safety. In other words the choice of tap or bottled is mostly a matter of personal preference. However, the EPA does not regulate private wells so, if your tap water comes from a private well, you should test your water frequently (at least every year) for contaminants. “It is important to note that some people are more vulnerable to getting sick from contaminants in drinking water than others. You may be in this group if you are undergoing chemotherapy, living with HIV/AIDS or have received a transplant. Pregnant women, the elderly and children also may be at greater risk. It is always a good idea to ask your doctor about whether you should take additional precautions, such as boiling tap water or drinking bottled water,” says Jordan.

No free ticket to complain
This past Saturday (15 March) was World Consumer Rights Day. World Consumer Rights Day was established on 15 March 1983 to promote consumer rights around the world. Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman, Advocate Neville Meville said the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) may be there to protect you when you’re buying goods and services, but it’s not a free ticket to complain. He says consumers need to understand they also have responsibilities before laying a complaint against a retailer, manufacturer or distributor. Below is advice from Advocate Meville to consider when shopping: Understand marketing material and contracts Under the CPA, suppliers are obliged to ensure that every notice, document or visual representation of the product must be in plain language. If you don’t understand something, you’re entitled to ask for an explanation before signing, especially if it is a big ticket item such as a house, car or furniture. Always read the fine print before purchasing to save yourself hassle and unnecessary costs, if the contract is in plain language, and you sign, you will be held liable. Prices must be accurate It may happen that the price displayed on the item or shelf does not match the price you’re charged at the till. By law, the supplier is bound by the lowest price displayed, unless it is an obvious error or it has been tampered with. It’s the consumer’s responsibility to first check with a shelf packer if you are unsure of the price and to check the till slip to ensure you’ve not been overcharged. You are within your rights to ask for the lower price. Watch out for exclusions Before signing a contract, be on the alert for warning clauses and read them to find out which risks you will not be covered for before you enter into the agreement. This is because suppliers must bring any risk of injury or death, adverse term or exclusion of liability to the attention of the consumer before they enter into the transaction. Especially look out for highlighted terms in contracts and make sure you understand
what’s not covered. Follow instructions While a supplier is responsible for any harm caused as a result of inadequate instructions or warnings about hazards associated with the use of a product, you may have no claim for damages if you haven’t read the instructions or warnings. Always read all the packaging and information booklets before using a new product – whether it’s a washing machine or toy. Beware of on rolling over contracts It’s easy to simply forget about renewing your television subscription, security services or cell phone contract, but it’s important to read all correspondence sent from a supplier and give notice in time if you do not want the contract to continue. Suppliers must inform you that a fixed term agreement is about to end and will roll over onto a month-by-month basis with or without new terms. Make sure you aren’t being charged extra for services or additions you don’t really need. Beware of grey goods You may be willing to pay less for reconditioned or “grey” goods (imported without the authority of the manufacturer), but then need to accept the increased risk of defects and that there’s no manufacturer’s warranty cover. Read the rules of competitions It’s a real win if you bag a prize in a promotional competition, but you could be disappointed if you haven’t read the rules beforehand and you end up not qualifying. Request the rules from the organiser to ensure that you are eligible to enter the contest and that you are happy with the conditions, such as collecting a prize in a distant location, having to listen to a two hour promotional talk on your weekend away win or having your face appearing in the company’s media campaign. Check the sales record or till slip details Under the CPA, suppliers must provide a sales record or till slip containing a comprehensive list of details. Check the correctness of these details and keep it in a safe place. The sales record is your copy of the agreement and proof of purchase. You will also need it if you wish to return goods, get a refund or ask for defective goods to be repaired. Make sure goods are fit for purpose Consumers are entitled to receive goods that are fit for the purpose for which they are generally intended. If, however, a consumer requires something for a particular purpose. They should ask the sales person if the item is suitable for that purpose and record the answer. The consumer has the right to expect that the goods will be suitable for the specific purpose that the consumer mentioned. Ask for identification All marketing, delivery, repairs or installation employees must wear a badge or provide identification under the CPA, so don’t get duped into buying something from a conman. Be cautious and insist callers or people coming to your premises show you their official badge or identification card. It’s also a good idea to take note of the person’s name for record keeping purposes and if you need to lay a complaint or compliment later on.

Bedfordview Security guards commended successes Possession of dagga On Thursday 6 March at about 14:00 an officer was busy conducting a stop and search in Kruin Street at Klopper Park when he stopped a white bakkie. When the officer asked to search the occupants of the vehicle, he discovered a packet of dagga in the pocket of one of the passengers. The officer arrested the suspect for possession of dagga. Investigations were conducted by Bedfordview SAPS. At the time of going to the print, the suspect had already appeared in the Germiston Court and the case had been postponed to a later date.
Possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle On Friday 7 March at about 08:30 an officer was patrolling the R24 highway in Bedfordview when he stopped a silver VW Polo. He asked the driver of the car to search it and permission was granted. The officer noticed that the licence disc of the car was fake; he tested the car’s registration check and found that car was hi-jacked from Dobsonville in 2012. The driver was arrested for possession of stolen property. The female suspect was taken in for questioning. The suspect has already appeared in the Edenvale Court, and the case postponed to a later date.
Interfering with a police /traffic official A Bedfordview traffic officer was on duty doing law enforcement when she noticed a Mercedes cutting through a channelling lane; she stopped the car, approached the driver and explained why she had pulled the vehicle over and requested the driver for her licence so she could issue a fine. When the driver gave the licence to the officer she asked why she was not chasing criminals or taxi drivers. A passenger (lady) started screaming and shouting at the officer and taking photos with her phone saying “this country is not good, why is she not stopping taxis?” A colleague came and tried to calm the passenger, but she couldn’t. The passenger was arrested and the officers explained to her the reason for her arrest. At the time of going to the print, the suspect was due to appear in court. Investigations are continuing.
Primrose SAPS arrested two suspects with the help of company security officers for stealing a water pump. A company security officer notified police that he saw three males inside the Germiston North sub-station and called for backup. A colleague quickly responded and they chased the three suspects and cornered two of them. “As police we are appealing to the community to note that crime does not pay. We will send all criminals to jail. We would like to thank the two guards for working hand-in-hand with the police,” Primrose SAPS wrote. Two of the three suspects were arrested at Stanley Road on 27 February and they will appear in court soon.

Suspects apprehended for car theft Primrose police arrested two suspects aged 26 and 30 for theft of a motor vehicle at their parking lot. While SAPS members were patrolling they noticed a vehicle towing another at Premula Road. Our police became suspicious and stopped the cars to inquire about the vehicle and there was no clear explanation as to who the towed vehicle belonged to.

As a result of the suspicious answers the police phoned the owner of the vehicle (whom is known by the officers) and asked him if he had given permission for the car to be towed from the police station parking lot. The owner confirmed that he had given no order that the vehicle be towed, so the police arrested the two suspects. Suspects will remain in custody pending their court appearance.

On 21 March we celebrate Human Rights Day in South Africa. Even though this day is spent being grateful for our rights, it still resonates the serious events that took place at Sharpeville on this same day, 54 years ago. On 21 March 1960 South Africa was under the apartheid regime, which was introduced in 1948, after the Nationalist Party came into power. The segregation of black and white people under this regime was enforced by laws that governed and limited the rights of particularly non-white citizens in South Africa. One such law that restricted the freedom of the non-white citizens was the Pass Law, and the Sharpeville massacre was a direct uprising against this law. The pass law stated that non-white citizens were not allowed to travel around or work in urban areas without a pass book. This meant that legally, nonwhite persons could not leave the rural areas without a permit from local authorities. The pass book, which was similar to an ID book, granted persons older than 16 permission to be in urban areas. It was a criminal offence to be unable to present your pass book when required to do so by the police and many people were arrested and thrown in jail for it. On 21 March 1960 the official anti-pass protest took place. The Pan Africanist Congress (a spin-off party of the ANC) planned an anti-pass campaign and the Sharpeville uprising marked the start of the campaign. On 21 March 1960, hundreds of black citizens arranged to gather at the Sharpeville police station without their pass books; to present themselves for arrest. The mob grew unstable and police battled to keep them under control, after which police fire with sharp-point ammunition on the crowd, which included men, women and children. At the end of the day, 69 people were killed and 180 were wounded. In hindsight, this uprising was indirectly an attack on the apartheid regime

nominations INDUSTRY DARLING: Mi casa’s front man; J-Something announced some of the nominees Twenty years of musicianship celebrated A number of new kids on the music block dominate the major categories for the landmark 20th Annual South African Music Awards – with some familiar favourites also creeping into the running for SA’s most prestigious music competition. The nominees for SAMA 20 were announced amid great excitement and anticipation at Sun International’s Carnival City in Ekurhuleni on Thursday 13 March. The nominees were announced by a panel of artists including, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, Jabu Hlongwane, Mi Casa’s J-Something and Khaya Mthetwa among others. Newcomers; Gangs of Ballet, Naima Kay and Nakhane Touré, are set to rock the SAMA’s with 11 nominations between them. Mi Casa, who are becoming an industry favorite, together with come-back kids; Mafikizolo walked away with four nominations each, both including a nomination for the sought after album of the year award. Also bagging four SAMA nominations are Mafikizolo, whose comeback release Reunited has been crowned with nods for Best Pop Album, Best Collaboration, Duo or Group of the Year and Album of the Year. David du Plessis, the Chief Operating Officer of the Recording Industry of SA (RISA), said this year’s event will be special in more ways than one: “Not only are we celebrating 20 years of South Africa’s premier music awards, we are also commemorating the country’s 20th anniversary of democracy.”

Du Plessis said that as a symbolic tribute to the first democratic elections, which were held on 27 and 28 April 1994, the SAMA 20 awards ceremony will take place exactly 20 years later, on 28 April 2014, at the Sun City Superbowl. As always, all eyes will be on the Record of the Year category, which is determined by a public vote. The nominees for this award will be announced shortly, after which fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite song and artist of 2013.
Jaziel Brothers Bebe Winans was met by thousands of adoring fans on his return to South Africa for the live recording of his CD and DVD. SA votes 2014 As the country prepares to go to the polls in May, South Africa Votes 2014 (an independently funded project that will run throughout the election campaign) intends to add real voices to the swirl of newsgathering, comment, and opinion surrounding the election. Independent journalist and Managing Editor of SA Votes 2014, Khadija Patel (formerly a senior correspondent at the Daily Maverick) heads up a team comprising of journalists, writers, bloggers and social media specialists from all walks of life, ranging from citizen journalists to renowned international South African journalists working for Al Jazeera and The Mercury. Describing the project, Khadija Patel said the SA VOTES 2014 will make politics relevant to South Africans again, “Election season really is an extended silly season. But there is a greater story in this election than a barrage of ‘he said’, ‘she said’. We want to tell the story that goes beyond that, the story of the political
spectacle in South Africa as it’s translated into people’s opinions, their attitudes, and their experience of the country”. “People often get put off by politics, because people and their stories often get ignored by rhetoric and debate, SA Votes 2014 intends to be part of an alternate telling of the South African election story of real stories of real people,” said Patel. One of the features of SA Votes 2014 is to work with young journalists, who will be given the chance to contribute to the debate of South Africa’s future. “We hope to work with these young journalists from all levels of South African society. We will have them tramping around towns and cities, speaking to people and then telling us what they’ve been speaking about. It’s about the people they quote, the people whose story we want to tell. EFF up for election The Economic Freedom Fighters sold berets, T-shirts and posters and gathered donations from members in order to pay the deposit fee to contest the general elections. Julius Malema, EFF Leader, said the biggest donation of R100 000 came from a member who lives in Pretoria. However, the EFF would have to pay the money back after the elections to members who donated, he said. The deposit for parties contesting the National Assembly is R200 000 and R45 000 per province that they contest. Last week, the EFF took President Jacob Zuma, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor, and the IEC to court over the amount. The High Court in Pretoria dismissed the EFF’s application for an interdict relating to the payment of the deposit to the IEC. Not more than 50 EFF supporters gathered

outside the IEC office where Malema, along with Dali Mpofu and Floyd Shivambu, handed over the party’s candidate lists. The three entered the building carrying three cardboard boxes containing the lists. On the lists, Malema said the EFF had submitted a National Assembly list, province to national list, and provincial legislature lists. The party would contest nationally and all nine provinces. “Our list is 99.9 percent gender balanced, it has generational mix and geographical mix,” he said. Malema would not say whether he was the EFF’s presidential candidate or give any indication of who was on the lists. By law, you can apply for a special vote if you can’t travel to your voting station because you are physically infirm, disabled or pregnant; or can’t vote at your voting station on Election Day. Please note that applications must be hand-delivered to the IEC offices, but can be delivered by a proxy on behalf of the individual applying. Special voting will take place over two days: Monday 5 May and Tuesday 6 May. The draft calendar indicates that special votes will take place both at the voting station and for home visits on both days. This is a departure from previous years where the Monday was dedicated to home visits and the voting station did not open for voting. This has a massive impact on election operations, party agents should be identified to be present at the voting station on both
days ahead of Election Day itself, and also mobile agents to follow the IEC teams for home visits. There are 22 265 voting stations around South Africa. Voter Queries: • If a voter expects to be overseas on 30 April and not in the country by 7 May, the time for application closed on the 12 March already and he/she will not be able to cast a vote. • If a voter will be in the country on 5 or 6 May, but not on 7 May then he/she must apply for a special vote between 7 and 17 April and vote on one of the special voting days. • If a voter will not be overseas and able to go to an embassy, consulate or mission on 30 April but will also not be in South Africa between 5 and 7 May, then they simply do not fall into any window where we or the IEC can assist. DA appeals e-tolls judgement The Democratic Alliance appealed the judgement handed down by the Western Cape High Court on 13 March in the party’s case against the unconstitutional passing of the E-Tolling Act. The DA has argued that the people of Gauteng were denied a voice against e-tolling because the law was not debated in the provincial legislature. While the application was dismissed it is significant that both parties will pay their own costs. “We are studying the judgement and will
issue further comment at a later stage. The fight against e-tolling must continue not just in the courts, but also at the ballot box on 7 May. Gauteng deserves a government that is prepared to fight against the unjust system of e-tolling. We are committed to calling a referendum when elected, so that the people of Gauteng can have a voice by voting directly against e-tolls. The fight is still within the people of Gauteng. REACHING HIGH: St Benedict’s Marc Andrews’ sights are set on 2015 World Tour The South African Wakeboard tour is made up of three stops in 2014, two of which have already been completed. The first leg of the tour took place at the Vaal River on 7 to 9 February with 46 participants in various categories. The second leg was in Port Elizabeth on 28 Feb to 2 March in which 36 athletes participated. St Benedict’s pupil, Marc Andrews, who is a first time participant, competed in the novice division of both tours. He took first place in both legs of the tour, winning by 30 points off the second place in both events. Marc now turns his focus towards the third and final legs of the competition which will take place in Cape Town on 28 March. The top two Junior Men and numerous Pro Men and Women will be selected for the SA Squad for the World Tour in 2015. SA is currently bidding to host the World Tour. Marc’s sights are set on participating in the 2015 World Tour and he will be training hard throughout summer and winter to achieve this goal, working with ropes, footage and the calling of the tricks to the judges on board the boat. A great deal of Marc’s training takes part at the Cable Park in Midrand during the week and at the Vaal River on weekends St Benedict’s applaud Marc’s dedication and commitment and wish him all the best for the future.
Rowing greatness Holy Rosary Rowing Club recently partook in the 40th South African Schools Rowing Championships 2014, held at Roodeplaat Dam. The school placed third overall in the girl’s school division, with a total of 3 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.

Inter-high diving success
St Andrew’s School for Girls hosted the Inter-high Diving Competition on Tuesday 4 March. Despite the heavy rain, the girls finished third overall out of 10 schools. St Andrew’s is very proud of their divers.

Girls night out with Ster Kinekor On Wednesday 12 March Ster Kinekor at Eastgate held their second Girlfriends Getaway event for the ladies. Ster Kinekor launched this new initiative in February this year as a way to make the movie experience at their cinemas more unique and exciting. Once a month a movie is selected for the ladies and all the girls who come to watch the movie are then spoilt with vouchers and prizes. By Lance Van Wyk I believe, that there is no greater pleasure than watching a great movie. Even more so if that great movie is on “The big screen” with breath taking 3D scenes and rumbling surround sound. One such a movie that I know of currently on the circuit: The nut job.This animated movie will keep the whole family entertained and will have tears running; either from laughter or from living yourself into the strife of Surly squirrel and his friends. Who knows we all might learn a few lessons from this fable, self worth, sharing, respecting your friends and selfless sacrifice for a greater purpose. You may just recognize the voices of Liam Neeson, Brendan Fraser and Will Arnett. So join the park animals on there adventure as they venture into the city to gather food for the winter, make new friends, stand up to oppression, foil some criminal’s plot and share in their peril and laughter, beware of the sudden twist that you might not expect. After a disappointing encounter with the Sharks last week, the Lions have fought back fiercely against the Blues to claim a second victory. On Saturday, 15 March, the Lions beat the Blues 39-36 at Ellis Park and settled in fourth place on the Super Rugby log. The Blues currently rank eleventh. Both teams remained scoreless deep into the first half. The Lions only started their onslaught 30 minutes into the game when Blues player Charlie Faumuina received a yellow card. Faf de Klerk was the first player to score a try in the first half and after Marnitz Boshoff’s conversion; the home team was soon leading 7-0. Boshoff continued his lucky streak and kicked over a drop goal shortly after the first try. After a quick tap, wing Courtnall Skosan ran with the ball and scored the second try. Boshoff once again converted the try and at half time the Lions were comfortably leading 17-0. The Lions continued strong into the second half, with Boshoff sending another drop goal over the goalposts; and the team scored three tries in total. The Blues slowly gained momentum in the second half when Chris Noakes made a penalty conversion, after which Charles Piutau and Bryn Hall scored two tries within two minutes. Three more tries and a penalty kick followed. Benji Marshall broke past the defence in the final minute and Simon Hickey converted the try. The Blues fought back hard, but the Lions managed to hold onto their win.

International paddlers to tackle Orange River For the first time since its inception three years ago, the Green Kalahari Canoe Marathon will feature international paddlers. Top paddlers from Germany and the Czech Republic will join the highly competitive field of South African competitors to tackle the majestic Orange River from 20 – 22 March. 2010 World Cup silver medallist and 2011 European champion Achim Overbeck will team up with fellow German Tobias Bong, who took the gold in the single men’s race at the 2012 World Championships in France. It is expected that this dynamic duo will definitely add some excitement to this year’s K2 battle in the company of current world champions Hank McGregor, Thulani Mbanjwa and Sean Rice as well as Jasper Mocke, Lance King, Ivan Kruger and Louw Van Riet. Jakub Adam and his sister Anna Adamova from the Czech Republic will make their debut on South Africa’s largest river. Jakub will again pair up with former world champion Cam Schoeman with whom he achieved a podium finish at the recent Dusi marathon. Anna will join forces with former Green Kalahari champion Abbie Adie and this partnership will definitely turn up the heat in the women’s K2 division. Event organiser Gawie Nieuwoudt is

The time has come again for the big hitters and the clever miserly bowlers to showcase their talents in the shortest version of the game. The Indian IPL equivalent, but for your country adds a whole new flavour. My feeling is that the likes of Chris Gayle, David Warner, Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers will certainly feature as the top batsmen, including bowlers Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson ( if fit), Saeed Ajmal and Sunil Narine. The host’s Bangladesh, as expected easily overcame Afghanistan in the tournament opener on Sunday chasing a paltry 73 runs and winning by nine wickets. The tournament is very open and any one of eight teams can win. The toss of the coin does not really matter here, as the wicket and change in conditions during a game will not really play a role in the outcome of any result. It will be down to the strategy of the team management and the on field players as to who stands up to the situation of each game in going forward to the last stages of the tournament. You would assume that Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be the semi finalist’s, but who knows. Don’t count out the West Indies as they have surprised many a top nation in this format. T20 Cricket is such a funny game, where a certain amount of luck is involved in favoring the brave and in the past, a freak result has caused the downfall of one of the bigger nations. Australia are hoping that star studded bowler Mitchell Johnson recovers fully from his toe injury in time, so that the Aussies can advance to the final in a tournament that they have never won. The Proteas will have their work cut out as they have never really mastered this format. Coach Domingo and his management staff will definitely need to rethink their game plans if this past week vs the Aussies is anything to go by. You can’t possibly have AB De Villiers and David Miller being starved of batting time. I would have Miller open the innings; and bat De Villers at number three. This is a must if we are going to make an impact; and with a bit of luck, the Proteas can overcome their battle to win a major tournament.
