A CHANCE IN A MILLION TO BECOME THE NEW FACE OF YOUR COMMUNITY.
It’s that time of the year again – tame TIMES is going pink for a month! You would have noticed the pink-trimmed pages and special pink finishes. Pink is my favourite colour so I really love the new look – still, this temporary transformation isn’t about making our pages look good. This is our way of showing our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and for all those who are bravely fighting cancer or supporting a loved one living with the disease. It’s also our way of acknowledging those who have lost someone special to cancer. Most of us have at some stage been impacted by cancer and can identify with the pink of October – some of us with tears. We extend our heartfelt condolences to our colleague Stephanie Els who lost a muchloved aunt to cancer last week.

The pink of October is a powerful message that nobody stands alone in the fight against cancer. This is something that affects the community and as a community we need to stand together in support of those affected by cancer. There’s a saying, “Be strong enough to stand alone, be yourself enough to be set apart and be wise enough to stand together when the time comes.” The pink is also a message of hope. In the midst of all the negative things in society, there is always hope and something to look forward to. This week also marks the announcement of our first ever Face of Tame Times competition which will be held at the end of November (see page 3). This October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remember the powerful message behind pink: here’s to standing together, to hope and to courage. As they say: “Pink isn’t just a colour, it’s an attitude.”

He explained the City had launched a Springin2-Summer campaign themed “Expect only Amazing,” at the annual Rock Da Shades Spring picnic, naming some of the exciting upcoming events. “The Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz evening is held every second Friday of a month and hosts the cream of the crop of South Africa’s music scene,” he said. “On October 9, Sibongile Khumalo will be headlining the event, which will also see Zahara, Flatoe and comedian Thapelo Mametja on stage.” He continued: “On 10 October, the Wild Waters complex will again host the H2O Final Wave party.” Lovers of choral music will be serenaded by the angelic voices of choristers competing for the number one spot in the Melting Pot National Choral Festival on 30 October and 1 November. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Figures Models and Talent Agency, Bedfordview was built on the dream of owner Sylvia Dash. The Bedfordview branch of the successful modelling and talent development franchise was opened at the beginning of the year. Being forced into a career she had no passion for was a challenge Dash faced for 15 years. “I lost my identity and all that I stood for, working in a corporate environment,” she said. “When my dad passed away and my company became party to a corporate take-over, I decided to reinvent my life and reexamine my priorities.” This is when she decided to pursue her life-long passion for modelling. “I heard that the Bedfordview franchise of Figures was up for the taking and the rest you could say was history. Youth development is my passion and when I heard this was what Figures was about, I knew this was where I wanted to be.” Dash said she fell in love with the modelling profession when she trained as a model years ago. “Figures is more than just an agency and modelling academy. It is an opportunity for identification and development of talent. It is a school for acting, presenting, public speaking, singing, and dancing, among other skills.” Since taking ownership of the agency, she has completed her NLP, Life and Executive Coaching qualification and believes this will strengthen her current programmes. Now that Dash is living her dream, she wants to extend this dream to the community, which is one of the reasons Figures Models, Bedfordview has teamed up with the tame TIMES and Stoneridge Centre to host the Face of tame TIMES competition. “The youth of today are not given many opportunities to develop their talent or follow their passions. It is all about a structured school environment and sport,” said Dash. “In order to be well balanced, successful individuals you need to be given opportunity and choice and this is what Figures and this competition is all about.” POISED: A young model shows confidence at a recent showcase event held by Figures Models, Bedfordview.

OPINION PIECE BY PALESA YATES Supermarket openings in South Africa routinely attract desperately long and winding queues of jobseekers, most of them would-be cashiers. Although eager to embrace a 12-hour working day for a few thousand rands a month, few are starry-eyed about the actual job. After all, five-year-olds dream of becoming princesses, teachers, firemen, singers and soccer-players – not cashiers. Cashier jobs, however, require only Matric and verbal skills, with some retail experience an added bonus; and Statistics SA tells us that our country’s unemployment rate is 25%, higher than that in the USA during last century’s Great Depression. Officially, one in four of our workforce is out of a job, but - according to the so-called expanded definition of unemployment, which includes those who have given up looking for work - just over a third are unemployed. The situation for our youth is even worse, because so many are not even able to prepare for careers. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training, 3.2 million 15- to 24-year-old South Africans in 2011 were not in education, employment or training. Recruitment website Payscale calculates R41 728 to be the average annual salary of cashiers in South Africa, who earn from R26 000 to R67 000 a year. Most (85%), they say, are women with one to four years on the job - and very few last longer than 10 years behind the till. Payscale suggests the positions of receptionist and office administrator as the next rung on the career ladder of a cashier.
The Edenvale Philatelic Society (EPS) will be celebrating National Postage Stamp Day at Greenstone Shopping Centre on Saturday 10 October. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in postage stamps to see some varied and fascinating collections and to speak to people in the know. Members of the EPS will have a number of exhibits on show. There will also be a competition featuring a large jar with over 1 000 stamps which can be won by the person whose guess of how many there are in it is closest to the actual number. Sample bags of postage stamps will also be handed out. “People can bring their collections for discussion or simply stop by for a chat about the exhibits or collecting in general,”

”A 12-HOUR WORKING DAY FOR A FEW THOUSAND RANDS A MONTH”
Studying after hours is an option, but a strenuous one while holding down a job that requires you to start and finish work in the dark during winter. Retail hours also take their toll on family life and personal time, as many retailers require their staff to work weekends and public holidays. Single mothers have a particularly hard time, because, with their day off often being Monday or Tuesday, many are forced to leave their children unsupervised over the weekend. They may also not be able to cook Christmas lunch for their families or vote on election day. Cashiers who work in filling station shops have the added difficulty of night shifts, working from 6pm to 7am. Many women working in these shops during the early hours of the morning will not admit to being concerned about their security, saying that they are protected by the visits of traffic cops and police officers who pop in frequently for free cups of coffee. Whether they are genuinely unconcerned or simply feel obliged to maintain customer relations, however, is a matter for debate. People hired for this job have to be patient and diplomatic enough to deal with drunk customers who come in after an evening of clubbing and make unreasonable demands; they have to serve impatient commuters first thing in the morning at the end of a long night shift; they have to turn a blind eye to the purchase of strange items at odd times. Of course, every job has its own inconveniences and difficulties; but the ergonomics of the seating arrangements at shop tills should be reviewed. Why is it that 90% of cashiers are forced to twist towards the left while ringing up groceries? Although it is probably because most of the population is right-handed, it is surprising Google does not know about ‘cashier syndrome.’ It would be common-sense to expect those working behind tills to present in doctors’ rooms with repetitive stress disorders featuring shortened obliques and left shoulder muscles, coupled with overextended right elbows. One exasperated cashier interviewed by this reporter did, however, say, “This chair is biting me …” So how can shoppers help? Not much effort is needed, because a friendly smile and greeting will go a long way.
said EPS President Colin Bousfield. He explained collecting stamps was an absorbing and educational hobby which was available to anyone and everyone. “Collections vary from formal countryby-country types to themes such as trains, planes, birds and butterflies. While the average age of stamp collectors is probably over 60, we are really keen to attract younger people. Foremost in our minds is to promote stamp collecting as a fun hobby.” The EPS’s exhibition will be on the upper level near Entrance 5, close to Woolworths. MOTIVATED: Household Consumers’ League chairperson Jennifer Tselentis with dedicated staff from Pick n Pay The tame TIMES and Household Consumers’ League (HCL) of Bedfordview have teamed together in a quest to find the best cashier the area has to offer. Residents are encouraged to submit their nominees for best cashier to loizides@b2einternet.co.za, as well as a reason as to why they have nominated a specific cashier. “We want the community to be mindful of their shopping experiences and to mention shop attendants who have gone beyond the call of duty in performing their services,” said HCL chairperson Jennifer Tselentis. She gave as an example an incident at Checkers, Balfour Park in which shop attendants comforted an elderly woman in the store after she had collapsed in the shop and needed emergency attention. “The shop attendants held the woman’s hand and comforted her, notifying a doctor in the centre, who ran into the store and saw to it the woman received the medical assistance she needed. It was remarkable to see this.” The best cashier will be announced at the HCL’s year-end meeting.

Being a housewife or having a flexi-hour job doesn’t mean taking a backseat to mainstream community activity. Union (Sancu) and members attend their meetings throughout the year, giving their input when necessary. “Any consumer complaints or issues brought to our attention are taken up by ourselves and when necessary, referred to Sancu,” explained HCL spokesperson Ina Loizides. The group has monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of every month, an exciting ‘bring and buy’ day in November and an annual Christmas lunch. Members go on interesting outings once a month, enjoying visits to consumer-related outlets such as factories, cultural venues, museums and places of arts and crafts. The main objective of HCL is to establish co-operation between consumers and businesses. “We also strive to ensure the constant improvement of living and working standards and to protect the interests of consumers through acting as a liaison between customers and manufacturers,” says Loizides. MOTORISTS ROBBED AFTER BEING FOLLOWED HOME Heather Djunga
heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za
Residents are warned to remain vigilant when driving home after visiting local shopping centres, especially after they have visited a banking facility. Two incidents have been reported to the tame TIMES in which motorists were followed to their home destination by perpetrators from a local shopping centre. In the first, a woman was followed home
from the bank after drawing a large sum of money. Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer, told the tame TIMES the woman had noticed she was being followed and had stopped at a local garage for a short while, eventually driving off, believing the threat had passed. When she arrived at her townhouse complex, she was attacked by the men who had
followed her, who took the money and her car before fleeing. Her car was recovered in Sebenza and Edenvale police continue to investigate. In a separate incident a woman and her husband were robbed at gunpoint in the parking area of a Linksfield medical facility. “Three black men driving a white BMW sportscar boxed us in as we were parking

the car,” said Shereen Goolam. “As I got out of our car, I had my handbag hanging on my arm and two of the men climbed out of their car, guns in hand, running towards us - one towards me and the other towards my husband.” She said one of the men held a gun to her head and instructed her to get into the car. “I told him that I need to get to my son who was going to be operated on soon. Three times he told me to get in and I gave him the same answer.” She said when the man told her to get into the car again, she decided to obey. “He took my bag from me and left. When I looked toward my husband, I saw the guy holding the gun in my husband’s mouth and told him to be quiet. He asked if my husband had a wallet to which he answered ‘no’ but proceeded to give him the cash in his pocket.” She said the men then took the car keys and left. The case is being handled by the Norwood police. Goolam said she believes she and her husband were followed from an Edenvale shopping centre, as they had just gone to the centre to pay the excess on their medical aid. Lieutenant Colonel Roberts said that motorists needed to be vigilant in checking to see whether they were being followed when driving home. “In the first instance, the woman did all the right things. She stopped at the garage and waited. However, she should have alerted security or police officials about the situation. Even if your suspicions are wrong, it is better not to take chances,” he said. “Always stop at a safe place if you think you are being followed and alert the police.”

SHOOT-OUT IN THE HEART OF BEDFORDVIEW Heather Djunga
heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za
Yellow tape, police cars, blazing sirens, and uniformed officers were the centre of a hive of activity in the heart of Bedfordview late Thursday morning last week. The corner of Kloof and Van Buuren roads was the scene of chaos after armed robbery suspects collided into a car while fleeing a crime scene in Terence Road, Bedfordview. The area had been cordoned off by the time the tame TIMES visited the scene, creating more than just traffic congestion on the road. For many, it was a reminder of the reality of crime in the community and of the need for the community to stand together against criminal activity, as Gavin Henry, Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) chair explained to the tame TIMES at the scene of the crime. Police and security officials are still trying to piece together the morning’s activities but according to Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, Bedfordview police spokesperson, it is believed that after robbing a house in Terence Road, just down the way, armed suspects sped down Van Buuren Road in their white BMW, crashing into a white Mercedes in the road, forcing the Merc into oncoming traffic. Fortunately the driver of the Merc, a woman, was unharmed. A security official from Lionsgate Security
Services, hearing the bang caused by the collision, had gone to attend to the scene. He was on his phone, trying to contact Emergency Services, when he felt a gun against his head. ROB KARAGLEN JEWELLERY STORE
A jewellery shop at the Karaglen Shopping Centre was held up by six men on Monday morning last week. Edenvale police crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said two of the men had entered the store around opening time, posing as customers. “One of them then held the door open for the others to enter,” he said. He said at the time there were four members of staff in the store and the men held them up before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of valuables. Lieutenant Colonel Roberts said in cases such as this a chaplain service was used to debrief staff members and Victim Support helped victims to settle after the incident. “Unfortunately a criminal looks like a ‘normal’ person,” he said, explaining why it was important to use your gut instincts when discerning suspicious behaviour. “In some instances, the criminal might come into the store wearing a cap and avoiding looking up so as not to have his face picked up by store cameras.” He said businesses should have the necessary safety precautions and an action plan, should this kind of event occur. “Liaise with your local security company to get a system put in place,” he said. Police are investigating.

Calvary Sanctuary is part of the Full Gospel Church of South Africa and embraces the fundamental teachings of Christ. It is their policy to be open to the body of Christ, which embraces all born-again Christians. One of their missions is “To do the work of Jesus here on earth.” That is why they took the step to offer the community a 10-week course o n c o m b a t ting drug and alcohol abuse, which is held by the church ever y Sunday evening at 18:00 a n d
which anyone is welcome to attend. After Senior Pastor George Pretorius and his wife did some research, they found out that there is a drug and alcohol abuse problem in the community involving both young and old people and were inspired to start doing something about it. Pastor George and Paulie decided to be the voice that speaks out against alcohol and drug abuse and started to get involved in a programme called “Bound” that tells a real drug and alcohol abuse story. They built up the necessary experience by going to offer the course to local schools and have now taken the step to offer it to everyone in the community. Pastor George had this to say: “People that sell drugs are busy messing up the lives of other people. I
want to encourage our community to stand together with our police to help fight this problem and catch all these drug dealers. I believe that these drug dealers have to serve their time if they are sentenced - but also in the process for them to get drug counselling and also for them to start a new life. With these results we can then all live in a free society with harmony.” If you have a drug or alcohol problem, or know someone who does, Pastor George and Paulie want to help you overcome it and find God. Dating after abuse
The trauma experienced in an abusive relationship is intense and damaging. Getting 011 862 8500 back on the scene to start dating again after something like physical or mental abuse in a previous relationship is understandably daunting. The good news however, is that with proper healing, you will be able to venture into a new relationship with confidence. One of the major areas of your life that will need repairing is your self-esteem. It is quite possible that, after an abusive relationship, your self-esteem is not what it used to be. Boosting your self-esteem should thus be your number one priority on the road to recovery. Spend time with yourself, start to love yourself again and focus on the idea that you deserve better. This will not happen overnight, so be patient with yourself and give yourself ample time for the healing to take place. Trusting yourself as well as others will be another area of concern. Do not blame yourself for the abuse and trust that only you know what is best for yourself. Trust that you are deserving of a loving and respectful relationship. Also, trust that you are much wiser and that you are now capable of spotting any warning signs that might ring a bell in any new relationship. Once you start dating again, you will most likely find that you are much more alert for any negative behaviour your new partner might display. This will enable you to leave before you fall victim again. Believe in yourself, pay attention to the process of healing, and rebuild your selfesteem and confidence. Remember, time is your friend and after healing the scars of the trauma, you will be better, stronger and wiser for it.

THE RACE IS ON: Advocate George Bizos gets the Mini Marathon started. Photo supplied Saheti School in Bedfordview recently hosted the fourth annual George Bizos Mini Marathon. The event consisted of a 4,2km and 8,4km race. The marathon was a fun family event that attracted 650 participants of all ages, both from the school as well as the broader community. Advocate George Bizos, a Life Vice President of the Saheti Board, started the race. Runners, walkers, babies in prams and dogs all formed part of the enthusiastic crowd that lined up to take part in this popular event. The aim of the initiative was to raise funds for an additional full award for the George Bizos Saheti Scholarship and Bursary Fund (GBSSBF). This fund attracts and assists pupils of outstanding ability who are in financial need to access secondary education at Saheti School. This year there were also 60 runners from Malvern Primary. Their participation was significant as Advocate George Bizos spent many of his childhood years in the Malvern area. Philip Venter, Saheti High School sports manager, said: “The George Bizos Mini Marathon has grown significantly since its inception, and is one of the highlights on our calendar. Participation by all communities is welcome, and we look forward to another bumper registration next year.”
The winners of the different categories were as follows: Male adults 4.2 km race: Dimitri Gonatas Female adults 4.2 km race: Andrea Zayonnakis Male Saheti High School 4.2 km race: Chris Valarakis Female Saheti High School 4.2 km race: Christina Marinakos Male Saheti Primary School 4.2 km race: Tristan Marle Female Saheti Primary School 4.2 km race: Hannah du Sautoy Male school-going non-Sahetians 4.2 km: Keegan Dally Female school-going non-Sahetians 4.2 km: Carmi BATTERY Vermaak FACTORY SHOP Cnr Hennie Alberts & Male adults 8.4 km race: Nowell Mbotwa Bosworth Street Female adults 8.4 km race: Gwen Muller Alrode South 011 868 5015/5202 Male Saheti High School 8.4 km race: Evan Marinakos Female Saheti High School 8.4 km race: Sinead Mason INVERTERS & Male Saheti Primary School 8.4 km race: Thomas Gibson DEEP CYCLE FOR ALL YOUR BATTERY NEEDS Female Saheti Primary School 8.4 km race: Zoi Komninos Cars, Trucks, Forklifts, Motor Bikes, Solar BATTERIES Systems, Generators, Gate Motors, Lawn Male school-going non-Sahetians 8.4 km: Ronald Molepo Mowers and Garage Doors.
