A CHANCE IN A MILLION TO BECOME THE NEW FACE OF YOUR COMMUNITY.

It’s that time of the year again – tame TIMES is going pink for a month! You would have noticed the pink-trimmed pages and special pink finishes. Pink is my favourite colour so I really love the new look – still, this temporary transformation isn’t about making our pages look good. This is our way of showing our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and for all those who are bravely fighting cancer or supporting a loved one living with the disease. It’s also our way of acknowledging those who have lost someone special to cancer. Most of us have at some stage been impacted by cancer and can identify with the pink of October – some of us with tears. We extend our heartfelt condolences to our colleague Stephanie Els who lost a muchloved aunt to cancer last week.

The pink of October is a powerful message that nobody stands alone in the fight against cancer. This is something that affects the community and as a community we need to stand together in support of those affected by cancer. There’s a saying, “Be strong enough to stand alone, be yourself enough to be set apart and be wise enough to stand together when the time comes.” The pink is also a message of hope. In the midst of all the negative things in society, there is always hope and something to look forward to. This week also marks the announcement of our first ever Face of Tame Times competition which will be held at the end of November (see page 3). This October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remember the powerful message behind pink: here’s to standing together, to hope and to courage. As they say: “Pink isn’t just a colour, it’s an attitude.”

The Ekurhuleni Metro has launched a new domestic lifestyle tourism campaign, called Spring-In2 Summer. “The City of Ekurhuleni is home to over 200 water bodies, and is the perfect leisure destination on hot summer days,” said Council spokesperson Themba Gadebe. He explained the City had launched a Springin2-Summer campaign themed “Expect only Amazing,” at the annual Rock Da Shades Spring picnic, naming some of the exciting upcoming events. “The Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz evening is held every second Friday of a month and hosts the cream of the crop of South Africa’s music scene,” he said. “On October 9, Sibongile Khumalo will be headlining the event, which will also see Zahara, Flatoe and comedian Thapelo Mametja on stage.” He continued: “On 10 October, the Wild Waters complex will again host the H2O Final Wave party.” Lovers of choral music will be serenaded by the angelic voices of choristers competing for the number one spot in the Melting Pot National Choral Festival on 30 October and 1 November. This competition is held annually in honour of the late Oliver Tambo. Also on 1 November, sportsmen and women BEDFORDVIEW / EDENVALE Tel: 011 862 8500

will be entertained at the City of Ekurhuleni’s 5150 African Championships. “This year the event will again be hosted at the pristine Germiston Lake Park,” he said. Member of Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Thumbu Mahlangu, explained Spring-In2-Summer is a campaign seeking to demystify the perception that Ekurhuleni is merely an industrial site in Gauteng. “It is intended to promote domestic tourism by informing local citizens of the leisure offerings in their own backyard,” he said. To usher in the New Year, the City of Ekurhuleni will again host the South African Open Golf Championship, which will be held from 7 to 11 January 2016.

SURPRISE TWIST IN KREJCIR’S ESCAPE PLAN News reports say Radovan Krejcir’s mother, Nadezda Krejcirova, is believed to be behind his foiled escape from prison.
