“It is very difficult. We used to be a family of five and now we are down to three. Poena was only nineteen. We just want justice to prevail,” -Dimitri Shokkos By Amy-Mae Campbell Retief Liebenberg, who is accused of killing Déwalt ‘Poena/Poenie’ Visser and his father Déwalt Visser on 31 October last year, briefly appeared in the Benoni Magistrate's court on Thursday, 6 February, to start his murder trial. However, due to the fact that investigations are still underway, the case was postponed to 6 March. The court heard on Thursday that there
are post mortem and ballistic results that still need to be finalised. According to Liebenberg’s defence advocate, Marius van Wyngaardt, Poena’s family has also requested that the case be moved to High Court, and the court is still finalising whether to do so. Their decision will be announced at the next court appearance in March. There is speculation about whether the scene of the crime had been tampered with and if Liebenberg was receiving preferential
treatment, as there were allegedly more gun wounds than bullet shells on the scene. Reports also say that Liebenberg arrived at his first court appearance in a private vehicle. According to SAPA, Presiding magistrate Ian Cox said, "Liebenberg is receiving preferential treatment and I will not stand for it." This is also currently under investigation. Poena’s two brothers, Dimitri Shokkos and Jayson Shokkos, were present at the court case on Thursday and there were many
friends there to support them. “It is very difficult. We used to be a family of five and now we are down to three. Poena was only nineteen. We just want justice to prevail,” Dimitri told tame TIMES after the court was adjourned. Liebenberg’s mother was also present at his recent court appearance to support him. She kissed and hugged him before he took the stand. She said that she is relying on God’s grace to carry her through this time.

The issue of land and the sharing thereof has been a discussion point for much longer than many think. In recent days, the land talks have taken a jagged turn, but what many South Africans don’t realise is that in reality, although current talks are centred on race, there is a bigger issue and that issue threatens the budget and the progress of South Africa. A few months back I was really surprised at the extent of the seriousness surrounding the fact that South African land is at times owned by foreigners, while nationals go without. I had a conversation with a senior negotiator at Eskom and he was the one who sensitised me to this. When the country suffers power
(electricity) related strains, Eskom sometimes has to upgrade their distribution infrastructure, and this a process that most of the time involves negotiating with land-owners for lines to cross their properties. The problem that the state body would then encounter is the refusal of the foreign landowners, whom at times don’t even live in the country, to have these lines cross their properties. Now it does not take a rocket scientist to realise the setback this trend puts on the budget, because even the slightest bend in the spine of the power grid costs in the regions of millions. Not only that, but what happens to the potential growth of the country when we have a unpredictable delivery of power? This week I want to ask my fellow nationals, black and white, do you think there should be a review on policies of land ownership and what should then happen in instances like the one mentioned above? Let’s chat, e-mail me at voice@ tametimes.co.za or drop me a tweet @ nietovoice.
BERADINGSENTRUM / COUNSELLING CENTRE Depression (1) When leading a discussion on depression, the term ‘depression’ need to be clarified. We can distinguish between three different concepts of depression, namely symptom, syndrome and disorder. A symptom is normally related to the environment and are short lived. This describes the common sad or down feelings all of us occasionally experience in life, caused by minor events. A syndrome encompasses deeper feelings of sadness and are less common than
symptoms. This kind of depression also impacts a person’s life on various other levels, such as motivation and sleep, and is normally caused by more significant life events such as loss of a loved one through death or divorce. This kind of depression can be successfully overcome with therapy. Care should however be taken if the symptoms persist beyond a reasonable adjustment period following the loss of a loved one. Next week more on the disorder.

The past weekend was fairly interesting; seeing all the members of Boksburg getting registered and, of course, seeing the famous Johnny Clegg live at the never-disappointing Emperors Palace. Things to look out for in the next week’s edition is the Valentine’s Day event Malherbe, Rigg and Ranwell and tame TIMES are holding for Witfield Park Retirement Centre. Also, this weekend the Idols auditions are being held at Carnival City and EG Jansen is playing at Florida Prestige UJ Stadium.

Baby stolen from her mother’s arms
The police in Dunnottar are searching for a 3-month-old girl who was kidnapped. The baby was taken from her mother’s arms two weeks ago. It is alleged that the mother was walking along Porter Road in Dunnottar when a light blue Nissan Sentra suddenly stopped next to her. She alleges that two males jumped out of the vehicle, grabbed the child away from her and pushed her to the ground. The suspects then drove away. The suspects are two
males and a woman. The suspects were last seen driving towards the Kwa Thema area. The child was covered with a red and white blanket. The name of the baby is Minehle Nkosi. Anyone with information that can lead to the recovery of the kidnapped child is urged to contact the investigating officer W/O Eric Dumisa on 083 365 2467 or 011 365 5700. Information may be forwarded to Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or through an SMS to PRIMEDIA Crime Line at 32211.
Children and drugs
Drugs in our society are getting out of hand. To root out this problem we need everybody to help us curb this problem. Our children are targeted, with drug dealers making use of very young children. Children from the age of 10 are involved in drugs. This is a very serious problem in our precinct. We need the parents to take note of this. We are also encountering a problem regarding the rehabilitation of drug addicts. You must
understand one thing, if a person uses any illegal substance more than once they are addicted. Another excuse is that the person is only smoking dagga, not drugs. Dagga is an illegal substance. We have picked up youngsters, and then the parents cannot afford any rehabilitation centre. The aim is to help these youngsters to get help. But there are no rehabs that can accommodate these people who cannot afford the costs. Today children grow up by themselves. Either the parents are working, or they do not care. Parents must play an active role and participate in their child’s upbringing. It is not the teachers or other authorities’ place to teach your child morals and values. The following is very important to take note of: Family bonding, rewards, boundaries, enough rest, know their friends, communicate, address behaviour, early signs, signs of illegal substance, what is in your house? *Suppiled by Boksburg North Police.

du Plessis: ‘n treffer by ‘White Zulu’ Juanita Emperors Palace awes crowd Chantal Thurlby
chantal@tametimes.co.za
Overwhelmed and ecstatic; those are the only words that can describe seeing England-born Johnny Clegg and his band live. From the moment you sit down, anticipation from fellow audience members hypes you up. Wearing a pair of black tracksuit pants, a black t-shirt and with all his Zulu instruments surrounding his feet, Clegg has a natural way of making the crowd feel as happy and content as he looks. Familiar songs were heard along with an interesting tale of Clegg’s adventures and life-changing experiences continued between each song, as well as a joke or two to ensure a quality show. Clegg touched on his experience with Mandela and how he had changed his heart and was dear to him. He also made reference to how his journey with Zulu music and other aspects of Zulu culture led him to a junior lectureship in Social Anthropology at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwaterstrand. In order for Clegg to learn how to play traditional Zulu music, he first approached Sipho Mchunu, a migrant worker who was a street musician. Clegg learned Zulu and an athletic style of Zulu traditional dance called Indlamu during his time with Mchunu as well. Clegg is quoted in the past, during the struggle, that he wanted to be able to play to everybody, that is all. It is a simple thing, but in South Africa it was a political issue. Clegg expressed in his performance how glad he was to now be able to perform without the struggle, but his music is a reminder of it. Johnny Clegg has a stage presence like no other and should he be performing again in Johannesburg, tame TIMES recommends this as a show for your bucket list. Please visit our website: www.tametimes. co.za for more information and our Facebook page for videos of the concert.

Ballers Indoor Arena now open On 1 February the East Rand community gladly welcomed Ballers Indoor Arena to the neighbourhood. Opening with a bang as the proud owners, Lebohang Mokoena, Basil Hunter and Nicholas Farinha, kicked off their new business venture with a day filled with sport, action and entertainment as they held their very first tournament offering a grand prize of R10 000. For the sports enthusiasts the arena offers exquisite, upmarket professional sporting facilities, including two beautiful FIFA approved AstroTurf soccer fields and an indoor cricket and netball court. The parenting players do not have to worry about their children as there is a lovely, supervised kiddies play and entertainment area. The benchwarmers are treated to a stunning bar and Pizzeria Café area, which boasts big screen TVs, a pool table, foozeball table, PlayStations and an action-packed view that overlooks the soccer fields. The three business partners all have astounding soccer backgrounds and talent, which they are going to be sharing with the youth. Lebohang Mokoena currently plays for the PSL soccer team Mamelodi Sundowns, Basil Hunter played professional soccer in Greece for three years, and Nicholas Farinha was part of the Orlando Pirates reserve team. “This sporting arena offers the best of the
best facilities, in order for people to develop skills into talent, they need to be given the opportunity and we at Ballers Indoor Arena are giving them the chance,” adds Mokoena. In 2008 Hunter came up with the notion and dream of Ballers Indoor Arena and since then has always been adding on ideas, tweaking this and that, seeing what works and what does not and today, six years later, his dream is a reality. “Owning my own soccer indoor arena has literally consumed my every thought for the past few years, it was all I could think about. I didn’t want just an ordinary indoor soccer venue, I wanted to provide sportsmen with the best of the best facilities, a place to build skill, play hard sports and a place to enjoy a good, welcoming environment. I achieved my dream beyond expectation,” states Hunter. “If you are looking for a new hobby, sport or a place to relax, meet new people and just enjoy yourself, Ballers Indoor Arena is the place to be. We welcome everyone and anyone with arms wide open and we look forward to having you as a part of the B.I.A family,” concludes Farinha. Lions take a beating at Ellis Park Ilze Moore ilze@tametimes.co.za
The full strength Sharks team annihilated the tame Lions in their final warm up match on Friday night at Ellis Park, winning 5714. The Lions knew there was a slim chance of making a comeback against the fierce Sharks team, who had a huge lead (31-0) as the whistle blew at half time. In the first 90 seconds Springbok player Odwa Ndungane was the first over the try line, after
an initial break by fly-half Patrick Lambie. Lambie continued creating opportunities for his team through solid tackle kicking and dangerous attacking runs. tries from Francios Steyn and Stephan Lewies. Ackerman stated before the clash against the Sharks that it was imperative to avoid injuries and rested some of their key players, as the players were preparing for Super rugby.
