Well, Brandon Fourie, an E.G Jansen student, had an idea, one that the brave young matriculate came up with. This could possibly be one of the most daring ways to ask a girl to a matric dance.

Brandon and his parents sent 94.7 Highveld presenter Darren 'Whackhead' Simpson an e-mail asking for assistance in getting the girl.

According to Darren’s On-Air recording he noticed a spark in the e-mail and wanted to help Brandon get the girl. After some planning

when Brandon gave Wackhead the go ahead, Christine, joined the conversation unknowingly.

After a brave display of vocal talent Brandon asked Christine “Christine will you please go to the matric dance with me?”. She said “yes”.

When Darren exposed himself Christine giggled and agreed that it is a definitely a yes.

Christine added that Brandon made her year by doing this for her.

Captains of Industry a success at MRR The March breakfast meeting of Ekurhurleni Captains of Industry Forum (ECOIF) was hosted by Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell (MRR) on Thursday.

Jeff Matthee, a partner in MRR, welcomed the audience as the movers and shakers in Ekurhurleni and shared with them that MRR is a diverse and unique law firm situated on the East Rand of Johannesburg and was established in 1894. Goeiste, ek het nooit geweet dat blommerangskikking so tegnies kan raak nie! Die blommedemonstrateur het aan ons verduidelik dat daar horisontale- en vertikale lyne is waarvolgens die blomme gerangskik word.

Ek het vinnig opgemerk dat balans ook ‘n belangrike kwessie is as dit by blommerangskikking kom. Ek het nog altyd ‘n voorliefde vir kleurvolle en pragtige blomme gehad; rose en lelies veral. Ek het met aandag geluister en volledig nota’s gemaak. ‘n Rukkie later het elke dame die geleentheid gehad om ‘n rangsikking van hul eie te maak.Ek het dadelik weggeval en blare, blomme en stingels oral ingesteek waar daar ‘n gaatjie was. Ek het ook nooit besef hoe fyn die handwerk is nie; elke stingeltjie moet ordentlik omgekrul en vasgesteek word. “Elke aansig van die rangskikking moet netjies afgewerk wees dames,”roep die demonstrateur oor ons skouers. My ou krom vingers het vinnig begin klop van die rumatiek, maar ek vas vasbeslote om Gysie te beïndruk met ‘n pragtige tafelrangskikking vir ons eetkamertafel. Ek het eens op ‘n tyd die gesegde gehoor dat ‘n mens nader is aan die hemel in ‘n tuin vol blomme, en ek stem eenhonderd persent saam! Die heerlike reuk van die vars rose gemeng met die titseltjie suurlemoen van die suurlemoene wat ons ook in die rangskikking moes inkorporeer.

Die beoordeelaar het so suutjies oor elkeen se skouer geloer en saggies ‘n paar aantekeninge op ‘n klein notaboekie gemaak. Na die tyd het sy aan elke dame terugvoer gegee en alternatiewe idees voorgestel. Ek was nog nooit een wat kritiek met absolute gemak ontvang nie, maar ek sal aanvaar waar ek nie ‘n kenner is nie en ek leer ook graag. Ek is nou ‘n amptelike lid van die klub en ek sien ongelooflik baie uit na ons volgende byeenkoms.

Tip: Sorg dat jy op ‘n gereelde basis jou regterbrein laat werk, hetsy dit deur skilder, blommerangskiking of kraalwerk is.

Update: electricity problems in Boksburg Eskom declared an chantal@tametimes.co.za emergency this month and called on consumers to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances to prevent the need for rotational load shedding.

The power system was still ‘very tight’. The risk had increased significantly due to the heavy rains over the last weeks and an increase in technical problems that were experienced at some of Eskom’s power stations.

Eskom made the following statement at the time of the emergency: “should the demand decrease over this period, load shedding will not be implemented. Eskom will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all media platforms.”

Since then Impala Park in Boksburg has been sitting in the dark on and off due to

cable faults that had occurred on the two feeder-lines connected to the area’s substation. However, almost four weeks later, Impala Park is still sitting with the same problem.

Denise Curry, Impala Park CPF, said on Tuesday, 18 March, “Our power was off again today. It was off yesterday too.

Apparently, we were told, that our cables (under ground) have been affected and some ruined. These cables were laid in the 80’s and due to all the constant rain we have had these past few weeks, the rain water has reached these deep cables and that is why we are having problems. However, Eskom needs to give us some sort of notice.

Impala Park is an established area, there are old people living here that rely on breathing machines. If the electricity goes off then the only way we know anything is if we call Clr Andre Du Plessis and ask him, but 21:00 is not an appropriate time to be calling

someone for answers.”

The worse and most commonly affected areas seem to be Roman Street, Beach Craft Avenue and Witkoppie Ridge.

On 13 March SABC reported that Eskom knew about the ongoing problem of power to Impala Park and surrounding areas in Boksburg. This is what Eskom said, “We are now trying to locate the fault on the second feeder-line. Once it has been pinpointed, it will take between four to six hours to repair,” Director for Operations at the Metro’s Energy Department, Hannes Roos said. The area had been without power since 18:00 on the 13th.

“Power is slowly being brought back to some of the affected areas and in two hours, 60% of the area will have electricity,” municipal spokesperson Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu said. What about the other 40% of Impala Park who feel as though they have been abandoned and are still without electricity?

East Rand water treatment underway

Fifty-seven million litres of water, on a daily basis, is expected to be treated by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) that has been installed in the Germiston area. Water Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, has said that the plan is to treat water and discharge it into the Kliprivier. This is expected to be fully up and running by the end of April this year.

Although the Kliprivier is one of the critical feeders to the Vaalrivier officials have assured

the public that the treatments will not impact the Vaalrivier negatively at all.

The event, that was attended by MEC’s from several provinces and Susan Shabangu, Mineral Resource Minister, saw the announcement of the elaborate R319 million that is to be spent on the project.

Witwatersrand area is set to be the main focus area. Billions more is to be spent on these types of projects.

The funds are used for:

• Constructing and Installing acid mine drainage pumps • The treatment of the plants • Monitoring the shafts The full project involves the establishment of a new AMD pump station, a treated water and waste sludge pipeline and an AMD neutralisation facility which is a high density sludge AMD treatment station. This process hopes to ensure the acidic particles do not reach environmentally critical levels.

Born in Kwa-Zulu Natal in 1989, convicted of robbery, fraud and extortion in the Free State in 2008, this young fugitive escaped custody in 2009 and migrated to Gauteng.

Five years down the line, thinking that his criminal record has been expunged, the suspect decided to apply to be part of the Ekurhuleni Municipality Peace Corps. That proved to be his undoing and he is now facing the possibility of a long-term stay behind bars.

The runaway was taken into custody on the morning of Monday, 10 March when coming in for an interview with the hope of serving in the Ekurhuleni Municipality Peace Corps.

The 25-year-old suspect excelled in his physical assessment during the selection process but his cover was blown when his fingerprints were checked to ensure that he had no criminal record. That is when the EMPD realised that he was a fugitive.

Mandrax worth R 400 000 confiscated in Boksburg Information provided by a reliable source to the EMPD K9 Unit resulted in a shipment of approximately 2 000 Mandrax tablets worth about R400 000 being seized. A male suspect was apprehended. The arrest took place on Tuesday, 18 March in Jet Park, Boksburg.

When following up on information, members of EMPD K9 Unit located a courier vehicle with the illicit package and arrested the 46-year-old driver. The suspect claimed he was just a courier with instructions to transport the package from Boksburg and to deliver it in Namibia.

Charges of possession, dealing and distribution of narcotics were laid against the suspect at Boksburg North police station. Due to the gravity of the case, the docket has been escalated to National Intelligence for further investigations.

Update: Children witness mother’s murder The man accused of killing and robbing the owner of a shop, in front of her children earlier this month, has been denied bail at the Kempton Park Regional Court.

The man, Clement Kgothatso Ramawela,(25) will remain in police custody until his next appearance. The matter was postponed to 16 April and was moved from Regional court one to court two. The arrest occurred on 8 March.

He was believed to be a former employee at Annemarie van Zyl’s shop. The woman’s daughters were at the shop during the incident.

The man was charged with business robbery and murder.

Horrific accident Metal industry: what happened to leaves four dead our late husbands’ contribution?

Four people were declared dead on scene after the taxi in which they were travelling collided with a truck on Rondebult road near Windmill Park in Boksburg on Thursday evening.

Thirteen other passengers from the taxi were transported to different hospitals with critical and serious injuries respectively. One other patient was airlifted to a Johannesburg Hospital with a helicopter as a result of injuries sustained on the head.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services responded to the call and were tasked to use heavy duty hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to free the injured from the wreckage.

The cause of the accident is still undetermined. Metro police officers were on scene to conduct an investigation. Road was closed for traffic and motorists had to use alternative routes.

The vibe was gorgeous with not one frown in sight, talent flowed from every angle making it difficult to decide which stage to stand in front of, which artist to become the new favourite and which famous band member to take selfies with.

The line-up for day consisted of Shaun Jacobs, Matthew Mole, December Streets, ShortStraw, Gangs of Ballot, Jack Parow, The Plastics, Al Bairre, Frank Turner, KT Tunstall, The Kiffness, to name a few.

The crowds were screaming with delight when the likes of the December streets, Al Bairre and ShortStraw came onto stage. All and all the festival was true to its roots and tame TIMES cannot wait for next year’s one.

Forsaken, die nuutste film uit die Incense Productions stal het sommer vroeg al besluit dat hulle die reëls sal buig en hulle afsluiting op ‘n heel ander manier vier.

Hoe kan ‘n mens dan nou anders as jou hoofakteur die immergewilde Gerhard Steyn is? Natuurlik moet daar ‘n vertoning of twee vir die publiek gegee word.

Elke akteur het ‘n klein Oscar-beeldjie ontvang, ongeag van hoe groot of klein hulle rolle was. Produksielede het ook elkeen weggestap met ‘n klepel raad (clapper board) met die besonderhede van die produksie daarop. Die hoogtepunt was verseker die eksklusiewe beeldmateriaal uit die film. Morne Lane (vervaardiger) en Wille Olwage (Regisseur asook karakter waarop die film gebasseer is) het tot groot vermaak van die gaste, onmiddelik weggespring deur die ‘bloopers’ uit die film op die grootskerm te wys. Die wenner

uit die reeks was ongetwyfeld Gerhard Steyn wat tydens ‘n baie emosionele toneel nie sy lag kon hou as Hykie Berg die spanning breek deur hom te vra vir ‘n soen nie. Dan was daar ook die toneel waar Gerhard baie ontstoke sy baadjie moes gryp en uit ‘n hospitaalkamer storm, onwetend dat hy per ongeluk die voetstuk van die hospitaalbed ook saam met hom vat. Die ys is gebreek en die mense praat met groot lof en opgewondenheid oor die Forsaken film.

Forsaken gaan duisende mense se lewens aanraak met ‘n boodskap van geloof, hoop en liefde, deursettingsvermoë en vriendskap.

Die voorlopige uitreikingsdatum vir Forsaken word vir die laaste kwartaal van 2014 beplan.

Soul star Joss Stone at Carnival City Multi-platinum selling British soul singer Joss Stone will be performing for one night only at the Carnival City Big Top Arena on 2 April 2014.

With six albums and over 14-million in sales worldwide under her belt, Stone has made an impression on fans of soul music.

With her latest release The Soul Sessions Volume 2, Joss shows why she is so highly acclaimed in her genre. Her new album has been described as “vocal poise, passion and power with some great songs and an artist at the peak of her powers”.

Brakpan teaches Boksburg a rugby lesson The Community Cup kicked off on 8 March with eight matches at club venues spread across the length and breadth of the country, from Wellington in the south to Polokwane in the north, and Mossel Bay in the east to Rustenburg in the north-west.

The Community Cup , consists of 20 teams 5 in each pool , 40 matches in total for the pool stages.

In Pool C, title contenders Brakpan, the Valke champions, travelled from the East Rand to Former Springbok the West Coast to play Boland rugby player Avril Malan who played lock champions Roses United at Pelican Park in Wellington. The for the Springboks in 16 tests between 1960 Cell C Community Cup delivered another high quality game as and 1965.

Brakpan came up trumps, 48 - 23, against Boksburg in a much-anticipated East Rand derby.

The two highest-placed clubs in each of the four Pools will qualify for the Easter Championship play-offs, to be played once again at Outeniqua Park in George from 17-21 April 2014.

The Valke are from Boksburg Rugby Club, a historical club who are now 110 years old. Springbok rugby player and legend, Avril Malan, was one of the administrators who were actively involved with Boksburg Rugby Club for many years.

Over the years many players were chosen to represent various provincial teams.

The club also has Junior ages from 6 to under 18 and womans’ rugby as well.

When Boksburg Rugby Club was known as ERPM Rugby

Club, it played in the old Transvaal league and many players were chosen to represent the old Transvaal Provincial Team. After the demise of ERPM Mine, the name of the club changed to Boksburg Rugby Club. The club continued to use Prince George Park Stadium as its home ground. The club presently falls under the auspices of the Falcons Rugby Union.

In other rugby news the BokSmart “Safe Six” injury prevention exercises launched. The BokSmart “Safe Six” will be circulated to all rugby stakeholders, including Primary Schools, High Schools, and Clubs in South Africa, for immediate implementation countrywide for all age-groups U13 and above.

Marx roaring ahead for Lions

Marx stands out for his exceptional ball carrying skills, his ability to make decisions quickly and being able to lead from the front row.

The exceptional teenager who had to get special permission from SARU to play at a senior level, Malcolm Marx, ran onto the field for his third game for the Lions in the Vodacom Cup on 22 March at Loftus Versfeld.

“It’s a big honour for me to be representing my province at senior level and I feel very humbled by the experience. It’s an opportunity for me to do something big,” says Marx.

Born in Germiston, the promising hooker is a through and through Johannesburger who has played at every junior level for the Lions from U13 Craven Week to Grant Khomo, Academy Week, U18 Craven Week, and finally in last year’s Absa Under-19 provincial competition where he was named the Golden Lions’ U19 Forward of the Year. Humbly, Marx says: “It felt good to receive the nomination but I couldn’t have done it without my team and all their hard work.”

Playing in the Vodacom Cup this season is his first taste of senior rugby and he was granted permission from SARU to play at such a young age in line with the regulations of SARU’s BokSmart rugby safety programme.

“The Vodacom Cup is a good competition.

It has some of the best guys in South Africa

playing and there is lots of young talent,” he says. The mandate of the tournament is to unearth the future stars of South African rugby and it forms a crucial bridge between the junior levels and Super Rugby, and finally achieving the much sought after green and gold.

Marx stands at a solid 1.88m tall and weighs in at 113kg much like his hero, Bismarck du Plessis who is 1.89m tall and weighs in at 112kg. “Bismarck is my ultimate hero. I admire the way he plays and what he does on the field. It’s easy to see why he is number one in the world. I want to be exactly like him,” he says. Marx already stands out for his exceptional ball carrying skills, his ability to make decisions quickly and being able to lead from the front row.

The Golden Lions have had two close wins so far in the tournament – they won their first match against the Leopards XV in Potchefstroom 18-16 and beat the Valke by one point 23-22 at Ellis Park last weekend.

This upcoming game on Saturday against the Blue Bulls is sure to be a cracker and fans are encouraged to get down to the stadium and watch incredible talent like Marx in action as the formidable Golden Lions continue to show their mettle during the Vodacom Cup.

The Lions proved that they must not be underestimated when they beat the Reds at Ellis Park on Saturday 22 March. The Reds were comfortably leading 20-6 at half time, but the Lions fought back fiercely in the second half and won the game with a tight score of 23-20.

Reds player Quade Cooper was a force to be reckoned with and scored all the Reds’ points within the first 40 minutes of the game. He scored two tries, made two conversions and kicked two penalties for the Reds. The Lions, however, scored most

of their initial points through penalties and scored their tries only in the 63rd and 77th minutes of the game.

The Lions’ first opportunity to score a try arose when they won a penalty and kicked for touch. Their decision raised some concern among the spectators as this was the fourth time that they could have gone for the posts. However, the Lions won the line out and set the maul up, which disintegrated to their advantage. Lionel Mapoe got the ball shortly after and scored the first try.

Courtnall Skosan scored the second try after the Lions won a line out in the 77th minute.

Marnitz Boshoff converted both tries.

Referee Stuart Berry caused uproar when he awarded two yellow cards to Reds players Albert Anae and Jake Schatz in the second half, among other penalties.

This caused controversy as it seemed as though the referee was one-sided. SAPA quoted Reds coach Richard Graham saying: “The penalty count was 19-4 against us, I dont think I’ve ever been involved in a game where the penalty count has been like that. Certainly we will be speaking to Lyndon Bray, the referee’s boss, to get clarification.”

I have watched the first week of the World T20; and wondered whether the top cricketer’s from the eighties and nineties would have adapted and

I am convinced that the players from yesteryear would certainly have challenged the players from today. Going back twenty to thirty years, we were quite happy with cricket then and would have quite simply accepted the run rates on offer.

As I mentioned in a previous article regarding One Day Cricket in the eighties, 30 runs off the first ten overs in a 50 over game was acceptable and a great start to say the least. The modern version of T20 Cricket has given a different thinking and approach towards the current 50 over game, including Test Cricket.

Batsmen are continually improving on their strike rates; and who knows what will be a respectable start to a T20 game in the opening power play of the first six overs in the future, let alone Test and ODI Cricket. On average the last three or four over’s in a T20 game arguably now goes for 50 plus, but in time going forward, we could see twelve to fifteen an over in the first power play.

Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Lance Klusener, Brian Lara, Mark Greatbatch; and Jonty Rhodes to name but a few, are my selection of players who would have matched this and won many games for their country. In an ideal world, it would be great to make comparisons but, alas it is not the case. Last week I mentioned how important it was to make sure that our top batsmen in the current World T20 faced as many over’s as possible; and again it proved costly in the Proteas loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday. We are now chasing the eight ball and I firmly believe that AB De Villiers and David Miller should open the Proteas batting. Food for thought.
