The political scene is always interesting during the election year. Political parties pull out all stops to win votes with door to door campaigns, making promises, the key issues being improving service delivery and job creation. The report of the public prosecutor has added a new twist to this election year but nothing new for the Zuma administration. If we care to remember in the last election year President Jacob Zuma was facing

rape charges. This time he has been accused of unduly benefiting from the Nkandla security upgrade, a finding that has seen opposition parties moving to have the President impeached, and the public is eagerly waiting to hear the president’s response to the public prosecutors report. One is starting to wonder if President Jacob Zuma is bigger than the ANC. Add to the mix the EFF, who is making unfounded promises to win votes. The new kid on the block which has pinned all its hopes on the popularity of its leader Julius Malema, who also has a sword hanging over his head, are making promises that they can’t possible live up too. With the calls for nationalisation of mines and the reserve bank, one can not help but wonder, if exposed to that amount of wealth, what would stop this leader from pocketing

some of it. A leader who once demolished a R 3 million house in Sandton of all places to build a new one worth twice this amount if not more, I can’t but wonder how he has become an instant socialist, and someone we can trust with the countries wealth? The less said about the DA and the Maphele Ramphele debacle the better. There is no doubt that the ANC will win the elections, all that remains to be seen is how they will handle the Nkandla report. The next few weeks will be interesting as we draw nearer to the election date.

Mayor presents a progressive Ekurhuleni Ndu Ngwenya

ndu@tametimes.co.za The much awaited State of the City Address was delivered by Ekurhuleni’s Executive Mayor; Councillor Mondli Gungubele on 26 March in Germiston. As expected the Mayor’s address centred on the region’s progress over the past twenty years of a democratic South Africa and more importantly over the fourteen years since the formation of the Metro. Gungubele’s speech took listeners through the experiences of fictional characters; Joe Citizen and Tshidi Citizen, frequently pausing to highlight progress and expose future plans for Ekurhuleni and its residents. The theme of the Address; Strengthening Social Maturity by Advancing Social Cohesion in Pursuit of a Prosperous, and therefore Livable City, remained unchanged from the 2013 State of the City Address. In celebration of the achieved social cohesion after three centuries of institutionalized racism, Clr Gungubele began by quoting South Africa’s late former President; Nelson Mandela, who said “no one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.” Some of the regions statistics in the Mayor’s speech were figures revealing the region as home to a quarter of the 12 million population of Gauteng, an estimated Gross Geographic Product of R204 billion which translates to 6.4% of the national GDP, and public and private investments approximated at R75 billion since 1994. “These statistics continue to reaffirm our resolve that the economic policy pursuits of the democratic government have and are producing the desired results and impact. However, this is not to say that we are content

with the current economic performance, especially in relation to employment creation given the prevailing high levels of poverty,” said Clr Gungubele. The Aeriortopolis development program, which has been the subject of many residents questions, also received a substantial amount of mention throughout the speech with the Mayor referring to its potential to redress the unacceptably high 38% unemployment rate which plagues the region. Development around the region through development programs like the Aeriortopolis according to the delivered speech will serve to equip the youth with skills and job opportunities. In the area of service delivery, Clr Gungubele spoke of an exess of R1.1 billion spent since 2005 for the renewal of electricity infrastructure, 90 000 houses constructed between 1994 and June 2013, over R120 million for replacement of fire engines, R7 million spent on the upgrading of the call centre while also in the process of recruiting 258 new agents to man the call centre, nine clinics which now operate around the clock

and many more services which testified to the progress of the City. In the area of industrialization of the City, Clr Gungubele made mention of PRASA’s decision to invest in the region by locating the PRASA-GIBELA train manufacturing plant in Dunotar, Springs. The investment by PRASA carries a R51 billion price-tag and is expected to be fully functional within three years of the sod turning ceremony is planned to take place in April 2014. MORE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SPEECH INCLUDE: - 1100 participants of the Ekurhuleni Jobs Programme which took place in September 2012 have been successfully placed in jobs within the Metro and private companies. - The plans to relocate the Vaal University of Technology’s Chloorkop operations to the former Vista University Campus in Daveton. - The City’s water quality meeting SANS 241 standards and therefore maintaining the Platinum Blue Drop status. - Completed construction of sports facilities

Clr Gungubele during the delivery of the State of the City Address. (stadiums) in Duduza, KwaThema, Wattville and Tsakane. - Successful hosting of the SA Golf Championship in 2011, 2013 and 2013 at the Glendower Golf Club which has been hailed (by SA Golf Association) as the best golf course in Gauteng. - Scheduled construction of BRT related infrastructure expected to commence in June 2014 At the end of his address Clr Gungubele and other members or the august Council visited members of the public who were seated at a public viewing facility just outside the council house. The mayor also participated in an inspection parade of EMPD officers before returning to the house for the mandatory debate around the State of the City Address.

No justice for assaulted twin girls

There has been a very disturbing picture making the rounds on Facebook recently, accusing a senior officer of assaulting a child. The incident is said to have taken place in December last year. Sarah*, as well as several other children, live on the premises by the correctional services and according to her mother the officer has still not been arrested. Sarah was allegedly assaulted with the officer’s service belt. “All they did was walk home and play with garden mushrooms, same as what every child does in his or her life. I cannot get access to the premises, that may be a good thing, and the commanding officer is not willing to see me. They are trying to keep it still and hoping it will disappear. I have never felt so hopeless in my life before as I cannot even protect my own daughter,” said Sarah’s mother in the Facebook post along with the picture that she posted. The post went on to say: I am begging all not only to like this but to share it on your Facebook page. One million shares will not be enough until this person sits in jail. This is not assault against another grown up, it is child abuse. Please help and share until the right person reads this and ensure something happens. The Classic India sizzles to new heights

Restaurant trouper and Sanlam Best Businessman Finalist, Mr. Manish Gupta is taking the restaurant business to new heights with the launch of the first ever barbeque and sizzler restaurant in South Africa. Driven by his passion for food, Mr. Manish Gupta introduced the popular ‘The Classic India’ franchise to Johannesburg over four years ago. Inspired by the need to be the best multi-cuisine brand, Mr. Manish Gupta embarked on this new era in the restaurant industry which will be chronicled as a significant milestone in the eating out experience. Based at the newly renovated premises in Boksburg, the barbeque concept is ideally compared to a ‘braai in a box’ with an authentic

Indian and Far East touch. In alignment with The Classic India’s ethos of providing patrons variety in their meal preferences, the barbeque concept offers a variety of barbecue skewers complemented with an assortment of breads. Patrons are provided with their preferred selection and for the first time in the history of eating out, guests will be able to braai their meal at their leisure while enjoying the perks of a restaurant. Motivated by the trend in culture fusion, The Classic India has extended their menu to offer multi-cuisine with a difference by incorporating an age-old Far East serving style, a sizzler serving. The new sizzler restaurant will be remaining true to its name by serving dishes in a rosewood platter based on a cast iron plate, ensuring your meal is still sizzling as

you devour the last grain. Prompted by the increase in function requests, The Classic India now boasts a fullyequipped banquet and conference facility. With a seating capacity of 200, the banquet venue is completed with modern, elegant finishes, including imported Swarovski crystal chandeliers, hi-tech sound, lighting and audiovisual equipment. The conference facility has a holding capacity of 80 complemented with state-of-the-art equipment comprising a 3.2” roll-up screen, compatibility to various electronic gadgets amongst others. Attributing his success to his passion for food, Mr. Manish Gupta not only manages the quality control process of each meal served at The Classic India, but also places a key focus on utilising the finest ingredients to ensure

No additional charges

The Ekurhuleni metro says there will be no extra charge to residents for the new 240-lt wheelie bins. According to reports, residents thought that the R132 monthly refuse removal charge would increase and that they would be billed a further R109 refuse charge per month once they get their new refuse bins. Acting metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says that this is a misunderstanding, as previously residents were paying for refuse removal services based on their stand size, and after the introduction of the bins the service has been charged on the bin collection which reduces the cost to R109. Five Nominations for East Rand Stereo East Rand Stereo is no stranger to the MTN awards; in 2010 the radio station won their first award which was in the “Adjudicators Special Commendation” category. In 2011 East Rand Stereo bettered the previous year’s performance by winning yet another award in the category “Best Promotion/Stunt/ Event:Non-commercial.” Two more awards were secured in 2012. “We are extremely excited about these nominations & wish to add a few more MTN awards to our existing accolades,” said Angeline Marokoane - News & PR, East Rand Stereo. The announcement of the finalists was made on YouTube by CEO of the MTN Radio Awards, Lance Rothschild. “The overall quality of the entries was excellent and competition at the top of the categories was extremely close. One thing that has been noticed and even commented on by the various adjudicators is the standard of radio in South Africa, which is excellent and most certainly on a par with some of the best radio elsewhere in the world. I certainly believe that the MTN Radio Awards has contributed to an increased focus on excellence and has raised the overall standard of the industry,” said Rothchild The awards evening promises to be the highlight of the radio industry and will be hosted on 12 April at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Last Saturday Jimmy Carr brought his brand of edgy and quick witted comedy to The Big Top Arena at Carnival City. Carr wasted no time in setting up the mood of the show, with targets like Jacob Zuma, Oscar Pistorius and the venue itself being shown no mercy, while reminding the audience that if they had trouble with those jokes, things were only going to get worse for them later on in the evening. Jimmy Carr live is quite different from the Jimmy Carr you may have seen on television. He is edgier and cruder, and most of his jokes are unprintable, but still, he is immensely funny, sharp, and has a repertoire of come backs and one liners that would make most professional stand ups green with envy. Carr’s show is a throwback to old school one liner comedy with modern twists, including a narrated slide show and a section in which he dares the audience to heckle him. The few who were brave enough to step up to the challenge were dealt cutting come-backs that had the entire audience in stitches. Carr has sold millions of DVDs and albums worldwide, and has been called “the hardest working man in comedy”, a title he referred to on Saturday night as being “ridiculous”, and comparable to being called “the tallest dwarf”. Jimmy Carr’s comedy routine has some of the funniest material around today, and is a definite must for anyone who is a fan of razor sharp comedy with a bit of an edge. If you missed his live show, you can catch Carr as the Roastmaster of the Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene, at the Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City. The show will premiere on TV on Comedy Central on Monday 28 April at 21:00.

Blacks Only at Emperors Palace

The Fray - Touring South Africa for the first time

Comedian Isaac Gampu kept a packed Centre Court audience in stitches during the Blacks Only Comedy Show at Emperors Palace on Saturday evening, 29 March. Gampu and other top comedians like David Kau, Donovan Goliath, Loyiso Madinga and Thapelo “Tips” Seemise poked fun at everything from Nkandla to the fake sign language interpreter at former President Nelson Mandela’s memorial service during the course of the show, much to the delight of the 3000-stromg crowd. Not a dry eye at Ster- Kinekor EastGate * Article by Fezeka Dlembula Walking into ster-kinekor eastgate is almost like walking into a virtual world. With everything made super easy whether you prefer booking your ticket at the selfhelp desk or you just like good old human interaction, their friendly staff are always available to help with your ticket booking or getting a snack at their kiosk. From action to Romance and everything in between there’s movies for everyone. I opted for the film starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, the Action Comedy “Ride Along”. You can always count on Kevin Hart to bring humour into any awkward situation, not to give too much away but the film is set in Atlanta where a fast talking high school security guard, Ben

(Kevin Hart), goes on a 24 hour ride along with his tough and overprotective soon-tobe brother in law, James (Ice Cube), all to prove he’s worthy to marry James’ little sister. While trying obviously too hard to impress James, Ben’s day quickly turns into comedy gold with unexpected twists and turns, high speed car chases, accidental shootings, impersonations, tight shirts and buildings blowing up. The awkward pair must get through the day without getting killed or killing each other. Directed by Tim Story, my friends and I rate the movie three out of five so grab a friend, partner, sibling or parent and head out to Ster-Kinekor Eastgate for a good laugh.

Soldier boy soldiers on

UNDEFEATED: Soldier boy at last weekend’s bout. The EFC Africa middleweight champion Garreth McLellan who is also known as Soldierboy, hardly batted an eye at his challenger JP Kruger aka Tinkerbell, in their main event title bout. EFC 28 returned to the Coca-Cola Dome on 27 March for the ever-eventful EFC challenge. The champion’s successful title defence also means that Kruger’s then perfect fight record (5-0) has ended. McLellan survived a number of strikes from Kruger at the onset whilst he strategically forced Kruger to the floor, before he took victory. McLellan managed to do this in 3.05 minutes into round one. Other wins: Christophe “Bomaye” Walravens beat Bernardo Mikixi through a verbal submission, with the DRC heavyweight paying tribute to

Ruan “Fangzz” Potts in his post-match interview. “To Ruan Potts, good luck with your first fight at EFC, you’re the best, and you’re the greatest,” said Walravens. Potts will make his debut at the US-based fighting championship early next month. Brendon Groenewald beat Vandam Mbuyi through tap-out due to strikes in their rematch. After managing to take the big DRC national’s back, Groenewald delivered damaging blows which forced Mbuyi to tapout. Mbuyi suffered a scare following an illegal knee to Groenewald’s head. A similar incident had gotten him disqualified in the past. Cape Town-born, Muay Thai “world” and Chinese MMA champion Irshaad Sayed took on Leo Gloss. Following a reset from an unexpected but necessary pause in the bout, Sayed made a move to secure the win 4.01 into the first round. Norman “Chef” Wessels returned to the hexagon after an absence of nearly two years against Cape Town’s Chris “Danger” du Pont. Du Pont engaged early before Wessels pushed him up against the fence and landed a strong elbow to the face, before taking him down and submitting him by rear-naked choke; earning him a title fight against reigning light heavyweight champion, Gideon Drotschie. The final prelim bout was with Jason Culverwell and Wade Henderson delivered both the fight and knockout of the night awards. The submission of the night award went to Soldierboy for his rear-naked choke victory, while Hanru Botha, Christophe Walravens and Bernardo Mikixi all took home performance bonuses. The next round of EFC which is presented by www.BetXchange. com will be returning to Carnival City on 1 May. Be sure not to miss it.

Ngwenya Champions league continues to elude PSL sides Ndu ndu@tametimes.co.za Champions league continues to elude PSL sides. South Africa is hailed on the African continent as the country with the most professional and most watched domestic soccer league, however Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams are yet to carry this recognition into continental competition. With the exception of Orlando Pirates, no other PSL side has won the coveted Champions League. Kaizer Chiefs was the latest local side to vie for continental glory after having won the local league in the previous season (2012 - 2013). Amakhosi, as Chiefs are fondly known by their supporters, started their Champions League campaign on a high note, maintaining the same amount of dominance in the initial stages of the Champions League. Chiefs beat their first opponents; Black Africa (Namibia) 4-1 on aggregate. Chiefs then made light work of Liga Muculmana of Mozambique, beating them 7-0 on aggregate.

Goals by Knowledge Musona and Morgan Gould were little too late to make up for the first leg (3-0) loss to AS Vita or to secure Kaizer Chiefs’ progress in the CAF Champions League. Photo from: Kickoff.com Kaizer Chiefs then lost momentum in their first leg tie against the DRC’s AS Vita, losing 3-0 away from home. Chiefs seemed to have found their form in the return fixture

OFF THE PITCH On the surface, the recent news from England does not bode well for their national game. I refer to the “Trott” incident, where the press led everyone to believe he left the Australian tour for reasons akin to a “stressBy Craig Norris related” illness. The player himself in an interview refuted these reasons and said he was in fact suffering from “burn-out”. This is surely not just an issue for England’s cricketers then, as this will become a world cricket problem; and this is why I believe they have only scratched the surface of the problem. I praise Trott for his honesty and explaining why he walked away from one of the most respected series in world cricket. One can only sympathise with the ECB because they have dealt with issues of stress in national players before, notably Marcus Trescothick and Steven Harmison, so it was easy for them to resort to that as a reason. Are we as South African cricket supporters thinking that this issue brought, which I believe the premature retirements, of Kallis and Smith as well? Perhaps our national players time it right, but we will never know. The fact of the matter is that Professional Burn-Out is a very real and very common problem among top sportsman who are in the public eye on a daily basis. The modern professional sportsman spend an enormous amount of time away from home, either travelling or training and YES, it does eventually take a toll on their life and it also affects people in corporate industries, so why not a sportsman. Often we lose sight of the fact that these sporting heroes are in fact just human beings exactly like you and I, with perhaps a little more talent or desire in their chosen pursuit. They feel emotions, they get tired, fatigued, listless and lethargic at their work place, but the difference is, we have a way of getting over our problems, we take a day or two off to recover. Maybe the boss takes a little work load away from us. This is not the case with these cricketers who are expected to perform at the same highly demanding level every single day and in every single competition; and that on its own, is exhausting and mentally draining. The sports seasons of professionals are too demanding and too long and I fear that this “burn-out” phenomenon may become more prevalent among other top sportsman. The corporate sponsors treat them like commodities to be traded and utilized at their whim; and the human element is very often absent. I agree that the potential of earning big money in the game today is huge, but at what cost to the individual. Whether the actions of Jonathan Trott are considered betraying team trust, or whether the press and players wish to criticize him, the fact remains that his honesty about the issue and his decision to leave the tour, may have done more good for the future of the game and its management of people than harm.
