Voting for a better future By Amy-Mae Campbell
Hon. Kenneth Meshoe casts his ballot.
On Wednesday 7 May South Africans had the opportunity to partake in the fifth democratic elections in South Africa. Hundreds of voters eagerly queued outside local voting stations to draw a firm cross; ensuring that their voices were heard. Many political party presidents were also seen casting their votes to support their parties. African Christian Democratic Party(ACDP) President, Kenneth Meshoe, who is a Boksburg local, cast his vote at Parkdene Primary School in Boksburg. The ACDP got 104, 039 national valid votes (0.57%) and 27, 196 provincial votes for Gauteng (0.62%). The ACDP are ranked as the ninth most popular party, based on the national 2014 election results, with a total of three seats in Parliament. The ANC once again won this year's elections, with 62.15% national votes and 53.59% of votes in Gauteng. The DA came second in this year's elections nationally and provincially, with 30.78% of votes in Gauteng and 22.23% nationionally. Meshoe shared his thoughts on this year's elections: "I have mixed feelings. On the one side I disappointed that ACDP did not improve on the last results, but I am glad that we managed to keep our three seats in parliament. I was shocked that the ANC won, because I did not expect them to get such a large amount of votes with all the scandal objections. This time it will not be that easy for the ANC; the parties will stand together for Zuma's impeachment," Meshoe said.

Truck accident kills new-born
On Monday 5 May a truck hit a woman and her baby while they were crossing Main Reef Road in Witfield. The woman was walking across the road from the informal settlement, which borders Mainreef Road, and the truck was unable to break in time. The woman, whose identity is unknown by police, was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital, where she has been treated for broken bones and internal injuries. Her baby was only one month old and did not survive the accident. According to ward councillor Hilary Coke, who is responsible for Main Reef Road and the areas surrounding this street, speeding is a very big problem in this area. Since 2011, approximately eight cases have been reported of children and pedestrians, who were knocked over by speeding vehicles on Main Reef and Wit Deep Roads, Coke said. “People should start adhering to speed limits. It’s not a race track. To see the way some drivers drive there is ridiculous,” said Coke.
There are currently ripple strips on the roads, environment for our children to play,” appealed which is supposed to prevent vehicles from a ward 33 resident at the meeting. Boksburg EMPD said that they will compile a speeding, but it has not been very effective. The area surrounding Main Reef Road is report this week to explain the issue in detail. very industrial and there are therefore many trucks using this road daily. Coke explained that it would be difficult to put speed humps in this road, due to the trucks that need to use it. “We need an EMPD person on duty to let the people cross,” said Coke. At a recent public meeting held by Ekurhuleni at the Boksburg City Hall, residents from ward 33, where Main Reef Road is, raised their concerns about the issue. Due to the fact that an informal settlement borders the road, many children who play outside fall victim to road NIGHTMARE ROAD: Main Reef Road, where a few fatal accidents. “We need a safe accidents have occured.
Ekurhuleni Metro budget for Boksburg On Wednesday 23 April the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality held a second public meeting for Boksburg residents to raise their concerns regarding community service delivery. They also presented their current and future financial budgets. The meeting formed part of the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for Boksburg. The IDP is a fiveyear plan through which the Ekurhuleni municipality aims improve each community through public participation. With the gained insight from each community, the municipality will plan, budget, allocate resources and make decisions based on the requirements put forward by the community. The Member of the Mayoral Committee, Palisa Nkunjana, has assured that every concern raised at the meeting will be taken into account while drawing up the Integrated Development Plan for Boksburg. The current 2013/2014 financial year capital budget for Boksburg is R50, 694, 293. The budget for each department in Boksburg is as follows: • Energy: R5,000,000 • Environmental Resources Management: R1,028,000

The Ekurhuleni municipality has increased their capital budget for Boksburg disaster and emergency management services from R800 000 for 2014/2015 financial year, to R2, 400, 000 for the 2015/2016 financial year.
Deel graag julle gedagtes hieroor met my mee. This year we celebrate 20 years of democracy. What a privilege to be able to have a say in the way in which our country is governed. What was especially inspiring to me was how people from all walks of life were all united on this one day for one common cause- to vote for a better future. I was also surprised to learn that many citizens out there did not cast their votes. If you did not vote this year, why not? I am very curious to hear your thoughts. Groete/ Kind regards, Amy-Mae amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za 083 594 8384
The Ekurhuleni Municipality also shared the needs which they have identified during the November 2013 Integrated Development Plan process. They are budgeting for these needs within the 2014/2015 financial year as well. A few of the needs that were identified in Boksburg CCA wards included:
Member of the Mayoral Committee: Palisa Nkunjana addressing the residents.

was our now 20 year old democracy. The election was however not the end of business, it was the beginning. Leading up to the election, many South Africans became sensitive to the issues around politics and the offerings of the various political parties and to me it makes absolute sense because of the efforts of the media to expose all the happenings and offerings to the people. The political sensitivity achieved over the past four months is something which I feel has to be grown on in the as the next government assumes the responsibility of leading the masses. It would be totally undermining the progress if we regressed

into the same attitude; which at times could be interpreted as not caring. Before the beginnings of the electioneering processes, the average citizen was aware of the problems in communities but could never make the link between the government, its responsibility to the voters and their responsibilities to the government. What we are faced with today and moving on, is the beginnings of the future; a future which we will need to work towards. What we are basically faced with is a country on reset; the vote has not taken away the issues citizens were facing, it has allowed the citizen the opportunity to delegate their voices to the parties as they best represent their needs.
The workings of democracy have proven not to be a function which can also be delegated wholly to the leaders. Citizens need to avail themselves to work and fulfilling of their responsibilities to the country. As we sit at home we have a responsibility, whether from a private business point right down to the youth who have the choice to be in class actually learning. We have come a long way, and we still have some strides to make, but if the involvement of the citizen during the voting, then we can wake up and hold our heads up high. The distance we have to cover, in no way affects the possibility. South Africa is still alive with possibilities.

Mercy Haven needs your help
Mother’s Day was celebrated on Sunday and tame TIMES hopes that all mothers got shown just how much of an impact they make in their children’s lives and were treated to showers of love and appreciation. tame TIMES spoke to mothers and asked them what Mother’s Day means to them.
Rose Taggart points to one of the unstable patches in the floor of the second story of the house. The Mercy Haven’s Ubuntu House has made it their mission to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Many broken women have passed through their doors, and, with Mercy Haven’s holistic support, are today leading healthy and happy lives. However, Mercy Haven had to close their doors temporarily this year, due to the fact that sections of the house are falling apart. In order to prevent accidents, every house has a legally compliant checklist. This checklist includes smoke detectors, light-bulb covers, neat electrical wiring, solid walls and floors, among others. The legally compliant checklist ensures that a home is safe. An NGO offering shelter, such as Mercy Haven, must have a certificate of compliance, which proves that the home is legally compliant and safe.
Rose Taggart and two volunteers at Mercy Haven
The house in which Mercy Haven operates today consists of two buildings that were built over 100 years ago. The building is therefore not entirely stable and in dire need of renovations and electrical upgrades. “There is a serious risk of electrical fire due to the myriad of connections, additions, and detractions from the original installations,” warned Francis Zurcher, who conducted a risk assessment of the house. The wooden floors have started to fall through in patches, leaving large holes in the floor. Rose Taggart, Manager of Mercy Haven’s Ubuntu House, currently has a list of over 20 women and children for whom she had to find accommodation, as her home cannot offer shelter while it is not legally compliant. Rose is busy organising a building project to fix up the house, and she aims to re-open Mercy
Haven on 1 July 2014. “Our first concern is the comfort and well-being of traumatised clients and children who come to us. It is therefore of utmost importance that our buildings are safe, user-friendly and hygienic,” said Rose. “Having come through abuse and heartache, I have empathy with these women. If the property is more serviceable, it will be ideal, as we are ideally situated to help. We are in a location with courts, a police station and a clinic, all just around the corner,” Rose explained. If there is anyone who is interested in helping Rose with funds for the project, contact her on 011 892 2714 or at rose@ execmail.co.za. There are many women and children in the Boksburg community who will benefit greatly from this home.

EMPD Choir showing growth Spreading the love in treats The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) choir was established in 2007 with only ten members – founded by the now retired Chief Superintendent; Lehihi. Through the years EMPD Choir has developed into a formidable group that is now counted among choirs of long-standing such as JMPD and Soweto Choral Choir. The choir has grown to fifty members. The purpose of the choir is to play a role during Community Safety memorial and funeral services; to close the gap between the law enforcement fraternity and the communities they serve; to educate the community about the police environment; to
engage in community activities and programs; to promote the Batho Pele Principles and to ensure the well-being of employees through music. Orphanages and homes such as Tembisa Orphanage, Mohau Orphanage & Disabled Persons in Vosloorus and Tholakele Orphanage Home in Kwa-Thema are some of the homes that have benefitted greatly from the choirs efforts in raising funds by organizing concerts and soliciting assistance from businesses and churches. Items donated included electrical appliances, blankets, clothing and groceries among others. Choral festivals are held annually with the aim of reducing the plight of these homes.

According to the Centre Manager, Angie Reiners, the victims who pass through their doors have been through very traumatic experiences, such as rape, substance abuse and violence, and they are always in need of support. Angie would like to thank the community for their wonderful support and she hopes that the Centre’s relationship with the community will grow from strength to strength: “We have been in partnership with Rotary and MRR for many years now; this is not the first distribution they did. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for their involvement in the community,” Angie said.

Faced with invariably challenging situations when people involved in protests are not acting within the law or not observing the conditions as set out in their application in terms of the Gatherings Act, SAPS has embarked on a project of ensuring that all law enforcement officers are skilled and capacitated in terms of effective crowd management. A situation of only Public Order Policing members being the ones only trained in crowd management is the thing of the past – henceforth, all SAPS and Metro Police officers will undergo crowd management training. The SAPS Academy in Pretoria commenced with this intensive three week program in early March. The first group completed the rigorous training on 28 March 2014 and a second group on 17 April. 200 EMPD officers are now well-equipped with the know-how of protecting those protesting peacefully and tackling those who are out to cause mayhem during protests, were part of around 1,000 SAPS

With winter just around the corner, many of us already have our heaters and warm electric blankets ready. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? Here are a few simple safety tips and precautions for you to stay warm and safe this winter: Paraffin safety tips and precautions • Always use your childproof paraffin safety cap on your paraffin bottle and keep paraffin and matches away from children. • If a child accidentally swallows paraffin, don’t give him anything to eat or drink. Never make a child vomit as this forces paraffin into the lungs and causes pneumonia. Take the child to a clinic or hospital quickly. • When you pour paraffin into a lamp or stove, use a funnel not a cup. If you use a cup, the child might think it contains water and drink from it. • If you spill paraffin on yourself, wash it off and change your clothes, so that it doesn’t burn your skin. General safety tips • Always turn your stove and lamp off when you leave home. • Never pour water on fire caused by oil. Always keep a bucket of sand or a fire extinguisher at home. • If your clothing catches fire, fall to the ground and roll to put out the flames. If someone else is on fire roll him or her in a blanket. • When cooking with paraffin leave a window open to let out the fumes. • Always keep paraffin stoves and lamps on a flat surface so they won’t fall and start a fire.
• Never leave young children at home alone Fire Safety Tips Using Portable Electric Heaters • It is estimated that half the deaths and one third of the injuries resulting from electric heater fires occurred at night when family members were asleep and the heater was unattended. • Another concern with electric heaters is the use of power or extension cords which can be too small to supply the amount of current required by the typical portable heater. Fire safety status check To be safe, you should be able to answer “yes” to the following statements: • The heater is operated at least one meter away from upholstered furniture, curtains, bedding and other combustible materials. • The heater is used on the floor. • The heater is turned off when family members leave the house or are sleeping. • Operate heater away from combustible materials. Do not place heaters where towels or other materials could fall on the appliance and start a fire. • Avoid using extension cords unless absolutely necessary. If you must use an extension cord with your electric heater, make sure it is marked with a power rating at least as high as that of the heater itself. Keep the cord stretched out. Do not permit the cord to become buried under carpeting or rugs. Do not place anything on top of the cord. • Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture or the like. Never use heaters to dry wearing apparel or shoes *Compiled by Brilliant Basics.

“I’m not sure who to vote for; they all have their flaws, but I decided to vote because I wanted a say in the party that runs our country. I have one vote, but if everyone else votes like I do [for the same party], it is big,” said 20-year-old first-time voter Sharon Teeling; many voters shared her sentiment. Sharon Teeling (20) and her mother. While many people waited in line to make their mark for a better South Africa, some citizens did not see the point of voting. We also spoke to a few of them: “I don’t see the reason to vote. It doesn’t make a difference. I have voted before, for Mbeki and Zuma,
but we have had no service delivery and we don’t get better pay. I live in Daveyton; there are no roads and we still live in shacks. There are only a few RDP houses. I voted last time because I thought they would make a change. It’s all corruption. Even if I vote for another party, it is
still a person with power to do whatever they want. I am proANC because they brought freedom to us. Where would I be without them? I will watch what the parties do with these elections and decide if I will vote next time,” said 28-yearold Daveyton resident, Salome Phetla.

Europe, here we come Benoni High School has been very hard at work raising funds for the Benoni High Euro Tour. On 8 May the learners’ parents hosted a very successful Golf Day at the Benoni Lake Club, where various community business representatives sponsored and played the Better Ball Stableford competition, to help raise funds for the tour. The Euro Tour is a cultural tour organised by Benoni High School for grade 10, 11 and matric art, design and history scholars. The tour will stretch over 11 days; covering popular cultural destinations such as Amsterdam, Venice, Paris and Rome, among others. “It is so important, these folks
will be ambassadors for the country. They’ll represent the eastern communities and communities in Benoni. This has so much to do with experience of exposing the children to different cultures and different places. This must become an annual tour to keep Bnoni High School’s name incredibly high,” said Eugene Rooyakkers, HOD of Humanities and co-in-charge of the tour. According to Wendy Lottering, Design and Creative Arts Educator at Benoni High School, the fluctuating currency between the Rand/Pound has sky-rocketed the tour costs per learner. Since January, the tour costs have gone up by approximately 15%, which meant that the parents had to fork out more money than they had budgeted for initially. Benoni High School and parents of the learners going on tour are therefore hosting fund raising events to cover the added costs. They leave for Europe on 28 June. The parents would like to thank all the sponsors and players for making it possible for their children to have this experience.

John Vlismas wants you to go an exploration with him through the fiery depths of the world coming to an end and will share the fate of mankind with you. Are you brave enough for these Revelations? If you are book your tickets to Revelations- Sacred Cow Apocalypse at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City on 23 and 24 May. Vlismas promises to attack: family, friends, children, peace, hope, faith and charity, as well as an all-out attack on the current president, or “that totally busted thief of an **shole” as he refers to the head of state. tame TIMES caught up with the comedic prophet to hear why people should go watch this show.
How does Revelations differ to 40? This show is all-new material. Where the theme was turning 40 at the last show, this show is all about the idea of the end of the world. What do you like about performing at Gold Reef City? The Lyric Theatre is my favourite venue in the country, not only is it a classic room with excellent gear, but most importantly, the resident team are the best I have worked
with. We have become close and share a very good creative relationship. This shows includes a band- where did this stem from? I have always loved live music and try wherever I can to include it in my shows. I think it’s great to use a show as an excuse to put on a hot band for the crowd, why not? What made you incorporate multimedia? I am a huge fan of merging technology and live performance, I feel it elevates the experience and embraces progress. Augmented reality is currently being implemented subtly into our lives, so it makes sense to do so with entertainment. If you were stuck in an elevator alone with Steve Hofmeyer how would it play out? I don’t know, I have never been stuck in a lift with a fading narcissist who places album sales before moral integrity, so hard to say. What is your comedic inspiration? Reality, humanity and profanity. Why should people come watch Revelations? Because it would be sad to be standing there on my own in front of empty chairs? What are you going to reveal? This show will include an all-out attack on my own sacred cows, a roast of President Zuma (I have done so many roasts with

Is your business legally compliant? Any business with more than five people has a legal obligation to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act. According to Section 8 of the OHS Act, every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of its employees. In this instance, the term ‘business’ applies across the board to any working environment; from schools, factories or home industries, to big corporate companies. Many of the safety hazards at work start with potential safety risks that go unnoticed. It is therefore crucial to ensure that your business is properly assessed for potential health and safety risks; not only to prevent serious accidents, but also to comply with the OHS Act. Employers have a legal and moral obligation to look after their workers, as well as the environment. If you are in search of a company that could conduct a risk assessment for your business, then look no further than Brilliant Basics: Brilliant Basics is a company that specialises in risk management and empowers

Back on the road Sonja Laxton completed her 81st Spar Women’s Challenge in Port Elizabeth on 3 May in a time of 57.12 minutes. It was not her best time, but for fans of the runner who has more than 70 national titles to her name, it was a time to celebrate. On November 17 last year, Laxton was hit by a car during a training run. She suffered multiple fractures, including shoulders, elbows, ribs, ankle and spine, and spent some time in intensive care at the Milpark Hospital. Many thought she would never be able to run again, but Sonja’s indomitable spirit saw her back on the road in less than six months. “It came as a surprise to me when I heard she was running,” said her husband, Ian, who is the manager of the Spar Grand Prix. “We’d been on holiday in the Eastern Cape, and Sonja must have hidden her RAC clothes at the bottom of her suitcase, because we arrived in Port Elizabeth and she told me she was going to run.” Despite a swollen ankle and a still painful shoulder, Laxton was the third grandmaster to finish, well ahead of the 70 minutes Ian had predicted. Her daughter Kim finished in 16th place, in 36.13 minutes, and immediately made her way back to find her mother and escort her to the finish line. “I’m so proud of Sonja,” said Ian. “And the time she did is amazing, when you remember how badly she was injured.” RECOVERING BUT RUNNING: Sonja Laxton competed in the Port Elizabeth leg of the Spar Women’s Challenge after being hit by a car last year.*Pictures credit: Reg Caldecott.

Going green In February last year the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, and Nissan South Africa launched South Africa’s first zero emission electric vehicle program.
BRC Ladies after the tournament.
The aim of this program is to contribute to the reduction of environmentally harmful gasses, by promoting the use of cleaner sources of fuel in the motor industry. These zero emission vehicles, or “green cars”, have started appearing in Nissan dealer branches across South Africa as demos, and more models are being supplied. According to Darius Olivier from the Nissan Menlyn branch, this car is environmentally friendly because it does not run on petrol. Petrol cars release carbon dioxide, which pollutes the environment. These green cars use batteries that supply
the vehicle with power. Green cars can be charged at charging stations, or one can purchase a charging station kit with the car. With the increasing fuel price, green cars are also much cheaper to maintain: according to Darius, if one travels 2000 km per month, it will work out approximately R2820 for a fuel car and R350 for electric green cars. Currently, green cars cost about R478 000, including the charging station kit.

Disappointing defeat for Lions
Aaron Smith tackled by Faf de Klerk (Getty Images) The Lions and Highlanders were neck and neck during Saturday’s nail-biting Super Rugby game in Dunedin, where the Lions lost 22-23 to the Highlanders. The Highlanders were comfortably leading at half time with a score of 23-0, but the Lions were relentless and in the end lost with only one point. The Highlanders already planted their first try within the third minute of play, while the Lions only gained momentum in the second half. The Highlanders accumulated all their points in the second half, but battled to break through the Lions’ strong wall of defence in the second half.
Faf de Klerk scored the Lions’ first try during the 42nd minute: the Lions won a penalty in the Highlander’s 22m area and opted for lineout; Stefan Watermeyer pushed forward towards the goal posts, and De Klerk planted the ball to score. Lionel Mapoe scored a second try for the lions, which made it increasingly difficult for the Highlanders to keep up their defence. Warren Whiteley scored a third try, but Marnitz Boshoff missed the conversion. Lion Courtnall Skosan scored their final try in the 79th minute. The Lions scored all their points in the second half and almost boasted a miraculous comeback victory. The deciding kick conversion came down
to replacement Elton Jantjies, who had to convert their fourth and final try with a kick from the corner to win the game. Jantjies kicked the ball, which seemed to be heading straight through the posts, but it struck the posts and bounced back; handing the victory back to the Highlanders. The Lions received two bonus points: one for losing by less than seven points, and an additional point was awarded for scoring four tries. The Highlanders got four bonus points for winning the game. The Lions are currently ranked eleventh on the combined Super Rugby log and the Highlanders are sixth.

OFF THE PITCH
By Craig Norris
The IPL has certainly kept us on our toes over the past three weeks, with daily entertainment. It seems at the moment that it is like a weekly soapie in our living rooms for the cricket purists, that never has an ending. The Proteas players taking part are certainly getting in much needed practice before the international schedule gets back on track. As far as the South African boys go, AB De Villiers and David Miller have been the stand out players in the IPL this year for their respective teams; and both have recorded unbelievable strike rates in helping their Indian franchises win most of their games. On a more important note, I wait in anticipation for the announcement of the new Proteas Captain. Former South African opening batsman, Andrew Hudson met with his co-selectors last Friday and we are still to hear the outcome of this meeting regarding the touring squad for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka; and more importantly the appointment of the new Proteas captain. I am sure that you would agree with me, that most of the South African cricketing public would want to see AB De Villiers taking the responsibility of leading the Proteas, not in just the test arena, but in all formats of international cricket. I strongly believe that a cricketing nation should only have one cricket captain. I know that there has been many a different combination of captains between the three formats across the cricketing nations, but I personally believe that this is not the solution. Ask yourself this-Which format is more important and the most respected? It must surely be test match cricket, which tests a player’s ability to concentrate over five days, physically and mentally, with fitness being the main contributor. A test player in his own right should adapt to any format of cricket. Going forward, the Proteas’ tour to Sri Lanka which consists of three ODI games and two test matches, will hopefully see a couple of new faces. In the spinning department, I hope that Dane Piedt gets his opportunity to bowl alongside the incumbent spinner in Imran Tahir, as well as the young batsman in Rilee Rossouw, whom has consistently scored runs in the domestic competition for the Knights, will hopefully make his test debut. Let’s hope that the new skipper and management will win back the status of the number one test playing nation we recently held.
