Voting for a better future By Amy-Mae Campbell
Hon. Kenneth Meshoe casts his ballot.
On Wednesday 7 May South Africans had the opportunity to partake in the fifth democratic elections in South Africa. Hundreds of voters eagerly queued outside local voting stations to draw a firm cross; ensuring that their voices were heard. Many political party presidents were also seen casting their votes to support their parties. African Christian Democratic Party(ACDP) President, Kenneth Meshoe, who is a Boksburg local, cast his vote at Parkdene Primary School in Boksburg. The ACDP got 104, 039 national valid votes (0.57%) and 27, 196 provincial votes for Gauteng (0.62%). The ACDP are ranked as the ninth most popular party, based on the national 2014 election results, with a total of three seats in Parliament. The ANC once again won this year's elections, with 62.15% national votes and 53.59% of votes in Gauteng. The DA came second in this year's elections nationally and provincially, with 30.78% of votes in Gauteng and 22.23% nationionally. Meshoe shared his thoughts on this year's elections: "I have mixed feelings. On the one side I disappointed that ACDP did not improve on the last results, but I am glad that we managed to keep our three seats in parliament. I was shocked that the ANC won, because I did not expect them to get such a large amount of votes with all the scandal objections. This time it will not be that easy for the ANC; the parties will stand together for Zuma's impeachment," Meshoe said.
