A few of the children who participated in the Games On Friday 16 May over 1000 children from crèches throughout Ekurhuleni participated in the 2014 Ekurhuleni Kiddies Games. The Kiddies Games is an annual event, which forms part of the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport and Recreation’s Early Childhood Development Programme, with the overall aim of encouraging youngsters to participate in sport to keep them healthy and busy. “This is a very important programme for us as a Department, because the Early Childhood Development Programme teaches them [the children] co-ordination. They are not playing

for championships at this particular moment; they are just recreating. We expect that as time goes on, some are going to be influenced by this and go to sport,, others will play sport, others will be coaches, and others will be trainers. From this programme we may identify talent,” said Cllr Zeni Tshongweni, Ekurhuleni MMC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. According to the Ekurhuleni Director of Sport and Recreation, Atwell Sijadu, the initiative promotes sport and encourages mass participation in sport from a young age. Since the programme started in 2003, it has grown significantly: over 400 preschools in Ekurhuleni took part in the 2014 Games.

This year, 35 crèches and their top young competitors made it through to the Metro finals on 16 May. The children, who are all between 5 and 6-years-old, took part on three different levels: area games, regional games and metro games. A few of the sport activities completed included: cycling, ball dribbling, ball kicking, ball hopping, among other ball activities, as well as balancing and ring-throwing. All the crèches that participated in the metro finals received medals and certificates of participation. The top scoring children also won equipment prizes to encourage and enable them to continue playing sport at home.

his week our news team has compiled a lovely human interest newspaper, with many stories that show just how talented and interesting the Boksburg community is. From local pageant finalists, to business women who are well in charge of their destinies.

MeetlocalMissEarthSAfinalist Boksburg local Shannon Roscher has been selected as one of this year’s Miss Earth South Africa finalists. With her big heart and her passion for the environment, Shannon is well on her way to winning the Miss Earth title.

According to Shannon, the Miss Earth pageant is not just a beauty pageant, but an opportunity for young women to learn how to sustain the environment, and to provide the finalists with a platform from which they can uplift the community: “Miss Earth covers every aspect to sustain the earth. With Miss Earth we literally have to get down and dirty, we do everything ourselves. When we do community work, we do community work; we

In order for Shannon to win this prestigious title, and the opportunity to uplift the community, she is expected to collect donations and raise funds for her charity projects- all before the finals in August. As a Boksburg local, Shannon has made it her goal to help those in need around the East Rand especially. However, Shannon cannot complete this task on her own, and would be very grateful if the community could help her with sponsorships and donations, such as blankets, can food, clothes and garden tools. If you would like to help Shannon make Earth a better place, then contact her on 074 378 6139. It is all for a wonderful and sustainable cause.

don’t just stand and take a photo. That for me is the biggest thing, because you are actually implementing change,” Shannon explained. On her Miss Earth journey so far Shannon has had the opportunity to prove that she is able to do just that: one of her assignments instructed each finalist to start a vegetable garden at a school in an impoverished area, as part of a sustainable feeding scheme. Even though the girls only needed to sustain the garden for a month, Shannon decided that she would sustain her garden at Dawn Park High School for a whole year. “The whole school is built out of containers. For some of the children there, the meal they get at school is their only meal for the day. It is heart-breaking,” Shannon said.

IEC concludes election process

Advocate Pansy Tlakula; Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) handed over the final list of elected representatives for the National Assembly and the nine provincial legislatures to the Chief Justice of South Africa; Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, on Friday 16 May.

Party representation in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature:

Democratic Alliance (DA): 23 members

African National Congress (ANC): 40 members

Vryheidsfront Plus (VF): 1 member

The publication of the final list of representatives elected is the final milestone of the 2014 national and provincial election process and paves the way for the swearing in of the 830 representatives – 400 in the National Assembly and 430 in the nine provincial legislatures. The first sitting of the Fifth Parliament will be convened in terms of section 51

break from politics. A break from politics? Does Ramphele know that her party is less than a year old? How is she already tired? This says a lot about her ability or perhaps readiness to govern. As though that was not enough, the threat of a vote of no confidence in Ramphele’s leadership surfaced again as in Gauteng her constituency has gone as far as blaming her of running the party like a tuck-shop. Thankfully Agang performed miserably in the general election, I mean think about it, if the party is in such a state what would have become of the country if they actually won? It’s really sad and slightly entertaining; perhaps there is a reality show here if anyone is interested –

being Ramphele. On the topic of sad – a decision by a young lady to better herself through education has caused far too much drama than I would have thought it should. So DA’s former parliamentary leader takes up an opportunity to further her studies and in the wake of that decision has to suffer a public assassination and disregard of all her efforts. Although the fall out between Helen Zille and Mazibuko has always been something the party denied, statements like “I made Mazibuko” don’t only prove otherwise, but they threaten the structural integrity of the DA’s glass house. This has always been a question I struggled with when it comes to

The public assassination of Lindiwe is not unique to the DA, we have seen this trend with in the ANC, COPE, and many other political parties where a difference in thinking is automatically followed by the proverbial ‘cold’ Malema spoke about after his expulsion from the ANC. Graduates of the highest quality On Thursday 15 May Emperors Palace held a sophisticated graduation ceremony for the Peermont Education Trust Lesedi Programme graduates. Every year Emperors Palace gives local youth the opportunity to complete a variety of professional courses, while working at Emperors Palace as training. This training opportunity enables the students to gain practical and theoretical experience that will assist them in finding jobs in the hospitality and tourism sector. This year, 46 learners graduated under the Peermont Education Trust Lesedi Programme; the graduates received certificates for the following qualifications: food and beverage, professional cookery, front reception and aslo electrician NQF level 2-3. To date, the programme has assisted over 500 learners and over R56 million has been spent on university scholarships and the Lesedi Programme. The Trust also boasts a 100% pass rate and a 100% employment rate of its qualified electricians. The training provided is accredited and learners are offered the opportunity to apply for an additional management qualification, or to complete their trade tests. The programme trustees provide life skills training as well, to assist the students with job seeking skills. The general aim of the training

provided under this Trust is to address skills shortage and unemployment among the youth in South Africa. At the end of the day, the graduates are armed with a valuable qualification and solid practical experience, which enables them to contribute to South Africa’s economy. “We as the Peermont Education Trust are proud to be able to support and unleash such talent that we have in the country. The Lesedi Industrial Development Programme was disarmed to offer a unique solution to the problem of unemployment, especially in Ekurhuleni, by offering training opportunities to the youth of Ekurhuleni to enable them to become economically active,” said Tshidi Madima, Chairperson of the Peermont Education and Children’s Trust. While they were hard at work patrolling the area surrounding the voting stations during elections, the police also ensured that they made their mark.

The Boksburg North Communications Service supplied the following information regarding the Stop and Search Procedure: When the police indicates for a vehicle to pull over, it is either because the vehicle appears to be suspicious, or because it could be linked to a crime/ committed a crime. Sometimes the SAPS might pull over a vehicle that fits the description of the one for which they are searching. This is how the procedure should work: • The police may switch on their sirens and lights and will preferably stop behind the suspicious vehicle. • The occupants of the suspicious vehicle may be requested to step out of the vehicle. If the police request that you step out of the vehicle; by refusing to do so, it will create further suspicion; especially if the occupants are blatantly ignoring the policeman’s instructions. If the occupants appear to be very hesitant

and non-co-operative, the police may remove their firearm (typically a rifle or pistol) and point it towards the ground. This is merely for the safety of the officers and people in the vicinity. • The police may also approach the vehicle with their weapons ready if they feel that their safety is compromised. One officer could approach the car from the left, and the other from the right. This is to cover one-another. • Police will conduct a stop and search procedure after the occupants have exited the car. • Stop and Search Procedures may be initiated by a routine roadblock, or by a police patrol. • When you as a driver is being followed by a police vehicle and you feel unsure or uncomfortable to stop, drive slowly to the nearest police station, or phone 10111 and ask the operator to verify whether the vehicle following you is a legitimate police vehicle.

Murder Boksburg investigation North SAPS arrests progresses On 6 May an unknown man was shot in front of the Scrap Metal Dealer on Main Street, Witfield. The investigation is pending. However, on 12 May Warrant Officer Rudie Bezuidenhout went to visit the same Scrap Metal Dealer and found that the owner has applied for a Second Hand Dealer licence, which has not yet been approved. Warrant Officer Bezuidenhout arrested the owner and opened a case. He was given a fine and the business was closed until a licence has been issued. All scrap was removed from the premises. The premises was also searched for any other illegal activities, but none was found.

Crime tip of the week: Juanita Coetzer, Communications Officer at Boksburg North SAPS, warns the youth, especially school learners, to be vigilant when walking home alone from school. She encourages learners to walk home in groups of at least three, to make it more difficult for a criminal to execute his/her plans. She also warns that earphones are a big safety hazard, as you are not concentrating on your surroundings and cannot hear someone approaching you. Lastly, the youth should be careful when operating cell phones in public, as this immediately shows a criminal that you have valuable goods to steal. Prevention of a crime is always better than cure.

NOTICEBOARD tame TIMES advertising pays off

“Nee man by die see gaan die sand net oral in,” sal Gysie my toesnou.

Business owner and leverage: how often do you ask yourself this question? *Compiled by Elsa Groenewald, a certified business coach Most business owners I talk to indicated that they have decided to go into business for more freedom and to work for themselves. Perhaps the reason why they started their own business was as a result of them working for a lunatic before, The sad part is, now they have no freedom and they are self-employed. If you can relate then you will probably nod your head when I say most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their personal and business growth. Successful and driven business owners are very busy. To be a highly-successful driven business owner, one must find ways to receive leverage through delegation - not to be confused with abdication. Delegation takes pro-active actions: the not yet urgent, but most important tasks are done in advance such as planning, defining clear objectives, job descriptions and relationship building. Abdication often occurs at the last minute and is the result of procrastination, lack of communication, poor focus and limited planning. This ends up costing more time fixing mistakes and quite often is where the business owner spends most of his time. There are four key areas of leverage in every business: 1.People and Education 2.Delivery and Distribution 3.Testing and Measuring

Page 5

tame TIMES

4.Systems and Technology By leveraging on these four key areas, the business owner gain control and the business can run without him. Identify the KPI’s which will provide you with key information to base critical business decisions on. If you are a serious business owner and value your time then ask yourself the following questions: • Do you have strategies that will allow you to create more activities which will pay you forever, rather than just once every time you do it? • How would you use the free time you’ve created by managing a team of top performers that runs like a well-oiled machine? ActionCOACH has a total of over 71 proven strategies to improve each of these key areas you can implement in your business right now, how many do you have up your sleeve? Ready for implementation? • Think about an area of the business that consistently distracts you, needs your constant input, or happens on a repetitive basis. Are there any parts of these tasks that with the proper systems and delegation could be done by a lower wage person? • How much more business and more referrals would you get if you could focus your attention on the growth of the business more often? Implement those strategies now and improve your business to allow you more free time to work ON your business rather than IN your business.

Election results require strengthening of civil society Civil rights organisation AfriForum said that the more than 60% support for the ANC in the election again underlined the need for strong civil organisations which can hold the ruling party accountable outside party politics. According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, civil organisations from minority communities also have a crucial watchdog function to fulfil in order to protect the rights of minorities. “Instead of being disheartened after every election, minorities should realise that the demographics of the country will always leave them marginalised. They should not pin their hopes on elections only,” Kriel said. This does not mean that an election or the important work of opposition parties do not matter, Kriel added. This is a call for minorities to do more to ensure their own future rather than simply drawing a cross every five years. According to Kriel minorities will have to take responsibility for their own

futures by uniting in strong, independent civil institutions of their choice. These institutions should work for a better future, independent of party politics, in every walk of life. “It is empowering to put one’s hand to the plough with projects which can be run independently. This prevents one from being at the mercy of one-party governments,” Kriel added. Examples of these independent actions include projects where local communities can take steps to improve their own quality of life, Kriel said. “It is important that minorities do not regard themselves as victims of the recent history or the election result, but that they become involved in selfhelp projects and support civil institutions of their choice,” Kriel added. “Thousands of people who each do something in their own communities to create a better future are able to make a massive difference,” said Kriel. No contribution can ever be insignificant

Letter to the Editor

Boksburg resident Wolf Hartung writes:

The Boksburg Town Council does not exist anymore in that it now falls under the mega municipality or Metro, Ekurhuleni. I wish this change had not taken place, because of matters which are now taking place and are making me unhappy. I am going to list a few hereunder. Also, the continuous money shortages, which now appear to be experienced by the “Boksburg Municipality” are now the apparent cause for our town and townships having deteriorated to such an extent that it has become evident that either funds have been misappropriated, or a serious form of negligence and mismanagement; perhaps corruption is taking place. The filths which is evident in Boksburg is hair-raising. A serious attempt needs to be made to improve the cleanliness of our town. I have listed below my experience with office staff at the “Boksburg Council”: 1. I have been living here in Boksburg for since 1972. and I was able to speak with the Mayors virtually at regular intervals. These days I have not seen the present mayor in my area. In the beginning I asked people at the Germiston Ekurhuleni various intervals to meet with the mayor but Ekurhuleni Mayors were too busy to meet with a minor mortals like me. Our town is in a shocking mess and all I wanted to ask him as to where the money disappeared which was earmarked to keep our towns clean. In the seventies and eighties I worked in the

Townships for a Bank and I found towns and townships clean which is not the in the new Ekurhuleni. I shall be pleased if Tame Times could address this aspect in the news paper. 2. My greater anger is that on Thursday I needed to speak to people in the Boksburg Council, but the six people with whom I tried to speak did not answer their telephones. I tried at various times during the day without any response. I then went to the Boksburg offices and the person whom I normally see was not in his office and so were other senior people with whom I tried to speak. In desperation I went to the ground floor where a very charming senior lady attended to my problem. The reason as to why I am taking this matter up is firstly because of the lack of response to my phone calls, but mainly the atmosphere needs to be seriously looked into. When I told her that I phoned her office a few times she was quite taken aback in that she had asked somebody to look after her phone while she was at a meeting. I did not quote names at this stage. 3.There is a need to improve public relations at the Boksburg Town Council and I noticed that the people working there do not indicate that they want to be of assistance but are rather offish. I am 79 years of age and I have threatened some of the lethargic council employees that I should cause some form of public disobedience to wake them up. Perhaps I should be allowed to give them lectures as to improve public relations?

Let Vodacom be your first What will be your first? This is the question Vodacom is asking you. Vodacom, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, launched its First campaign at The Venue, Melrose Arch on 16 May and explained how they are giving people across South Africa the opportunity to pitch their first – a new initiative aimed at encouraging everyone to do something remarkable for the first time. Vodacom, using mobile technology, will then bring the experience to life. Comedian Mpho Popps entertained the crowd sharing his story of his first time... it lasted 1 min 26 seconds and he said he was overwhelmed with so much joy when he made his first phone call on a cell phone. Guests went down memory lane with Vodacom showing their classic adverts and now Vodacom want you to make your own memories with your first. “We sometimes forget how much mobile technology has transformed life in South Africa over the last 20 years. We take it for granted that everyone is now always in contact, that we can check out email while waiting in the supermarket queue, and that we can share thoughts and pictures from an important event in real time. Every day, mobile technology enables us to do new things, and this is the basis of our Firsts campaign. We love that sense of wonder and excitement when you do something new and truly different and Pitch Your First is our ways to support you in achieving whatever First you’ve got in mind,” said Mosidi Seretlo, Vodacom’s Executive Head of Brand Communications. People who have a compelling First idea can pitch their ideas at www. firsts.com. A panel of Vodacom judges will then select the best proposals from 10 shortlisted finalists: the shortlist will then be put to an online public vote, with

one winner seeing their dream become a reality. When asked what if a person says they want to go to Paris for the first time, Motsamai Pule, Vodacom’s Marketing Manager: Brand & Network replied, “What ever you first thing is, Vodacom will make it happen.” He added that the budget is R400 000 and the person needs to be 18 years and older and will need to be available between October and December so they can experience their first. Entries close in August. Vodacom is also encouraging people to video their own reactions using a smartphone or tablet as they achieve something amazing for the first time. These short videos – capturing the joy, surprise and excitement at the exact moment in someone’s life when they achieve something amazing for the first time – are what Vodacom calls Lifies. To officially launch the campaign, Vodacom screened the world’s first Lifies, which captured the expressions of 53 people as they experience their First. These included a 69-year-old man riding a zip-line, a young boy riding a horse, a couple seeing the first scan of their unborn child and a man conducting an orchestra. LEARNING: The learners were all very excited to learn more about digital trends. Sunward Park High School made history last year when they went 100% digital. Sunward Park High School is the first public school in South Africa to go completely digital; teaching and learning using e-books and tablets. This year the school started another trend, and hosted its first e-learning day called “e” NDABA, where learners, parents and other schools could come to learn more about technology in schools. Throughout the day various technology and digital lectures were being held in the various classes for the visitors to attend. A few of these lectures covered content creation, Google apps, developing Android apps, e-book workshops and personalised educations frameworks, movie-making, and much more. According to Mr Enoch Thango, Deputy Principal at Sunward Park High School,

their school has been the guinea pigs in the going digital transition: there have been many challenges, such as connectivity, educating the teachers about using technology in teaching and reliable tablets, but through this the school has developed a system that works. According to Mr Thango, the schools must work together to use the digital teaching environment to their advantage. The “e” NDABA is the first step in this direction: “We thought: let us have a session where we can invite all our partners, invite some of the schools to come and have a look in terms of what we have done. And those who are still aspiring to join the system. We want to collaborate with them, where we can share our expertise in the different subjects,” explained Mr Thango. From this year onwards, the “e” NDABA will be an annual event at Sunward Park High School.

Trotse rugbymanne Young Generations star

Siyamthanda Moyo (on the right) and her friend, Koketso Sibiya.

Volgens mnr.

SPOGSKOOL: Die kunsjuffrou, mev.

Van Dyk Primary School is very proud of their grade one learner, Siyamthanda Moyo, who acts in the Generations soapie. According to Louise Marais, a teacher at Van Dyk Primary School, this little actress is a big celebrity at school: “When their friends realised who they were, they were all over them. We had to sit the learners down and explain to them that [she] is also just a normal child, like everyone else,” Marais said. Siyamthanda plays the character Chistina, Sibusiso’s daughter in Generations. According to Siyamthanda’s father, Luyanda Nyali, she has been acting since she was one, and her dream is to be a movie star: “She started

acting in Generations a while ago. I was so surprised, because we registered her with an agency, but we were not sure [if she would land the part]. I’m so proud of her, she is a wonderful kid,” Nyali said. Siyamthanda stays with her family in Boksburg, and they travel to Auckland Park every week, after school, for Siyamthanda to shoot her scenes for each new episode. “We take her after school, so that it does not interfere with her school work,” said her father, who believes that her school work must come first. Siyamthanda’s family supports her all the way, as long as she is happy, and they are confident that she has what it takes to take SA’s next Oscar.

Credit amnesty: consumers must still pay debts The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments, commonly referred to as the “credit amnesty”, came into effect on 1 April 2014. This meant that from 1 April 2014, all registered credit bureaus (listed below) should remove adverse consumer credit information on their systems for a period of two months until the end of May 2014. The adverse consumer credit information that credit bureaus needed to remove from 1 April 2014 includes: • Subjective classifications of consumer behaviour such as: delinquent, default, slow paying, absconded or not contactable; • The adverse classification of enforcement action, i.e. those that are related to enforcement action taken by credit providers including classifications such as: handed over for collection or recovery, legal action or write off; • Details and results of disputes lodged by consumers irrespective of the outcome of such disputes; and • Adverse consumer credit information contained in the payment profile represented by means of any mark, symbol, sign or in any manner or form. “Paid up judgments, which means civil court

judgment debts, including default judgments where the consumer has settled the judgment debt, should also be removed from the credit bureau records from 1 April 2014,” Nomsa Motshegare, CEO of the National Credit Regulator (NCR) said. Where a consumer has paid the judgment debt, the credit provider must notify the credit bureau of this within seven days of receiving the payment. The credit bureau must remove that judgment from the consumer’s credit record within seven days of receiving proof of payment. The consumer no longer has to apply to a court to rescind the judgment so that it can be removed from his/her credit record. “This will save consumers a lot of money that they could have paid to lawyers,” Motshegare added. From 1 April 2014 until the end of May 2014, credit bureaus must not display this information on consumers’ credit records. Motshegare stresses that consumers are, however, still liable to pay their debts. Motshegare said there has been confusion and misconceptions around the process. “We have also found that some consumers don’t know where and how to get a copy of their credit reports”, she said. Below, Motshegare shares common misconceptions about removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments:

• It is a credit amnesty and it will wipe out their debt (they are no longer obligated to pay the debt); NCR response – Consumers must pay their debts. • The payment profile will be removed and they will start on a clean slate; NCR response – The payment profile will remain on the consumer’s credit bureau records. • When the credit bureaus have removed the consumer’s adverse or paid up judgment(s), the consumer’s name will no longer appear at the credit bureaus-NCR response Consumers must realise that every person who has an account anywhere in South Africa with a credit or service provider, who makes use of credit bureau services, will find the information about the account is recorded with a credit bureau, irrespective of whether the account is paid regularly or not. • After the information is removed, they will automatically get credit-NCR response – That is not so, credit providers are required to conduct an affordability assessment before granting credit. • You pay an extra fee to get the information removed in terms of this process over and above your debt-NCR response – The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments is automatic and free. In

conclusion,

Motshegare

advised

consumers to contact the National Credit Regulator or the Credit Ombud for any clarity or assistance. She further advised consumers to contact the credit bureaus for a copy of their credit reports. Scholz is back There are those who would tell you he never left, but for anyone in doubt, fortysomething Michael Scholz said “I’m back” in the only way he knows. The renowned South African golfing personality and trick shot specialist proved there is life in the old dog yet, when he claimed the first IGT Race to the USA event at Irene Country Club last Tuesday. Six shots off the pace at the start of the final round, the 43-year-old Scholz rocked to victory with a sevenunder-par 65.

Tennis South Africa has named their junior players to be part of the South African team to compete in the 2nd Africa Youth Games. The Africa Youth Games will be held in Gaborone, Botswana from 22 to 31 May. The tennis team will be part of 19 sporting codes making up the South African team. The Games are an important multi-code event serving as Africa’s preparation for the upcoming second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China later this year. SASCOC President Gideon Sam said that the 2nd African Youth Games are very important for the future of South African sport. “We need to build our sport from the

bottom up and as such; this event will go a long way to exposing our talented youngsters to international competition and giving them valuable experience.” The holding camp for Team SA was in Johannesburg on 19 May and the team leaves for Gaborone today to set up camp at the University of Botswana residence. The South African tennis team is announced as follows: Boys: Richard Thongoane (Gauteng Central) and Kris van Wyk (Boland) Girls: Janet Koch (Boland), Sarah Sarjoo (Gauteng Central) The team coach will be Patrick Tsunke (Gauteng East).

Thaba Trails situated at 101 Klipriver Drive, Mulbarton on the land privately owned by Thaba Ya Batswana. The XCO distances for UCI racing can be between 4km and 6km. At Thaba Trails a challenging 4,5km course is being designed to challenge the most skilled riders. There are six technical drop-offs that give

riders an adrenaline rush and are of difficulty levels that will be up to expectations of international riders from all corners of the world.
