Award-winning Boksburg resident and NATIONAL LEADER talks to us Justus Abrams
justusabrams@gmail.com
“I believe that every group of people, whether we agree with them or not, whether we like them or not, has a right to life,” says Reverend Kenneth Meshoe. Kenneth Meshoe, the President of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and Boksburg resident, was recently awarded the ‘Jerusalem Award’ in Nigeria. This award was presented to him by the Embassy of Israel, Abuja in recognition of his “defence, over the years, for the right of Israel to exist within safe and secure borders.” The Reverend said that “amidst the calls over the years for Israel to be annihilated, I said it is wrong, I said it is racism. When you want to destroy a group of people because of their religion or colour, that is racism – and we should oppose and even condemn it.” He said that the people who presented him with this award recognised the work he had done in this regard. He further added that he has disputed “the lie that Israel is an apartheid state.” He said that he “believes that if the conditions that exist in Israel today existed in South Africa, then there would not have been a need for the armed struggle.” During a visit of five Members of Parliament (MPs) to Israel, Meshoe said they visited a Jewish hospital. In the section called “Save a child’s heart” that they visited first, he said,
“
they were surprised to find that the first people they met in this section were six Muslim women and then a Jewish father with his child. The first doctor they met at the hospital was a black Ethiopian. Meshoe said that, because of this and the Israeli Parliament which includes all races, religious groups and ethnicities, the country could not be considered an apartheid state. The visit to this hospital, he said, was an eye-opener for the MPs, as these conditions would never have existed in an apartheid state, as was clear in South Africa during previous years. The Reverend said that he believes that it is out of hate for Israel that these lies and propaganda are being spread and he believes that the truth must be told, and he is standing for the truth and that is why he was given this award. The Reverend said that, although he has been outspoken on the Israel matter, the award was a surprise. In our interview with the ACDP leader, we also asked him about the current state of the nation and for his stance on the Dutch Reformed church’s decision to endorse gay and lesbian civil unions. Kenneth Meshoe’s answers to these and other issues will be found in future issues of the tame TIMES.
NEW CHIEF OF POLICE FOR EKURHULENI Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele this morning introduced Bafana Andries Mahlabe (46) as the City’s new Chief of Police. Making the announcement at the headquarters of the Municipality in Germiston, Mayor Gungubele said that after an extensive and rigorous interview process he was confident that Mahlabe was the right man for the job. “It has taken us over a year to fill this position because we were looking for the most relevant person - a person who understands the dynamics of the city and has a clear vision on how to win the battle against crime. During the interviews Mahlabe demonstrated such and we are convinced that he has what it takes to take us into the future,” the Mayor explained. “Our Metro Police is only 13 years old and therefore we need a visionary who can continue from where previous police chiefs like Mongezi India, Robert McBride and Hlula Msimang left off. “While we have done a lot in the 13 years, there is plenty more that needs to be done. We are now faced with new challenges, among them violent service delivery protests, land grabs and the scourge of drugs, at the forefront of which is the notorious nyaope. We recently also saw the shocking incidents of necklacing and gangsterism in Etwatwa; and as we head towards the festive season we need to sharpen our claws more because criminals are now on the prowl. “Therefore there would not have been a better time to fill this position so that we ensure that the EMPD is properly led and
guided during this period of the year. It is at this time of the year, more than ever, that we must be vigilant both on the roads and in dealing with crime because this is the time of year when most of our people are vulnerable and are prone to being victims of crime,” Gungubele elaborated. Gungubele indicated that because Mahlabe is not a member of the EMPD, the City is following all necessary processes as defined in the Police Act to ensure that the appointment is in accordance with the law. Mahlabe, who hails from Duduza in Ekurhuleni, is appointed with effect from 1 October. He takes over from Hlula Msimang, who left the post for the City of Johannesburg after completing his fiveyear term of office. The new police chief has been appointed on a five-year fixedterm contract. He will be taking an oath of office during a parade scheduled to take place in Germiston on Thursday 22 October.

residents walking past. I have been following up with the municipality over the past four months with regard to my complaint. The municipality first indicated that they couldn’t locate the open manhole. Upon locating it, I was then informed by the Department of Sewerage that the Water Department was actually responsible for
covering the manhole. When the issue was eventually reported to the Water Department, it was logged as a water leak and not an open manhole which resulted in nothing being done. In September, I followed up on the matter again via the call centre and the municipality replaced the cover. However, the new cover does not fit the manhole properly, which means it is still open criminals can still hide inside the manhole and children can fall in. Residents living in Lama Street are disappointed that the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality has failed to act timeously and effectively on this
matter. The DA believes that every citizen have the right to live in an area where children can safely play outside and residents can walk around their neighbourhood without the fear of being robbed or attacked. By failing to effectively close the manhole, the Ekurhuleni Metro has failed in their responsibility to keep the residents of Lama Street safe. I will therefore be writing to the MMC for Water, Doctor Xakaza, requesting him to intervene and ensure the manhole is properly covered as a matter of urgency.

inspiring word of encouragement was delivered by Pastor Dillop. The Level Four and Level Five students were then called up to the stage by their assigned facilitators where they were introduced and recited the Edu-Build pledge. Thereafter, a testimony of hope was given by Teacher Marion, and honorary presentations were made to the award-winning Mrs Foster and F Adolph by the Edu-Build students for being excellent facilitators. One of the messages that filtered through at the ceremony was that teachers or educators have the opportunity to mould and shape the lives of the children entrusted into their care. They are the foundation builders, the anchors and the ones who can propel these children into their God-given destinies, as the future leaders of their generation.

Edu-build Development is a developmental programme which focusses on Early Childhood Development Training and Facilitation. It was birthed by former Reiger Park educators, Mrs Foster and her daughter F Adolph. Edu-Build aims to ‘Reach, Teach and Build’ the child, as well as to empower educators spiritually, socially, emotionally and academically. This learning institution is one which is built on Christian values and therefore hosts this dedication event annually to speak a word of encouragement into the lives of their students. The event’s programme was directed by Pastor Elvin Foster who also did the opening prayer and welcome. “COMMUNITY Heart and Soul Project” [they] might as well get a step up and pick up the parent.” She said that “the social and emotional problems that exist make it difficult for the [schools] to teach.” But, she added, “the teachers cannot fix it all, so it is only through community” participation that this can be resolved. Saturday 17 October saw what can be considered the launch of a multiorganisational project called the Heart and Soul Project. The day started off with a prayer intervention by different faith-based organisations at various points in Actonville and proceeded to where the main event was at the Actonville Primary School. The day, according to people who attended and were part of organising it, was a major success, with a number of programmes being introduced to the community - such
as better parenting, career guidance, stress and anger management, drugs, alcohol and gambling abuse and a very long list of very relevant and current programmes to assist the community “to recover and to heal.” This, however, is only “the beginning of a new journey,” as Venod from the Liverpool class of ‘88 told the tame TIMES. This coming Wednesday the Women’s Forum will kick off
and the next step will be to establish Men’s and Youth Forums. Various speakers, including a member of the youth, faith-based organisations, former educators and other members of the committee who formed part of the organising committee, hailed the event as a major success and a good start to healing Actonville of its social ills.

Actonville, after the 1960s forced removals by the apartheid state’s racial segregation laws, became a predominantly Indian community. In recent years, however, this community in Benoni has become a melting pot of different races and ethnicities as it was before the 1960s. However, for various reasons, the community of Actonville has fallen on hard times, with social ills such as crime, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and other socio-economic conditions not being properly addressed and therefore worsening within the community. These unfavourable conditions spill over into the schools, where teachers find it difficult to teach children who come from an environment sometimes not harnessing a positive attitude towards the future, because of what many of these children and their parents must endure on a daily basis. The problems that educators who play a critical role in preparing children for a brighter future face daily with learners who are often too drained by the challenges they face in their home environment to be able to deliver great results at school, was identified by the Principal of Actonville Primary School, Ms Vanessa Moodley. The principal told the tame TIMES that those who are involved in the project to improve conditions for better learning have noticed a deterioration in the standard of living in Actonville and decided that there is a need to raise the quality and standard of living. She said that in order to get “a better learner,

Boksburg station commander IN HOT WATER over loan shark claims Naledi Shange of News24 published the following article, reporting on the alleged charges against the Boksburg Police Station commander. Allegedly, officers under the commander spoke to News24 about their claims. The station commander of the Boksburg Police Station is facing an internal hearing related to allegations that he ran a loan shark business on the side. News24 understands that a disciplinary hearing against Colonel Woolganathan ‘Biggs’ Govender was scheduled for this week in which he would have to answer to several claims, including that of running a dodgy loan shark business. Two police officers at the station headed by Govender told News24 their boss was feared by both common men and men of the law. The officers said they had protested against him and even laid complaints with Gauteng’s provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba.
One of Govender’s subordinates made damning allegations about his boss and accused him of engaging in suspicious activities, including a claim that he utilised state resources for personal gain. “We tried to engage with the provincial commissioner but he says we cannot do anything to [Govender]...” said the police officer, who asked not to be named. News24 approached Govender for comment on the claims. He first asked to be called at a later time but then refused to comment. “My lawyer has advised me to not speak to anyone until the matter is finalised,” he said. Even when News24 told Govender that the questions would not relate to the disciplinary hearing, he still refused to comment. Mothiba’s office, however, said it had not folded its hands after receiving the allegations. News24 understands that some senior officers had been tasked with investigating the claims.
Denials In September, News24 published an article alleging that Govender was a ruthless loan shark who charged exorbitant interest rates. At least two people who had borrowed money from Govender claimed to have fallen prey to his alleged schemes. It was alleged that Govender demanded payment sooner than expected and when the men failed to pay up, he repossessed their vehicles. He had kept the documents as collateral for the loans. The officer who spoke to News24 said some of the vehicles that Govender had repossessed had been parked at the police station. Govender denied he was a loan shark and said he had legally obtained the vehicles when the owners, who were once his associates, failed to pay money that he had loaned them, interest free. One of the two police officers who spoke to News24 alleged that the Boksburg Police
Station had received donations from an organisation called New Beginnings for renovations to the station. The officer alleged that Govender, who oversaw the entire project, had seized donated tiles, and those had been replaced with tiles of lower quality. News24 attempted to contact the donors but they were unwilling to comment. The police officer said Govender’s conduct had tarnished the entire image of the Boksburg SAPS. “The community has lost all faith in us,” he said. Meanwhile, other than the disciplinary hearing, Govender was to face a harassment case in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court later this month. Govender has also denied these claims. In his court affidavit, he said the man who had laid the charges against him was an emotionally unstable person who wanted to tarnish his image. [source: news24.com]

develop a greater tendency towards aggressive behaviours. It has furthermore been found that children with emotional, behavioural and/or learning disabilities are more easily influenced by the violent behaviours they are exposed to. Parents should thus pay closer attention to the programmes they expose their children to. Rather send the children out of the room while you are watching a programme containing violence and place a limit on what you allow them to watch.

The easiest way to find something that’s lost around the house is to buy a replacement. If at first you don’t succeed, shouldn’t you try doing it like your wife told you? A penny saved is a government oversight. The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the wrong time. 5 He who hesitates is almost certainly right. 6 Did you ever notice the Roman numerals for 40 are XL? 7 If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame. 8 The sole purpose of a child’s middle name is so he can tell when he’s really in trouble. 9 There’s always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don’t hurt! 10 The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

The 2016 Local General Elections are just around the corner – maybe not for voters, but certainly for political parties, which have to enthuse their branch members, raise funds, choose councillor candidates, put up posters, debate issues and recruit party agents. Commuters have probably already noticed the odd billboard on the highway highlighting government progress in the area of local government. The media is already experiencing an increase in press releases from political parties. The ANC recently held a presidential fundraising dinner, with companies buying tables according to a sliding-scale of fees that was, of course, calibrated according to the closeness of their chosen table to President Zuma’s. Cosatu marched for ‘decent jobs.’ The DA meted out some harsh discipline to MP stalwart Dianne Kohler-Barnard for a social

media blunder that would have been a great deal less embarrassing had it not been made less than a year before elections. A few weeks ago the EFF leader called South Africa a failed state [iol.co.za] that outsourced everything, including toilet paper. This is just the beginning. The red T-shirts, the blue T-shirts and the yellow T-shirts are still coming; along with opinion polls, posters on poles and the inevitable mudslinging – who can forget the ‘open toilet saga’ of 2011? Sadly, the real needs of those who desperately need service delivery are too often forgotten as campaigners bearing free T-shirts, berets, braaivleis - even booze - try to out-charm each other into the hearts of voters via their stomaches. And the race for easy headlines often blurs the lines between one party’s policies and those of the next. Perhaps it is time to set an upper limit on the election budgets
of our political parties. Ours is supposed to be a proportional representative system which was designed to allow maximum expression for the vibrant diversity of voices that constitute the Rainbow Nation, yet smaller parties cannot even think about competing with the DA’s blue tsunami of street posters or the ubiquitous smilingface-of-our-leader yellow T-shirts distributed by the ANC. Of course the red beret has a fashion appeal among the youth quite apart from its political significance, but somebody has to pay for all these promotional items – and the voters never seem to be informed about who the funders are. Those ‘free’ T-shirts could cost them dearly.

By Lizeth Kotze Parents often stand in disbelief about the violent behaviour their children display. Most search for an external cause but fail to realise that they might be the origin of their child’s behaviour. You might ask, “How is this possible? I do not display violent behaviours!” The answer to this question is simple: as parents, we are responsible for our children’s violent behaviour in that we allow them to watch programmes containing violence. Many studies have found that violent programmes can influence how a child thinks and behaves. Television, however, is not all bad. It can have a positive effect in that it can instil positive behaviours and value systems in our children, but only if they focus on programmes with a positive message. Watching programmes containing violence has been proved to cause the following negative effects on our children. According to (www.aacap.org), they: • become ‘immune’ to the horror of violence, • start to accept violence as a way to solve problems, • identify with violent characters, • imitate the behaviour they see,

UNITED FC YOUTH WEEK LAUNCHED
“IT’S A RUSH AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE CHARITIES AND THOSE THEY SUPPORT” children it’s the first time that they can see and touch a real horse. But more importantly, this event exposes them to potential career opportunities that an industry like horseracing can offer. It’s an opportunity they would never have had,” she says. Learners enjoyed horseriding, a jumping castle and lunch, not to mention the chance to interact with some of South Africa’s top celebrities. Actress, model and businesswoman Amanda du Pont, radio personality and DJ Alex Caige, comedian Trevor Gumbi and TV presenter and model K Naomi were there to show their support for this event. They are part of a group of 16 celebrities who will be matched with the 16 racehorses on the day. “I am excited to be here for the third year in a row. The Charity Mile is a great initiative put together by Peermont, Emperors Palace and Racing. It’s a rush and hopefully it will make a difference for the charities and those they support,” said Caige. “This is a very glamorous event but more importantly it raises much needed funds for these schools and children, funds that can give them the opportunity to be what they want to be,” said du Pont who has been involved in the Charity Mile for four years. The winning charity will receive R150 000 and the one in second place will receive R100 000 with the remaining 14 charities receiving proportionate amounts of the total donation, based on the allocated horses’ placement.

The launch of the annual Bernard Parker and Sun United FC Youth Week during the school holidays of 5 to 9 October, in which the sporting codes soccer and netball were catered for as a start, has revolutionised the October school holidays for local youngsters. “The Youth Week is intended to keep the youngsters occupied during the school holidays, and one way of doing this is through a sports programme,” said Clyde Nelson, tournament Director and Manager of Sun United FC. “Although only netball and soccer could be catered for this year, the plan is to introduce other sporting codes at future events – to attract those children who are interested in these other codes,” he added. Clyde further said that, “The fiveday event was a huge success and through generous contributions by Bernard Parker’s sponsors, Nike, Bogart Man, Clare’ products and Future Life, it was not only possible to host the event but to feed about 1 000 children and present each player that participated with a T-shirt - a special thanks to Bernard Parker, Pro-sport and the entire sponsorship team.” Bernard Parker sees such an event as an opportunity to plough back into the community he comes from and to help develop and encourage the youth and the community as a whole though positive programmes like this. Some of Parker’s team mates from Chiefs also supported the event by attending the event on the final day, while Parker was present for a few days during the week. Fifty-one soccer teams participated from under-10 to -18 and
four primary schools took part in the under-11 and -13 netball. Clyde extends special thanks to the Boksburg and Central Football Association, Sun United FC and our Clr Charles Crawford for their assistance and also to Sheldon Litchfield and everyone, including the teams and community, who made this event a success.
