Jaws-of-life used to free TRAPPED man
On the evening of Wednesday 21 October a truck collided with a motor vehicle in Benoni, leaving the driver of the motor vehicle in a critical condition. Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24, who was one of the emergency service providers on the scene, made the following statement: “A man was left in a critical condition after a light motor vehicle and truck collided on
Putfontein Road in Benoni. “ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found the light motor vehicle lying partially beneath the large truck. “On assessment, paramedics found that the driver of the light motor vehicle lay trapped and was in a critical condition. “Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to remove the roof of the vehicle, to gain access to the patient. “Once freed, paramedics provided the patient with advanced life support treatment and thereafter transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. “The driver of the truck was found to have sustained only minor injuries. He was treated and transported to a nearby hospital for further assessment. “The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.”

Galaxy ROBBER WARNING: Truck hijackings sentenced to 15 years BEHIND Neville Mosters
BARS: Auret
On Thursday 2 April at 15:40 an unknown male entered a Galaxy store armed with a firearm. He first posed as a potential customer who wanted to look at a few rings. After a short while, however, he took out a firearm and pointed it at the employee. He then forced the employee into the back office where other employees were busy counting the cash. The robber was startled by a courier who entered the shop, but before he exited the store, the robber grabbed an undisclosed amount of money and some jewellery and fled the scene. On his way out, he also pointed at the security guard with his firearm. The robber fled the scene in a black vehicle. No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained. A man was arrested a few days later on Thursday 9 April and found to be in possession of a gas pistol. The rings were later recovered. He appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s court on charges of business robbery and pointing of a firearm. On Friday 9 October Neville Auret Mosters (40) was found guilty on both charges - business robbery and pointing of a firearm and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. Lieutenant Coetzer, spokesperson for the Boksburg North Police Station, commented on the successful conviction, saying, “Well done to the investigating officers, Detective Constable Chris Hlungwani, and Detective Warrant Officer Willem Van Aswegen, who supported him during his investigation. Working together and doing everything in their powers, made this conviction possible.”

Golden Lions - 2015 Currie Cup champions
The Golden Lions are the 2015 Currie Cup champions, after defeating Western Province 32-24 in the final at Ellis Park on Saturday 24 October. The home side won all 12 of their matches, becoming the first side since the 1990s to go unbeaten in a season. It was also 11th Currie Cup title in the history of the team. After 15 minutes of sustained pressure and missed opportunities, the Lions finally opened the scoring with No 8 Warren Whiteley being put into a gap for a try. Lions centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg made the initial break but the off-load to Kwagga Smith was knocked down by an opposition player before they managed to get the ball under control, with Whiteley running into a gap to score. After missing his first two penalty attempts, flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff finally found his target by converting the try.
The first half of the encounter seemed to be a battle between the two flyhalves to see who could make the most mistakes. Western Province pivot Robert du Preez was slightly ahead, with the youngster kicking a penalty over the dead-ball line, while he also missed with a penalty conversion. The home side got over the whitewash on the quarter mark, with Ross Cronje the better of the halfbacks, finishing a move which was started by their two busy locks. The second-row combination of Lourens Erasmus and Franco Mostert was immense with their carries and crucial in sparking the try. Erasmus made the break and later in the move he sent a floating skip pass to Andries Coetzee before Cronje received the ball for the try. Four minutes later WP got into a promising position when they were awarded a penalty
which Du Preez pushed over the dead-ball line. Nearly a half-an-hour had gone by before the Capetonians finally got on to the scoresheet, with Du Preez slotting in a penalty. Six minutes from the half-time break, Janse van Rensburg showed his strength as he bashed two defenders out of the way in the midfield with Cronje scoring his brace. Boshoff missed the conversion but returned their lead to 19 points with a penalty goal before visitors got the breakthrough. Du Preez finally got the rub of the green as he took on the line from a lineout, beating his opposition en route to the tryline and converting his own five-pointer. Shortly after the break, Janse van Rensburg again bullied his way over the line, sending one of his own players who got into the firing line to the ground to score, with Boshoff converting to return the status quo.

WP pocket-rocket Cheslin Kolbe demonstrated why he is one of their danger men as he stepped his way over the advantage line. Not to be outdone by his smaller team-mate, Nizaam Carr took the ball up, swerving through tackles to touch down. Just short of the third-quarter mark Boshoff landed a long-range penalty kick to extend his side’s advantage by three points. However, WP started to make inroads and on the 62nd-minute mark, flank Sikhumbuzo Notshe scored from the back of a rolling maul which emanated from a lineout, with Kurt Coleman converting to make it an eight-point game. With no time left on the clock, WP replacement lock Chris van Zyl earned a yellow card for charging into a ruck with a penalty being overturned. It allowed the Lions to close out the game and take the title. (source:Sports24-Ockert de Villiers)
WATCH THIS SPACE: future Proteas players from Boksburg Teams from across the Eastern Region converged on the Sahara Park Cricket Stadium in Benoni for the KFC MiniCricket festival that was held on Thursday 22 October. Leonard Rajagapaul from the Eastern Gauteng Cricket Association said that this is the “flagship of [the cricket] development programme.” Throughout the year each area in the region has their own fixtures and cricket events, which are co-ordinated through the co-ordinator responsible for each respective area. This is a build-up to the annual “showpiece” where around a thousand of the most promising under-6 to under-10 junior cricketers from the different areas play each other to show what they have learned throughout the year. The mini-cricket programme accommodates both boys and girls and has been running for approximately 35 years, but has been sponsored by KFC since 2010.
YOUNGSTERS showcasing their skills
David Makoponela, Cricket South Africa’s mini-cricket manager, said the fact that eighty percent of the current Protea team came through the mini-cricket development programme is evidence that the 16 such events hosted throughout the country are producing results. The aim of this programme is to teach the youngsters, up to 10 years of age, the basics of the game – how to bat, bowl and field, but also the importance of being a team player. They are also taught respect for the game and for others. One of the team coaches who spoke to tame TIMES agreed with the fact that the programme is an excellent way to promote cricket, especially in areas where development is not easily accessible for young children. She said that it gives the children exposure to the game and can be a way for youngsters to stand a better chance of making it in the ‘big leagues.’ Mini-cricket is played with a plastic ball and
bats, in order for the youngsters to become used to handling a ball and bat, and only after 10, when they have gone through this programme, are they introduced to the hard ball. Some of the schools from the Boksburg and PRO CRICKETER: David Wiese Benoni areas included Summerfield Primary in our country, there are still those who are from Benoni, Reiger Park Primary and Drommedaris Primary from unfortunately not giving their all to help ensure Boksburg and a few other schools from the this programme is promoted in their areas. David Wiese, a well-known South African two areas. Ezra, who is the main co-ordinator for this cricketer, said that this programme is very annual festival and someone who was also good for encouraging children to love the introduced to cricket through mini-cricket and game by enjoying it while learning the basics. has been involved in cricket since then, said KFC signed a renewed contract to continue to that although this programme is very important sponsor mini-cricket development for the next and many areas understand the importance 10 years, at a cost of close to R6-million per of this and the aim to grow cricket as a sport year.
