Human trafficking – “A NATIONAL SHAME”
During the month of October various awareness campaigns are endeavouring to highlight the epidemic of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. In a 2012 article Wanda Sylvester, in the Daily Voice, interviewed Barbara Ros of the Atlantis Women’s Movement and a shelter for trafficked women. In the interview Barbara said, “I think the reason for this spike is that no one is making a noise about it; our courts are too quiet.” She added: “Traffickers especially target women and children from rural areas, and often lure them away under the pretext of jobs in the big city. “These people are poor, there are no jobs, some parents are alcoholics and don’t take care of their children,” says Barbara. “These are innocent girls who go away to work because they think they can get a better life and escape the poverty cycle.” She says trafficking rings are more sophisticated than people think. “There’s a whole network of people involved – recruiters, taxi drivers, the person waiting in the city, etc. There are even women that help with the trafficking of children and other women,” she explains. “However, girls are also taken from malls, bus stops and taxi ranks.” Barbara says traffickers treat the girls well in order to gain their trust. “The girls are drugged – it’s placed in their food and drinks – so by the time they realise they are in trouble, it is far too late,” she says. “While they are drugged, they are raped and photos are taken of them, which is used to blackmail them. “Their clothes and shoes are taken away, so that they don’t escape. Some of these girls don’t even have breasts yet.” Barbara adds: “In other cases, they are taken to clubs and brothels where they are kept drugged, beaten and abused. “They are kept prisoner and are constantly watched. “Some girls are even sold from person to person – this problem is bigger than we realise and this came to light through the active work of the City’s Vice Squad.” Barbara says trafficking is done by both local and foreign perpetrators. “One of the biggest contributing factors to trafficking is that there is too much free access to our borders,” she says. “We need more border control and national government must make sure we get our specialised units back – we really need them.” Elmarie Pretorius, a Boksburg resident and founder of Touch of Hope, who is also a member for Gauteng Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition team, partner of the National Freedom Network Gauteng and private investigator (Woman and Child Abuse Unit), released the following statement: “Human trafficking is a worldwide epidemic, and a national shame. Dark smoke cloud a major HEALTH RISK The following is an extract from a Reiger Park resident’s letter complaining about the thick black smoke cloud that can be seen over parts of Boksburg, near Delmore Park, Angelo and Reiger Park, on a daily basis, from 5pm onwards. “The squatters at East Rand Station near Angelo on a daily basis set the area alight in order to remove the stolen copper cable from the PVC covering as well as burning motorcar [tyres] to extract the wire and we are told of illegal mining taking place as well as [that] there is a disused shaft in that area. “The smoke billowing out of that area creates a very unpleasant odour as well as a dark cloud which causes poor visibility for motorists and is a definite health and safety hazard. “A similar style and type of fire was started

Modern-day slavery is fuelled by a variety of circumstances: poverty, war, natural disasters, abductions, immigrant labour, and false adoptions. Human sex trafficking is big business — global profits are estimated at $32 billion and climbing. “Is there hope? And consider giving a special donation to Touch of Hope; purchase the video Not Today so that we can continue to expand our efforts by providing food, medical aid, disaster relief, job training, and make a difference in other people’s lives.”
Elmarie is also working at erecting a Wall of Remembrance for the victims of abuse and human trafficking in the Boksburg area. The Wanda Sylvester article further explained: “A victim of human trafficking is defined as someone who is being forced or being lied to and then moved (from their home) in order to be exploited for sexual purposes (rape, porn, prostitution), cheap labour or their body parts, among other purposes. “In some cases, the person can be trafficked without being moved; ‘ownership’ of the person changes from trafficker to trafficker at a fixed location. “Parents act as traffickers of their own children by allowing others to sexually exploit them for financial reasons such as paying off debts.” Anyone wanting to contribute to the Touch of Hope campaign can email info@touchofhope. co.za or contact the Call Centre: 076 754 2043 or add BBM Pin: 515CAE7A.

by Jake Hebert, Ph.D. (In the last issue of Boksburg-Benoni tame TIMES we published an article about liquid water on Mars; so, in order for the reader to consider both ends of the scientific spectrum, we have decided to publish a counter-argument by a Young Earth Creationist Scientist. The link to this article (including references) is http://www.icr.org/ article/8980.) Scientists have announced indirect evidence of liquid water on the surface of Mars, raising hopes among secular scientists that life may be present on the ‘red planet.’ But why do they hope for this— and are such hopes realistic? Images obtained by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) show dark, narrow streaks (about 100 metres long) running downhill. These streaks, called recurring slope lineae, lengthen and darken during warm seasons but fade in cooler seasons. Spectroscopic imaging suggests that the streaks are composed of hydrated (water-containing) salts. Mars’ thin atmosphere and often frigid surface temperatures generally prevent the existence of liquid water on the surface.
Liquid water on MARS? However, the presence of salts in water would allow the water to exist as a liquid over a greater temperature range than water in a pure state. Hence, the authors of the study believe these salts enable liquid water to exist on the surface, albeit briefly. The source of water for these streaks is still unknown, although one suggestion is that the salts pull water vapour out of the Martian atmosphere in a process called deliquescence. Full confirmation of this purported discovery will be delayed, perhaps indefinitely, as an international treaty bans “harmful contamination” of celestial bodies. Vehicles and robots that have not been completely sterilized will not be allowed to approach suspected water sites in order to prevent possible contamination with microbes that may have originated on Earth. However, if Martian water is confirmed, it would definitely be a significant discovery, though not nearly as important as evolutionary scientists would like to make it out to be. First, any present-day liquid water that might exist on Mars is likely miniscule. Regarding the recurring slope linae, the NASA press release states, “Scientists say [sic] it’s likely a shallow subsurface flow, with enough water wicking to the surface to explain the darkening” [emphasis added]. Second, it has long been known that large quantities of liquid water were present on the Martian surface, although likely only for a brief time. Moreover, there is extensive evidence for catastrophic flooding on
Mars.6 It is one of the ironies of the creationevolution controversy, that evolutionary scientists have no trouble accepting the idea of catastrophic flooding on Mars (despite the presence of, at best, miniscule amounts of liquid water on the surface today), yet they vehemently deny the possibility of global catastrophic flooding on Earth, a planet of which 70% is still underwater! One might well ask, “Why are evolutionary scientists so excited about the possibility of liquid water on another planet?” Since liquid water is essential for life as we know it, they think its presence on other planets means that life might exist there. Based upon biblical considerations, most creation scientists absolutely do not expect intelligent extraterrestrial life to exist and think it is unlikely (though perhaps not impossible) that unintelligent life would exist elsewhere in the universe. Likewise, since microbes appear designed to benefit multicellular creatures (the fact that some microbes cause disease seems to be the result of genetic deterioration in a fallen world), it is unlikely that in situ microbes will be found on a desolate planet like Mars. Evolutionary scientists, on the other hand, desperately want to find extraterrestrial life because they realize that life does seem far too complicated to have arisen naturally. In their minds, finding life on other planets would somehow make the evolutionary story appear more plausible and remove the need for a Creator. In the absence of evidence for actual extraterrestrial life, finding liquid
water, a pre-requisite for life, is the next best thing. But the possible presence of liquid water on another planet does not help the evolutionary story at all. Liquid water is abundant on Earth, yet the problems with secular explanations for the origin of life on this planet are so great that even secular researchers have admitted that they do not know how life originated on Earth—as a whole they are at a complete impasse. Likewise, the presence of primordial water is actually a problem for secular origin-of-life stories: water tends to break apart complex biomolecules via chemical reactions known as hydrolysis. So although liquid water is necessary for life, its presence is actually destructive to the very biomolecules that are supposedly in the process of forming in a primordial soup! Hence, even if in situ microbial life were to be found on Mars, its existence would still require a miracle, as even single-celled organisms are far too complicated to be explained by natural processes. Two wellcrafted precision watches found on two different beaches both need a designer. Yet secular scientists act as if the existence of complex micro-machines on a second planet somehow implies that the complex machines on the first planet didn’t need a designer! Obviously, such reasoning is nonsense. But of course, life has not been found on Mars - only indirect evidence for small amounts of liquid water on its surface. As one creation astronomer has noted, this story really is “much ado about very little.”

“Pinkwashing” has become a familiar ritual every October, from NFL football players donning pink gloves to gun shops selling pink guns, all in the name of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A sizable industry has cropped up around the cause of “awareness.” And police departments are taking pinkwashing to a new, sometimes tone-deaf level. Towns across America have decked out their police forces in pink for the month. Many police departments are sporting new pink patrol cars. As Fairfield, Connecticut police chief Gary MacNamara explained, “If we change the look of the police cruiser, maybe we’ll change the way we look at breast cancer and breast cancer survivors.” Some police departments are going even further in their commitment to awareness. Here are some of the more creative ways the criminal justice system has been dressed up to commemorate the cause: Pink handcuffs. Police in Greenfield, Massachusetts will observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pins that say “ARREST BREAST CANCER – UNLOCK THE CURE.” Some officers plan to go even further to spread awareness by using pink handcuffs to arrest people. pick n pay women’s walk 2015 Ladies from all walks of life put on their pink and did their bit for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the annual Pick n Pay Women’s Walk. On Saturday 03 October at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, women arrived in great numbers to take part in the fourth fun 5km walk in support of creating awareness around breast cancer. The emphasis of the annual walk is based on enjoyment of the event, as well as the experience of the sense of ubuntu which is achieved when the community comes together in the name of doing something meaningful for others. All proceeds of the walk go directly to breast cancer awareness organisation PinkDrive, which provides women around South Africa with breast cancer examinations and education. PinkDrive has a station at every walk where they offer free breast examinations, as well as the opportunity to talk to a representative about any breast-related matters.

Dutch Reformed Church AMENDS gay marriage rules Not long now! Justus Abrams

“During a sitting in Boksburg, the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) reached a compromise regarding the position of gays. As in the past, gays are welcome in the DRC; they now accept that a gay DRC member can be ordained as a minister, as long as they remain celibate; gay marriages are not an alternative to heterosexual marriages; the Christian and loving ministration to gay members is left to the discretion of local church councils. The decision introduces a level of flexibility to the position on which the majority was utterly immovable before.” (As reported by Beeld and SABC) Aforementioned was a decision taken by the DRC on Thursday 7 June 2007. Amendments were made to this decision in 2011 and again in 2013. Last Friday 9 October, the Synod of the DRC took another decision on the matter that they will recognise civil unions between same-sex couples. In a communiqué by the Synod, they said that the church still regards marriage as a union between a man and a woman,

but will henceforth a l s o recognise civil unions between same-sex couples and grant such couples similar privileges as members as those of heterosexual couples. The decision further states that any minister of any congregation who sees fit to do so can oversee and affirm any union between any same-sex couple. The decision, however, the statement reads, is not binding on any congregation and the freedom to choose whether to follow this decision or not is left up to the committees of the individual congregations. The tame TIMES will in future issue reports on the decisions of local churches and congregation members on this matter, but comments on Facebook would suggest that there are those who oppose the decision and feel that the Christian Bible is the only guide churches can follow on this matter and the decision of the Synod is not in line with the Bible.

9 Days left TRIPLE TITLE Fight Excitement at EFC 44
By Bianca Maré On Saturday 3 October EFC hosted yet another nail-biting, knuckle-busting event that kept all the fans on the edges of their seats at the Carnival City Big Top Arena. The atmosphere was electric as the capacity crowd cheered on their favourite fighters during what was to become an unpredictable night of fights. The main card bouts, which are broadcast live across the globe, saw SA’s beloved Danella Eliasov, fighting out of Tapout Academy in Johannesburg, take on Italian Micol Di Segni, an amateur world champion fighting out of Hung Mun MMA Studio in Italy. This was the only female fight of the evening, but make no mistake; there was no shortage of action. The first round saw a tentative Eliasov, spurred on by her corner; attempt to probe for a KO by way of a striking competition. She was unsuccessful as she met with a confident Di Segni who was up to the challenge. The match quickly turned into a grappling competition as both athletes sought a victory by way of submission. Neither was successful in this regard and the latter rounds saw both fighters, now tired, attempt to KO each other. The match went the full three rounds and the decision was left to the judges who scored the fight in favour of Di Segni. Next up was the first title match of the evening. SA’s Boyd Allen, the current Featherweight Champion, fighting out of Fight Fit Militia in JHB, faced challenger Danny Henry, fighting out of Higher Level Martial Arts in Scotland. The match began with a confident Allen landing several blows on the face of Henry, to the joy of the crowd, which screamed and cheered in support of the South African. The second round saw a more determined Henry begin to test the grappling skills of the champion, with Allen dominating on the ground. However, in the third round Henry was able to get the better of Allen, who gave up control of his back, and this saw Henry rain down a barrage of punches on Allen, who had no reply and the referee had no option but to stop the fight, declaring the Scotsman the winner by TKO, to the dismay of the supporters. Featherweight champion, was able to redeem some pride for the Scottish, who had just lost to the Springboks. The Lightweight Title match saw the champion, Leon Mynhardt, fighting out of Team CIT MMA in PTA, face off against Themba Gorimbo of Fight Fit Militia in JHB, in what was seen as a grudge match between both camps. Both fighters were impressively fit and this was testament to the amount of training that went into the bout. The exciting first round saw a focussed Mynhardt go strike for strike with a confident and determined Gorimbo, who managed to shake the champ with a few good blows. A quick regroup and a few words of wisdom
from their respective corners saw both fighters come out with guns blazing in the second round. The match could have gone either way but it was Mynhardt’s experience which saw him successfully lock in a guillotine choke, causing Gorimbo to tap out. The main event of the evening was the Heavyweight bout between the current champion, Andrew Van Zyl of B&J MMA in JHB and the menacing Frenchman, Cyril Asker of Bushido Academie in France. Van Zyl had hoped for a striking match as he felt this was his best chance at defending his title; however, the Frenchman had other plans. Asker, well-known for his victory over former heavyweight champion Ruan Potts, was determined to dismantle the only thing
standing in his way of getting EFC gold, the current champion. They traded blow for blow during the opening of the first round, but as soon as opportunity came knocking, Asker took full advantage. He quickly displayed the grappling skills that enabled him to withstand the ground and pound of Potts and went on to win the match by way of submission by a guillotine choke, causing Van Zyl to tap out and declaring Asker the new Heavyweight champion. Fans were stunned and Van Zyl was visibly distraught as he hung his head in disbelief. The fight was somewhat anti-climatic as fans had expected a five-round duel, only to have Van Zyl tap out in the first.
