Letter by Neville Peters I wish to express my utter disappointment and disgust regarding the cessation of publication of the DStv Premium magazine Dish without any notification from MultiChoice. I am sure that many of the DStv viewers will share my sentiments on this matter! Now we have to flip through the 41 channels on the screen – do you realise how long that will take? To select a programme and channel! Whereas with the magazine it possibly took only a maximum of 20 to 30 minutes! MultiChoice increases its annual fees without hesitation every year, yet they cannot publish a magazine to satisfy the viewers – and then have repeat after repeat of the

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:
Hi Neville, when I moved into my own apartment I decided that I wouldn’t pay for DStv due to its very high subscription fees. Instead I’m paying for cheaper uncapped internet and watch whatever I want to. I know that you sent your grievances to MultiChoice and I hope that you receive positive feedback.

Letter by Norma Rudham Hi Candace, I’m sending this letter in response to the letter that featured in week 39 detailing customer’s dislikes, one of which was the unnecessarily large sizes of cereal boxes. I have just bought a box of Kellogg’s Hi Fibre Bran cereal which states on the box that it contains the same amount of cereal but the box size is different. I do not normally buy this brand of cereal so I was not able to compare sizes but this statement on the box indicates that the box is a smaller size than previously.
Maybe the manufacturers are starting to listen at last.
EDITOR’S RESPONSE:
Hi Norma, I think it’s important for consumers to question and be critical when it comes to the products that they are purchasing. I remember writing an investigative piece on bread producers who were cheating consumers with underweight bread. It was quite alarming how many bakeries were producing underweight bread.
THANK YOU
SOUTH PLUMBING
Letter by Jerry Theys Dear Candace, we are receiving our tame TIMES regularly at Reuven Old Age Home and the people look forward to it. Thanks to the distributors for being regular – they must keep it up. All the best to you, Candace, keep up with the good work. We love reading the tame TIMES.
Letter by Neville Peters Hi Candace, on Tuesday 13 October I experienced a water leak in my ceiling at about 03:30pm. I phoned South Plumbing and within 30 minutes they arrived and diagnosed a burst geyser. Within 48 hours the geyser was replaced and functional. I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to Rina, Devon, and his assistant Edward for their wonderful service.
EDITOR’S RESPONSE:
Hi Jerry, I’m glad that you and your fellow neighbours at Reuven are enjoying the newspaper.

No take-away
With Halloween only a few days away, I’m gearing up for one scary house party – I’ve hijacked my folk’s place to throw one big spooky bash with close friends. I remember when I was kid, Halloween wasn’t really a thing in South Africa. The fact that a friend and I were the only two souls trick-ortreating in our street one year and only received a mini Pringles tube to share was a dead giveaway that we were watching too much American television. But now many more South Africans are donning broomsticks and fake vampire teeth in celebration of this fun, and widely misunderstood, celmarks the ebration. Also known as All Hallows’ Eve, the day eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day, which pays homage to the dead, including saints and faithful departed believers. Over the past weekend I covered the annual JhbSouth.co.za Family Festival and Expo at Rietvlei. While I got an awkward tan, I really enjoyed being outdoors. Here’s me with Zak the Zoo Buddy. See page 3 for more on the festival.
EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Well done South Plumbing!

In partnership with tame TIMES, this family outdoor event was established in order to punt local businesses as well as to raise awareness about safety and crime prevention while providing the residents of the South with family fun and entertainment. Fast becoming a prestigious event in the South, the Mr & Miss JHB South Beauty Pageant was one of the many highlights of the festival. Apart from the live entertainment, including DJs, dancers as well as safety and crime prevention demonstrations by SAPS, the festival also featured a CPF 5km fun walk / run fundraiser, strongman competition, kids activities, motor expo, a craft market, as well as music from seven-piece band Ruby Tuesday. HAVE YOU SEEN THE TAME TIMES POP UP STORE?
Mall at Newmarket officially open Mall at Newmarket officially opened its doors on 22 October, and what an amazing place and experience it turned out to be! It has an unique interior with the character of the racing culture preserved throughout. The Mall features a horse-themed play area located near the entrance. The food court is massive, anchored by various wellknown brands, and a ‘’once-in-a-lifetime’’ kiddies play area. The mall is anchored by Checkers Hyper, Builders Warehouse, Food Lover’s Market, and Virgin Active, to name but a few. Shoppers started queuing outside Checkers from before 07:00 on the opening
day, and continued to do so throughout the weekend. Food Lover’s Market will be opening on 5 November, and it is anticipated that this popular store will be just as well frequented. Many of our readers have expressed their excitement at seeing Nedbank, Absa and FNB branches at the Mall. The opening day was attended by many prominent figures from our community who were there to congratulate the Moolman Group, Rejem Property Development and Nedbank on an exciting new development, which already has further expansions on the horizon.
The security was - and still is - extremely tight, with a large number of members of the National Police Force, and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police, both in uniform and in private clothing, on duty. The Special Operations Force (SOG) is providing private security services - with uniformed personnel, as well as a substantial number in private clothing. tame TIMES is proud to be associated with Mall at Newmarket. We are manning a pop-up cubicle in the mall, where we can meet you, chat to you, hear your views and interact on a daily basis. Please drop in.

All you need to do is collect your free Where’s Seabiscuit bumper sticker from the tame TIMES office at 91 Michelle Avenue in Randhart, or from our pop-up store in Mall at Newmarket and pop it on your car bumper/rear window. Exchange your details with us on our competition
page at www.tametimes.co.za and if you are spotted driving around with such a sticker on your car you may just be one of the lucky winners. The stickers will also be available at various schools in our catchment area where entry forms can be collected. For further competition details contact tame TIMES on 011 862 8500 or visit www.tametimes. co.za.
Goldrush Bingo races to the Mall at Newmarket
South Africa’s biggest Bingo operator, Goldrush, is soon to re-locate its current Bingo operation in Alberton to the Mall at Newmarket. This exciting new venue will feature a wide variety of electronic bingo games, a separate traditional bingo lounge and an upmarket licensed restaurant called “49’ers café bar and diner,” aptly named after the ‘gold-seekers’ during the 1849 Goldrush in America. The electronic bingo terminals provide a range of progressive jackpots and the design of Goldrush Newmarket will allow for patrons to enter via two entrances, either directly into the restaurant or into the bingo area where a welcome desk is conveniently located. Besides the sleek finishes, large screens will provide sporting action and more.
The Goldrush Group employs over 1000 employees and operates thirteen branches in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and Eastern Cape. The restaurant will open on 22 October and the bingo area will open in early November, once the Gauteng Gambling Board have granted their final approval. To add to the excitement of this new branch opening, a car will be given away in early December. The Goldrush group has, and will remain, a supporter and contributor to the National Responsible Gambling Programme. The Bingo area will be strictly controlled and will only be open to patrons who are 18 years and over. A zero tolerance policy will be strictly applied to underage gambling and the over-consumption of liquor.

R40 000 stolen copper seized
Stormwater drain fixed at Maranatha Village Executive members of the DA Ward 56 Boroang Branch recently visited the Maranatha Village townhouse complex which has been experiencing problems with the stormwater drain which runs underneath the complex. The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) finally fixed the storm water problem after many years of complaints from the residents. One local resident said, “It took nearly five years of complaining to have this problem seen to, but at least they have fixed it now!” Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane said, “I am relieved that JRA has finally acted on this problem! It has cost them R3.4-million to fix and let’s hope that this stormwater drain gets well maintained in the future so that we don’t
have future problems arising from it.” DA Boroang Branch Secretary Michael Crichton said that he felt that it was good that the residents’ needs had finally been seen to. However, the residents also raised concerns that there had been a few break-ins as a result of people accessing the complex from the koppies. “Now that the stormwater drain has been fixed we call on the South African Police Service to raid the koppies in order to help keep the residents safe,” said Crichton. DA Borang Branch Chairman Phillip Venter displayed concern that the park was damaged during this process. “We would like this park to be restored as soon as possible so that the children in this suburb can play in it again,” said Venter.

On Monday 19 October members from the Vispol Shifts were busy doing patrols in the Booysens reserve area when they were called back to Booysens Police Station. Upon arrival at the station, they were given information concerning a consultant from City Power who was following a person who was going to sell copper at a company in the Booysens area. The members contacted the consultant and offered their assistance. The consultant informed the members where he was and the members went to meet him. The
members, along with the consultant, followed the suspect and as soon as he showed his intentions of selling the copper, the members placed the suspect under arrest. The members also arrested the driver of the bakkie that was used to transport the copper. City Power Investigation Unit was also called and they confirmed that the copper belonged to them. The estimated value of the stolen copper stands at R40 000. The suspects were arrested and detained at Booysens SAPS for possession of stolen copper. Investigations are still ongoing.

Conservation shines at Diamond Route Conference
Conservationists, scientists, academics, students, activists and civil society gathered at De Beers’ corporate headquarters in Ormonde for the 6th Annual Diamond Route Research Conference to discuss biodiversity conservation, education and sustainability opportunities. Over two jam-packed days from 20 – 21 October, the conference informed and intrigued
delegates with a wonderful array of topics, ranging from several of southern Africa’s most elusive species: from the secretive Blackfooted Cat, the critically endangered Wattled Crane to the fascinating southern African hedgehog and majestic leopard. The spotlight was also focussed on water quality; vegetation monitoring; species and ecosystem conservation; the threat to bee pollinators and thus food security; as well as
archaeology and heritage. Several prominent figures in the field presented at the conference, including world renowned small mammal expert Professor Ara Monadjem from the University of Swaziland and well-known conservationist Dr John Ledger. Nicky Oppenheimer, a founding member of the Diamond Route, as well as De Beers Consolidated Mines CEO and Chair of the
Diamond Route Trustees, Phillip Barton, were also present. The Diamond Route Research Conference was established to create a platform to highlight some of the many research projects undertaken on the Diamond Route and other conservation properties owned by De Beers, Debswana and E Oppenheimer & Son in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana.
Mondeor SAPS reports that for the week 15 – 21 October, 67 suspects were arrested for various offences. 30 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence, 10 for shoplifting, and the remaining suspects were arrested for committing crimes ranging from possession of drugs, fraud, assault grievous bodily harm, theft, robbery with a firearm, dealing in drugs, and malicious damage to property. On Tuesday 06 October, 30-year-old suspect Nhlanhla Phaswa was convicted to eight years direct imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for a house-breaking and theft case which occurred in Villa Palamos complex, Letitia Road, Ridgeway on Thursday 20 November 2014. The suspect was apprehended by Sector 2 CPF patrollers as well as ADT Security when they received an alert that the suspect was inside the complainant’s property. The case was assigned to Constable Gugu Thwala of Mondeor Detectives Services for further investigation. The Detective Branch Commander Lieutenant Colonel Haasbroek would like to commend the investigating officer for her efforts throughout the investigation. The purpose of the event was to assist clients and the community who live with the stigma associated with mental health conditions to understand that their diagnoses can prove to be a motivation for success, rather than a stumbling block to progress.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY The other morning, as I was stirring from my slumbers to the early morning chirruping of birds, my wife leaned over and casually remarked, “Happy anniversary dear.” Whoops – I was caught completely off guard, and stunned that I had forgotten our wedding anniversary. Nevertheless I rallied to the occasion, jumped out of bed with a, “I’ll bring you some tea my love,” and strode off to the study to remedy the situation. I knew we had some old greetings cards left over from various occasions and found just what I was looking for. ‘To my wife’ pronounced the outside of a large romantic card covered in red roses; and on the inside I crossed out the word “Valentine’s” and replaced it with the words “Wedding Anniversary,” added “43” and so the amended card now read: “Happy 43rd Anniversary To My Love.” You would have thought that my quick

to the Maldives (It was worth it). Our 30th was spent reminiscing at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh where we had honeymooned; and on our 35th it was a dinner cruise in Cairns, Australia. I can’t remember what we did on our 40th, but last year we spent our 42nd at Montecasino, where we enjoyed a full day’s outing at the bird park, a movie, dinner and a show. So it’s a little puzzling, to say the least, how I managed to forget such an auspicious occasion and can only blame a string of recent busy social events that had deviated
me off course. As it so happened, we were going away in three days’ time and were entertaining our grandson from Australia and then had the busy planning of a self-catering trip to Graskop and Pretoriuskop in the Kruger Park to organise with my daughter and sonin-law and their three children. So perhaps I was a little self-absorbed and distracted with shopping, servicing the car, paying bills and attending to the functions of the house and garden. With all the automated diary and memory reminders you get on computers and cellphones these days, I would do well to start planning and plotting for our 44th anniversary well in advance, so as to avoid a recurrence of this marital calamity. Heaven help me if I forget two years in a row!
copy of their pensioner specials leaflet from the information counter. Each day of the week offers an assortment of discounts at the numerous shops and restaurants inside the mall and on Pensioner’s Mondays the parking is free. After the seminar we met up with our family and grandchildren and did a bit of windowshopping and browsing around. Why do the stores seem so much more interesting in a new setting? There are several restaurants to choose from and there is also a food court, but we chose to enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Ocean Basket. Afterwards, to complete the outing for the grandkids, we spoilt them a little more and took them to the movies. Subsequent to our visit, an IMAX cinema has now recently opened. For some reason - I’m not quite sure why a lot of our activities recently have been out on the West Rand. To recap, we enjoyed a day trip and picnic at the Walter Sisulu Gardens on a public holiday (Tuesdays are free for pensioners). Then there was this outing to Cradlestone Mall and more recently we attended the Kyknet Sing in Harmonie School Choir Competition at the Silverstar Casino and Resort, which coincidentally, is
not very far from the mall and was a first-time visit as well. Our granddaughter sings for her school Orion Laerskool and the school choirs and entertainers were of a high standard and the late afternoon event went on long into the evening and was most entertaining. At Silverstar there is a good variety of eatingout options and many activities for the kids (and adults) to participate in, but we only had time for lunch so we couldn’t get sidetracked by the other activities on offer – which was probably just as well to avoid the extra strain on the wallet. Having punted the attractions of the West Rand, I must include one new restaurant we recently discovered, which is found out in the North. Between Honeydew and The Dome there is a little complex called Stepping Stones where a lovely little restaurant can be found – Olive ‘n Twist. It is in a garden setting, so you may sit outside on benches under the trees, or (the option we chose) under shade up on the deck with table and chairs. We joined my brother and sister-in-law for lunch and a few craft beers and ciders. We all chose the steak, egg, chips and salad for R69 and enjoyed coffees
afterwards. Good value food in a pleasant, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere and best news of all – there is a 25% pensioner discount from Mondays to Thursdays. So well worth the extra travel time and a new eating-out experience. Till the next time. Pensioner Power.

thinking would have saved the day, but alas it was not to be. I was in the proverbial dog box. Nevertheless by lunchtime my wife was talking to me again over lattes and toasted sarmies at the Mugg & Bean. It’s not like me to forget our anniversary but I guess there is a first time for everything. I guess memory lapses happen to the best of us – senior citizens or not. On previous celebrations we had enjoyed wonderful weekends and holiday trips away over our anniversary period. For our 25th anniversary we had an exotic and expensive 10-day trip
AROUND AND ABOUT – GO WEST YOUNG MAN...
In our search for the best pensioner discounts and bargains, our travels often take us all over the greater Johannesburg area. In truth, sometimes it’s an excuse to get out of the house, shake off the cobwebs, experience a little drive and visit interesting new pastures. Such was the case when we recently discovered a lovely new shopping mall way out on the West Rand near Muldersdrift. It’s quite a long way to drive from our home in the South, but our trip to the upmarket shopping complex Cradlestone Mall turned into a most pleasant and enjoyable day’s outing. On a cool highveld Saturday morning on 27 June we attended a birding seminar sponsored jointly by Country Life magazine and Cradlestone Mall in conjunction with BirdLife South Africa. The topic was ‘Conserving South Africa’s Birds: Successes and Challenges,’ and we were so impressed and enjoyed the presentation so much we later joined BirdLife and took out annual membership, which costs R310 per couple, for pensioners. At this friendly function, I had the opportunity of chatting to the public relations manager of the mall and she ran off and brought me a

In desperation, a number of pensioners at the Reuven Old Age Home joined forces to clear the sewer system of blocked waste matter that was gushing through the inlets of the resident’s baths, basins, sinks and toilets. Not only was the smell offensive, it was also unhygienic, germinfested and a health hazard to the residents living on the ground level. After calling various departments and not getting any response, a concerned resident called ANC member Bev Turk, who is assigned to visit all the old age homes in the South, to compile a list of all the grievances and complaints from the elderly and submit this to the relevant authorities. Turk, who realised the urgency of the matter, immediately contacted various stakeholders, including the Mayor. Workmen from
Johannesburg Water Board were dispatched to inspect the complaint. They told the residents that they do not dig holes to get to the sewer pipes but promised to send workmen to attend to the problem – two days later no workmen turned out. The residents realised that this will be a lengthy procedure and decided to take matters into their own hands. They borrowed plumbing tools to clear the blockage. It took about two hours, but with determination and hard work they eventually cleared the blockage and the sewerage system was restored to normal. Turk was highly praised for all her concern and efforts to ensure that the problem be solved. “She communicated with us all the time and continually assured us that that she will not give up until the blockage in the sewerage pipes is repaired,” said one relieved resident.
Dear Gary, we love your page for the elderly; at least we can now look forward to reading about matters concerning us. Thanks for taking the time and effort to reach out to us. I live in one of the retirement villages in the South and there is a variety of elderly people who live different lifestyles. Some are fortunate enough to have children and grandchildren who love and care for them; with others it seems their families just dumped them at the village, because they never make any effort to visit them. Some of them manage to go on with their lives, while others feel deserted and neglected, believing that their children and families have forsaken them. They refuse to participate in anything constructive. Your recent article ‘10 pointers on how to stay young’ is excellent; the elderly should read it daily, until it becomes part of their day-to-day lifestyle. Keep up the good work!

SPORT HIGHLIGHT The All Blacks went through to the Rugby World Cup Final after winning South Africa in an intense match with a score of 2018. (Source: www. netwerk24.com)
EDUCATORS MAKE THE RIGHT MOVE In collaboration with Tsogo Sun Gold Reef City, Tsogo Sun Moves For Life (TSMFL) held the 2015 TSMFL Soweto/Mayfair Teacher Awards on Wednesday 21 October at Gold Reef City. Foundation phase educators from various TSMFL schools were in attendance. TJ Malamule from TJ Talk International once again delivered an entertaining and powerful message of taking control of your choices and decisions, both in your personal and professional life. Following this inspirational message, the Teacher’s Tournament commenced with great enthusiasm from the educators. Many competitive streaks were revealed during the course of the events, and the respective school teams were excited to show off their chess knowledge. After announcing the winners of the tournament, MC Malusi Lekalakala presented a MiniChess Level 1 Teacher Certificate to those teachers who completed their MiniChess Level 1 training. Natasha Bezuidenhout from Tsogo Sun Gold Reef City was presented with a framed collage by TSMFL learners as a token of thanks for its sponsorship of the TSMFL project in the Soweto and Mayfair areas.

LIONS MAUL THEIR WAY TO
THE TOP
Monica Supra
monica.supra@tametimes.co.za The Golden Lions successfully defended their den and was crowned as the 2015 Currie Cup champions after defeating the Western Province on Saturday 24 October. The Lions had the home ground advantage at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) and it showed early in the match with a halftime score of 22-10. This was certainly not the only reason for the Lions’ final victory of the season, for they had won all 12 of their matches throughout
the season, claiming the coveted Currie Cup with a winning score of 32-24. No other team could stop coach Johan Ackerman’s squad from claiming their 11th Currie Cup title in the history of the Golden Lions. They also became the first team since 1996 to go unbeaten in a season, which made them the favourites upon entering the ultimate test after a fantastic 2015 season. Although the Western Province remains the most successful Currie Cup side in history with 33 titles, after such a dominant campaign, it can be assumed that the Lions will be the favourites to win the 2016 Currie Cup as well.
