Preying on school learners

SCARE TACTICS: The three suspects that were arrested for stealing cell phones from school learners. The first two were caught in Winchester Hills and the third was the one who pounced in Voster Avenue. Last week two separate incidents of thieves pouncing on school learners occurred in the Mondeor policing area. Fortunately the Randeor School and Abbotts College learners were not harmed by the petty thieves and the suspects in both incidents were arrested. The first incident took place on 22 January in Voster Avenue, Glenanda when three learners from Abbotts College were walking home from school. A male suspect approached them and demanded their cell phones, threatening to stab them. According to Kayde Francey of D&D Tactical

Security the one girl learner managed to hide her phone and posted what was happening on the Glenanda CPF chat group. Francey as well as Glenvista, Mulbarton and Glenanda CPF patrollers responded immediately. The suspect ran towards the N12 highway but was eventually caught. The stolen cell phones were retrieved and the learners positively identified the suspect. However no knife was found on him. “The 25-year-old suspect was arrested for common robbery and appeared in court last Thursday,” Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson confirmed. The second incident occurred in the early

morning of 23 January in Seder Street, Winchester Hills. Learners from Randeor School ran to the Shell garage seeking refuge from two suspects armed with knives. The same modis operandi was used where the suspects threatened to stab them if they didn’t give their cell phones to them. A petrol attendant was quick to respond by pressing the panic button. Hercules Alarms responded and was given a description of the suspects. Hercules officers gave chase and nabbed the two suspects behind the garage. Both were armed with a knife. Cst Mnguni said that the two suspects, aged

18 and 20 years of age, were arrested for possession of dangerous weapons and possession of stolen property. Cst Mnguni requests that all learners who walk home from school must please not parade their cell phones. She adds that even if your cell phone is hidden in your pocket, wearing ear phones is like an invitation to criminals to prey on you to steal what you are listening to you. Well done to D&D Tactical Security and Hercules Alarms and the CPFs involved in the successful arrests. Your hard work in protecting the community does not go unnoticed.
