We are extremely proud of them; each and every one has grown into a confident and mature young lady. We wish them the absolute best year – the jewel in their crowns.” According to Robertson, many of the parents had been asking, since the opening of the girls’ school, whether there would be a school for boys. “When my husband (Derrick) and I had our own son, it was something we could personally start envisioning. We always ask the question ‘What would be best for our own child?’ during the development process, so now the boys’ school is a reality for us.” St Declan’s is in the process of being built and they are already open to Grade R boys. In January 2015, grades 1-6 will be available. All academics and general school-running practices will be on different campuses. “We have an incredible principal lined up for St Declan’s who is itching to get started. The two schools will interact for some extramurals, and of course for major school events such as school plays, fundraisers, matric farewells and the like. The focus will always be on monastic schooling, as we believe the best academic results are achieved this way,” Robertson said. The major ground works for the athletics field was completed last week, and the installation of irrigation and 12000 square metres of grass will start from next week. Wearing your heart on a badge

what we’re waiting for, senor?

BADGE PROUD: Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve, wear it on a badge. Non-profit children’s organisation Cotlands kicks off its heartfelt campaign in the month of love – February. This new campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of emotional development in a child’s life, and how play helps to build the bond between parent/caregiver and child. Cotlands has created five unique badges that are fun and stylish to wear. Each badge sells for R5. All proceeds go to Cotlands, which provides early childhood development in under-resourced communities. “We hope that through this campaign we raise awareness for the importance of bonding between mother and child. We also aim to raise funds for our work with vulnerable children and their caregivers,” said

Cotlands CEO Jackie Schoeman. “This campaign is a wonderful way for us to share the love and spread the word that children need love to thrive in later life,” added Schoeman. The badges, that have the words: Play, Love, Laugh, Learn and Keep Calm, are a trendy way of publically displaying your support for children’s rights. Cotlands encourages schools and community groups to get behind the initiative and support children in need. To join the campaign you need to purchase your badge online. For purchases of R100 and over, delivery is free. To purchase a badge visit www.cotlands.org or contact Sharon Smith on 011 683 7201 sharon@cotlands.org.

I recently came across the song Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) by Bob Dylan. This song captivated me and I felt the words are exactly what I have been feeling in recent weeks. The first verse says, ‘Senor, senor, can you tell me where we’re heading? Lincoln Country Road or Armageddon? Seems like I have been down this way before, is there any truth in that, senor?’ The more I listened to the song and to the words closely, I started relating this song to God, like I was the voice of Bob Dylan asking these questions to God. Now don’t get me wrong, my faith in God is burning bright and He has been my Saviour in the past year and will always be. I know God has amazing plans for me and I am so expectant this year. It is like I can feel it in my bones that something great is going to happen this year but in this thing called life, obstacles get thrown in your destined path. This is where the devil attempts to stop or derail you from what God has planned for you. To me in verse 3 and 4 of this song, when Dylan speaks of ‘a wicked wind still blowing’ and ‘smell the tail of the dragon’, this is the devil causing havoc in my life. The line ‘I just gotta pick myself up off the floor’ is how I feel once satan has finished playing his mind games with me. Satan comes in many forms - beware he likes to disguise himself. However, there is optimism in the song. I know God equips his children to become what they meant to be and the first line of the second verse, ‘Senor, senor, do you know where she is hiding?’ is me asking God, can He please show me the Laurelle He has created me to be, because ‘I am ready when you are, senor’. What became even more interesting and made me think is that I am preparing to go into my first prayer and fasting weekend with my church. Fasting (concentrated prayer) - is to demonstrate to God that you are willing to scarifice your own desires in order to see His direction, help and strength. Then the penny dropped and I got very excited. I have all these questions for Senor (God) and now I get the chance to actively seek the answers from Him. Once again, I am expectant for Him to reveal why and what I am waiting for. God’s timing is perfect. And even though that wicked wind will still rise and try to knock me off my feet, God will make me keep it together. PS. Get to listening to Senor. @laurellewilliams laurelle@tametimes

Investing in education

PROUD SMILES: Kgomotso Mtwazi (Magaliesburg State Schoo) and Sifiso Mbele (Esokwazi Secondary School) received a bursary check on behalf of the Gauteng 2013 matric top achievers. MEC Barbara Creecy and Gauteng Premier Ms Nomvula Mokonyane awarding them with the bursary cheque. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has allocated over R200 million towards tertiary education for learners from no-fee paying schools. The GDE has awarded 1125 university bursaries and 1600 FET (Further Education and Training) bursaries to Gauteng’s matric 2013 top achievers from no-fee paying schools. The official award ceremony took place on 27 January at Turffontein Race Course. The aim of the Gauteng City Region

Academy (GCRA) bursary scheme is to ensure that financial constraints do not hold learners from disadvantaged communities or households back from acquiring tertiary education. The GDE is proud to announce that over the last four years, they have been able to award bursaries directly to no-fee paying schools. “If we want to break inequality, we must invest in our learners. Our responsibility does not end with grade 12,” said Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. The bursaries

will fund the student’s degree or diploma for the whole duration of the course. However, it is up to the learner not to drop out or fail. The reality is that the GCRA bursary scheme cannot fund everyone who has fared well in matric. Mokonyane therefore asks that each bursary recipient makes the most of the financial support they are getting, as there are many other learners who are also deserving. MEC Barbara Creecy and Premier Mokonyane call on the community, and especially the private sector, to invest in learners who are unable to enrol for tertiary education because of their financial situation. “If you assist someone, it will benefit South Africa immensely and change lives,” said Creecy. According to Mokonyane, the GDE has partnered with the private sector to finance deserving students, but she feels that the business sector could do more to invest in education. “The government cannot provide internships; this is where we need the private sector to come forward. We have a database of graduates who can fill their positions,” explained Creecy. Mokonyane emphasised that education is not merely a government issue, but a national and local community responsibility as well, “Ordinary citizens with the ability, put a child through university to give back for what you have received. It takes a village to raise a child.”

What to do with your rubble - legally In the event of a resident doing some small building job at home, one or two wheelbarrow loads of rubble can be disposed of at any one of the local garden refuse garden sites. Where a bakkie load or more needs to be disposed of - this can be done free of charge at the Robinson Landfill site (Turffontein and Marlborough Road, Stafford). There are two provisos; The rubble must be ‘clean’, ie the bricks, mortar and other hard material must not contain cement packets, ceiling boards, wood or plant material. The person seeking to dump the rubble must not be a contractor. Should any difficulty be experienced at the weighbridge, residents can call one of the officials at the site Desmond Mannes on 071 855 0916. In the event of a contractor wishing to dump rubble, s/he can still do so at no cost, but there is a requirement that they register the business. An account will be opened and all dumping will then be recorded. Why an account? Cash per load is no longer acceptable due to fraud that took place historically. Should readers have any question, especially about the Robinson Landfill site usage contact Clr Dennis Jane on dkjane@global.co.za or 083 701 8856.

Young boys paid to steal dogs for dog fighting Citizen journalist, Melody Donovan. writes: I was watering my garden one afternoon, around three, when I noticed a young child dragging a medium sized dog by his two front feet. The dog was panting furiously and was obviously very anxious. I was just about to call out to the boy through the gate when a young man in a Polo vehicle stopped and began speaking to him through the window. The man looked at me and so I asked him politely if I can help in any way. Turns out that the youngster, after being questioned by the man, who spoke his language, said that he was given the dog by a school friend and needed a lift to his home in Natalspruit with the dog. Both of us were immediately suspicious of the boy’s story because the dog had no lead or collar and was being taken against his will. It was not long and two older boys came walking down the road and the young boy quickly told the man that he was running away from them because they wanted to steal his dog for themselves. It took a lot of cajoling, both soft and harsh talk to get the truth out of these three youngsters and when a policeman joined in and took out arresting ties they opened up in total fear. The horror of the truth of this story is both shocking and astounding. The three boys had left Natalspruit after school with the definite intention of stealing a dog. Could be a young pit bull, staffie or

When it comes to heart attacks ‘forewarned is forearmed’ *Supplied by Netcare Union Hospital.

Every year thousands of South Africans fall victim to a heart attack – but what exactly is a heart attack, what are the symptoms and what should you do when one suddenly strikes? A heart attack happens when there is a narrowing of the heart arteries or a blood clot cuts off the flow of oxygenrich blood to the heart muscle.

Despite the high number of deaths caused by heart attacks, the good news is that if you act quickly enough at the first sign of a heart attack, you could save your life and limit damage to your heart. Heart attacks are generally caused by coronary heart disease (CHD), a condition where the coronary arteries (the major blood vessels that supply the heart with blood) become blocked with deposits of cholesterol, known as plaques. During a heart attack one of these plaques bursts, causing a blood clot to develop which then blocks the supply of blood running through the coronary artery, thereby triggering a heart attack. The first hour after the onset of a heart attack is called the ‘golden hour’, which is a critical time as the heart muscle starts to die within 80 to 90 minutes after it stops getting blood. It takes about six hours for the affected areas of the heart to have irreversible damage. Most deaths and cardiac arrests happen during this period. According to Dr Farouk Mamdoo, a cardiologist at Netcare Union Hospital, “Most people tend to ignore the symptoms of a heart attack until it is too late because of fear of embarrassment or a false belief that the problem is related to reflux.” However if the symptoms are correctly identified and appropriate medical care is received quickly within this period, near-complete recovery could be expected.

What symptoms should you watch out for? A heart attack often starts with mild symptoms that may not be particularly painful. Many people experience a tightness or squeezing sensation in the chest. It is important to get emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms for two minutes or more: •

Pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the centre of the chest.

Chest pain moving outwards to the neck, shoulder(s) or arm(s).

Severe pain, sudden weakness, dizziness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath.

Symptoms may vary from person to person and may even differ from men to women. Women don’t always get the same classic heart attack symptoms as men and many often mistake these symptoms for other health conditions. For example, some women experience pain in their arms, back, neck or jaw. They may also suffer from stomach pain and fatigue.

What can you do to prevent a heart attack? even a soft young pup of any breed, they were not fussy. What happens is that they apparently are paid sometimes up to R50 for a dog, and if it is a pit bull or staffie it is trained in a dog ring for fighting. Other pups are used as bait dogs to excite killer breeds. Horrible to hear this fact, but they take these stolen dogs, of which some are not fit for fighting, out of people’s gardens to their area. Too many of them are skinned alive and dripping blood and flesh and are thrown into a ring of two fighting dogs as bait. Apparently this action gives the fighter dogs more confidence to kill easily. I was so shocked I could no longer speak. Close to tears at the thought of what goes on in some communities and how easily R50 could be the prize money to encourage such criminal activity in youngsters. All the boys were younger than twelve and the one dragging the dog was around eight years old. The boys readily admitted all of this to us and said that it was usually easy to steal a young dog who would come to the gate to play with them, sometimes for a tennis ball. If the gate was still locked it was harder to get to the dog, but with three of them together it is worth trying if it meant getting paid money for the dog. The particular dog on that day was a young pit bull and friendly enough, and after they admitted the theft they showed the policeman the house where they had gotten the dog. The owner came down the road and reclaimed his pet. Dog theft is a terrible fact taking place every day in our society. Our expensive and beloved pets, which we are expecting to live with us for many years still, are stolen from our property and can end up in the most horrible of situations. The only thing I can urge each and every home owner is be on guard. It is happening all over and it is terrible, so do not let your young pups be too visible to the outside and especially when they are very young, or until they are old enough to guard the gate and bite if they have to.

“Smoking, eating a diet that is high in fat and cholesterol, not exercising as well as being overweight or obese all increase your chances of getting coronary heart disease or suffering a heart attack. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and making healthy choices you can decrease your chances of having a heart attack drastically,” says Dr Mamdoo. According to Resa van der Merwe, hospital general manager at Netcare Union Hospital, we all need to take responsibility for protecting our heart’s health. “Don’t wait for the consequences of your lifestyle choices to impact your health negatively. Start choosing the healthier lifestyle today,” she notes. “In the event of a heart attack be sure to keep three important points in mind. Recognise the symptoms of a heart attack, call for help immediately and get to the most appropriate hospital promptly,” encourages Van der Merwe.

Be prepared You should familiarise yourself with the hospitals in your area that have the most appropriate facilities to deal with heart attacks, or any other medical emergency for that matter. Seeking assistance at the most appropriate medical facility should result in early treatment, better outcomes, time saving, cost saving and above all, saving a life. You should also have emergency assist contact numbers readily available should a medical emergency occur. The recently launched, Netcare Assist app, which can be downloaded for free from Apple’s App Store South Africa, Blackberry App World (for devices older than Blackberry10 handsets) and the Android Market, also offers an invaluable lifeline for any person caught in an emergency situation. Netcare Union Hospital offers a range of cardiac services. The cardiothoracic unit at Netcare Union Hospital comprises of a 15-bed dedicated cardiac intensive care unit, two catheterisation laboratories, as well as a cardiac surgery department with a dedicated cardiac theatre. The unit offers the full spectrum of interventional cardiology, performed under the guidance of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists. These include coronary angiogram, coronary angioplasty, coronary stenting, 3D echocardiography, rotational arthectomy, intra-vascular ultrasound and transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI).

Open letter to JHB City Parks Mondeor resident writes:

Liewe land, my dogter sê nou die dag vir my die eienaardigste ding: “Ek gaan my seuntjie nie pak slae gee nie, ek gaan net vir hom sê - ‘Klasie, gaan ons woorde hê?’ met ‘n kwaai stemtoon, dan gaan ek hom só dissiplineer. Pak slae is wreed!” Pak slae is wreed?

Thank you for cutting our street Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor, two weeks ago. However, I have a concern. Please see attached photo and kindly reply to me as to why the contractor didn’t cut all the verges of the park? It really puzzles the residents as to why some verges were cut and some not, all in the same street? Is it also possible to ask the contractor to kindly clean the roads from weeds that are growing next to the verge on the road? Every resident has cleaned their roadside weeds, but City Park leaves all the weeds in

the road. Some of the grass and weeds that are growing on the road next to the verge is as long as 30cm. Why do the contactors not remove the weeds and long grass that grow in the road, next to the verge, at the same time when they cut the grass? It really gives a very bad impression of our area, which is the most visited area seeing that the Kliprivier Nature Reserve is here. All residents keep their verges clean and beautiful, but City Parks doesn’t seem to go the extra mile. This letter was sent to City Parks by the resident.

The difference between the two sides of work. How City Parks left the street.

Drug testing requested on parole check-ups A mother writes: My child has been released from prison at the end of last year, but is on parole for two years. He was arrested for theft. His stealing was to support his drug habit. I know he was in the wrong and do not support his actions. I desperately want him to stay on the right path. I asked the parole board to do drug tests on him, however they refuse saying it is not their problem. They come to the house twice a month to see if he is there, so why can they not just do a test? I told them I will supply the test if they can just administer it. With drug addicts it is so easy to go back to that - there must be a way to monitor or assist them when they’re released and check up if they are using drugs, or else it will just become a vicious cycle. tame TIMES have sent the Department of Correctional Services a request for comment and are waiting for their response.

Depression (3) For many years depression under children and adolescents was not recognised. This could be attributed to various factors, such as adults perceiving childhood to be a carefree and fun phase of life and therefore dismissing any symptoms of depression or misinterpreting symptoms of depression as expressions that is part of the current developmental stage of the adolescent. As recognition was eventually given to the fact that children, from babies right through to adolescents, did indeed experience depression, it was also recognised that the symptoms manifested differently, not only in comparison to adults, but also depending on the developmental stage the child was in. Please consult a psychlogist if you suspect your child suffers from depression. Jahwe Rapha Councelling centre can be contacted on 082 495 8401

Ai! Trixie Die Bondgenoot skryf:

Daar is ‘n leuse in die Grootboek wat sê, “Spare the rod and spoil the child!”

DIRECT FROM PARLIAMENT In an open democracy all have a right to political expression Earlier this month, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille announced that on 4 February (today) By Manny De Freitas she will lead six thousand DA supporters in a march to ANC headquarters, Luthuli House in Johannesburg. Zille explained in her announcement that each DA supporter that was marching would represent 1000 unemployed South Africans who will benefit from the six million real jobs that the DA will create if it is elected to national government. This march will expose the ANC’s manifesto, which promises six million “work opportunities”, as a hoax as they are not real jobs. Indeed they are temporary public works “piece meal” jobs that will do nothing to grow our economy and lift people out of poverty and thus reduce poverty in general. To make it worse, this is not the first time that President Zuma has tried to mislead South Africa when it comes to the perception of job creation. In 2009 when he was elected as President, he promised that his government would create five million new jobs. In reality, since then 1.4 million more jobs have actually been lost. Sadly, any economic advancement made by the Mandela and Mbeki administrations had been destroyed by the Zuma administration. The ANC’s reaction to the news of the DA march was most concerning. The ANC, through their spokesman Jackson Mthembu, described this perfectly legitimate and peaceful political demonstration as “extreme provocation to the ANC”. In his statement, he referred to the DA march in May 2012 to Cosatu House in Braamfontein. A number of people were injured and one person even died due to injuries incurred as a result of attacks by members of Cosatu at that march. The ANC said that a political party marching to another’s headquarters is a “recipe for disaster”. It is clear that the ANC does not like anyone, particular another political party, to publicly challenge it. It simply acts as a big bully. The ANC Youth League backed up the ANC by unashamedly calling for violent action against DA members. This is clear incitement of violence. We are seeing more and more political intolerance and this is most concerning, particularly for a country with one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. The incitement from the ANC and their Youth League cannot go unchallenged! As a result, DA Gauteng Leader, John Moodey has laid charges with the SAPS. If our democracy is to grow and flourish then there must be space for legal, legitimate and peaceful political activities. From the DA’s side it gave a guarantee that the march will be peaceful. From the ANC’s side it has made it clear that it won’t make such a guarantee. It is clear that the ANC no longer cares about our democracy and protecting it. It is only concerned with those in the inner circle of the ANC. Everyone else, like you and I, are simply irrelevant.

CANSA to host its 11th Shavathon CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Governor, Manny de Freitas said that it feels almost unbelievable that the CANSA Shavathon is now 10 years old and that 2014 is the 11th National CANSA Shavathon. “Hundreds of thousands of South Africans of all walks of life have shown their solidarity with cancer survivors at the past annual Shavathons when they have either shaved or sprayed their hair,” de Freitas said “CANSA plans on making this year’s Shavathon the biggest yet.” As it has been done in previous years, corporates, schools and organisations will have the opportunity to host their own Shavathon between 24-28 February. Official CANSA Shavathon events will take place at shopping centres across the country on, 1 March, where the cost to shave or spray (which is easily washed off) your hair or donate a ponytail is R50 for adults, and R25 for children under 12 years of age. By shaving or spraying your hair, it is a visual sign of solidarity with those who have undergone and are undergoing cancer therapy when they loose their hair. In addition to the options of shaving or spraying their hair, people also have the opportunity to purchase a CANSA Wrap for their hair (at a cost of R50) and to also donate their ponytail at CANSA Shavathon’s across the country. Ponytail donations received by CANSA are handmade into wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair as a result of their cancer treatment. Great pride is taken in making the wigs, to ensure the wig is as close to a natural look as possible. Wigs are available at all CANSA Care Centres and provided at no cost to the public. To donate a ponytail, hair must be at least 22cm in length, and must be clean and dry. De Freitas said that all funds raised go to the important programmes that CANSA runs in the fight against cancer.

Mamphela: in out in OUT Time for change: SA Citizen journalist, Melody Donovan, writes: The other night I took out my party paraphernalia, whistles, balloons and party blowers. What was there to celebrate on an ordinary Wednesday night? A news broadcast. Doctor Mamphele Ramphele announced she was joining up with the DA party in its presidential council and something in me was ecstatic. I listened carefully to her speech and as she spoke I could hear nothing she said was laced with a bunch of false promises. Her words clearly showed that the woman was wise and mature, that she was from the same heart as our late and great Mr Nelson Mandela. It was so obvious to me that what she was saying was first and foremost intelligent and she knew that the folk of our land had become unhappy, downtrodden and tense with the way things had been run. For me, a mature South African that lived through the apartheid era and the changes from 1994, it was elation; at last things would become great for all the people of SA. All through the sixties and seventies I had watched the horrors connected to apartheid mannerisms and as a young adult been subjected to government suppression, who then behaved, privileges or not, like domineering and controlling parents who were superior to every man in the street. It was church on Sundays irrespective of who you were, shops closed, movies all censored and you could certainly not have a marriage, relationship or even a friendship with a person of another colour; and all of this above, to me, felt like someone was the boss and watching my every move. No wonder so many of us then were rebels. One could say that I was an activist of sorts back then and a supporter of the ANC party and its desires. The facts to me were that the ANC were after freedom and fairness and I agreed with that idea, even as a young child. I personally, as a young woman, wanted ‘freedom’ for everyone in the land. Then it came in the form of Mr Mandela who fought for what was right, but it was short lived. Along came others to take over and if one looks today at the quality of life for most SA people it still has not really happened to the fullest. Yes all people are allowed to go anywhere they want to in the country, watch movies, eat at restaurants, travel on buses, use toilets, become famous; but how much freedom is in that when folk have stopped smiling and are tense and watchful and there is little to laugh about? Think about how much each and every one of us are badly affected by every rape, criminal acts, the sick and dying children in rural areas subjected to poor sanitation and inadequate water. The schools where the classroom is under a large tree and the toilet a hole in the ground. The disgusting condition of our government hospitals and clinics where people are lined up along the walls, sick and saddened by the fact that they will be there all day long and may even be turned away without help. The hopeful young mothers who are frightened by the constant diarrhoea her infant suffers, those holding a child who has pneumonia and who will be treated with medicine but have to return to the filth of squatter houses that the municipalities refuse to clean. This living experience is not life and certainly not freedom. It is fear, stress and suffering, which is all about suppression once again and is as unfair as ever. It is definitely time for change and people with great hearts and minds to join together and take a stand on behalf of the country’s people and put things right for all in one strong fighting party. We need Doctor Ramphele and others like her with the Mandela belief of a great South Africa, and we need to keep that legacy alive and thriving. I say let them come and stand firm. Give us back clean good hospitals that are well stocked and run. Give every one of our children a good education, encouragement and something to purpose towards. Encourage and grow our industry that no man sits on the pavement without work ever again, and there are skilled jobs and careers for all of our new matriculants. I am taking out my party paraphernalia in honour of Doctor Ramphele and the rest of the DA team and putting all my hopes on a change that will truly be great. Today more good news, others are seeing that the ANC needs strong opposition in a party who can and will take them on, and that the time for small parties scattered all over is way past and simply egotistical islands. It has been 20 years of waiting and waiting and the stress has gotten to us all. We are still a suppressed nation living in our land and it has to stop! The time for true freedom is right now.

What happens now? By Nieto Hernandez

INDECISION: Mamphela Ramphela and the DA’s political confusion ends in ultimatum. “I know Mamphela as a principled, fiercely determined person who loves her country deeply and devotes her life to the cause of making democracy work,” said DA leader Helen Zille during a media briefing on Tuesday 28 January. The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced that they had approached Dr Mamphela with an invitation to stand as the party’s presidential candidate during the 2014 elections. The AGANG leader accepted the invitation stating that both organisations were to put together their strengths and their reach to take full advantage of this historic moment. The move by the DA and AGANG comes at a critical point in South Africa while all parties prepare their election efforts. A couple of weeks back EFF leader Julius Malema and IFP leader

Mangosuthu Buthelezi smoked the proverbial peace-pipe in a move which resulted in the two leaders agreeing to allow campaigning in strongholds without any interferences. The marriage however failed to last a week due to much indecision mostly on the part of Mamphela and AGANG SA. Reports of a party ignorant about the a Tuesday announcement hit social media networks and news reports almost immediately after the announcement of the DA presidential candidate. As of Sunday 2 February, the miscommunication between the leaders had succeeded in causing futher confusion. The leaders who were singing each others praises began this week as estranged lovers, with Hellen stating that Mamphela cannot be trusted to see decisions to completion.

COPE welcomes the consolidation of opposition parties The President of Congress of the People (COPE), Mosiuoa Lekota, has welcomed the forthcoming merger of Agang SA and the Democratic Alliance. Lekota said that COPE has for some time advocated a closer working relationship between all opposition political parties. “Soon after the formation of COPE, we were right at the forefront of reorganising opposition politics to make sure that we do not work against each other, but rather with each other, especially on areas where there is clear agreement,” Lekota said. “We have recently taken this commitment a step further with the establishment of the Collective

for Democracy, where the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) agreed to co-operate on 20 areas where the parties have taken a similar position,” Lekota said. He added that COPE welcomes every move that strengthens the opposition and promises a change in government. As the late Nelson Mandela had envisaged, the realignment of South African politics has begun in earnest. “This development (merger) is good for South Africa, and will go a long way in promoting multi-party democracy with a robust opposition and change of ineffective government,” Lekota closed.

Agang SA members feeling betrayed, DA members feeling optimistic ahead of the elections, ANC insulting the ability of black people to make anti-ANC decisions without being coaxed, these are just a few happenings for the week. Happenings which leave one question on the lips of many South Africans; what happens to Agang SA now? Well, knowing a bit about the campaigning process I can guess a few possibilities likely to happen. Firstly, because Mamphele’s face will be next to the DA logo on our coming ballot, I think it’s safe to assume that Tannie Hellen and the campaigns team at the DA will be parading their new find all over the country. If this happens then I’m sure you would understand how Agang’s parades would be compromised, unless they also find themselves a new face to parade... I’m sure Lindiwe Mazibuko would appreciate the position. By the way, just as a side thought in the form of an open question: Dear Dr Mamphela, don’t we usually wait a little longer for the floor crossing antics? Back to the issue at hand - in the second scenario, Dr Mamphela gracefully gets off the fence she’s currently sitting on. A vocal advocate for morals and fairness, Mamphela must realize the depth of the situation her decision places on all the volunteers, leaders and followers of the brand ‘Agang SA’. These people, whom she fondly refers to as ‘citizens’ (reminds me of Lady Gaga and her ‘little monsters’), proudly wore the rainbow wheel because they believed in the ideals she presented and the hope she embodies. In my second scenario she does the noble thing, she steps down. This move may help the citizens rebuild, they already do not have enough time to salvage the already sinking boat. The next possibility, and by now I’m sure you realise the escalation of the drama, the citizens push Dr Mamphela off the fence. I must admit Agang is a unique party leadership problem. We all have come to know leadership issues are inevitable within new parties; EFF’s Malema vs Kunene, COPE’s Lekota vs Shilowa, and if anyone knows the name of Kunene’s new party kindly send it to me so I can also watch their looming squabble. Agang’s struggle though is a ‘Party vs Leader’ problem and my feeling is that if she won’t take the step, then the structures with in the fledgling party must expel her. In the last and most dramatic scenario, the volunteers, leaders, followers and Mamphela realise that Agang is not growing as quickly as it should be and call it a day. In my opinion, though harsh, this option actually makes real sense if you consider that some analysts have gone as far as calling Agang SA a stillborn. Folks, this is the excitement of pre-election party politics and the 2014 elections are already promising to be interesting. I was serious about King Kenny Kunene’s party, what is it called? Owens is a 32-year-old native from Pretoria. He grew up in a very small town called Eikenhof, but moved to the Jacaranda city during his school years. He calls himself a late bloomer, having not had any interest in anything to do with modelling or fashion. Mr SA, John Owens has some refreshing views and opinions and is not afraid to air them. He wastes no time in setting the record straight about the stereotypical image that a Mr SA title holder is nothing more than an attractive underwear model. Owens is far more interested in the corporate side of things than modelling and has worked at the same private property trust, which develops holiday resorts all over Africa, for the past 12 years. It’s apparent that John not only loves what he does, but is also very good at it. For the past eight years he has been nominated as one of the company’s top five salespersons in Africa. His secret to success? “I am a people’s person. That is probably why I enjoy doing what I do to such an extent.” John started his voyage to becoming Mr SA a few years ago when he got a great opportunity to do a shoot for PhD Underwear. John says he was ‘bullied’ into taking part in Mr SA, but in the end it completely changed his life as he saw the opportunities such a title could create for a person. Before John won the Mr SA competition, tame TIMES spent a day with him and the other contestants at Gold Reef City where John said that he believed that the winner of Mr SA should really use the brand to create awareness, about not only the competition but also important issues and challenges in life. Harris leads President to victory President High went north on 25 January to take on Midrand High cricket team. President’s first team won the toss and chose to bat first. Yasteel Dhanraj scored high with 44 runs and took the batting innings to 263 runs in a 40 over game, at more than a run a ball and only losing 9 wickets. The Midrand batting innings was decimated by President’s strong bowling attack and faltered to 63 all out, giving President a 200 run victory. Being at his best, Christopher Harris took 5 wickets for only 8 runs in 5 overs. Taking 5 wickets in a match is an amazing achievement, well done.

Why Foodimals are good for you

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouth-watering comedy left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood thought he saved the world when he destroyed his most infamous invention, a machine that turned water into food causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint soon learns that his invention survived and is now creating food animals – foodimals. Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world – again. The film opened in SA cinemas on 31 January. BANANOSTRICH Yellow banana with ostrich legs added. • Bananas help your heart. • Bananas help your muscles move well. • Bananas help your stomach feel better when it’s sick.

BARRY - The shy, young strawberry that befriends Flint and his friends upon their arrival on the transformed island of Swallow

Falls. He’s a sweet little guy! They’re an excellent source of vitamin C and just 100g has a whole day’s supply. • The small seeds embedded in their skin providea good source of dietary fibre • They’re also a good source of folate (one of the B vitamins) • Their natural sweetness comes from the sugars fructose and glucose. BLUEBERRY Barry’s smaller cousin. Blue and juicy! They provide you with some natural sugars for energy. The darker their colour, the sweeter they taste and the more of a treat they become. • They’re a good source of vitamin C • They provide dietary fibre, although they have less than blackberries. CARROT - Organic, orange, observant. Doesn’t have much to say. • They’re the reason why the whole family of brightly coloured compounds in foods were called carotenoids – they’re such a rich source, especially of beta carotene. Their bodies can convert beta carotene to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps with night vision - that’s why children are told to eat carrots so they will be able to see in the dark! • With many vegetables cooking destroys some of their vitamins, but you can absorb more beta carotene from cooked carrots than from raw ones. If you prefer to eat carrots raw, that’s fine because even one carrot has two day’s supply of beta carotene. Baby carrots have even higher levels.

They’re high in vitamin C, with 100g of kiwifruit having one and half times as much vitamin C as the same quantity of orange. • They’re also a good source of vitamin E. • You can’t see much fibre in their flesh, but their tiny black pips make them an excellent source of dietary fibre. SASQUASH - The legendary mountaindwelling creature created from…squash. • It is an excellent source of vitamin C • It has some dietary fibre and potassium. • Squash that is darker in colour supply some beta carotene. TOMATO - Is just a tomato. They’re the richest source of lycopene, a carotenoid that

scientists think could be important for the health of the prostate gland in men. The riper they are, the more lycopene they have. • They’re a good source of vitamin C (cherry tomatoes have even more vitamin C) and they supply some vitamin E, folate and dietary fibre. • Cherry tomatoes and those tomatoes that are deep red in colour are also a source of beta carotene. Karabo continues to change lives Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

The non-governmental organisation Karabo, situated in Brackenhurst, has offered support and assistance to many school children, teachers and parents over the years. They strive to create school environments where teachers and children feel supported, safe and happy and their new programme called Conscious Discipline enables them to do just that. The Conscious Discipline programme targets the education system at school and aims to create a positive climate that promotes optimal development of all children, staff and faculty. They use the method of brain stimulation exercises that teaches teachers how to understand and discipline children in a constructive way, and it develops the emotional intelligence of the child. The bigger purpose is to establish a positive connection between the teacher and the child, in order to create a safe learning environment where the child feels that he or she belongs somewhere- to the school family. According to Marjonneke de Bruyn, a play therapist at Karabo, this programme has been successfully implemented in the USA, where it originated and where a decline in bullying, drug abuse and suicide has also been attributed to this programme. Karabo is busy launching this programme in South Africa now and they have arranged to start workshops at Montanus Primary, South Hills

Primary and Alston Primary. Conscious Discipline also targets parents and teaches them in separate workshops how a child’s brain functions and how to discipline them in a constructive way, to ensure the optimal development of the child. They teach the parent how to deal with tantrums, for example, and where it comes from in order to solve the cause of the problem. Karabo uses practical and fun exercises, such as learning nursery rhymes, doing puppet shows and physical stretching and breathing exercises to teach the child assertiveness, self-control, how to process aggression, how to communicate their feelings in order to build self-worth and self-esteem. The child learns to self-regulate their behaviour and to connect with and care for others as a family. In addition, Karabo has trained community workers to offer counselling for vulnerable children who need to cope with loss. They have centres offering support for this in Katlehong, Thokoza and Eden Park as well. If you are interested in Conscious Discipline and would like to find out more about Karabo’s workshops or support groups, contact them on 079 322 7348 for more information. You can also help them change lives by making a donation to FNB, account number 62074012122, branch code 250942.

Frozen gem at Ster-Kinekor

Eastgate Ster-Kinekor is showing the treasure of animated 3D movies now - Frozen, The Musical. Extravagant care was taken with the miniature. The technical perfection is remarkable and the small details make it beautiful. Every scene is mindbogglingly exquisite. One of my favourite parts was the stunning ice palace and watching it materialize brought me back to my childhood with its belief and beauty of magic. The atmosphere, architecture and organic richness is fascinating. It almost felt like it was a real piece of history and is worth seeing in 3D.

Bryan Adams walks on the stage dressed in all black with a top hat and takes his place with his acoustic guitar. This is what fans experienced this on 25 and 26 January at the Big Top Arena at Carnival City. No fancy band or no show-stopping stage design, just Bryan Adams baring his musical soul and outstanding talent, occasionally accompanied by gifted pianist Gary Breit. And by all means this was more than enough, actually exceeding expectation. This Bare Bones Tour shows the Grammy Award winning musician is all natural talent. Protect your dog from Parvo Parvo virus is a painful and deadly disease for young dogs and can only be prevented by regular vaccinations. During December 2013 and January 2014, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s welfare hospital saw an unprecedented increase in cases of young dogs with Canine Parvo Virus (commonly misnamed ‘Cat Flu’). Puppies up to six months of age are especially prone to this disease. Parvo virus is a painful and deadly disease for young dogs and can only be prevented by regular vaccinations. “Dogs that catch this disease will die, if left untreated. Even with treatment, they often do. Most of the animals seen by the AACL’s hospital have had no vaccinations. A few had only received one vaccination, and no follow-up boosters,” Heather Cowie AACL’s Public Relations Officer said. Cowie added that after a puppy has been exposed to the virus, symptoms usually develop between 7 and 14 days later. Initially the puppy will not eat or drink and when it does, it will result in vomiting. The stools will change from watery to bloody, with a pungent odour. Dehydration quickly follows and then death. Prompt veterinary treatment is needed of intravenous fluids, supportive therapy including anti-nausea medication, antibiotics and other medications, depending on the status of the puppy. Canine Parvo Virus is a highly contagious

disease for dogs, and is easily spread by people through contact with vomitus and stools, but also bowls, bedding, clothes and other items which have come into contact with an animal with the virus. Due to the costly nature of treating puppies with Parvo, and the high/increased chance of them dying, euthanasia is often the kindest option to reduce their suffering. Once you have had an infected puppy, the virus will persist in the environment for years. Bleach diluted 1:30 can be used to disinfect the environment, including bowls, bedding and kennels. As a responsible pet owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that the day you get a new puppy, its first visit should be to the veterinarian for a health check and vaccination. Do not trust people who say ‘it’s had its shots’, if they cannot produce a vaccination certificate which has been signed by a veterinarian. Do not leave it until it’s too late. If you cannot afford the vaccinations, perhaps it would be better to find the puppy another home where it will receive the care it needs. For more information, please contact your regular veterinarian or AACL’s hospital on 011 435 0672 if you are an existing client.

Protect the wetlands World Wetlands Day was on 2 February. Harry the Hominid, Maropeng’s spokeshominid said, “Wetlands, which to us may look like nothing but breeding grounds for annoying insects, are actually something we should look after very carefully.” They are also known as swamps or marshes, wetlands play an important part in the way nature works and the community should actually treat them with a lot of respect. Here are some of the valuable things wetlands do: • Wetlands help remove excess nutrients which come from human activities, and turn them into food for plants and animals. • Some wetland plants absorb CO2, or carbon dioxide, from the atmosphere and store it, which helps control climate change. • Wetlands act like sponges, soaking up excess water and storing it for when the weather is dry so our rivers don’t flood or run dry. • The wetlands give us clean water. • The wetlands are filled with insect, bird and animal life that should be preserved.

Harry urges humans to not let any rubbish get into the water. “Help keep the water clean and pure so that creatures and plants will have a place to live. Then you can also enjoy it by fishing, swimming, sailing or bird watching in and around the wetlands - and keep doing so for years to come.” tame TIMES spoke to Andrew Barker, the Chairman of KlipSA (Klipriviersberg Sustainability Association). He explained there are many wtlands in the Klipriver running from Soweton all the way to the South of Johannesburg. There are streams that are running in Ridgeway, Mondeor. These streams orginate form the Klipriver. There is also one from Meredale through to Mulbarton. Barker added that the wetlands in Panorama that goes down to Aspen is a very important one. “ KlipSA is busy with a management plan to protect the wetlands in our area. We are in talks with local and provincial authoerities to formulate an intergrated plan for Klipriver to manage the quality and quanity of the water. This is critical as it runs in to the Vaal and we land up drinking this water.

SABC to give boxing adequate coverage Lebo Mosolodi

Boxing matches will be broadcasted on SABC channels as part of reviving boxing countrywide. *Photo taken from bleacherreport.com The South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC), Boxing South Africa (BSA) and the Department of Sport and Recreation finally reached an agreement that will get local boxing enough airplay on the television screen. The latest development is a result of resolutions taken at last year’s Boxing Indaba. Live boxing coverage had dried up on SABC screens since 2010. Well-decorated boxing trainer Nick “Mthakathi” Durandt once lashed out at the SABC, accusing the public broadcaster of killing the sport. The outspoken trainer/manager, who has

produced 30 world champions, said at that time that “the constant television blackout of live matches was to the detriment of boxing”. Acting SABC chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng said the move of broadcasting boxing matches on their television channels was motivated by the need for all parties to serve all South Africans accordingly. “We are at this stage working on a broader SABC strategy that includes bringing back live boxing on-air. As the public broadcaster, we are ready to showcase the South African boxing talent in the next fiscal year.” Speaking to tame TIMES, Boxing South

Africa spokesperson Loyiso Mtya said the recently signed boxing broadcasting deal is the best news heard within boxing circles in a long time. He said boxing fans initially thought that the sport is fading because of lack of exposure. “We have some of the best boxers in the country who are not known by fellow South Africans due to lack of publicity. Our boxers leave the country to compete internationally and come back victorious. However, fellow South Africans do not know anything about their great boxing achievements. Boxers such as Simphiwe Vityeka went to Australia and managed to gain two world titles. However, a large number of South Africans didn’t know much about his great boxing triumph,” said Mtya. The former WBO Pan African champion, Vusi Malinga from Katlehong said his last boxing fight that was broadcasted on SABC was in 2011 in Mafikeng. He was fighting for the IBF title against Michael Domingo from the Philippines. “One of the biggest boxing matches I have fought in 2012 was the IBF world title against Leo Santa Cruz in the United States of America. I was disappointed that it wasn’t broadcasted in any of the three SABC channels. Last year I also fought for the IBF world title against Stuart Hall in the United Kingdom. Again that big boxing match wasn’t broadcasted by any of our SABC channels,” concluded Malinga.

Maximise opportunity at FNB Varsity Cup The FNB Varsity Cup kicked-off yesterday 3 February and runs until 7 April. Matches will be broadcasted on Supersport 1. Days before the start of the 2014 FNB Varsity Cup, former Tuks player and Blue Bulls 2013 Currie Cup captain, Jono Ross, as well as former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar, encouraged young players to maximise this opportunity as it could be their key to professional stardom. Ross said, “South Africa is blessed with abundance of talent and the FNB Varsity Cup is an important platform to showcase one’s potential. Even though this remains a varsity competition, there is really high level of rugby and the teams and players, take the competition very seriously.” Ross’ words are echoed by former Springbok Captain Francois Pienaar, “The FNB Varsity Cup is such a valuable contribution to building a sustainable talent pipeline for our national and provincial teams.” “Ross’ rise to professional ranks is proof that the current formula of nurturing rugby talent is working. The fact that we MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITIES: Jono Ross who have a former varsity player seized his FNB Varsity Cup. captaining one of the top teams

in the country is testament to the success of talent development efforts,” Pienaar said. Reflecting on his first year of captaincy, Ross acknowledges that, “It was a massive honour and privilege to be tasked with leading the Blue Bulls rugby team in the 2013 Currie Cup season. This was a huge moment not only in my career but in my life as well. Last season, we had a fairly young team and unfortunately didn’t make it to the play-off stage but we’ll once again be pushing for top honours during the 2014 season.” .Over the years, South Africa has managed to remain one of the top three nations which continue to dominate world rugby. Since readmission into international competitions, the Springboks have managed to win two rugby world cups. “For the Springboks to remain competitive and claim the top spot in world rugby, sustainable talent development efforts such as the FNB Varsity Cup, are crucial,” Pienaar said.

The Kenshikai Kibler Park members who took part in the Shuseki Shihan William Oliver Memorial Challenge.

The time has come to see who is actually the in form all-round team and possibly the best nation in world cricket at the moment. The Aussies have arrived in South Africa on the top of a fantastic By Craig Norris summer down under, smashing the England team in all formats of the game. It is quite unbelievable that the ICC, who govern the game, do not schedule a five match test series, such as the Ashes, between the Proteas and the Aussies. These two nations have consistently been at the fore of International Test Cricket over the last few years and deserve to do the battle of a five match test series. However, down to the business of the series ahead. The Proteas key bowlers for me will be Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander. I do hope that the Proteas management select Robin Peterson ahead of Imran Tahir as the spin option, as Peterson in the past has shown that he is also no slouch with the bat. Smith and De Villiers with the bat are my two bets as to where the bulk of our runs will come from. The Aussies danger will come from the in form Ashes opening batsman, Chris Rodgers, skipper Michael Clarke and all-rounder Shane Watson; along with quick bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddell and the ever reliable Ryan Harris. Nathan Lyon should hopefully pose no problem on the South African wickets with his off-spin bowling, but the Proteas batsmen need to make sure that they don’t underestimate Lyon as the England batsmen did. I look forward to the contest ahead and do believe that our boys will step up to the plate and remain as the number one test team after the test series.
