World Spay Day World Spay Day is traditionally the last Tuesday in February each year. This year, Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg will be celebrating this important day on 25 February and they invite their welfare clients to visit them before the date to book their animals for a free sterilisation on the day. The following conditions apply: - You are an existing hospital client - Your animal is vaccinated up to date and is checked by the vet at the normal consultation fee, before 22 February - Animals must be healthy and under 1 years of age and free of disease, not pregnant, on heat, with only one testicle or suffering from any pathology of the reproductive tract - Only 1 sterilisation per family is allowed - Only 20 places are available on a first come first served basis, if the conditions have been met - The veterinarian will make the final decision about bookings. Sterilisation ensures that pets live longer,
healthier lives and m a k e better pets. It helps to reduce the risk of disease (e.g. mammary tumours, uterine infections), decreases aggression and reduces the number of unwanted animals born that end up in shelters or are given away to unsuitable homes where the problem of unsterilised animals will be continued. Sterilisation makes good financial sense too, as money does not need to be spent feeding more animals than one can afford. AACL invite their hospital clients (those needing welfare assistance), to visit them in the consulting hours: Monday-Friday 09:00-11:00 and 13:00-15:30, Saturday 08:30-11:00. The standard consultation and vaccination fees will apply. For more information contact Sr Cindy Price on 011 435 0672.

Contrast or balance? Last week was an interesting one; Monday night I spent over two and a half hours waiting for information outside an alleged murder scene in Bassonia (a man was murdered and then stuffed in a dustbin and left in a parking lot), in my pink stotjies nogal. Tuesday and Wednesday I was in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court covering the Theologo trial, following the event where two girls were set alight in an alleged satanic ritual. Oh how I welcomed the end of this trial, as interesting and challenging it was to cover I don’t want to see court room 13 for a long time, more because it dragged on for so long. On Wednesday when I entered courtroom 13 the ‘Golf Club gang’ trail was underway and I was in the presence of the 17 suspects accused of rape, assault and murder. One casually walked past me with his shackles bumping my handbag in order to get to the prison warden. Yet, on Tuesday night I was singing praise and worship songs at my church with British guest speaker and musician Jake Isaacs. And Wednesday night I had my weekly dose of prayer and Bible study. I laugh at the contrast. It is just crazy, but it is life. We live in a sick world and I chose a career to write about and expose the sickness, but at the same time I strive to seek the truth, knowing that God is alive, and aspire to see the bigger picture - that God is in control and at the end of the day light will prevail over darkness. Being a journalist there is definitely a thrill of breaking a big story and an adrenaline rush of being in court, and getting firsthand accounts on incidents is exhilarating. I won’t lie, I enjoy it. The question in light of this though: Is this a balanced life, or total contrast? I would like to think of it as balance, as me going to church is my foundation and support to face what I encounter as a journalist. I mean these kinds of stories can consume you; you need to see the good in the world as well. Even though it is a life of stark contrast, this is the life I live. Life imprisonment for Wagner

He claims an evil spirit took over him in hopes he would be acquitted and he was prepared to lie under oath “I will be visiting Kirsty’s grave on Sunday and will lay her to rest knowing justice was served,” Liesha Du Toit, Kirsty Theologo’s cousin told tame TIMES after Judge Borchers handed down Lindon Wagner and Robin Harwood’s sentences on 12 February in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. Lindon Wagner, the alleged leader, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder (count 2) and 18 years for attempted murder (count 3). These sentences will run concurrently. Robin Harwood was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for both charges. Both were deemed to be unfit to have a firearm license. Kirsty Theologo and Bronwyn Grammer were strangled, doused with petrol and set alight on a hill in Linmeyer on 21 October 2011. Theologo died a few weeks later and Grammer survived. Jeremy King and Lester Moody pleaded guilty to the charges of murder, attempted murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Wagner and co-accused Courtney Daniels, Robin Harwood and Harvey Isha pleaded not guilty. Last year November Harvey Isha was acquitted on all three counts (count 1 assault (GBH), count 2 - murder, count 3 attempted murder). Courtney Daniels was found guilty of common assault (five years suspended), but was acquitted on count 2 and 3. Lindon Wagner and Robin Harwood were found guilty of murder and attempted murder.
Borchers explained that society is appalled by the case and it was an unusual and perverted thing to do. She added that it attracted a lot of media attention due to the satanistic aspect. “None of the accused are actually Satanists, but could be seen on the verge of becoming satanists due to their curiosity.” Borchers rejected the substantial and compelling evidence Lydia Van Niekerk, Wagner’s lawyer, gave on 11 February. “He claims an evil spirit took over him in hopes he would be acquitted and he was prepared to lie under oath,” Borchers said. However, Borchers did accept some of the substantial and compelling evidence for Harwood, which accounts for the lighter sentence. Both Wagner and Harwood will apply for leave to appeal. tame TIMES asked Harwood’s mother, before court commenced, how she was feeling. She replied, “We must accept whatever happens.” Both mothers were in tears when the sentences were handed down. State prosecutor Carina Coetzee and Booysen SAPS W/O Yende were pleased with the outcome. “It has been hard but in the end justice has been served.” Grammer was not present for the sentence, however she told tame TIMES in a telephone interview that she is very happy as she can finally move on with her life with no court distractions. She found Harwood’s sentence to be a bit unfair, but overall she is happy. “I am over the moon with Lindon’s sentence.”

Expulsion for Glenvista High learners Two learners involved in the filmed assault of a Glenvista teacher last year in September, the boy who assaulted the teacher and the learner who filmed the attack, were found guilty of expel-worthy transgressions and were expelled from Glenvista High School. The assaulter was found guilty of assaulting the teacher and bringing the school in disrepute, and the other learner for the latter charge. The video recording went viral and showed the grade 8 learner and teacher in a struggle over a bag. The young boy gets into a furious rage and assaults the teacher with a broomstick. The teacher gets hit with a chair by another learner and chased by the grade 8 learner who carries on throwing the broom and stones at him. Other learners are heard in the background cheering the learner on. The teacher opened an assault case against the learner, but did openly forgive him and wanted him to get help. The criminal matter was diverted and the
pupil attended a diversion programme, since completed. According to a report from IOL, a letter from Boy Ngobeni, the Gauteng Department of Education head of department, approved the expulsion and recommended that the teenager attend a diversion programme on anger management. He also informed the parents of the right to appeal against the expulsion within 14 days of receiving the notice. The family, however, did not appeal. Phumla Sekhonyane the Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson said, “The South African Schools Act requires that alternative placement should be found in cases where learners of school going age have been expelled from another school. The learners have therefore been placed at other schools.” tame TIMES contacted Glenvista High School’s Governing Body for comment, however the chairman, Prince Maluleke, found no need to comment.

LADIES IN RED: Sharon Smith (Cotlands), Toni Mackrell (Woman @ Work), and Lorraine Sutherland theguest speaker for the evening. On Wednesday 12 February the ladies of the Woman @ Work networking forum held their first event of the year at the Glenvista Country Club, to welcome their new members and to celebrate womanhood. The theme of the event was Valentine’s Day and the topic was ‘celebrating the woman you are’. All the ladies dressed-up smartly in red and spoilt each other with goody bags and Valentine’s presents that were sponsored by the forum members. Each month the ladies have networking events, where they have the opportunity to promote their businesses and to make friends and contacts. At each event they donate to a charity of choice as part of their Woman @ Work Cares initiative. This month, the ladies decided to donate to Cotlands and a few of the ladies were especially generous
and donated up to R5000. The guest speaker for the evening was Lorraine Sutherland, a motivational speaker, etiquette teacher and businesswoman, who spoke about celebrating womanhood and the qualities of a healthy and confident woman. Her advice was to love the skin you are in, to make positive affirmations every day and to be passionate about what you do in your life. The owner and founder of Woman @ Work, Toni Mackrell, who started this forum five years ago, was very pleased with everyone’s support and input into making the evening a success. A total of 120 ladies attended the event, and currently she has nearly 5000 registered ladies on her database. She is very excited about the year ahead and hopes to welcome many more fabulous ladies to the forum.
Marilyn Ramos, Miss SA 2012, joined Sue Lubbe and Friends Charity at Reuven Senior Complex to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The seniors were treated to good company, ice cream with red jelly and soft drinks, and later a large hand-out of clothing to ensure that they will be prepared for the cold winter. According to Lubbe, the beauty queen is particularly fond of young South Hills resident Megan de Waal, a 4-year-old cancer patient that became paralysed after a tumour was removed when she was two. Sadly the cancer has returned. “Prayers for this little girl and her family are what we need, by praying maybe they could find a cure to help save her life. She is an

DA has a constitutional right to march Manny de Freitas MP writes:
Hallo al my lojale lesers!
Unsurprisingly the JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department) denied permission for the DA to march on the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House. Equally unsurprisingly, every march led by the ANC or its alliance partners are allowed to take place unhindered. The DA was forced to go to court to ensure that they can indeed peacefully march through the streets of Johannesburg. But this is not just about a march, it is about protecting the Constitution and ensuring that it is not in danger. If my right to the freedom of peaceful expression is curtailed, then your right is being curtailed. Plain and simple. Ironically, the ANC are claiming that the DA is being “provocative”, yet it is the ANC that
used disturbing language by saying that it will form a “ring of steel” to defend Luthuli House. What is it defending when the DA has clearly stated that it wishes to march peacefully? What does President Zuma mean when he says this march is “dangerous”? This march is an opportunity not only to highlight that the ANC is not creating jobs, and that its manifesto confirms this, but also it is an opportunity to protect our Constitution, which we see being eroded day by day by the ANC. It is not up to the ANC to decide who may or may not march. Anyone should be able to do so even if the ANC or anyone else doesn’t like it. It is the Constitution that is supreme, not the ANC or its president.
Does NNC resolve issues? Unsatisfied citizen writes: I contacted the National Consumer Protection Commission on 27 January as I have been experiencing problems with a contractor that did work on my swimming pool in April 2013. I advised them about the problem with regards to black stains, yellow discoloration and paint peeling off of my swimming pool. I have contacted the contractor numerous times, starting in December, to come and resolve my problem, but needless to say he is dodging me by never showing up for the appointments he makes with me. His 5-year guarantee is just not living up to its expectations and this contractor has got complaints on Hello Peter, with clients experiencing the exact same problem as me. What is the NCC there for? It is impossible to
get any type of response from these guys. I have been in contact with an employee who seems to have vanished off of the planet. I haven’t been assigned a case number in just short of a month. All my questions go completely ignored. Does the NCC actually resolve issues? What are they there for if they cannot even protect us in line with the consumer protection act? The NCC has got multiple complaints on Hello Peter regarding their “No Feedback” on clients’ requests. It looks like I am going to have to go the more expensive route of suing the contractor. The NCC was approached for comment. tame TIMES also attempted to contact the contractor, but to no avail.
A diligent professional in Postal Services Neville Peters writes:
This letter is to commend Ms Julia Magalane for her dedication to her work; she is a gem to be cherished. It took us almost a week to trace a parcel from the United States, with numerous telephone calls to 0860 111 0500 with no response. All we got every time was “Your call is important to us, all our agents are busy”. We then called all the call and complaint centres, plus PR and Management numbers, to no avail and with all of them out-of-order.
Out of desperation and frustration we called the Witspos Number 011 495 0500 and spoke to the lady referred to, Ms Magalane. Within a day, not a week, she solved our problem. She should not only be commended, but given a medal for her diligence and service to the Postal Service Organisation. If only Postal Services had more like her, they would go from strength to strength in bettering their service to South African citizens.

Where do we leave the issue
By Nieto Hernandez
Opposition is not necessarily enmity; it is merely misused and made an occasion for enmity Sigmund Freud I would forgive anyone who didn’t know that the previous week’s scenes in Johannesburg were actually about a genuine problem for South Africa on all sides of the country’s political landscape - the unacceptably high statistic of unemployed South Africans, especially youth. Although the cause may have been legitimate and noble, a number of fundamental blunders by both DA and ANC could have ended in a Marikana sequel. People’s lives were (either deliberately, or as consequence of short-sightedness) placed in danger for the sole benefit of a political branding exercise. The DA must be applauded for speaking up against mediocrity. In the past all the government has succeeded in doing is to make it increasingly difficult for entrepreneurs to conduct business and, as a result, placing more pressure on itself, as the population who does not qualify is now more reliant on social grants and crime. That having been said, I question the direction of the protest. In SA, although the line may be blurred, there is a separation of party and state. So when we vote we vote for the party we want to assume the role of government, the party is not however the government. So mistake number one (the opening of the can of worms), was marching to Luthuli instead of the Union Buildings. The second blunder on the cards was the day and time this march was scheduled for. Unemployment affects all South Africans, it would have served the cause much better if South Africans with and without jobs stood together to make the government realise the issue’s seriousness. On the ANC’s side of the fence, I fail to understand why they had to bus in armed people into Jozi to protect Luthuli House. What was the DA’s presence threatening? The second blunder of the ruling party, which brings up a question about standards, was the fact that only a few days before the strike they were condemning Malema’s EFF for promoting violence. What peace will be realised while we stand with bricks in hands and with clenched fists? All of these have robbed South Africa of an opportunity to find multi-party solutions to our very real problem. Let’s chat. Let me know what your thoughts on this topic are via e-mail voice@tametimes.co.za or drop me a tweet @NietoVoice.

Protect your child All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse
When are you too old to be called a child? The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 stipulates that any person aged 0-18 years is a child. Adults are aged 19 and older. What are children’s rights? All children have the right to be protected against any form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Parents who neglect their children or severely assault them are also overstepping their boundaries. We have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 to report suspected cases of child abuse to police, social workers or any designated child protection organisation in the area. If you are aware of child abuse and you turn a blind eye, you can also be prosecuted when it is

eventually reported. By law, parents are not allowed to physically hit or belt a child at all. However, many parents believe in a proper hiding. When parents discipline a child, however, it must not be traumatic, as the child can report the adult for physical abuse in severe cases. Why should we protect our children and why is it important to look after them? Child protection is not merely a right, but it is important for their development. Any child needs to grow in all aspects of their lives: physically, emotionally, economically, spiritually, culturally and mentally. Parents and/or guardians and even the larger community are responsible for proper development of our children.
Important definitions: Physical abuse is any act that results in inflicted injury or death to a child. Assault is a severe form of physical abuse inflicted through belting, for example. Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities. It is abuse whether the child has consented or not. Neglect is deliberately not providing for a child’s physical needs (such as food, warmth, shelter or protection from danger). Failure to seek or follow through with medical care and failure to make provision for the child’s education is also seen as neglect. Emotional and psychological abuse: a pattern that harms or limits a child’s emotional development or sense of self-worth. It can take the form of criticism, threats or rejection, ignoring, isolating, taking advantage, corrupting, swearing at a child and lying to a child. Child exploitation is exposure of a child to the following situations: - Child Labour - Slavery - Sexual exploitation - Child-pornography - Child trafficking How do you know whether a child is being abused? Other signs also include obsessions, inappropriate sexual behaviour, inappropriate anger, bed-wetting and difficultly sleeping or nightmares. Important to know: In South Africa, there has been a significant increase in child abuse, especially with boys. According to national stats, approximately one in five children are abused. It has been proven that approximately 80% of the sexual abuse offenders are well known by the family and/or the children. The stereotype that only men are sexual perpetrators is a myth; women are equally dangerous. The abuser often abuses. It is a vicious cycle of perpetration. The child stores the traumatic memory and once the child is an adult with children of his or her own, abuse is an automatic reaction that is triggered. Adults who were abused as children need to speak about their experience in order to divert from this cycle. Do not try to do your own investigation of the abuse. If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, report it to the police, the Department of Social Development or your nearest designated protection organisation.

Battle in the streets WE WANT OUR VOICE TO COUNT: Glenvista residents with ID books in hand before they register. The last voter’s registration weekend is done and dusted, and the fifth national general elections will be held on 7 May. What do South Africans do up until Election Day? For people who have already made up their mind who they will be voting for, they will watch how political parties campaign in order to gain votes; and those who are still undecided will use these election campaigns to help them make their choice. According to Provincial Electoral Officer (PEO) of IEC Mr Masego Sheburi the commission had determined a target of 1,1 new registrations to achieve an organisation wide 80% enrolment of eligible voters. Below is the breakdown of the Gauteng results: × Organisationally IEC have surpassed the target with a registration figure of 1 259 500. × Gauteng has contributed 339 728 new registrations out of total activity of 815 692 during the past weekend. × This represents 26,13% contribution to the national registration figure.
× Consistent with a youthful campaign, the majority of new registrations are persons aged 16-29 years of age. The registration for this age cohort is 257 985. × While IEC fell short of reaching the 80% registration target as a province, they have nonetheless surpassed the psychological 6 million mark in the provincial segment of the voters roll. They retain their position as the biggest voting bloc. × An important area of performance is that they availed convenient opportunities to voters to check and update their registration details. In this regard 437 604 persons have updated their details by re-registering in different Voting Districts. × An already entrenched trend of there being more females than males on the voters roll perpetuates with 51% of new registrations being by female voters. Please note, for the South Africans who have not registered yet, you have until 7 May is proclaimed and Gazetted to visit IEC or municipal offices to register.

Zille and DA have lost the plot Clr Izak Berg (National Chairperson of the Independent Ratepayers Association of SA) writes: First it was the turn-around by the DA on BEE, followed by the disaster with AGANG and now the march in Johannesburg. What did she think by organising this march, there could only be one loser, the DA - and did they lose this round by a knock-out. There are many other means of showing muzzle and the disapproval with the ruling party than to march through the streets of Johannesburg, resulting in businesses to close in fear of political violence, costing these businesses an arm and leg in revenues for the day (which can lead to job losses, not job creation). These actions have left all DA supporters with egg on their faces, as one of their own councillors has put it. Is there a leader in the DA to stand up against Zille and called for her head after these disasters? I don’t think so. The fact that Zille and the DA has requested a leader from another party to be their Presidential Candidate in the upcoming elections (which backfired), shows that Zille has no confidence in the current leaders of the DA. How can she and the DA then expect the voters to have confidence in the DA and their leadership?

Pregnancy awareness week
EAGER TO EDUCATE: Nurse Carin Hanekom and dietician Candice Lawrence. Monday 10 February marked the start of National Pregnancy Awareness Week. The purpose of this week is for moms-tobe to have the opportunity to find out more about a healthy pregnancy at their local hospitals. The Netcare Cinton Hospital held an information session in the maternity ward where interested pregnant women could come for advice on how to manage their changing bodies, what diet to follow to ensure that the baby is healthy and what to expect during and just after labour. All the ladies received pregnancy magazines and little goodies, like dummies, to store for the big day. Nurse Carin Hanekom, who works in the lactation ward, and dietician Candice Lawrence eagerly answered every lady’s question to ensure that they left the hospital well-informed. “It is very important to eat healthy during pregnancy. You can develop pregnancy-related diabetes if you do not eat correctly,” warned Lawrence, who did a presentation on a healthy diet during pregnancy. Hanekom explained how to breast feed correctly and she emphasised the importance of including the father in the pregnancy experience, so that the mom has support and to allow the baby to bond with both parents. NUTRIENTS NEEDED: Pregnancy nutrition; important nutrients to consume during pregnancy: - Folic Acid - for healthy brain and spine development. - Essential fatty acids (such as Omega-3) builds healthy brain cells - Calcium - for bone and teeth development - Iron - ensures a healthy placenta and helps the baby to build his/her own store to prevent anaemia during the first six months - Water - necessary for growing cells and for breast mild production - Calories - for the baby’s brain to grow healthily - Also remember that it is natural and healthy to gain weight during pregnancy; an average weight gain of approximately 13.6 kg is recommended.
Styling hair
according to your hair-type Hairstylists are always warning their clients to use products that are ideal for your specific hair type. However, what are the main hair types and how must one treat and style each one? tame TIMES spoke to local hairstylists and got a few tips: Main hair types and how to style each: Curly: after shampooing and conditioning the hair, use a good curling cream to lock the curls in. Scrunchdry the hair with a towel and off you go. Curly hair is ideal for a wash-andwear style. Tip: Do not touch or brush the curls once they are dry, because it will get fluffy and frizzy. If you frequently straighten your hair to get rid of curls, use a proper heat-protective spray or lotion that protects the hair against flat irons as hot as 230 to 260°C. Straight: the biggest challenge with straight hair is its inability to hold a style. Use a styling aid, such as hair
spray, a strong mousse and a curlingtong to add body and bounce to flatstraight hair. Tip: hair sprays have different levels of strength, but we usually categorise them into two categories: hard hold and soft hold hair spray. Use hard hold when you want your hair style to last very long. Hard hold is ideal for matric farewell dances or fancy functions and if your hair is in a style that it does not naturally take. Use soft hold hair spray on a normal day to support your hair style and to keep a natural look. This is also ideal for ladies who frequently touch their hair. Hard hold tends to make the hair look hard. Course: this hair type is naturally very dry and frizzy; it is therefore important to use products that moisturise the hair to make it look silkier. Tip: use hair treatments or masks when your hair feels as if it has been compromised by too much dye.

Fine: this hair type is usually very limp and in desperate need of body and volume. To style, use the same advice given under straight hair, but remember that fine hair can break more easily. If your hair is fine and you dye it frequently, the chemicals can compromise the protein in the hair. Elastic bands that are too tight can also break fine hair easily. Tip: the more damaged and dull your hair feels and looks, the more you need to cut it. Overall, make sure to cut your hair every time your style grows out.

Share a little, save a life: Become a stem cell donor today
Of all things bright and beautiful, the sunflower stands tall. Always lifting its head, always looking up, always seeking the warmth and the light. What better symbol of hope than a Sunflower in a world which is so often dark and made darker still by the onset of a tragic illness? Simple, bold and strong, it is a universal symbol, used by many organisations around the world, Always as a symbol of light and strength and hope. CEO of the Sunflower Fund, Tina Botha’s teenage son, Chis Corlett, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. His only chance of survival was a bone marrow stem cell transplant. At the time The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SAMBR)
had less than 1000 donors. After his first unsuccessful autologous transplant and an unsuccessful search over 6 million donors worldwide for a second unmatched transplant, Tina began her crusade to find him a suitable donor. During this time, in 1999, The Sunflower Fund formed in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett and Darren Serebro’s heroic struggle against leukaemia. It was formed by a group of parents whose children had contracted leukaemia, and in some cases lost their battle against it. Their aim was to increase the number of donors on SABMR. They hoped to give Chris and other patients a chance at finding a suitable donor. Their hard work paid off and Chris had a donor. He underwent his second transplant and life seemed normal. Unfortunately, Chris relapsed and passed away. A painting, Sunflowers of Hope, was painted by Chris before his death. Others, in their

days of darkness, have done the same. What a better symbol to be attached to a cause, which Chris and Darren fought so bravely for. The Sunflower fund has to generate funds to fight this good fight, but they still need more donors. Finding the correct donor match depends on tissue type and because people’s genetic make-up is so varied and their tissue types are inherited characteristics, the chance of finding a suitable match is slim. In South Africa we have even more unique combinations of tissue types and therefore we need larger registry that proportionately reflects these unique tissue types. The people of South Africa are what it takes to help the Sunflower Fund save lives. You may be someone’s only chance, so why not give a little to save a life? Clr not included in ward 54 Ten Plus launch DA Ward 54 Councillor, Sergio Dos Santos feels that the Mayor and his wife have reached an unprecedented low. According to Dos Santos an invitation was sent out to local community organisations and local government departments to attend “The ward 54 Launch of the Ten Plus Programme of the City of Johannesburg”. “This was done by the “Mayoral Spousal Office” an “office” that has no official or legal status,” Dos Santos said. “I am shocked to discover that such an invitation and activity is taking place without my involvement or participation as the duly democratically elected councillor in that ward. The invitation has been sent to ‘integral stakeholders’ yet I received no such invitation. If I’m not an integral stakeholder as the ward councillor then I don’t know who is,” explained Dos Santos. The invitation claims that the “Ten Plus is a multi-disciplinary programme of the City of Johannesburg launched in 2012 and piloted in a few wards towards combating crime and grime in communities. The City allocates 10 officers per ward as well as teams from urban management, emergency services, social development and environmental health practitioners to work directly with communities in a coordinated manner.” “I will be attending this event and will be asking publically why I was not invited or consulted as the democratically elected ward councillor,” Dos Santos said. Clr Dos Santos said that this must be explained to the residents of ward 54.
Southgate Mall makes a difference On 7 February, wonderful surprises were in store for the orphaned children of Carl Sithole Centre in Klipspruit. On the day Southgate Mall donated R10 000, clothing items and watches worth R20 000 to the children of the orphanage. The children welcomed the Southgate Mall team with screams of jubilation, chanting ‘Southgate Mall, Southgate Mall!’ Oageng Mariri of Southgate Mall said, “Hearing those sweet innocent voices, seeing those happy smiley faces and little ones running towards me hugging my legs really pierced my heart and made me forget all the stress I’ve had to endure while working on the co-ordination of this project. I felt I was living a life with a purpose.” Southgate Mall started this project in December as a strategic move to capitalise on the mall patrons’ festive spending spree and make a difference in a child’s life by buying at
least one gift to a child. To ensure that every single child at the orphanage received a gift, Southgate Centre Management, Edgars and Timehouse contributed by filling the gaps where some of the children’s needs were not met by customers. A portion of the funds were donated by Greenwash & Wax, an ecofriendly mobile car wash service operating on a trial basis at Southgate Mall. Southgate Operations Manager Mr Gift Poka said, “Southgate Mall takes every opportunity to assist in the community and in looking after the country’s future leaders. By ploughing back to the community all the while deriving pleasure from it, this is the Madiba legacy that the mall resonates with.” The community at large is invited to visit Southgate Mall and to leave a message to our cherished Madiba at the Remembrance Wall that was set up at Entrance 2 during the festive season.

The foundation skills for math, literacy and science are laid during the first six years of life. During these early years children are most receptive to new information and so they grasp seemingly difficult concepts rather quickly. It is important for parents to take advantage of these early years by offering children adequate stimulation and access to learning resources. In light of this crucial window of opportunity, Cotlands Turffontein is offering free early learning classes for two hours twice a week. Each early learning lesson is delivered by an early learning facilitator who assists children in reaching their full learning potential. They provide children with a nutritious meal after each class and offer vaccinations during outbreaks. Research has shown that children who are exposed to early learning opportunities are often better equipped for their schooling career. Give your child the upper hand by enrolling them in an early learning class. If you would like to take advantage of these early learning lessons call Thabo on 011 683 7201. Valentine’s Day in the clouds Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com
Imagine sitting next to your loved one with a glass of champagne, overlooking the glittering lights of the Johannesburg skyline from 55m up in the air. On Friday 14 February, Gold Reef City re-opened their magnificent Big Wheel and gave couples the opportunity to experience it together for Valentine’s Day. Gold Reef City’s Big Wheel was sent BREATHTAKING VIEW: The beautiful Johannesburg skyline as seen from the top of the to Holland, where it was made, by ship Big Wheel. for nine months to have it serviced and repaired. It has now been re-erected and re-opened to the public, and the Gold Reef City VIP guests and media were the lucky ones who had the honour to experience it first. All the guests received chocolates and champagne to enjoy on their Big Wheel ride, while romantic music played in the background. Afterwards there was a buffet and a chocolate fountain to enjoy. When it got dark, the wheel was beautifully lit and changed colour from pink, red, green, blue, and purple, to yellow. The wheel might seem less intimidating and less nerve-racking than the other rides at the theme park, such as The Anaconda or Tower of Terror, but the moment one’s cart slowly creeps up and stops at the top of the wheel, it is enough to make even the bravest people quiver. It is a majestic structure that quietly demands respect and offers a beautiful perspective on Johannesburg, as it turns slowly enough for you to cherish every moment of your 011 724 5670 www.bbattorneys.co.za chere@bbattorneys.co.za experience up in the sky.

Miller Boomtown promised and they delivered. Hip-Hop alum Kendrick Lamar along with SAMA winner Khuli Chana, Reason and Miller Marketing Manager Carmen Hobbs gave media the rundown of the event at a Miller Boomtown Press Conference at the Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst on 8 February. Carmen Hobbs expressed Millers’ devoted interest in Hip-Hip in South Africa and internationally, and just how much Miller is excited to have a heavyweight act such as Kendrick Lamar, due to his stamp of approval in the Hip-Hop world. Carmen shared that the concert in Johannesburg was sold out, with Johannesburg Stadium filled with 12 000 fans and this was just one of many steps to showcase Hip-Hop and what it has to offer.
She teased that we should look out for something big towards the end of the year. Khuli Chana mentioned that the show will be different and that he will give it his all. Reason was humble at being part of an international act, and to perform for such a huge crowd. Hot off the heels of his concert in Durban and a ground-breaking Grammy performance with Imagine Dragons; Kendrick Lamar shared his reasons behind his international hit “Swimming Pools, Drank” and how he keeps himself relevant - by staying devoted to what he does. Future collaborations he would love to have are with acts such as Nas and Erica Badu. Kendrick Lamar ended with his inspiration for his latest album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, sharing his experiences growing up in Compton, the situations he found himself in, and becoming a man. For more on Kendrick Lamar, see a video on www.tametimes.co.za.

FIRST GAME WIN: Marnitz Boshoff was the man of the match recipient. It was a proud day for faithful Lions supporters this past Saturday, when their team made a triumphant return to Super Rugby by beating the Cheetahs on their home ground. Despite this setback, the Lions kept their cool and patiently crept their way back to a half time score of 10-9 to the Cheetahs home side. Less than ten minutes into the second half, the Cheetahs managed to cross the try line once again. Boshoff, despite suffering a dangerous tackle that resulted in a yellow card against the Cheetahs, continued his stalwart performance by converting two more penalties. The home side converted a penalty of their own, putting the Lions at a two point deficit nearing the close of the match. 6013 entries for Pick n Pay Marathon
STARTING POINT: Runners start the Pick n Pay Marathon. The Pick n Pay Marathon was held on 9 February at the Saheti School in Senderwood, Bedfordview. This was the 31st year of the prestigious event sponsored by Pick n Pay and hosted by Jeppe Quondam Athletics. This year saw entries soaring to 6013 – the largest yet. Pick n Pay and Jeppe Quondam Athletics put a huge effort into a drive to get runners to pre-enter, and to enter online. It paid off: 4445 runners entered online, and all 6013 pre-entered, making it the first time that no late entries were issued. The Fun Run recorded its highest field in history with 2144 running the 8km race, this event has grown hugely as six years ago the 8km Fun Run only had 250 runners. PinkDrive, who are the event’s official charity, raised over R33 000 from the generous donations made by the runners. Bregman ties for third
FEMALE PRO GOLFER: Stacy-Lee Bregman tied for third at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters in Australia. * Photo by SMP Images. South Africa’s Stacy Lee Bregman tied for third with Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters, where American Cheyenne Woods captured her first pro title with a two shot victory at RACV Royal Pines Resort in Queensland. Bregman dropped two shots on her outward nine, but eliminated the damage with gains at the 14th, 16th and 18th holes to close with a 72. Lennarth, meanwhile, came home in three under 69 to join Bregman on 12-under-par 280. The pair finished four shots behind Woods, who held off a spirited charge from Australian amateur Minjee Lee and claimed the glory
with a final round 69. Bregman had a solid 2013 and the joint third finish following closely on a top 15 placing at the season-opening in New Zealand. The fast start has shot Bregman to second in the rankings and bodes well for the Johannesburg pro, who is chasing a first win in her eighth season on the Ladies European Tour. Fellow South African Ashleigh Simon was at the lower end of the leaderboard after an opening 74, but showed that she is shaking the rest of the festive period off with a final round 70 to tie for 39th on with compatriot, former LET number one Lee-Anne Pace, among others. Pace closed with a 72.

OFF THE PITCH
Where to now for South African Cricket? The next couple of years are extremely important for the Proteas and the growth of the new boys currently playing in the u/19 World Cup. Yes we are proud to be the number one Test team at the moment, By Craig Norris but how long will it last? Do we have the depth in our ranks to maintain this position? Current structures in place would suggest that we are doing it right, but I am not so sure. The development of the game in this country has had its problems in the past few years with the quota system, including interference from selectors, and some have suggested that we are not selecting teams on merit. What will come from the current crop of players in the u/19 World Cup, you ask yourself. Will these future stars of our game be the great players going forward and replace the likes of Gary Kirsten, Jonty Rhodes or Jaques Kallis, to name but a few? The unexpected early retirement of Jaques Kallis will obviously put pressure on our National team to perform. Any team, let alone a national team, can ill afford to lose the services of such a great player. It certainly showed in the first test match against the Aussies at Centurion Park over the last few days. Smith and co were seriously wanting in all departments of the test match. I chatted to a couple of prominent youngsters throughout South Africa this week, playing for their various franchises last week, and they admitted that their only goal was to get an IPL contract and somehow secure a future in the game. It is quite sad and the perception I get is that it is all about the money and not the game. At least three seasons in the IPL would set you up nicely for retirement, according to the numbers being thrown around. Where has the value gone in playing the game for the love of it and not the money? Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, we will see our u/19 team being crowned as champions. A great grassroots start to the modern senior game. Good luck boys.
