when it comes to crime prevention criminals can use this as an opportunity to pretend they are part of this group and assess the area waiting for chances to commit a crime. The drivers explained that they used to park at a garage opposite Forest Hill as well as in Columbine Square, but they were told to move. They are willing to have a meeting with the community, JMPD, CPF and SAPS in order to come up with a solution. The ward councillor Sergio Dos Santos commented, “It is perceived as a taxi rank as it looks like a taxi rank. I understand their problem, but at the end of the day I am here to represent the residents and the residents are upset.” Dos Santos said he experienced the same problem with other school transport organisations and suggests all of them to park in the slipway of Royal Park Road, just behind the mosque. “This road is not used by many and they won’t be in anyone’s way.”

“What are we doing wrong? We sit here between 8:00 and 12:00, we don’t disturb the neighbourhood and we keep the place clean.” This was the response of three of the drivers of Asinamali School of Transport when tame TIMES approached them last week on the open piece of ground on the corners of Potgieter Street and Columbine Avenue, Suideroord. For the past two weeks the drivers, who transport children to and from several schools in the South, have been parking their mini buses in this area while they wait for the schools to come out. However, this has caused much upset and uproar with the community. The community has labelled it an illegal taxi rank and have requested JMPD to remove them. According to Michelle Pelser of Mondeor SAPS CPF area, the JMPD has been there several times to remove them. However, the next day they come back. Two of the drivers, Mr Dlamini and Mr Khanyile were adamant in correcting the community. “We are not taxis, we are school transport.” JMPD’s spokesperson Edna Mamonyane explained to tame TIMES that a vehicle can park anywhere as long as it is not obscuring traffic, which these mini buses are adhering to. weather Getting to know Mr SA The date has been set for the Win a date with Mr South Africa competition. On 6 March, the lucky winner will be treated to a dinner sponsored by Thaba Ya Batswana, a limousine ride courtesy of Supreme Limos, flowers from On Time tT- Are you excited about the night? John: I am intrigued and interested to spend time with someone from the public to find out their views on Mr SA and maybe see where I can include the public more to strengthen the brand. tT- Please share your worst date experience John: I would definitely say it’s a date where there is nothing in common. I have had a few of those. The whole night is planned and from the offset there is a clash of personalities. Nothing worse than spending the entire night on a date and both parties would rather be at the dentist. tT- What is your best pick up line? John: To be honest I do not believe in pickup lines and I have never used them. I rather

But I can share one that I recently saw my cousin use. A guy takes his phone and goes up to the table where a girl that he is interested in sits (this is usually in a club or bar) and takes the light on the phone and acts as if he is looking for something under her table on the floor. Eventually the girl will ask him “what are you looking for” and he answers “your telephone number”. tT- What advice can you give when going on a first date? John: Do’s - Just be yourself, girls are very observant on the first date and they will see straight through fakeness. Don’ts - Don’t be mucho (girls see enough of

that), don’t talk about yourself the whole night, rather her than you (believe me girls are way more interesting then men). tT- What is the first thing you are attracted to in a woman? John: Besides what she looks like, I would have to say the connection we have. People have to have an instant connection because beauty will fade.

Make a safer career choice With only 5% of those who matriculated having been accepted into university this year, the future for aspiring academics looks bleak. But completing short courses or a part-time certificate in Health and Safety cannot just change the future of aspiring learner’s, it can also make a meaningful impact on the lives of many others. Some shocking statistics were released at the start of the new production year by the

Department of Labour. Over 24% of the SA labour force is currently unemployed while, on the other hand, 160 000 incidents and accidents were reported in workplaces in SA last year. “It is shocking to know that so many people are sitting at home because their education no longer meets industries requirements, while the absence of sufficient Health and Safety Officers is the reason why so many accidents can still occur,” one analyst said. Christopher Guy of Makrosafe agrees with the observation, but says that everything is in place to have this changed. “Makrosafe was recently informed that it’s Health and Safety Certificate course is now fully recognised by the Health and Welfare SETA,” he says. “Ever since, we have received much interest

in this course, as it is divided into six different modules for which classes can be attended on a part time basis. And to accommodate learners even more, we bring the classes to the student’s region, instead of expecting them to come to our facilities,” he adds. No basic understanding required The course has been put together with the objective to take a ‘lay-man-off-the-street’ and train him or her up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. This means that participation is open to virtually everybody. Learners are updated about things like legislation, health and safety principles, risk assessment, inspections, health and safety functions, implementation and evaluation of health and safety programmes, and in groups of 10 there is ample time to go through the material, or to have things discussed. It is Makrosafe’s mandate to enhance the quality of training in the industry. Learners who have completed the course are assured that their certificate is accepted by the industry. Accreditation by HWSETA demands that systems have to be in place, quality standards have to be met and investment in learning material as well as assessors and moderators were made.

Something by Laurelle Williams

Don’t burn your bridges I have been taught not to burn your bridges, you never know if you will need that person later on in life. So in turn, in my mind, this means even if you have a disagreement about something with a person, solve it in a friendly manner even if you agree to disagree. There is no time for being immature, bad- mouthing that person or creating a bad vibe. How would it solve the problem anyway, despite stealing your energy and creating negativity in your life? We are all human and we all have different opinions. Just because someone else’s opinion clashes with mine, doesn’t give me the right to now cut that person off in my life and not speak to them or let my behaviour change towards them. Sadly, when we do have different opinions the discussion becomes heated, as each one is trying to get their point across. But don’t be offended if someone is taking you up on your thoughts, you are doing exactly the same to them. Obviously if it gets ugly then it becomes awkward, but we shouldn’t let it get ugly. I think that is the essence of my point why are we so quick to attack someone’s character when that person has upset us in some way? Where is the love? A quote I read a few years back said, “What hurts you so badly that you have to hurt me?”I suppose this is what it comes down to: because you have hurt me in anyway (disagreeing, embarrassment, badmouthing, etc), I am now going to get even and hurt you. That is all fine and dandy in the moment of your revenge plot, but what about in a few years time when you don’t even remember why I hurt you and now we have some form of interaction and we both need each other? The moral is to learn to agree to disagree and don’t hold grudges.

Mall of the South: Traffic lights at last coming soon According to Clr Dennis Jane motorists using Rifle Range Road will be pleased to know that their frustrating wait experienced during rush hour at the stop controlled intersection at Carter Street, Forest Hill should be over within a week. “Both Balwin Properties, the developer who funded the installation, and Johannesburg Road Agency have been frustrated by some technical issues that were beyond their control. These should all have been cleared by mid- March allowing the finalisation of the process and the installation of the traffic light heads to take place.”

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY: The building of Mall of the South has started. Many residents of the South want to know more about the proposed Mall of the South that will be situated on the corner of Swartkoppies and Kliprivier Road. tame TIMES spoke to Waldo Marcus of Zenprop Property Developments. Marcus explained that a special media launch is being planned for the end of April. “We want to keep the suspense a little and therefore we are only sharing a little generic information regarding the development. At the media launch we will share renderings, tenants that have signed up and take media

Wagner and Harwood granted leave to appeal Lindon Wagner and Robin Harwood, who were found guilty of the murder of Kirsty Theologo and attempted murder of Bronwyn Grammer, were granted leave to appeal their sentences on 18 February. Wagner is appealing his conviction and sentence, and Harwood is appealing his conviction. Their case will be sent to the local provincial division and be heard by three judges. Their appeals are believed to commence within six months. Wagner was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder charge and 18 years for the attempted murder charges. Both will run concurrently. Harwood was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for both charges.

through the details of the development and what we have in store that will make this a very unique shopping experience.” Marcus did however say that Mall of the South will be aimed towards the high-end shopper living in the Southern Suburbs of Johannesburg. “It will have ample parking that is very easy to navigate, with direct access into the retail levels. We expect completion towards the latter part of 2015.” With regards to leasing opportunities, information will be communicated to the community after the media launch.

Bassonia murder: third suspect caught A third suspect (31) was arrested in South Hills yesterday morning for the murder of Paul Ferriera. He is believed to be the female suspect’s brother who is the wife of the deceased. The first two suspects(wife and other man) who were arrested shortly after the murder were both denied bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.

The Kerb Inlet (KI) slabs on the corner of Zinnia and Albert Streets, Rosettenville have finally been replaced. According to Clr Dennis Jane (ward 56), towards the end of 2011 the two damaged slabs were replaced and within weeks the replacements were stolen. “I am not sure if the theft in 2011 was in order to break up the slab to get the reinforcing steel for sale as scrap. This type of damage was not in vogue then,” Jane said “The vandalising that is taking place now for copper cable, manhole covers, KI slabs etc, including the sawing off of traffic lights, is costing the City millions that could have otherwise been used for improved services,” Jane explained.

Clr Jane would like to thank Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) for finally getting this job done. Wemmerpan Road’s KI Slabs along the road have also been destroyed and the broken concrete chunks just left in the inlet. Clr Jane appealed to Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) to remove the concrete chunks. He was informed by JRA depot management that the concrete chunks would be removed with a minimum delay. However, the KI slabs will not be replaced as they will be destroyed within hours of being replaced. Readers wishing to comment can call Clr Jane on 083 701 8856 or e-mail dkjane@ global.co.za.

Mondeor youth meets Don’t buy fauna and flora Philadelphia’s mayor from street vendors The fifth biennial C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group Mayors Summit took place earlier in February and Mondeor resident Thabang Motloung had the opportunity to attend. According to Motloung, this was the first time that an event of this kind took place on the continent of Africa, with Johannesburg having the honor of hosting it. Motloung explained that this event brought together Mayors from around the world to advance urban solutions to global climate change, through individual efforts as well as international collaborations and

engagements. “Urban leaders, sustainability and technical experts across multiple sectors exchanged ideas, forged new partnerships and addressed cities’ unique problems and challenges in confronting the issue of climate change. As a youth, I was honored and grateful to have been part of such an initiative, and outside of the importance of combating climate change, I was more interested on how I could use this platform to further extend the benefits of having such influential figures in our country.” Motloung said that between 60 and 68% of South Africans spend their disposable income on food and transportation, and for such citizens, who are barely surviving, the last thing that they want to hear about is you speaking about climate change. “It was from this realisation that I am now in communication with the Mayor of Philadelphia (USA), about how we could work together to impact the lives of the majority of South Africans who are living below the poverty line. It was very clear from my conversation with Mayor Nutter that he is the type of individual who’s willing to take his suit and tie off and get his hands dirty when given the opportunity to impact lives for the better.”

The Gauteng Conservancy and Stewardship Association will be exhibiting at the 52nd Walkerville Agriculture Show on 13 and 14 April. Visit their stand if you would like to become a member of your local conservancy. Indigenous trees and bulbs will be on sale and find out how mankind has affected the animals we live with.

Ivan Parkes, the Chairman of Gauteng Conservancy and Stewardship Association was most disturbed to see Aloe marlothii being sold on the side of the road. This was seen on the corner of Voortrekker and Hennie Alberts Road in Alberton on 15 February. “We are pleading with people not to buy these plants as this is encouraging the destruction of our biodiversity. We suspect that these plants are being stripped from the veld in the Magaliesberg Biosphere,” Parkes said.

Aloe marlothii facts: Aloe marlothii’s national tree number is 29.5. It can grow 2 to 4m high but occasionally up to 6m or more. Flowering time from May to September, occurs in vast numbers and is not threatened. If this wanton removal of the indigenous plant caries on, though, they will become threatened. The plants that were seen could be between 50 and 100 years old.

GREEN FORCES: Mayor of Philadelphia and Thabang Moutlang.

Donnington Park made beautiful Paseka Matlhaku (on behalf of the Glenvista residents) writes:

Ek en Gysie het nou die dag die interessantste ervaring gehad: ons het besluit om bietjie iets buitengewoon te doen, toe besoek ons ‘n kunsgallery. Gysie kon nog nooit verstaan hoe mense derduisende rande in ‘n oogwink op ‘n skildery kan uitgee nie. “As dit nie ‘n funksie in my huis het nie, dan vat dit net spasie op,” sê Gysie altyd. Hy verkies minimalisme in ‘n huis.

Thank you once again to Ms Ipeleng Dube, Mr Patrick Yende and Mr Jonny Jardine from City Parks for honouring their promises by installing some of the playing equipment, an extra bench and a bin as well as the cutting of the grass, respectively, at Donnington Drive Park. As I have mentioned before, working together will assist the Glenvista residents to develop a good park and slowly we are about to reach our goal. I just want to inform and assure the above mentioned officials that their dedication

and commitment has changed the lives of the residents. It is good to see young and old people playing in the park, especially on weekends, due to the fact that it is the first developed park in the Glenvista area. We are proud of your efforts and hard work. We would also like to thank Mr Charles Makgoba, who retired in December last year, but promised to render his advice and service for free until our park is fully developed. Let the struggle continue until we have a flagship park.

Depressie (5) “Swangerskap is ‘n baie belangrike fase in ‘n vrou se lewe.

Divinity through

Humanity By Nieto Hernandez

There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land - Det:15:11. There will always be poor people in the land - as much as this statement sounds condemning and negative, I see its outcomes or its promised results as necessarily humanising. That having been said I must add this disclaimer: I do not subscribe to the type of poverty that is purposefully imposed on people for the gains of others. The poverty I think the scripture refers to is the type which should prompt one to execute divinity through humanity. Goodness centres most, if not all, of Earths beliefs. So whether one believes in God, Allah, Shembe, Krishna or any other deity, the abovementioned scripture calls on humanity to fulfil or execute that divine attribute. I was prompted to comment on what I’m now spotting as a trend, the aloofness towards the plight of the poor. In many instances things are even made easy for us. Giving can be done through charity organisations, or through corporate initiatives such as KFC’s add Hope campaign or even the beggar at the traffic light. Debate is always going to be sparked over the correctness or incorrectness of the method used in giving, but consider this: we are blessed to be a blessing and you may be the only hope someone experience. So while we are locked in endless debate, we miss out on playing our part in divinity’s plan to penetrate the hearts of humanity. Let’s chat. I know many opinions exist regarding this week’s topic so let me hear them at voice@tametimes.co.za or drop me a tweet @NietoVoice.

Tips from CPF Mondeor SAPS • When buying electronic items, eg flat screen TV, laptops, please do not leave the boxes outside in the street for all to see. Criminals will see what you have purchased and prey on you. • Many houses watch TV with curtains/ blinds open, or their curtains are seethrough with the lounge light on. This is not good as outsiders can see everything in your lounge as well as your flat screen TV. Criminals walk around and see this. Try to keep the light off or close your curtains for safety purposes. Sector 2 CPF Mondeor meeting26 February Sector 2 CPF Mondeor SAPS area( Suideroord, Winchester Hills, Mondeor, Alan Manor, Meredale ext, and Ridgeway)will be having a public meeting on 26 February at 19:00 at Sasol garage -Swartgoud Street, Suideroord.

President High School recently played cricket matches against Roodepoort and Mondeor High and great achievements were attained on the field. Edwin du Plooy scored a quick 76 against Roodepoort, propelling President to 199 in 35 overs, with Kenny Weimers supporting him (64), albeit in a losing effort. The junior cricket players didn’t stand back either with Donovan Hall taking a hat-trick, being the first player in a decade from President to get such an amazing achievement. He ended up with a tally of 4 wickets in President’s victory over Mondeor High. “President’s cricket is growing with rapid pace and we look forward to see what our boys can do in the years to come,” Danie Beeslaar, a President High School Management team representative said.

HAT-TRICK: Donovan Hall is the first player in a decade from President to achieve a hat-trick.

Red and white: the colour of love

Marist Brothers Linmeyer learners celebrated Valentine’s Day by spoiling their teachers and their friends with special gifts. All learners could wear civvies to school either wearing red or white. The young ladies look especially beautiful in their dresses and the little ones were too cute for words.

tame TIMES spoke to Die Fakkel High School learners Amber Fourie (16) and Caitlyn Valentine (15), who have been selected to go to Boston’s Museum of Science for the 2014 Teen Summit in July on behalf of the Bellavista Computer Club. Fourie, who is in grade 10 said, “This is a great opportunity. I have always dreamed about it and I have to thank God for it.” Valentine explained how other learners are envious of this opportunity and she is excited as it will be her first time out of the country. The 2014 Teen Summit will be closely integrated with the INTEL Computer Clubhouse Network’s Youth Leadership initiative. Youth participants will take on integral leadership roles before and during the event, such as helping to design the Teen Summit 2014 theme and leading tracks and workshops. “Their architecture designs will be on exhibition and they will socially interact with other country club house members exchanging ideas and being exposed to new software,” Salome Kanyane, Bellavista Computer Clubhouse Teen Hub Officer said.

Kanyane will be escorting the two girls and Bradwin Nettlingham, another Die Fakkel learner, to America. Mrs Schoeman, Die Fakkel’s deputy principal is very proud of the two girls and feels it is a great opportunity for them as well as the school. Fourie and Valentine aim to learn as much as they can and come back and share the knowledge with their peers at the computer club. Both girls have been members of the clubhouse since 2008. According to Fourie the computer club keeps children out of the streets where they would use drugs. She says that younger children are attending the club house meetings. Mr Fourie, Advisory Committee Chairperson encourages them and prays they will be the light shining in the Bellavista community, showing that there is something good in Bellavista. The girls will be hosting a car wash day every Friday at the club house in order to raise money for their upcoming trip. For more information or if you would like sponsor funds towards the learners’ trip, please contact Salome on 072 727 8265 or Keith on 073 057 6602.

STEP TOWARDS THEIR DESTINY: Salome Kanyane, Amber Fourie, Mr Fourie, Caitlyn Valentine and Mrs Schoeman.

Organisers have really upped the ante this year with the introduction of the Triple Crown Polo Finish Competition; this will see three brand new VW Polo Vivo’s being given away, one for each leg of the Triple Crown. All you have to do is find your entry form in a copy of The Citizen newspaper and be at Turffontein Racecourse on the day to enter. Ten finalists will be drawn at each leg of the Triple Crown and the final draw will happen on 26 April where all three cars will be given away. National Marketing Manager for Phumelela Gaming, Michael Varney commented, “The success of last year’s Joburg Prawn Festival has grown so much that this year we have had to order over 2 tons of generously sized Queen Prawns, at which we challenge anyone to beat the prices they will be sold at. We are expecting record attendance figures at the first leg of the Triple Crown, as race goers and prawn lovers alike stand a chance to win one of the three zooty Polo Vivo’s we will be giving away.” Gates open at 11:00 and entrance is free. Commemorating Madiba with philatelic souvenir The SA Post Office issued a philatelic souvenir folder recently to commemorate the life and legacy of the late President Nelson Mandela. The folder contains a high-quality miniature sheet depicting Madiba and a brief summary of his life history. Stamp issues featuring Madiba have consistently been the Post Office’s most popular items, and the SA Post Office believes this will be no exception. The souvenir folder launched in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is one of the means of continuing the Madiba legacy. A portion of the proceeds of the philatelic folder will be donated to the Foundation. While many countries worldwide have issued and will issue commemorative philatelic items featuring Nelson Mandela, this philatelic product has the backing of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and is unique to South Africa in many ways. Chris Hlekane, Post Office group CEO, said the item is printed on the highest quality paper, using state-of-the-art printing processes to ensure that the item is immanently collectable. Printed in silver to reflect the richness of Mandela’s legacy and his stature, the miniature sheet features a portrait of Madiba in duotone. These items are printed using two different plates. The item costs R50 each and is available from all post offices. It can also be ordered online at www. virtualpostoffice.co.za.

Bulldog trials booming senior side.” This past Saturday the Bullodgs played a game against Springs. This was a friendly match before they take on the Lions seven-a-side tournament in Alberton on 1 and 2 March. Last year the Senior Union Bulldogs were the runners up when they lost with one point against UJ in the last seconds of the final.

The Union Bulldogs had their annual trials on 15 February and it was a huge success. Louis Odendaal, the club manager said, “A lot of players showed tremendous talent that is above average for February. In the junior trials some players showed their talent, which can get them playing for the

Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup registration opened Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The registration process for the 10th Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup has already started for all schools. Registrations started on 20 January and will run until 21 March. According to South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) administrator Themba Tshabalala, the football tournament continues to grow annually. “Ten years ago we started with 620 entries and last year we had more than 2300 high schools that took part in the competition. This year we are rising the bar a little bit higher, we intend to register 3500 schools countrywide. We have already put the measures in place aimed at improving our distribution of the registration forms and the collection of entry forms. There is no money expected to be paid by all the participating schools,” said Tshabalala. He said a total of R900 000 will be shared equally by all nine winning schools at their respective provincial finals. Riding the Storm The Lions maintained their unbeaten Super Rugby run with a 34-10 win over the Stormers. The win over the Western Cape Stormers secured a second home victory for the Gauteng team. The Lions opened the scoring on Saturday night through Stefan Watermeyer early in the first half. Watermeyer’s try was converted by the Lions’ currently in-form kicker Marnitz Boshoff. Boshoff, who is responsible for all 21 points that resulted in the Lions victory over the Cheetahs only a week ago, was again the reason for the smiles of many Lions fans as a result of his 6 penalties and 3 drop goals. The Lions victory did not come without a few low points. Two Lions players received yellow cards. Franco Mostert and Julian Redelinghuys were handed yellow cards in the second half. This ill-discipline offered the Stormers, who were 22-7 down at the end of the first half, a chance to claw back into the game in the second. At the end of the game the Stormers only converted 3 points, which was no match for the Lions’ second half 12 points.

OFF THE PITCH

Who has the best job in cricket? I’m sure many of us have sat at home stuck on the couch, viewing ball-by-ball play and commented about field placing, or wondered aloud about certain selections or annoyingly criticised the preparation of the pitch. But through all of our passion as fans, what would be the best job in cricket? The coach has the unenviable task of steering the ship and trying to accumulate enough positive results so as not to find himself joining the football managers in the unemployment line. Alas the coaches, no matter how successful, are eventually judged, unfairly probably, on a series that does not go according to plan. Case in point is Andy Flower, who fell on his sword following England’s humiliation in Australia. The captain, responsible for team decisions and delivering on the coaches’ promises, as well as blending new and experienced players into formidable teams, is the second most important job in the game. What about umpiring? Stern faced older gentleman, reminiscent of old school headmasters, standing dutifully out on the cricket field making pinpoint and pressure decisions. Decisions that could have a bearing on the final results and players’ careers going forward into the 1st class arena. Is commentating the job? Often where ex-players criticise the new generation. A place where cricket becomes poetry and a simple single can be made to sound like a celebration. Especially on radio where descriptions are more vivid and poetic. What about bat-maker, now that’s a job in cricket isn’t it? Do you fancy the idea of spending days or weeks crafting out a bat for one of the world’s best? Starting with a solid block of willow and carving, planning and sanding that block to create a masterpiece that scores a hundred on debut? I think all of these jobs in cricket are worthy of consideration. We know from experience that some carry more burdens than others and some have higher expectations than others, but each is uniquely important to the game. After careful consideration and through research, I can now determine that I will stick to the one cricket job that I am very good at - that of spectator. It’s a safe job. No one will take it from me and no matter how often I fail there is always a job for me the next day. Indeed, I think it is the noblest job in all of cricket.
