“I owe this to God. He guides me even in my work and He made this possible” - Andonis Antoniou Mr Andonis Antoniou from Mondeor High School was awarded the National Teachers Award and first prize for excellence in secondary school teaching in South Africa. This award was bestowed upon him by the Department of Education, based on his overall teaching achievements at Mondeor High School since he started there 15 years ago. Teachers who were interested in applying for the award had to complete various projects, such as portfolios of one’s influence at the school, for example, which were considered together with the academic achievements of the teacher’s learners. The Department started the process last year and assessed the candidates throughout the year. Mr Antoniou teaches Natural Science, Life Science and Physical Science and he is also involved in cultural activities and sport, such as Badminton. The Department, Mondeor High School staff and Mr Antoniou’s learners are tremendously proud of his outstanding achievement. I miss the sunshine PICTURE PERFECT: A still of the Dulux advert. Oscar, the 4-year-old English Sheepdog, might be up for an Oscar for his performance in a recent Dulux advert. The paint company flew their film directors and staff out from London UK to film Oscar in downtown Johannesburg for their latest paint advert last December. A local crew was used and the advert was shot at the top of the Rand Club. It took three days to film. According to Glenvista resident Sue Green, Oscar’s owner, he did brilliantly. “He had to bark on command. This took a lot of training. When I say ‘speak’ to the other dogs they bark, but Oscar has always done little hops. However, if you say rubbish truck (when the rubbish collection truck comes every week it is a highlight for the dogs), all the

dogs bark and go mad. I spent two weeks of intensive training with Oscar and eventually got the wild bark down to a nice calm bark. I really felt stupid on the rooftop saying rubbish truck, but it worked,” Green said.Oscar had to be professionally groomed each day. There was a groomer on set as well as an animal wrangler. Also present was a representitive from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, to see that Oscar was treated well. A series of adverts were filmed and Oscar is in at least two of them. Green is not sure if the advert will be flighted in South Africa. To view the advert please visit http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=cm_3dplw9YQ.

It isn’t even the end of March and I am already feeling like I did last year December -desperate for a break. I think there are a lot of factors that come into play, the main factor- this weather is horrid. For the past two weeks while we have been armed with our umbrellas and boots my energy has dissipated with every drop of rain that has fallen. It is like I am a solar heated car that depends on sunshine to go forward. As much as I keep pushing on, there is just a lull. On top of this, I fell sick last weekend due to the wet weather so I spent my first weekend off in a long time in bed, fighting off the flu. Every year I say to myself I must make a point of going away for weekends during the year as this gives you time to refresh, relax and re-ignite your flames of desire to succeed. But somehow I never get to do this. At this point in time I feel a weekend away is needed (with sunshine). My eyes blink with excitement with the fact that Friday is a public holiday. My father comes to mind as he says I am forever working. I reason this with: everything I do whether it be at work or in my personal life or even in a friendship I try to serve like I am serving God. I give it my all. I will only be here for a season, so I might as well make the most of it. I am praying we see sunshine this week so I can carry on making the most of it. I want to feel the heat on my back before I grudgingly welcome winter in to my life. I really pity people who stay in England, how depressing. This makes me realise that I must be thankful to be staying in South Africa, a country that has beautiful sunny days- where I can experience the outdoors to the fullest. I feel like a flower that is withering away, rotting by the flood of water desperate for the sunshine to dry me out and get rid of the excess water (baggage, frustration and cabin fever). I always thought of sunshine as the laughter of the earth and right now I am in need of that precious yellow laughter.

Five years for building hi-jackers Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za

A building that was hi-jacked. Two suspects were sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for fraud and two years’ imprisonment for the PIE Act contravention in the Johannesburg Regional Court on 3 March. The two accused were part of a group that formed the Johannesburg South Tenant’s Association (JSTA). This group organised a large scale attack on buildings in the south and tried to “hijack” Adelphi Court, Airesdale Court, Irene Court, Elrit Court, Rosettenville Centre, Adelphi Business Centre, Ercole Court, Jadene Court, La Rose Court, Nesdon Court and Garden Court in Rosettenville; as well as Freedley Mansions, Barbara Court, Elken Place and Rodturf Court in Turffontein; Villamez Court in La Rochelle; and Ettienne Court in Regents Park. Due to the swift action of the Hawks two

of the members of this organisation were arrested in March 2010. Bail was denied. “This offence must be rooted out for our wonderful city to go forward; and we need to rid ourselves of this scourge,” the Regional Court Magistrate, Mr H Louw, said in his pronouncement of the sentence. He went on to say that South Africa’s legislation is sorely lacking to address the problems encountered in this matter. He added that the legislature must enact and expand on the common law to include fixed corporeal property in the offence of theft; and it must provide for a protection program for state witnesses. Furthermore, in referring to the sentencing provisions in the PIE Act, he stated that they were shockingly inappropriate. The accused and other co-perpetrators formed the JSTA, placed people in the buildings as tenants and began to persuade and intimidate tenants into not paying their rent and utilities, promising them instead rent free accommodation and a return of the last 5 years’ rental in return for an affiliation and monthly fee payable to them. Mr Birkenstock, a director of TUPA, the managing agents of the blocks of flats, testified that before the arrival of this group they had not experienced any problems with tenants and had a good relationship with them. This group prevented the owners, agents and contractors from entering the premises or speaking to the tenants. Rental

payments ceased almost overnight. TUPA applied in the High Court for an interdict to prevent members of the JSTA from dealing with the buildings in this fashion. The State argued that there had been a common purpose among the perpetrators. Mr Louw, stated in his judgment that, “The JSTA was a group of like-minded individuals who acted in a manner that was designed to make buildings ungovernable”. The Court made a finding that the accused were in fact part of the JSTA and was satisfied that there was clear testimony of prior agreement of the modus operandi of the JSTA; and the actions of the unknown members of JSTA could be imputed to the accused. The owners lost a total of R 736,049.21 in rentals and utilities during December 2009 and March 2010. The loss in commission to TUPA was R 45,000 and in addition TUPA had to pay legal fees in the amounts of R 182,000. Mr Birkenstock testified that there were other indirect costs suffered such as the repairs to the electrical boxes and doors; the allocation of more staff to collect the rental; and the changing of systems. The accused was sentenced to a further 5 years’ imprisonment for attempted extortion as well as 3 months’ imprisonment for being an undocumented foreign national in SA.

Thaba Eco Hotel spoils their Task must be New chapter brides-to-be done right the first time Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com

AT YOUR SERVICE: The Thaba Eco Hotel banqueting team. Thaba Eco Hotel hosted an exciting bridal breakfast and wedding exhibition on Saturday 8 March. The event served as an opportunity for engaged couples who are interested in getting married at the venue, to meet the Thaba team. Thaba Eco Hotel hosts various bridal functions throughout the year to get to know their clients and to allow them to learn more about the wedding packages they have to offer. It is also a fun way for the Thaba team and suppliers to showcase their venue and to become familiar with their guests. “We like to get to know you as a person. We want to build a trusting relationship with you,” said Marguerite Erasmus, who is part of the Thaba

banqueting team. According to Erasmus, many of the brides who attended the event have confirmed that they will be having their special day at Thaba Eco Hotel. The banqueting team is very honoured to have been chosen to help the couples plan their big day. Apart from the breakfast, the guests had the opportunity to win generous prizes by participating in a dancing competition and a lucky draw. Everyone was a winner and almost every couple walked away with a gift. One of the lucky winners will soon enjoy a romantic weekend away and another won exciting wedding vouchers. Thaba staff ensured that every bride-to-be was properly spoilt, and left with a smile.

Some time ago a resident told Clr Dennis Jane about a Jacaranda tree in JC Lucas Park (between Daisy and Zinnia Streets, Rossettenville) that appeared to be dying. According to Clr Jane he alerted JHB City Parks (JCP) and they were requested to appraise the situation and take appropriate action. The decision was to remove the tree. However, on inspection, while most of the tree had been felled and removed, a rather dangerous stump remained. A request was made to the local JCP manager to make the stump safer. “Within days it was done. The question that needs to be answered (while this incident involved JCP, all other municipal controlled entities and other council departments need to give it some thought as well), is: Why was the job not done properly the first time round?” Clr Jane asked.

Toe ons uiteindelik by ongevalle kom, toe is

I am proud being a one man show with a laptop with what I achieve in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. I have without fail tabled many recommendations during council meetings, which have been accepted by the full council, while your members in council can’t even get a motion worded correctly to be debated in council. This one man show has more recommendations approved in council than all the opposition parties together, which clearly indicates that I serve the community of Ekurhuleni while your members play politics. I don’t sit in a political party with members complaining about how hard they work in getting votes for the DA, while the top leadership is chasing voters away from the DA. The DA leadership in not even in touch with their party members, how can they be in touch with the voters? I know you don’t fill

stadiums because you can’t do it. You only had 15 000 people at your manifesto rally, which I described as a disappointment for a party that is the official opposition. Where were you and the councillors of Ekurhuleni during the march, or was it a case of rent-acrowd as claimed by the ANC? I am not a mouthpiece for any political party, as you stated, but a mouthpiece for all the residents in Ekurhuleni. I am in Council to do the right things, not the popular things. All the statements in my letter was correct, leaving you and all your party members with egg on your faces; namely, your party did do a turn around on BEE, your party did appoint a leader from another party to be your presidential candidate, your party did march in Johannesburg CBD resulting in businesses closing down for the day, and now your party is supporting the reopening of land claims. I rest my case.

Start working for the people Phillip Venter writes: I refer to the article by Councillor Dennis Jane, “Defending The Councillors”. Clr Jane claims that the statistics he has provided illustrates that the Johannesburg City Council employees are not performing their jobs. If so, where did he obtain these statistics? Are they from a call centre? From the City management? If so, the very source of the table is tainted. If these statistics are a true reflection of the inefficiency of Council employees, who are being paid by the rate payers, and why is nobody being held accountable for the poor work performance? Where does the buck really stop? Does the Mayor run the City like a business, that needs to hire qualified staff that is working towards improving the lives of all who live in Johannesburg, or is the Mayor running the City as his personal fiefdom? Of course elections are around the corner so everyone blames everyone else for the things that are not working. Of course they pat themselves on the back for the things that are working. Johannesburg is slowly disintegrating into a

City where potholes are king, where corruption is at the order of the day and no-one takes responsibility for their actions. Why are we as voters allowing this to happen? Clr Jane is very glib to pass the buck off to the Council employees and allocate blame to them, but he (and every other elected official) must also answer to the voters for their lack of making good on their promises to make a change in Southern Johannesburg. It is of little comfort to know how to report a problem and obtain a reference number if the complaints are not attended to timeously or at all. Clr Jane has been a councillor for 14 years and I am not aware of any changes or improvements that he has brought about in the South in this time. I trust that the councillors and Council employees will change their attitude and start working for the people that they represent and who pay their salaries, stop caring only for themselves and show the results of their efforts in actual delivery. *Clr Jane’s response will be published in next week’s paper.

Home Affairs employees allowed to have outside job Manny de Freitas MP writes: Recent written replies by Minister Naledi Pandor to my questions have revealed some shocking facts. In mid-2013 I asked questions about Home Affairs officials who have jobs outside of the department that may conflict with their functions in the department. The Minister replied by indicating that the matter was being “evaluated” and that I would be receiving her findings in due course. I received nothing. I posed the question again before the end of 2013. Again, I was fobbed off. In January, I asked the question again. Last week I received a reply. Minister Pandor replied that no less than 31 Department of

Home Affairs employees have jobs outside of the department. One of them is on a senior management level. To make it worse she explained that these employees have permission to have these outside jobs. Unlike the Western Cape Government, the National and the other eight Provincial Governments allow officials to have jobs outside of their official government duties. The Western Cape has introduced legislation that prohibits officials to have outside interests. Such officials may well have vested interest that benefit their back-pockets and in turn may well compromise the tax payer. Is it any wonder that Home Affairs is in the shambles it’s in!

Being safe with Find U ADT Security South Africa’s recently launched “FindU” smartphone application is a personal safety and monitoring system that extends the private security provider’s service, for monitoring and responding, beyond the home or business premises to offer help whenever and wherever it is needed. To start the tracking process is as simple as turning on the application that refreshes and updates your location every 15 seconds. Tapping, shaking or swiping your handset sends an alert to the ADT Monitoring Centre that will contact you and dispatch the appropriate emergency services team to respond. Martin Ochien’g, ADT’s Marketing and Strategy Director, said there is currently no product on the South African market that offers a similar service or range of emergency responders as ADT FindU. He said the use of GPS technology means that the service is not limited to a geographical area because it will work wherever there is cell phone reception. However, active voice connection and sufficient data to is necessary to run the application. “ADT FindU enables the automatic upload of live video and audio to the ADT Monitoring Centre via a smartphone in the event of an emergency. This allows us to assess what is happening and respond accordingly, and not aggravate an already volatile situation,” said Ochien’g. “Once our dedicated Monitoring Centre

Wemmerpan Road intersections: crime hot spot Clr Dennis Jane met with the Visible Policing Head Lt Cor. Govender at Moffatview SAPS to find out where the trouble spots in the precinct. “Many motorists will have noticed that the traffic light poles at the corner of Wemmerpan Road and the N17 off ramp have been vandalised on a fairly regular basis. They are cut off at the base so the thieves can steal the copper cabling. One can only guess what paltry sum it is that the stolen copper yields,

This corner is also one of the precinct crime hot spots for hi-jackings and smash and grabs. “The hi-jackers have a choice of exits, even taking N17E, while the smash and grabbers have three directions they can choose as an escape route. Motorists need to be vigilant. If you see people loitering near the intersection slow down if traffic conditions permit so you don’t have to stop before entering the intersection. Don’t allow yourself to get ‘boxed in’ so you will have room to manoeuvre if necessary. The most obvious way to avoid smash and grabs is not to have attractive items e.g. handbags, tablets or laptops and cell phones in plain sight. Place them in the boot before you commence your journey.

Special votes for 2014 elections

SA votes 2014 As the country prepares to go to the polls in May, South Africa Votes 2014 (an independently funded project that will run throughout the election campaign) intends to add real voices to the swirl of newsgathering, comment, and opinion surrounding the election. Independent journalist and Managing Editor of SA Votes 2014, Khadija Patel (formerly a senior correspondent at the Daily Maverick) heads up a team comprising of journalists, writers, bloggers and social media specialists from all walks of life, ranging from citizen journalists to renowned international South African journalists working for Al Jazeera and The Mercury. Describing the project, Khadija Patel said the SA VOTES 2014 will make politics relevant to South Africans again, “Election season really is an extended silly season. But there is a greater story in this election than a barrage of ‘he said’, ‘she said’. We want to tell the story that goes beyond that, the story of the political

spectacle in South Africa as it’s translated into people’s opinions, their attitudes, and their experience of the country”. “People often get put off by politics, because people and their stories often get ignored by rhetoric and debate, SA Votes 2014 intends to be part of an alternate telling of the South African election story of real stories of real people,” said Patel. One of the features of SA Votes 2014 is to work with young journalists, who will be given the chance to contribute to the debate of South Africa’s future. “We hope to work with these young journalists from all levels of South African society. We will have them tramping around towns and cities, speaking to people and then telling us what they’ve been speaking about. It’s about the people they quote, the people whose story we want to tell. SA Votes 2014 has already partnered with Centre for Fine Art and Animation and Design (CFAD) in Durban. Nanda Soobben, the head of CFAD said he chose to join SA VOTES 2014 because he wanted to become part of a bigger conversation. “I think people are going to waste their vote, and I just want to use my cartoons to show people how to make their votes count without being biased in anyway,” said Soobben SA Votes 2014, an independently funded project, free of any political interests will run throughout the election campaign will be updated daily.

EFF up for election The Economic Freedom Fighters sold berets, T-shirts and posters and gathered donations from members in order to pay the deposit fee to contest the general elections. Julius Malema, EFF Leader, said the biggest donation of R100 000 came from a member who lives in Pretoria. However, the EFF would have to pay the money back after the elections to members who donated, he said. The deposit for parties contesting the National Assembly is R200 000 and R45 000 per province that they contest. Last week, the EFF took President Jacob Zuma, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor, and the IEC to court over the amount. The High Court in Pretoria dismissed the EFF’s application for an interdict relating to the payment of the deposit to the IEC. Not more than 50 EFF supporters gathered

outside the IEC office where Malema, along with Dali Mpofu and Floyd Shivambu, handed over the party’s candidate lists. The three entered the building carrying three cardboard boxes containing the lists. On the lists, Malema said the EFF had submitted a National Assembly list, province to national list, and provincial legislature lists. The party would contest nationally and all nine provinces. “Our list is 99.9 percent gender balanced, it has generational mix and geographical mix,” he said. Malema would not say whether he was the EFF’s presidential candidate or give any indication of who was on the lists. Malema said he was confident his party would be in government after the elections on 7 May. *Source: Sapa

The window to apply for special votes opens on 7 April and closes at 17:00 on 17 April. These applications must be made at the office of the Municipal Electoral Officer, and between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00. By law, you can apply for a special vote if you can’t travel to your voting station because you are physically infirm, disabled or pregnant; or can’t vote at your voting station on Election Day. Please note that applications must be hand-delivered to the IEC offices, but can be delivered by a proxy on behalf of the individual applying. Special voting will take place over two days: Monday 5 May and Tuesday 6 May. The draft calendar indicates that special votes will take place both at the voting station and for home visits on both days. This is a departure from previous years where the Monday was dedicated to home visits and the voting station did not open for voting. This has a massive impact on election operations, party agents should be identified to be present at the voting station on both

days ahead of Election Day itself, and also mobile agents to follow the IEC teams for home visits. There are 22 265 voting stations around South Africa. Voter Queries: • If a voter expects to be overseas on 30 April and not in the country by 7 May, the time for application closed on the 12 March already and he/she will not be able to cast a vote. • If a voter will be in the country on 5 or 6 May, but not on 7 May then he/she must apply for a special vote between 7 and 17 April and vote on one of the special voting days. • If a voter will not be overseas and able to go to an embassy, consulate or mission on 30 April but will also not be in South Africa between 5 and 7 May, then they simply do not fall into any window where we or the IEC can assist. South Africa deserves a better government COPE’s election manifesto at a glance The Congress of the People (COPE) launched their election manifesto on Sunday 9 March. The five year old party’s manifesto reiterates many of the calls which made up the first manifesto which was launched shortly after the party’s establishment in 2009. “In our 2009 manifesto we said that South Africa who are honest servants of the people, with leaders who are honest servants of the people, with respect for growing economy, ensuring sustainable development, educating and training our people for development, improving the quality of healthcare, fighting crime and ensuring safety for all citizens and advancing the African agenda and creating a better world.” – M Lekota (COPE President) Some key points extracted from the manifesto • Direct election of leaders. DA appeals e-tolls judgement The Democratic Alliance appealed the judgement handed down by the Western Cape High Court on 13 March in the party’s case against the unconstitutional passing of the E-Tolling Act. The DA has argued that the people of Gauteng were denied a voice against e-tolling because the law was not debated in the provincial legislature. While the application was dismissed it is significant that both parties will pay their own costs. “We are studying the judgement and will

issue further comment at a later stage. The fight against e-tolling must continue not just in the courts, but also at the ballot box on 7 May. Gauteng deserves a government that is prepared to fight against the unjust system of e-tolling. We are committed to calling a referendum when elected, so that the people of Gauteng can have a voice by voting directly against e-tolls. The fight is still within the people of Gauteng. We must demonstrate our mass opposition to e-tolling on election day,” Mmusi Maimane DA Gauteng Premier Candidate said.

On 21 March we celebrate Human Rights Day in South Africa. Even though this day is spent being grateful for our rights, it still resonates the serious events that took place at Sharpeville on this same day, 54 years ago. On 21 March 1960 South Africa was under the apartheid regime, which was introduced in 1948, after the Nationalist Party came into power. The segregation of black and white people under this regime was enforced by laws that governed and limited the rights of particularly non-white citizens in South Africa. One such law that restricted the freedom of the non-white citizens was the Pass Law, and the Sharpeville massacre was a direct uprising against this law. The pass law stated that non-white citizens were not allowed to travel around or work in urban areas without a pass book. This meant that legally, nonwhite persons could not leave the rural areas without a permit from local authorities. The pass book, which was similar to an ID book, granted persons older than 16 permission to be in urban areas. It was a criminal offence to be unable to present your pass book when required to do so by the police and many people were arrested and thrown in jail for it. On 21 March 1960 the official anti-pass protest took place. The Pan Africanist Congress (a spin-off party of the ANC) planned an anti-pass campaign and the Sharpeville uprising marked the start of the campaign. On 21 March 1960, hundreds of black citizens arranged to gather at the Sharpeville police station without their pass books; to present themselves for arrest. The mob grew unstable and police battled to keep them under control, after which police fire with sharp-point ammunition on the crowd, which included men, women and children. At the end of the day, 69 people were killed and 180 were wounded. In hindsight, this uprising was indirectly an attack on the apartheid regime

This date therefore became iconic in South Africa to represent equality and human rights for all. 21 March was declared a public holiday after the 1994 democratic elections in South Africa, which took place on 27 April 1994. The ANC government, with newly

and democratically-elected president, Nelson Mandela, launched South Africa’s new Constitution on 8 May 1996 and Sharpeville was the chosen venue where the new Constitution was signed (www. southafrica.info). Since then, a number of laws have been enacted to protect basic individual human rights in South Africa.

What are human rights?

According to the website www.parliament.gov.za, human rights are rights that everyone should have as humans. In 1948 the United Nations defined human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It founds basic universal human rights on three pillars: freedom, justice and peace. South Africa supports this declaration of human rights and it forms the foundation of our own Bill of Rights.

20 years of water delivery Take green ownership of our area The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa, together with the Premier of Mpumalanga Province Mr. David Mabuza, officially launch the 2014 National Water Week (17 – 23 March), as well as the Bushbuckridge Integrated Water Scheme in Mpumalanga yesterday. The awareness week campaign has the theme “Water is Life - 20 Years of Water Delivery for Social and Economic Development”. The theme coincides with South Africa’s celebrations of 20 years of freedom and democracy. This year, the Department will celebrate the success of Government’s water delivery programmes and management during the two decades of democracy. This is an important achievement given the backlog inherited in 1994. Two decades ago, around 14 million people did not have access to

safe drinking water and some 21 million people did not have access to a basic level of sanitation. In the 20 years since democracy, the Department has provided water to millions of South Africans with access to clean water. As custodians of this awareness week, the Department of Water Affairs is encouraging all South Africans to focus on the need to restore and preserve the integrity of this most precious resource. South Africans must take responsibility to make sure this scarce resource is managed in an effective and sustainable manner. Remember to report the misuse of water and other faults to the nearest municipal offices or call the Department’s toll free number at 0800 200 200.

Cotlands and SOJO will be hosting a 5km Green Walk awareness campaign on 29 March. The purpose of the walk is to engage with the local community and encourage them to take ownership of their surrounding areas by getting involved in keeping it clean and safe. The event will start and end at Hoërskool Die Fakkel in Forest Hill. PIKITUP have come on board and will be extending their “Trash to Treasure and Sorting at Source” campaign for this month. They will be issuing three different coloured bags to participants who will walk and clean at the same time on the day. PIKITUP’s gig-rig will provide entertainment and an education stall with recyclable craft material. Environmental Health will have an

education stall and the mobile clinics will be present to do blood pressure, blood glucose and HIV status testing. Other local council departments are committed to the initiative in the hope to educate the community about good citizenry. City Parks will be cutting grass, JRA will be fixing potholes and replacing drain covers, City Power will inspect connections and Building Control will monitor building activities. All JHB South residents are invited to register for the walk at Pick & Pay Steeldale or at Cotlands in Stanton Street, Turffontein, where you will receive your goody bag. Entrance fee is R20. Help make our environment safe and clean for our children of the south.

What water is the best water? South Africa’s National Water Week is from 17 - 23 March and while a lot has been said about the quality of water around the country, it should not detract from the importance of drinking adequate water during the day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So while we all know it is important to drink enough liquid during the day, do you know how much and what you should be drinking? Health professionals recommend that women drink eight glasses, or 2 litres of water per day and that men need even more, up to 12 glasses of water per day, 3 litres. Peter Jordan, Principal Officer at Fedhealth, said that we should take care not to drink too much fruit juice, flavoured water, sweetened sports drinks and sweetened tea and coffee. “Rather eat fruit and drink water to get your fluid intake,” Jordan said. “You can always enhance the flavour of water by adding lemon, cucumber slices, mint leaves or pieces of fruit.”

Is tap water as safe as bottled water? According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who oversee bottled water and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who regulate tap water, the two are generally comparable in terms of safety. In other words the choice of tap or bottled is mostly a matter of personal preference. However, the EPA does not regulate private wells so, if your tap water comes from a private well, you should test your water frequently (at least every year) for contaminants. “It is important to note that some people are more vulnerable to getting sick from contaminants in drinking water than others. You may be in this group if you are undergoing chemotherapy, living with HIV/AIDS or have received a transplant. Pregnant women, the elderly and children also may be at greater risk. It is always a good idea to ask your doctor about whether you should take additional precautions, such as boiling tap water or drinking bottled water,” says Jordan.

The southern suburbs of Johannesburg has a long and unique character, often reviled by ‘outsiders’, but cherished by locals. It stems from the unique breed of people, spectacular open spaces and a history that has worked itself into the very grain of the community, often without us realising it. Some of this history is for all to see, but a lot of it is behind the scenes. Some forgotten, some lost with the passing of old-timers and some literally crumbling with the passage of time. Calvin Montgomery, a young gentleman born and bred in the South, has taken it on himself to do something about this tragedy. He founded the Southern Suburbs Heritage Society and has been co-opted onto the executive committee of the KNRA.

Together they will take on challenges with the Sarel Marais farmstead, the SothoTswana heritage, the Vierfontein dam and many more. Marist Brothers Linmeyer, a Catholic coeducational school offering education from pre-primary until high school, is one

of five Marist Schools in South Africa; Marist Brothers Linmeyer, Sacred Heart Observatory (established in 1924) and St David’s Inanda in Johannesburg (established in 1941), St Joseph’s Marist College in Cape Town (established in 1867) and St Henry’s Marist College in Durban (established in 1929).

HPV vaccinations launched in SA schools Amy Campbell

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer among women in South Africa. There is still no real cure for cancer, but one can be vaccinated against the HPV and lower one’s risk of cervical cancer. The South African government has decided to take action against this escalating disease and launched an HPV vaccination campaign across South Africa on Wednesday 12 March. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and the Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty led the official launch at a national event that was held in the Free State last week. The campaign aims to give government primary school girls across South Africa access to the HPV vaccination, in order to lower their risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. According to Dr Ivan Campbell, General Practitioner at the Netcare Clinton Hospital, the HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. The virus forms warts and has many different strands, which makes it difficult to control. When a female is infected with the disease, it can form warts on the mouth of the womb (known as the cervix), where it stays and

On way to Netball World Cup

grows; eventually causing cervical cancer. Anti-viral medicine cannot kill the HPV and one will physically have to have the warts removed with laser treatments. Dr Campbell emphasises that with this virus, prevention is better than cure and he therefore urges parents to consider this vaccination. The vaccine is more effective when one is not yet sexually active, but women in their twenties who are sexually active can ask for the vaccine, just to be safe. Regular pap smears can also help to identify mutating cervical cells caused by the HPV. The HPV vaccination campaign targets girls in grade 4 and there will be two occasions during the year when the Department of Health will give the vaccinations: the first injection will take place between March and April, and the second one will be given in September/October. Schools in each area are currently sending forms home for parents to give consent for the injections. Specific dates for Gauteng schools have not yet been confirmed. Unfortunately the Department is not yet able to offer this vaccine to all the schools and the campaign currently only targets government schools. However, parents whose children attend private schools can see their local doctor to get a prescription for the vaccine.

BESA gives new clothes BESA Leadership Academy recently collected 176 items of brand new clothing for the 63 children at Amazing Grace Children’s Home. The children hardly ever receive clothing that has never been worn before, and the excitement they expressed was truly heart warming. “The children at Amazing Grace have really taught me how we all take so many thing for granted.” Savannah Rogers said. ON THEIR WAY TO THE TOP: Kendra Szeles and Kylie Jardine. Kylie Jardine and Kendra Szeles have been chosen to represent South Africa in the upcoming Netball World Cup 2014, taking place from 24 – 30 May in Fourways. Both sportswomen are from the Meyersdal Arena in Alberton and have been chosen for the U21 national team. Kylie, now a first year student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), started her netball career at a very young age and played for the first netball team at Marais Viljoen High School. She is now coaching the girls under 7 team at Marist Brothers Linmeyer. Kendra, is a learner at Marist Brothers and is vice-head girl for the school. Her sport talents not only include netball, but she also plays for the first water polo team, as well as the first basketball team. Both Kylie and Kendra represented Southern Gauteng at the Inter Provincial Tournament held at the Meyersdal Action Sports Arena from 4 - 8 March, where their team won the Gold. These girls are looking for part or full sponsorships, contact Jackie Jardine on 083 650 3278 or jjardine@telkomsa.net

MOVIE REVIEW:the nut job

By Lance Van Wyk I believe, that there is no greater pleasure than watching a great movie. Even more so if that great movie is on “The big screen” with breath taking 3D scenes and rumbling surround sound. One such a movie that I know of currently on the circuit: The nut job. This animated movie will keep the whole family entertained and will have tears running; either from laughter or from living yourself into the strife of Surly squirrel and his friends. Who knows we all might learn a few lessons from this fable, self worth, sharing, respecting your friends and selfless sacrifice for a greater purpose. You may just recognize the voices of Liam Neeson, Brendan Fraser and Will Arnett. So join the park animals on there adventure as they venture into the city to gather food for the winter, make new friends, stand up to oppression, foil some criminal’s plot and share in their peril and laughter, beware of the sudden twist that you might not expect. I give this movie a 7 out of 10. Thank you very much to Ster Kinekor Eastgate staff for making my movie even better and making my day.

No free ticket to complain

I can live with the pothole By Nieto Hernandez The recent heavy down pour has, according to weather services, broken a 14 year record, this is however no record to be excited about.

the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining

- John F. Kennedy

This past Saturday (15 March) was World Consumer Rights Day. World Consumer Rights Day was established on 15 March 1983 to promote consumer rights around the world. Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman, Advocate Neville Meville said the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) may be there to protect you when you’re buying goods and services, but it’s not a free ticket to complain. He says consumers need to understand they also have responsibilities before laying a complaint against a retailer, manufacturer or distributor. Below is advice from Advocate Meville to consider when shopping: Understand marketing material and contracts Under the CPA, suppliers are obliged to ensure that every notice, document or visual representation of the product must be in plain language. If you don’t understand something, you’re entitled to ask for an explanation before signing, especially if it is a big ticket item such as a house, car or furniture. Always read the fine print before purchasing to save yourself hassle and unnecessary costs, if the contract is in plain language, and you sign, you will be held liable. Prices must be accurate It may happen that the price displayed on the item or shelf does not match the price you’re charged at the till. By law, the supplier is bound by the lowest price displayed, unless it is an obvious error or it has been tampered with. It’s the consumer’s responsibility to first check with a shelf packer if you are unsure of the price and to check the till slip to ensure you’ve not been overcharged. You are within your rights to ask for the lower price. Watch out for exclusions Before signing a contract, be on the alert for warning clauses and read them to find out which risks you will not be covered for before you enter into the agreement. This is because suppliers must bring any risk of injury or death, adverse term or exclusion of liability to the attention of the consumer before they enter into the transaction. Especially look out for highlighted terms in contracts and make sure you understand what’s not covered. Follow instructions While a supplier is responsible for any harm caused as a result of inadequate instructions or warnings about hazards associated with the use of a product, you may have no claim for damages if you haven’t read the instructions or warnings. Always read all the packaging and information booklets before using a new product – whether it’s a washing machine or toy. Beware of on rolling over contracts

It’s easy to simply forget about renewing your television subscription, security services or cell phone contract, but it’s important to read all correspondence sent from a supplier and give notice in time if you do not want the contract to continue. Suppliers must inform you that a fixed term agreement is about to end and will roll over onto a month-by-month basis with or without new terms. Make sure you aren’t being charged extra for services or additions you don’t really need. Beware of grey goods You may be willing to pay less for reconditioned or “grey” goods (imported without the authority of the manufacturer), but then need to accept the increased risk of defects and that there’s no manufacturer’s warranty cover. Read the rules of competitions It’s a real win if you bag a prize in a promotional competition, but you could be disappointed if you haven’t read the rules beforehand and you end up not qualifying. Request the rules from the organiser to ensure that you are eligible to enter the contest and that you are happy with the conditions, such as collecting a prize in a distant location, having to listen to a two hour promotional talk on your weekend away win or having your face appearing in the company’s media campaign. Check the sales record or till slip details Under the CPA, suppliers must provide a sales record or till slip containing a comprehensive list of details. Check the correctness of these details and keep it in a safe place. The sales record is your copy of the agreement and proof of purchase. You will also need it if you wish to return goods, get a refund or ask for defective goods to be repaired. Make sure goods are fit for purpose Consumers are entitled to receive goods that are fit for the purpose for which they are generally intended. If, however, a consumer requires something for a particular purpose. They should ask the sales person if the item is suitable for that purpose and record the answer. The consumer has the right to expect that the goods will be suitable for the specific purpose that the consumer mentioned. Ask for identification All marketing, delivery, repairs or installation employees must wear a badge or provide identification under the CPA, so don’t get duped into buying something from a conman. Be cautious and insist callers or people coming to your premises show you their official badge or identification card. It’s also a good idea to take note of the person’s name for record keeping purposes and if you need to lay a complaint or compliment later on.

The recent rain has been interfering in the daily routine for many Gauteng citizens. Many activities which we often take for granted have over the past three weeks become the subject of careful consideration. After two weeks of non-stop rain many parts of Gauteng have been flooded, with some residents already calling for help from disaster management. This has raised a number of questions in my mind, the leading being; “what is the status of Gauteng’s readiness to deal with any natural disaster?”

It’s no secret I’m a lover of the of the John F. Kennedy quote:” the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining”. In the situation we find ourselves in, Kennedy’s words are a little too late. I mean how much confidence do the states of the roads inspire? My answer is: none at all. I cannot trust that a government, unable to repair a pothole, could possibly be be adequately equipped to deal with the aftermath of a natural disaster. The second question I have is one for the citizen; when are we going to give credit to the government where they have performed? In as much as we have experienced flooding in areas of the province, the flooding is not a trend, in most instances drainage systems have been able to cope with the heavy downpour and that, in my books, deserves at least a mention. Maybe our problem is not the pothole, but the inability to spot government efforts. Take it from a citizen who has not been directly affected by floods, I would rather live with a pothole. Let’s chat, let us know what your experience has been with the weather. Also share some photos with us. email voice@tametimes.co.za or tweet @NietoVoice

nominations Twenty years of musicianship celebrated a number of new kids on the music block dominating the major categories for the landmark 20th Annual South African Music Awards – with some familiar favourites creeping into the running for SA’s most prestigious music competition. The nominees for SAMA 20 were announced amid great excitement and anticipation at Sun International’s Carnival City on Thursday 13 March. The nominees were announced by a panel of artists including, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, Jabu Hlongwane, Mi Casa’s J-Something and Khaya Mthetwa among others. Newcomers; Gangs of Ballet, Naima Kay and Nakhane Touré, are set to rock the SAMA’s with 11 nominations between them. Mi Casa, who are becoming an industry favorite, together with come-back kids; Mafikizolo walked away with four nominations each, both including a nomination for the sought after album of the year award. Also bagging four SAMA nominations are Mafikizolo, whose comeback release Reunited has been crowned with nods for Best Pop Album, Best Collaboration, Duo or Group of the Year and Album of the Year. Roulette Masters: higher stakes

this year’s event will be special in more ways than one: “Not only are we celebrating 20 years of South Africa’s premier music awards, we are also commemorating the country’s 20th anniversary of democracy.” Du Plessis said that as a symbolic tribute to the first democratic elections, which were held on 27 and 28 April 1994, the SAMA 20 awards ceremony will take place exactly 20 years later, on 28 April 2014, at the Sun City Superbowl. As always, all eyes will be on the Record of the Year category, which is determined by a public vote. The nominees for this award will be announced shortly, after which fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite song and artist of 2013. LUCKY LAUGH:Cliff Pinto and Sancha Hein seen at Tsogo Sun’s Roulette Masters launch. This weekend saw the property semifinals of Tsogo Sun’s group wide Roulette Masters Tournament taking place simultaneously at 13 of its entertainment destinations around the country – an event that will culminate in the grand finale at Gold Reef City on 29 March, with one lucky winner walking away with R1.8 million in cash, the highest prize ever in a R100 buy-in Roulette tournament. “The total prize money was originally projected to be R1.7 million, and this has increased by a massive one million rand to R2.7 million over the eight weeks of the tournament as a result of unprecedented buy-in by players around the country. The first prize has increased from R1 million to a guaranteed R1.8 million, reflecting the enormous support the tournament has enjoyed,” Steve Hight, Director of Gaming of Tsogo Sun said. Based on the results of Saturday’s semi-final rounds and unit finals 36 players from seven provinces will be flown to Gold Reef City to participate in the group semi-final, which will whittle the players down to the final seven,

who will compete for the R1.8 million first prize. “This is the biggest ever single prize for a R100 buy-in in a Roulette Tournament. The stakes have got higher and higher each week as every cent of the R100 buy-ins at all 13 properties over the eight weeks of the tournament been returned in prize money, creating more and more excitement among players competing for the top positions on the leader board,” Hight said. Five players from Montecasino, four each from Suncoast, Gold Reef City and Silverstar, three from Golden Horse Casino, The Ridge, Hemingway’s Casino and Emnotweni Casino, two from Garden Route Casino and Goldfields Casino, and one each from Mykonos Casino, Blackrock Casino and The Caledon Casino will win their right to play in the grand semi-final at Gold Reef City on 29 March, based on their scores on the leader board this past Saturday. Emperors Palace Classic offers a taste of Europe

Entries are open for the Emperors Palace Classic, which takes place in Johannesburg on April 12 and 13. The annual cycling weekend attracts over 6 000 riders across the road and mountain bike events. High-speed criterium circuit racing returns to Johannesburg this autumn with the seventh edition of the Emperors Palace Classic. The annual cycling spectacular, which is presented by ASG, starts with the popular mountain bike component on 12 April, and continues with the road and criterium races the following day. Traditionally held in jam-packed February, the bumper weekend was successfully moved to a less congested time slot last year, attracting more than 6 000 riders across all events. Race director Wynand de Villiers said organisers were once again expecting a capacity turnout for the Gauteng event. “This event fills an important niche on the racing calendar and gives riders of all disciplines something to train for before the winter chill sets in.” De Villiers said mountain bikers in the 20km and 40km races would once again experience a little jet propulsion, as the routes crossed the grounds of the OR Tambo International Airport. “They ride parallel to, but at a safe distance from, the runways. The thrill of hearing those powerful aircraft engines is one of the major attractions of this event.” On the road side, he said the 102km feature route would remain unchanged for the fifth consecutive year. “We’ve had lots of positive feedback from riders, so we decided not to mess with a winning formula.”

Last year, David Maree claimed the victory for Team Abantu (formerly Tasol-GT) in a nailbiting three-man sprint to the finish line. De Villiers described the route as “fast, flat and exciting but very manageable”. With more than 100 metro police officers and 200 marshals on duty, he said it would also be one of the safest in the province. For those not up to tackling the full distance, De Villiers said there would be a 50km short course option. The feature races would be followed by the ever-popular Kids Classic for children between the ages of two and eight years. The racing action culminates with the Circuit Spectacular – a 30-minute criterium that sees South Africa’s top roadies burning rubber as they do laps around the top level of the Emperors Palace parking lot. “This is something that any real cycling enthusiast can’t afford to miss. It’s a rare opportunity to see a real European-style kermesse.” Registration takes place at Cycle Lab Fourways on the Thursday (10:00 to 16:00) and at the venue – 64@ The Palace – on the Friday (10:00 to 16:00) and Saturday (9:00 to 15:00). Late entries will only be accepted at registration and not on race day. For more information, contact ASG Events on 076 621 1807 or e-mail eventsupport@asgworld.co.za.

South Africa lands top tournaments South African wheelchair tennis players are making a name for themselves around the world and as a result, two major wheelchair tournaments are to be staged in South Africa next month. US Open quad player Lucas Sithole, ranked second in the world, behind David Wagner of the United States, and South African number one female player Kgothatso Montjane (KG), ranked seventh in the world are two example of the greatness of our wheelchair athletes. It is because of the achievements of these and other South African players as well as the excellent administration of Wheelchair Tennis South Africa that South Africa has been awarded two important tournaments by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The Airports Company South Africa Gauteng Open, to be played at the Gauteng East Tennis Centre at Benoni Lake from April 23

to 27. It is a grade one event expected to draw top international players, who would use the tournament as a preparation for Super Series status carrying SA Open at Ellis Park from April 29 to May 3. “It is a tremendous honour to be awarded such an important tournament,” said Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) general manager Karen Losch. “It is evidence that South Africa has been recognized as one of the powerhouses of wheelchair tennis. We expect stars from around the world to come to South Africa for the tournaments, and we hope the people of Gauteng will come in their numbers to support our players.” As part of WTSA’s outreach program, stars from wheelchair and able-bodied tennis will conduct a special clinic for schools on April 30.

International paddlers to tackle Orange River 68th Jackie Gibson For the first time since its inception three years ago, the Green Kalahari Canoe Marathon will feature international paddlers. Top paddlers from Germany and the Czech Republic will join the highly competitive field of South African competitors to tackle the majestic Orange River from 20 – 22 March. 2010 World Cup silver medallist and 2011 European champion Achim Overbeck will team up with fellow German Tobias Bong, who took the gold in the single men’s race at the 2012 World Championships in France. It is expected that this dynamic duo will definitely add some excitement to this year’s K2 battle in the company of current world champions Hank McGregor, Thulani Mbanjwa and Sean Rice as well as Jasper Mocke, Lance King, Ivan Kruger and Louw Van Riet. Jakub Adam and his sister Anna Adamova from the Czech Republic will make their debut on South Africa’s largest river. Jakub will again pair up with former world champion Cam Schoeman with whom he achieved a podium finish at the recent Dusi marathon. Anna will join forces with former Green Kalahari champion Abbie Adie and this partnership will definitely turn up the heat in the women’s K2 division. Event organiser Gawie Nieuwoudt is delighted by the entry of this international contingent. “This is extremely exciting news and will definitely raise the profile of the race not only in South Africa, but internationally. We already have a strong field of paddlers that is peppered with current world champions in various canoeing disciplines and we’re confident that the

international additions will add a competitive edge. This is also a perfect way to promote the race to international paddlers and to secure global competitors for future events,” Nieuwoudt said. The 99km three-day stage race starts in Upington on, 20 March, and will traverse down the Orange River to the finish line at Khamkirri near Augrabies on 23 March. The race carries a total prize purse of R400 000, one of the biggest prizes for a paddling event in South Africa. For more information, visit www.experiencenortherncape. com or www.gkcm.co.za.

Lions reclaim victory

After a disappointing encounter with the Sharks last week, the Lions have fought back fiercely against the Blues to claim a second victory. On Saturday, 15 March, the Lions beat the Blues 39-36 at Ellis Park and settled in fourth place on the Super Rugby log. The Blues currently rank eleventh. Both teams remained scoreless deep into the first half. The Lions only started their onslaught 30 minutes into the game when Blues player Charlie Faumuina received a yellow card. Faf de Klerk was the first player to score a try in the first half and

after Marnitz Boshoff’s conversion; the home team was soon leading 7-0. Boshoff continued his lucky streak and kicked over a drop goal shortly after the first try. After a quick tap, wing Courtnall Skosan ran with the ball and scored the second try. Boshoff once again converted the try and at half time the Lions were comfortably leading 17-0. The Lions continued strong into the second half, with Boshoff sending another drop goal over the goalposts; and the team scored three tries in total. The Blues slowly gained momentum in

The time has come again for the big hitters and the clever miserly bowlers to showcase their talents in the shortest version of the game. The Indian IPL equivalent, but for your country adds a whole new flavour. My feeling is that the likes of Chris Gayle, David Warner, Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers will certainly feature as the top batsmen, including bowlers Lasith By Craig Norris Malinga, Mitchell Johnson ( if fit), Saeed Ajmal and Sunil Narine. The host’s Bangladesh, as expected easily overcame Afghanistan in the tournament opener on Sunday chasing a paltry 73 runs and winning by nine wickets. The tournament is very open and any one of eight teams can win. The toss of the coin does not really matter here, as the wicket and change in conditions during a game will not really play a role in the outcome of any result. It will be down to the strategy of the team management and the on field players as to who stands up to the situation of each game in going forward to the last stages of the tournament. You would assume that Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be the semi finalist’s, but who knows. Don’t count out the West Indies as they have surprised many a top nation in this format. T20 Cricket is such a funny game, where a certain amount of luck is involved in favoring the brave and in the past, a freak result has caused the downfall of one of the bigger nations. Australia are hoping that star studded bowler Mitchell Johnson recovers fully from his toe injury in time, so that the Aussies can advance to the final in a tournament that they have never won. The Proteas will have their work cut out as they have never really mastered this format. Coach Domingo and his management staff will definitely need to rethink their game plans if this past week vs the Aussies is anything to go by. You can’t possibly have AB De Villiers and David Miller being starved of batting time. I would have Miller open the innings; and bat De Villers at number three. This is a must if we are going to make an impact; and with a bit of luck, the Proteas can overcome their battle to win a major tournament.
