Man found hanging from tree Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za The badly decomposed body of a black man was found hanging from a tree over the stream along Bellefield Avenue, Mondeor on 19 March. He still has not been identified. He was fully clothed wearing a red T-shirt, khaki pants, black shoes and a cap. He had wire around his neck.

A man was walking through the stream and came across the body. He went to Mondeor SAPS to report it. Turffontien Fire Department was called to assist with removing the body.

When tame TIMES arrived on scene City of Johannesburg EMS officers, Gauteng Forensic Pathology Service workers and Mondeor SAPS officers were attempting to remove the body. The process took a while due to the body being inaccessible with it being on the embankment.

Mondeor Sector 2 CPF patrollers were on scene and said that a man had allegedly reported the body a week ago but Mondeor SAPS couldn’t find the body. tame TIMES asked Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson, if any report of this was made in the recent week. “We have had no such reports,” Cst Mnguni said.

First baby for Angels

WELCOMING A PRECIOUS GIFT: Rani Naidoo and Anne Ebrahim with baby Thando.

Angels Baby Sanctuary, situated in Rossettenville, welcomed their first baby on 14 March. Baby Thando weighed 1,8kg and adapted very well according to Angels Baby Sanctuary’s founder Anne Ebrahim.

This day will forever be remembered by the Oakdene resident as her dream has become a reality. “I did a lot of volunteer work and I knew I didn’t want to go back to the corporate world, so I decided to open my own baby home.”

It has been a struggle taking nearly two years to set up but Ebrahim said other baby homes have been very helpful explaining what all is needed to set up an NPO and the processes with government.” Door of Hope even phoned me last week asking if I needed milk or nappies.”

Ebrahim is supported by five other members: Denise Naidoo, Nerisha Naidoo, Reekesh Padayachee, Ronelle Reddy and Colette Premi Pillay.

The premises situated in High Street belong to Ebrahim and the home has been furnished by the kind heartedness of people’s donations. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who made donations.”

Rani Naidoo is the house mother and stays on the premises. Once more babies come in another care taker will be employed.

Ebrahim works closely with Impilo child protection and adoption services which in turn is where Angels will get the babies from. “We are a temporary safe haven for the children until they are adopted,” Ebrahim explained.

More sponsors are needed and the baby home needs a washing machine, tumble dryer and heater. Various fundraisers are taking place for more information on them please visit www.angelsbaby.org.

JSPCA does not do telemarketing

The JSPCA received a call from a concerned resident of Krugersdorp. She received a call on her landline number from someone claiming they are working for the SPCA and it that it was an emergency plea. She was told that if she did not donate immediately the SPCA would close down.

Please do not give your banking details over the phone or deposit any money into the bank account details that you are given during the call. “We at JSPCA (JHB and Krugersdorp SPCA) do not use telemarketing,” Jolene Beyleveld, JSPCA public relations officer said.

If you receive such a call from a person claiming to be employed here, please get as many details as possible for JSPCA to investigate who is using their name to gather funds for their own benefits.

In light of this, if you receive any other calls relating to other SPCA’s in the country, it is advisable that you contact the SPCA concerned directly on their approved contact details to find out if this is indeed valid.

Airing your dirty laundry

I got warned earlier this year about the craziness that is going to happen during the build up to the elections. However this last week has been like an episode of Bold and the Beautiful: betrayal, hate mail and total confrontation. Very entertaining but slightly warped.

I watch with utter amusement what is happening in our local political parties: Clr Bev Turk resigned from the DA to join the ANC and then Manny De Freitas’ response referring to her as rubbish (Pg 3). Is this really happening? It feels like I am on Facebook reading stranger’s dirty laundry.

When I got this news and announced it in the newsroom the responses were ‘well that should make for an interesting story’ with another person saying ‘how can you call another human being rubbish?’

Yes it certainly does make for an interesting story and the timing is perfect just two months short of Election Day. Now I can imagine the hurt one could feel when a fellow member leaves for an opposing party but is it necessary to now publicly slander that person? Why weren’t those issues brought to the public’s attention when Clr Bev Turk was in the DA? I honestly don’t want to offend anyone here or get on anyone’s bad side but I am most probably going to as I am talking politics and basically that is what it comes down to.There is so much politics in politics.

I want to know tame TIMES readers’, do you know who you are going to vote for?

Goodbye DA, hello ANC ANC, thank you for sweeping Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za Last Tuesday marked a very crucial day in the world of local politics not only did Clr Bev Turk(ward 57) resign as a DA member but so did two other ward councillors; Dot Corrigan(PR Clr) and Alison Van Der Molen(ward 118). To add salt to the wound they have joined the ANC. tame TIMES spoke to Clr Turk a few days after she handed in her resignation. “It has been a long time coming. I have not been happy for the past three and a half years.

However the way it has happened has not been pleasant,” she said.

Clr Bev Turk has been servicing the communities of La Rochelle, Regents Park, Moffatview, Rose Acres, South Hills, Elands Park, Tulisa Park, Linmeyer, City Deep and Heriotsdale for the past 11 years. “I wasn’t a councillor only for DA supporters I was a councillor for everyone who stayed in these areas,” Clr Turk said.

Due to her resignation from the party she has lost her seat in the DA and is no longer the ward councillor for these areas. When asked who will take over from her, she said Clr Dennis Jane will most probably oversee the ward.

“I want to thank the DA for giving me the opportunity of working within the community.

Through this I have gained maturity, wisdom and gotten a lot of insight in how the DA party operates,” Clr Turk said.

When asked what attracted her to the ANC, she explained they have a good story to

tell and have helped a lot of people over the last 20 years. She mentioned how pensioners have benefitted from the housing development, especially in Moffatview, however she did add “It’s happening but not as quickly as it should do.”

Turk has appreciated the warm welcome that she has received from the ANC and would like to thank Elaine Hanero for assisting with the process.

Without trying to be sarcastic or funny in any way, I would like to sincerely thank the ANC for taking an ex-DA councilor away and swallowing her (and soon to be spat out) into their fold. I feel simply saying thank you to the ANC isn’t enough.

In particular, I refer to Bev Turk, now exward councilor for ward 57. For months now our internal DA legal processes have been trying to get rid of her as there were a number of racist allegations against her.

Time was imminent in that our Federal Legal Commission was going to declare that she contravened our codes and was to be expelled from the DA. Turk herself knew she was guilty, otherwise why would she be looking all over the South for a job? Thanks to the ANC, this process has been sped up as she’s now instantly gone (I have no doubt that the ANC have promised her a job). Thank you ANC for making it effortless for us. In Turk’s mind she is now secure in the consistently corrupt ANC; how delirious can one get.

Racism allegations surrounding Bev Turk is nothing new as one can search articles that

demonstrated her racial prejudice and disrespect to people in general. The shocking state of her ward is a clear demonstration showing how she did little for her community. She was consistently lazy and I had to frequently get her to actually get work done. Needless to say she didn’t like this and I wasn’t very popular with her.

As of a few months ago, as Member of Parliament for the area, I instituted some internal processes that are ensuring that the ward gets back to a standard acceptable to residents as Turk had done nothing all this time. Now that she’s out of the way, we can get a competent councilor put in to serve the community at the level that they deserve.

The desperation by the ANC is obvious, in trying to discredit the DA, which they know will win Gauteng in May. They are prepared to take anyone, no matter how bad, incompetent and lazy they are to present to the public a façade of success and growth. The opposite is true. With such people in their ranks, the ANC will only continue on a spiral of failure that they are already on.

HAPPY TO LEARN: A Cotlands toy library member plays scrabble with SAfm Lifestyle presenter Michele Constant.

South African celebrities as well as soapie stars competed in a spell-down on 15 March to raise awareness for Cotlands and its goal to improve early learning opportunities for vulnerable children in SA. Hip-hop star HHP’s team came out victorious with a total score of 3406 after two 20 minute games.

Initiated by one of the most distinctive South African voices, HHP, the celebrity scrabble challenge sponsored by CNA, Mattel and Fourways Mall was an educational and fun success. Six celeb teams took part namely 7de Laan, Muvangho, Rhythm City, Kaya FM, HHP and SA FM. A group of children, who use Cotlands afterschool toy library facilities, also competed in the challenge teaming up with the various celeb teams.

“It’s our fourth year of the scrabble challenge.

For me it is a fun way to highlight an important issue facing our country. We need to get children playing games that will help develop them into the caring, intelligent, problemsolving citizens that our country needs,” said HHP. “This was simply too good an opportunity to miss,” said Liby Nel, 7de Laan’s Publicity Coordinator. “What a privilege it was to make our small contribution towards the development of the next generation into all they can be. We would like to thank our fans for their loyalty and support, proving that together we can make a positive difference.”

The game also took on a fundraising element as fans got to vote for their favourite team via SMS. Each R10 sms was donated to Cotlands.

Lucky draws and in-mall challenges also raised funds for the children’s organisation.

SANBS rewards their loyal donors Amy-Mae Campbell

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held their annual blood donor awards ceremony for Egoli East on Saturday 15 March, at Gold Reef City Casino. A total of 70 donors received milestone awards for their loyal contribution to the lives of many who are in dire need of blood.

According to Delene Duncan, Egoli Zone Donor Services Manager, SANBS values every single donor’s contribution beyond words. The award ceremony is a way of thanking the community for their support and to remind them of how much they value each donation.

Duncan explained that it is important for them to reward their donors in some way to show them that their loyalty is much appreciated: “We must acknowledge our donors; we need loyal donors, as they are the safest donors.

It motivates them [to continue donating],” Duncan said.

The awards were categorised into ten different donating milestones, which are calculated according to the amount of blood units that a donor has donated. A milestone is awarded for every 25 units of blood and one unit equals 500 ml of blood. All the donors who have donated 20 units of blood before the age of 25 received the Club 25 award, and further awards were given for every 25 units from the 50 milestone onwards. The donor who donated the most out of everyone who attended the ceremony was Jacob Conradie, who started donating blood in 1962 and has been donating every year since. Conradie reached his 275th unit milestone this year, which took him 52 years to achieve. In total Conradie has donated approximately 137,5 L of blood. Conradie received the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek medal for his lifelong contribution.

The theme was ‘Live, Love and Laugh’ and guest speaker, Debbie De Jager, a certified John Maxwell Coach, explained that in order to achieve these three valuable ingredients of life one has to have a good attitude. She added that attitude is an expression of what is happening inside of the person- their inward feelings. Her main emphasis was that a bad

attitude affects the person who has it more than anyone else.

De Jager gave advice on how to change your attitude. She said you have to evaluate your present attitude by identifying wrong thinking, feelings, behaviour and clarify a positive attitude and commit and carry out your choice.

Secondly you have to have an attitude of gratitude and one must write a statement of purpose and have a desire to change.

The charity of choice was Door of Hope Children’s Mission. They are a Glenvista based home for abandoned babies and are giving children a second chance at life.

Carmen Pretorius, the operations manger explained their new Piggy Bank project, where

they are selling beautiful animal shaped piggy banks, is to raise funds for another property.

This property will be a children’s village where they will house toddlers who are waiting for adoption and children who are classified as unadoptable due to various ailments and conditions.

Due to limited space in their current houses they have to turn away babies and with the adoption process taking much longer because of the new childcare act, babies are with them for much longer periods of time.

Two local ladies recently launched a new initiative called “Art Uncorked”, which provides anyone with a keen interest in art with a platform whereby they can start to explore their artistic side.

The first event and launch took place on Friday 14 March.

I read with interest Phillip Venter’s response to my article that appeared. I was a little taken aback at his comments as we have met on a number of occasions to discuss service delivery and other council issues.

Councillors in Region F have a forum meeting attended by various officials both from the region, council departments and managers from the various municipal entities. The meetings are planned to be held quarterly but this seldom happens. The previous meeting was on 30 October and the data quoted was contained in the agenda for the meeting on 4 March. Its source was complaints from the public and those reported by the Urban Inspectors (UI) attached to each ward within the region and recorded on the SAP system.

What Venter should find interesting is the new table I have supplied that deals only with

issues reported by the urban inspector for ward 56 (Part of La Rochelle, Rosettenville, Townsview, The Hill + Exts, most of Linmeyer, Oakdene, Eastcliff and Glenanda North) and compares calls logged with the number resolved.

The concept of Urban Management was introduced into the City a few years ago. The specific purpose is to improve service delivery.

The theory being the UI monitors service delivery issues. Issues not resolved within the agreed response time are then escalated. The expectation, improved service delivery that a World Class African would be proud of. Did it work? The results speak for themselves.

Maybe Venter should approach the Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau and ask him why the City is disintegrating all around us as can be seen on a daily basis.

Concerned widow’s writes: We are widows from different walks of life. We all made application to the metal industry(MIBFA) and all received letters stating the amounts that was due to us from our late husband’s surplus provident fund. Later we were told that we do not qualify because our husbands died before 2008.

That brought us to the conclusion: we need to get all the widows together and demand what is rightfully ours. How can the metal industry issue letters with amounts and later tell us there is no money for us? What happen to

our late husbands’ contribution?

Our plea is to get all widows whose late husbands were in the metal industry together so we can get what is rightfully ours and what our husbands worked for. Clr Smit: embarrassment to DA Party Brian Holmes writes: Recently there has been much comment in particularly from the DA regarding the handling of constituency complaints.

Their vaunted response was the number of referrals by the party obo complainants to local council departments for processing.

Forgive me for being unimpressed with this insignificant contribution. The complainant may just as well have couriered or e-mailed the department direct.

During the seventies and early eighties the Glens ratepayers association under the chairmanship of a Mr. Noel Geber was fortunate to have been served by a dynamic councillor Rodney Janit who would arrange a meeting with the complainant to procure a comprehensive picture of the problem and discuss and agree on the way forward.

Thereafter he would communicate with the ratepayer, informing him of developments with the relevant department in resolving the problem.

Contrast this procedure with a recent interaction between our Body Corporate and Councillor Paul Smit concerning an adjacent “Problem Property” in the Glenvista environs.

Firstly there was no acknowledgement by him of the initial referral communication by the Body Corporate which necessitated a follow

up with him when he confirmed per SMS having referred and discussed the matter with Town Plannin. No notification from the clr of the name of the official and any indication of either the content of the discussion and/or prognosis around resolution of the problem.

Two subsequent communication requests from the Body Corporate for progress updates have been ignored by the Councillor.

It is noteworthy that this matter was initially referred to Clr Paul Smit by the Glenvista Community centre obo Body Corporate as far back as 09/12/2009 who at the time informed the Body Corporate by way of feedback that “To this day we have not received any acknowledgement of receipt from the councillor.” The correspondent added the hope that someone takes the community organisation seriously in wishing to take ownership of the area.

This ineffectual [ read having no effect ] performance by a DA councillor must surely be an embarrassment to the party and an even more disturbing reality worth considering is that he does not take his constituency seriously. Suffice to conclude that this tardy modus operandi would have warranted dismissal if employed in a corporation.

Ignorance is costly and nature doesn’t forgive

R225m of tax payers’ money later, almost ten times the original R27m budget for the security upgrade at President Zuma’s Nkandla home, ignorance seems to be the best defence the citizen will be afforded.

Even the public protector’s report seems to be subtly leading South Africans towards an understanding that ignorance can be a valid excuse for mismanagement of resources intrusted into ones care. I understand that it’s still early days and many citizens are still trying to wrap their heads around the 447 pages of a carefully worded report.

I must say I don’t for one second buy the ignorance about the knowledge that money was being spent outside of regulations, but let say it was true that the president didn’t know the affairs relating to his own household – how then would this give us confidence that he can diligently oversee matters relating to the running of the country?

Maybe I’m overly critical but really at the level of State President, claiming ignorance doesn’t give me comfort, in fact it scares me because ignorance cannot save you from falling, all ignorance can do is cause you not to anticipate an obstacle and ultimately worsen the fall.

Our president, as a man who knows the state of government procurement, as a man who played an integral role in the establishment and even headed the moral regeneration campaign, as a man who claims to be a leader committed to the irradiation of corruption within state departments should have had a more hands-on approach especially since this is his home which was to be upgraded to the tune of twenty seven real million rands, he could have at least delegated one of his wives to act as project manager.

Our nature as South Africans is to make a huge noise about a matter until the next issue distracts us and steals our focus, so believe me when I say: soon Oscar will reclaim the spotlight. The nature of nature though is unforgiving – in nature the scars remain with you and this is a scar we will carry with us for long. The scar will even out live us, as Madonsela suggested when she said “A number of the items installed by the DPW, such as the safe haven, swimming pool, paved roads and walkways as well as water and electricity supply, will require lifetime maintenance at cost to the state.

Some maintenance costs may transcend the President’s lifetime.”

Where there is 14 children injured smoke, there is fire One adult and 14 children were injured when a taxi collided with a light motor vehicle and a truck on Jan De Necker Avenue, Naturena on 14 March.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find the taxi and truck on the side of the road. Upon their assessment, paramedics discovered 15 people were injured, 14 of those being children, their injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Paramedics immediately started their treatment, immobilising five of the children on spine boards before promptly transporting them to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Bystanders on scene stated that the taxi had apparently tried to skip traffic on the sidewalk before colliding with a light motor vehicle and truck.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Three suspects were arrested for theft of copper by City Power officials on 12 March.

The City Power officials were patrolling in the Booysens area when they noticed black smoke coming from an open piece of veld.

They investigated when they saw two unknown males coming from the direction of the fire.

When the approached that area, they noticed that the suspects were busy burning the rubber off copper cables.

The suspects was caught and brought to Booysens SAPS where they were placed under arrest.

Copper thieves nabbed

SMASHED: The taxi smashed straight into the truck.

Brave attempt to save grandmother and sister Two children sustained minor injuries when they were hit by a light motor vehicle on Stanford road in Turffontein on 16 March. The one child (6) noticed the oncoming vehicle and attempted to push his grandmother and sister out of harms way.

ER24 paramedics responded to the scene to find the two children sitting with their grandmother on the sidewalk. Paramedics feared the worst, but were relieved to find both the patients suffered only minor bumps

and bruises.

ER24 paramedics treated and transported the young female child while other services transported the six year old. Both were transported to Baragwaneth Hospital.

Witnesses on scene said that the light motor vehicle had apparently tried to overtake in oncoming traffic before swerving onto the pavement and colliding with the children.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property by Booysens VISPOL Policing on 10 March in the Nasrec area.

While doing patrols in the Nasrec Area, the VISPOL members noticed a vehicle that was driving recklessly. They decided to pull the vehicle over to search it. While searching the vehicle they found two bags containing copper strips and thirty bundles of copper wire in the boot.

The occupants of the vehicle were arrested and brought to Booysens SAPS for further investigation.

Family survives morning collision Three people were injured on the morning of 17 March when their vehicle was t-boned on Rifle Range Road, Glenanda.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find the family of three sitting on the side of the road in “shock”. Paramedics immediately observed the patients (two adults and one child) who sustained moderate injuries.

All three patients were immobilised on spine

boards before transportation to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Witnesses told paramedics that the child was ejected in the collision, which occurred when another vehicle apparently swerved into the oncoming lane and t-boned it, causing it to overturn.

The cause of the collision is not known and investigations are underway.

Glenny advises to wear a helmet Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Netcare in conjunction with The Glen Shopping Centre put the spotlight on helmet safety on World Head Injury Awareness Day on 20 March when Netcare Union and Netcare Milpark hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Centres visited Mondeor Primary.

An educational talk was give by Netcare’s Shaun Groom where he used eggs to demonstrate how you can get can an head injury if you don’t wear a helmet. He also taught the 2-V1 helmet salute. Glenny, The Glen’s mascot was by his side and got the children very excited.

This forms part of Netcare’s Trauma Injury Prevention (TIP) programme.

Officials sentenced for corruption The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, welcomes the sentencing of seven officials for fraud and corruption at the Booysens, Hamberg and Supreme private vehicle testing stations respectively.

The seven are part of the 27 officials who were arrested in 2012 following an investigation by a task team set up by the National Department of Transport in 2011 which comprises of ATS Africa Consulting, SAPS Commercial Crime unit and the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.

The establishment of a task team came as a result from complaints received from whistle blowers of fraud and corruption in the issuing of roadworthy certificates in vehicle testing stations around the country.

The Booysen Vehicle Testing officials are Mapule Baloyi (31), Thembinkosi Ngwenya (34), and Manuel Maathavan Nagan (43).

They were sentenced on the 14 of March to two years imprisonment with an option of R20 000 fine.

The amount involved in all three cases is

estimated at R4 800 000, and the department is in consultation with the Department of Transport and Asset Forfeiter Unit of the South African Police Service to do the following; • Blacklist their practice number in order for them not to find employment in the same environment again.

• Seizure of property “I applaud the law enforcement agencies involved in the arrest and ultimately sentencing of these perpetrators and stopping them in their tracks. This demonstrates our unwavering zeal to root out fraud and corruption more especially in pursuit of ensuring safety on our roads.

This will go a long way in sending a strong message to other officials that we don’t tolerate corruption and we would not hesitate to act harshly to anyone who commits such heinous crime. By issuing a fraudulent roadworthy certificate they are putting other road users’ lives in danger,” MEC Mazibuko said.

T-codes project: addressing technically faulty meters Johannesburg Water has appointed five contractors to assist as well as address problematic meters across the city over a period of four months.

The objective of the contract is to ensure the effective and efficient metering of water being supplied to customers. Johannesburg Water recognises that when customers’ meters are in operational conditions at all times it will allow for accurate consumer consumption monitoring and billing. Meter installation and maintenance will also assist Johannesburg Water to be able to record water flow data and improve the quality of the water demand and conservation strategy.

The scope of the work that will be conducted by the contractors will include: • Replacement of leaking/ faulty meters and valves • The raising of meters which have become buried • Locating meters which have been labelled “unable to locate” • Where meters are located within customer properties, these meters are to be relocated to the outside of the customers’ property to allow easy access to Johannesburg Water meter reading staff • Meters scheduled for replacement will be exchanged with above ground meters, to ensure that meters do not become buried in the future

Residents can rest assured that areas where work is conducted will be reinstated to the state that it was previously and that any new installation which is reported as being faulty, will be repaired by the responsible contractor.

This project will curb the recent spike in the number of reported stolen domestic meters.

The meters that are targeted are the old version one and contain little metal value.

With the replacement of the meters through T-codes project, general pvc (plastic) meters are used.

Residents should take note that the above mentioned contractors will have identification tags with them and should not let people into their homes who do not have identification tags.

Mighty Men Conference Joburg a success

It seems that the communities in Johannesburg, including the South, have finally woken up to the excellent accredited value of Papillon’s courses.

The Mighty Men Conference Joburg was authorised by Angus Buchan on 8 July 2013 to be the official Mighty Men Conference for the Johannesburg region.

The original Mighty Men Conferences took place seven times on Angus Buchan’s Farm Shalom in Greytown, Kwazulu Natal.

The final two, held in 2009 and 2010, each attracted between 200 000 and 300 000 conference goers.

With all the rain over the past few weeks, the organisers could not prepare the farm where the event would have taken place. At 4:30pm on Wednesday, just over a day away from the start of the event, Dawie Liebenberg, one of the MMC committee members, took the committee to an equestrian centre not far from their waterlogged campsite. The centre has an indoor arena that can seat 1 500 people.

“We spoke to the owners and they said we could use it with pleasure. Everything just started working out and things started falling into place,” he said.

The Mighty Men Conference Joburg took place from 7 – 9 March. Despite the rain, men from all over Johannesburg attended the gathering and although only 224 guys attended on the Friday, they experienced

God’s presence all the time.

On Saturday around 260 men attended and on Sunday families joined in the worship and more than 400 people were present to experience God’s grace.

Victor Lemmer, host of MMC Joburg, said the experienced team from the Karoo Mighty Men Conference supported him and his team “from the word go” and only left late on the Sunday afternoon.

He was also blessed by the support, prayers and encouragement of the convenors of the Karoo MMC and Bushveld MMC, Jannie Moolman and Francois Brits, respectively.

“To Angus Buchan, Ronel, Bruce and Jilly from MMC Headoffice, for your input, support and prayers – thank you. We could not have done this without you guys.

The support was just amazing and everybody just pulled their weight. The MMC Joburg Committee was just great and with very little sleep we pulled through. What a great bunch of guys!”

Mighty Men Joburg would like to thank every person for the services and financial contributions. Lemmer also confirmed that there will be another MMC next year. But the name of the event will change to MMC Gauteng.

A male dog was rescued on 18 March from an abandoned house in Mondeor by the team effort of Michelle Pelser, Clr Peter Stewart, Werna Henning, Martin Barber and the JSPCA. According to Michelle Pelser from Sector 2 Mondeor CPF SAPS area, Clr Peter Stewart informed her of the dog that was locked up with no food or water. “Residents had called him as they were worried about the dog,” Pelser said.

Pelser with the assistance of Martin Barber from SOS Security went to the house and met Henning, a Sector 2 member. She called the JSPCA to come out. The dog was taken into JSPCA’s care.

“I personally would like to thank the residents that brought this to our attention, Martin and Werner for assisting and JSCPA for responding quickly and assisting.

Non-profit organisation, Cotlands has begun a massive immunisation campaign that will see hundreds of children screened and treated for TB. As an organisation that puts the rights of children first, Cotlands has undertaken to assist government with a TB campaign, by screening children. Last week they focused on the following areas: Eldorado Park ext 3, Princess Mobile Toy Library site, Selby Mobile Toy Library site, MBV building ELG and Bellavista.

26 March- City Deep Village from 8:30 to 10:30 27 March-South Hills from 9:00 to 11:00 What is TB? Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

TB primarily affects the lungs, but it can also affect organs in the central nervous system, lymphatic system, and circulatory system among others.

The disease was called “consumption” in the past because of the way it would consume infected people from within.

When a person becomes infected with TB, the bacteria in the lungs multiply causing pneumonia; the patient experiences chest pain and has a persistent cough which often produces blood.

In addition, lymph nodes near the heart and lungs become enlarged. As the bacteria try to spread to other parts of the body they are interrupted by the body’s immune system.

The immune system forms scar tissue or fibrosis around the bacterium, which helps fight the infection and prevents it from spreading within the body and to other people. If the bacteria manage to break through the scar tissue the disease returns to an active state; pneumonia develops and there is possible damage to kidneys, bones, and the meninges that line the spinal cord and brain.

TB is generally classified as being either latent or active.

Latent TB - the bacteria are inactive but present in the body. The patient has no symptoms and is not contagious.

Active TB - the bacteria are active and make the patient ill. Active TB is contagious.

TB is a major cause of illness and death worldwide, especially in Africa and Asia.

Joy and remembrance at Kholvad Centenary The Anjuman Islamia of Khovad, popularly known as Kholvad Madressa, will hold its Centenary celebrations at a gala function on 30 March 2014 at the UNISA complex in Ormonde, Johannesburg.

The Kholvad Organisation was established in 1895 in Krugersdorp and held its first Annual General Meeting in 1914, in Johannesburg, where it established itself as The Madressa Anjuman Islamia of Kholvad (MAIK). Young Khovadians from the Village of Kholvad in the district of Surat in India came to South Africa just prior to the turn of the century, in search of a new life. They immediately formed a committee to meet the needs of the new immigrants and to support their families in the village in India. From these humble beginnings, the Kholvad committee of 1895 grew steadily to form a Trust in 1914 and has grown in to one of the most successful “village” organisations in South Africa.

The Madressa has a proud history of service, not only to the Kholvadians, but also in the struggle against the repressive legislations of a succession of South African Governments and the abominable Apartheid regime.

The Madressa provided support for the struggle against the past oppressive governments through some of their stalwarts such as Dr. Yusuf Dadoo, Goolam Pahad and Salim Saley. The Kholvad House building, recently declared a Heritage Building, is situated at Market Street in Johannesburg and was built in 1946. This building was the venue of many meetings of the leadership of the ANC, the Transvaal Indian Congress, as well as the Transvaal Youth Congress.

When working as an attorney in Ferreirasdorp, the late President Nelson Mandela spent much time consulting with clients in Flat 13 at Kholvad House, which

was occupied by Ahmed Kathrada. Many meetings of the ANC took place in the Board Room of the Kholvad House.

Much of the work on the Freedom Charter was done in Kholvad House, including the signing of the historic doctors Pact in 1947 between Dr Dadoo of Transvaal Indian Congress, Dr Xuma of the African National Congress and Dr Naicker, of the Natal Indian Congress. This Pact set the goals and fostered cooperation of their respective organizations.

Kholvadians from India, Reunion, Mauritius, Canada and the United Kingdom will come to meet their families in South Africa to celebrate and honour those that have served the community in all walks of life for the past hundred years. A Centenary Brochure is produced which records the sacrifices made by fallen heroes from its midst such as Ahmed Timol and Babla Saloojee, both of whom gave their lives in the fight against oppression.

The gala Centenary Celebration will be a time for both joy and remembrance of the remarkable contribution that Madressa has made over the past century by giving bursaries and welfare aid.

The Madressa also made and continues to make grants to South African communities that face hardship and disasters, irrespective of colour and creed. In the past, the Madressa also funded legal battles when the communities were faced with eviction, under the notorious inhumane legislation of the Group areas act.

The Kholvad Madressa has formulated policies to continue this service to its community members as it faces new challenges of a growing democracy.

POLO FEVER: Finalists of Turffontein’s Triple Crown Competition can’t believe their luck, two more Polo Vivos are up for grabs, the next being 29 March at the Classic Carnival.

Another 10 finalists will be drawn on 29 March at the second leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown; these finalists will be another step closer to driving home in a brand new Polo Vivo. Turffontein Racecourse plays host to the Classic Carnival which is expected to draw large crowds and sees numerous traditional carnival themed activities complimenting the top class South African horse racing.

The growth in the Triple Crown series has been partly due to the organisers ensuring a variety of family focused activities, competitions with large prizes and mostly due to their decision of making access to the race course free of charge. Michael Varney, National Marketing Manager of Phumelela commented, “Each leg of the Triple Crown has been themed and after the success of the first leg which featured the Johannesburg Prawn Festival we are very excited about the Classic Carnival and of course the second of three Polo Vivos which we will be giving away”.

simply being at the Big T race goers will be able to enter the competition to win one of the three Polo Vivos.

From a racing perspective both the second legs of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and SASCOC Triple Crown will be run and first leg winners Arcetri Pink and Louis the King will be fighting it out in their respective fields to get a step closer to taking the Tiara or Crown title. Trainer Geoff Woodruff and jockey Robbie Fradd enjoyed huge success as the winning trainer and jockey of both these races and so the pressure must be mounting.

The inter-provisional competitiveness will be rife when L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Cape Town Noir travels to Gauteng to compete for the Horse Chestnut Stakes only adding to the premium racing the day has to offer. Finally, this is also a special weekend for some of South Africa’s exported thoroughbreds who will be racing in the Dubai World Cup to be broadcast on a big screen for spectators to enjoy.

The Lions proved that they must not be underestimated when they beat the Reds at Ellis Park on Saturday 22 March. The Reds were comfortably leading 20-6 at half time, but the Lions fiercely fought back in the second half and won the game with a tight score of 23-20.

Reds player Quade Cooper was a force to be reckoned with and scored all the Reds’ points within the first 40 of the game. He scored two tries, made two conversions and kicked two penalties for the Reds. The Lions, however, scored most of their initial points through penalties and scored their tries only in the 63rd and 77th minutes of the game.

The Lions’ first opportunity to score a try arose when they won a penalty and kicked for touch. Their decision raised some concern among the spectators as this was the fourth

time that they could have gone for the posts. However, the Lions won the line out and set the maul up, which disintegrated to their advantage. Lionel Mapoe got the ball shortly after and scored the first try. Courtnall Skosan scored the second try after the Lions won a line out in the 77th minute. Marnitz Boshoff converted both tries.

Referee Stuart Berry caused uproar when he awarded two yellow cards to Reds players Albert Anae and Jake Schatz in the second half, among other penalties.

This caused controversy as it seemed as though the referee was one-sided. SAPA quoted Reds coach Richard Graham saying: “The penalty count was 19-4 against us, I dont think I’ve ever been involved in a game where the penalty count has been like that. Certainly we will be speaking to Lyndon Bray, the referee’s boss, to get clarification.”

The Lions are currently ranked fourth on the combined Super Rugby log and the Reds rank tenth.

OFF THE PITCH

Yesteryear T20 Specialists I have watched the first week of the World T20; and wondered whether the top cricketer’s from the eighties and nineties would have adapted and competed with the top players of today in the shortest version of the game.

I am convinced that the players from yesteryear would certainly have challenged the players from today. Going back twenty to thirty years, we were quite happy with cricket then and would have quite

As I mentioned in a previous article regarding One Day Cricket in the eighties, 30 runs off the first ten overs in a 50 over game was acceptable and a great start to say the least. The modern version of T20 Cricket has given a different thinking and approach towards the current 50 over game, including Test Cricket.

Batsmen are continually improving on their strike rates; and who knows what will be a respectable start to a T20 game in the opening power play of the first six overs in the future, let alone Test an ODI Cricket. On average the last three or four over’s in a T20 game arguably now goes for 50 plus, but in time going forward, we could see twelve to fifteen an over in the first power play.

Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Lance Klusener, Brian Lara, Mark Greatbatch; and Jonty Rhodes to name but a few, are my selection of players who would have matched this and won many games for their country. In an ideal world, it would be great to make comparisons but, alas it is not the case.

Last week I mentioned how important it was to make sure that our top batsmen in the current World T20 faced as many over’s as possible; and again it proved costly in the Proteas loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday. We are now chasing the eight ball and I firmly believe that AB De Villiers and David Miller should open the Proteas batting.
