Kwanele with crime

Kwanele (Enough) section in Katlehong is well known for service delivery protests and high crime rates reported in the area. In a recent incident that resulted in the murder of a male suspect aged between (25-30), the police were called by the residents and informed of a business robbery happening in the area. On arrival the police found the community chasing the four male suspects for robbing a tuck-shop. Three suspects managed to flee the scene and they made a chase of one suspect. The police stepped out of the vehicle and helped with the chase and when the suspect saw that the police were closer, he started shooting at the police. The police returned fire and shot the suspect while he was trying to jump the fence at Sakhile informal settlement. He fell on the toilet hole and the paramedics declared him dead. He is not yet identified and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with some rounds of ammunition. An attempted murder case was opened against the deceased suspect. Captain Mega Ndobe, Communications officer of Katlehong police station, said,

house and business robbery and theft are still a challenge in the area. “The rape cases are decreasing in the area. We are appealing to the residents to report any criminal activities happening. They should also identify the strangers coming in their area to terrorise and rob them. The targets are people going and coming from work and we urge the victims to open cases so that perpetrators can be arrested,” said Captain Ndobe. One of the concerned residents, who wanted to remain anonymous said, “Service delivery protests are caused by the fact that we are not getting the services that are supposed to be rendered to us. Crime is caused by unemployment; a lot of youth are not working ending up indulging in drugs. This result in youth to be involved in criminal activities namely house breaking and robbery to buy drugs. The other challenge is that the councillor is not cutting the long grass along the bridge between Kwanele and Siluma were most of the criminal activities are happening.” Tebogo Maama, ward councillor for Kwanele section said, “House breaking, theft and

Unemployment cannot be an excuse for people to indulge in drugs and ending up committing crimes such as theft to sustain their drug habits. The municipality is arranging to install extra high mast lights in the area to help people walking at night. We also encourage the community to work with the police by reporting crime and some becoming patrollers.”

cook out competition at Chris Hani mall on Saturday 29 March. People who are interested to participate in the competition should visit the mall on the day. The event starts at 9:00 am and ends at around 12:00 pm. There will be a lot of great prizes to be won and people should not miss this opportunity of showcasing their cooking skills. The schools are closing tomorrow; the learners and teachers are going for a break after a long tiresome term. We encourage the learners not to forget to study and have fun during the holidays. They should also partake in community activities such as joining the soccer clubs and registering for the Easter soccer tournament to be hosted by Eden Park Local Football Association. On our soccer page we have interesting news about six karate athletes to compete in Japan and Kathorus Rollerblades Club are also to compete in national championship. We have another story where children who are interested to swim are invited to Thokoza swimming pool for free lessons. Children should not miss this life time experience of learning how to swim. Tisetso Training Development Company, in partnership with Tsohang Youth Project, hosted a business plan and entrepreneurship workshop at the Katlehong skills centre to empower local entrepreneurs in business. The workshop was attended by local and neighbouring township entrepreneurs. It was aimed at helping them in the development and understanding of business plans. Isaac Mavuso, Director of Tisetso Training Development Company and facilitator of the workshop said, “Most people don’t know about business plans, they think business is all about money. A business plan is a guiding plan for a vision of a business. Most of the business plans are done but they won’t work because they are done with the purpose of fundraising.” He said it helps to have a system such as a business plan in place as it guides the entrepreneur on their business idea, goals and vision. Mavuso urged entrepreneurs to develop their own business plans. “Normally entrepreneurs go to consultants to do business plans and they don’t even engage in it. Business people must develop a culture and sense of being an entrepreneur. It will then be easy for them to save and think as entrepreneurs. They have to bring ideas and move faster with their thoughts as business requires speed,” said Mavuso.

Isaac Mavuso, Director of Tisetso Training Development Company lecturing the entrepreneurs on the importance of having a business plan during the workshop. He also encouraged entrepreneurs to be disciplined and be determined to prosper in business. “Talent alone is not enough in business, it needs to be capacitated with discipline, action, determination, intact with speed to achieve your dreams and goals,” he said. For more information about the business workshops contact Mavuso at 011 860 4373 / 078 568 8726 or e-mail: itmavuso@ gmail.com.

Organisation seeks donations Charity Moyo

Inkateko Community Organisation, based in Zonkizizwe zone 5, is appealing for donations of resources to assist in rendering their services to the community. The organisation is registered as a nonprofit organisation and caters for vulnerable children and orphans. It has a day care centre that cares for 27 children. It provides a soup kitchen twice a week at the two clinics in the area. The organisation also has a sports development, and arts and culture programmes for the community. The organisation is appealing for donations of prefab structures (Zozo), electrical installations, blankets, couches, food, kitchen equipment (such as a stove and fridge), computers, toys and food gardening seeds. Michael Lebotse, the Manager of Inkateko Community Organisation said, “We have one Zozo that we use as a class room and when it is raining the water leaks through. We end up moving the children to the container kitchen. The children are overcrowded in one Zozo; we have three classes being taught in one (Zozo) class.” Michael said there is no electricity on their premises and they can’t afford the necessary installations. “We are currently renting electricity from the neighbours for the soup kitchen and for cooking food for the children. It is a big challenge to operate a centre without electricity. The services that we render are

HPV vaccinations launched in SA schools

Destitute learners recieve school shoes

Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer among women in South Africa. There is still no real cure for cancer, but one can be vaccinated against the HPV and lower one’s risk of cervical cancer. The South African government has decided to take action against this escalating disease and launched an HPV vaccination campaign across South Africa on Wednesday 12 March. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and the Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty led the official launch at a national event that was held in the Free State last week. The campaign aims to give government primary school girls across South Africa access to the HPV vaccination, in order to lower their risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. According to Dr Ivan Campbell, General Practitioner at the Netcare Clinton Hospital, the HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. The virus forms warts and has many different strands, which makes it difficult to control. When a female is infected with the disease, it can form warts on the mouth of the womb (known as the cervix), where it stays and grows; eventually causing cervical cancer. Anti-viral medicine cannot kill the HPV and one will physically have to have the warts removed with laser treatments. Dr Campbell emphasises that with this virus, prevention is better than cure and he therefore urges parents to consider this vaccination. The vaccine

is more effective when one is not yet sexually active, but women in their twenties who are sexually active can ask for the vaccine, just to be safe. Regular pap smears can also help to identify mutating cervical cells caused by the HPV. The HPV vaccination campaign targets girls in grade 4 and there will be two occasions during the year when the Department of Health will give the vaccinations: the first injection will take place between March and April, and the second one will be given in September/October. Schools in each area are currently sending forms home for parents to give consent for the injections. Specific dates for Gauteng schools have not yet been confirmed. Unfortunately the Department is not yet able to offer this vaccine to all the schools and the campaign currently only targets secondary schools. However, parents whose children attend private schools can see their local doctor to get a prescription for the vaccine.

Tshabalala Primary School learners benefited from school shoes donation.

Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The Methodist Church of Spruitview recently brought smiles to the faces of 20 impoverished learners from Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong when they were given school shoes. The school Head of Department teacher Ngaka Mile requested the donation on behalf of the destitute learners. “One of our congregation members Ntokozo Ngakane volunteered to raise enough funds to purchase 20 pair of shoes for the learners valued between R3000-R3500. This initiative happened for the first time at our school and is aimed at helping the needy,” said Mile. Ngakani welcomed the opportunity to assist the needy learners from Tshabalala Primary School. She said the request came at the right time while she was wondering which school to help this year. Ngakani further requested a list of shoe sizes of the beneficiaries and later delivered shoes at

school. She is renowned for sponsoring the impoverished within Ekurhuleni. Speaking to tame TIMES, the school Principal Busisiwe Mndaweni expressed their gratitude on behalf of the school for the sponsorship. She said the donation came at a right time as various parts of the country are engulfed by rain lately. “Some of the learners came to school wearing torn shoes. We view this initiative as a morale booster and an eye opener about the harsh realities experienced by some of our learners daily. Prior to this initiative, we used to buy destitute learners’ school shoes at a large scale. However, we hope this newly formed partnership will not go unnoticed,” said Mndaweni. The 14-year-old Steven Mhlanga was excited that his name was amongst the school shoes initiative beneficiaries. “These new school shoes give me confidence to progress further with my studies and instrumental in building my self-esteem,” concluded Mhlanga.

This 1 day prayer fixed my marriage and financial problems. One day I was reading the newspaper when I saw J Brown and decided to call her to help me out of the misarable life I have been stuck in for 25yrs. Youth urged to be self-determined Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za Future Choolo, a 23 years-old from Moshoeshoe section in Katlehong is saying that the youth should be encouraged to spread their wings by seeking and inventing opportunities. “In most cases youth want to be spoon fed. We don’t want to go to school and get educated. We sit at home not seeking practical experience from the technical colleges that offers free bursaries. We blame the government and the society for our failures. The government don’t owe us anything, we have to work towards achieving our dreams and stop blaming others,” said Choolo. She said unemployment is a worldwide crisis; the youth should start small businesses such as spaza shops, salons and street vending. “We should start somewhere and as long as we have vision we can achieve whatever we want. Dreams are lived not dreamt,” she said. Choolo is currently studying a diploma in Financial Management at Ekurhuleni West College Kathorus Campus. Her short term dream is to become a Project Manager and long term is to become an entrepreneur and run a logistics and events company. “I like logistics because everybody needs transport, I will be able to sustain my

business. I am passionate about being an entrepreneur,” said Choolo. She advises youth to have a passion for money, to know who they are and where they are going. Choolo said it is not easy to prosper in life, it requires hard work commitment and passion. Choolo’s hobbies are socialising with friends, playing games and puzzles. She enjoys eating ethnic food such as samp and tripe.

Drivers to manage time to avoid accidents

Zakhele warns people to manage their time and avoid being late for work.

Happy Khumalo happy@tametimes.co.za Future Choolo encourages youth to work hard to achieve their dreams.

Time is very important in every aspect of life. Zakhele Gumede from Zonkizizwe says timing is everything, especially to drivers, in that they should wake up early and prepare to go to work in time. He said most of the accidents are caused by speeding because someone will be late for work. Zakhele said time management is important to drivers and passengers. He added that passengers should also refrain from telling the drivers to speed up because they are late. What car do you drive? White, Polo classic 1.4 Model 1998. Why the colour white? It is a common colour and I call my car the white horse.

Tells us why you love your car? It is efficient on fuel consumption and has big boot space for my luggage when travelling. Any special features added on your car? Yes, I have put 17inch rims on, but everything else is still standard .Maybe in the near future I will also install a powerful sound system. Do you have traffic fines? Yes, for not wearing a seat belt. Is there any long distance you have travelled with your car? I have been from Johannesburg to Mpumalanga. What advice can you give to the new drivers? They should refrain from using cell phones while driving. They also need to learn to overtake while it is safe to do so and not to drink and drive.

He said it is also played on Voice of Wits FM and University of Johannesburg FM. “The single is a way of expressing the hard work that we implement when doing our work .It is sending a message to people that they should not take us for granted because of where we come from.
