Celebrating the life of a hero Monica Supra
monica@tametimes.co.za The inevitable tragic loss of former president Nelson Mandela struck South Africa on Thursday 5 December at around 20:50. The country went into a state of shock and mourning as the news broke of the death of our first democratically elected president just before midnight. tame TIMES went to Madiba’s house the following day to capture how people from Gauteng experienced the country’s loss. The atmosphere on 4th Street at Houghton Estate was one of celebration of the 95-yearold’s life. People arrived from all over to light candles and place flowers at the shrine outside. “Who will inspire us now?” a teary woman responded when we asked her what her favourite memory of Madiba was. South Africans of all ages and races sang songs in the icon’s honour. “It was a privilege to experience this with so many people,” said tame TIMES Online Editor Miguel Abrahams. “My favourite memory of Madiba is the moment he handed the Rugby World Cup to Francois Pienaar when we won it in 1995. It was a fantastic moment,” said Johan Potgieter from South Crest. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family during this time. For full details on memorial services in honour of Madiba, visit www.tametimes.co.za. We would like to invite the public to leave a message and light a candle in his memory outside our office at 91 Michelle Avenue. May you rest in peace Tata Madiba.
