Team hope spreads Christmas spirit Two Hawks cops implicated in the kidnapping and attempted murder charges that Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir is facing have been arrested.

Warrant Officer Samuel Modise Maropeng (41), nicknamed Saddam, and Warrant officer Machache George Jeff Nthoroane (46) were arrested at the offices of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit on 26 November and

appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on 27 November.

Prosecutor Victor Nkhwashu represented both Maropeng and Nthoroane and applied for an order granting Maropeng access to medical attention while in custody because his wrists were injured.

It was also requested that Maropeng receive medical attention for his hypertension and

asthma. Magistrate Joel Martini granted the order. The case was postponed till yesterday for a formal bail application where they are set to appear alongside Krejcir and Desai Lupondo. Cornerstone worship team made the Christmas carols a special evening.

Man killed in Germiston collision A man was killed following a collision involving three trucks and a bakkie in Germiston on 21 November.

According to ER 24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson, a truck broke down on the N3 highway at the M2 split.

Three other vehicles collided into it.

A truck collided into the back of the broken down truck, followed by a bakkie that crashed into the second truck.

A third truck collided into the back of the bakkie.

“Sadly the driver of the bakkie was killed, while his brother who was sitting next to him suffered only minor injuries,” Jackson said.

The driver of the broken down truck sustained critical head injuries and both patients were transported to hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Cornerstone Church held their annual Hark in the Park on Sunday. The day was filled with spending quality time with family and friends and the most of all remembering what Christmas is all about, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The magical event started at 16:00 where families could enjoy a picnic outside while browsing the market. Children could visit the farm yard and jump all their energy out on the jumping castles. The event is in support of local social initiatives overseen by the Ukwakha Isizwe Foundation – which includes hArt Ghontjie, a project that seeks to encourage and uplift underprivileged youth; hArt Educare, which aims to benefit, support and educate underprivileged youth; and the hArt Day Centre (in Primrose) which provide young children the opportunity to receive early childhood development. Other initiatives include Joshua House, a home for abandoned babies, and the Russell House foster home.

The Chirstmas carols kicked off at 19:00 and once again the Cornerstone worship team had believers singing along and in awe of their passion and musical ability.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police are stepping-up road safety operations during the festive season in an effort to reduce fatalities on the roads.

The EMPD will be taking a zero tolerance approach with regard to drunken driving and reckless driving, un-roadworthy vehicles and revellers bent on causing mayhem by way of visible and proactive enforcement throughout the festive period.

Road safety is the responsibility of all road users. Motorists are implored to ensure that their vehicles are fit to be on the road and that they possess valid documentation. Cyclists are encouraged to wear safety headgear and pedestrians are advised to desist from jaywalking and using the freeways and to wear visible clothing at night.

I must admit, with the news of Kenny Kunene’s political party, which was launched in Cape Town on the weekend, I had to fight the urge to comment about the political butterfly. What I did however decide to share a thought on is the way in which, given an opportunity, Christians will turn on Christians claiming to defend a so called freedom of expression.

I myself do not listen to Gareth Cliff’s morning show (actually I listen to nothing he says) because I find him shallow and obnoxious, but I was interested in the discussions on social networks addressing (mostly ridiculing) a listener for speaking up against what she believed was a watering down of the meaning of Christmas by replacing Christ with Cliff. At first glance nothing seems wrong with the Cliffmas Carols, but my judgment changed after spending a little more time actually thinking about it. Firstly, Gareth as a selfconfessed atheist, should have no business messing with occasions observed by Christians. Secondly, as a country that allows for freedom of religion, I believe one’s right should not infringe or act in a way that could seem as disrespectful to another’s.

The above though is not my biggest problem, my problem is with the Christians who failed to defend their so-called beliefs, siding with a guy who can hardly back up an argument without resorting to childish antics of making fun of the challenging view.

What this incident made me realise is that the line will continue to be pushed because Christians continue to allow themselves to be desensitised by the systematic disrespect aimed at discrediting Christianity. I used to ask myself why malls, airports and other public facilities have Muslim prayer rooms, I now think I have an answer. We would never see Muslims ignore even the smallest of questionable slip-up.

Krejcir wins bid to be hospitalised

Accused in plot to kill Krejcir released The National Prosecuting Authority said that Brendan Harrison, who was accused of being involved in a plot to kill Radovan Krejcir, was struck off the roll on 28 November.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Phindi Louw, Brendan Harrison was provisionally released by the Germiston Regional Court.

She said the State had asked that the case be postponed.

In an appearance in October, Harrison’s lawyer, Jack Gerber, asked that evidence against him be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision on the merits of the allegations.

He said the defence had found discrepancies in the evidence against Harrison, but would not elaborate.

Harrison was a cashier at Krejcir’s gold exchange shop, Money Point.

Harrison claimed he started to receive threats shortly after taking the job. He then cut all ties with Krejcir and his associates, and left for Swaziland to start his own business.

Harrison was arrested while on a business trip in South Africa.

This case of the alleged plot to kill Krejcir is a different case to the one where he survived a bizarre hit on his life outside the Money Point store in August and the most recent bombing at the same store.

SUSPECT PROTECTION: Armed forces outside the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

The South Gauteng High Court ruled that Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir be taken to a private hospital to receive urgent medical treatment.

Lawyers contacted the court late on 24 November, stating if Krejcir was not admitted into hospital he could suffer from organ failure.

The controversial businessman was arrested on 22 November on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping.

Security was of the highest order at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. The court was cleared and journalists were forced to sit outside while Krejcir appeared inside.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that the building needed to be evacuated and barricaded by armed forces because of an unspecified security threat.

Krejcir’s case has been postponed till yesterday for formal bail application.

Krejcir’s co-accused has been named as Desai Luphondo.

Recently the fugitive’s Money Point shop was bombed. Two of Krejcir associates, Ronny Bvuma and Jan Charvat, were killed in the blast.

The fugitive has survived an attempt on his life when a remote controlled shotgun opened fire on him in August earlier this year.

Another two associates, Veselin Laganin and Sam Issa were killed on separate occasions in October.

Krejcir has been in the headlines in recent weeks after several of his associates were killed in separate incidents in Bedfordview.

Krejcir is fighting to avoid extradition to his home country, where he has been charged in absentia on a number of counts, including tax fraud and other charges.

WELCOMING: Banner welcoming home rescue fighters.

Spirits were high at the Ithembelihle LSEN School in Primrose on 23 November, where Team Hope organised their 2013 Christmas Party.

The incredible initiative managed to entertain, feed and gift 500 children, staff members and community volunteers.

A pleased Arveen Singh, founder of Team Hope stated, “We had an exciting event, emotions were high and the atmosphere was tuned into the Christmas theme. The day was spent with children’s laughter and smiles, waiting in anticipation of what was next to come.”

“The team leaders and volunteers worked in unity, integrity and excellence. Well done to all that were present and able to assist. The results were successful and our goals were

achieved,” Singh added.

The Team Hope initiative was launched last year and they have been changing the lives of the less fortunate since then.

According to Singh, he and his wife were doing Bible study and were returning from a mission trip when the idea sparked. When they returned they wanted to do one more good deed before the end of the year and they started making food hampers and created a treasure box project for the less fortunate.

“We have no red tape. Team Hope wants to go out and help who they can,” Arveen says.

The goal of Team Hope is not just to supply basic needs to the less fortunate, but also to educate and council and thereby provide a foundation to grow upon.

Family members and loved ones waited in anticipation at the OR Tambo airport for the arrival of the SA Rescue team to return from the Philippines following typhoon Haiyan.

The team of 45 firefighters, paramedics and doctors from Ekurhuleni, City of Johannesburg and ER24 rescue fighters were deployed to the Philippines to lend a hand in the relief efforts.

The team managed to treat more than 700 people.

Local firefighter Hennie Malan was delighted to be home to see his family.

“I am glad that we could make South Africa proud by helping the people of the Philippines.”

ER24 Rescue team representative Peter van der Spuy stated, “it is very nice to be welcomed home. There was lots of devastation and we faced difficult circumstances, but the mission was a success.”

A grateful ambassador of the Philippines, Constantia Vingno said, “We are thankful to Rescue SA and the Department of International Relations and Co-operation for sending assistance during this trying time. It’s the first time we have experienced a typhoon this strong and it has caused massive devastation.”

Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on 8 November, leaving more than 5000 people dead and even more homeless.

Money Is being rich a sign of God’s blessing?

Mainstream culture equates affluence with God’s blessing and some Christians even think that way. There’s a general thought that if you’re rich, God has blessed you – which basically means that if you’re poor, God has overlooked you.

Jesus came to give us true joy. He came to show that God cares about the poor and he doesn’t overlook anyone at all! In fact, the poor are dear to God’s heart!

DA opposing e-tolling again Patrick Monyobo

patrick@tametimes.co.za The DA recently put up another billboard on the N3 highway near Germiston. The billboard reads a vote for DA is vote against e-tolls.

Musi Maimane, the DA spokesperson said, “We urge motorists to vote for the DA to put a stop to this daylight robbery.”

The DA feels that the bill was incorrectly tagged and should be declared unconstitutional. When asked how long they intended to keep the billboards, up he said, “As long as we can.”

The billboards have angered transport minister Dipuo Peters, who said “it was the work of cowards”.

“These people don’t have the decency to acknowledge what the ANC government has delivered in this country. They want to focus on one aspect and turn an important infrastructure of the economic hub of South Arica into a gimmick,” Peters said.

In October the party put up a billboard that read e-tolls proudly brought to you by the ANC. On 7 November the DA announced that it would file papers with the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, to contest the constitutionality of the e-toll legislation signed into law by President Jacob Zuma.

On 8 November the Freedom Front Plus, Agricultural Union Tau, and National Taxpayers Association filed court papers to have the legislation declared unconstitutional.

Both parties stated that it’s government’s

responsibility to make roads easier and safer to travel in the province, and that the e-tolling system will affect the competency of the province government and municipalities by affecting public transport and traffic regulations. The e-tolls system has come into effect today on Gauteng’s highways.

Many Gauteng motorists are yet to register with the e-tolling system, some made it clear that they will not pay for e-tolls. Motorists without e-toll accounts, or day passes, have a seven-day grace period to pay from the time they passed a gantry.

Non-Gauteng residents to pay e-toll if they use roads *Issued by SANRAL.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) welcomes the announcement by the Minister of Transport that tolling on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) begins today.

People who do not live in Gauteng do not have to pay for the upgrading of the highways in that province. However, if they travel on the tolled Gauteng roads, they will have to either obtain an e-tag and register it or get a day-pass.

The application of the user-pays principle is authorised by law and has been carefully considered in the construction of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) and in many other instances, as a matter of policy by the National Treasury, in collaboration with other departments and agencies of state.

“There were a few funding methods the Government considered in funding the GFIP. One was the much touted fuel levy, which was found to be unfair and unsustainable in the long run.

“The fuel levy is a nationally raised tax that is not paid to SANRAL but accrues to the national fiscus. The money that SANRAL does receive from the national fiscus is used to maintain, operate, and upgrade the non-tolled national roads in South Africa.

“It would be inequitable to expect all road users in the country to pay for heightened levels of road services in Gauteng while they do not enjoy the benefit of similar roads in their provinces.

“After careful consideration Government decided to use the other funding model, which is what the users of the inner Gauteng highways will have to pay.

“The user-pay model is sustainable over the

long term and fairer - if you do not use the upgraded highways, you do not pay,” explains the communications manager of the South African National Road Agency (SANRAL), Vusi Mona.

However, the user-pay principle kicks in for all who use the tolled roads, even those who do not live in Gauteng but have to travel through the province or have business within it.

“This is best done by either paying toll fees at an e-toll Customer Service Centre within seven days of using the roads or obtaining a day-pass. A day-pass cannot be bought at a retailer but through three other easy options,” says Mona: - Via the e-toll website - www.sanral.co.za - Going to a conveniently located e-toll Customer Service Centres - in some shopping malls and along the highway itself - Phoning the e-toll call centre at 0800 SANRAL (726 725).

For those motorists who will be visiting Gauteng for extended periods, especially in the anticipation of the upcoming holidays, SANRAL would like to encourage you to obtain an e-tag and register an e-toll account.

This is the tag enables you to pay the lowest possible e-tag toll tariff. Should you not have an e-tag or be registered, the higher standard toll tariff will apply.

If you are not a Gauteng resident, the e-tolls will not affect you in any way except for the occasion that you do have to use them, says Mona.

“Also, the tolled roads are only 201km in a province that has a road network of more than 3000km and there are plenty of alternative roads in Gauteng,” he says.

Transport Minister Dipou Peters announced that the e-tolling system will be launched today, yet Sanral’s own statistics show that the majority of Gauteng motorists are yet to purchase e-tags.

Sanral has released a figure of 1.4-million unsold e-tags, meaning over the past three years only 679 100 e-tags have been sold. tame TIMES conducted a survey on its Facebook page regarding the acquisition of e-tags; see the results on the questions asked below.

Don’t believe the hype The figure Sanral had provided on the number of e-tags which had been sold was a ploy to create the impression that people were flocking to purchase them, said Outa chairman Wayne Duvenage.

“Sanral have yet to confirm how many actual individual road users have purchased an e-tag, which we suspect is a much smaller proportion of total e-tag sales,” he said in a statement.

He said the figure provided by Sanral, that 700 000 e-tags were sold, included large fleet operators, banks, car rental companies, government fleets, and leasing companies.

“We simply don’t believe their rhetoric in this space,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, Sapa made enquiries about the number of e-tags sold to individuals, the number sold to government departments, and the number sold to companies. By 16:00, Sanral had not responded.

“They have misled the public before and we are convinced they are doing this again to create false impressions of acceptance of their system. The simple truth is the public are not taking this lying down.”

Outa has said it will soon release details of its strategy on empowering society, including providing motorists with knowledge about their rights, and legal advice.

Duvenage said Outa would provide legal counsel and a legal team to the first person summonsed for non-payment of e-toll bills.

“This first case will be the test case,” he said.

“Until then, Outa urges the public to exercise civil courage and know that it is not only their right, but their duty to resist and reject a law which has been implemented in a manner that works against the best interests of the people.”

Abramjee attackers Bedfordview resident gunned down nabbed swiftly The SAPS have arrested three men, aged between 22 and 37 years old, for a spate of house robberies, burglaries and hijackings around Pretoria. This includes the house robbery of Yusuf Abramjee, Head of Crime Line, on 22 November.

Abramjee, his wife and son were surprised by the gunmen who entered their home after jumping a wall. The robbers demanded Abramjee’s car and a shootout ensued as they drove off.

Following intense police investigations, a multi-disciplined task team arrested the suspects in Atteridgeville on 25 November.

The SAPS team comprised of DPCI, National Investigation Unit, various cluster tracing units, the Gauteng Flying Squad, reservists and Erasmia SAPS. Investigators from Tracker assisted.

Police recovered three hijacked/stolen vehicles (a Mini Cooper, Nissan 1400 bakkie and an Audi RS4) at the homes of the suspects.

Earlier, police seized a Mercedes Benz C class stolen in Laudium and Abramjee’s BMW, which was taken at gunpoint.

Two illegal firearms and ammunition were seized during the police operation. Police confiscated several items either used during robberies or stolen by the suspects.

The breakthrough came after the team followed up various leads following Abramjee’s robbery. This included CCTV footage. The

police also received tip-offs from Crime Line and Crime Stop.

Two of the suspects were arrested at the Attlyn Mall in Atteridgeville. Follow up operations led police to the third suspect.

The men are facing charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen property and extortion. The extortion charge relates to an attempt to buy a docket from police. Police seized cash from the two suspects.

“We congratulate the team for the hard work and the breakthrough. These suspects are being linked to several cases in the Pretoria area and more charges could follow. We expect to make more arrests. This is once again an indication that policing cannot be done by the police alone and that we need community participation in it. Investigations are at a very sensitive stage,” said acting Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Lesetja Mothiba.

Abramjee has welcomed the swift police action. “We must now ensure that the suspects are convicted and punished. The police have been most professional in their investigations.

I have been told they will oppose bail. We at Crime Line thank the public for passing on information anonymously. It appears this gang is linked to scores of cases and we urge the public to continue blowing the whistle on criminals,” Abramjee added.

A Bedfordview resident, Hui-Ching Yu was gunned down while driving in Kensington.

According to ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson, paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was already deceased.

Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed that the incident took place, saying, “The man unfortunately died. We cannot say currently how he died as this will be revealed by the autopsy.”

Eyewitness Saadz Asvat told Beeld that two men got out of a Golf, shot at the BMW driver, took three black bags out of the boot, and fled.

Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said it was not

known what was in the bags. He said there were six bullet holes in the driver’s side of the BMW. It is alleged that the two men in a VW Golf, with no number plates, shot at the BMW X5.

The BMW lost control and went through the fence of the sports field of Jeppe High School for Girls in Kensington.

The man killed was believed to be on his way from the Diamond Centre in the Johannesburg CBD to Bedfordview, where he lived with his aunt.

Police are investigating a case of robbery and murder.

Car thieves tech up

Suspect arrested in Alrode with the device that landed him in a jam.

Police apprehended a suspect in Alrode for apparently trying to sell a signal jamming device. Warrant Officer BG Bowlers (National Investigations Unit) explained to tame TIMES that this device, now outlawed, was being used to block the signal that vehicle tracking companies rely on to pinpoint the whereabouts of their clients’ vehicles.

The specific device that the suspect was apprehended for is a medium power handheld (size of a regular mobile phone), has four antennas and can wipe out all mobile signal within 15 meters.

According to Government Gazette 24123,

of November 2002, the use of this and other similar devices is illegal in South Africa. Bowlers explained a successful conviction would carry a minimum of 6 months imprisonment and a maximum fine of R1million.

Parlotones endorses HIV/ AIDS immunity project The 1st of December marked the 25th anniversary of World Aids Day. People around the world come together to remember and mourn those who succumbed to the epidemic. Over the past 25 years, more than 25 million lives have been lost globally to HIV/AIDS, but remarkable strides have also been made in halting the disease’s progression.

World AIDS Day, which was embraced by the World Health Organisation to raise awareness and support, is an opportunity to take stock of the epidemic’s scope and the everyday impact of the virus. What better way to do this than by reminding ourselves of the often alarming numbers involved.

The Immunity Project vaccine is the first to be developed that doesn’t contain any living or non-living virus, giving it the potential to be among the safest vaccines ever developed.

The festive season is looming, bringing with it the promise of a bonus or 13th cheque for many South Africans in formal employment. But, before you count on having that cash in your holiday budget, make sure that it is guaranteed to you under your terms of employment as stated in your contract.

With many South African companies battling to be profitable in a tight economy, employees can no longer take their bonuses for granted unless they are specifically entitled to a 13th cheque. Just because you received a bonus last year, doesn’t necessarily mean you will get one this year or that it will be as large as it was in earlier years. Study your employment contract and company policy to understand what you can expect before you spend money you may not be getting.

Bonus or 13th cheque, what’s the difference?

The terms 13th cheque and bonus are used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. A 13th cheque is a bonus that the employee can expect with certainty if this is part of his or her employment contract. A bonus is a reward based on the employee’s performance and the performance of the business.

How do organisations determine whether to pay bonuses and how big these should be?

Your employer will usually look at two major factors, depending on your employment contract: • Your performance Your boss might look at your performance appraisal or whether you have met targets, such as a sales target, to decide whether you should get a bonus.

• The organisation’s performance The company’s management team may look at how well your branch, department, or the organisation as a whole has performed to decide how much your bonus should be. For example, managers might look at whether income or production targets were met.

What rules must the company follow in deciding whether to grant bonuses or not?

No employee has a right to a bonus under South African labour law, unless it is stated in your employment contract.

Whether or not a bonus is paid or not is governed by the following: • Your individual contract of employment might specify that you’re entitled to a 13th cheque or a bonus that depends on your performance or the performance of the company you work for.

• The company’s policy might outline which employees are given bonuses and how the value of the bonus is determined.

• Bonuses might be paid because of established practice, or “custom and practice” as lawyers might call it.

What does this mean if you are not granted a bonus this year?

If you are taking a new job and you are promised a bonus or 13th cheque as part of your package, be sure that this condition is in your employment contract before you sign. If your company has followed the company policy or the terms of your employment contract, you will not be able to contest its decision not to give you a bonus.

But if your employer breached your employment contract when it paid no bonus or a low bonus, you may be able to take legal action. If bonuses are paid because they have become “custom and practice”, the non-payment of the bonus may fall under the definition of Unfair Labour Practice. The reason for this is that it might be seen as a change to terms and conditions of employment.

How should you spend your bonus?

With South Africa’s culture of easy credit and consumerism, many South Africans blow their bonuses on a new TV, gifts for the family or a holiday. By all means, treat yourself, but also save most of your bonus to service debt, especially if it is high interest debt like a personal loan with a bank or to pay for expenses such as school fees and clothes that are due in the month of January. If you get rid of interest-bearing debt now, you’ll be in better financial shape to enjoy the holidays in years to come.

Epworth hosts carols by candlelight It is that time of the year again when we start getting ready for the Christmas season and Epworth children’s village was on the front foot with this regard.

Epworth children’s village hosted their second annual Carols by Candlelight.

Families joined in on the festivities to enjoy an evening of carols and entertainment under the stars. Attendees could also partake in the in the night market that was set up.

The children enjoy various other forms of entertainment such as jumping castles, face painting and games.

The event was held in an effort to promote and raise funds for the Epworth children’s home.

Yellow Yorker conquers Bright colours were the must-have on Saturday at the Sansui Summer Cup, hosted by Gauteng and held at Turffontein Race Course. The brighter, the better - the bolder, the braver. Fashionistas, both men and women, dressed to the nines to conquer this year’s theme ‘Colour to Conquer’. With the picturesque weather of clear, blue skies, the variation of colours stood out magnificently.

However it seems yellow was the brightest and fastest colour. Jockey Anton Marcus, kitted out in yellow, with his horse Yorker won the 2013 Sansui Summer Cup; making

Organiser Mark Sham’s hard work and dedication in creating an event that everyone in the South could be proud of definitely paid off.

With numerous competing events happening on the same day, the event was well attended. Upon walking through the gates you were guaranteed to see someone you know as locals all swarmed to celebrate the talent that the South has to offer.

Set in the South’s hidden gem, Rietvlei Zoo Farm, festival goers enjoyed the beauty of the natural wetlands, large willow and oak trees and beautiful green gardens accompanied by the mixes of local DJs.

The setup of Deep in the Woods was spectacular – with one main stage and a big area leaving lots of room to fully appreciate the incredible tracks the DJs were pumping from the decks. The main stage was surrounded by an array of food and drink tents and intimate spots for relaxing under the trees for a more chilled atmosphere.

DJs such as Vin GrooVin, Electric Mafia, Dirty Pogo, House Knights (HK), HouseHold Funk, Ricardo Da Costa, Craig Massiv and Ridiculousnes had fans dancing to electro tunes from midday till midnight and left them wanting more.

The South needs more successful events of this kind. I am excited to see what Sham will cook up for the next event.

Parklife exceeds expectations In their second annual festival, Parklife organisers went above and beyond for their festival goers, making it one of the most enjoyable festivals of the year.

Headlining act Seether, who made their way back to tour South Africa once again, had their local fans swarming to the main stage, singing along to their greatest hits.

The band spoiled fans with a more acoustic performance, which went down well with fans as the sun started setting on the Sunday afternoon.

In support of the tour, Seether will be releasing a career retrospective Greatest Hits double CD, which includes a collection of their greatest songs along with three new tracks, rare b-sides and live tracks.

Local artists such as Shortstraw, Desmond and the Tutu’s, Matthew Mole, Jeremy Loops and numerous Electro DJs once again did not disappoint the regular and new festival goers, keeping them entertained all day on the four stages set up at Marks Park in Emmarentia.

St Benedicts boys touring South African Museums.

The St Benedicts grade 8 and grade 9 pupils have enjoyed the last two weeks of embarking on their annual History excursions. The grade 8’s went to the Military Museum and grade 9’s went to the Apartheid Museum. This opportunity to experience history tangibly proved invaluable and the tours were enjoyed by both grades immensely.

The grade 8’s were able to gaze upon a variety of weapons, ranging from aerial darts to modern tanks and everything in between.

These weapons were used in the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Border Wars.

The grade 9’s visited the Apartheid Museum, which gave them a chance to reflect on the past that they never directly experienced but still feel the effects of today. The humbling process of passing though doors that read

“Whites Only” or “Non-Whites Only” gave the learners an opportunity to consider how life was for millions of South Africans during Apartheid.

Seeing weapons used by the police and photographs of the resistance not only gave them useful information about our country’s past, but gave them a chance to reflect on how far we have come since 1994.

The learners were also asked to participate in a simple task that represents our constitution: boys are asked to remove a painted stick from a pile and place it in a crate, each colour representing a different branch of our constitution.

Many said this was a moving experience as they saw fellow classmates choosing different or similar sticks, showing what they felt was the most important aspect of our constitution.

Die tame TIMES Gholfdag was vanjaar weereens ‘n reuse sukses.

Die Gholfdag is aangebied ten bate van die NG Gemeente Alberton-Suid, wat dan die fondse wat ingesamel is aanwend vir die onderskeie gemeenskapsprojekte wat deur die kerk bestuur word.

Ds Corneil Du Plessis van die gemeente het by die prysuitdeling die deelnemers, borge, asook tame TIMES bedank vir die ondersteuning. “Ons staan vir daardie mense wat nie vir hulself kan praat nie, die wat nie vir hulself kan sorg nie,” het hy verduidelik. “Die deelname was iets besonders en daarom kan almal weet dat die Here elkeen se bydrae op ‘n besondere manier gaan gebruik.”

Van die projekte van Alberton-Suid sluit in twee laerskole in die Suide van Johannesburg, waar daar vir elke kind daagliks twee warm maaltye verskaf word. Daar word ook tydens die

Bloemfontein Celtic beat Orlando Pirates 3-2 on Saturday night in an ABSA Premiership clash at the Orlando Stadium.

Vuyani Ntanga, Thabo Nthethe and Musa Nyatama each scored a penalty for Celtic.

Pirates’ goals came from dexterous footwork of Lennox Bacela and Andile Jali penalty.

Celtic had Pirates on the back foot from the opening minutes as Vuyani Ntanga tried to score from a free kick, but his shot went high and wide. Soccer fans knew that they were in for a cracker of a game.

The rest of the first half saw numerous attempts at goal, starting with Pirates player Daine Klate who tried his luck from a free kick in a dangerous position. His attempt hit the wall and was deflected out for a corner.

Klate’s attempt was followed shortly by Andile Jali when he tried a long range effort, but it flew over the goal.

Musa Nyatama had a chance to give Celtic the lead, but his shot from the edge of the area went wide to the right in the 22nd minute.

Ntanga had a good chance in the 26th minute when he ran into the box, but his shot went straight to Meyiwa.

With emotions running high, fans were on the edge of their seats waiting in anticipation for the first goal. Finally in the 38th minute Celtic managed to score a goal when Ayanda Gcaba failed to clear a cross, Vuyani Ntanga latched on to the ball and drilled in a sublime goal just outside the area to make it 1-0, giving Senzo Meyiwa no chance.

Going into the break the score remained 1-0

to the visitors.

In the second-half heavy rain began to pour down at the Orlando Stadium, but it did not deter the Pirates.

Pirates Lennox Bacela finally equalised as he scored from a tight angle against his former team in the 56th minute to make it 1-1. Celtic was awarded a penalty in the 88th minute when Mbongeni Gumede brought down Trevor Lamola. Shortly afterwards Nyatama stepped up and made no mistake as he sent Meyiwa the wrong way, and Celtic led 3-1.

In the 90th minute substitute Mpho Makola nearly raised a point for Pirates, but Tingyemb saved. Pirates were awarded a penalty in the 91st minute when substitute Collins Mbesuma was brought down by Nthethe. Andile Jali scored, ending the final score at 3-2.

The Pakistan team walk away from a series with that much more self-confidence; and into a somewhat tougher series when they return to the UAE to face Sri-Lanka.

I say tougher, as the Sri-Lankan’s are more suited to the conditions in the UAE than the Proteas. Pakistan, with a blend of youth and experience have the second T20 game to thank for their short and successful series on our shores, as this T20 win, I believe was the turning point of the ODI Series.

It gave the Pakistan team the self-belief that they could beat South Africa, after losing the previous series. Misbah-ul-Haq led the team superbly by showing that although he is approaching retirement age; he is still a force to be reckoned with.

A couple of months back, there was talk of Misbah being sacked as the Pakistan captain, due to Pakistan’s poor showing on their tour of Zimbabwe. Somehow, the selectors kept faith in standing by Misbah which has proven to be the correct choice for now.

The Proteas will have to up their game as they face the in-form India who arrived in South Africa yesterday. MS Dhoni and his team will be no pushovers having come off an ODI series win at home against the West Indies. Steyn and co will need to bowl a lot tighter, with less wayward deliveries as the Indian batsmen will punish them. The series begins with the first game being played at the Wanderers, then off to Durban and Pretoria before the first test match at the Wanderers
