Germiston shoot-out tame TIMES claims officer Four suspects were arrested after they initiated a shoot-out between them and police in Wadeville Germiston, which claimed the lives of five people.

According to SAPS spokesperson Lt Col. Mohale, three suspects and one member of SAPS crime intelligence were declared dead on the scene of an attempted robbery at a scrap metal establishment in Wadeville.

The incident took place on Thursday 26 September as members of SAPS and EMPD followed up on an anonymous tip-off. The operation also saw three suspects and one EMPD officer being hospitalised due to sustained injuries. Four others were arrested.

At time of print one of the three hospitalised suspects had also lost his life.

Unconfirmed reports make mention of other suspects fleeing the scene, however police could not confirm this as a fact, neither could they confirm if any money was stolen.

Minister to one of the most tormented ministries in the country, Nathi Mthetwa recently delivered the nation’s crime statistics and, in true South African style, the result thereof has been a mixed bag of Facebook and twitter statuses. I must say, if there is one thing that we are good at, it is letting everyone who can’t do anything to change the situation (because half the time they are also complaining about the same thing) know how dissatisfied we are.

So what really is the problem with the crime statistics? Somebody please enlighten me.

Will we ever get to the point where we are completely satisfied with the performance of the ladies and gents in blue? If yes, under which conditions will that be?

Before minister Mthetwa’s announcement, I must admit, I paid no attention to crime stats.

But even a passing glance at the stats reveals that in comparison to the downward trend we experienced over the past six years, we have some questions to ask ourselves.

Now the question I’ve been asking myself is: Does this decline mean that there is a decline in the capability of the man in the uniform?

Does it perhaps reveal that criminals are more slippery than ever before?

Whatever the case, I believe two things – firstly, I cannot complain about the way police do their jobs unless I give them full cooperation. If we, as law abiding citizens, are not willing to be policed then the police will never be able to properly serve us.

For example, have you ever realised how irritated we get whenever we are randomly pulled over or encounter a roadblock? I was shocked once when at a community meeting one gentleman complained to Police General Mzwandile Petros, over the implementation of an initiative that was planned to increase police visibility by allowing them to drive with their lights on. If we see SAPS as an irritant, how do we suppose they will execute their duties diligently?

Secondly, I am strongly against delegating my safety onto someone else. It’s my responsibility to make sure I am adequately protected.

There are nowhere close to enough policemen and women to guarantee a crimeless South Africa. I don’t see us winning the fight against crime while we rely solely on the police.

We have to actively involve ourselves on a personal and a community level. Rather than entertaining ourselves with rants, which ultimately take us nowhere but to the next issue we have to complain about, let’s get involved. Know your neighbour, support community policing forums and similarly aligned corporate formations. Share with us ideas of how we can, together with the men and women in blue, drive criminal elements out of our communities.

Accessible Quality Health Services held their Healthy Bodies, Healthy Eating Day on 21 September at their medical centre in Mondeor. The day consisted of a healthy eating presentation from an AQHS dietician, a mental and spiritual health talk with their psychologist, an aerobics exercise in the pool with an instructor, and a lunch with a question and answer session with the wellness physician.

On the evening of 17 September a fire broke out in unit 19 of Brackenveld Villas in Brackendowns. The owner, Mrs Jewel Grace, was asleep when the fire broke out and woke up when she was unable to breathe.

She rushed from her bedroom to the lounge, which was engulfed in flames. In a panic she ran to her bedroom, grabbing her cell phone and trying to phone her son Steven. Unable to locate her keys or get in touch with Steven, and already suffering from smoke inhalation on top of a lung operation 3 months ago, she collapsed at the front door unable to free herself.

Residents broke the front door open and managed to pull Mrs Grace to safety. Mrs Grace was rushed to the Union Hospital and remains in a stable condition in the ICU. Unit 19 was totally destroyed and 4 other units suffered water damage. Mrs Grace, who is

Taking Hands, who have assisted the Alberton community over the past 2 years and have helped over 90 families in need, will once again assist the Grace family, however they cannot do this without the assistance of the community.

New look for Germiston Lake The Executive Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele officially reopened the Germiston Lake Park after it underwent a R20 million facelift.

The lake, with its extreme makeover, is set to change the face of recreation in the City of Ekurhuleni.

The multi-million rand park renovations began in October 2011. It now boasts majestic landscaping, picnic areas, playgrounds, walkways as well as the wetlands.

The park has been designed to encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors and interact with one another as families and residents of Ekurhuleni. It features a fully equipped openair gym; revamped pathways for walking and jogging; three playground areas; new park furniture, braai and picnic facilities, including Victorian-styled gazebos. There is something for everyone at the park, and the designated play area is expected to be a favourite among

parents and children. A junior playground furnished with modern play equipment designed to encourage learning through play is on offer. Another special feature is the play area tailor-made to accommodate people living with disabilities. The accessibility was a priority for the City and this was incorporated into the design of every area in the park.

The Jazz festival section is converted into a classy outdoor venue and the ‘19th hole’ will be removed and landscaped. All of the buildings are receiving a fresh layer of paint and tiling, where necessary. Two of the four ablution blocks will be rebuilt in the near future.

Consideration was also given to restoring the infrastructure such as roads, paving, street lights, irrigation, storm water channels, water and electricity supply. Visitors should note that vehicles will no longer be permitted to park inside the facility, only at the designated parking area.

Dancing gem hits the big time Germiston dancing gem, Chris van Staden is leaving his mark on the dance industry.

Chris has recently made it to the top 16 of the third season of So You Think You Can Dance South Africa.

The Hip Hop and Contemporary dancer wowed the highly acclaimed judges at his audition at the Academy of Performing Arts earlier this year and have been pleasing audiences since.

Returning to So You Think You Can Dance for the second time, after he was booted out in the last season during the call-backs, Chris is delighted that he was selected for the judging panel and went to call-back auditions where he got the opportunity to work with choreographers.

Chris’s journey on So You Think You Can Dance hasn’t been the easiest one as his father, Stefan (47), died tragically in a fire a couple of weeks ago.

Stefan was burning a fire-break at Sycamore Tree Lodge Manor when the wind turned. The fire caught up with him as he was trying to get to safety.

The loss of his father has given Christopher more encouragement to win the competition in honour of his dad.

Contestants in the top 16 are paired with each other during this phase of the competition.

Dancers are taken out of their comfort zone, performing dance disciplines that they aren’t used to. Audiences can expect to see Hip Hop, Ballroom, Afro-fusion and even South Africa’s very own Pantsula.

At the end of each show, the bottom two couples dance for the open position, during which each competitor does a solo dance.

How chemotherapy affects the eyes

“I feel so fortunate and grateful to be a survivor of breast cancer. I see it as a gift” - Olivia Newton John This month is breast cancer awareness month and tame TIMES would like to share some effects of chemotherapy on the eyes. Below are examples:

Keep an “eye” out for the following symptoms: Cloudy vision. This may be a sign that cataracts are developing. Cataracts are when the crystalline lens in the eye loses its transparency.

Red eyes. Conjunctivitis, some people call it “pink eye”, is seen as redness and inflammation of the white of the eye (conjunctiva).

Dry Eyes. The tear layer’s integrity may be influenced by chemotherapy and causes the eyes to feel dry and you may even feel a burning sensation.

Itchy eyes. Some medications could cause a slight allergic reaction and the eyes to itch.

Photophobia. Photophobia is more commonly known as light sensitivity. Some medications can cause you to become light sensitive, but it may also be caused by more serious secondary problems like glaucoma.

These symptoms mentioned should not be ignored. Please inform your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms. Any sudden vision loss and severe eye pain should also be brought to the doctor’s attention.

Beauty Out of Damage was shot in 1993 by the renowned artist Matuschka.

The photograph generated 12 awards (including a Pulitzer Prize Nomination) after appearing on the cover of the Sunday Magazine section of The New York Times on August 13, 1993.

Subsequently The New York Times received an unusually high amount of letters to the editor, ranking it as one of the most controversial covers in its history. In addition to photography awards, the artist received numerous humanitarian awards including The Gilda Radner Award, Person of the Week (Peter Jennings World-Wide News) and Humanitarian of the Year Award.

In the mid-nineties Beauty Out of

Damage became one of the most published pictures in the world, appearing in hundreds of international publications, books and on TV shows and documentaries. Twenty years since Beauty Out of Damage’s debut, the image is still in demand - often published in scholarly and academic journals related to sociological issues on health, medicine, beauty and body image.

In 2003 and again in 2011, LIFE Magazine included this photo in a special edition entitled “100 Photographs That Changed the World. The New York Times, in conjunction with the Aperture Foundation released “The Photographs” also in 2011. This book features Beauty Out of Damage amongst 250 of the most important photographs published in The

New York Times Magazine in the past 30 years.

In 2012 Semana Magazine (South America’s version of Newsweek) chose Beauty Out of Damage as one of the most important images taken in the past 30 years for their 30th anniversary.

On or about 18 August 2013, CBS Sunday Morning aired a tribute to both Matuschka and the image that helped launch the breast cancer movement in 1993. Inside Edition showcased Beauty out of Damage on their program regarding a story about Angelina Jolie aired Spring 2013.

Beauty Out of Damage has been collected by numerous museums internationally and continues to be showcased in many exhibitions worldwide.

Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. To better understand breast cancer, it helps to understand how any cancer can develop.

Cancer occurs as a result of mutations, or abnormal changes, in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy. The genes are in each cell’s nucleus, which acts as the “control room” of each cell. Normally, the cells in our bodies replace themselves through an orderly process of cell growth healthy new cells take over as old ones die out. But over time, mutations can “turn on” certain genes and “turn off” others in a cell. That changed cell gains the ability to keep dividing without control or order, producing more cells just like it and forming a tumor.

A tumor can be benign (not dangerous to health) or malignant (has the potential to be dangerous). Benign tumors are not considered cancerous. Their cells are close to normal in appearance, they grow slowly, and they do not invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancerous.

Left unchecked, malignant cells eventually can spread beyond the original tumor to other parts of the body.

The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts - the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple.

Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.

Over time, cancer cells can invade nearby healthy breast tissue and make their way into the underarm lymph nodes, small organs that filter out foreign substances in the body. If cancer cells get into the lymph nodes, they then have a pathway into other parts of the body. The breast cancer’s stage refers to how far the cancer cells have spread beyond the original tumor.

Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality (a “mistake” in the genetic material). However, only 5-10% of cancers are due to an abnormality inherited from your mother or father. About 90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general.

There are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible and lower risk of breast cancer or a breast cancer recurrence (such as maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly).

Always remember, breast cancer is never anyone’s fault. Feeling guilty, or telling yourself that breast cancer happened because of something you or anyone else did, is not productive.

Facts you should know: Stages of breast cancer Stage 0 Cancer cells remain inside the breast duct, without invasion into normal adjacent breast tissue.

Stage IA The tumor measures up to 2 cm, and the cancer has not spread outside the breast; no lymph nodes are involved.

Stage IB There is no tumor in the breast; instead, small groups of cancer cells - larger than 0.2 millimeter but not larger than 2 millimeters - are found in the lymph nodes.

OR There is a tumor in the breast that is no larger than 2 centimeters, and there are small groups of cancer cells – larger than 0.2 millimeter but not larger than 2 millimeters – in the lymph nodes.

Stage IIA No tumor can be found in the breast, but cancer cells are found in the axillary lymph nodes (the lymph nodes under the

arm).

OR, The tumor measures 2 centimeters or smaller and has spread to the axillary lymph nodes.

OR, The tumor is larger than 2 but no larger than 5 centimeters and has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes.

Stage IIB The tumor is larger than 2 but no larger than 5 centimeters and has spread to the axillary lymph nodes.

OR, The tumor is larger than 5 centimeters but has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes.

Stage IIIA No tumor is found in the breast. Cancer is found in axillary lymph nodes that are sticking together or to other structures, or cancer may be found in lymph nodes near the breastbone.

OR, The tumor is any size. Cancer has spread to the axillary lymph nodes, which are sticking together or to other structures, or cancer may be found in lymph nodes near the breastbone.

Stage IIIB The tumor may be any size and has spread to the chest wall

and/or skin of the breast, AND may have spread to axillary lymph nodes that are clumped together or sticking to other structures, or cancer may have spread to lymph nodes near the breastbone.

Inflammatory breast cancer is considered at least stage IIIB. Stage IIIC There may either be no sign of cancer in the breast or a tumor may be any size and may have spread to the chest wall and/ or the skin of the breast, AND The cancer has spread to lymph nodes either above or below the collarbone, AND The cancer may have spread to axillary lymph nodes or to lymph nodes near the breastbone.

Stage IV The cancer has spread — or metastasized — to other parts of the body.

Merging disabilities Take the pledge and transport month

*Picture taken from www.thecityfix.com October is National Transport month in South Africa. During this month, everyone is encouraged to use public transport on at least one day. Many politicians, celebrities and prominent business people abandon their private cars and heed the call.

This year, South African Employers for Disability (SAE4D), an employer organisation that is committed to addressing issues confronting the integration of people with disabilities in the workplace, is issuing this challenge to those planning to get into the spirit on Transport Month: use a wheelchair. If you don’t have access to a wheelchair, make the trip with a large, very heavy suitcase.

SAE4D chairman, Dr Jerry Gule points out that while inadequacies of the public transport system cause inconvenience for most commuters, it isolates people with disabilities.

“It effectively makes it impossible for many potentially economically active individuals to get to and from work. And it hinders many businesses that sincerely wish to employ more people with disabilities from doing so,” Gule said.

It has been estimated that only around one percent of people with disabilities in South Africa are employed. According to Dr Gule, a major issue is the fact that only a very small percentage of people with disabilities have access to private vehicles.

In her 2005 thesis for her Masters degree in Town and Regional Planning, “Investigating the public transport system in Cape Town

with reference to special needs passengers”, Deidre Ribbonaar stated, “Society suffers in terms of costs due to (people with disabilities) not being able to function independently in normal daily activities. The costs in terms of what society has to give are included in tax increases so as to pay for special assistance to a (person with disability) not being able to access employment opportunities because of an obstructive public transport system.”

Dr Gule notes that as a signatory to the 2007 UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, South Africa is required to develop a public transport network that accommodates people with disabilities.

“South Africa also has a plethora of legislation relating to the need to include people with disabilities into the country’s economic and social mainstream, starting with the Constitution. There have also been numerous policy and legislative directives over the years that emphasise the need to make our public transport system more accessible. But this is not being translated into action quickly enough. The Santa Shoebox Project kicked off on 1 September, with the goal to collect 100 000 gifts this year for underprivileged children across the country and Namibia.

White Widow found with SA passport Recent events in Kenya have had the world talking. At the centre of the unfolding saga is a story closer to home than anyone of us could have imagined.

A ministry responsible for guarding national security; our home affairs, was exposed to have been hoodwinked by an international terrorist group. The women at the centre of the Westgate bombing; British born Samantha Lewthwaite, managed to get a South Africa passport under the false name Natalie Faye Webb.

Samantha Lewthwaite (29), nick named; White widow, is the wife of Germaine Lindsay, one of four Islamist suicide bombers who attacked the London underground transport system in 2005 killing 52 people. According to South African Home Affairs department attained her Webb passport in 2008. A year later former US first lady; Hillary Clinton issued out a warning to local authorities of alQaeda and other linked movements such as al-Shabaab movement using South Africa as a recruiting station.

Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor has confirmed Lewthwaite obtained her passport under false the Natalie Faye Webb.

The false passport was found in Kenya in 2011 and returned to South Africa, and according to Pandor that was the last of Lewthwaite’s visits to South Africa and due to information from Kenya which linked her to terrorist activities.

ENCA reported that Lewthwaite, who has now been classified as a danger to the world, had also used the name Natalie Faye Webb to rent at least three properties in Johannesburg and run up debts of R183 123. However none of the neighbours at all those properties could

acknowledge ever seeing or interacting with her.

The controversy around Samantha Lewthwaite leaves us questioning the safety of our nation and that of other nations. We all know of people who enter the country illegally, but when we legitimize them by allowing them to slip through the system we run the risk of endangering the nation’s security.

Staff negligence cause of loss

PG Joost writes: On 4 September I went to Bedford Life Hospital to pay a doctor’s account that my medical aid did not settle in full. I parked and locked my vehicle inside the security controlled parking area only a few meters from the main entrance to the hospital.

With my return, about 15 minutes later, I found my vehicle had been stolen. When I informed the security guards at the gate they said it was impossible as two guards were manning the gate.

I then tried calling Tracker on my cell phone, but there was no network coverage. When I requested assistance from the Bedford Life admin staff to please use their phone, I was informed they need a code to phone out and only about ten minutes later could I use a phone to contact Tracker.

I then requested to view the CCTV and witnessed how an unidentified man, who was sitting at the main entrance, was watching everybody’s movements. As I entered the hospital he walked up to my vehicle, entered it and drove out through the security gates without being stopped. Tracker then phoned me and informed me that because of the time

delay the culprits removed the tracker unit from the vehicle and they could not trace it.

I am very disappointed in Bedford Life’s conduct as it was due to their staff’s gross negligence and incompetence, and harbouring criminals on their premises, that my vehicle was stolen and possibly not recovered. The assistance from the staff at the hospital was shocking to say the least, some members even found the whole incident amusing. I honestly believe that if I had access to a phone sooner, Tracker could have found the vehicle. I have incurred tremendous financial loss and feel that Bedford Life should at least pay my excess, which does not even cover my accessories on the vehicle, the aggravation, money and time lost by replacing the stolen vehicle.

Bedford Life has always been our choice for sterling medical treatment, but their management, administration section and security leaves much to be desired.

Not a big fan of Bedford Life at this stage. tame TIMES has sent the letter to Bedford Life and is waiting for comment.

Life Bedford Gardens response Dr Tertia Nieuwoudt Hospital Manager writes: This incident is the first time that a car has been stolen on the premises of Life Bedford Gardens in the last couple of years and was investigated thoroughly to understand the circumstances and prevent future crime.

The CCTV camera material was evaluated by myself as well as experts from the security company providing security services to the hospital. We believe that the vehicle of Mr Jooste was targeted by either a syndicate or professionals who were familiar with his whereabouts. It is almost certain that he was followed by a pedestrian who was able to unlock his car and remove it off the premises within minutes. According to Mr Jooste the tracker device was found outside on the pavement close to the hospital and was probably already discarded by the time Mr Jooste discovered that his vehicle was stolen.

The time delay in contacting Tracker would therefore unlikely have made any difference in this case. We regard the safety of our valued customers and their property as serious and

employ the services of a security company to monitor the parking bay area of the hospital, but it is important to understand that, as is common practice with parking bay areas, motor vehicle drivers park their vehicles in these areas at their own risk. We have met with the security company and tighter control measures have been put in place to ensure that no vehicle is allowed to leave the premises without reasonable doubt that the driver has permission to remove it. We believe that this will be sufficient to prevent vehicle theft and prevent similar unfortunate incidents in future. We once again apologise to Mr Jooste for his experience and are hopeful that the CCTV camera footage of the incident, which is clear, will be helpful to the police investigation around his case. We will do everything we can to co-operate with the police with regards to Mr Jooste’s case and our security firm is on high alert. The additional security measures taken, while not helpful to Mr Jooste at this stage, should give comfort to our hospital visitors.

Rietvlei Zoo CANSA Fun Walk 5 October A CANSA Fun Walk/Run Fundraising, Awareness and Celebration event will be taking place at Rietvlei Zoo Farm.

It is aimed at bringing people together to fight the fight again cancer. The Fun Day starts off with a fun 4km or 8km walk/run inside the farm, hosted by Joburg Harriers Athletic Club volunteers.

International author visits Holy Rosary

Holy Rosary High School was honoured to host a talk by Sarah Penny, author of The Beneficiaries, the current IEB Matric set work. Sarah now lives in the UK. She was able to come out to South Africa, even though she is about to have her third child, to talk to a few of the IEB schools about this remarkable novel.

St Benedict’s and Assumption Convent joined the Holy Rosary girls for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the author of this great South African novel.

Holy Rosary student Simone Soares summed up her experience as follows, “It was a privilege to meet the author and an opportunity that students seldom get. It gave us a chance to look into the mind that fashioned characters we have become so familiar with. However,

what made this talk extremely unique was the personal level in which Sarah delivered it. The Beneficiaries itself is semi-autobiographical.

“Hearing Sarah speak of her school life and the process of writing the novel gave the already compelling novel a new, much more personal perspective. We were able to gain some insight into her inspiration for various characters, and truly understand what life was like for Sarah under the hierarchies she encountered in both boarding school and South Africa at the time. Being able to interact with this great South African author inspired me to want to go forward and write my own story. Sarah Penny made me feel like, in the words of another great South African, Steve Biko, I too can ‘write what I like’.”

The event took place on 19 September at Germiston Stadium, with the scholars taking part in field and track events. Holy Rosary attained 650 points, followed by De La Salle with 612 points.

St Andrew’s swimmers take on Seagulls Seventeen swimmers from St Andrew’s School for Girls competed in the Seagulls age group Championship held in Durban recently.

It is one of the premier short course galas on the calendar, with Chad Le Clos, Olympic gold medallist, one of the 800 swimmers from all over South Africa who took part in this event.

Roh-Anne Coetzee, in grade 10, competed in the open age group and participated in 11 events, achieving three silver medals and three bronze medals.

She was placed 3rd overall in her age group.

Erin Anderson, in grade 8 and one of the swimmers on the Get the Girls to Gold programme, won three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.

The Star newspaper’s annual Design-an-Ad competition winners were recently announced.

In the grade 6 and 7 section, Sharessa Naidoo was placed first with her PatioWarehouse advert and Lauren Urmson was a finalist with her Cultunet design.

In the grade 4 and 5 section, Kelsey Cloete was a winner for Sweets from Heaven and Tatiana Dias scored a 3rd place with her design for Sweets from Heaven. The girls were delighted with their wonderful prizes.

“At St Andrew’s Junior School, creativity is encouraged and this is reflected in the excellent results the girls have achieved,” said art teacher Mrs Aziezah Essop.

The South African Junior National Acrobatics Championships were held in Pretoria recently.

Seventy competitors in the Level 2 section, irrespective of age, competed

These four braaiers join Borries, a mountain of a man and a proud Albertonian who recently won the popular Bring&Braai competition on DStv’s kykNET and Braaiboy, who entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2012 when he was awarded the world record for the longest continuous braai.

Braaiboy has braaied everyday for the past four and a half years. Borries and Braaiboy are the team captains with Sarel Loots a.k.a Sarel Van Sabie, a ChesaNyama representative and a celeb chef and Jimmy Baptista, MD of Jimmy’s Sauces in the team as well. tame TIMES managed to sneak in a chat with Borries between all the braaing and judging.

Borries explained that braaing is not only about the meat but about the socialising. “It is not fun to braai alone.” Borries said.

When asked about what is the skill or technique of being a good braaier, Borries said that you need good ingredients, mature meat; you must know your butcher and have great side dishes. “That is where your wife comes in, behind every good braaier there is a great woman,” Borries laughs. Adding “If a man can’t braai, he is going to struggle to find a wife.”

Hayden Quinn from Australian Master Chef was one of the judges. Even though he might know a lot about cooking, he learnt so much more about braaing.

Dumped: defenceless puppies Recently the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) received two puppies that had been dumped. Both are being bottle-fed and cared for by AACL kennel staff.

The first, a three-week-old Chihuahua Cross, was brought in by a concerned JHB South resident who found the little pup wandering in the street. The second pup was collected in South Hills after a resident called AACL saying it had been dumped in her yard.

It has been reported that someone wheels around small pups in a shopping trolley in the South Hills and Unigray area.

The AACL would like to make the public aware that at three weeks old or younger, pups are far too young to feed themselves.

At this age, they have yet to develop their own teeth and should still be suckling off their mothers. Ideally puppies should not be taken away from their mothers until they are at least eight weeks old.

The final performance of the Joburg Ballet’s production of Cinderella, on 29 September, was a breath-taking marvel.

Beautiful sets and costume design by Andrew Botha, new choreography by Iain MacDonald, and music by Johann Strauss junior ensured that the audience was transported to the magical fairy tale world of Cinderella.

Burnise Silvius danced the title role exquisitely and with incredible artistry and flawless technique. Burnise was partnered by the very talented Brazilian dancer, Jonathan Rodrigues. The Pas De Deux from the wedding scene was a true ballet showpiece. Ms Silvius seemed to spend most of her time in the air, only coming down to show off her incredible pirouettes and beautiful arabesques. Mr Rodrigues

did the rather difficult lifts with apparent effortless ease.

An element of comedy was brought by the ugly stepsisters, portrayed brilliantly by Luis de Castro and Carlos Santos, with Kitty Phetla dancing as their mother. A special mention must be made of Nicole Ferreira, who played the role of the fairy godmother.

Ms Ferreira is a tall but elegant and very talented dancer.

Mr MacDonald, the artistic director, has the company on the right track. SA Derby league grows Off-roaders head to Balito

The evening of 5 October is going to be a night to remember in South African Roller Derby History. C-Max Roller Derby League presents three new teams to the league, in addition to The Thundering Hellcats and Raging Warmones that have thrilled and inspired women all over South Africa to become a derby girl.

Jailhouse Lock Down - The Gangs of C-Max is the 4th bout to be hosted by CMRDL and will undoubtedly be the biggest one thus far.

With five teams in the league, 2014 promises to be loaded with tears, torn fishnets and bone-breaking derby action.

Roller derby is the fastest growing female sport in the world with over 1200 leagues worldwide. C-Max Roller Derby League was established in 2010 and is the first roller derby league on the African continent. Roller Derby is now played on all 7 continents, from

the USA, where it originated, all the way to Japan.

Roller derby is a full contact female sport played by two teams.

Five skaters from each team play 2 minute jams.

When a jam is finished the skaters rotate and 5 other skaters from each team is sent on, and so the game continues.

The game consists of two 30 minute periods with a 15 minute halftime break in-between.

The object of the game is for the jammer from each team to pass the opposing team’s blockers, for every blocker she passes she gets 1 point. If a player incurs a penalty, such as a back block or track cutting they are sent to the penalty box. High speed and full contact, it is one of the most exhilarating spectator sports to emerge in the last 13 years.

Off-road enthusiasts had their eyes set on the horizon on 26 September in their efforts to raise funds for Quadriplegics South Africa (QASA). tame TIMES caught up with the off-roaders before they left for their 1000km trip to Balito.

A delighted Corinne Andrews stated, “This idea came to us while we were sitting under a tree. We had approximately 200 people taking part in the first year. It is great to see how much it has grown. We raise an average of a million rand for QASA each year.”

Andrews hoped to make this year their biggest year ever, since it’s the fund raiser’s 10th year anniversary.

Ari Serlis from QASA said, “I am feeling proud, anxious, overwhelmed and nervous for this year’s trip to Balito.”

“This is my eighth time doing this and I have learnt to never take it for granted. Always have a well-prepared bike with your mind focused

Paramedic Steven Boyd from Events Medical and Security (E.M.A.S), situated in Bez Valley, will be accompanying the riders to KZN, encouraging everyone participating to “take it easy and enjoy the trip”.

Participants will be exploring places that most people who live in SA will never get to see. The ride changes every day and has a few new sections that previous participants have not ridden before.

From the rolling hills of KZN to thick indigenous forests, rocky mountain passes, dams, rivers and beautiful farmlands, riders will see it all on their 250km of riding per day.

De Sa misses opportunity to shine

Rodger De Sa was on his way to his maiden local trophy at the helm of the Pirates ship, but his objectives were not met as Platinum Stars ended a seven year long trophyless run on Saturday when they beat Orlando Pirates in the MTN 8 Cup final at a rainy Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The two teams braved the first half downpour and went back to the changing room goalless. Stars came out more determined and opened by scoring in the first minute of the second half through Ng’ambi. The Pirates, who came into the game as favourites after beating Kaizer Chiefs (2 – 1 aggregate), found their equalizing late in the second half, forcing the game into extra time and eventually to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

Pirates coach Rodger De Sa should probably focus on his players’ composure and ability to shoot from the penalty spot, as three of his players (Mahamutsa, Mabena, Bacela) missed giving Stars a 2 – 1 victory and an R8m stronger bank balance.

Lions feel the Sharks’ bite The Golden Lions, coming off an impressive victory against the Blue Bulls, lost to the Sharks (31 – 25) in Friday night’s ABSA Curry Cup fixture at Ellis Park Stadium. With only two changes to the side which made light of the Bulls, no one could have predicted what the end of the 80 minutes of one of the toughest games this season would be. Going into Friday’s fixture, the Lions were third on the log and a victory over the Sharks, log leaders, would have meant a lot towards the goal of a home semi-final.

The Sharks started the game on the front foot, applying huge pressure on the Lions’ forwards, creating gaps for their quick backlines. However, towards the middle of the first half the tide turned on the Sharks, whose early lead was stolen by the home team. At half-time the score was Lions 20 – 16 Sharks. The second half saw the visitors back in the driving seat and this time they would not take their feet off the pedal.

Many of the Lions’ second half attacks were turned over due to poor ball handling at critical points. The Sharks’ only weakness was their line-outs, other than that they dominated. The Lions did however have a moment where they could have repeated the first half’s late steal, but the ref referred a try decision to the TMO, which showed the Sharks defence hold the ball up preventing the try.
