Jozi South Half Marathon: Rain and high spirits Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za

Sunday morning was wet and cold with many people opting to stay in bed, however that was not the case for the participants of the Jozi South Half Marathon, hosted by Brotherhood Athletics Club, Gold Reef City and tame TIMES. They were all up at the crack of dawn, prepared for what the weather had in store for them with a smile on their face. The Kalmer sisters made their mark, running the Jozi South Half Marathon for the first time and both winning. Older sister Rene won the 21km and Christine the 10km race, both in the senior ladies category. Rene Kalmer told tame TIMES that she really enjoyed running the streets of Soweto, as it brought back sweet memories of when she won the Soweto Marathon. “It is really a pity about the weather. Luckily while running it cools you down, it was really a nice race. She applauded all the volunteers, marshals and everyone who assisted in the rain. Lucky Mohale won the 21km in the senior men category with a time of 1h6m3s. David Manja came in second and Sibusiso Nzima third. In the 10km race Derocious Makhobolo took first place, Precious Mashele second and Samuel Matabutha third. Geshashia Gamanda took second place in the 21km senior ladies category, with Lebo Phalula coming in third. Both Phalula sisters had a victory as Lebogang also took third place in the 10km senior ladies. Tiny Mpho Mabuza took second place.

Many people chose the fun 4km run in Gold Reef City Theme Park as all the entry fees for this race went towards CANSA. Ten rand of each 21km and 10km entry will also be donated to CANSA. Hannelie Briel of CANSA said the donation will go toward research, education and support for all people affected by cancer. Due to the Jozi South Half Marathon supporting this worthy cause, there were several Peace Starts ambassadors who took part in the race. This became a challenge on its own with Olympic rowing medallist Lawrence Ndlovu, from Team Seize, challenging Cito, frontman of Wonderboom, from Team Showbiz. Obviously the sportsman won the challenge, but Cito accepted the loss in good spirit. For more results please visit www. entryonline.co.za

For the child’s sake

What can I do about child abuse?

South Africa has an exceptionally high rate of child abuse. Statistics reveal that one in four children will be abused some time during their childhood. More shocking than that is the fact that the one quarter of what we call the future will, more often than not, suffer these ills at the hands of a known and trusted individual – a friend, neighbour, relative and in extreme cases even a parent. Recent occurrences in the country have continued to shock some of us who continue to have faith in the goodness of the human race. Crimes perpetrated against the defenceless members of our communities continue to become more violent, revealing what in my mind can be considered as people who are fast losing the basic elements of what makes us human. Surely refraining from intentionally crippling the survival of a functional human race, truthfulness and lending a hand where we can, are a few things which differentiate

You have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act to report cases or suspected cases of child abuse to police

Check for warning signs that indicate that a child might be at risk or vulnerable. 1) Physical signs such as bruising, head Injuries, broken bones or malnutrition. 2) Change in behaviour such as not going to school, withdrawal, poor concentration, fear, anxiety, suicidal or self-harming behaviour. 3) Other signs such as obsessions, inappropriate sexual behaviour, inappropriate anger, bed-wetting and difficultly sleeping, or changes in eating. How do I respond when a child reports child abuse to me? 1) Believe the child. 2) Thank the child for having courage to talk to you. 3) Tell the child that it was not his or her fault. 4) Explain confidentiality – that although the child has disclosed in confidence, you as the adult need to report to the right authority, like the social worker, so that the child can get help and support. Address the child’s

concerns. Maybe share with them the understanding of “good and bad” secrets. 5)Recognise and be sensitive to the child’s feelings. Listen to the child, reflect on their feelings. 6)Reassure them you will find support for them.

us from animals. In my mind, failing to secure a well-constructed survival of the human race is also a failure to appreciate our birthright. Work with me on this thought: If it is true that each generation progressively betters the successes of the previous one, then we need to be careful of the heritage we are leaving behind should we fail to protect the children of our generation. We stood up for the rhino; and although we cannot at the moment say we have succeeded, we cannot be blamed of not making an effort. I bring this up because the survival of a functional human race is far more important. Every lifetime happens just once, so never turn a blind eye to the plight of the child. Even if the economy crashed, I would consider us a successful generation if we can make it our priority that every child lives that lifetime confidently, knowing that their safety is every South African’s concern.

Twelve injured in collision

What must I NOT do? 1) Investigate the abuse. 2) Remove the child unless the child is in immediate and serious danger. 3) Confront the abuser or the parents. 4) Decide if the child is telling the truth or not. 5) Over-react when a child tells you of the abuse – listen kindly and calmly. 6) Make any promises to the child that you can’t keep. 7) “Bad mouth” the abuser. 8) You have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act to report cases or suspected cases of child abuse to police, social worker or any Child Protection organisation in your area.

Bloody trail tied to Krejcir

Problems present opportunities, work is action

Deceased Bassam Issa’s Audi Q7 was spotted outside Moneypoint, the Bedfordview business premises of Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir. Issa was found dead in his vehicle on 12 October, after he sustained several gunshot wounds. Thirty-three empty bullet casings were strewn over the Bradford and Smith Road crossing where he was found. Issa is known to have links with Krejcir. Police are currently investigating links between the Krejcir and the Cape Town gang Sexy Boys. The Sunday independent reported that Cape Town leaders had moved into Bedfordview. The independent linked Issa to the murder of Leon Davids, a member of the gang. Davids was in a witness protection program and was assisting in the case of the murder of Cyril Beeka, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Cape Town in 2011. Issa is alleged to be a member of the gang and moved to Bedfordview. Krejcir denied any association with him, telling SAPA, “I did not have any association with the man, I only [knew] him as a resident of Bedfordview. I only know him as a lonely man, who was always alone. I feel sorry for him but what can we do.” Another associate, Jerome Safi, confirmed he had received a death threat the next day saying “you’re next”. Safi reported the case to the Bedfordview SAPS. The threat occurred only a few days before Safi was set to testify as state witness in the trial of Garlong Holworthy, Thabo Mogapi and Kagiso Linken, who are accused of involvement of the kidnapping and murder

of Uwe Gemballa. Krejcir’s name has been associated with a number of unsolved murders in South Africa but he has never been charged. In July, he narrowly survived an assassination attempt involving a Volkswagen Cross Polo fitted with several gun barrels behind its rear number plate. Krejcir is currently fighting for asylum in South Africa to avoid extradition to the Czech Republic, where he has been charged for conspiracy to murder, counterfeiting, tax evasion, extortion and abduction.

By Nieto Hernandez After a week away I hope we haven’t grown too estranged. Quite a lot has happened since then, so believe me I’m finding it pretty difficult to focus on the issue I’ve decided to address today. Before we get into it, I must again thank the contributions, they keep me both motivated and worried - I’ll explain one day. On to the quote I’d like to base today’s column on: Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth - Sherley Chisholm. As much as I’ve been sympathising with some of the general public’s grumblings directed at the so-called government due to some or other short coming, I cannot express how I at times pity us as a nation. We have become comfortable living in the dark shadow cast by the passive and often pessimistic attitude we have chosen to embrace. I’m not sure where the South African sense of entitlement comes from; I certainly was not at that meeting where we were granted the right to be the whiners we have become. Ask anyone what they think about the state of their community and guaranteed more often than not what you hear will leave you, and the questioned subject, facing the prospect of a ruined day. The opposite to this counterproductive sense of existence, contrary to the complainers

IAL SPEC

reasoning, is not a sheepish attitude of accepting of an obviously unacceptable state of the nation - the opposite is an existence premised on work. Two weeks ago we discussed the issue of personal and community safety not being exclusively delegated to the police, but that each individual should put the shoulder to the wheel and that’s the principal we should activate if we are to be seen as an authentically progressive community. We need to start extracting and applying fundamental principles out of the situations we find ourselves faced with. Talking does help, but please bear in mind there is a difference between progressively speaking about ills and whining. You cannot make a change to any situation by standing on the side-lines, whimpering and complaining. You make a difference by resting the jaw and getting the back muscles behind the grinding stone, and I challenge anyone to point out an instance where any good was achieved through coward-like complaining and illogical pity-seeking statements like ‘oh this country has gone to the dogs’. The only time that the latter will become true will be that unfortunate day when the active, the champions of progress, those who are not afraid of real work, are overwhelmed and fall into the regressive culture of non-activity. Problems present opportunities. Let us know if you have any progressive ideas or examples of how a progressive approach has helped effect change. I challenge you to stop and consider another way before resorting to complaining. Let’s chat, e-mail me at voice@tametimes.co.za or tweet us at @ tametimes.

Is your camera surveillance effective? If you have surveillance cameras installed at home or at your business, or are planning to install cameras, then please consider this request from Col Sambo, Bedfordview SAPS station commander: “Camera footage is extremely helpful to SAPS investigations, especially when it comes to identifying suspects. Please test your equipment regularly. Cameras with low resolution or poor image quality are not very useful. It is well worth considering upgrades from time to time to take advantage of the value added by technology. A

recent robbery was caught on film but unfortunately the footage was too poor to be useful.” Please remember to check all security equipment regularly, including panic buttons, alarms and armed response radio transmitters.

New mobile unit addresses cervical cancer PinkDrive unveiled the design for its new Mobile Women’s Health Unit on 11 October at The Pink Tie Dinner held at Emperors Palace. It has been a long time goal of the organisation to provide a full women’s health service and this unit is the first step in that direction. Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa is fully behind Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), Cause Marketing Fundraisers’ PinkDrive initiative, saying that she commends PinkDrive for committing unwaveringly to providing services in communities in SA. “Their health services are sustainable and patient-friendly. It is good to see how PinkDrive works with governmental health departments and institutions to provide these much needed services to our patients. The Minister of Health has delegated the issues of non-communicable diseases to me and we are prioritising reproductive health issues such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer, as these are the cancers that have the highest lifetime risk rates in South Africa. This unit will help the government to provide services to help detect these cancers in areas that have little access to proper medical healthcare,” Deputy Minister Ramokgopa said. The Unit will now house a gynaecology area for

pap smears and examinations, a reception area for administration and a radiology area that is similar to the Mobile Mammography Unit. The unit is being assembled by MSTSV or Mobile Satellite Technologies Specialised Vehicles, a Cape Town based mobile office construction organisation. The PinkDrive initiative has been running since 2009 with the first Mobile Breast Check Units. In only four short years, have raised the much needed additional funds and sponsorship for the commissioning of the over R5million unit. In closing Kotschan said, “This new addition will be another first in SA as we will now be able to address cervical cancer. It is our dream to add to this truck by including services that address HIV and Aids, diabetes and hypertension, blood pressure, tuberculosis, and general health messaging. With this in mind, we would like to call on other organisations that may be involved in these areas of medicine to join us to create a full women’s health service offering. We are excited to begin this new endeavour and get out into communities.” For more information about PinkDrive visit www. pinkdrive.co.za or e-mail: Noelene@pinkdrive. co.za. Risk factors for Male Breast Cancer It’s important to understand the risk factors for male breast cancer - particularly because men are not routinely screened for the disease and don’t think about the possibility that they’ll get it. As a result, breast cancer tends to be more advanced in men than women when it is first detected. A number of factors can increase a man’s risk of getting breast cancer: • Growing older: This is the biggest factor. Just as is the case for women, risk increases as age increases. The median age of men diagnosed with breast cancer is about 67. This means that half the men who are diagnosed are over 67 and half are under. • High oestrogen levels: - Breast cell growth – both normal and abnormal – is stimulated by the presence of oestrogen levels as a result of: hormonal medicines - Being overweight, which increases the production of oestrogen. - Exposure to oestrogens in the environment - Heavy users of alcohol, limits the liver’s ability to regulate blood oestrogen levels - Having liver disease, which usually leads to lower levels of androgens (male hormones) and higher levels of oestrogen (female hormones). This increases the risk of developing gynaecomastia (breast tissue growth that is non-cancerous) as well as breast cancer. • Kilnefelter syndrome: Men with Klinefelter syndrome have lower levels of androgens and higher levels of oestrogen. Therefore, they

have a higher risk of developing gynecomastia and breast cancer. Klinefelter syndrome is a condition present at birth that affects about 1 in 1 000 men. Normally men have a single X and single Y chromosome. Men with Klinefelter syndrome have syndrome include having longer legs, a higher voice, and a thinner beard than average men, have smaller than normal testicles and are infertile. • A strong family history of breast cancer or genetic alterations: Family history can increase the risk of breast cancer in men – particularly if other men in the family have had breast cancer. • Radiation exposure: Having radiation therapy to the chest before age 30, and particularly during adolescence, may increase the risk of developing breast cancer. This has been seen in young people receiving radiation therapy to treat breast cancer. • Alcohol use: Drinking more than two standard alcoholic drinks per day. A standard alcoholic drink is equal to: - 340ml Beer (average 5% alcohol volume) - 120ml Wine - 25ml Liqueur - 50ml Sherry - 25ml Spirits • Anabolic Steroid use: The use of anabolic steroids include: Infertility, Impotence, Testicular shrinkage, Baldness, Testicular/ prostate cancer and Enlarged breast tissue *Accreditation CANSA fact sheet

Netball player gets sporting colours

Hard work paid off for three St Andrew’s School for Girls matric pupils. They all scored 100% for their matric Geography research projects. Lindsay Thomas’ research project focussed on how access to good education in suburban areas contributes to the influx of learners into suburban schools; while Lorena Tafur’s was titled ‘Development of Morninghill Gardens - a benefit or a burden’. Kate da Silva’s project explored the impact the mining sector has on agriculture in Emalahleni (Witbank).

Holy Rosary matric pupil and netball 2013 captain, Nicole Alves was recently awarded full sporting colours for netball, supplemented by receiving her Eastern Gauteng Indoor Netball colours. She was also acknowledged as the best 1st team netball player. Holy Rosary pupil Nicole Alves

Grade 11 pupil, Cecile Olivier has been awarded the Res Non Verba Community Service Award for her display of exceptional dedication to community service over and above the requirements for the Skilled for Life and Life Orientation programme. Olivier has spent time at various organisations such as the Berea’s Children’s Home and assisting at galas at Ellis Park. Added to this is the fine work she does at the Boikanyo - Dion Herson Foundation. This NGO operates in Soweto and is involved in building vegetable gardens for the underprivileged communities and schools. In addition to supplying the relevant school, the vegetable gardens provide food for child-headed households in adjacent squatter camps. Many hours have been spent digging, sewing torn netting, carrying poles, planting and volunteering for any job that is required of her.

Hosted by Lee-Roy Wright last Thursday night was the screening of one of the most anticipated movies of the year - Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. This movie was released two weeks ago in America, and opened number one on the American box office for two weeks in a row. Bullock’s performance can be compared to Ellen Ripley from the film Alien, where she begins to be meek, afraid and gradually begins to become somewhat of a femme fatale. The cinematography with one shot angles was seriously the best I’ve ever seen. The film was also praised by great directors such as James Cameron who said, “I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.” All in all, you should do yourself a favour and go to your nearest Ster-Kinekor to watch Gravity, and if you do not want to listen to me, you surely can’t refuse James Cameron.

Gloomy-hearted Lions supporters had to endure a gloomy-weathered weekend after the Currie Cup Semi-Final matches. High anticipation followed the fourth placed Lions in their match against log leaders Western Province, with many hopeful for an underdog upset from the traveling team. But, alas, it was not to be for the Jozi pride, as the match ended in favour of the current Currie Cup champions, 33-16. The Lions drew first blood on the scoreboard with a converted penalty by returning flyhalf Elton Jantjes in the opening minutes. On the surface, those three terms seem rather innocuous and random. However when you consider that, according to the Oxford dictionary, cricket is defined as a ‘grasshopper’ like insect, you will understand that these terms are not so random or odd in any way. Cricket, the team game has many idiosyncrasies and nuances and many of them revolve around the terminology of the game. In light of Pakistan’s known trickery and variable deception with the ball, here are a few more terms used in World Cricket for the lesser educated cricket fans. Over the next couple of weeks as the Proteas battle with Pakistan in the UAE, you will hear the television commentators mention the following: The ‘Doosra’ is a ball bowled by a spinner that goes straight on with the arm, instead of turning. The ‘Jaffer’ is an unplayable ball that beats the batsman’s outside edge. The ‘Karan’ ball is a ball that comes out the front of the hand that goes straight on with more bounce, which is also part of the spin bowler’s weaponry. The ‘Flipper’ is basically a ball that goes straight onto the stumps bowled out the front of the hand, also known as a top spinner. One would associate the different balls mentioned with a hot cake recipe. A ‘Googly’ is a supposed leg-spinner, but turns the other way. A ‘Maiden’ is six balls bowled in an over without the scorers being bothered. ‘Dot Ball’s are bowled deliveries where the batting side does not score from. ‘Fine-Legs’ are fielding positions on the field next to the boundary. By Craig Norris

I suppose there is a feminine side to the game as well. All the above included, the Test Series against Pakistan is going to be a tough task, considering the Proteas’ preparation has been none at all. Their last competitive test match played six months ago. However a few of the Proteas have been involved in T20 Cricket, which is not ideal going into a Test Series.
