By Chantal Thurlby The body of 4-year-old Jasmin Pretorius was found under a bed in her father’s home at the turn of the year. She was allegedly raped and murdered by her father’s 23-year-old stepbrother, who lived in the home where the incident occurred.

The SAPS and family held a prayer service for Jasmin in Brakpan on 3 January, to try and help the family deal and try obtain some peace after the horrific ordeal. The accused appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on 7 January for his second court appearance, as his first court appearance was postponed due to him not understanding his rights and not having legal representation.

The alleged rapist and murderer stood, wearing a brown striped jersey and tracksuit pants, staring at the ground showing no emotion and spoke very softly as the magistrate, Khatija Abba, had to re-explain the accused his rights. The accused acknowledged that he now understood his rights and that he would like legal aid. Laughter was heard in the courtroom, but Abba explained that it was the accused’s constitutional right to have legal aid.

Magistrate Abba went on to explain that due to the accused not having any legal representation at the time of going to court that the next court appearance would be on 13 January, to give the accused’s lawyer time to consult with him. The case was postponed

to 13 March.

The alleged rapist is being held in custody at the Brakpan prison.

Little Jasmin Pretorius’ funeral was held last week in Brakpan, 200m up the road from where the accused is being held. Colin Bam, Jasmin’s grand father spoke at the service and said that he couldn’t imagine the ordeal she went through.

Colin has great faith in God and after praying he told the church that God had told him that Jasmin was taken before things became too traumatic.

“It's a watertight case and we are certain that we will make a conviction,” National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mxolisi Nxasana said. More photos on page 2.

Attempted armed robbery failed On 6 January at about 11:30 four armed males walked into the Telkom 8ta shop in the East Rand Mall, Boksburg North. The one suspect enquired about a cell phone, while another one showed one of the personnel a firearm. She started screaming and another female pressed the panic button.

The suspects then fled the scene and ran through the mall. Two members of the community gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects with his firearm. The police then arrested the suspect and confiscated the firearm. The suspect had a 9 mm CZ pistol, and one magazine with ten live rounds.

They drove a hired cream white Quantum bus. The suspect is 32 years old.

Dangerous criminal at large Gauteng police appeal to members of the public to assist with the arrest of Johannes Mabowa.

The suspect, who is believed to be armed with a firearm and to be very dangerous, is sought by the police in connection with a murder and assault grievous bodily harm case that occured in December 2013.

Anyone who might have seen or has information of the whereabouts of the suspect can contact Lieutenant Col Maluleke on 076 473 8865 or Constable De Waal on 082 078 2790. The suspect is considered to be dangerous and community members are advised not to try to apprehend him, rather inform the police immediately.

Kidnapped girl returns home assaulted

A 20-year-old girl who had recently moved to Alberton, Brackendowns from Margate disappeared on 18 December after being seen in Benoni for the last time by her now ex-boyfriend. The girl’s worried grandmother called on Alberton CPF to help her search for her granddaughter.

The girl was found alive on 7 January by Benoni CPF and SAPS. They had contacted the boyfriend to show them the house where he claimed to have last seen her after the girl’s mother managed to contact her. According to Benoni CPF the boyfriend was in Johannesburg CBD when he was asked to assist in the search. After showing the search parties the house, which was located in Western Extension in Benoni, concerns rose as Western Extension is an area predominantly inhabited by foreigners and is a well-known drug hot spot.

The search parties approached the house and the girl was seen standing freely on the front lawn. The Benoni CPF reported that they raided the home, rescued the girl and brought her into protective custody. The victim had been allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend, however the boyfriend claims it was the alleged kidnappers who assaulted her.

According to the victim she was left at the house by her boyfriend and was being held there, but the occupants of the house claimed that she could leave whenever she wanted to.

The search parties say there is too much speculation surrounding the incident and they believe there were drugs involved. They assume the victim and her boyfriend went to the house for drugs, stayed there and ran up a bill which the boyfriend promised to pay upon his return; leaving her behind as collateral, and never returned.

The grandmother said she is concerned about her granddaughter whom she feels got involved in the wrong crowd.

Drugs were found in the Benoni house and, according to Benoni CPF, they will be focussing heavily on the Western Extension this year with the aim of catching more perpetrators.

Shavathon 2014

Zero tolerance for crime

During the festive season an Impala Park CPF community patroller, Mr Willie du Preez, was doing patrols in Frelon Road, Impala Park. Willie drove past community members that appeared to be in distress.

The residents revealed that they had just arrived at their house and saw that they were being burgled and that the thieves were still in their home. They immediately left their driveway and tried to contact SAPS on 10111, but nobody was answering the phones and they established that they didn’t know who else to contact for help.

Willie got their address, which was a few houses away, and immediately called for backup from the other Impala Park CPF community patrollers on the new two-way radio system. The Deputy Chairperson, Mr Simon Kops heard the call and rushed to assist.

Mr Clive Curry, Mr Francois Squire and Mr Brian Miller, also members of the Impala Park CPF community patrollers, sped to the area as well. The thieves fled from the house with as much as they could load on the back of their bakkie. The thieves headed for the N12 highway.

Mrs Denise Curry, the BN CPF Chairperson, radio-contacted Mr Brandon Scott, CPF Chairperson for Benoni, and instructed him to get his patrollers to rush towards the N12 area immediately and wait for further instructions.

On his way towards to the N12 highway,

an off-duty Detective, Constable Mabotja, saw this high-speed chase through traffic towards the highway and joined the chase.

He overtook the patrollers, indicated to them to slow down, fired one shot and hit the back tyre of the suspects vehicle which brought it to an immediate stop. Detective Mabotja took charge of the crime scene, got the thieves to surrender, exit their vehicle and lay face-down on the road.

The CPF patrollers assisted Detective Mabotja and closed the highway to ensure no interference with the crime scene.

Within two minutes, the Benoni CPF Community Patrollers, the Benoni SAPS and Paramedics were on the scene as well.

All stolen goods, to the value of R100 000, were recovered and the thieves were taken away by SAPS to be locked up behind bars.

It soon emerged that this group of thieves are part of a much bigger syndicate. Even though they are from Mamelodi, they are being looked for from as far as Cape Town in connection with housebreakings and other crimes.

On 5 December, the same Impala Park CPF patroller group, with the assistance of the Gauteng K9 Unit based in Benoni, did a drug-bust and seized 30 bags of cocaine to the value of approximately R20 000.

The slogan for this very dedicated CPF patroller group, which is clearly visible on all the CPF boards in the area, is “This Community has a zero tolerance for crime”.

They want all criminals in their area to know the slogan is put into act.

Malherbe, Rigg and Ranwell do their bit for Christmas In December Malherbe, Rigg and Ranwell Inc visited Mercy Haven in celebration of Christmas and to remember the 16 days of Activism against Gender Violence. Mercy Haven is a place of safety for mothers and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Father Christmas, aka Sizwe Sibyia a Candidate Attorney at MRR, arrived unexpectedly on the back of a HarleyDavidson, much to the delight of the mothers and children alike. Father Christmas then played games with the children. The children were led to the common room of the home, which had been decorated with a Christmas tree, ornaments, lights, tinsel and presents.

Inspired by the Santa Shoebox initiative, the children received not only toys but also a brand new outfit, colouring book, crayons, sweets and necessities like a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and a face cloth. All the

mothers also received a gift of “smellies”.

A feast of hot dogs and cold drinks was then enjoyed. “It is only when you see those that have so few that you can begin to understand the meaning of Christmas. It is only when we give that we truly receive.” - Taryn Johnson

Looking after children can be a daunting and rewarding task. It is even harder when the kids are orphaned and in need of support from the whole community.

The Centre Manager of Mall@Carnival, Sandy Turner handed over donations to two local children’s charity organisations in December 2013. Inside the Mall they provided gift wrapping services to customers in exchange for donations, and created a platform for three other organisations: Feed a Child, Reamohetswe Community Centre and Help & Support Children’s Foundation.

St Francis Care Centre receives an oxygen concentrator for Christmas This Christmas St Francis Care Centre, a registered non-profit organisation in Boksburg that provides a haven for the terminally ill, received an Oxygen Concentrator, one of several items on their website wish list to aid oxygen-dependent patients.

Established in 1992, St Francis is a multi-cultural, multidenominational centre offering palliative care that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients, young and old, through all the stages of a life threatening illness.

“We are greatly dependent on the kindness and generosity of others and we are absolutely over the moon that we now have our very own oxygen concentrator on site,” said Tilly Brouwer, centre manager at St Francis Care Centre.

An oxygen concentrator is a portable oxygen machine that uses sieve-bed technology to extract oxygen from the surrounding air, concentrating the oxygen content of normal room air to approximately 90%, at flow rates from five to ten litres per minute, providing a continuous supply of oxygen.

“There are quite a number of patients who require oxygen and we have limited access to oxygen tanks, as the cost is steep. In the past, we have asked families to hire oxygen tanks, however we support the poor, sick and vulnerable, so more often than not these families are unable to afford it and so this gift from Tilda Technologies will bring incredible relief in more ways than one,” concluded Mrs Brouwer.

Unsightly illegal dumping becoming great cause for concern

The extensive illegal dumping taking place in the area around Brentwood Park Road in Atlasville is truly a sore sight to behold.

It is disheartening to think that individuals choosing to dispose of rubbish in this area have no regard for the area or the residents residing around the area and are only concerned about discarding their unwanted waste.

One cannot imagine the health risks and sanitation issues that such illegal dumping poses. It’s not even known what kinds of materials are being disposed of and just how dangerous they are to the environment and the individuals affected by this situation.

People residing in the multiple complexes in the vicinity now have to live with this incredulous issue. It is especially angering to see the sheer volume of garbage dumped in the area when there is a sign present clearly stating that dumping is not permitted there.

An issue in resolving the matter is that the illegal dumping covers a large portion of land.

There are various owners to different portions of the land affected, and only part of this land belongs to the council. The council is only able to immediately prosecute individuals guilty of the offence if it occurs on the land belonging to the council.

Illegal dumping is not only an unpleasant sight, but also a growing threat to the environment and the community. Hopefully shedding light on this issue will create awareness about illegal dumping occurring not only in this area, but on a much larger scale in many other areas.

It may be easier to ignore the magnitude of the growing problem our community is faced with, but if this is ever going to be resolved we need to keep illegal dumping in the public eye and be aware of what is happening. The community needs to stand together and be proactive and persistent in keeping this issue alive. It needs to be thought of what beautiful potential this environment would have if it were not for such injustices.

Brazen dagga peddler arrested in Boksburg - R2000 worth of dagga seized

A routine patrol by EMPD Germiston Task Team in Boksburg North led to an arrest of a male suspect who had been observed for some time operating openly from a sidewalk.

The suspect drew metro police’s attention when he was seen being approached by several persons and an apparent exchange of money and some unknown items took place. The suspect was supplying items stored in a school bag. The arrest took place

Drug dealer arrested During the festive season a Boksburg North complaint vehicle stopped a suspicious looking white Picanto.

Upon searching the vehicle, Constable Loraine Swart and Constable Timothy Mahapa found 51 packets of suspected CAT and illegal substances. They arrested one 23-year-old male foreigner.

Boksburg North business robbers nabbed

at around 14:30 in Sixth Street.

On confronting the suspect, the metro police officers found cash on his person and 101 small packets of dagga in the school bag he was carrying. The 25-year-old male suspect was arrested and his illicit wares and money presumed to be proceeds from selling the dagga were confiscated.

The suspect was charged with possession and dealing in dagga at Boksburg North Police Station. He is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Mayor congratulates class of 2013 The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Clr Mondli Gungubele has congratulated the class of 2013 for an ‘excellent performance’ in Matric.

Speaking after the announcement of the results by the Ministry of Basic Education, Gungubele said it is clear that the country’s level of education is on the right path even though there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“These children have done us proud. They have raised the bar from the previous year and all we can hope for is an even better performance from the class of 2014,” he said. “The sooner our children realise that education is the key to the success of themselves, and therefore this country, the better the future prospects of South Africa.”

A former teacher himself, Gungubele also congratulated teachers for their hard work and dedication in their job.

“Educators have a very challenging job and despite the hardships that they come

across year in and year out, they continue to do a sterling job. Not only do teachers educate these children, they also deal with their social challenges and other personal matters. Despite that they continue to achieve acceptable outcomes. Having said that, one must continue to emphasise the role of parents in the education of their children,” Gungubele added.

“Parents have the right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children. But equally important is that they must actively participate in their day-to-day education of their children so that they can monitor if all is going according to plan.

Parents have the obligation of making each and every home in this country a centre of learning.”

He said with all stakeholders working together with government to improve the level of education in this country, the ultimate objective of a high standard of education for the country shall be realised.

Impala Park CPF communicating with ease On Thursday 19 December the BN CPF Sector 1 was allocated their ICASA CPF Radio Frequency.

On 30 December at around 3:00 two business robbers were arrested. Two males broke through the roof of Zama Zama Tavern, corners of 14th Avenue and All Black Road, Anderbolt.

The alarm went off at AAA Security Company and two of their officials reacted. They saw two suspects on the roof and fired several shots.

climbed through the dark roof of the tavern and immediately started searching inside for the two suspects.

One suspect was found armed with a knife in the bathroom, the other suspect was wounded and found hiding under the pool table. The two suspects were apprehended immediately. The wounded suspect was immediately transported to Tembisa Hospital under guard. The other suspect was taken to Boksburg North Police Station.

On Friday 20 December, Impala Park’s repeater two-way radio system was installed. The installation of this Radio System was a “dream come true” for the 19-member dedicated Impala Park CPF Community Patrollers. During the past few months these Patrollers relied on two-way radios, of which the reception radius was not more than a few hundred meters, and on the WhatsApp cell phone application for their communications.

“You cannot give a screwdriver to a mechanic and expect him to overall a truck engine. I have to do something about it,”

is what Denise Curry, the BN CPF Sector 1 Chairperson said so many times to her deputy, Simon Kops, and husband Clive over the past few months.

“My guys are working very hard to make a difference. It would be a huge loss to our Community to see such dedicated men lose their passion to fight crime because of not having the right tools to do their job.”

Denise Curry and Simon Kops are working hard on fundraising efforts for the CPF, but it is not easy and the much-needed money is not coming in quick enough. Denise purchased the much-needed repeater twoway radio system to help her patrollers.

Matrics of Boksburg reap their rewards

The air was brimming with excitement as the 2013 matrics from Boksburg High School, Sunward Park High School and Hoёrskool Oosterlig waited to collect their matric certificates on 7 January.

Many jubilant faces appeared in the crowd as their matric certificates were handed to them after twelve years of schooling.

Among the top achievers were two Sunward Park High School pupils, Jennifer Rose Eloff, who achieved eight distinctions, and Nikisha Baijan, who achieved ten distinctions. tame TIMES spoke to a few eager individuals to see how they felt Amber Plint they fared in the final results of their school careers.

Victory for Gauteng class of 2013 Gauteng matric results still on the up

Gauteng’s matrics of 2013 achieved the province’s best provincial pass rate since 1994. Compared to last year, the overall pass rate increased from 83.7% in 2012 to 87% in 2013. Currently the Gauteng matrics rank third in the country based on their overall 2013 results.

The MEC of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), Barbara Creecy, announced the province’s matric results for 2013 on Tuesday 7 January. The announcement was made at a provincial ceremony held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in New Town, where all the top achievers were honoured.

Creecy was pleased to announce that for the first time all 15 education districts in Gauteng achieved a matric pass rate of above 82%, and that there were no public schools with less than 40% pass rate.

Many of the top achievers even scored full marks for one or more final matric exam papers.

Praise Ndebele from Ivory Park was honoured for being the top achiever in Gauteng. He attained eight distinctions and got full marks for three of his exams: Business Studies, Accounting and Mathematics. Ndebele is also the first African from a no-fee paying school to become the top achiever in Gauteng.

Ndebele advises future matrics to lead a balanced lifestyle and to plan ahead in order to leave enough time to study and rest. “I had a study timetable, because you can’t study 24/7,” he explains. Wini-Louise Myburgh from Pretoria was also among the three top achievers in Gauteng, as well as the top learner in Mathematics nationally. She attained 9 distinctions and scored full marks for her final Mathematics exam. She attributed her success to her teachers and explained that because of them she knew what to expect in the finals. “My teachers played a big role.

After the prelims we worked out previous exam papers and we started preparation for matric in grade 11 already. They know what it takes,” she says with a grateful smile.

All the top achievers who were honoured at the ceremony received automatic bursaries for tertiary education. Ndebele is still undecided, but he aims to complete a financial or mathematics-related degree, and Myburgh has enrolled for Accounting at the University of Pretoria.

Creecy emphasised that the quality of education offered at public schools should not be undermined, as both Ndebele and Myburgh represent public schools. She said that the prevailing myth that private schools generally do better than public

Photo: timeslive.com Boksburg’s Bernard Parker hit the back of the net twice and his Polokwane-born Bafana teammate Hlompho Kekana scored once to give South Africa the start they needed as the host nation of the African Nations Championship (CHAN). The group-A game, which also marked the opening of the tournament, took place in Cape Town on Saturday 11 January and saw Bafana beat their SADEC neighbours 3 – 1.

Bafana conceded a goal in the eleventh minute as South Africa’s number

one goal minder, Itumeleng Khune, failed to stop Mozambique’s Diago Alberto’s shot at goal. For the major part of the first half South Africa was firmly behind the driver’s seat and they were eventually rewarded for their thrusts towards Mozambique’s goal. Parker converted from a penalty spot, after Sibusiso Vilakazi was hacked down in the box. Vilakazi was in action again minutes before the end of the first half. He curled in a beautiful cross into the box, which was received by Katlego Mashego but denied by the upright.

Bafana’s hold on the opening game continued in the second half as numerous attempts were unconverted.

The second goal came as a result of a cracker from the left boot of Hlompho Kekana. Parker sealed the deal for the South African side in the 83rd minute as he scored Bafana’s last goal, ensuring they top group-A. In another group-A fixture, Mali beat Nigeria 2 – 1.

Schumi still in a

critical condition

By Patrick Monyobo Former F1 driver Michael Schumacher is still in a critical but stable condition after sustaining a head injury while skiing with his son in the French Alps.

Reports are indicating that he is showing improvement after two operations. The 45-year-old has been in hospital since 29 December fighting, for his life while in an induced coma. Schumacer’s wife has asked the media and fans to give the family and medical staff time to deal with the tragedy that has befallen the family.

With school resuming tomorrow, apart from the academic stress there is also the hectic sports schedule.

What I would like to know is how did some scholars keep fit for their different sporting codes during the holidays? Was it a matter of just relaxing and hoping to catch up when school resumes, or did some of you follow your normal training routines? With athletics being the first sport on the school sports calendar, are some of the best athletes ready to give it their best?

Were parents still motivating during holidays? After all, they are the ones who will drive their children to practice while overseeing that they have all that is needed to perform at their best.

Are teachers playing that role of ensuring that children, apart from their academics, especially those with the potential to become professionals athletes, have special programs put in place to ensure that school work is not affected by sports while their sport skills are duly developed? Some children are good at both while others have to balance it out. Both are important to some children, especially those who feel they need both in order to be successful in life.

Look at some of the best athletes around the world and they would confirm during interviews that they never stop training, they believe with that extra training it pushes them to be ahead of their competitors. Are some of you using the same method or thinking, did you put in that extra work to ensure that you ahead of schedule?

If you did all of the above, you are one of those athletes that shouldn’t give up your dream in whatever sport you choose. That is the right mentality we need for those dedicated sports people who will set good examples. Sports will always be a good tool to ensure a healthy mind and body.

My advice to those who a have passion for sport is never to let your guard down and keep working hard. Some of the most famous names in sport started from humble beginnings, talent alone is not good enough and hard work and dedication takes you that extra mile. To be the best you have to beat the best, and that only happens when you work harder than those you compete with.
