Sunday morning was wet and cold with many people opting to stay in bed, however that was not the case for the participants of the Jozi South Half Marathon, hosted by Brotherhood Athletics Club, Gold Reef City and tame TIMES. They were all up at the crack of dawn, prepared for what the weather had in store for them with a smile on their face. The Kalmer sisters made their mark, running the Jozi South Half Marathon for the first time and both winning. Older sister Rene won the 21km and Christine the 10km race, both in the senior ladies category. Rene Kalmer told tame TIMES that she really enjoyed running the streets of Soweto, as it brought back sweet memories of when she won the Soweto Marathon. “It is really a pity about the weather.
Luckily while running it cools you down, it was really a nice race.� She applauded all the volunteers, marshals and everyone who assisted in the rain. Lucky Mohale won the 21km in the senior men category with a time of 1h6m3s. David Manja came in second and Sibusiso Nzima third. In the 10km race Derocious Makhobolo took first place, Precious Mashele second and Samuel Matabutha third. Geshashia Gamanda took second place in the 21km senior ladies category, with Lebo Phalula coming in third. Both Phalula sisters had a victory as Lebogang also took third place in the 10km senior ladies. Tiny Mpho Mabuza took second place. Many people chose the fun 4km run in Gold Reef City Theme Park as all the entry fees

Hannelie Briel of CANSA said the donation will go toward research, education and support for all people affected by cancer. Due to the Jozi South Half Marathon supporting this worthy cause, there were several Peace Starts ambassadors who took part in the race. This became a challenge on its own with Olympic rowing medallist Lawrence Ndlovu, from Team Seize, challenging Cito, frontman of Wonderboom, from Team Showbiz. Equi-therapy changes little Justin’s life Laurelle Williams

Little Justin (11) has cerebral palsy. Even though at birth the doctor said he had a 25% chance of survival, he is living proof of a fighting spirit and thanks to Equi-therapy his confidence and strength is both growing. His goal is to walk by the end of the year and by the grace of God, as well as him not accepting failure, little Justin will walk. Justin was born on 9 July 2002 with a heart defect. He was diagnosed with interruption of the aortic arch with a relatively hypo plastic aorta and ventricular septal defect. He underwent an operation to repair the interruption with the closure of the VSD, which went well but shortly afterwards his lungs collapsed. Unfortunately Justin was unable to suck due to his muscles being too weak and therefore he could not be breastfed. He required physiotherapy, which assisted with this, and was eventually able to breastfeed. After all of this, Justin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It was recommended that little Justin start Equi-therapy. This is a specialised therapy that is made up of various activities and exercises, which the patient does while sitting on a horse. The horse’s natural movements stimulates not only the brain-vestibular system but improves patients’ muscle tone, eye and hand co-ordination, posture, balance, cardiovascular function, and increased physical fitness and joint mobility. When Justin first started Equi-therapy he could not sit on the horse by himself. However, after three years he is now able to do this without the assistance of his teacher Natasha Du Plessis and mother Isabel. His legs have become so strong that he can stand. Give it some more time and add Justin’s perseverance, and soon Justin will be walking.

Informal settlements want to take care of their animals
At the Krugersdorp branch there was a gentleman with nine dogs that came to the SPCA to have them dipped. Four belonged to him and the rest from his neighbours. He ensures all the dogs in his area are vaccinated, dipped and sterilised. “I want to make sure the animals in the township are looked after,” he said. He walks with these dogs all the way to the SPCA and they follow him, listen to him and permanently have wagging tails.
The JSCPA International Animal Week went very well with over 50 animals sterilised during the week, this included vaccinating these animals against rabies and other diseases. They were also dipped to help prevent ticks and fleas. “The community pulled together and really acted in the interest of their animals. We were inundated with questions about ticks and fleas as well as how to feed the animals correctly,” Jolene Beyleveld, JSPCA public relations manager said. According to Beyleveld, the story of Johannes, JSPCA’s kennel hand, and the Great Dane mix really stood out. “While walking around the Krugersdorp kennels I noticed a very large Great Dane mix being very stubborn while Johannes was trying to lead it to the kennels area. This stray dog refused to move, and was very nervous, snapping at him and chewing the lead. Johannes saw that this was not working, and simply sat next to the dog. Every minute or so, Johannes moved his hand a little closer to the dog, avoiding eye contact, ensuring that the dog didn’t feel challenged. After a while Johannes was patting and rubbing the dog. He had gained the dog’s trust. To build this trust, Johannes went and opened a tin of dog food, and the now very happy ANIMAL LOVE: Orange Farm community members waiting for the dog went prancing next to Johannes into the kennel. Of course the dog JSPCA during International Animal Week. was rewarded with the tin of dog food,” Beyleveld said.

Problems present opportunities, work is action By Nieto Hernandez After a week away I hope we haven’t grown too estranged. Quite a lot has happened since then, so believe me I’m finding it pretty difficult to focus on the issue I’ve decided to address today. Before we get into it, I must again thank the contributions, they keep me both motivated and worried - I’ll explain one day. On to the quote I’d like to base today’s column on: Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth - Sherley Chisholm. As much as I’ve been sympathising with some of the general public’s grumblings directed at the so-called government due to some or other shortcoming, I cannot express how I at times pity us as a nation. We have become comfortable living in the dark shadow cast by the passive and often pessimistic attitude we have chosen to embrace. I’m not sure where the South African sense of entitlement comes from; I certainly was not at that meeting where we were granted the right to be the whiners we have become. Ask anyone what they think about the state of their community and guaranteed more often than not what you hear will leave you, and the questioned subject, facing the prospect of a ruined day. The opposite to this counterproductive sense of existence, contrary to the complainer’s reasoning, is not a sheepish attitude of accepting an obviously unacceptable state of the nation - the opposite is an existence premised on work. Two weeks ago we discussed the issue of personal and community safety not being exclusively delegated to the police, but that each individual should put the shoulder to the wheel and that’s the principal we should activate if we are to be seen as an authentically progressive community. We need to start extracting and applying fundamental principles out of the situations we find ourselves faced with. Talking does help, but please bear in mind there is a difference between progressively speaking about ills and whining. You cannot make a change to any situation by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make a difference by resting the jaw and getting the back muscles behind the grinding stone, and I challenge anyone to point out an instance where any good was achieved through coward-like complaining and illogical pity-seeking statements like ‘oh this country has gone to the dogs’. The only time that the latter will become true will be that unfortunate day when the active, the champions of progress, those who are not afraid of real work, are overwhelmed and fall into the regressive culture of non-activity. Problems present opportunities. Let us know if you have any progressive ideas or examples of how a progressive approach has helped effect change. Netcare marks World Trauma Day 2013 Seventeen teams made up of emergency services personnel representing various organisations, gathered on the rooftop parking of The Glen Shopping Mall for the inaugural Firefighter Rescue Challenge. The launch of this event was set to coincide with World Trauma Day (17 October) and presented sponsors SA Emergency Care, Scott Safety, The Glen and Centrum an opportunity to partner with the Netcare group in honouring emergency personnel through some healthy competition. Resa van der Merwe, general manager of Netcare Union Hospital said emergency medical services (EMS) personnel are among the individuals who play a vital role in saving lives in the most traumatic of circumstances. “From trauma resulting from major disasters to accidents.
It is fitting that we should pay tribute to their courage, dedication, commitment and professionalism in the service of others,” van der Merwe added. A replica of the international firefighter challenge course (all except a five story tower) was set up at The Glen, where teams competed through the course infamously known as the toughest two minutes in sports. Teams were pitted against each other in a time trial format enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. The games tested the physical and mental strength of all participants, while achieving the goal of bonding a brotherhood while displaying to the public the level of skill, intensity and pressure emergency service personnel operate under. The individual challenge winner was Grant Strydom and the winning was Johannesburg EMS. HERO IN PRACTISE: A firefighter displays accuracy with his hose.

Still searching for a friend like Kirsty “I try and search in other people for that quality that she (Kirsty) had but it is just not there.” These are the words of Bronwyn Grammer (16) when tame TIMES asked her how she is handling the loss of her best friend Kirsty Theologo. Theologo passed away in 2011 after her and Grammer were doused with petrol and set alight on a hill in Linmeyer by Lester Moody, Jeremy King, Lindon Wagner, Courtney Daniels, Robin Harwood and Harvey Isha. Moody and King pleaded guilty and are serving their sentence, however the other four who pleaded not guilty are still undergoing trial. Two weeks ago the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, heard Wagner describe how he strangled Grammer, hit Theologo with a rock, doused both of them with petrol and set them alight. Theologo’s mother, Sylvia, was present when the testimony was made and she broke down in tears. Her sobbing eventually brought the court to an adjournment. When tame TIMES spoke to Sylvia later that evening she said she hadn’t stop crying since. Grammer was consoled outside the court by Liesha Du Toit, Theologo’s cousin who is also acting as the family spokesperson. “It has taken a toll, we are heartbroken and sad,” Liesha told tame TIMES when asked how it felt hearing Wagner’s testimony. “He admitted his guilt from day one but to actually hear it is another thing.” Du Toit said they want all four to get the maximum sentence. Grammer’s beautiful eyes welled up with tears when asked about her best friend Kirsty. “We did everything together. It was hard enough to have to lose my best friend but to have to hear everything in detail... it is heart sore. It is unbelievable to think that someone actually wanted to kill me,” Grammer said. The Theologo trail continued last Thursday in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, against Harvey Isha, Robin Harwood, Courtney Daniels and Lindon Wagner. The four face charges of the murder of Kirsty Theologo, attempted murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Wagner (23) is still in the dock under cross-examination. According to Wagner, that Friday morning (21 October 2011), on a bus on his way to work, a friend from school showed him a newspaper article about someone having burnt a person to death. He said he didn’t read the article and only saw the headline. It was this headline that led him to decide later that evening that the soul selling ritual would take place that night. The court also heard Wagner testify that he was going to leave out the part of Daniels (18), the only female of the four accused, giving him the lighter to set Theologo and Grammer alight, in order to protect her as she is a young girl. “We have been here (prison) for two years so we know how it is,” Wagner said. However he decided against this and told the court that it was Daniels. Daniel’s lawyer then put it to Wagner that if he was willing to cover for Daniels, who isn’t his friend (Wagner testified that he is not friends with her at present), how much has he covered for his real friends Harwood and Isha? According to Wagner, Daniels and her friends didn’t like Theologo. He said he knew this as Theologo told him and he saw it in the way they treated Theologo. He said Theologo was always with the boys, so he thinks this is why Daniels didn’t like her. Wagner said that all that Theologo wanted was love and this is why he didn’t want her to be the fifth person in the soul selling ritual. “She wanted something in life and by selling her soul she wouldn’t have got this.” According to Wagner once you sell your soul you become cold and are unable to love. He explained that he didn’t think Daniels had supernatural powers, but according to him she knew about the dark world as he heard that she was casting spells on people. For this reason he felt she could be the fifth person for the soul selling ritual. The state prosecutor’s cross-examination became a back and forth session of her pointing out Wagner’s conflicting statements during his testimony. Wagner admitted to not telling the truth when the first question was put to him on Friday morning. The trail continues.

Last week I gave it a go and phoned Sihle, the woman who is the contact person for the pensioner rebates. It just rang. I tried Baxolile, who answered the phone. She listened to my story and put me through to someone else who could help me. A sweet voice came on the line, listened to my story, asked for my rates account number, confirmed my name and said: “wait a moment.” Three minutes later she came back and said she had my application right in front of her, looked at it, found it in order and said she would process it right away. It
took my breath away, but I didn’t worry as my doctor says I got a strong heart. I said I thought she was an angel and asked for her contact number in case of queries. De Freitas said that the 2014 elections will be a historic one as the DA will take Gauteng over as its government. “For this we need each person to commit only four hours on the voter registration weekend on 9 and 10 November 2013 and four hours on Election Day in April or May 2014. Desperately frustrated resident: I noted with interest the recent article about Pensioner Rebate Forms. I feel the utmost sympathy with anyone trying to liaise with either Jorissen Street or Eureka House, as I have been trying to obtain a rates credit since 2010 with no success. I have liaised on numerous occasions with both of these departments, sent documentation to Metro watch, liaised with my local counsellors and attended the meeting at Marks Park, made countless phone calls, faxes etc, only to find out that I was going round in circles. Eventually last October I had a meeting with the public speaker at the Civic Centre, who referred me to Farida Taaka, who they assured me was the senior person to liaise with. I liaised with Farida who referred me to Sizwe. After a long and hard battle with Sizwe, including such occurrences as finding out that my subsidy had actually been cancelled because I had registered early, eventually we managed to agree on the relevant credit. I thought that I had managed to resolve this only to be advised by Sizwe that there was no one available to pass a credit and he didn’t know how to get the interest reversed. My subsequent e-mails to Farida were ignored,
which seems to be the normal modus operandi by this department. I sent an e-mail to the Mayor and received a response from Jimmy Mosefowa and Bongiwe Middleton from the Private Office of the Executive Mayor, who forwarded my e-mail to Annie Conradie, Magriet Rautenbach and Christene Maubane, requesting them to contact me in order to assist. Regardless of the fact that this request was sent to them from the Mayor’s Office, not one of them have contacted me. I advised Jimmy Mosefowa of this but received no response. It appears that these persons have no respect for the Mayor and it seems that he has no control over them, as the request to them from his office was ignored and even when advised of this he didn’t bother to take any action. Is this really the insulting type of service that the public is expected to pay taxes to support? Even our counsellors cannot get any response from them. Regardless of the multitude of complaints from the public it seems that no positive action is ever taken to put any systems in place to resolve these problems and it appears that the staff simply do not care. This inadequate service is unconstitutional as it amounts to maladministration and it is an abuse of public rights to take a salary for such shocking service. My documents have now been sent to the Public Protector, hopefully for some positive action.

Election I regularly meet people who feel as though others simply ‘put up with them’. They feel even worse when they think of what God must think of them. It is a very sad case of low self-esteem. The Bible reveals a stunning truth about God’s dealings with people, saying in Ephesians 1:4: “...He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” God is not ‘putting up’ with those who follow Jesus. The reason someone comes to follow Jesus is because God chose him or her first. It’s a secret for the believer. You may say, “Father God, I am so glad I chose you”, to which He will reply, “I am happy that you are too, but you should know I actually chose you first.” To which we may ask why? Why did God choose us? We are not people who can claim to be anything spectacular by God’s standards. The answer is because He just wanted to and for no other reason. Not because of our potential to fail or not to fail, just because He wanted to. God is far from just putting up with His people.

Mighty women The inaugral Mighty Women Conference will take place from 15 to 17 November. The speakers will be Hettie Brittz, Antoinet Viviers and Erika Richards. The JOY Dogs, Jazmine, Oscar and Yola, took part in Pets Day at Goldfields in Bedfordview recently, which included a mass blessing for all the pets as it was St Francis Day. Despite the heat it was a wonderful day and the JOY Dogs were a hit as usual. Various charities were there as it was a fundraising day and a follow-up on the Doggy Picnic and Safari Parade. Pet lover and 5fm radio personality Leigh-Ann Mol was the MC. The day had the dogs as judges for the doggy cake competition. “Jazmine ate all the samples with gusto, whereas some of the other dogs were picky, notably Buddy (from Toyota fame),” Sue Green, Glenvista resident and owner of the JOY dogs said. PinkDrive unveiled the design for its new Mobile Women’s Health Unit on 11 October at The Pink Tie Dinner held at Emperors Palace. It has been a long time goal of the organisation to provide a full women’s health service and this unit is the first step in that direction. Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa is fully behind Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), Cause Marketing Fundraisers’ PinkDrive initiative, saying that she commends PinkDrive for committing unwaveringly to providing services in communities in SA. “Their health services are sustainable and patient-friendly. It is good to see how PinkDrive works with governmental health departments and institutions to provide these much needed services to our patients. The Minister of Health has delegated the issues of non-communicable diseases to me and we are prioritising reproductive health issues such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer, as these are the cancers that have the highest lifetime risk rates in South
Africa. This unit will help the government to provide services to help detect these cancers in areas that have little access to proper medical healthcare,” Deputy Minister Ramokgopa said. The Unit will now house a gynaecology area for pap smears and examinations, a reception area for administration and a radiology area that is similar to the Mobile Mammography Unit. The unit is being assembled by MSTSV or Mobile Satellite Technologies Specialised Vehicles, a Cape Town based mobile office construction organisation. The PinkDrive initiative has been running since 2009 with the first Mobile Breast Check Units. In only four short years, have raised the much needed additional funds and sponsorship for the commissioning of the over R5million unit. In closing Kotschan said, “This new addition will be another first in SA as we will now be able to address cervical cancer. It is our dream to add to this truck by including services that address HIV and Aids, diabetes and hypertension, blood pressure, tuberculosis, and general health messaging. With this in mind, we would like to call on other organisations that may be involved in these areas of medicine to join us to create a full women’s health service offering. Lost in space with Ster-Kinekor

miguel@tametimes.co.za Attending the Ster-Kinekor’s latest and greatest Movie Buffs evening was an offer I could not refuse. Hosted by Lee-Roy Wright last Thursday night was the screening of one of the most anticipated movies of the year - Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. This movie was released two weeks ago in America, and opened number one on the American box office for two weeks in a row. You can imagine the excitement of the inner sci-fi geek as the lights went out and the movie began. Right from the start you are thrown in space with a crew that consists of Dr Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first mission, and George Clooney as the veteran commander on his last mission. Things go wrong when a Russian station blows up and the debris manages to destroy all contact and transportation to earth. Everybody probably imagined what it must

be like to be lost in space, but Director Alfonso Cuarón manages to let the audience experience this first hand. What I experienced was claustrophobia, partially due to the greatest acting Sandra Bullock has ever done. There was a point where she couldn’t breathe and I felt like my own chest was tightening. Clooney and Bullock manage to put you in an emotional spin. Bullock’s performance can be compared to Ellen Ripley from the film Alien, where she begins to be meek, afraid and gradually begins to become somewhat of a femme fatale. The cinematography with one shot angles was seriously the best I’ve ever seen. The film was also praised by great directors such as James Cameron who said, “I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.” All in all, you should do yourself a favour and go to your nearest Ster-Kinekor to watch Gravity, and if you do not want to listen to me, you surely can’t refuse James Cameron.

Star-studded Western Province and on song crowd proved too strong for Golden Lions.
Gloomy-hearted Lions supporters had to endure a gloomyweathered weekend after the Currie Cup Semi-Final matches. High anticipation followed the fourth placed Lions in their match against log leaders Western Province, with many hopeful for an underdog upset from the traveling team. But, alas, it was not to be for the Jozi pride, as the match ended in favour of the current Currie Cup champions, 33-16. The Lions drew first blood on the scoreboard with a converted penalty by returning flyhalf Elton Jantjes in the opening minutes. The hosts for the afternoon were not phased though and launched the first of many attacks at the visiting team. WP bashed across the try line, only to be caught out for a forward pass by the TMO. Instead, scores were drawn by converting a penalty of their own. Mere minutes later Catrakilis scored and converted a lightning try to put Province in the lead. Gio Aplon further extended that lead with a defence-shattering run that put him over the try line. A single penalty from Province and two more from the Lions ended the first half at 18 points to 9 in favour of the home side. The Lions had to defend most of the second half, as Province pushed the attack hard into Lions territory. The visitors were able to hold the defensive line, forcing Province to be content with three penalties. A beacon of hope was given the Lions with eight minutes of play left, when Province hooker Scarra Ntumbeni was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle. Lions eighth man, Warren Whiteley crossed the line for the pride’s first try of the match. Unfortunately the score was too little too late, and two more converted penalties by WP put victory well beyond the Lions’ reach. It was a gloomy end to a bright season for the Lions, as they were outmatched by a Province team at their peak. However, the recentlyembattled Lions team can be proud of what they’ve achieved, despite being excluded from this year’s Super Rugby tournament.
